Allegiant Air last week announced a further expansion of its destinations from Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

The Las Vegas-based air carrier will serve 29 destinations from SRQ when the new flights to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, begin in the fall. The new routes are part of a 22-route nationwide expansion announced this week, set to capitalize on holiday travel.

The flights to Iowa kick off Nov. 19. The Tulsa flights begin Dec. 15.

In Punta Gorda, new flights to Austin, Texas, and Bentonville, Arkansas, launch in mid-November.

“A hallmark of Allegiant’s service is to connect travelers to warmer destinations where they can enjoy a variety of outdoor leisure activities,” Allegiant Senior Vice President Drew Wells said.

The airport set a monthly mark in July with more than 326,000 arrivals and departures.

ne week into the school year, COVID-19 has created a series of operational challenges for Sarasota County Schools, with hundreds of students and dozens of staff members absent from facilities because of positive tests and contact tracing.

During a school board workshop Tuesday, a representative for Sarasota Memorial Hospital said the effects of the pandemic are currently as bad as they’ve ever been. School district employees expressed concern about the ability to provide adequate transportation, dining and custodial service because of absences associated with COVID-19.

“We can’t afford to lose any more of our employees because we’ll just not be able to run the school system,” Superintendent Brennan Asplen said.

As a result, the school board will have an emergency meeting at 3 p.m. Friday to consider the adoption of a mandatory mask policy in schools. Before the school year, the board adopted an optional mask policy. Multiple board members expressed an interest in settling a continuing debate over masks amid a rise in COVID-19 cases.

“We aren’t doing everything we can, and I think we need to take actions to do more,” school board member Shirley Brown said.

According to the school district’s COVID-19 dashboard, there were 204 students and 50 staff members who tested positive and were isolating on Tuesday. An additional 226 students and 59 staff members were quarantined because of contact tracing.

Manuel Gordillo, an infectious disease specialist at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, told the school board he recommended adoption of a mask mandate without an opt-out provision like the one included in new regulations in Manatee County.

mandate could be relaxed if case numbers and positivity rates fall.

For now, however, he characterized the situation surrounding COVID-19 as a crisis.

“We are at the worst of the pandemic in Florida,” Gordillo said.

“We’re at the worst of the pandemic in Sarasota, and we need your help.”

Administrative school district staff recounted the challenges that emerged during the first week of classes. Brandon Johnson, the executive director of elementary schools, said one school had a full administrative team absent on its first day. Another with 30 staff members had 13 teachers out. Asplen said one school had 35 adult employees absent yesterday and that assistant principals have been focused almost exclusively on contact tracing, unable to talk to teachers about instruction.

“I’m concerned about our students’ education because of all of this,” Asplen said.

Jody Dumas, the district’s chief operations officer, said transportation, custodial and food services staff were nearing a breaking point. Although the district sought to find contingencies for absences, two schools had to shift to grab-and-go food service.

Dumas said additional absences among bus drivers could require the district to shift to a “double run” system, where a single driver would have to service multiple routes, with the second route facing significant delays in arriving at homes or at school.

Dumas praised school operations staffers, but he said it was difficult to develop a plan for an adequate level of service if more workers become unavailable.

“I’m in a position where I don’t have a lot of answers,” he said.

Board member Bridget Ziegler expressed concern about the prospect of a mask mandate as the district’s response to COVID-19 issues, both because she questioned the legality of pursuing a measure Gov. Ron DeSantis has attempted to restrict and because she said she feared the issues associated with the spread of the coronavirus would not go away just because of masking.

Board member Karen Rose also expressed opposition to a policy that violated state regulations.

“Breaking the law is not an option for me,” Rose said.

School districts in Broward and Alachua counties have adopted mandates in defiance of the governor’s orders. On Tuesday, the Florida Board of Education voted to consider sanctions against both counties.

Ziegler asked what conditions would lead to the school district no longer being able to provide essential services and what contingencies were in place in case of such a situation. District officials said that depended on the department and the school; it’s more difficult to find a replacement for a credentialed bus driver than it is for other staff positions, for example. Asplen said he’s been exploring the same questions and was struggling to arrive at a definitive answer.

“At what point do you call it a day?” Asplen said. “I’m not sure.”

Board member Jane Goodwin expressed her support for a mask mandate at Tuesday’s workshop, stating the conditions in Sarasota schools demanded such a measure. Board member Tom Edwards said he supported a 30-day mandate, allowing school officials to evaluate the numbers and assess a new direction after a month of mask-wearing.

Edwards also said he wanted the district to definitively settle its mask policy one way or another, expressing an interest in bringing some closure to a contentious topic. The school board meeting that followed Tuesday’s workshop featured nearly two hours of public input from speakers on both sides of the mask debate.

The hospital continues to post record patient counts, outpacing the previous peaks of the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. On Tuesday, there were 239 patients with COVID-19 at SMH, including 52 in intensive care.

Gordillo and other hospital officials continued to stress vaccination status as the leading determining factor in the outcome of individuals with COVID-19. As of Monday, among total hospitalized COVID-19 patients, 89% were unvaccinated.

For ICU patients, 94% were unvaccinated, and 97% of patients on ventilators were not vaccinated.

For the week ending Aug. 12, Sarasota County reported 2,377 new cases at a positivity rate of 16.5%, according to state data.

Another 3,863 individuals got vaccinated, putting the county at 72% of its eligible population with at least one dose of a vaccine.

“I can’t put my head in the sand as to what’s going on in our school system on a daily basis,” he said.

The City Commission is moving to adjust the information it provides to property owners seeking a historic designation.

This month, as property owners sought a local historic designation for two 1920s Burns Court bungalows that are already recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, two city commissioners were focused on the downside of historic designation.

Although the commission ultimately voted 5-0 to approve the local designation, commissioners Erik Arroyo and Hagen Brody expressed discomfort with the city’s historic preservation policies. Both elected officials said they feared the city wasn’t doing enough to ensure property owners were aware of the consequences of a historic designation.

“I understand that there are a lot of benefits to historic preservation, but there are some challenges that come with it, as well,” Arroyo said.

That’s why, in a 3-2 vote on Aug. 3, the City Commission also moved to revise the information included in the packet for local historic designation applications.

The commission directed City Manager Marlon Brown to draft a list of pros and cons for applicants seeking to have a property receive historic designation. The

applicant would have to provide a notarized affidavit to the city affirming they received the data.

Brody said he thought the step was important because he did not feel that some applicants had a full sense of the ramifications of a historic designation.

Brody said the designation also places constraints on a property owner, including limiting the maximum building envelope on a site.

“I just want them to be better informed and fully informed,” Brody said.

Commissioners Liz Alpert and Jen Ahearn-Koch expressed opposition to the proposed changes, questioning the necessity.

“I don’t know why we’re assuming that somebody applying for historic preservation designation doesn’t have as much sense as anybody else who’s applying for anything else,” Alpert said.

“Why would we think that they don’t know what they’re doing?”

City advances St. Armands hotel discussion Commissioners spoke positively about a plan to build a hotel and grocery store on the site of a parking lot.

In a 4-1 vote Monday, the City Commission said it was open to hearing proposals for the sale and development of the Fillmore Drive parking lot on St. Armands Circle, a move intended to allow further consideration of plans for a hotel on the city-owned property.

The commission’s vote was a response to a conceptual development proposal the city received earlier this year. In May, developers John Meshad, Gavin Meshad and Dennis McGillicuddy appeared at a commission meeting to detail their vision for transforming the 1.98-acre site. The group proposed a 98-room hotel, 15,000-square-foot Morton’s grocery store, six town homes and 270 covered public parking spaces to maintain the capacity of the existing lot.

At Monday’s meeting, City Attorney Robert Fournier went over the commission’s legal obligations when it came to considering a private development proposal of the city-owned lot.

Fournier said the city was not obligated to open a competitive bid process before selling the land, though the commission could do

that if it wanted to actively solicit more proposals. But a majority of the commission spoke positively about the hotel plan, expressing an interest in considering a sale of the parking lot to facilitate the project as presented.

“I think it’s a good proposal,” Commissioner Liz Alpert said.

“I think it would be a benefit to St. Armands, I think it would be a benefit to the public, and I’m in favor of moving forward.”

During his presentation to the commission, Fournier also detailed the hurdles a builder would have to overcome to construct a project in line with the one submitted. The developer would need to get the city to approve a series of revisions to existing regulations in St. Armands Circle, rewriting the zoning code and comprehensive plan to allow for hotels, residences and buildings up to 45 feet tall, 10 feet taller than the current maximum in the area.

The St. Armands Business Improvement District, a self-taxing group of property owners that includes Gavin Meshad as a board member, is already in the process of pursuing those changes for the commercial tourist zoning district on St. Armands. Although the parking lot property is zoned for governmental use, Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch suggested the city should hold off on considering redevelopment of the Fillmore site until officials have a chance to evaluate the broader regulatory revisions the BID is submitting.

will go to the Planning Board and City Commission for public hearings in early 2022. Ahearn-Koch said allowing that application to go through the city’s review process would help illuminate the public’s feelings about hotel development and taller buildings on St. Armands, which could inform the commission’s decision on the Fillmore lot.

“Let’s test the waters, and then we can engage — or not,” AhearnKoch said.

Members of the public who spoke at Monday’s commission meeting also encouraged officials to take their time in considering the prospect of redeveloping the parking lot. Kevin Hennessy is an attorney representing Ocean Properties, a company whose

portfolio includes four barrier island hotels, including the Lido Beach Resort, Sandcastle Resort at Lido Beach and Holiday Inn Sarasota-Lido Beach.

Hennessy asserted the city was taking a backwards approach to the potential sale of the Fillmore property, arguing officials should be engaging with the public to determine the best path forward for the site and surrounding area.

“What has the city done to create its vision for St. Armands Circle?” Hennessy said.

Mayor Hagen Brody noted that a 2008 master plan the city produced identified a grocery store and boutique hotel as top needs for the Circle based on stakeholder surveys. Brody said he believed that remained true today, calling

the grocery store in particular a significant benefit for individuals living on the barrier islands. Brody said he was not interested in going through a competitive bid process because he felt it would take additional time and resources without any guarantee a project would be built in the end.

“I’m in favor of getting things done,” Brody said.

Fournier advised against the city jointly negotiating the details of a contract with an interested purchaser, indicating that it could create a perception of bias if the commission were asked to review future development proposals for the land. Instead, the city is inviting a prospective developer to submit a contract proposal for consideration.

Although city officials have expressed an interest in beginning a series of First Friday events downtown this year, it’s not yet clear what, exactly, that might entail — though Joe Grano has some ideas.

Grano, the president and founder of marketing company Next-Mark, appeared at the Aug. 3 Downtown Improvement District meeting to discuss plans for an event series in the heart of the city. For months, the DID has discussed creating pedestrianfocused gatherings inspired by events held in places including Lakewood Ranch on the first Friday of each month.

DID board member Chris Voelker reached out to Grano because she was impressed with his work on the Sol of the Circle series on St. Armands Circle. As a result, the DID hosted Grano at its Aug. 3 meeting, voting unanimously to approve a three-month, $14,400 contract for Next-Mark to develop plans for First Fridays.

Grano intends to return to the DID board next month with a detailed proposal based on stakeholder input, but on Aug. 3, he shared two ideas. The first was to hold a “decentralized” event, with downtown split into four quadrants with distinct themes. “​​One might be classical music on Palm,” he said. “One might be country music on the south part of Main Street, one might be rock ‘n’ roll, one might be Caribbean.”

The option, Grano said, would be to host a centralized event built around a closure of Main Street or another downtown street.

Although the DID’s discussion of First Fridays originated with a proposal to close Main Street to vehicular traffic on the weekends, board member Ron Soto said some downtown merchants voiced opposition to a street closure.

“We do not want a street closure,” said Harmoni Krusing Bens, the owner of Lotus Boutique on Main Street. “I can’t (stress) that enough.”

Grano is not the only partner the DID is considering as it prepares to launch First Fridays. The group also heard a presentation from Laura Kresl, whose Pro It Out marketing company has led the DID’s advertising over the past year. Kresl is scheduled to return to the board next month to share a detailed proposal for potentially incorporating First Fridays into the services the company provides for fiscal year 2022.

During the DID’s discussion Aug. 3, speakers identified businesses that close before the evening as a potential hurdle for hosting vibrant nighttime events.

Board member Eileen Hampshire said she thought the events would act as an incentive for businesses to stay open later, which would help the DID’s goal of bringing activity downtown.

“If we do get a really successful First Friday, people — they’re not stupid,” she said. “They’re going to see the wisdom of being open.”

As the city seeks to emulate such events as Lakewood Ranch’s Music on Main concert series, downtown stakeholders are still undecided on key details, such as whether Main Street will be closed.

You need to read this magazine story. An oldschool reporter shines light on a miracle drug and efforts to quash it.

e are connecting you this week to an amazing, extraordinary story of a miracle drug that is “the most powerful COVID-19 killer known to science.”

You may have heard of it: ivermectin.

Dr. Paul Marik, famous in world medical circles, the second-most published critical care doctor in the history of medicine, told a former colleague of mine and friend, journalist Michael Capuzzo, if ivermectin “were universally distributed at a dose that costs 10 American cents in India and about the cost of a Big Mac in the U.S., ivermectin would save countless lives, crush variants, eliminate the need for endless big pharma booster shots and end the pandemic all over the world.”

That sounds like over-thetop, not-to-be-believed hype.

But it’s not.

If you do anything today, or this week, you must read Capuzzo’s story, “The Drug That Cracked COVID,” which was published in the May edition of his and wife Teresa’s Pennsylvania magazine, Mountain Home.

It appears the numbers are few. Doctors repeatedly have told journalist Michael Capuzzo the pressure against its use from the medical establishment and government agencies is unprecedented.

Nonetheless, cardiologist Dr. Bruce Boros, who operates three clinics in the Florida Keys, was among the first Florida physicians to surface as a prescriber of ivermectin.

In an email last week, Capuzzo told us he and his wife attended a three-day strategic planning conference involving the FLCCC founders. Wrote Capuzzo: “The No. 1 jaw-dropper: Ivermectin is crushing all variants in Brazil, South Africa, England, doctors on the ground tell Dr. Kory, and ‘slaying the

Capuzzo’s story is full of examples of doctors all over the world reporting how ivermectin is saving lives and eradicating COVID-19. These doctors also all say how they have run into repeated resistance from the medical establishment, public health agencies and politicians against the use of ivermectin.

And yet, as the stories of this miracle drug spread around the world, the mainstream media continues to ignore the news.

This behavior of the media prompted Capuzzo to call them out in his Mountain Home story.

We’ve known Capuzzo since our days nearly 40 years ago in the newsroom of the Miami Herald. He was an all-star, oldschool reporter, a true believer in tracking down and verifying facts. And he became an expert storyteller, becoming a New York Times Books bestselling author while he and his wife owned their little magazine in the mountains of Pennsylvania.

When we polled the six hospitals in Sarasota and Manatee counties on whether they are allowing doctors to prescribe ivermectin, three hospitals responded before deadline: Neither Blake Hospital in Bradenton nor Doctors Hospital in Sarasota, both owned by HCA Healthcare, is allowing the use of ivermectin.

“Ivermectin is not approved by the FDA for use in treating COVID-19 and has not been shown effective,” wrote Dr. Mitchell Rubinstein, Blake’s chief medical officer. “The FDA.gov website advises against using ivermectin.”

Monica Yadav, Doctors Hospital’s spokesperson, echoed Rubinstein’s reference to the FDA, adding “there is not enough data currently to suggest a patient benefit.”

A spokesperson for Sarasota Memorial Hospital said ivermectin has been used sparingly at SMH. But its use requires physicians to follow the hospital’s protocols for unconventional medicines.

But after that testimony, there was nothing in the media.

That triggered Capuzzo’s curiosity. This was news! A story that needed telling. He spent the next several months piecing together the story of ivermectin and the famous Front Line COVID Critical Care Alliance doctors. He wrote: “I’ve seen unthinkable things” — referring to the behavior of the media.

At the end of an editor’s note introducing his 10,000-word story, Capuzzo issued a call to “my fellow colleagues (journalists) … to open their hearts and minds to legitimate, unreported doctors and therapies and write about all sides of the ivermectin story, like journalists always have. It is a historic opportunity.

A little more balance would be in order We share your concern over property rights. However, in all of your concern over property rights, you seem to have a strange method for prioritizing whose rights should prevail.

Your statement, “Owners should have full use of their property as the law or contract stood at the time they bought it,” does not apply to the proposed hotel projects as none of the proposals under consideration could be completed without changes to codes.

If the Benderson Development group had worked within the existing zoning and ordinances, they likely would have not had the level of community opposition that they got to Siesta Promenade. And now they purchased additional land to obtain approval for further increasing their density. Similarly, the proposed hotels all require significant changes and exemptions by the county.

You mention that there are processes to approve proposals.

And that these processes include public input. You do not seem to understand that a growing number of property owners on Siesta Key have come to the conclusion that they cannot rely on these processes.

There is a belief that the county commissioners and their

staff provide far more time and resources helping developers circumvent zoning and ordinances than taking the time to analyze and confirm what the existing property owner base wants Siesta Key to look like.

SKCoalition and Saving Siesta Key, the group evaluating the incorporation of the Key, as well as Siesta Key Association and the Siesta Key Condo Council, have asked the County Commission to take time out and do a comprehensive study to quantify the desires of the community and at the same time develop a transportation model for Siesta Key and its access roads. Only in this way can one develop a comprehensive approach to evaluate the vehicular and pedestrian traffic of these proposed hotels and other projects.

This is a recommendation for well-planned growth for Siesta Key that must also accommodate mainland Sarasota residents the reasonable access to the benefits on the Key. The Key community is trying to be heard. You have discounted those concerns and grouped them all into statements like: “I got mine. Now let’s shut the door.” A little more balance in your analysis would be in order.

different. The property rights of the proposed hotel builders to which the author refers would come at the cost of taking away the property rights of residents and business owners.

I was mayor of Laurel Hollow, New York, a bucolic waterfront village on Long Island. I and many residents of Siesta Key are proponents of responsible development that protect the property rights of the residents and maintain the character and environment of this “amazing place.”

The developers of the proposed hotels knew very well what the zoning allowed when they bought these properties.

Nobody is denying them the right to build under the current zoning and density. Unfortunately, they want to throw away all the zoning and density regulations and forever change this island for their economic gains.

I am one of the board members of Save Siesta Key. I got involved in the effort to incorporate Siesta Key because I have seen Siesta Key not get the resources it needs. The intent is not to create a nanny state but to provide a voice and the right to self-determination. Siesta Key is the heart of the entire region and an economic engine for the entire county.

Siesta Key is split between two county commissioners, neither of whom lives on Siesta Key or understand its needs. How is this government of the people, by the people, for the people?

Siesta Key has become a much

smaller part of a growing county, yet it remains the crown jewel of the region. The county has not invested anywhere near the resources that it draws from tourism generated by Siesta Key. HARRY ANAND SIESTA KEY

Residents not trying to ‘close the door’ No one in our organization is anti-development. All of us feel that smart redevelopment is important. I am a 35-year career commercial developer and have never opposed development until now.

We are not trying to stop tourism, vacationers or new residents. We are not against the idea of true boutique hotels, if the proposed size, scale and impact is compatible with our barrier island.

In fact, independent boutique hotels are the most profitable and fastest-growing segment of the hospitality industry. Yet neither of these proposed hotels resemble the size, height or programming trends of boutiques.

These developers are simply trying to maximize every inch of height and scale while minimizing setbacks.

We don’t propose to “deny developers their (zoning) rights.”

Commercial General land on Siesta Key does not “by-right” allow transient accommodations except by special exception. Similarly, their zoning only allows a height of 35 feet above the Federal Emergency Management Agency flood elevation (four stories). The two hotels are requesting to go 80 and 83 feet

above the FEMA elevation.

These are also adjacent to existing residential communities. The existing code standards required to grant Special Exceptions have multiple compatibility requirements, which these hotels do not satisfy. The applicant proposing on Aug. 19 is requesting 6.5 times the allowed density and more than twice the allowed height.

These high-rises were part of the reason that prior county leaders established protective regulations to avoid density and intensity. The goal was to preserve what makes Siesta Key attractive and set apart from commercialized areas like Clearwater Beach.

This is not about a bunch of “not in my backyard” residents trying to “close the door.”

Many of our supporters reside on mainland Sarasota. They are concerned that high-density hotels will exacerbate access congestion to the barrier island and public beach overcrowding.

We welcome these commercial landowners to develop what they are allowed to do within existing zoning. However, they are requesting major precedentsetting changes beyond their

commercial zoning and residential zoning for future growth. It’s unique to barrier islands.

If we violate and set aside the Codes, Ordinance, Comprehensive Plan language that has worked well, we all lose Siesta Key. Doors are being closed for all who live and work here. The doors are being closed to Siesta Key by those working against the choice of protection for Siesta Key barrier island.

Every one of the proposals on Siesta Key and Lido Key ask for dramatic revisions to existing zone codes. Why doesn’t Moore say that builders are more than welcome as long as they build according to existing codes?

Builder requests are way overboard and self-serving.

Disorderly conduct: The manager of a pharmacy called police about a disruptive customer.

The manager said the customer comes into the store regularly and starts yelling at staff and other customers about random things. An officer made contact with the customer, who was sitting on a bench in the plaza where the pharmacy is located. The customer said he was upset about not being allowed to bring his bike inside the store. An officer determined no crime occurred.

HE SAID, SHE SAID 1:25 p.m. — 2800 block of Saralake Drive South Dispute: The owner of a residential property said a tenant has been difficult with him and with any contractors he has come to the property. The owner said the tenant refuses to pay rent or even talk to him about the rent. An officer spoke to the tenant, who claimed the opposite was true.

She said the owner is rude and disagreeable, and he refuses to make any improvements or repairs to the property. The tenant said she is moving out by the end of the month.

EARLY CHECK-OUT 11:34 p.m. — 200 block of Benjamin Franklin Drive Noise complaint: An employee at a hotel called the police and requested that an officer escort guests off the property. The guests had been the cause of a series of disturbances at the hotel that evening. An officer made contact with the man renting the room, who was initially uncooperative. He and five other guests eventually packed and agreed to leave the room.

Fear not, Tornadoes fans: football is indeed coming.

As has been the case the last few seasons at Booker, the football team’s roster numbers are lower than most of its competition. In fact, there were some nervous moments among the fan base when Booker did not hold a 2021 spring game, with some speculating that the program would not have enough players to field a team in the fall. Thankfully for Tornadoes fans, those rumors were unfounded. The Tornadoes consistently had between 30 and 35 players at workouts during the summer, Booker Coach Baraka Atkins said, with 10-15 of those being freshmen. Atkins said he hopes those numbers continue to grow.

“We had a great summer of workouts with a core group of guys that came and worked hard,” Atkins said. “I’m proud of them.

Spring didn’t go how we wanted.

We were still trying to work some of the numbers out, but that’s behind us now. We’re moving forward and looking forward to the 2021 season.”

“That put some people on notice,” Atkins said, laughing.

“Who knew Booker was still going to have football this year, right?”

That skill position talent includes junior returnees Gavin Stanford and Omarion Patterson, both of whom can play multiple positions.

I

t’s nearly impossible to build a sports program if the person doing the building keeps leaving.

Not only are the players asked to do different things by each coach, putting a hitch in their development, but the trust they have built up for each coach is eroded, too. It takes time for the next coach to earn it back.

The Cardinal Mooney High boys basketball program has been a victim of this issue. It didn’t used to; the Cougars had 11 years of steady coaching under Stefan Gates until 2016, when he stepped down to became an assistant principal at the school.

Since Gates left, the Cougars have had two years under Mike Urban, one season under John Luzzi and one season under Clayton Slentz, and they’re about to add another coach to the revolving door for 2021.

That’s not conducive to winning.

I’m not blaming any of the individual coaches for this. Life happens. There are plenty of reasons to leave a high school coaching gig after a season or two. I’m simply stating the impact a run of these short coaching stints has on a program

This next coach, though, might give the Cougars the stability they need.

Cardinal Mooney announced Aug. 11 that it hired former Riverview High two-sport star Vince Cherry as its next boys basketball coach. Cherry, 28, was an assistant varsity coach

with the Cougars last season and the school’s head junior varsity coach the two seasons prior. He’s seen the turnover the program has had and knows it needs to end. He also believes he’s capable of taking Mooney to new heights.

“The biggest thing is consistency,” Cherry said. “I’m going to be there. I’m hoping that me

stepping in with my relationships to the kids, it’ll be easier for them. They’ll be willing to take on the challenge.”

Cherry played for the Rams under Coach B.J. Ivey, the current Out-of-Door Academy coach who led Riverview to eight district titles and the 2016 state championship game in 13 seasons. Cherry said Ivey taught

him to realize there are more important things than wins and losses in coaching.

“The air is going to come out of the ball one day,” Cherry said.

“You’re going to be a person longer than you’re going to be a basketball player. (As a coach), you have to build character. You have to build relationships with these kids and not preach basketball all the time.”

Cherry will spend a lot of time on basketball, though. Cherry said he wants the hallmark of his Cougars teams to be tenacity, how hard they get after it on the court. Cherry wants to win, but he’s going to do it his way. The right way. The Cougars are going to get up and down the floor with tempo, Cherry said. They’re going to press offenses right in their faces, maybe for entire games. They’re going to make opponents feel as uncomfortable as possible. Cherry believes that will lead to wins.

If he sticks around to see his vision through, he might be right.

In other Cougars news, Cardinal Mooney named Drew Mitchell its assistant athletic director on Aug. 17. Mitchell has worked as an AD at Bradenton Christian School, Palmetto Charter School and Citrus Park Christian School in the past.

believes they’ll meet the challenge in front of them.

“We’re always open,” Patterson said of he and his teammates.

“It doesn’t really matter who is throwing us the ball, we’ll catch it.”

The Tornadoes will also have a senior running back (and safety) in Nate Williams and veteran bodies on the line of scrimmage, including junior David Bailey Jr. and Brandon Bass, who will play on the offensive and defensive lines. At a time when many other programs are struggling to develop young linemen, having experienced players there could give the Tornadoes an advantage.

The biggest issue for the team may be health; with so few players on the roster, Booker cannot afford to lose many starting players to injury.

Atkins said he does not believe missing a spring game will have a major effect on his team once the 2021 season arrives. The players were working just as hard at

practice and improving just as much, he said. Plus, the Tornadoes will have a tune-up game at 7 p.m. Friday at home against North Port High in the Preseason Classic. They will have work to do. Despite the amount of talent on the outside, a 1-7 team does not become a 7-1 team overnight, no matter how many seven-onseven camps it dominates. It will take a lot of hard work to turn the Tornadoes into legitimate contenders.

TheTornadoes’ schedule, which does not do them any favors, may force a full-on turnaround to wait one more season. Five of the team’s first six games occur on the road. That includes contests against local foes Sarasota High, Southeast High and the season opener against Cardinal Mooney High. If Booker can get through those six games in relatively good shape, however, it will have a chance to do something. The schedule opens up in the second half of the season, ending with four straight home games.

Even if 2021 is not Booker’s year to dominate, the Tornadoes have the talent to catch opponents offguard. If teams underestimate Booker, they may get tripped up.

The Unconditional Surrender statue has long towered over Sarasota, figuratively if not literally.

For some, it’s a tourist attraction that’s worth a visit and a selfie.

For others, it’s a lightning rod for discussions about art and appropriate behavior.

Fo r many more, it’s simply symbolic of America’s victory in battle and honors those who served.

mander Jim Berger is one such figure who says he views the statue with an appreciation of how that generation fought in World War II. “They were the greatest generation,” he said. “(The statue) represents the end of a terrible, terrible war.”

He’s not alone in that reverence. Veterans, city leaders and other supporters gathered last weekend at the statue’s new spot in Bayfront Park for a rededication ceremony.

The statue, mirroring the iconic news photo taken 71 years ago to the day on V-J Day in Times Square, was moved from Gulfstream Avenue in January to accommodate constructino of a new roundabout there.

Berger said the rededication, organized by his VFW Post, was first talked about when plans firmed up for the statue’s move.

Jan Hamel Solomon, Mayor Hagen Brody and others spoke about the statue’s legacy to an assembled crowd.

Former Vice Mayor Danny Bilyeu played taps on his trumpet later in the ceremony while VFW Honor Guard members paid their respects. It was a turnout that Berger appreciated.

“This statue is pride in our country,” Berger said.

The statue was purchased and then given to the city by Jack Curran, who was also a member of VFW Post 3233, in a tribute to veterans.

The event featured Jerry O’Donnell, an expert on the famed V-J Day photo taken by photojournalist Alfred Eisenstaedt.

O’Donnell said he was neighbors with George Mendonsa, the sailor kissing the woman in the photo, in Rhode Island in the 2000s.

O’Donnell flew in from Virginia, where he works with the U.S. Navy Warfare Development Command, to talk about growing to know Mendonsa and how he lived with the fame from the picture.

“He told me he was a World War II veteran,” O’Donnell said.

“He’s flipping through pictures of action that he’d seen, and the (V-J) photo comes up, and he matter-of-factly says, ‘That’s me.’ … Turns out it was him.”

He said his neighbor told him the woman in the photo, Greta Zimmer Friedman, was actually a dental assistant rather than a nurse as many people assume.

“It’s a little unreal (to see the statue),” O’Donnell said. “(Mendonsa) would be thrilled.”

The ceremony ended with a different showing of dedication.

For Philadelphia couple Tito Reyes and Taina Roman, the statue meant a great deal.

Roman has always adored the classic photograph.

“It’s this story of coming home,” she said. “It means everything.

(Tito) knows I love the idea.”

She and Reyes, her boyfriend, were visiting Sarasota to see Reyes’ family. To her surprise, Reyes took her to the statue’s ceremony.

She said she didn’t even know the statue existed until Saturday.

She didn’t expect the next part.

Reyes got to one knee and proposed to Roman right beneath the statue. To his and his family’s delight, she said yes.

“I’m feeling extremely loved,” Roman said.

reArte Latino Cultural Center is a local Spanish-language arts group. The nonprofit has been around since 2012. CreArte Latino was its first incarnation: a Spanish-language theater troupe doing a few plays a year on borrowed stages.

Now it’s building a new home.

We spoke about this milestone to Carolina Franco, CreArte Latino Cultural Center’s artistic director, president and co-founder. As she sees it, the group’s new name reflects its creative evolution.

No pressure, but are you ready to launch your new space?

Yes, almost. We still have a few loose ends. But we plan to open on Sept. 10, and I think we’ll meet the deadline. It’s all thanks to our volunteers — not just our own team members but people from across the community who believe in our mission. We obviously have to pay for things like electrical services and the fire alarm. But most of the work is donated labor. Our volunteers are just amazing.

What can we expect on your new stage? Have you nailed down your 2021-22 season yet?

What’s one of your favorite plays in the new season?

I really love “Taxímetro Adulterado” by Felipe Vallejo — a fantastic Colombian playwright.

He gave us the rights to stage his play with our own actors. We’re the only theater company in the world who got his permission. It was such an honor for us. We did four runs before the pandemic.

Now we’re bringing it back for our new season.

How would you describe the play?

It’s a comedy and a love story.

Hopefully, our audience will leave happier than they did coming in. People really need that right now.

I love your connection to a Colombian playwright. I’m imagining a global network of Spanish-speaking theater talents.

We’re also doing a celebration of Spanish Heritage Month, a show featuring a Spanish-speaking comedian, a bilingual improv night and a concert of music from the Andes. We’ve also featured dance and visual arts in our past seasons and differ-

Do you remember the day you made that choice?

It was more like a gradual evolution than a big decision.

CreArte Latino started out with a single focus: Make live theater accessible to Spanish-speaking audiences. So that’s what we did — and it’s all we did. We kept reminding people: “The theater, the theater. That is our identity!” But our identity was slowly changing. We started doing a few concerts along with the plays. Then we added other events, like guitar lessons, language classes, book clubs and art classes. We never stopped growing and expanding our work for the community. In the process, our mission evolved. We finally had to realize we’re more than a Spanish-language theater company now. We’re doing the work of a cultural center. That’s why we changed our name in 2019.
