Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto counties has had plenty of supporters throughout the year, but few as well known as Dick and Lorraine Vitale. The broadcaster and former basketball coach and his wife have provided club members with scholarships and support for the past 23 years. 2021 proved no different. The couple awarded five members with $1,000 scholarships on Aug. 11. Jordan Blake, Quinn DuBre, Laura Rodriguez-Saenz, Kassidy Saba and Axa Salas, all of whom went to either Sarasota High School or Riverview High School, received the scholarships.

YOUR TOWN
Temple Sinai’s interior has been refitted with vibrant stained-glass windows. Gwen Baseman Ziomek and Joe Ziomek recently donated the windows to the temple as a token of appreciation. Gwen, a past president with the temple, said she wanted to give a lasting gift and was inspired by the stained glass works of Marc Chagall. The window designs are meant to evoke the colorful feel of Torah covers. The windows were designed by artist David Ascalon and installed in early August.

Some members of the public say the city should solicit proposals from other interested parties, but multiple commissioners felt that would be unfair to the group that submitted the hotel and grocery store plan.
