Paint the bus

Artist Carrie Boucher has long brought her NOMAD art bus to communities in Florida for locals to paint.

The bus is now part of the Skyway 20/21 exhibition, a joint project between arts organizations in Tampa Bay, St. Petersburg, Sarasota and other areas. The legend goes that the wandering Scottish street cat could bring good fortune to the businesses that he passed. He even got his own statue in the Scottish town.

Heron had never seen the statue, but recently he and his wife, Diane, visited the Scottish town to do a few book readings. The couple of course took the time to take a pic with the titular cat’s statue.

No-swim advisories lifted The Florida Department of Health’s Sarasota office lifted no-swim advisories for several Sarasota-area beaches after follow-up water testing showed a satisfactory level of enterococcus bacteria.

Advisories for Bird Key Park/ Ringling Causeway, Turtle Beach, Nokomis Beach, Manasota Key, Venice Beach, Venice Pier and Blind Pass were up since late last week.

An advisory for Longboat Key was lifted last weekend.

The no-swim advisory signage will be removed; however, red tide advisory signage for the Karenia brevis algae bloom currently off the coastline will remain in place.

SRQ lands another record month

S

arasota-Bradenton International Airport continues its flight toward a record year in passenger traffic, setting a monthly mark in July with more than 326,000 arrivals and departures.

Across the month, 326,947 passengers used the airport, which was 122% more than 2019’s pre-pandemic mark for July of 147,068 and 424% higher than the 2020 level of 62,405 passengers.

The July traffic was 4.5% higher than June’s.

Save our Seabirds reopened to the public in July after months of pandemic-related closure.

With more than 20 years of experience, Virgin brings an extensive background in wildlife and environmental issues to the nonprofit. Most recently, he served as the philanthropy officer for Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium.

Over the next decade, the Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority intends to add more commercial, hotel and office space to the property it owns in north Sarasota, particularly on land along University Parkway.

Piccolo added that the airport recently tripled its jet fuel tank capacity with the addition of two 100,000-gallon tanks and expanded long-term parking by 140 spaces. Plans are moving ahead to pave the airport’s overflow lot.

hantrese Austin has taught elementary school since she stepped out of college and is familiar with all the feelings that come with the first day of school.

There’s the chaos of children arriving at their new classrooms.

There’s the joy of meeting her second grade students at Emma E. Booker Elementary School.

But this year, for the first time she can remember, there’s nervousness, too.

The Sarasota County School Board decided in early June on a policy that would allow parents and teachers to decide on masks while on campus. COVID-19 cases have risen rapidly in Sarasota and Florida over the past few weeks to the point that testing centers are reopening and local hospitals are revising visiting policies. And children under 12 are not yet approved for vaccines.

Keeping students masked and 6 feet apart every day was challenging last year, Austin said.

But now, beyond offering hand sanitizer and having students practice washing their hands, the 33-year-old teacher said she hopes parents choose to send their kids with masks.

“We’re walking into this delta variant that is supposed to be more contagious than the first,” Austin said. “I think putting 16 kids in a classroom with no masks on is not a good idea.”

On Tuesday, parents were able to follow their children into school to connect with their teachers and see the classrooms.

In a video released to parents Tuesday evening, Sarasota County Schools Superintendent Brennan Asplen said the district was suspending field trips and nonessential campus visits and volunteer opportunities for 30 days to minimize the potential for quarantining students and staff exposed to COVID-19.

Asplen acknowledged Gov. Ron DeSantis’ executive order requiring Florida districts to make maskwearing optional, but he urged mask use nonetheless.

“We strongly encourage those who are not eligible for a vaccination or who are unvaccinated to wear a face mask while indoors,” he said.

“We will mitigate the spread of the virus to the best of our ability within the guidelines set by the governor’s executive order, … in which masks are optional for this school year.”

Residents wary of shift in St. Armands zoning

Before fielding input on a proposal to revise St. Armands Circle zoning regulations to allow for taller buildings, hotel projects and more residential units, Geoffrey Michel encouraged the audience at a community workshop to push past any instincts to say “not in my backyard.”

“If I reflect back to John Ringling — he built a bridge so we could all come out here and enjoy it,” Michel said. “What if he said, ‘Not in my backyard,’ and he just wanted to keep this island to himself? … This is a place people want to be. Does that mean traffic? Of course it does. But anybody that’s concerned and angry about traffic, you weren’t the first one here, and you’re probably not going to be the last.”

Despite that plea from Michel, the owner of The Met and a member of the St. Armands Business Improvement District, traffic was a primary subject of discussion as

residents weighed in on the prospect of new building rules on the Circle. On Aug. 5, the city hosted a virtual workshop about a series of proposed comprehensive plan and zoning code amendments the BID is calling Vision 2026.

Since last year, the BID has been developing a plan for rewriting regulations on the Circle to accommodate renovations and redevelopment in the commercial tourist district. BID board members have framed their proposal as a necessary step to ensure St. Armands remains a lively destination into the future.

“I would encourage anybody to walk the Circle and see the need for improvement, see the need for change,” Michel said. “Not aggressive, high-rise, corporate change but community change and community evolution.”

At the Aug. 5 workshop, architect Dan Lear outlined the provisions included in the Vision 2026 proposal. Key changes include: n Increasing the maximum building height on the Circle from 35 feet to 45 feet above base elevation. n Allowing hotel development at a density of 150 units per acre. n Increasing residential density to 30 units per acre. n Establishing design standards for buildings and streetscapes.

commercial districts in Naples and Palm Beach, the presentation drew questions and concerns from most residents in attendance. Chris Goglia, the president of the St. Armands Residents Association, said the group intended to survey its members to get more detailed feedback to the proposed revisions. On first blush, however, Goglia said he believed resident support would hinge on the BID’s ability to conclusively demonstrate that its plans wouldn’t exacerbate existing issues related to congestion.

“The traffic is crazy, and we wish that people would acknowledge that and work to solve that problem,” Goglia said.

Carl Shoffstall, the president of the Lido Key Residents Association, expressed concern about the traffic associated with a hotel on the Circle. Shoffstall said he believed the BID needed to do more research to justify the desired changes.

“I don’t see what the hurry is on this,” Shoffstall said.

During the presentation, Michel said the new building regulations could provide benefits for residents, including a higherquality commercial district in close proximity to their homes.

Two speakers at the workshop expressed their support for the proposal, including Lido Key resident Michael Polelle, who said he

was excited about the prospect of the changes facilitating the construction of a convenience store on the barrier islands.

Polelle noted that traffic is attributable from trips starting on Lido and St. Armands, not just journeys from the mainland, and he said solving congestion issues was a separate task from considering the proposed changes.

“If this development doesn’t go ahead, we are still going to have traffic problems, and unless something is done, they’re going to get worse,” Polelle said.

The potential regulatory changes are being advanced separately from a proposal to build a hotel on the site of the Fillmore

Beset by lower-than-expected revenues attributable in part to the emergence of COVID-19, the city of Sarasota is preparing to raise some hourly parking rates on St. Armands Circle.

On Tuesday, Aug. 17, the City Commission will consider a proposal to change the parking regulations on the Circle. The changes would establish a single on-street parking zone, raising the rate of outlying spaces from $1 per hour to $1.50 per hour, the current price for core spaces. The rate for core spaces would not change. The city is also proposing to raise the rate for the Fillmore Street parking lot from $0.75 an hour to $1.

The St. Armands parking garage, which costs $0.50 per hour to park in, would switch to a new pricing structure.

Users could park for free for two hours, but beginning in the third hour, the city would

The City Commission is scheduled to discuss the future of the Fillmore Drive lot at a meeting Monday, Aug. 16.

Following the workshop, the BID intends to review the public input and finalize language for a formal application with the city.

Depending on the text of that final proposal, the group could be required to hold another community workshop. According to Lear,

During a July budget workshop, Parking Manager Mark Lyons said he reached out to St. Armands stakeholders to get input on prospective changes. Based on the feedback he received, he said property owners and merchants expressed a desire to establish regulations similar to those in place in downtown Sarasota.

City staff is proposing the adoption of downtown’s hours of operation — 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday — and a provision allowing 10 minutes of free parking.

The city estimated the changes would generate $508,526 in new revenue.

The city is using revenue from the St. Armands paid parking program to fund a bond issued for construction of the St. Armands parking garage.

Although there were vocal reservations about the BID’s preliminary proposal at the Aug. 5 workshop, St. Armands property owners remain steadfast in their belief that changes are necessary to maintain the quality and character of the Circle.

Sarasota County staff has determined the proposed development of two hotels on Siesta Key does not require the adoption of a pair of comprehensive plan amendments, removing a regulatory hurdle for projects that have drawn vocal opposition from island residents.

tain properties in the south bridge area are permitted to be redeveloped with hotels that exceed existing density restrictions in the zoning code. In a December 2020 application to the county, Bailey wrote that existing regulations prohibit future development on the barrier islands in excess of standards established in 1989. Bailey said the amendment would “afford greater opportunity” to place a hotel on Siesta Key. The amendment associated with the Calle Miramar project seeks to eliminate the 1989 standard for any hotels built on barrier islands properties carrying the commercial general zoning designation. Merrill, too, wrote that the provision would facilitate hotel development in a December 2020 letter.

In January, the County Commission voted unanimously in favor of advancing both amendments. Before the amendments could be adopted, the proposals would require a community workshop and three public hearings, according to a staff memo.

On the same day in May, both attorneys sent a letter to the county withdrawing their applications. Dary’s response to both was nearly identical, changing only the identifying code associated with the proposed amendment. Dary said both attorneys provided written analysis demonstrating the proposed projects are consistent with the county’s comprehensive plan, stating the hotels could already be allowed by right or by special exception under existing regulations.

“Staff has reviewed the analysis and agrees with the premise and finding as the impetus of your withdrawal,” Dary wrote.

At an Aug. 5 Siesta Key Association meeting, Spiegel provided an update on the status of the hotel projects to the resident group. SKA board members also expressed frustration about the county’s handling of the development applications, and although the group raised a series of objections questioning whether the project complies with applicable land-use regulations, Spiegel emphasized the effects of foregoing the consideration of the proposed amendments.

The county is scheduled to begin its public review of the hotel proposals this month, with the Calle Miramar application going in front of the Planning Commission on Aug. 19. That project and the Old Stickney Point proposal are scheduled to go to the County Commission in October and November, respectively.

There are two additional proposed hotel developments on Siesta Key: a 100-room hotel at 5810 Midnight Pass Road and a 170-room resort on Ocean Boulevard in Siesta Key Village.

Don’t close the door on Siesta Key

iesta Key is an amazing place to live and invest in property. That’s why people have homes there; that’s why so many visitors come to stay there each year. When people buy a home there, they do so because they want to enjoy all the great things about living there, now and in the future.

They expect to use that property for their enjoyment.

But three proposals to build boutique hotels on the Key have set off a strong reaction. Should current residents be able to deny other current property owners the use of their land for development?

The Stop High Density Hotels movement seeks to do just that.

Signs reading “Stop High Density Hotels” have sprung up the length of the Key, including in front of many massive, highdensity condominium resorts with hundreds of units, as shown in the accompanying pictures.

This looks like people saying, “I got mine, now let’s shut the door,” and that is not fair or consistent.

Siesta Key does not need to close the door. The Key has zoning and the county has a planning process and impact fees specifically designed to analyze the effects of a new building project and to limit it to reasonable standards and provide for mitigation of external effects, such as traffic. This is a system designed to protect those already living here from careless side effects of new development while allowing property owners to build if they want.

But saying “stop” as soon as a project is proposed rejects any analysis of project impacts, refuses to allow the process to work and jumps to the conclusion of closing the door.

No one prevented a current resident of Siesta Key from enjoying the development of their property, and it is wrong to turn around and deny that same right to the next property owner down the road.

OK, TRAFFIC

I’ll concede that traffic on Siesta Key can be terrible at times, though still a very small number of hours per year, mainly the beach rush hours in March and April.

The way to address that is not to forbid property owners from making reasonable use of their property. We need to keep working on improving the transportation options, the flow of traffic and better parking options on the Key. The Siesta Trolley has had a significant impact and shows that we can make progress there.

At the same time, congestion is an inherent part of a very desirable place — that is a global

reality, and it’s a small price to pay for enjoying life on the Key. A FAIR APPROACH

There’s a better way for people with legitimate concerns about development or other activities to take control without forcing everyone to comply or shutting the door to the Key. A number of condominium associations and homeowner associations already do so. If property owners want to come together and agree to put limitations, covenants and conditions on the use of their own properties, that is perfectly within their rights. Such an organization can preserve or shape a neighborhood to align with what the property owners agree to in advance and binds future property owners as well. If some owners are unwilling to join, the organization can choose to buy them out.

Purchasing a property to shape the way it is developed is the moral and just way to influence development — not asking the government to stop others from getting what you got. Owners should have full use of their property as the law or contract stood at the time they bought it.

INCORPORATING SIESTA KEY WON’T HELP

Unfortunately, the newly minted “Save Siesta Key” movement, pushing for incorporation of the Key into its own city, seems focused on the power to say “stop” to almost everything.

The county has taken sensible approaches to development consistent with the General Plan and to regulating activities on the Key, such as free shuttles, micro mobility, vacation homes, events, etc.

Residents do not need to venture into more and preemptive regulations. Siesta Key does not need be governed by a handful of

TAKE THE HIGH ROAD

Siesta Key is a gem where it is a joy to live. Reasonable development that allows others to enjoy it, as residents or visitors, is not an enemy that needs to be stopped, but a reasonable decision by our neighbors.

The old saying “Don’t fix it if it’s not broken” applies. For the most part, Siesta Key works very, very well. Let’s work together on the few real problems we have, such as improving traffic in ways that don’t take away anything from others.

Let’s be generous, welcoming and consistent.

Newtown museum pitched as cultural catalyst Negotiations with the city begin after an outpouring of support for a proposed African American art center and history museum.

or more than two hours Aug. 2, members of the public came before the City Commission and urged the board to move forward with a proposal to build an African American art center and history museum on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way. To Vickie Oldham, a leading organizer behind the museum concept, the breadth of support was a tangible sign of progress in her efforts to preserve and document the history of Sarasota’s Black community.

“From my standpoint, it appears that people are really understanding the challenges that we face as it relates to this racial reckoning that’s happening not only in the U.S. but in the world,” Oldham said. “I can see that people get it, and I can see that the work that we began with the city in 2015 is gaining traction.”

Oldham is the president and CEO of the Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition, a group founded in 2018 with the mission of creating a museum showcasing the history and cultural contributions of Black

Sarasota residents. The coalition developed out of the Newtown Alive project, which the city backed in 2015 to produce research and multimedia content about the Black community.

In 2018, the city adopted an agreement that provided the Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition with $200,000 in seed money toward the art center and history museum concept. As part of that agreement with the city, SAACC was responsible for researching site options and presenting them to the city. SAACC leadership focused its attention on city-owned land at Dr. Martin Luther King Way and Orange Avenue, with the possibility of incorporating more adjacent vacant land.

At the Aug. 2 City Commission meeting, SAACC presented an update on its planning work and asked officials for permission to discuss an agreement that would allow the group to use the 1.3-acre property. The commission voted 5-0 to direct staff to negotiate a land-use deal that would facilitate the development of a cultural center, bringing back a proposal for consideration at a future meeting.

The commission did have a series of questions about how the museum would look in reality.

In particular, multiple commissioners expressed their interest in incorporating a mixture of uses into the development of the cityowned property, including a residential component, if possible.

Commissioner Kyle Battie said he wanted any project on the land to serve as a catalyst for a neighborhood in need of revitalization.

“That’s why it’s imperative that there be mixed use because that’s going to be the economic driver,” Battie said.

During the presentation, representatives for SAACC said the museum would have economic benefits for Newtown on its own, citing data on cultural tourism in Sarasota and the success of similar projects in cities including Jackson, Mississippi, and Montgomery, Alabama. The group indicated a willingness to explore opportunities to incorporate different uses onto the site, citing SAACC’s 45-partner organizations as a potential resource for

facilitating a residential or commercial component of the project.

Still, Oldham and others noted there was a finite amount of space on the property, cautioning that not everything officials desired may be possible. During the Aug. 2 meeting, Mayor Hagen Brody said that the feasibility of multiple uses could be an important factor when officials consider whether to continue pursuing the museum project.

“Ultimately, if mixed-use does not work and cannot work, then we’ll have to revisit it and see if that’s something that we want to move forward on,” Brody said.

Despite that lingering question, Oldham said she was thrilled with the outcome of the commission meeting. As negotiations with the city begin, SAACC is also preparing to undertake a fundraising campaign to support the museum project. According to the group’s presentation, the first phase of that campaign will begin this fall with a goal of $5 million.

Even before that gets underway, Oldham said the group has already received support from Sarasota’s philanthropic community, including one gift of $150,000 to underwrite the fundraising campaign. Between the financial support and the testimony encouraging the city to move forward, Oldham said she’s grateful for the momentum the community has given to the museum concept.

“People are already giving, and that shows me they support what we’re doing,” Oldham said. “It is very, very encouraging.”

Downtown group invests in art festival concept Could all of Sarasota’s arts and cultural organizations come together to put on a destination festival showcasing local performers? The Downtown Improvement District wants to make it happen.

ark Kauffman has a big idea, but he thinks part of its beauty lies in its simplicity.

Kauffman, a downtown property owner, wants to help organize a Sarasota arts festival that features performances across a variety of mediums — theater, orchestra, opera, ballet and more.

Given the region’s reputation as a cultural hub on Florida’s west coast, Kauffman believes such a festival is a logical undertaking for Sarasota’s arts community, and the feedback he’s gotten thus far has vindicated that belief.

“Anyone who’s heard about this is so enthusiastic about it,” Kauffman said. “They ask the same question: Why hasn’t it been done before? It’s so obvious.”

On Aug. 3, Kauffman presented information about his vision to the Downtown Improvement District, a self-taxing group of property owners for which he serves on the board of directors. Once again, he found a receptive audience: At

the conclusion of the conversation, the DID board voted 5-0 to approve allocating $100,000 toward the art festival concept.

For the presentation, Kauffman was joined by Jim Shirley, the executive director of the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County, and Jeffery Kin, the artistic director for The Players Centre for Performing Arts. Both Shirley and Kin shared Kauffman’s excitement about the potential to put together an annual festival as a destination event and a showcase for local artists.

“From the first moment I heard about this idea from Dr. Kauffman, I was completely sold,” Kin said.

Shirley said the Arts and Cultural Alliance could serve as a leading supporter for the event as an organizing group comes together, and Kin expressed an interest in taking a leading role in coordinating the festival. Kauffman envisioned taking three years to put the inaugural festival together, a timeline with which Kin said he agreed.

Kin said the first steps would

have to be simple, starting a conversation within the arts community about fundamental details for a festival. Who’s interested in participating? When could it realistically be held? What would it be called? Kin said it was important to be meticulous early on to set up the festival for longterm success.

Both Kin and Shirley noted that an arts festival featuring a variety of local organizations wasn’t an entirely new idea, but that sort of concept hasn’t been able to come together in the past. Kin said the leaders of this initiative would need to showcase why this iteration of the idea would succeed. He said it was helpful that this proposal originated with a private group of property owners, which could allow the festival to present itself as an independent entity that would treat all participating arts organizations equally.

“Some of the arts groups, when you mention a festival, will be like, ‘Well, we’ve heard this before — how is this going to be different?’” Kin said to the DID board.

“I think this very meeting and your investment is what makes this different.”

DID board member Ron Soto questioned why the downtown group would be a leading investor in the festival if the venues would span all of Sarasota. Shirley and Kin said the festival could start with a greater presence in the downtown area, but they also expressed interest in seeking additional financial support from other corners of the community.

“There’s only one way you’re going to build a big festival,” Shirley said. “That’s to embrace that bigness.”

Ultimately, the DID board was unanimous in its support for the festival concept.

“I just think this is a gamechanger,” Kauffman said. “It could grow into something huge.

It could put Sarasota on the cultural map that it deserves to be on.”

Facts about COVID Vaccines

Here are some common myths that have been driving vaccine hesitancy. The facts are provided by Sarasota Memorial Infectious Disease Specialist Manuel Gordillo, MD, as well as information from the CDC and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

With COVID infections and hospitalizations surging, if you had been taking a “wait and see” approach, now is the time to get the shot and protect yourself, your loved ones and the community.

Myth: I’m young (or I’m healthy), so I don’t need to get vaccinated.

FACT: While younger adults are less likely than the elderly to die of COVID-19, the disease can still be dangerous for them. Studies indicate that among adults age 18 to 39 who developed COVID-19, nearly 30% now suffer from “long-hauler” symptoms, including fatigue, brain fog and loss of taste or smell. Many of these young adults had only a mild case of COVID-19 when they were first infected.

Myth: Break-through infections prove the vaccines don’t work against the new Delta variant.

FACT: While mild breakthrough infections may be more common than once thought, the main goal of the vaccines is to prevent severe disease and death. That is something all of the vaccines do really well. They prevent hospitalization and severe disease in 90% of people who get a break-through infection. If you are vaccinated and get the infection, chances are you’ll get very mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.

Myth: The vaccine may prevent pregnancy, or harm an unborn baby by altering our DNA. FACT: COVID-19 vaccines do not alter recipients’ DNA; as a result, they cannot cause any genetic changes to mom or the unborn baby.

There also is no evidence that vaccination causes any problems with pregnancy. The pregnancy prevention myth has been perpetuated by a sophisticated disinformation campaign that falsely claims antibodies to the vaccines’ COVID-19 spike protein will bind to placental proteins and prevent pregnancy. On the surface, it may seem based on science, but it is not true.

In addition, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) says current reports suggest that pregnant and recently pregnant women have a higher risk for more severe illness from COVID-19 than nonpregnant women. ACOG and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine both recommend that all pregnant women be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Myth: I shouldn’t get the vaccine if I’m breastfeeding.

FACT: ACOG recommends that breastfeeding women get a COVID-19 vaccine, and says there is no need to stop breastfeeding if you want to get vaccinated. When you get vaccinated, the antibodies made by your body can be passed through breastmilk and help protect your child from the virus.

Myth: I might get COVID-19 from the vaccine.

FACT: None of the authorized vaccines in the U.S. contain live virus. This means that the vaccine cannot make you sick with COVID-19.

Short-term symptoms that may follow a vaccination are normal and show that your body is building protection against the virus.

Myth: COVID-19 vaccines were developed too fast to be safe.

FACT: Both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are mRNA vaccines, which are not new. Scientists have been working on mRNA vaccines for decades for a variety of illnesses — SARS, MERS, Zika, Ebola, newer influenza vaccines and even some seasonal coronaviruses — and that gave them a huge head start when it was time to work on COVID-19 vaccines.

The other type of authorized COVID-19 vaccine (Johnson & Johnson) employs a weakened adenovirus, which also has been studied extensively in developing other vaccines. Additional reviews by the CDC and FDA have found the J&J vaccine is safe and effective in preventing COVID-19 among anyone age 18 and older. Women under age 50 concerned about the very rare risk of the clotting disorder should know that there are other COVID-19 vaccine options available (the clots have not been associated with the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines).

The clinical trials for the 3 authorized COVID-19 vaccines were all done with the same rigor applied to all vaccine trials, and the results were reviewed and approved by multiple independent advisory panels.

Myth: I need to wait for full FDA approval to get vaccinated.

FACT: With the Delta variant and increased transmission, the CDC says it’s more urgent than ever to get vaccinated as soon as possible, and the authorized vaccines are safe and effective: The 3 available vaccines have met the FDA’s rigorous scientific standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality needed to support emergency use authorization (EUA). The vaccines were evaluated in tens of thousands of participants in clinical trials.

Millions of people in the U.S. have received the vaccines since they were authorized for emergency use.

According to the CDC, the vaccines have undergone and will continue to undergo the most intensive safety monitoring in U.S. history.

This monitoring includes using both established and new safety monitoring systems to make sure vaccines are safe.

The FDA itself has emphasized that it conducted a thorough scientific evaluation of each of the authorized vaccines and can assure the public and medical community that the vaccines meet FDA’s rigorous standards for safety, effectiveness and manufacturing quality.

Myth: Possible long-term side effects are too risky since we don’t know what they are yet.

FACT: With any vaccine, any side effects will typically show up within 6 weeks after the injection. Vaccines have been studied over decades, and do not typically have delayed or long-term side effects. Some, like the smallpox vaccine, are very, very old, and none have resulted in side effects 10 or 20 years later. Conversely, we don’t know what the long-term effects of getting the virus are — and those are more likely to be problematic.

Myth: I have allergies, so it’s not worth the risk.

FACT: Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to the vaccines have been very rare, averaging just 2.5 per 1 million vaccinations with the Moderna vaccine and 4.7 per 1 million vaccinations with the Pfizer vaccine. To put that in perspective, anaphylaxis to penicillin occurs in 1 in 25,000 recipients.

If you have concerns, certainly talk to your doctor and plan to wait 30 minutes after getting your shots for observation. If you are severely allergic to any of the vaccine’s ingredients, you should not be vaccinated. People with allergies to certain foods, insects, latex and other common allergens, however, can get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Myth: The vaccines contain unsafe toxins and microchips.

FACT: Microchips are not injected into anyone. That is physically impossible. Microchips are, however, located on the vaccine packaging so that pharmacists and physicians can track doses and ensure they’re not expired or counterfeit. The vaccines’ ingredient list includes mRNA (which is destroyed by the body in a day or two), cholesterol (in amounts much lower than is already consumed by people) and non-toxic fatty molecules.

FACT: According to the CDC, you should be vaccinated regardless of whether you already had COVID-19. That’s because experts do not yet know how long you are protected from getting sick again after recovering. Having an infection does NOT guarantee a strong immune defense. Research indicates that immunity from vaccination is likely to be stronger than immunity following infection.

Students spend summer building microforest Faulhaber Fab Lab students worked to design and install a microforest at Nathan Benderson Park.

M

any students spend their summer breaks relaxing on the beach, but one group of high school and college students spent their break planting a forest.

Summer interns at the Faulhaber Fab Lab, in partnership with SURF — an organization comprising Florida Veterans for Common Sense Fund, Rotary Club of Sarasota Bay and Solutions to Avoid Red Tide — are working to design and plant a microforest at Nathan Benderson Park.

The microforest, made up of more than 50 types of native plant life, will help filter runoff and prevent harmful nutrients from entering waterways.

This, in turn, will keep nutrients that can intensify red tide out of the bay.

Twenty student volunteers are working in groups to design the park, choose which plants will work best, create informational signs and promote the team’s efforts on social media.

The students are part of the lab’s Suncoast Science Center’s Student Community Innovation Program, which launched last year.

Each year, the students get to work on a community project.

Students are now working with SURF on the second microforest in Sarasota County. The first was planted at Celery Fields.

Throughout the summer, the students spent 100 hours working on the project.

“It’s amazing to see how dedicated the students are,” said Mimi Faulhaber, an adviser for the project. “From day one, they’ve come in here and gotten right to work, and it’s a really great to see them be so passionate about the climate and leaving a positive impact.”

Microforests were first popularized by a Japanese engineer named Akira Miyawaki. The method involves planting two to four trees in about 10-square-feet of space.

The forests can help lower temperatures of the ground, reduce air pollution, attract local wildlife and capture carbon emissions.

Project Manager Charles Reith said it’s exciting to see a younger generation get involved with climate efforts.

“Climate is now not a cuttingedge problem. It is the existential crisis that underpins the quality of life for humans,” Reith said. “If

we don’t solve it, people are going to really suffer. But these kids get that, and they want to help.”

Aside from the eventual climate benefits, the students are designing the forest so that visitors to Nathan Benderson Park can someday walk through it and learn about the forest, how it helps the environment and native plants that they could use to help the environment in their homes.

Currently, the plant life will need periodic care. However, the goal is that the forest will be selfsustaining in three years.

Throughout their work, students are paired with industry professionals to help guide their research and efforts.

Krystal Tran, a rising junior and member of the communications team, said the program has helped her interest in communications grow.

“I’m learning a lot of things that I never knew how to do before,” Tran said. “The things I’m learning I can take with me after the project and use for the rest of my life, which I think will be helpful when I have a professional career.”

Sahil Agarwal, a rising senior and member of the engineering team, said it was great to not only get real-life experience on the project but to also build something that will impact Sarasota for generations to come.

“We all worked on this for one summer, but it’s going to sit there for 20, 30, 40 years,” Agarwal said.

“We can come back later and look.

It’s really cool to think about how we built something that thousands of people will benefit from.”

A creative Sarasota husbandand-wife team has launched a set of Spanish-verb flashcards in the hopes that parents and teachers will use them as tools to help students learn the language.

Spanish is now the most studied language in the U.S. other than English. Sandra Marquez Stathis and husband Tom Stathis developed the set of 98 colorcoded verbs, including 10 “power verbs” that they say will help jump-start kids ages 5 and older to become bilingual.

The new venture is called Monkey Wonder, and the name was spawned from a cherished stuffed Curious George toy that was Marquez Stathis’ travel companion as a child. “I have always loved monkeys,” she said.

Growing up, Marquez Stathis, who is Colombian American, spent four years living in Saudi Arabia, where her father worked as an engineer. Upon graduating from college, she lived in Haiti for four years, where she worked as a human rights observer and journalist. She speaks English, French, Spanish and Haitian Creole. “I have seen firsthand how languages open doors and create connection,” said Marquez Stathis, who has been teaching her two children how to speak Spanish.

Sandra and Tom, a photo editor who worked with the Associated Press in New York, California and Arizona before retiring to Sarasota in 2016, created the cards, which feature Oliver the Monkey, who travels throughout Spain and Latin America to showcase heritage, landmarks and culture.

The couple said the focus on verbs is what sets Monkey Wonder apart. “Too often, children in traditional elementary school Spanish programs spend years learning nouns and adjectives.

They can walk around a room and

point to things and name them — silla (chair), lápiz (pencil), pelota roja (red ball) — but they struggle to form a sentence,” Marquez Stathis said.

The card set is color-coded into four categories: power verbs, -ar verbs, -er verbs and -ir verbs.

At the top of the pack are the 10 power verbs, among the most essential in Spanish, including the Spanish verbs for “to be,” “to have” and “to go.”

“Just learning the 10 power verbs will put a child so far ahead in their Spanish language ability,” Marquez Stathis said.

The U.S. is on track to become the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world by 2050, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Schools in 35 states now offer dual-language immersion programs. The trend is reflected in Sarasota, where dual-language charter school Dreamers Academy opened this week.

The Stathis’ 13-year-old son, Alexander, even contributed two verbs to the set.

“One day, he said, ‘Mom, do you have jugar (to play) and pescar (to fish)?’” Marquez Stathis recalled.

She checked her spreadsheet and saw that those two verbs had not yet been included. “It made me so happy that he was adding words that kids needed for their lives.”

MOVING VIOLATION 11:44 a.m. — 2600 block of Ringling Boulevard Dispute: A woman said a moving company charged her to move 800 square feet of her belongings, but she believed her belongings should have only taken up 500 square feet, which would result in a lower fee. The woman wanted the movers to repack the truck to show the belongings could fit within 500 square feet. An officer told the woman he was not authorized to make the movers rearrange her belongings, and the movers said they could not do so if they wanted. The officer advised the woman to dispute the charges with the company at a later date.

DISPUTED CLAIMS 4:40 p.m. — 2700 block of Riverside Drive Dispute: A man called the police after seeing a woman attempt to remove items from a property.

The man said he was in the midst of a legal challenge with the property owner about ownership of the items. The woman said the property owner told her she could take whatever she wanted from the property, but she did not have the owner’s contact information or any written claim to that effect. An officer advised the woman not to remove the property without a judge’s order or the presence of the property owner. Both parties agreed to leave the area.

POLE OUT OF POSITION 7:08 p.m. — 1500 block of Main Street Property damage: The manager of a bar reported that a customer came in the night before and caused approximately $500 worth of damage to the floor.

According to information an officer gathered, the customer was intoxicated and got into an argument with patrons at another table. The customer began to beat his own chest and was holding onto a pole next to the bar in frustration. The customer eventually broke the pole, damaging the bottom support apparatus that was connected to the floor. Officers were unable to get in contact with the customer.

PARTIAL CREDIT 9:03 p.m. — 4800 block of South Tamiami Trail Dispute: An employee at a hotel reported that a guest was irate because the business would not offer a full refund for his room.

The guest reportedly wanted a different room and a refund because he was not satisfied with the original room the hotel gave him. The hotel agreed to refund a $20 security deposit but would not return the rest of the cost of the room. The guest reportedly left the area on his own after being told to return the next day to speak to a manager.

Max was truly a “renaissance man,” working as a carpenter, contractor, and businessman throughout his life, retiring from Heartland Park Homes in Arcadia, FL. Max enjoyed nature and its beauty; he was an avid fisherman, gardener, cyclist and windsurfer. He prided himself on his cooking and beer and wine making. Max was a creator, whether it was woodworking, soapmaking or stained glass. He had a passion for music and played several instruments. He loved dogs and racehorses.

After another deep playoff run in 2020, the Riverview High football team has to replace important contributors at key positions in 2021.

That would spell trouble for many programs.

With the Rams’ talent, however, it’s less of a concern, and Coach Josh Smithers is eager to see how that talent translates to the field.

“We have had a real good offseason,” Smithers said.

“We feel like our kids have done a lot of developing over the summer. I’m excited. Our first five games are tough. We’ll find out pretty quick what we’re all about.”

The most interesting aspect of the Rams might be their quarterback situation, which is far from settled. Smithers said the team has four quarterbacks competing for the position.

Joe Borchers, a junior, transferred to the Rams from IMG Academy. Borchers started the Rams’ spring game, a 39-0 win against South Fort Myers on May 27, and Smithers said if the season started at the beginning of regular-season practice sessions, Borchers would be under center.

Will Carter, a junior, was the program’s 2020 starter on a junior varsity team that finished 5-0. Smithers said Carter might be the fastest player in the Rams program, regardless of position.

Then there are Jackson Dawson, a senior, and Jeremiah Dawson, a sophomore. The Dawsons are brothers who moved to Sarasota from Warsaw, Indiana, during the offseason. Smithers said he knows the least about these two because they’re so new to the program, but he’s going to give them a fair shot. Smithers also said he would consider using two quarterbacks if he thought that was best for the team, especially if they bring different skills.

Smithers said the Rams are thin there.

Staying healthy will be important, he said, but so will seasonlong improvement. The Rams have a lot of talent in the skill positions, but if they’re not given time and space to utilize those players, it won’t matter.

Under-the-radar players: Smithers said fans should watch for sophomore Charles Lester, who will see time at both cornerback and wide receiver, as well as the team’s whole linebacker corps, which includes senior brothers Bo and Brady Bloom.

On defense, the Rams will return second-leading tackler Tyre Smith (62 tackles), a senior linebacker, as well as senior linebackers Brady and Bo Bloom (45 and 40 tackles). Smithers said senior Sean Buchanan will take the fourth linebacker spot. Lester will be the leader in the secondary, which loses two key members in the now-graduated Sambo Ung Jr. and James Simmons, who transferred to Palmetto High for his senior season.

Although the Rams have a difficult schedule, including road games against Venice High, Seminole High and Lake Gibson High, their players are confident the 2021 season can be special.

“Man, the stars are the limit for us,” Birch said. “We have so much talent. We just have to make sure we lock in and do our jobs, and everything’s going to be great.”

Falling forward New coaches and a chance for repeat titles are some of the intriguing storylines to follow.

W

ith all the attention high school football gets this time of year, I always feel a little bad for the other fall sports.

Not because football doesn’t deserve the attention but because the other fall sports do too.

There are so many great athletes in volleyball, swimming, golf and cross-country that, while we’re in the middle of our football previews, I couldn’t leave everyone else out entirely.

That’s why I’m using this column to highlight some storylines and players I’m looking forward to following in the other fall sports this season.

I want to see how the Cardinal Mooney High volleyball program does under new management.

Chad Sutton did a phenomenal job of building it into a state title-winning program before leaving for Purdue University late last year. New Coach Chad Davis was on Sutton’s staff for two seasons prior to Sutton leaving, including the 2019 championship team, which should help with making the transition smooth. Still, Davis will be

implementing his own ideas, and I’m interested in seeing if they can elevate the program to even further heights.

The Cougars do return an outside hitter/middle blocker in junior Jordyn Byrd, which should help with any early-season uneasiness.

Riverview High should also have a strong team once again, led by senior McKenna Flaherty, who is committed to Florida State (for beach volleyball, but still). The Rams won the Sunshine State Athletic Conference Class 2A state beach volleyball title in the spring, and although it doesn’t directly translate to indoor volleyball success — not all of the players are the same on both teams, for example — it also doesn’t hurt to have more players with big-game experience.

By the way, the Cougars and Rams play each other early in the season Aug. 31. These matches are usually can’t-miss, and I wouldn’t expect this one to be any different. See you at the Rams’ gym at 7 p.m.?

In the water, I am anxious to see if the Sarasota High boys swimming team can repeat as state champs. I imagine they won’t be able to do it without winning any gold medals again.

That was a feat of team depth, and an impressive one, but a rarity. Plus, I have to imagine the Sailors nab gold in something

Gracie Weyant — the sister of Olympic silver medalist Emma Weyant — who won the 100 backstroke (1:01.51).

Cardinal Mooney junior Michaela Mattes will also have a chance to repeat in the girls 200 individual medley (2:01.10) and in the 500 freestyle (4:47.19).

As for cross-country, I’m waiting for the next area superstar to emerge. One always does, like Sarasota High’s Orlando Cicilioni last year. Cicilioni finished ninth at the Class 4A state meet (16:05.70). Maybe it is Sailors junior Will Hartvigsen, the brother of former state champion Ben Hartvigsen, who

this year. They were second in three relays, and Liam Heary, now a junior, was second individually in the 100 breaststroke (56.58). I expect a breakthrough in at least one of those events.

Riverview has three individual gold medal winners with a chance to repeat: boys senior Liam Custer, who won the 200 individual medley (1:47.41) and the 500 freestyle (4:21.41); girls sophomore Addison Sauickie, who won the 500 freestyle (4:47.23); and girls sophomore

finished 49th at the state meet as a sophomore (16:58.40).

If there’s things you are looking forward to seeing that are not featured here, let me know so I can watch for them too. I say this every year, but it truly does look like a great year for area fall sports, and every year I am inevitably proven correct by these incredible athletes.

INTO KINDNESS Kaitlin Johnstone, a former Alta Vista Elementary teacher, launched Kind Cotton to help promote child literacy.

Some of Kaitlin Johnstone’s fondest memories revolve around bedtime stories.

She would get tucked in and listen as her parents read about Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Donald Duck’s latest adventure.

However, when she was a kin-

dergarten teacher at Alta Vista Elementary School, she noticed that many of her students didn’t have the same experience.

“I found myself consistently letting my students take books from my classroom library and keep them because literacy is just so important to me,” she said.

However, that wasn’t a sustainable way to ensure access to literature.

One day, she asked her husband, Kevin, who works in custom apparel, to combine their expertise to create a company that could spread a message of kindness while also gifting books to children in need.

Thus, Kind Cotton, an online apparel store, was launched in 2017. Kind Cotton features clothing and educational accessories with positive messages.

The company runs with a similar model to Toms shoes, where each purchase ensures a book will be given to a child in need. To date, the company has given out more than 33,000 books.

“It is incredibly gratifying to truly help communities that have a lack of resources,” Johnstone said. “We love what we’re doing.

I feel like we’ve created such a community around redefining kindness and trying to do what’s right.”

As an educator, Johnstone said that she saw a lack of books in which children felt represented.

In the past two years, Kind Cotton has placed an emphasis on gifting books written by authors who are Black, people of color and indigenous.

“Books should truly be mirrors and windows,” Johnstone said. “A mirror so that you can see yourself and feel like there’s a wonderful representation of your community and windows so you can look into someone else’s culture.”

Johnstone has two favorites: “Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut” by Derrick Barnes and “I Am Enough” by Grace Byers.

Johnstone also hosted afterschool programs at Alta Vista where she would read a book and lead an activity. Children would

then go home with the book read during the program.

She had to stop the program during COVID-19 but hopes to bring it back soon. Kind Cotton still donated a book a month for every children in the Alta Vista aftercare program.

Finally, the company’s newest venture is Little Free Libraries.

A concept across the U.S., Little Free Libraries typically run on a leave-one-take-one model.

Those who need or want a book are encouraged to take one without leaving anything behind.

“We didn’t ever want anyone to feel like they have to bring a book in order to take one,” Johnstone said. “We just want students who frequent these places to take a book once a week, once a day — whenever they want a new book.”

The first library is located in Oneco Farmers Market in Bradenton. The company plans to open another in Newtown in September. Johnstone will restock the libraries about once a week.

At the moment, Kind Cotton does most of its business in Florida. However, Johnstone hopes the company could one day become sustainable nationwide.

For now, though, she’s happy knowing she’s helping children.

“There’s just something about reading with a child and seeing them connect with their sense of wonder and creativity and critical thinking,” she said. “There’s nothing better than that to me.”

t was a familiar scene for Sarasota’s fishing lovers on Aug. 7 when boats arrived at Marina Jack full of fish as part of the Sarasota Slam fishing tournament.

The Manatee-Sarasota Building Industry Association-hosted tournament, which started Aug. 3, attracted 51 boats.

It was a slower tournament than usual — the red tide in Sarasota had some inshore teams struggling to find as many fish as usual — but MSBIA CEO John Mast was still happy to see the number of participants.

The highlights of the weigh-in were a pair of massive warsaw groupers caught by Gulf Shore Offshore and the Double Nickels. Gulf Shore Offshore’s grouper weighed at 320 pounds while the Double Nickel’s fish broke Sarasota Slam records at 400 pounds.

ate Walsh Honea remembers the moment she knew her dream of being a ballet dancer had come true.

Walsh Honea, 38, had joined the Sarasota Ballet as an apprentice in 1997 before returning in 2002, and she became a principal dancer in 2009. It was when she was performing Sir Frederick Ashton’s “La fille mal gardée” at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in 2013, being held aloft by three fellow dancers on a massive stage and looking out to a full audience, that she realized how far she’d come.

“I remember thinking ‘This is the real deal,’” Walsh Honea said.

After 19 seasons dancing, she’s decided it’s time for a change.

Walsh Honea has departed the company to take a position as artistic director for the Colorado Ballet Society in Colorado Springs, where she will trade dancing to her director’s repertoire of programs for designing programs and productions for dancers of her own.

Walsh Honea feels she’s leaving the company in great hands.

she said. “I knew in my heart and soul that the company is going to be fine without me.”

The Sarasota Ballet company is going through a time of change with much to look forward to as the 2021-22 season is set to begin in October.

Walsh Honea and a few other dancers have departed, leading a new class of performers to step up. Four dancers have been promoted while six others have joined the company outright. It’s something that excites Walsh Honea; she said a new crop of talent can bring a refreshing and new energy to a company.

As with any healthy arts organization, the ballet company has always been in a steady state of change. Founder Jean Weidner Goldstein remembers the company being much smaller at its inception in 1987.

At that time, visiting companies from neighboring cities and states put on performances at the Sarasota Opera House while Goldstein and staff auditioned dancers to stay on a permanent basis.

Eventually, Montreal choreographer Eddy Toussaint joined the group as artistic director and brought several of his dancers, effectively establishing the Sarasota Ballet.

Walsh Honea remembers performing choreographies made by the company’s second artistic director, Robert de Warren, who she felt taught her an important lesson in dancing to a director’s own choreography.

The Sarasota Ballet has had many performers come and go in its time, something Kate Walsh Honea feels adds to its growth.

When Director Iain Webb and Assistant Director Margaret Barbieri took the reins in the late 2000s, the company started performing a repertoire full of varied works typically seen in Europe.

“The level of choreography can never be in the beginning what you ultimately want it to be,” Goldstein said. “I’d almost accepted that perhaps we were where we should be, and it might never be what I had hoped for — until Iain walked through the door.”

It was that variety — with works

by Sir Frederick Ashton, George Balanchine and Sir Kenneth MacMillan, among others — that Walsh Honea felt improved her and other performers’ dancing.

Those productions challenged her to act more in her performances, adapt to three-act ballets and build her overall stamina.

“We weren’t just doing classical ballet. We were doing modern, contemporary, more theatrical works,” Walsh Honea said. “Having that variety of repertoire forces you to grow.”

Walsh Honea said the tide changed for the company in terms of reputation when it started traveling and performing tours with other companies. She said that a show at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., in 2013 — a performance of Sir Frederick Ashton’s “Les Patineurs” com-

plete with classical costumes and extravagant sets — helped audiences view her company with greater credibility. Dancers started auditioning for the company in larger numbers soon after.

“I just watched that exponential growth,” Goldstein said. “Day by day, I said, ‘My God, this is going to absolutely be what I had dreamed of.’”

The 2021 season, set to begin in October, will have in-person programming and audiences once more. After a hectic season with digital programs, Webb felt it appropriate to have a season of recognizable programs for Sarasota’s ballet lovers. It’s an introspective time for Webb as well:

This will be his 15th season with the company.

“I said it will take five years to change the company. We did it much quicker than that,” Webb said. “We’ve just been really lucky with the way that we’ve gone off, and we’ve flown the flag of Sarasota.”

Walsh Honea has seen dancers come and go in her time and said she feels particularly good about a group that has been with the company for three seasons now.

Lauren Ostrander, one of those dancers, was promoted to the coryphée position during the 2020-21 season and has been seeing more time on stage in more featured roles.

Ostrander, 26, is coming off last season’s swerve where the company danced in a digital season streamed to audiences. She said she and her fellow dancers can feel an excitement in the air at the chance of performing in front of an audience again. She’s excited to keep the momentum going into the new season and ready to see what she and her company can do next.

“I’m looking forward to those moments that you can’t quite capture or re-create on camera,” Ostrander said. “That’s the beauty of a live performance. …

I’m just thinking about how I can improve as a dancer this year and how I can grow.”
