Leader emerges in school board fundraising race In July, incumbent Sarasota County School Board candidate Caroline Zucker said she would need $50,000 in campaign contributions to win her race.

Since then, she has raised nearly $4,000 to bring her total monetary contributions up to $37,535. But Teresa Mast, Zucker’s opponent in the Aug. 30 election, collected more than $17,000 in July to top $50,000 in monetary and in-kind contributions.

Prominent donations in Mast’s last two rounds of financial disclosures include $1,000 from Neal Land Ventures, $1,000 from a political action committee associated with state Rep. Jim Boyd and $3,000 from prominent GOP donor Gary Kompothecras, founder of 1-800-ASKGary.

BBG, a Tallahassee-based PAC associated with State Sen. Nancy Detert, a future Sarasota County commissioner, also contributed $500 toward Mast’s campaign.

Zucker continues to draw support from the commercial building industry, with a $400 contribution from Jon F. Swift Construction and $500 from Sweet Sparkman Architects.

Fans of the annual block party Giving Hunger the Blues will notice some changes to the 20th annual event scheduled for Oct. 30 — most significantly, its new home at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

The city denied a request to close Hillview Street for the event this year because of the closure of the Osprey Avenue bridge. As a result, the event is relocating to the premises of the Van Wezel.

The new setup will include three stages and 20 musical acts scheduled to perform.

“That gives us continuous music on the lawn throughout the course of the day,” said event chairman Peter Anderson.

Last year, the event brought in an estimated 5,000 attendees, with proceeds benefiting Mayors Feed the Hungry and Women’s Resource Center of Sarasota County. Anderson said he hopes to grow the event at the Van Wezel next year, as well.

arron Schimberg is an architect by trade, but he was confident about investing in the property at 2101 Main St. based on process of elimination alone.

The 12,750-square-foot site is located east of U.S. 301, placing it in the heart of one of the few downtown-adjacent areas still struggling to redevelop postrecession.

Schimberg figured that couldn’t last long.

“We saw it as the last area in downtown Sarasota that has real potential,” he said.

He saw the construction activity in areas like Burns Court and the Rosemary District as a sign that demand existed for more walk-to-downtown developments. His firm, the Schimberg Group, purchased the land in December.

By May, the company announced it had secured a ground-floor tenant for its planned two-story commercial building: Sofrito Mama’s, an acclaimed Puerto Rican restaurant currently located near Tuttle Avenue and Fruitville Road.

Underscoring his belief in the area, Schimberg plans to move his firm’s office into the second floor.

He saw his plans as a potential catalyst. Located at East Avenue and Main Street, the property is almost in the direct center of the land east of U.S. 301 that carries a “downtown core” zoning designation from the city. He has had some preliminary conversations with nearby property owners, and he hopes to help create an identity for the area as other projects pop up.

At this point, though, no projects have actually broken ground.

As a result, it’s hard to pin down exactly what the area will look like in five years — or whether the revitalization that seems imminent and inevitable to Schimberg will even come to fruition.

“The goal, I would say, is to see a vision come through,” Schimberg said. “Whether it happens or not is to be seen.”

It seems unlikely that redevelopment will miss the area completely. Other builders have taken a similar interest in the area. In March 2015, Largo developer Icon Residential submitted initial plans for a 37-unit luxury townhome project at Main Street and School Avenue. Entrepreneur Harvey Vengroff is seeking city approval for a 393-unit affordable apartment complex near Fruitville Road and Audubon Place.

Last month, the city received proposals for two more projects east of downtown. JBCC Development, a firm led by developer Jim Bridges and commercial real estate broker Clint Conway, plans to build a Wawa gas station at Fruitville and Lime Avenue. Most recently, Oaktree Development filed plans for a 7,500-squarefoot retail complex at Fruitville

Five potential projects separated by about half a mile is a major injection of activity. Still, taken together, what bigger picture does it paint? Workforce housing and high-end four-bedroom townhomes, a buzzy restaurant and a gas station — this, alone, doesn’t create the vision for which Schimberg is striving.

PARALLEL GROWTH

Consider the Rosemary District: Efforts to revitalize and rebrand the neighborhood were largely unsuccessful until the city approved the Rosemary Residential Overlay District in 2014, allowing for higher-density residential projects. Within two years, more than 1,000 residential units were under construction in the area, almost instantly becoming one of the defining characteristics of the neighborhood.

The area east of downtown remains in that initial phase. People agree that the area should be developing. There’s just no way of knowing what the end result will be, even as initial investors prepare to begin construction.

Given a more barren canvas, those investors have less guidance. Michael Infanti, who manages Oaktree Development, said activity in other neighborhoods helped him decide what type of project to pursue.

ated the site for a residential project — maybe townhomes or multifamily,” Infanti said. “But then, looking at the inventories slated to go online in the next couple of years — particularly in Rosemary — I decided to go the retail route.”

At an Aug. 3 Development Review Committee meeting, city Senior Planner Courtney Mendez said she had already begun to receive feedback expressing concerns about how the proposed Wawa would mesh with the fabric of downtown. The city’s zoning standards for downtown are intended to help create a cohesive product even if developers are building in silos, and Infanti said city staff helped provide input on the type of project that would be well-suited for the area.

Neighboring property owners are well aware of the potential influx of activity, and both Schimberg and Infanti said those property owners are as eager for redevelopment as the new builders.

Schimberg already has a general idea of what he thinks the area should grow into. He sees the tree-lined streets, particularly on East Avenue, as a building block for a walkable, mixed-use district. He likens it to areas in San Francisco — nothing extravagant, necessarily, but a distinct neighborhood that features commercial offerings in addition to residential properties.

“It’s a pedestrian-friendly, multiuse, urban type of situation,” Schimberg said. “That is what it calls for, without a doubt.”

What does the area still need to fulfill its potential? The developers believe it’s too early to focus on specifics like that, but Infanti is confident that answers will present themselves when the time is right — and that investors will be eager to fill the voids.

“Eventually, the market will tell us what needs to be built, and someone will build it,” Infanti said.

In the Rosemary District, developers have begun working together to create a distinct identity for the neighborhood.

The group also hopes to address community needs, such as parking and a lack of park space. That process is taking place more than a decade after the city began focusing on the Rosemary District as a target for redevelopment.

On East Avenue, the hope is that revitalization won’t take that long. The necessary conversations have already begun among property owners, but until shovels hit the ground, it’s hard to know whether the spate of new projects will spark the creation of a cohesive neighborhood.

“We’re obviously interested in doing it,” Schimberg said.

“Whether we all get on board and do it is to be seen.”

City prepares paid parking price structure

Even among those who believe the city should institute a paid parking program, there is disagreement about how an ideal system would be structured.

On Tuesday, the city’s Parking Advisory Committee held its last meeting ahead of a City Commission discussion regarding the return of paid parking. Downtown merchants have already voiced opposition to a proposal to phase in parking meters next year, but the committee remains determined to present a plan for paid parking.

Led by Parking Manager Mark Lyons, the group used Tuesday’s meeting to discuss price points for the meters. Lyons proposed similar rates to the last time the city instituted paid parking. That would cost drivers 25 cents for 15 minutes, $1 for an hour and an additional $1 for any amount of time between one hour and two hours. The meters would run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Lyons proposed a system that would allow visitors to stay longer while also encouraging higher rates of turnover in metered spaces. For the third hour, drivers would pay an additional $2. For the fourth hour, the charge would be an additional $3, and so on.

evidence of the concept’s success before accepting the logic.

“I’m continuing to buy. I’m continuing to have food and drink,” Gallagher said. “Why am I paying more?”

Lyons intends to present multiple price models at a September City Commission meeting.

He said some of the questions regarding his initial proposal were valid and that he would be open to changes as long as the core principles behind the paid parking program remained intact.

“There still needs to be some incentive for people to realize sitting there all day isn’t what we’re looking for,” Lyons said.

On an island where big development is often met with big opposition, Mike Driscoll is proposing a development of a different variety — miniature.

Driscoll has expressed interest in using a 10,500-squarefoot parcel of land at 5160 Calle

Minorga to expand his regional mini golf operation to Siesta Key. He already operates one mini golf business in Lakewood Ranch and a sister course on Anna Maria Island. However, to add a third putt-putt course to his portfolio, Driscoll needs Sarasota County to rezone the property and secure a special exception to allow for outdoor entertainment.

He and his attorney, Robert Lincoln, met with Sarasota County’s Development Review Committee Aug. 4 to discuss preliminary plans. According to Lincoln, county staff is concerned rezoning the property would open the door for larger development in the future.

The county’s comprehensive plan prohibits developments that are more intense, meaning it would generate more use or traffic, than a property’s intended use on barrier islands.

As it is, the property is intended for office and professional use.

Though Lincoln does not believe a mini golf course would be any more intense than an office building, changing the parcel’s zoning classification to commercial general could create potential for future development that would.

“The biggest issue here is to figure out how to make everyone comfortable — that even if they are rezoning it, it won’t be used for a restaurant,” Lincoln said.

Driscoll has yet to formally submit plans to the county, but the prospect of a mini golf course on Siesta Key has some neighboring businesses excited.

“I imagine it would be good, because kids play putt-putt golf, and kids like ice cream,” Sub Zero Ice Cream and Yogurt manager Jaymie Jordan said. “It’s a natural pair.”

“I can’t think of any bad things about it, except maybe taking up more parking,” Jordan said.

Aside from zoning issues, Lincoln and Driscoll will also need to adjust the parking plan to address a shortage of 21 parking spaces.

The current plans include parking for 13 vehicles, as well as bicycle and motorcycle parking.

parking to 16 spaces, according to Siesta Key overlay district guidelines. However, the county mandates that mini golf courses provide two parking spaces per hole and an additional space per 250 square feet of floor area. Based on Driscoll’s plans, the 18-hole course would require 37 spots.

The Siesta Key Association board has not yet discussed the possible addition, but board member Joe Volpe said parking is among his initial concerns.

“Parking is a nightmare in the village area,” Volpe said.

Lincoln hopes to negotiate a plan that addresses county concerns and complete the rezoning process by spring 2017.

“The idea would be to provide a facility in the village that would complement the restaurants, shops and other touristy family activities,” Lincoln said.

Retailers on Bee Ridge ride out construction With construction slated to continue for another year, store owners along Bee Ridge say an FDOT project is taking a toll on business.

The Florida Department of Transportation said businesses would probably be inconvenienced when the $17 million Bee Ridge Road construction project began in January.

More than seven months later, several business owners in the Colonnade Shopping Center at 2300 Bee Ridge Road would agree.

The project spans nearly 4 miles of Bee Ridge Road from Siesta Drive to Bond Place. When complete, the roadway will look mostly the same, aside from 11 new pedestrian islands. For now, though, as crews navigate conflicting water lines to replace drainage pipes below the road, businesses in the Colonnade are operating behind a line of construction.

Though temporary signs mark entrances to businesses while the project is ongoing, merchants say the project has made it difficult for customers to access the

property.

Arlene Rhyne, owner of Sarasota Florist and Gifts, said after the construction began, she didn’t have walk-in customers for more than a month. Store manager Luke Sweeney said even deliveries are difficult with increased congestion along Bee Ridge Road.

“Our walk-ins are down,” Sweeney said. “We haven’t done anything to try to bring in more people because there’s been such inconsistent access.”

At least one merchant has attempted to find a way to overcome those issues. Owners of ABC Rentals Lynn and Bob Shaffer also saw a decrease in activity after construction began, although when clients stopped coming to their business, they brought their business to their clients.

They opened a self-serve satellite location on the corner of Avenida Messina and Avenida Navarra in Siesta Key Village.

“It’s really supporting itself,” Shaffer said, “which tells me people really don’t want to come

here.”

Not all retailers in the Colonnade are convinced the construction is keeping business slow. In fact, one business owner doesn’t feel his sales have suffered.

“We’re the only store of our kind, so people are going to come either way,” said Jeff Lewis, coowner of Total Tennis of Siesta Key. If anything, he thinks it’s the perception that traffic is bad along Bee Ridge Road that causes people to avoid the area.

“They’ve done a really nice job at keeping the traffic moving,” Lewis said.

According to FDOT spokesman Robin Stublen, the Bee Ridge Road project is a combination of three projects. FDOT intended to resurface the road and install pedestrian islands, but upon inspection, the agency found problems with the drainage pipes underneath the road.

Additional complications arose when FDOT excavated the roadway. The failing drainage pipes were either on top of or directly underneath Sarasota County water lines, prompting FDOT to collaborate with Sarasota County as FDOT contractors attempted to remove the drainage pipes

without damaging water lines.

“Keep in mind, some of the drainage pipes we are replacing are 6 feet in diameter,” Stublen said. “So it is a challenge.”

Some businesses in the Colonnade shopping center have complained about water service interruptions, but according to Sarasota County, it’s unclear if that’s directly related to the construction.

Though the project is not expected to conclude until summer 2017, Stublen believes the associated issues should subside as it continues.

“That is not to say there will not be times of inconvenience; there will. It is that it should become more bearable as the project pro-

ceeds,” Stublen said.

To date, FDOT has spent more than $4.5 million of its $17.1 million contract with Watson Civil Construction, which increased slightly due to the addition of a $16,000 business sign.

The project has also experienced 58 days of weather-related delays that added to the contract’s length.

Business owners along Bee Ridge will have to wait another year before the temporary blue signs are removed from their makeshift store entrances, and even the more tolerant merchants like Lewis are looking forward to an end to the construction.

“I’ll be glad when it’s over,” Lewis said.

Who’s in it for you?

Marco Rubio and Carlos Beruff share similar political philosophies about the role of government. The choice is one of character. Beruff, we believe, will put taxpayers first.

W

hen Manatee homebuilder Carlos Beruff entered the campaign for the Republican nomination to the U.S. Senate, he had a lot going against him — little or no name recognition statewide; a businessman … worse, a developer; a novice to political campaigns (as a candidate); and a raw, honest, tellit-like-it-is speaking style, which at times results in Beruff coming off in the media as cold and brusque (which he isn’t if you know him).

But at the time, none of the other Republicans in the race seeking to replace Sen. Marco Rubio had much of an edge, either. Why, can you even name any of them? How soon we forget.

But Beruff did have an advantage over most of his Republican opponents. He and Orlando entrepreneur Todd Wilcox, one of the former GOP Senate candidates, had earned the financial means to fund their primary campaigns. But Beruff’s advantage over Wilcox was that Beruff said, and has shown, that he is committed to self-funding however much is necessary to win the primary.

Beruff has had something else on his side: He was riding “the outsider,” “I’m-not-a-career-politician” wave with Donald Trump (until recently, anyway). In fact, Beruff’s campaign script appeared to mirror the same story line of Rick Scott’s 2010 campaign to win Florida’s gubernatorial election — i.e. persuade voters to shun career politicians in favor of a successful entrepreneur businessman who would take common-sense, conservative, business principles to Washington and get things done. No PC here.

Beruff and his advisers — and anyone else who watches Florida politics — knew the odds were long for Beruff, but as Scott proved, it could be done.

An unknown political underdog could win. Hey, to some extent, even Rubio showed that when he knocked out Charlie Crist.

But then Rubio — to little surprise — changed the script for Beruff and his other opponents. Rubio did what he vowed he would not do.

Beruff’s odds for victory suddenly became even more difficult — a lot more difficult. It’s safe to say Marco Rubio probably could carry the GOP primary election on name recognition alone. Plus, he has the Washington GOP establishment, led by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Senate PAC money behind him. Add to that, Red State, the conservative, political online publisher, reported recently a poll showing Rubio leading Beruff 62-12.

But hold on. It’s not as simple as that.

Let’s not forget that three months ago in the Florida presidential primary, Rubio won only one of the state’s 67 counties. What’s more, you can surmise there are factions among loyal Republicans that aren’t exactly embracing Rubio with group hugs — the Jeb Bush Republicans and the Rick Scott Republicans.

While Bush said he is supporting Rubio, that support clearly is tepid. You don’t see the former Florida governor traveling the state and campaigning on Rubio’s behalf.

The Bush Republicans are still smarting over Rubio entering the presidential race and upending Bush.

The Rick Scott Republicans are a mix of Tea Partyites and Trump supporters, the anti-career politician voters. Back in 2010, Rubio was a darling of the Tea Party Republicans, an eloquent, charismatic speaker on behalf of throwing out Obamacare and bringing Washington spending under control.

But it was obvious that after a year into his six-year term Rubio’s focus changed — from the Tea Party crusader to the Marco Rubio for president crusader.

While the polls may say Rubio is the clear front-runner in this race, there is ample Rubio backlash, especially after breaking his promise not to run for re-election.

During pre-election campaigns, we frequently have written that every election is a referendum on an incumbent’s performance. To be sure, this GOP Senate primary is a referendum on Rubio’s performance.

On the issues, Rubio, to his credit, maintained his Tea Party, smaller government, pro-liberty, reformentitlements positions. The freemarket Club for Growth gave Rubio a 98% rating, third-highest in the Senate, and the Washington-based Council for Citizens Against Government Waste ranked Rubio as a “Taxpayer Super Hero.”

In fact, if you put the political philosophies and principles of Rubio and Beruff side by side, there is little difference between the two. The core of their beliefs: individual freedom, pro-capitalism, get government out of our lives.

But if this GOP primary is a referendum on Rubio’s performance, it includes his behavior and character.

Early in his tenure, he established a political action committee that smelled of presidential aspirations.

He traveled the world and nation delivering spell-binding speeches. He flip-flopped on immigration, cam-

THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY SENATE RACE Regular readers of this page know that the Observers are philosophically disposed to political candidates who espouse individual liberty, laissez-faire capitalism, low taxes, low regulation and minimal government intervention.

Rarely is there a Democratic Party candidate who embraces this philosophy.

Which explains why we seldom, if ever, comment on candidates in Democratic Party primaries. What’s the point?

To wit: the Democratic U.S. Senate primary for Marco Rubio’s seat.

This is a contest between Democrats U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson of Orlando and U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy of the Treasure Coast (north of Palm Beach County).

If you’ve followed any of the reporting on this race, you know that personal issues are dogging both candidates — spousal abuse allegations against Grayson and resume embellishments against Murphy.

But here’s the clincher for why we could never recommend either candidate: their voting records.

The free-market Club for Growth scores Grayson with a lifetime record of 12% on pro-free enterprise, economic issues and Murphy with 11% (3% in 2015). The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste rate Grayson and Murphy both “hostile” to taxpayers.

These are not the representatives voters should send to Washington.

paigning in 2010 as a “never amnesty” Tea Partier, but then became one of the more visible members of the infamous “Gang of Eight,” embracing a “path to citizenship” (i.e. amnesty).

What’s more, Rubio became a political TV and radio talk-show personality.

You could see right through it — this was good for his aspirations. When it was clear what he wanted, Rubio’s attendance record was among the worst in the Senate. He became the career Washington politician whose focus was on himself and his future first — a characteristic that has been consistent throughout his political career in Florida.

And this is exactly what Beruff’s campaign is about: Which of the two will put America and its voters first?

Which of the two candidates can you trust to put America’s interests ahead of his own? Whom can you believe will do what he says?

Past is prologue.

One advantage we have had over most Florida voters is that we have seen and recorded Beruff’s 32-year business career — an entrepreneur who built his Medallion Home company from nothing to $44 million a year in revenues and 75 employees; and who managed through five Florida housing recessions — a testament of will, perseverance and leadership, a challenge that is far more difficult than making speeches and casting votes on legislation. Those who have signed their employees’ paychecks and who personally carry the financial risks of their businesses know that a company does not stay in business for three decades if its leader is an unethical cheat and liar. Staying power and success require integrity and trust.

What’s more, Beruff has a record as a gubernatorial appointee to three public boards — the SarasotaBradenton International Airport, the State College of Florida and the Southwest Florida Water Management District. On each of these boards, Beruff’s fellow board members chose him to serve as chairman — votes of confidence. And on each, Beruff established a record as a tough, steadfast steward of taxpayers’ money, often at the criticism of entrenched bureaucracies.

As Frederick Piccolo, CEO of the airport authority, told our sister paper, the Business Observer: “[Beruff] is old school. His word is his bond. He always challenged the status quo. He asked questions, and it was always nonconfrontational. He expected: ‘Have you done the best you can do?’ And he believed you can always do things more efficiently. He always kept reminding us: ‘This is some taxpayer’s money.’”

While most of the media and much of the electorate focus on the importance of the presidential race, the truth is the trajectory of our national government — which currently is more and more in debt and reaching deeper into our daily lives — is not going to change until voters send the right people to Congress. Congress is the branch of government that makes our laws.

For Florida Republicans, this is an opportunity to make that choice.

In this case, at this moment in our nation’s journey, we’ll take an ethical, successful entrepreneur who promises to put America first over a career politician who put himself first.

LIGHTS OUT 7:44 a.m. — 2100 block of Main Street Property Damage: A man noticed a light pole had been knocked down outside his office building. An officer could not determine what caused the damage, but he took photos of the pole and notified the city of the incident.

SPAT TIRE 2:55 p.m. — 1600 block of 12th Street Misc. Officer: A man saw an unknown male get out of a car and dump two tires into the bushes at the edge of his property line. The man confronted the driver, who then drove away from the area. The man said the driver had done that in the past and that he filed a similar report in 2014.

SWERVE 1:20 a.m. — 1200 block of South Tamiami Trail Suspicion: A driver asked to meet with an officer to report a reckless driver of a tractor trailer that was hauling cars. The driver followed the vehicle and said the other driver was weaving back and forth, unable to maintain his or her lane. An officer followed the vehicle south to the county line and did not observe any erratic or unsafe driving.

The main banquet hall at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is undergoing renovations and will be renamed Michael’s On the Bay at Selby Gardens.

The venue hosts events such as the annual Mother’s Day brunch and Wine, Dine & Pine, as well as numerous private functions and weddings throughout the year.

The 4,800-square-foot venue will take advantage of the bayfront views from the property.

“We could not be more excited about the plans Phil Mancini and Michael Klauber have put forth,” said Jennifer Rominiecki, president and CEO of Selby Gardens.

“The transformation will complete a versatile set of indoor and outdoor event spaces, solidifying Selby Gardens as the premier waterfront event and dining destination in the region.”

This marks the latest in the partnership between Selby Gardens and Michael’s On East, which became the exclusive food service partner in December and provides event catering on the property and operates the cafe in

Renovations include a new catering kitchen to accommodate 350 guests.

“Our multifaceted and awardwinning large-scale operation is uniquely positioned to reinvigorate the Gardens’ event operations and taking it to new heights,” Klauber said in a release. “Philip and I have been dreaming about developing a unique waterfront venue in downtown Sarasota for years and can’t imagine a more perfect partner than Selby Gardens.”

The venue is currently closed for the renovations, which are scheduled to be complete by Oct. 1.

NAKED TRUTH 2:55 a.m. — 800 block of South Tamiami Trail Ordinance Violation: A clerk at a hotel reported that a man was skinny dipping in the pool. The clerk said other guests attempted to confront the man, and he yelled back at them. The man was also a guest at the hotel, and the clerk asked an officer to tell the man he would be evicted following any other disturbances. The officer made contact with the man, who apologized for the incident and said he would not cause any more trouble.

What do you see as the top three issues the board will have to address in the next term?

For sure the budget. With that will come Common Core issues and curriculum issues, and for me, a huge issue will be transparency because I believe that all school board business should be extremely 100% transparent.

What should the district’s priorities be when looking for a new superintendent?

First of all, I would like to have the opportunity to have a say in it, and I don’t think I will even get that opportunity. Any time you have new board members coming on, the relationship is imperative between who the new superintendent will be and who your school board is. You want it to be a good marriage...I would

like them to slow down the process...

We have a very unique culture in Sarasota County, and he or she needs to understand that we have good schools, but I want them to be the best of the best schools. I believe there needs to be a place for every child no matter what the circumstances are. So we need to have a superintendent who comes in and has great vision and understands the culture here and is willing to work within the community.

There is a growing frustration with not only Common Core, but the amount of testing that is being done, the amount of time that’s taken away from instructional time... For me, capturing that local control allows us to put it back in the hands of the teachers...We have phenomenal teachers. Let them teach.

How has the money involved in the school board race influenced the election?

When it comes to dollars, I think there is a huge difference in how those dollars have gone about being raised. I have been criticized on many occasions that mine all came from big developers, but if you look at my opponent, she actually has more from those who benefit from capital improvement projects than I do...As far as how we go about doing it and how we are using it, Sarasota County is a very large area to cover, and to get people very aware of your platform, it takes a significant budget.

How should the district navigate a period of growth with continuing budgetary restraints?

The first thing is I believe we should have zero budgeting.

Zero budgeting is just literally saying that if our budget is a $740 million or $760 million budget, we should be able to make it in those dollars...I do think it’s adequate. We just need to be very accountable for it.

We’re second highest in the state for what we spend per student, and there are many other municipalities that are doing much more with much less, so I think it’s good to have a look at it and see.

The biggest thing is to have good foresight when it comes to having reserves...

Do you think the school board has become more politicized?

In a perfect world it’s supposed to be a nonpartisan race, which I don’t think it is. I wish it was.

It best serves our community if it’s a nonpartisan race... So to answer your question, I think it’s always been political. I think it always will be political.

You and your opponent are both fighting for local control of education — why is this such an important issue?

Would you consider revisiting the current impact fee system?

I’m for very measurable impact fees because it is a significant revenue generator for the schools in order to be able to afford the capital improvement projects that we have. Currently, it’s at 26%, and I think that’s a pretty fair amount for what we use it for, for what we are going to need to use it for. I do think it’s something that needs to be visited. How often? I’m not sure about that, but when we do visit it, staff needs to be providing us with very current data and stats.

Why should voters replace a long-serving school board member?

I think it’s pretty apparent this entire country is looking for new perspective, and I think it’s time, here locally, to do the same thing. I bring an incredible amount of experience when it comes to community engagement and working within my community. I’m not only a product of the school system, but so are my kids, so is my husband. I bring much more of a perspective of the entire community than someone who has been really ingrained in the system, and I do mean ingrained in the system, for nearly two decades.

Sarasota County School Board, District 2 already down 100 teachers we need to hire. Number two is the challenge of low socioeconomic students — getting them to read on grade level and starting before kindergarten to get to that level.

The third challenge will be the budget. Right now, this is the first year in about five years now that we actually have a balanced budget.

Why do you want to serve on the school board for another term?

One of the main reasons is we are hiring a new superintendent, and I want to be a part of that decision making, because I’ve been involved in the schools. I know the school community, I know our community, I’ve been involved in all areas of it.

More than that, our deputy CFO is also retiring. That leaves a vacuum of knowledge leaving this district. I have that knowledge – with 17 years on the school board, on and off — of what we’ve done before and what we’re doing now and where we’re hoping to go in the future.

What do you see as the top three issues the board will have to address in the next term?

Teacher shortages, number one.

How do you balance managing the budget and improving the district?

All of the foundations in Sarasota have been working with us, which is allowing us to bring in extra grant money, extra funding to help us balance this budget to get through. I’m hoping that our legislators wake up to the fact that education should be the key priority. It is the future of our country. If we don’t pay attention to our education system, what does our future hold for us? That’s one of the reasons I got involved with this in the first place, because I recognized that.

I’ve been asked to go to Tallahassee, asked to run for the House.

I have no desire to do that. This here — education of our students — is key to the progress of our country. That’s why I’m here.

What should the district’s priorities be when looking for a new superintendent?

Someone with integrity and fantastic communication skills.

A knowledge of education — and if possible, a knowledge of the funding formula in Florida.

Do you think fundraising has shifted the focus of the race?

My vote on impact fees impacted me. I had two reports in front of me, and both of them I felt were not accurate. I could see the growth that we’re having in our community as I drive around — no matter where you go, there’s growth. I knew that we needed impact fees. I tried to think if I could delay them for two years as was being suggested, but in recognizing the growth we have and how long it’s going to take us to be able to gather any funds at all in order to purchase the land that we need to build new schools, I had to vote for impact fees — at the lowest percentage I could. That impacted me, because some people got angry with me for my vote. I can tell you I lost $5,000 right off the bat, and I lost the support of some people. But I did the right thing.

Would you consider adjusting impact fees from the current level?

Right now, I’m fine where it is.

That’s not to say if staff came to us and proved their case — that we are having more children moving into this district — that I would not be open to change it.

But as of right now, I don’t see that happening.

Why should voters see your experience as an asset?

Why would you fire someone who is doing a good job — who has an “A”-rated school district

for the past 10 years? Who has increased student graduation rates; who has, for the low socioeconomic students, reduced the achievement block between the haves and the have-nots? We have plans in place to work even harder through summer schools now, so our kids won’t lose anything during the summer.

There are a lot of plans I’ve put into place with the board that are reasons for me to stay.

What is the biggest change in your role on the board now versus when you first started?

The difference is I know what I’m doing now. This is not an easy job; everybody thinks it is, but it’s not an easy job. To learn the budget, I went to school. I went back to college and took a year course at USF in governmental budgeting in order to understand what it was I was doing. You just don’t walk in here and open up the budget and understand what it is and how to maneuver it and what each one of the components means.

I go to every school, I visit the principals, I talk to them. I know what the priorities are here. I live here; I’ve lived here. I have kids in this school system. I’m proven, experienced and committed to this district and to the students of Sarasota County.

early 25 years ago, Rob Million played baseball for the Sarasota Babe Ruth League.

He had his share of big-time hits and stellar defensive plays but never reached the sport’s echelon: the World Series.

Million, now 38, has managed Sarasota Babe Ruth AllStar teams for the last 15 years.

It took him 12 years to reach his first World Series, as an assistant coach.

Now, for the third straight season, Million will coach a team in the World Series — this time, it will be Sarasota’s 14U All-Stars, which will compete against champions from 12 regions in the Babe Ruth League World Series Aug. 11-18, in Westfield, Mass.

Sarasota’s 13U All-Stars also captured the Southeast Regional Championship July 30 to earn a berth in the World Series. The 13U tournament will be held the same week in Ottumwa, Iowa.

It’s the first time the Sarasota 13U All-Stars have advanced to the World Series since its 1988 victory.

“It’s a lifetime memory to go to the World Series,” Gabe Copeland, 14, said. “We take pride in it.

We want to represent this city and state.”

Million, who coached last year’s 15U team to a third-place finish, and 13U manager Rick Held are both coaching their respective teams for the first time.

It wasn’t until the Southeast Regional Tournament that Million realized just how good of a team he had.

“When we went in and bulldozed the tournaments — that’s when I knew we were really special,” Million said.

Both the 13U and 14U teams have the mechanics necessary to get the job done on the field. It’s just a matter of whether the players can put all three components — pitching, hitting and defense — together when it counts.

and scoring runs at ease, the 13U team, which is batting over 0.500 collectively, has seen its share of ups and downs, including losing the first game of the Southeast Regional Tournament.

“They hadn’t really been tested up to that point,” Held said. “They

realized they had to put the work in to get the wins.”

Players learned to rely on one another.

“Whenever you get on base, you know the person behind you is going to get a hit or do something to help,” first baseman Jacob Danowski, 13, said.

Players for both teams are hoping their experience growing within the sport together for the past five years will carry them throughout the tournament.

“I know we’ve all accomplished a lot of things to get better,” shortstop Nick Henry, 14, said. “I’m also looking forward to spending more time together with these guys because we’re all going to be at different high schools this year playing against each other.”

For both teams, just reaching the World Series in the same season is a feat in itself.

“We plan to be there the last day,” Held said. “If we’re going all the way to Iowa, we might as well bring back a trophy.”

EVO Athletics tumbles toward success

raxton Marien, 6, bounced around on the trampoline, completing a series of seat drops and basic jumps with apparent ease.

With his warmup behind him, the Tatum Ridge Elementary first-grader bounced up and down, gaining momentum with every jump before flipping his way into a colorful sea of black, royal blue and neon green foam blocks.

Braxton struggled to make his way out of the foam pit before racing back onto the trampoline to practice his new skill set all over again.

Around him, gymnasts of all ages flipped, tumbled and swung their way through a series of apparatuses, each one drawing even more excitement than the last, as seasoned veterans and newcomers alike celebrated the grand opening of EVO Athletics Aug. 6 — three days before the U.S. women’s gymnastics team captured the gold medal in Rio. The event capped off a yearlong process for owners Kyle and Lydia Lawton, Vice President and Chief Athletics Officer Jason Collins and Jay Thorton, a twotime NCAA gymnastics champion and the second alternate for the 1996 U.S. Olympics team.

A former hockey player from Vermont, Kyle Lawton never envisioned he would one day own a gymnastics facility. But that was before he had his two children, Ellie, 11, and Kody, 9,

and met Collins, who had been widely recognized in the area for coaching top-tier male gymnasts.

“We have the best boys in the state here,” Lawton said. “Jason is killing it out here. Now I see the value and what boys can do in the gym. These kids are fit.”

Over the past year, the Lawtons, Collins and Thorton have been working to create a gymnastics and cheerleading facility focused on providing athletes with the necessary equipment to help them thrive in their sport safely.

In addition to standard recre-

ational gymnastics equipment, Collins and Thorton designed a section of the gym specifically for elite level gymnasts and Olympic hopefuls. EVO Athletics, located at 7188 E. 15th St., Unit 2, Sarasota, has Olympiclevel equipment, with the gym based around NCAA and international matting systems.

“We wanted to make it fun for the kids and enjoyable for them,” Thornton said. “We paid attention to all of the details.

We wanted to do it right, and I think we accomplished that in every aspect of this gym. I never trained in a gym this nice.”

Throughout the grand opening, EVO Athletics gymnasts and cheerleaders and the community as a whole had the chance to see all the facility had to offer from stunting to uneven bars and rings to a small scale Ninja Warrior course.

“There’s lots of area to work,” 13-year-old Kelsey Stuart said.

“It’s not all in one area, so you get more work in and it makes you work harder.”

In the coming months, EVO Athletics plans to unveil its Ninja Warrior cross-training programming, featuring an array of obstacles and exercises, includ-

ing warped walls, burpee ropes, a cargo tube net and an unstable bridge, among others.

EVO Athletics also plans to start an after-school program, which will provide students an opportunity to complete their homework before participating in an activity of their choice such as dance, singing, arts or flying.

t’s just like your yoga class.

There’s mood music. The lights are dimmed. Kittens are at play in the corner.

Wait — maybe the Namastray yoga class at Cat Depot is different.

The class started out last fall, but was discontinued after just a handful of sessions.

Now, it’s back by popular demand. After its cancellation, fans of the class began asking if it would start up again, which led to a trial period, according to Cat Depot volunteer and Education Manager Joe Landmichl.

During the first class this time around, held Aug. 4, a group of six participants experienced what it was like to have a cat frolicking nearby while doing downward dog.

An adult cat named Loverboy infused joy into the class by nuzzling up to participants like Marcia Morris.

Morris has one cat named Cruiser at home, but she enjoyed getting to know Loverboy. She’s attended previous Namastray classes.

“I was so excited when I saw this was on again,” Morris said.

Pokemon continues to lure players to St. Armands Circle.

“What I enjoy is the stretching and poses.”

The class is structured to provide fitness for participants and also to expose the cats to people outside of their pods.

Instructor Veronika Schachtner first got involved as a student in the class when it was offered last November. After she became a certified instructor in March, she offered to teach the class for free.

“When I took the class there were three kittens in the room,” Schachtner said. “I was in a pose, and I just burst out in laughter at them playing together.”

After her first experience, Schachtner wanted her method of teaching to infuse the class with joy from the watching the cats.

The class size is limited to 14 per class due to space and safety considerations for the felines at play.

The intimate class size also allows participants to play with cats before, during and after the class without overwhelming them.

Participants Christine and Steven Windsor already have four cats at home, but before class, they couldn’t help but play with kittens Ari and Ori. Landmichl hopes the class exposes participants to some of the 159 cats that reside at Cat Depot and need a home.

“By getting into a new space it prepares them for a new home,” Landmichl said. “That’s always the reason we do events, it exposes people to the cats and their true personalities.”

Nearby, Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate broker associate Roger Pettingell used the app to his advantage when he dropped lures in an open house on Bird Key and advertised the listing as

a PokeStop.

“We got a buzz,” he said. “We wanted to jump on it while it was still current.”

For now, the app is still creating a buzz around the Circle.

“It’s the biggest thing going right now,” Rubinstein said.

It was a few weeks ago that Gigi’s Cupcakes owner Dorrie Rubinstein first saw a teenager walk into her store and begin battling in a Pokemon Go “gym.”

Rubinstein says she has seen a 20% increase in revenue since the gym — in Poke-speak, that’s a place where players can battle — popped up a few weeks ago.

The Pokemon Go app, created

by Ingress, allows users to catch Pokemon characters that appear.

Pokemon Go is based on location, so users actually have to be in close proximity to a Pokemon to catch it.

Gigi’s Cupcakes and the Neptune statue are home to the only gyms on St. Armands Circle, but multiple businesses, including Daiquiri Deck, FantaSea and the Met, are home to PokeStops, which are blue portals that match a landmark.

Recently, Rubinstein began catering to Pokemon fans with Pikachu and PokeBall cupcakes.

“I saw the people coming in, and I already knew they were fans of the game, so I thought why not make the cupcakes?” Rubinstein said.

Rubinstein is even thinking about buying lures, which attract Pokemon to a location, to bring more people near the shop.

But Daiquiri Deck service manager Brett Rose calls being a PokeStop a double-edged sword.

Some people drive by and slow down in front of the restaurant to catch Pokemon. Staff has also seen as many as six people sharing a single smoothie while they play the game. Some customers have even gone so far as to try to climb behind daiquiri machines to catch Pokemon.

The seahorse outside of FantaSea is a PokeStop. FantaSea social media specialist Madeline Kinney thinks the game is bringing more traffic to the Circle.

While Kinney didn’t have specific numbers for FantaSea sales, Kinney said the PokeStop is causing people to stop in the store.

he Glendridge member Nancy Brisky made sure to stay up late Tuesday night to watch Team USA earn gold medals in swimming and gymnastics.

“I’m not getting to bed until 1 a.m. these nights,” Brisky said.

She’s been closely watching the games; her favorites are the tennis and equestrian events.

Now, Brisky can also call herself an Olympic champion — in The Glenridge Senior Olympics, that is. She placed first overall for the beanbag toss Aug. 8.

Fitness Center Manager Andre LeClair coordinated a week of games and activities for residents inspired by the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“We have a series of events that were designed so you can compete without having a lot of physical prowess,” LeClair said.

The events kicked off with an opening ceremony complete with an Olympic torch walk/run Aug. 5.

Edward Feldman had the honor of lighting the torch as other members carried Olympic rings around the property.

Events include “trashketball,” a beanbag toss, health and Olympic trivia, a tennis shot contest, darts and mini golf.

In lieu of gold and silver medals, first- and second-place winners will receive one-hour or half-hour message sessions, respectively, at the fitness center.

Third-place winners will score a free meal instead of a bronze medal.

On Aug. 10, members signed up for a remote-control car race. Competitors had two laps to complete, with obstacles like ramps, speed bumps and a curtain of chains.

“This activity tests cognition,” LeClair said. “They’re having to work their left and right thumbs at the same time to steer the car.”

A two-home sale in Sapphire Shores tops all transactions in this week’s real estate. Samuel Zussman and Nichole Antonelli-Zussman, of London, sold two homes at 4948 Bay Shore Road to Michael and Susan McCarty, of Sarasota, for $1,825,000. The first was built in 2008; it has three bedrooms, three-and-a-half baths, a pool and 3,333 square feet of living area.
