If you’ve seen art projects and displays at Sarasota and Manatee county schools lately, there’s a reason for it.

Twenty-five teachers recently completed a yearlong education initiative with the Embracing Our Differences nonprofit in an effort to promote diversity and inclusion.

In one example, Sarasota Middle School art teacher Brooks Tracey provided 80 students and faculty members at his school with wood panels to create an artistic design representing an Embracing Our Differences quote.

They are now on display at the school.

One last performance

The Pine View School band had to put its live performances on pause because of the pandemic, but its students were thrilled to end the year with a show May 25.

Twenty-four graduating seniors were recognized for their commitment to the band program. Meagan Michalik and Noah Kunkel of the wind ensemble received the John Philip Sousa Award for achievement and interest in instrumental music.

Developers plot downtown projects Plans for a seven-story residential building in Burns Court and a 10-story mixeduse complex east of U.S. 301 are working through the city’s review system.

A

public parking lot in Burns Court could become the site of a seven-story, 160-unit assisted living facility.

On Thursday, representatives for Northfield, Illinois-based Integrated Development II will host a virtual community workshop to discuss the company’s plans for the 1.85-acre site at 307 N. Orange Ave. The developer filed preliminary applications in May for a project on the site, described as a “luxury senior living community.”

According to information submitted to the city, the project would include 104 assisted living units, 31 independent living units, 20 memory care living units and up to five guest suites. The application states up to 500 square feet of space on the ground floor may be used for nonresidential purposes, such as a coffee shop open to the public.

Because the property is within the boundaries of the Laurel Park overlay district, the developer is required to hold two community workshops on the proposal: one before filing a site plan and one afterwards. Ahead of Thursday’s initial workshop, the Laurel Park Neighborhood Association sent an email to its members identifying some topics of interest pertaining to the development proposal.

In the email, neighborhood association leadership identified traffic and mechanical noise as two key issues it wanted to see the developer address in the site plan. The email calls for a traffic circulation plan that prohibits traffic associated with the site from cutting through Laurel Park.

The neighborhood is also asking the developer to take steps to mitigate noise associated with mechanical systems on the property, an issue Laurel Park residents said they experienced with the nearby Kanaya condominium building. Finally, the email requests that construction staging does not negatively affect

narrow neighborhood streets bordering the site.

Matthew Arcari, the president of the Laurel Park Neighborhood Association, said developments on the border of the neighborhood and more intense downtown zoning districts invite more careful consideration of compatibility between a project and its surroundings. Still, he said the neighborhood has a track record of working effectively with developers, and he saw the upcoming workshop as a useful platform for discussing the proposed Orange Avenue project.

The city is a leaseholder for a portion of the property, used as the 63-space Burns Square parking lot. City spokesperson Jason Bartolone said the city leases the site on a month-to-month basis, and the agreement could be terminated should the proposed development move forward.

The potential loss of the parking lot has drawn pushback from

Burns Court merchants and Laurel Park residents in the past. In 2013, when the city temporarily allowed its lease to expire, nearby businesses called the parking lot a vital resource for customers and workers. In 2014, members of the Laurel Park Neighborhood Association unsuccessfully lobbied the city to purchase the land, expressing concern that losing the lot could lead to increased parking on nearby residential streets.

The property has been targeted for development by multiple builders during the past two decades, though previous plans have fallen through. In 2006, the city approved a site plan for a residential building up to 15 stories tall, but that application expired in 2014. In 2018, the Laurel Park Neighborhood Association had discussions with a prospective developer who intended to build two 10-story towers on the land with a mix of residential and office space.

In addition to concerns about traffic and noise, Laurel Park residents have previously asked questions about how height would affect the compatibility of any project on the Orange Avenue property. The land, zoned downtown core, allows for a maximum height of 10 stories. In 2018, residents encouraged a prospective developer to create a step-down from Orange Avenue to the eastern end of the property closest to the neighborhood.

MAIN STREET REDEVELOPMENT

On the east end of downtown, a developer intends to replace a single-story building with a 10-story mixed-use project called MainView of Sarasota.

On May 11, Dover, Delawarebased Development & Growth LLC filed preliminary plans for a building with 36 condominium units and 10,000 square feet of retail space. The application states the project will feature commercial space on the ground floor, 90 parking spaces on the second and third stories, and residences on the top seven levels.

“The project will focus on providing pedestrian urban design as well as sustainability by providing vertical garden spaces, rooftop terraces and currently exploring [green building] certification,” Development & Growth President Deividas Gizys wrote in the application.

Ahead of a pre-application meeting with the city’s Development Review Committee, city staff noted the project team would need to share more detailed plans before officials could judge whether the proposal is in line with applicable regulations.

Development Review Planner Amy Pintus noted that the city code requires habitable space along Main Street on the first two stories of the building, which could conflict with the outlined intent to provide parking on the second level.

Pintus said it was difficult to evaluate the project based on the initial information shared with the city.

“The scale given on the plans is not accurate,” Pintus wrote in the memo. “Compliance with city regulations cannot be accurately assessed without either dimensions or an accurate scale.”

Gizys declined to comment on the plans for the Main Street property.

MainView of Sarasota is the latest in a series of developments planned for downtown’s eastern wing. In late 2020, demolition began at the Main Plaza site in the 1900 block of Main Street, clearing room for two 10-story residential buildings planned for the site. The Main Plaza project will include 418 residential units and 50,700 square feet of commercial space.

An Orange Avenue property long targeted for redevelopment is slated to become a senior living center — which would result in the loss of more than 60 public parking spaces.

ddressing a crowd of dozens at Lido Beach last week, about 100 yards from the Gulf of Mexico, City Manager Marlon Brown made clear the degree to which a recently completed sand-dredging project had reshaped the barrier island’s shores.

“Where you sit today, you’d be sitting in water,” Brown said of the beach

before the project.

Brown was speaking at the city’s Lido Beach Renourishment Celebration, held to commemorate the completion of a shoreline protection initiative that dates back to the 1990s. The city teamed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to replenish Lido Beach with sand taken from Big Pass, which had not been dredged before.

The renourishment added nearly 700,000 cubic yards of sand to a 1.56-mile segment of the barrier island, widening the beach by an average of 300 feet, the city said. The project also included the construction of two sand-retaining groins.

“It took us a little while to get here, but it’s certainly worth it,” City Engineer Alex DavisShaw said.

Florida’s Department of Health is closing its COVID-19 vaccination site at Sarasota Square Mall this month, redirecting those still in need of a vaccine to a pair of DOH clinics.

June 24 will be the final day of vaccines at the shopping mall.

Beginning Friday, June 25, DOH Sarasota will conduct vaccinations in downtown Sarasota and in North Port.

Downtown group balks at trolley funding request As the city plots a multimillion-dollar transit route linking the mainland and barrier islands, downtown property owners are skeptical it will benefit them.

This fall, the city intends to launch an open-air trolley service running from downtown to Lido Key, but key details — including funding sources — have not yet been finalized.

City Manager Marlon Brown appeared at Tuesday’s Downtown Improvement District meeting as part of an effort to secure financial support for the trolley. Brown asked the self-taxing group of downtown property owners to commit $450,000 over the next three years toward the public transit service, pitching the initiative as an economic development tool for the areas along the planned route.

“To really make it a robust, successful program, we need all the support that we can get from our business community,” Brown said.

Brown’s proposal drew a cool reaction from a majority of the DID board members, who expressed skepticism about the trolley’s benefits. To secure the funds Brown is seeking, DID board member Wayne Ruben said the city would have to overcome concerns from stakeholders in the heart of the city.

“Will they take our business and diners and customers to St. Armands?” Ruben said. “Does

it diminish downtown? I think that’s a nagging question they’re going to face.”

In April, the City Commission voted unanimously to put out a request for proposals in search of a transportation company interested in operating the trolley service. The program would be funded in part by a $1.5 million grant from the Florida Department of Transportation, but the most robust scope of service under consideration could carry hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional expenses for the city, according to staff projections.

The most expansive route the city examined would run from Main Street and School Avenue through St. Armands Circle to Ted Sperling Park at South Lido Beach.

The city intends to request $300,000 from the self-taxing St. Armands Business Improvement District. Brown said the smaller ask for that group was due to the BID having a smaller tax base.

Brown argued that the benefits wouldn’t be unidirectional in favor of St. Armands. He said the city would encourage visitors to park at downtown garages before heading to the barrier islands via the trolley, which could lead to beachgoers patronizing downtown businesses.

“Is this project good for Sarasota? I say 100%, it’s good for

Sarasota,” DID board member Ron Soto said. “Is it good for the downtown core, the DID? I think it’s going to take away from us.”

DID board member Mark Kauffman pointed to the limited boundaries of the taxing district as another reason to question the prospect of funding the trolley service. Kauffman said the group prefers to focus on projects within the district itself.

“How do we respond to the DID people who say I’m paying tax dollars — $450,000 over three years — and the guy on the next block is paying nothing for it?”

Kauffman said.

Although all five DID board

members expressed either hesitance or opposition to the city’s funding request, the group did not rule out contributing to the trolley program. Ruben asked whether the DID could approve one year of funding and decide whether to renew its commitment in the future. Brown said the city would welcome whatever support the group was willing to provide.

“I think we need to be a team player and partner with the city in whatever fashion we can,” Ruben said.

After the meeting, Brown said he remained optimistic about partnering with the DID, but the trolley project doesn’t hinge on the group’s participation. The city is still awaiting the conclusion of its search for an operating partner, at which point officials will have more information about the cost — and the corresponding funding needs. In addition to support from the DID and BID, Brown said staff will propose using some of the city’s economic development fund for the program.

Some key details of the trolley service, such as the hours of operation and the exact route, could be subject to change depending on funding availability, Brown said. Despite the lack of a finalized plan, Brown said he believed the trolley would ultimately be an energizing tool for downtown, St. Armands and the city as a whole.

“I think this will be exciting for our community,” Brown said.

“I think it’s successfully working over on Siesta Key, and we hope to replicate something similar.”

The city’s five-year capital improvement plan has no money for a major renovation project on Main Street that would eliminate dozens of parking spaces to widen sidewalks, but officials want to be ready should funding become available.

A potential Main Street makeover was a central point of discussion during a May 27 City Commission meeting held to discuss the fiscal year 2022 budget.

Before the commission’s review of the proposed capital improvement plan, several downtown merchants spoke in opposition to any project that would cause an extended street closure and result in fewer on-street parking spaces.

The business owners were responding specifically to a concept design the Downtown Improvement District commissioned this year. The plans focus on the 1400 and 1500 blocks of Main Street, replicating the look of the brick-lined Lemon Avenue

mall. To accommodate wider sidewalks, the design would replace angled parking with parallel parking, reducing the number of spaces from 98 to 23.

The design drew praise from property owners and city planning staff, but store and restaurant operators have expressed concern that construction and fewer on-street parking spots would significantly hurt businesses on those two blocks.

“We can’t afford to lose one more penny,” said Chip Beeman, owner of Pastry Art. “Don’t even think about this.”

Despite city officials’ interest in the project, staff said the project is not in a position to move forward without an infusion of funds.

The potential removal of angled parking has drawn objections from some Main Street merchants, though property owners and city staff members have spoken positively about the potential to create wider sidewalks.

McGue said the majority of that money is dedicated to renovating the 1900 block of Main Street.

Commissioner Erik Arroyo said he was under the impression it could take close to a decade before the city had money available to undertake major streetscape work west of Orange Avenue.

McGue affirmed that no funds for construction were included in the five-year work plan and that staff initially envisioned a longer time frame for implementing its desired Main Street changes.

“There is definitely not enough money to construct the concept plan that has been proposed by the Downtown Improvement District in the next couple of years,” McGue said.

There is a scenario in which the project could move forward more quickly, though. City Manager Marlon Brown said the city was preparing for the possibil-

ity a federal infrastructure bill would create an infusion of cash for local projects. If that occurs, Brown said the city wanted to have a design for the 1400 and 1500 projects to ensure any project was positioned to capitalize on the potential availability of those funds.

Even if that occurs, Brown said the city would undertake a thorough public review process.

“We’ll have to extensively go through community meetings, and the commission will decide whether indeed we want to pursue that project,” Brown said.

“But we want to be shovel-ready in the event the money does become available.”

Already, some commissioners are staking out perspectives on the concept. Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch expressed a desire to preserve the parking supply.

s the number of electric cars increases in Florida and nationwide, states and the federal government soon will face another financial dilemma: what to do about declining gas-tax revenue.

In Florida, the average total state gas tax rate is 36.7 cents a gallon. That generates about $4 billion a year to pay for Florida’s roads.

But as vehicles get more fuel efficient and more consumers switch to electric cars, we will pay less in fuel taxes for using the same amount of roads.

Combining data from the Energy Information Administration and Bloomberg, Florida would need to raise the gas tax to 75.6 cents a gallon by 2050 just to keep revenue even.

But a new revenue scheme is gaining traction: mileage-based user fees, sometimes called a road-user charge. This is the concept of charging road users based on distance traveled rather than the per-gallon gas tax.

MAJOR ADVANTAGES

Here are five major advantages to user fees: n Fairness. Ensures that those who pay the user fees are the ones who receive the benefits. n Choice. Provides users more control of what, when and how often they pay. n Flexibility. Allows transportation departments the ability to adjust revenues and expenditures, as the economy, demand and technology change. n Better incentives. Creates incentives for drivers and transportation departments to think seriously about the efficiency, quality and costs of transportation. n Constraint. Prevents overconsumption and negative externalities, such as congestion and pollution.

cessful user fee, but its days are numbered. As an alternative, mileage-based user fees are being tested in pilot projects or used in limited cases. There are still technology, system design and cost issues to be resolved.

New Zealand and Germany have a distance-based fee for trucks. Australia and several European countries are doing pilot projects on applying mileage fees to passenger vehicles.

In the U.S., states have been testing MBUFs for more than a decade. Six years ago, the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act created Surface Transportation System Funding Alternatives, a federal program that awards tax dollars to states to accelerate testing of mileagebased fees.

THE ISSUES n New tax? Some motorists have

raised concerns about MBUFs. There is concern that it will be an additional user fee. But pilots are testing mileage-based fees as a replacement for the fuel tax, not as a new additional charge to drivers. n Privacy. The top concern about mileage-based fees is privacy.

Privacy can be addressed by having users choose to pay a calculated fee with no data collected on their road use. Alternatively, users who choose an option with a technology that measures their road use can choose to own their data, can determine what data to share and can use private vendors to ensure that the data is not shared with the state unless users agree to share it.

ESSENTIAL PRINCIPLES TO MBUFS Any mileage-based user fee program should adopt the following principles: n Road-usage charges should replace fuel taxes, not supplement them; n Road-use charges are not a tax but a user fee; n Road-use charges should focus on paying for use of infrastructure, and attempts to deal with such issues as congestion, emissions or noise

should be separate; n Road-use charges must provide for privacy and, in the event of shared data, ensure that users’ data are protected; and n Road-use charge systems should provide users with better information about their travel costs and choices and, when data is voluntarily shared, provide road owners with better information about use of their infrastructure.

the cost to collect mileage-based fees is higher than for fuel taxes but does appear to come down with scale. Pilot projects are increasingly exploring how to reduce those costs. n Equity. All user fees are levied according to use, not according to income or wealth, so they tend to be regressive. A mileage fee is no more regressive than is the fuel tax, so the shift in user fees will not reduce, or increase, the regressivity of the main transportation user fee. n Rural residents. Many rural residents are concerned MBUFs are not fair to them. But mileage-based fees are better for rural drivers. Rural residents already pay more in fuel taxes because they travel farther using more fuel and have fewer fuelefficient vehicles.

Research by RAND and by the states of Oregon, Washington and North Carolina found that rural drivers benefit from a shift to mileage-based fees and would pay slightly less. This is appropriate because rural roads also tend to be less expensive to build and maintain than urban ones.

Some environmental groups are worried that MBUFs will discourage purchase of electric vehicles.

Currently, electric car drivers avoid paying fuel taxes. Asking them to pay a fee for the roads they use is reasonable and fair to other drivers. States that have imposed road-use charges on electric vehicles report no change in the trend of EV adoption.

MBUFs are a long-term replacement for the gas tax. In the meantime, it is important to continue state pilots, expanding their scale and scope and starting to address the transition issues.

A national MBUF pilot could be helpful if well designed and executed, which would allow for larger-scale and more extensive testing. A national MBUF pilot should build on the experience of the states.

EV column wasn’t entirely accurate This responds to some inaccuracies in an inset published with an article about possibly providing battery charging terminals or space for them on Longboat Key, dated May 20.

The inset entitled “Anything but Clean” written by Benjamin Zycher, an economics professor at UCLA, was not accurate and begs for a rebuttal. ( I have owned Tesla cars exclusively since 2014, and I have a doctorate in electrical engineering.)

The word “clean” refers to the impact of automobiles on our environment. Both gasoline/diesel powered vehicles (internal combustion engine vehicles — ICEVs for short) and battery-powered electric vehicles contribute to air pollution. The question is which is better.

There are two kinds of pollution to consider: well to wheel (the production of carbon dioxide contributing to climate change from the drilling of oil to the manufacture of the cars) and direct (poisonous emissions directly associated with the vehicle type).

Direct pollution is easy.

ICEVs release fuel vapors while refueling and directly from the fuel tank vents of the vehicles and emit harmful gases directly from their exhaust systems, contributing measurably to air pollution.

Similar contributions are made by the trucks that carry the fuel from refineries or pipeline outlets to service stations. EVs emit no such gases.

Well to wheel contribution to atmospheric carbon dioxide (the greenhouse effect) is a much more complex analysis.

It takes electricity to operate pumps that extract oil from the wells, to operate fuel pumps at service stations, to power factories that build cars and trucks of all types, and to charge the batteries in EVs. The Department of Energy has modeled all these contributors in the form of annual emissions per vehicle measured in pounds of carbon dioxide. EVs contribute about 4,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. ICEVs add about 11,000 pounds a year.

Zycher also says EV batteries can’t be recycled. Those batteries can be recycled as a valuable source of lithium, cobalt, nickel and other constituents of the battery cells.

Tesla has not had much chance to do this yet because it has only been mass-producing cars for nine years.

EVs are much more environmentally friendly than gas/diesel-powered vehicles.

This includes noise pollution because EVs are so quiet that the federal government now has a requirement that they produce some noise when traveling under 18 mph to warn pedestrians.

Cheers for Matt Walsh This letter offers cheers for the Matt Walsh editorial and comments on Milan Adrian’s excellent letter titled “Totalitarian Crazies Will Lose Again” from a 93-year-old wartime veteran who will go to his grave with tears in his eyes for what has happened to this once-great country.

Adrian aptly describes the transformation that has taken place by the crazies of the 1960s and 1970s who were precursors to the chaos of the present. He closes predicting that the crazies lost and will lose again.

I wish that I could feel as confident, but I am concerned that the crazies might win this time.

We have an unprecedented structure in our federal government in which the crazies, led by Sen. Bernie Sanders, have at least as much power and influence in the Democratic party as the moderates.

Add to this a Republican Party in disarray, crippling its ability to provide an effective offset.

And we have a president who is grossly violating the advice of Barack Obama by leaning too far left after campaigning as a moderate.

President Joe Biden is the epitome of a politician who has shown time and time again that he can abandon his basic beliefs when it suits him.

Top this off with the fact that there are millions of young, spoiled, ignorant brats who embrace socialism along with

millions of college-educated, affluent liberals who have promulgated hatred of traditional America and believe that white people should apologize for their existence.

They also repeat like parrots that systemic racism dominates this country while they are too lazy to consult a dictionary that totally obviates their claim.

I hope that Adrian is right about the crazies losing.

Resident’s program connects students with industry giants Global Innovators Academy encourages students to connect with innovators and write about the advice they receive. interviewed leaders from companies including J.McLaughlin, Educate! and Red Hat Software.

Launching in a pandemic was difficult for most business, but the Global Innovators model was suited for it because students from all over the world interview entrepreneurs from different corners. Students have interviewed entrepreneurs in South Korea, Africa and Lebanon.

“It’s been really encouraging that we can make this program work for a young lady in Arizona, for college students in the U.S. and for refugee students,” Anselmo said.

Up until now, the program had been offered to college students through partnerships with schools. Anselmo is now opening the program to any student throughout the U.S. who is a rising junior or senior in high school, though he hopes local students and schools will participate.

The summer school program will run from June 16 to Aug. 4.

ne of the biggest challenges facing high school and college students is deciding what career path to take.

A Sarasota resident is hoping to help make that decision easier.

Kevin Anselmo, the founder of consulting company Experiential Communications, started Global Innovators Academy in 2020 to help provide students with exposure to innovative and entrepreneurial thinkers.

The “Interview an Innovator” course connects students with industry leaders whose work aligns with their interests. Students then take information from their interviews to write articles to be published online.

“Students need to learn really important communication skills,” Anselmo said. “So it’s very student-driven. They find their innovator they want to interview, they conduct the interview, and they learn these life skills.”

Anselmo will then provide optional weekly Zoom calls to answer student questions, provide coaching and support and introduce students to other entrepreneurs.

Anselmo said the program is important because it teaches students the benefits of networking and connecting with like-minded thinkers.

“The reality is anyone can do this,” he said. “But it’s really important that students learn to

do this themselves and learn how to network themselves. Our education focuses a lot on the knowledge you can use but not necessarily on the people you should be connecting with.”

Yejin Sohn, a student in Arizona who completed the program, said that when she started the program, she was not comfortable with reaching out to a person she did not know.

“I found out as I progressed through the course that connecting with professionals is not a big deal,” Sohn said. “Through the experience, I’ve narrowed down

my career interests and am more aware about the different opportunities.”

Aside from the networking benefits, Anselmo said the program teaches students what it’s like editing a paper for a professional website.

After students interview their professional, they begin to write a feature article on them that highlights their career journey, their key lessons for innovators and what the student is going to do with the advice they were given.

Anselmo then works with students through the editing process and upon its publication offers them advice on how best to promote it.

“For me the process is so exciting because having these conversations is how we get our ideas,” Anselmo said. “The more that we have conversations with people, the more we get sparks, and those sparks can light in a lot of different ways.”

Although students in the program are just required to write one article, they can choose to write more. Like most things in the program, it depends on the student.

County takes first step to sell administration center The county will list the administration center property as surplus land as it prepares to move to another location.

arasota County leaders could soon break out the moving boxes and head east, vacating their downtown headquarters.

County commissioners are moving forward with plans for a new administration center on a county-owned parcel at 1301 Cattlemen Road.

With a unanimous vote, commissioners declared the current headquarters and related buildings at 1660 Ringling Blvd. and 1646 and 1703 Morrill St. as surplus.

However, county staff will continue to work on the property until a new administration building can be constructed.

The move means county leaders can now explore the market value of the downtown location, which Commissioner Ron Cutsinger said will help the board make decisions on a future center.

“I think we’ve touched on a lot of numbers about what we think this facility and the properties might be worth, but we really don’t know for sure,” Cutsinger said. “I think it’s a good idea to get this out there and find out what numbers we are actually talking about.”

Chair Al Maio, who has consistently expressed his support of a

new administration center, made the motion after passing the gavel to Vice Chair Christian Ziegler.

Commissioners have long talked about switching facilities because of the increasing cost of keeping the current administration center running.

The building was constructed in 1973. County staff estimated maintenance and renovation costs for the next 10 years at $32.5 million and the next 20 years at $49 million.

“This is a defensive move,” Commissioner Mike Moran said.

“We’re talking $50 million to the taxpayer over the next couple decades to keep this building going. It’s just a smart business move.”

During a presentation to the board, Director of Capital Projects Carolyn Eastwood said the new building would be four stories and 120,000 square feet.

Parking for 320 vehicles would also be built.

A second concept plan showed another four-story structure to be built in the future. It would add 70,000 square feet for more office space, and a 388-space parking garage would be built next to it.

Office of the County Attorney, the Office of Financial Management, Library Administration, communications and human resources.

It would cost approximately $72 million.

The board’s charter cap is $24.5 million, which means the board could seek a voter referendum to in November 2022.

Although they intend to add increased technology and addi-

tional administrative space to the new facility, Ziegler said he doesn’t want the cost to be astronomical.

“At first I thought, ‘Do we really need to go spend all this money on an administrative building for staff?’ But this isn’t going to be a Taj Mahal project,” Ziegler said. “As long as we keep the cost down, I’ll be happy to support it.”

Eastwood said if the commis-

sion moves ahead with the project soon, the new administration project could be open in July 2025.

The location of the proposed parcel would place the new administration center next to the county’s Emergency Operations Center and Historical Resources Department.

However, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office also had eyes on the property.

Leaders hoped to develop the parcel, which has easy access to Interstate 75, into a public safety complex.

The department’s current complex at 6010 Cattleridge Blvd. is not large enough to accommodate the department’s needs.

Sheriff Kurt Hoffman said the former sheriff’s structure was about 193,980 square feet while the current is 72,000 square feet.

Commissioners proposed the department expand on neighboring parcels to the Cattleridge property, but Hoffman in April said stormwater issues would prevent development on the land.

Since then, County Administrator Jonathan Lewis said the county has negotiated with the department to identify two other Cattleridge parcels that would serve the department’s needs.

“As long as those two sites accommodate the department’s needs, [Hoffman is] happy,” Lewis said.

Eastwood will be back in front of commissioner June 8 with a formal resolution defining the terms of the surplus property.

TWO FOR TWO? Second season of FGCL softball in Sarasota promises to be bigger and better.

ast summer, the Florida Gulf Coast League, based in the Sarasota-Bradenton area, became the first summer softball league for college athletes.

That itself was a feat because the league held its inaugural season amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, it was home to terrific softball, league Founder Ryan Moore said. Year two of FGCL’s softball division begins June 16 at the Miss Sarasota Softball Complex, and the league has introduced a number of new ideas.

Although last season featured multiple venues, Moore said every game this year will be played at the Miss Sarasota fields. This will allow the league to livestream each game, thanks to cameras set up by the United States Specialty Sports Association. Miss Sarasota will also provide each team with a bat girl, chosen from the league’s roster of young athletes.

“If you’ve ever been to a college softball event, you know there are a lot of younger fans there,” Moore said. “Those girls look up to these players. They’ll get to interact with them and the coaches, which is cool.”

The league is also introducing a mascot — an anthropomorphic sun named Coasty — to add to the experience.

Then there is the competition.

Although the full rosters have not been set, Moore said that as good as last year’s talent was, this year’s group — now split among 10 teams instead of seven — is “better by 100 times.” Moore said

the league had to turn away some players from last year who wanted to return to give more athletes a chance at the experience. This year, to keep every team competitive, the league instituted a rule limiting each team to no more than eight players from Power 5 conference teams.

The influx of talent comes from not only returning players recruiting their friends but also college coaches seeing what last season did for the players who participated.

Former Riverview High infielder Devyn Flaherty is an example.

Flaherty, now a sophomore at Florida State, played for the FGCL’s Bradenton Lynx in 2020.

This year, Flaherty is second among Seminoles starters with a .298 average, plus five home runs and 22 RBI. Her play has helped Florida State reach the Women’s College World Series for the 11th time in program history.

“The extra at-bats and development does have an advantage,” Moore said. “The numbers back it up.”

Regular season games begin June 16 and continue through July 14, with two games planned most evenings, at 5 and 7:30 p.m.

There are also a handful of morning games.

Fans can purchase a single game livestream for $9.99 or the entire season, which includes 25 regular season games plus playoff and All-Star games, for $124.95, but Moore said he encourages fans to come to the games live. There is no admission fee.

“The level of competition is going to be insane,” Moore said.

“It’s just great entertainment.”

BASEBALL, TOO While the FGCL's softball makes headlines as the first of its kind, the league also features metalbat baseball. This division will feature 13 teams, with games played at Sarasota's Twin Lakes Park and elsewhere. Most games will be played in the mornings, beginning June 9.

High football Coach Jared Clark’s first game Sept. 11 was exciting, especially when I discovered Clark’s nephew, junior Tayven Clark, would be the team’s starting quarterback, his first at the varsity level. The Cougars defeated North Port High 42-7 at home. Clark threw for two touchdowns and ran for another.

It was a joy to watch, and I could tell the game meant a lot to both members of the family.

It was just as fun to witness the rise of Lance Trippel, the Sarasota High junior who

went from never playing football before to a varsity starting quarterback in a matter of months. First-year Coach Brody Wiseman saw the baseball player throwing a football and recruited him to the gridiron. By midseason, Trippel had the starting job.

He went 3-3 as a starter, including a first-round playoff loss to Lehigh High, 42-21. All things considered, that’s a strong start to a career, and Wiseman has been vocal about his quarterback’s potential. I’m excited to watch him after a full offseason.

Is it August yet?

No, seriously, can someone knock me out until August arrives? As much fun as the summer can be, I’d rather get back to the high school sports season. There’s nothing like it.

t’s been a year.

Has there ever been a time that such a sentence carried more weight? The 2020-21 high school sports year is over.

Somehow we got through it with minimal interruptions, and thank goodness we did because it was a year filled with impressive performances. That was evidenced by our top moments feature from May 20.

I love watching those big wins, but I also love the human moments you find in sports.

To that end, this will serve as a companion to the top moments feature, showcasing some of my favorite moments and storylines of the year. They might not have all resulted in victories, but they were meaningful just the same.

Listening to Sarasota High baseball Coach Clyde Metcalf is always a treat, but watching him perfectly diagnose his team’s issue and then fix it is something else. I’ve only been a coach once, and it didn’t go well —

some of you may remember the Observer’s disastrous 2018 club softball season — but in watching Metcalf coach his team to a 2-1 win April 20 against Lakewood Ranch, I feel like I learned things that would go a long way in making my coaching at least adequate. He has an uncanny ability to tell his team exactly what they need to hear, exactly how they need to hear it.

I’m glad the Booker High girls soccer team was able to get a win after three seasons without one, especially for the seniors. Losing takes a toll, even if you’re just playing a sport for fun.

Writing about Riverview High senior Allison Kukanza was another highlight. Kukanza became the first female athlete to score for the Rams football team, as a kicker.

Watching her kick was cool, but listening to her talk was even better. Kukanza said her confidence would occasionally stumble, but knowing there were other girls looking up to her helped her stay strong. That’s courage. Kukanza’s kicking career is now over, but I’m confident she’ll succeed in whatever she chooses to do. She’s got the right mindset.

ow that summer is here, a deluge of water sports are on the horizon, and some local athletes are making their mark.

At the 2021 NCAA Rowing Championships, held May 28-30 at Nathan Benderson Park, two former Sarasota Crew rowers competed in their teams’ II Eight boats, both in the No. 7 seat. Julia Braz, a freshman at Stanford University, helped the Cardinal to a second-place finish in the event’s grand final (6:24.48), 1.24 seconds behind the University of Texas. Angela Szabo, a freshman at the University of California-Berkeley, rowed the Golden Bears to a third-place finish in the event’s petite final (6:34.01), 3.10 seconds behind Brown. Both Braz and Szabo attended Riverview High.

In swimming, 11 Sarasota Sharks — and one Sarasota Tsunami swimmer — will compete in the USA Swimming Olympic Trials, which begin Friday in Omaha, Nebraska. The first leg of the trials will run Friday to Monday and will feature the Sharks’ Eliza Brown, 17; Alexander Gusev, 20; Amadeusz Knop, 16; Michaela Mattes, 16; Addison Sauickie, 15; and Gracie Weyant, 15, as well

as the Tsunami’s Evan Keogh, 16. The top two finishers in each event of the first leg will advance to the second leg, joining some swimmers who pre-qualified.

Those pre-qualified swimmers include the Sharks’ Liam Custer, 17; Nico Hernandez-Tome, 20; Connor Hunt, 18; Natalie Mannion, 17; and Emma Weyant, 19, the 2019 National Champion in the 400 IM (4:35.47) and a member of the U.S. National Team.

The second leg of the trials runs June 13-20. The top two finishers in each event will go to the Tokyo Olympics in July.

Finally, the USRowing Youth National Regatta will come to Nathan Benderson Park on June 10-13. Teams from 34 states will travel to Sarasota for the event, with more than 2,800 athletes expected to participate, making it the largest event in USRowing history. Spectator tickets for the event have sold out, though interested fans can watch for free from the park’s western side.

Hundreds hike in Sarasota in honor of Memorial Day H

undreds of veterans and their family members joined well-wishers of all ages Saturday in a Memorial Day ceremony and walk from J.D. Hamel Park to Bird Key and back.

Participants, led by Army veteran U.S. Rep Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, stretched for hundreds of yards as the group made its way along the bayfront, under and over the John Ringling Bridge and back again on a warm but breezy morning.

Some dressed for a morning workout on the 5K route while others wore military fatigues

and boots and carried packs or flags. Dogs walking alongside their owners and kids in strollers or wagons also joined in.

The meaning of the day was not lost on the participants as they gathered before the hike for an invocation from Jan Hamel Solomon and instructions from SRQ Vet organizers.

“We enjoy this day for what they gave,” Bill Sterbinsky said to the group before they broke into four platoons to begin the walk by crossing Bayfront Drive.

What’s your approach to the Sophie Tucker character?

I approach her respectfully but not religiously. I don’t try to impersonate Sophie, but I do give the flavor of her.

What are a few of your favorite songs in this revue?

That’s a tough question — I really enjoy so many of the songs. “The Last of the Red Hot Mamas” is one of my favorites.

“America I Love You” is a stirring piece. “The Man I Love” and “Hula Lou” are all wonderful.

“Life Begins at 40” is a lovely speaking song. It captures what being over 40 means. Now that I am over 40, I finally get it. “My Yiddishe Momme” has always meant an awful lot to me. Now it means even more. I recently lost my own mother, and it really strikes a chord. I’ve always wondered what Sophie Tucker felt when her mom passed. Now I know how it feels.

What’s the difference between Sophie Tucker’s stage persona and the real human being?

Every performer has a stage persona that’s not exactly who they are. But with Sophie, I think the persona and the person were very close. It’s hard to know for sure — there’s very little archival video or audio of her. But that’s my gut feeling. I think that Sophie’s style of performing was a lot like mine. When I’m on stage, I’m definitely me.

That’s not to say I’m entirely unfiltered. On stage you oftentimes hide your vulnerabilities.

I’d say Sophie and I have that in common. But I think she was probably pretty much the same offstage and onstage. As I am.

The first time you channeled Sophie Tucker was back in 2000, when this show premiered at Florida Studio Theatre. Has your approach to the character changed over the years?

Yes, in many ways. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve grown to understand Sophie Tucker much better. I can see where she’s coming from now, thanks to my own experience.

Sophie could be naughty, but she was never obscene — I love that about her. She was one of the very few female performers of her era who spoke about her losses in life and love. ophie Tucker’s career spanned the first half of the 20th century. She was a “superstar” before Andy Warhol coined the term and made a splash (in both Yiddish and English) onstage and on the motion picture screen.

Tucker was both a singer and a natural comedian who peppered her singing with wisecracks like: “I’ve been rich, and I’ve been poor. Rich is better.”

Who better to portray this larger-than-life talent than Kathy Halenda, a veteran singer and comedian who’s constantly on tour and not shy about making a few wisecracks herself? But Halenda’s connection to Tucker goes deeper. She was part of the Florida Studio Theatre creative team that first brought “Sophie Tucker: The Last of the RedHot Mamas” to life in 2000. The show’s been a smash ever since — at FST and around the country.

The pandemic has been hard for all of us. Sophie Tucker also endured hard times. Do you think her strength of character in adversity will resonate with contemporary audiences?

I do. Sophie was a survivor, and she lived through a lot. She experienced her own pandemic in 1918 and survived that. She also survived several unhappy marriages. Men cheated on her and stole from her, but they never stopped her. Sophie supported her family through hard times, like the Great Depression. Sophie was a strong woman — strong willed but very compassionate and generous to those she loved.

Whatever life threw at her, she took it in stride and kept going.

Musicians blend styles Differing talents come together for a one-of-akind concert.

All musicians have a style that defines them.

There’s a joy to collaboration, though, where mixing styles, influences and ideas can create something different and new.

Three Music Compound musicians like to think they’ve done just that.

Jennifer Msumba, Brandon Wilson and Luis Buenrostro spent months collaborating and playing with their individual styles to create a number of new songs for a Music Compound concert May 21.

It was originally the idea of

Music Compound Founder Jenny Townsend, who thought putting the three together would challenge each of them in a productive way.

“Luis is more of your guitar player, very solo,” Townsend said.

“I felt like him being introduced to Brandon and Jen would maybe pull him out of his comfort zone.

It could transform them and connect them.”

Work on the project started in February. The trio worked under the tutelage of Music Compound instructor Aaron Schiavone, who has led weekly classes to help the group refine its songs. He’s worked with the three musicians on their own in the past but had a new role in making sure they worked together and felt equally represented.

“When you get three strangers together, sometimes what can happen is the creative ideas just

kind of fizzle, and nothing happens,” Schiavone said. “So my role was to make sure that progress happened.”

Some of the biggest challenges for the group were logistical. Wilson, 18, produces music with other musicians often and operates out of a studio as he prepares to

attend Florida International University. Buenrostro, a 19-year-old Sarasota resident and student at State College of Florida, works as an assistant manager at a restaurant. Msumba, who is in her mid40s, lives about an hour away.

“There’s so many of us,” Buenrostro said. “We all are in differ-

ent parts of our lives and have so much going on.”

All three said they felt it was a collaborative experience that allowed their individual voices to shine through while contributing to something more.

“It can happen where one person just takes over, and you just feel like they’re just bossing the whole thing,” Msumba said. “It’s like, ‘Why am I here?’ But it was cool because we’re all so different and come from different worlds, but we were all able to respect each other.”

Msumba said she’s found her place and her happiness through songwriting.

It’s no surprise then that her lyrics would emphasize summer days and good vibes — it’s something she feels the world needs after a hard year.

The group hopes its song “Summer Vibes” gives a relaxing, chill feeling for people to relax with.

“We’re all kind of going through changes this summer,” Msumba said. “I thought maybe it could mention the pandemic but keep it in a positive light [because] I’m moving past that now.”

everal priests, a few rabbis and various ministers walked into St. Armands Key Lutheran Church on May 26, but it was no joke.

They were there to celebrate the Sarasota Ministerial Association’s 20th anniversary. The Rev. Ken Blyth opened the luncheon and thanked everyone for coming. Starting with 12 members in 2001, the group has grown to about 90 ministries. As lunch wound down, President and Founder Tom Pfaff began the program. After Pfaff led a ceremonial swearing-in, the group moved to one of the afternoon’s highlights: the Good and Faithful Servant Award.

The annual award, given to a member who “multiplies the grace that God gives many times over,” was presented to the Rev. Fausto Stampiglia from St. Martha’s Catholic Church. Stampiglia was born in Rome and gradually found his way to Florida. He’s ubiquitous in the community and respected for his willingness to be there for everybody, no matter how long they’ve known him. He always signs his letters with “God loves you, and so does Father Fausto.”

“Everybody knows him,” congregant Sara Brinn said. “It’s amazing.”
