Two noteworthy Siesta Key Village properties are lining up new tenants that will move in later this year.

Siesta Key Hardware owners Jim and Patricia Hiller announced their plans to retire at the end of July, which means the store will close after more than four decades in operation. Morton’s Siesta Market is slated to expand into that storefront following interior and exterior renovations, according to property owner Chris Brown.

The now-vacant 7-Eleven property on Ocean Boulevard doesn’t have a new tenant locked in, but property owners Jay Lancer and Jim Syprett said the Key West Sandal Factory is the leading candidate right now.

“It’s the right thing, I think, for the village, because I think the village needs a good mix of retail and restaurants.” Syprett said.

Lancer and Syprett hope to have a tenant ready to begin interior renovations by Aug. 1. Syprett said the plan for the property is to have all improvements finalized and a new business settled in by the beginning of 2017.

‘TOP HAT EDDIE’ The first of the 49 victims to be identified by the city of Orlando was Sarasota resident Edward “Eddie” Sotomayor Jr. He was 34.

Shakira Refos, one of the leaders for the “Hate Will Not Win: Candlelight Vigil in SRQ for Orlando,” addressed the crowd Monday evening. She attended Booker High School with Sotomayor.

“I remember seeing Eddie on the morning announcements when I was in high school,” Refos said.

Family members issued a statement about Sotomayor: “...He had a way of making the situation lighter, the day easier and the general mood just better.

He was witty, charming, kind and always worked to leave things better than he found them. He lived his life exactly the way he wanted to, to the fullest and on his own terms. We all loved him deeply, and more importantly, accepted him for who he was.

As a family, we are comforted by the outpouring of unconditional love from each of the lives ‘our Eddie’ touched...”

More than 130 miles separate Sarasota from Orlando in central Florida. But distance didn’t matter Monday during a candlelight vigil in Selby Five Points Park that Sarasota police estimate 1,500 people attended.

The crowd stretched from the foot of the steps at Selby Public Library deep into Five Points Park.

Residents stood shoulder-toshoulder and many hand-inhand to demonstrate the strength of the community following the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

The event included a tribute to Sarasota resident Edward “Eddie” Sotomayor Jr., 34, who was the first of the 49 victims killed to be identified by the city of Orlando following the Sunday morning attack.

Leaders of local LGBT organizations — including ALSO Youth, Prism Youth Initiative and the Harvey Milk Festival — responded quickly, using Facebook to organize the “Hate Will Not Win: Candlelight Vigil in SRQ for Orlando” in fewer than 24 hours.

Jonathan Hall, a longtime friend of Sotomayor, spoke on behalf of the slain man’s family.

“Forty-nine of our loved ones are gone today due to lack of love and compassion,” Hall said.

“Edward Manuel Sotomayor Jr. was the complete opposite. Eddie embodied love and compassion.”

Sotomayor was the national brand manager for ALandCHUCK.travel, a gay travel agency in Sarasota.

Hall spoke about Sotomayor’s love for “free hugs” and encouraged the crowd to embrace one another.

“This is heart-warming, and it feels right,” Hall said. “He would feel proud, and I’m sure he would give that crookedish smile of his. I

The overwhelming message of the evening was one of solidarity and support. A few times during the vigil, the crowd broke out in songs such as “We Shall Overcome” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino mingled with the crowd prior to the start of the vigil to assure them that they would be safe.

“This is about love. Love beats hate every time,” DiPino said.

“We’re here because we want to make people feel safe. We’re going to stand up and protect our community.”

A 2015 Lido Beach renourishment project, designed to repair damage from Tropical Storm Debby, was also intended to keep the critically eroded shoreline stable until the city’s proposed Big Pass dredge could move ahead.

Then Tropical Storm Colin hit.

The city of Sarasota is still working to measure the sand lost in the storm, but Lido Key Residents Association President Carl Shoffstall says the difference is stark post-Colin.

The beach hasn’t returned to the status quo before the Debby renourishment, but Shoffstall can point to big changes. A completely exposed rock jetty near Lido Beach Resort had been buried in sand after the Debby project.

A pile of sandbags sits along the dune line in front of the Suntide Island Beach Club — a necessary precaution to prevent water from flowing onto the property.

“I wish you could get us some beach, because it just tore ours up,” said Suntide employee Cheryl Shuster. “We didn’t have much to start with.”

The city and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are proceeding with the plan to dredge Big Pass, which would include restoration of the beach every five years for the next 50 years.

Shoffstall thinks that longterm plan should be accelerated.

After losing another chunk of sand following Tropical Storm Colin, Lido Key residents are anxious for a long-term solution to their shoreline woes.

He said any efforts to add more sand would likely be folded into the next scheduled renourishment project. In this case, that’s the Army Corps Big Pass dredge.

The timing of that project is still in question. No federal funds been allocated for the $23 million effort, and the Army Corps is still

working with state agencies to get approval to begin the project once funding is secured.

Without a serious long-term plan for the Lido Key shoreline, Shoffstall fears the beach could be threatened by a single storm.

“It’s not going to be a big one,” Shoffstall said. “It’s going to be a minor one that could really tear this up.”

Tropical Storm Colin ended up being relatively mild for most Sarasota residents, but a flock of birds living on Lido Beach went through a tumultuous time.

Since 2014, a growing black skimmer colony has called Lido home in the summer during the birds’ nesting season. The skimmers, classified as a “species of special concern” in Florida, started the nesting process a few weeks early this year.

Audubon Florida roped off a portion of the north end of the beach to protect the nests and chicks. Before the storm, there were about 700 adult skimmers, 150 nests and at least 40 chicks, according to Holley Short, Audubon’s coastal bird monitoring and stewardship coordinator.

During the storm, the water washed over the beach and the skimmer colony. The adults were forced back behind vegetation near Benjamin Franklin Drive to escape the effects of Colin. After abandoning the colony, the fates of the newly hatched chicks were in jeopardy.

“We were scared, because the volunteers that came out here couldn’t

find any chicks,” Short said.

Plymouth Harbor resident Lou Newman went out to Lido June 6 at high tide in the midst of the storm.

He found the water had wiped out the skimmer colony, but the wildlife photographer spotted several chicks being sheltered by the adults. He passed the images along to Audubon, confirming that some of the young skimmers survived.

The skimmer population did sustain damages. All of the nests were lost after the storm, but at least 25 chicks survived. In total, around 450 adult skimmers remained on Lido — and they’ve already begun to mate again.

With the Fourth of July approaching, Audubon is reminding visitors to the beach to keep their distance from the black skimmer colony during the next few months as the birds continue to nest. With cooperation from humans, the black skimmer colony can thrive even in the face of natural adversity.

“They’re up against so much already,” Short said. “It’s important for people to know to help them out and give them a little space. They just went through a tropical storm.”

Although some developers said it was too early to commit to that type of investment, the conversation about using private money to help improve the public realm was just getting started.

“It brought closure to the expansion of the DID within the Rosemary District, but it didn’t say that need goes away,” said Michael Bush, owner of Home Resource and president of the Rosemary District Neighborhood Association.

“What drew me to the Rosemary District was the vision behind what this area is going to be,” said Moriah Taliaferro, a 23-year-old future resident of Risdon on 5th. “I see it as kind of the new downtown — a mixture between St. Pete and the uniqueness of Sarasota.”

At this point, conversations about the revitalization of the Rosemary District can start to exit the hypothetical phase. The investments have been made; the buildings are starting to come out of the ground. More than 1,000 residential units will be added to the neighborhood over the next two years.

As a result, the conversation surrounding the Rosemary District has started to shift. The people who are investing in the future of the district — as well as those who have been there for years already — want to make sure the private growth doesn’t just occur in silos. How, then, can the fabric of a legitimate mixed-use neighborhood begin to come together?

Property and business owners — including Steve Bradley, president of the Risdon Group — are meeting monthly as a subcommittee of the Rosemary District Neighborhood Association in an effort to answer that question.

Eventually, the goal is to organize the community’s priorities and work collaboratively with public officials to try to address them.

“We’re going to facilitate that effort as private stakeholders and ultimately come together with the city and municipality to make sure these things are not ignored,” Bradley said. “The only bad that

Where is the neighborhood’s park space? How will parking be managed with all the new residents?

What should the streetscapes look like, and how will the connectivity to downtown be improved?

hen I was growing up, the sound of the electric percolator signaled the beginning of the day — that mug of coffee. I was enthralled with this essential element of the morning, but like most of us was told, “coffee will stunt your growth.”

Thus began the first of a litany of myths about coffee: It is dehydrating; it will give you the jitters and harm your heart; drinking coffee leads to smoking cigarettes and thus causes lung cancer; and probably many more of which I’m not aware.

Erase all those messages from your cerebral cortex and replace it with this new one: Coffee is just fine. In fact, its better than just fine. It’s pretty great.

DEBUNKING THE MYTHS

What scientists know for sure is that coffee is a complex cocktail of chemicals, including, of course, naturally occurring caffeine. Alongside this much-studied, consumed and oft-appreciated stimulant are a whole host of interesting chemicals. In fact, coffee includes more than 1,000 distinct and exotic-sounding compounds, which create a variety of physiological effects, some of which may surprise you.

Over the past several years, a number of studies have been subjected to systematic review as well as something called metaanalysis looking at the longterm consumption of coffee and cardiovascular disease as well as several other major health risks.

Here’s what they discovered: People who drank a moderate amount of coffee (fewer than five cups per day) experienced a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, neurological diseases like Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes and suicide. It has also been associated with better laboratory values in those at risk for liver disease, and with those who have liver disease, it’s associated with a lower risk of death. The authors of that review recommended that daily consumption of coffee should be encouraged for those with chronic liver disease.

The New York Times reported on two meta-analyses published over the past several years that included data from several million people. Both found that coffee was associated with, “a significantly reduced chance of death.” Wow. Excuse me while I run to my Keurig machine. (I recommend Peet’s Dark Roast, by the way, for home brewing.)

Health research has shown that up to five cups a day is beneficial for your body — more than that has not been shown to have any positive effects.

If you’re looking to lose weight, a study in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics found even more evidence that water is your best drink choice.

Researchers at the University of Illinois worked with more than 18,000 adults in recording their intake of beverages and foods. The researchers found that the participants who drank the most plain water in their daily diet consumed fewer total calories — plus took in less fat, sugar, salt and dietary cholesterol. Bottom line? They discovered that increasing water consumption could decrease calorie intake by up to 200 calories a day. That’s significant.

So, reach for the faucet. Women need a minimum of 3 quarts (96 ounces) of water a day and men 4 quarts (128 ounces), and in the summer when you face the greatest risk of dehydration, you might want to increase that amount.

REVISITING YOGA POLISH UP THAT DOWN DOG

In the April column, we reported on a yoga class for children, pointing out that yoga was a practice that can extend throughout all stages of life. Now, new research suggests that yoga does more than just make you more supple, improve your balance and quiet your mind. The European Journal of Preventive Cardiology just published a study that indicates doing yoga may help lower heart disease risk as much as conventional exercise such as that brisk walk each morning. Participants studied saw improvements in a number of factors affecting heart disease risk. They reduced their blood pressure, lowered their bad cholesterol, and — my favorite — lost an average of five pounds.

Tourism rates continue to rise, but they may level out into a new normal.

Katie Ware and Adam Brisske drove up from Cape Coral to spend a relaxing day on Siesta Key June 4. But first, they had to find a place to park.

“Parking is definitely the most stressful part of my day,” said Ware, who eventually managed to find a space in the crowded Siesta Key Beach parking lot.

It may be offseason on Siesta Key, but the beach remains full — a reflection of the increase in tourism that continues year after year.

Siesta Key Visitor Center and Volunteer Manager Mia Leone said she’s been seeing the number of visitors increase each year since Siesta Key was first named “Best Beach in America” by Dr. Beach in 2011, and she doesn’t see those numbers falling.

“I think (the seasons) are starting to run up into each other,” Leone said. “It used to end in April and there was a small break, and now it’s going right through.”

Despite her prediction that tourism will grow at a slower rate, Haley is expecting a larger-thanusual bump in activity during the upcoming 2017 World Rowing Championships and the World Rowing Masters in 2018.

Haley isn’t worried about the region’s health as a destination.

“I actually think a pattern of normal growth is good,” Haley said. “What you don’t want to see are huge spikes in room rates, because that can actually scare off potential visitors and give the impression we’re too expensive.”

Sea Spray Resort on Siesta Key concurs, saying that he’s been seeing more visitors each year during his six years there.

Visit Sarasota County President Virginia Haley said the growth has been a boon for the area, but she thinks things could slow down soon.

Sarasota County has seen year-over-year tourist development tax revenue increases often in double digits over the last five years. The tourist development tax is a 5% charge on rentals of six months or fewer.

For the current fiscal year, which began in October, tourist tax revenue is up 4.6% countywide through May over the same period last year.

Tourist tax revenue rose 13.8% between the 2013 and 2014 fiscal years; in FY 2015 over FY 2014, revenue grew by 12.3%.

Siesta Key accounts for 30% of Sarasota County’s total tourist development tax revenue this year so far.

Haley said the recession, coupled with the fears that oil from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill would reach Sarasota, left a lot of room for the market to recover.

She thinks the county will be see increases around 2-3% — what she calls “normal growth” — in upcoming years.

I read with interest your story this week on the citizen committee appointed to endorse the city’s position on its paid parking policy.

I find it super hypocritical that the chairman of the committee is Tom Delong, the general manager of Marina Jack. This is the GM of a PRIVATE business that takes advantage of FREE parking on city property (thus, the property of the taxpayers), preventing residents and visitors from using what is public property on one of the city’s jewels, Bayfront Park.

Do you realize how irritating it is to see rows of empty parking spots blocked off by barricades set up by Marina Jack for valet parking while visitors must circle around and around looking for a spot?

And to think Mr. Delong is in charge of a committee formed to parrot the city policy just so it looks like the city allowed public input is just too rich. I think it should have been pointed out that NONE of the committee members are representing the end users of parking spots. When the city allows true residents and patrons of downtown to provide input, then can it truly be called a “citizens committee.” Until then, let’s call a spade a spade.

This committee is a sham.

In the Sarasota area, his involvement extended to the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Asolo Repertory Theatre, Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast and Jewish Family and Children’s Service of the Suncoast.

Wilberding, of Casey Key, died June 11. He was 74.

“He was a brilliant, brave, and generous man who served his country, his community, and his family with honor, dignity and care,” said Mark Pritchett, Gulf Coast Community Foundation president and CEO. At age 19, Wilberding cofounded Up With People, a nonprofit education organization that encourages people to travel and bring the world together through service and music, after leaving Yale University after his sophomore year.

Wilberding spent 30 years as an international investment banker with Merrill Lynch.

A Casey Key resident since 1999, Wilberding became active in retirement with nonprofits in the community. He spent six years on the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation board and finance committee.

“The treasurers had a great deal of respect for him because of his background in finance,” said Priscilla Mitchell, Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation senior vice president and CFO. Wilberding enjoyed tennis, golf, bird watching (more than 2,000 species on all continents), travel and collecting. In 2009, he donated a 69-piece collection of Turkoman tribal jewelry to the Ringling Museum of Art’s permanent Asian collection.

Wilberding was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann “Stevie” Wilberding. He is survived by his wife, Teri Hansen; sons Van and Beau; daughters Ashley Balavoine and Crystal Hansen; six grandchilren; and first motherin-law Ann Spaulding.

A celebration of life will be held at 5:30 p.m. June 16, at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Donations can be made to the Stephen V.C. Wilberding Memorial Fund at Gulf Coast Community Foundation.

A proposed Sheraton hotel in midtown Sarasota drew a series of questions from residents, but the neighbors say they’re prepared to embrace the development under the right circumstances.

Daus Investments, a Sherman Oaks, Calif.-based developer, bought the site at 1425 S. Tamiami Trail in March. The firm filed preliminary plans in May to renovate the hotel, currently a two-story Baymont Inn and Suites, as a fivestory Four Points by Sheraton.

Jag Grewal, a commercial real estate broker at Ian Black Real Estate, served as the developer’s representative at a workshop Monday. He said the intent is to refurbish the hotel to better serve the midtown area, including Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

“I’ve driven past this hotel just about every day, and I’ve always wondered — why do we not have a decent hotel on the Trail that services the hospital?” Grewal said.

Residents supported the idea of the hotel getting as much as $9 million in improvements. Still, they were concerned about how the property would interface with the single-family homes on the other side of East Avenue.

A formal site plan has not been filed, so Grewal deferred to provide specifics in response to questions about parking, noise, light, alcohol service and land-

scaping. As plans are refined, the developer will work to address the neighbors’ concerns, Grewal said.

Although the plans call for increased height and new meeting space, the number of rooms would remain constant at 99.

Former Mayor Shannon Snyder was one of the residents in attendance Monday. He encouraged the builder to keep an active line of communication with the Arlington Park neighborhood.

If the hotel is designed to blend with its surroundings — using landscaping to create a harmonious link between private and public spaces, for example — Snyder is confident residents will offer support for the project.

“You want to enhance your property, just as we want to enhance our neighborhood,” Snyder said. “I don’t think it’s an adversarial situation. I just think you should think further than your property — and the neighbors would be happy to help you help them.”

EN GARDE 8 a.m. — 100 block of Pierson Lane Dispute: A man called the police to complain that his neighbor was on his property.

The man and his neighbor have an ongoing dispute regarding the property line and a fence.

The man says he owns the wooden fence, but the neighbor says no one owns it and that it’s encroaching on her property.

The two are awaiting a decision on the dispute in civil court.

Officers asked the neighbor to stay on her property and to tell her lawn keepers not to remove the fence before the court’s decision. Both parties agreed to stay away from each other.

CLEAN GETAWAY 9:07 p.m. — 3400 block of Cheshire Square Suspicion: A woman returned to her home and noticed her washer and dryer were missing.

The appliances were located on the balcony, and the woman lives on the second story of the building. There were no signs of forced entry, and no one other than her children have keys to the house. The woman spoke to the residential complex’s maintenance staff, and they said they would let her know the next day if they had mistakenly taken the appliances.

PANTS ON FIRE 12:56 p.m. — 200 block of North Lime Avenue Suspicion: A store employee noticed a man stuffing items into his pants. The employee got a picture of the customer and approached the man, successfully asking him to return all the items from his pants.

The employee estimated the man was attempting to steal about $50 worth of merchandise from the store.

SEAFOOD AND TAKE IT 10:10 a.m. — 900 block of North Beneva Road Theft: Supermarket employees saw a man and woman attempt to steal lobster tails by draping a sweatshirt over the food and leaving without paying. One of the employees approached the man in the parking lot and demanded he return the stolen items. The man reached into his pants and pulled out the lobster tail from the front. The man also dropped his wallet while he was leaving. Officers found the man’s ID card and a debit card belonging to another man. The stolen lobster tails were valued at $59.95.

hree years ago, Victoria and Caroline Krupa landed what they thought would be a terrific job as volunteers for the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup. They didn’t know it eventually would lead them to something bigger.

Victoria, the older of the two sisters and a 2013 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School, said she assumed they would be handed the role of ball girls or some other low-key assignment when competition began at the Civic Recreation Complex in Oshaua, Ontario, Canada.

Instead, the Krupas were given a more prominent task, keeping live stats. Victoria watched the fast-paced action, and called out codes to her younger sister, who furiously typed them into the computer.

The atmosphere was unlike anything Victoria and Caroline Krupa, who had been playing lacrosse since they were in third and first grade, respectively, had experienced. They watched the United States win its secondconsecutive gold medal with a 19-5 victory against host Canada.

It was in the middle of watching some of the best players in the world that the two sisters envisioned one day playing lacrosse for the United States.

“It was an unbelievable experience, and getting to share that with my sister just made it that much better,” Victoria said.

“Being able to represent your country is something every athlete wants to accomplish and dreams of doing, whether that be through the Olympics, or for lacrosse, through the World Cup.” The next Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup

is still a little more than a year away, but over the next 10 days, Victoria and Caroline will have the opportunity to represent the United States while playing for American International Sports Team Lacrosse.

Although the American International Sports Team Lacrosse isn’t a U.S. national team, it recruits some of the most talented athletes in the country to gain international experience.

On June 17, the GreyHawk Landing residents will board a flight for Paris, where they’ll spend two days touring the city and meeting their new teammates.

From there, the team will travel to Belgium for its first official practice together and an exhibition game before heading to Amsterdam to begin tournament play June 22.

“It’s an experience of a lifetime,” said Caroline, who graduated from Cardinal Mooney in 2015. “No matter how you get there, I think it’s worth taking.

Something like this you can’t pass up.”

Victoria, who is a goalie, received an invitation to play for AIST Lacrosse after her college coaches at Huntingdon College, in Montgomery, Ala., where she is going to be a senior in the fall, recommended her for the team.

“Not everyone can play on those (Olympic and World Cup) teams because of the talent level and how selective they are,” Victoria said. “I think the fact that AIST offers something like this for athletes who don’t have opportunities to play on a larger world stage is amazing.”

Shortly after Victoria accepted an invitation, it was announced that the team still needed a few more players. Their mother, Paula Krupa, approached Victoria about the possibility of SEE PAGE 15

Major League Triathlon will host MLT Sarasota, its second event of the 2016 season, at Nathan Benderson Park. The weekend will begin with a family fun run at 6:15 p.m. June 17 followed by a full day of amateur sprint, amateur mini and youth racing and festival activities from 6:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 18.

Caroline, a defender, couldn’t think of anything better than representing the United States alongside her sister, but she wanted to make sure her sister was all right sharing the spotlight.

“We’ve always been stuck together our whole lives,” Caroline said. “We’ve always been lumped together, and I knew this was something she really wanted to do on her own.”

Ultimately, it didn’t take long for Victoria to agree.

The two sisters haven’t played lacrosse together since Victoria’s senior year at Cardinal Mooney.

“We always worked well together on the field,” Victoria said. “We call it our twin telepathy even though we aren’t technically twins. Being able to play with each other one more time is exciting.”

The Krupas began playing lacrosse while living in Philadelphia. Their mother, Paula, played college lacrosse for Ursinus College, in Collegeville, Pa., where she has since been inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame.

Shortly after moving to Bradenton when Caroline was 8, Paula started Lady Manatee Lacrosse, which consisted of six girls, including her two daughters. The girls practiced together on the soccer fields in GreyHawk Landing.

The two sisters joined Lax Maniax in middle school and continued to play for the travel organization throughout high school.

of their own,” Victoria said. “It’s such a tight-knit community of people, and everyone who plays, coaches, officiates, is doing it all for the love of the game.”

In addition to playing for AIST Lacrosse, Caroline also is preparing for a change of scenery. After spending her freshman year at Seton Hill University, in Greesburg, Pa., the younger Krupa will be transferring to the University of Montevallo, in Montevallo, Ala., 45 minutes away from her sister at Huntingdon College.

While the two sisters won’t be in the same conference, they’ll meet on the field against each other for the first time Oct. 1 with the whole family expected to be in attendance.

“The first thing Victoria said to me when she found out was, ‘I guess the state is big enough for the both of us,’” Caroline said.

ois Davis, 80, sat at Table 12 holding a stack of cards fanned just below her nose like she’s playing a game of Texas Hold’em.

But these weren’t playing cards. They were blank business cards, and on them, she’d written her name and phone number.

“I’ve got five aces,” said Frank Mosca, who for the next five minutes would be Davis’ date.

Mosca turned to the others seated around the table.

“You can tell she plays cards,” Mosca told them.

Davis laughed. A sense of humor was one of the key traits she seeks. In fact, she said she would be willing to date younger if it meant finding someone who can keep up with her wit.

The scene unfolded June 8, at Kobernick House, during the first of six Stir It Up 60+ Speed Dating sessions. Hosted by the Friendship Centers and Kobernick-Anchin-Benderson, the event will switch locations every other month to give seniors more opportunities to meet potential matches.

The first event drew 47 singles ranging in age from 60 to 95.

Even more people registered for the event and were placed on a waitlist.

Earlier in the night, as the daters entered the room, the women stayed on one side, chatting with each other, while the men enjoyed a few minutes of guy time on the other. Meanwhile, KobernickAnchin-Benderson employees lingered near the refreshments and sangria, looking a lot like chaperones for the evening. No one was ready to hit the dance floor — yet.

The loud chatter made it difficult to hear, forcing some participants to lean closer to their potential partners.

All attendees were given a list of suggested questions.

“What do you do?” was a common question, often asked jokingly.

“I’m retired,” was usually the answer.

“Do you have grandkids?” was another common inquiry.

When just one minute remained, the tambourine’s ring warned that it was time to wrap it up. The men then rotated to the next table, while the ladies waited for their next suitor.

One challenge of organizing senior speed dating is finding enough men — and that’s not just because there are fewer men among older age groups.

Event coordinator Patricia McMahon finds that men can be harder to attract, in part because they tend to be “overly weary.”

“Some of these women have been married for so long,” she said. “The men start to question, do they even like anyone after that? The women are thinking it will be so much fun.”

Guy also knows the challenges of meeting single senior men.

Finding a balance between male and female attendees was a challenge for organizers of the Stir It Up 60+ Speed Dating.

The problem: So many single senior ladies, but not so many single senior gentlemen.

It’s the result of the lower life expectancy men have and, of course, the imbalance isn’t limited to Sarasota. The 2010 U.S. Census showed there were 40.3 million people ages 65 and older.

The Census found there were 89 men per 100 women among those ages 65 to 69.

For those 90 and older, there were just 38 men per 100 women.

how you expand your circle of acquaintances,” Guy said. “Men have more freedom and ability to go out and meet more people.

We’re the ones who cling back. I think that’s the perception that still exists out there with people our age.”

As the speed dates winded down, there was another chance for the seniors to connect: A dance followed the speed dating.

Davis — the dater who held her cards close at the beginning of the night — was still clutching all 12

cards. But she hadn’t given up.

“When I find someone I do like, I’m just going to slip my card right in his pocket,” she said.

But as she left Table 12, she admitted that someone caught her eye.

“He’s cute,” Davis said of a man she met on a date.

By the end of the night, he had the winning card: one of Davis’ business cards with her name and phone number.

“I almost fainted when he said he was 95 because he’s really spry,” Davis said. “He lost his wife six months ago. But he said on Wednesday night that was the first evening that he had really enjoyed in six months.”
