Did you see more skin than usual while enjoying the beaches on Siesta Key? There might have been a reason for that.

A Sarasota County parody Facebook account announced that the east section of Siesta Key beach would be “clothing optional” June 9. The post, which drew nearly 5,000 comments, even included a distant naked man edited onto Siesta Key’s sandy shores.

It wasn’t real, and the Siesta Key Association Facebook page was quick to step in and assure everyone that clothing was still required for a visit to Siesta Key beach.

The city approved plans for phase one of the Selby Gardens project this year, more than three years after the botanical garden first shared its vision for redeveloping its bayfront property.

Phillippi Shores Elementary School has a new principal.

Holly Staley, a former administrator at an International Baccalaureate World Elementary School, said she’s looking forward to working at Phillippi Shores, which is also an IB World School.

Staley earned a dual bachelor’s degree in special education and elementary education from Buffalo State College.

She holds a master’s degree in K-12 literacy from the University at Buffalo and a master’s degree in educational administration from Canisius College.

Selby President and CEO Jennifer Rominiecki said that the organization embarked on the master plan as a strategy for ensuring long-term sustainability as a research institution and community asset.

Carousel controversy

Amid criticism from nearby residents, the group behind a proposal to place a carousel in St. Armands Circle is asking the community for input before city officials weigh in.

eff Koffman has made a business out of operating carousels, but on Tuesday, he found himself at St. Armands Key Lutheran Church attempting to persuade those in attendance that merrygo-rounds aren’t the crowd-generating attraction the audience feared it might be.

Koffman is an investor in Ride Entertainment, a company that runs or maintains seven amusement facilities in New York City, including carousels in such locations as Battery Park. Now a resident of Golden Gate Point, Koffman approached the city about the prospect of placing a carousel in St. Armands Circle Park, the public park at the center of the St. Armands commercial district.

City Manager Marlon Brown encouraged Koffman to meet with stakeholders in the area and hold a public meeting to discuss the concept. That’s why Koffman organized a workshop Tuesday to present his team’s vision for a carousel in the center of the circle and gather feedback from a crowd of about two dozen.

Koffman offered few specific details about any installation on the Circle, noting the idea was still in a preliminary phase. He offered some descriptions of what the project might entail: a circus-themed carousel “that will be first class and consistent with the standards one would expect in St. Armands,” he said.

During a meeting focused primarily about the general concept of placing a carousel in St. Armands Circle Park, the majority of the speakers were St. Armands residents who feared the amenity would generate traffic, safety and noise problems.

“I believe what it will end up doing is creating more traffic, creating pedestrian problems,” St. Armands resident Barbara Shapiro said.

argued the ride would not be a meaningful source of new traffic, instead drawing its ridership from people visiting the existing stores and restaurants in the area.

“What we’re trying to benefit from is the audience that’s already in St. Armands Circle,” said Jen Horvat, a marketing professional involved with the proposal. “I can’t emphasize that enough.”

Tuesday’s workshop was not the first time members of the public had the opportunity to learn about the carousel proposal. In February, the St. Armands Business Improvement District heard a presentation and

offered some support for Koffman’s vision, calling it a potential opportunity to generate activity in an underutilized space. But the first iteration of the concept drew unanimous opposition from the board of the St. Armands Residents Association, citing concerns about possible detrimental effects to the community.

Koffman said he refined his proposal to account for the initial feedback he got. The first iteration of his plan called for additional attractions, such as games, swings and areas for photos, all in a roped-off area requiring an entry fee. At Tuesday’s workshop, Koffman said he has scaled back the concept to focus solely on the carousel.

For most aspects of the ride, Koffman offered no firm plans.

He did not disclose the expense associated with building the carousel, but he noted Ride Entertainment’s high-end carousels cost as much as $5 million. There was no price for riding the carousel, though Horvat said the group would take into account St. Armands Circle clientele in determining the appropriate cost.

Koffman said the group intended to share some revenue from the ride with the city and St. Armands Business Improvement District.

Koffman said the concept was inspired by his childhood in Binghamton, New York, a city that bills itself as the “carousel capital of the world.” Koffman pitched the ride as an opportunity to provide a memorable experience for children and families visiting St. Armands. Members of the project team said the carousel could feature the work of local artists to reflect the history and character of St. Armands.

“It’s wonderful to create those kinds of memories that I had as a kid,” Koffman said.

At least six speakers at the workshop said they did not believe the carousel was appropriate for St. Armands Circle Park. St. Armands Key residents said the area already experiences traffic issues, particularly during season, and they questioned whether another attraction would exacerbate existing problems.

“Everyone wants to come here and wants a piece of this crown jewel we have, but there’s a right way and a wrong way,” resident Charles Haff said.

In addition to the endorsement from St. Armands commercial property owners, the carousel concept has gotten support from some barrier islands residents.

According to a February email to the St. Armands Residents Association, the initial proposal drew opposition from nine members, support from six and an indecisive response from eight.

Heidi Brandt is a member of the Lido Key Residents Association who helped organize Tuesday’s meeting. She said Lido residents have expressed interest in the idea and that, as a parent, she felt the carousel would be a welcome addition to the Circle. Brandt also pushed back against attendees at the workshop who suggested a children’s attraction near a busy road would create a safety hazard, noting that St. Armands hosts an annual Halloween event without issue.

“I assure you that parents of 4-year-olds will not let go of their hands and let them run into traffic,” Brandt said.

Brandt said the park is a cityowned property, and St. Armands residents aren’t the sole stakeholder with an interest in what happens there. Shapiro acknowledged that point, but she believes the city should show deference to the individuals most likely to be affected by any change.

“Why should someone who lives 4 miles away tell me what should be in my backyard?” Shapiro said.

Throughout the meeting, Koffman and the other presenters continued to rebut the assertion that the carousel would cause traffic issues. Horvat attempted to draw a parallel to other amenities designed to capture a slice of an existing audience at a central destination.

“I’ve never said, ‘I’m not going to the mall because of the kids’ court,’” Horvat said.

Jerry Fogle, the city’s parks and recreation director, said officials would continue to gather input on the concept. Should the project advance, the city said any proposal would go before the City Commission for final approval.

As he pushes forward amid vocal concern, Koffman said he was intent on facilitating an ongoing conversation pertaining to the carousel.

“It’s a process,” Koffman said.

“I need to talk to the city. I’m listening.”

EDC cut off

City approves height increase for Lido condo A developer plans to build a 10-story, 70-unit residential building on the site of the Gulf Beach Motel and Coquina on the Beach.

Despite the objections of some neighboring residents, the City Commission ruled that a project up to 135 feet tall at 930 and 1008 Benjamin Franklin Drive would be compatible with its surroundings, allowing plans for a 10-story condominium project to advance.

On Tuesday, the commission held a public hearing on a requested rezone for the 3.89acre Lido Key property. The Ronto Group, a Naples-based developer, intends to build a 70-unit condo on the site of the Gulf Beach Motel and Coquina on the Beach hotel.

The rezone application sought to change the classification of the land from residential multifamily to waterfront resort, a revision that would increase the maximum buildable height from 95 to 135 feet.

Brenda Patten, a land use attorney representing the developer, argued the rezoning proposal was in line with the city’s comprehensive plan. The city’s future land use map lists waterfront resort as an allowable implementing zone district on the property. Patton said the city has not denied a similar rezoning request in the past two decades.

The proposal drew opposition from some neighboring residents who said the height increase would be out of character. Patten pushed back against that assertion, noting that many residents who raised those complaints resided in condominiums that are eight stories tall.

“It kind of escapes me how they can say our building is not compatible with the neighborhood,” Patten said.

Patten said the effects of the building on view corridors would not meaningfully change whether it was built at 95 feet under existing zoning or 135 feet under the new zoning. A majority of the commission expressed a similar perspective. Commissioner Liz Alpert noted other properties in the area are under the waterfront resort zoning, and existing structures, such as the Lido Beach Resort, already exceed the proposed height.

“I just don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t go ahead and approve this,” Alpert said.

fter years of scrutinizing the Economic Development Corp. of Sarasota County, Mike Moran hit his breaking point when he learned the private agency had failed to hire its top candidate for its vacant leadership position.

Moran, a county commissioner since 2016, said he was told the candidate who rejected an offer wanted the EDC board to establish clearer, measurable goals for what it expected from its leadership staff.

That echoes a line of criticism Moran has repeatedly raised about the EDC, whose mission is to sustain and grow Sarasota’s economy through activity, such as business recruitment. The EDC funds its work with a combination of public and private money; in 2021, the organization’s $1.7 million budget included $1.07 million in county funding. In his time on the commission, Moran has pushed for more data quantifying the county’s return on its investment.

Moran hasn’t been satisfied with the EDC’s response to his requests. That’s why he placed an item on the June 8 commission agenda to phase out the county’s local business tax by 2024, eliminating the recurring source of public funding for the EDC. The proposal drew a mixed response from the commission, but the county ultimately approved Moran’s desired funding changes in a pair of 3-2 votes.

“This has been going on for years. It didn’t just spring up.

This wasn’t a rash decision on my part,” Moran said. “From the very beginning, all I’ve ever asked for is clear, measurable goals. I made it very clear that I wanted less words on paper and more numbers on an Excel spreadsheet.”

Under the approved motion, the county’s local business tax will be phased out by the end of fiscal year 2024. The tax would be maintained through fiscal year 2022 and then lowered by one-third each following fiscal year. In addition to eliminating the local business tax, the board reallocated $4.96 million from its economic incentive development fund to the general fund, leaving behind $1 million for future incentive opportunities.

EDC leadership said the proposals surprised them, with board Chair Charlie Murphy learning about the potential funding cut only when the meeting agenda was published. Dave Bullock, the EDC’s interim president and CEO, said it appeared the county

“Good governance suggests a better community decisionmaking model where stakeholder input is requested, and all interests get a chance to weigh in on proposed changes in community priorities,” Bullock said Friday in an email to EDC board members.

Bullock highlighted the work the EDC has done in 2020 and 2021, which included pandemic response efforts, such as managing the county’s Small Business Resiliency Loan Program. Bullock said the EDC has received positive feedback to that work from businesses and county officials. He said the EDC has seen increased interest in its efforts to market Sarasota County as a business destination, and the organization has worked with new and expanded businesses that have created 337 jobs in the first half of 2021.

Kathy Lehner, the president of the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce, said on Tuesday that the county needs the EDC to continue promoting business growth in the area.

“There would be a huge gap with anyone who would actively recruit new business, which we need,” Lehner said. “We would be driving companies down to Lee County and Charlotte County, where [the] workforce is. We need

someone actively championing Sarasota County.”

Moran said the funding cut doesn’t necessitate the end of the EDC’s work. Moran suggested the EDC could continue to operate with private funds and that the county could consider supporting certain initiatives the organization undertakes if he sees a tangible public benefit. Still, absent a more detailed operational plan with specific benchmarks the EDC hopes to hit, Moran said he won’t be swayed by appeals to maintain a steady stream of public support for the organization.

“I’m not interested any longer in faculty-lunchroom, dormroom philosophical chitchat anymore,” Moran said. “I want measurable outcomes.”

Commissioner Ron Cutsinger feared a defunding process would cause any potential candidates for the EDC’s vacant CEO position to shy away from the county. Com-

missioner Nancy Detert, a critic of the EDC in the past, said she thought the organization was positioned to produce a meaningful return on the county’s investment.

Commissioner Christian Ziegler said the funding cut doesn’t guarantee a permanent retraction of county support for the EDC. If the EDC is capable of providing metrics quantifying the impact of the work it does, he said funding could be restored.

“Bringing something like this basically forces the EDC to restructure and act quickly,” Ziegler said. “I am so frustrated that this just gets dragged out so long, so this is a way that you maybe can force that accountability and that reset.”

Moran suggested the money reallocated from the economic incentive development fund could be used to support the creation of a mental health care district, a move officials are considering for fiscal year 2022. Bullock said the county has the means to support both programs.

“Sarasota County is a sophisticated community with a rich history of addressing complex community priorities in responsible ways,” Bullock said. “This false choice put forth in this motion does not pass the standard of good governance or good community decision making.”

Moran, however, said the two proposals were independent ideas. Regardless of how the reallocated money is used, Moran said he felt the EDC had been given ample opportunity to respond to county feedback and demonstrate improved efficacy.

Face masks will be optional in Sarasota County schools for the 2020-21 school year.

After weeks of debate, school board members moved ahead

with a policy that would allow students and staff to decide whether to wear a face mask while on school campuses.

The policy change, advanced on June 1, has to be advertised for 30 days, so it will not officially be enacted until a board meeting in July. The rule that makes masks mandatory on school property will expire June 30.

Instead of just allowing the policy to expire, several board members wanted to make sure that students and staff who preferred to wear a mask were allowed to do so.

“I think what we’ve seen in many places, not just schools, is that there are different opinions,” board member Bridget Ziegler said. “What I don’t want is teachers or students or staff to have any issue. … This should be something that it’s very clear.

They’re optional, and therefore, they can’t be denied either way.”

Consistent with Gov. Ron DeSantis’ executive orders, the district cannot consider an individual’s vaccination status when interpreting the policy. It must solely be the parent’s decision.

Patrick Duggan, the district’s attorney, said the policy would need to be adjusted to determine what is or isn’t an allowed face covering. Under the proposed policy, allowed face coverings include a medical or “COVIDstyle” mask or a clear face shield.

Gaiters, buffs and bandanas may not be worn as an alternative.

Those who choose to wear masks must supply them themselves, and any mask must not cover the individual’s eyes such that they cannot easily be identified.

Forms will be distributed to parents to elect whether their child wears a face mask, and schools will monitor whether students wear the masks in conformance with the instruction given by their parents.

The initial policy stated that should a student fail to wear the

mask in conformance with parental instruction, the student’s parents will be notified. Although board members supported the optional policy, many were concerned with placing an additional burden on teachers.

“I think that we need to have some assurances that teachers are focusing in on instruction,” board member Karen Rose said.

Duggan said when writing the policy, attorneys tried to strike a balance between enforcing the policy and making an overly burdensome requirement on teachers. He suggested teachers could have an attendance sheet with notation of what each child is supposed to wear and keep note of whether the child is conforming.

However, Superintendent Brennan Asplen said a daily check-in might be too much for teachers. Instead, he suggested that concerned parents should ask teachers in their regular check-in emails.

“I just want to make sure we’re not putting an additional burden on our teachers in any fashion because they already have enough to do,” Asplen said.

Ultimately, the board removed language from the policy that required teachers to monitor whether students are wearing the masks in conformance with parental instruction.

In addition to guidelines for those who chose to wear a mask, the policy also lays out warnings against bullying.

“We made it very clear that anyone wearing a mask will not be subject to bullying, harassment, intimidation, pressure, hostility or retaliation regarding that decision,” Duggan said.

A response to a response LETTER TO THE EDITOR: YOUR VIEW ON CRT SMACKS OF HYPOCRISY

W

hen we published the May 27 editorial, “Misguided obsession with race,” the intent was to inform our readers of some of the activities occurring in Florida’s taxpayer-supported universities with respect to the controversial issue of critical race theory.

Frankly, prior to that, we hadn’t heard much about it. But as more and more stories aired on news programs and in newspapers, we were exposed to the website CriticalRace.org, which has documented how critical race theory is being promulgated in more than 200 U.S. universities and colleges.

Curiosity got us. What about Florida’s public universities?

Surely some taxpayers and, in particular, parents and grandparents who are paying thousands of dollars for their children to attend these schools might want to know.

Sure enough, there was information people would want to know — should know.

Granted, the editorial provided only slices of how our public university administrators have engaged their institutions in this arena. But based on our limited research, there was enough information to prompt us to conclude the taxpayer-funded universities are promoting “the false, destructive, divisive, narrative that the U.S. is systemically racist.”

Well, that did it.

That comment triggered a response from Sarasota resident, Terry Hynes, former dean of the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida (1994 to 2006).

We seldom do this, but Hynes’ thoughtful letter raised questions that challenged whether our objections to CRT were hypocritical, given our laissezfaire, free-market leanings. We felt compelled to respond: n “[I]t is at least surprising that a person who supports a free marketplace for commerce would oppose analyzing critical race theory by applying the classical, libertarian concept of a ‘free marketplace of ideas,’ which assumes that, in a fight between truth and falsehood, ‘truth will out.’”

We are all for a free marketplace of ideas. But we need convincing that is what exists at our universities, especially when all of the CEOs of the universities come across in their actions that they are believers that our nation is systemically racist.

What’s more, when anyone peruses the courses and curricula at, say, the University of Florida and the University of South Florida, just to name two, you can’t help but develop the strong impression and thought

CRT, like the editor’s individualism theory, is an alternative approach to understanding the politics, economy, culture and — especially with CRT — the legal system we live with — why our world is the way it is, how it got that way, its strengths and shortcomings and what we might do to correct the shortcomings “in order to form a more perfect union,” as we patriots say.

CRT, like gender studies and social history, for example, grew out of the cultural revolution of the 1960s and, specifically with CRT, frustration in the 1970s with the stalled progress of civil rights in politics, law and the economy.

Like similar fields, CRT aims to provide a corrective lens to the racism, sexism, et al. of the “great [white] man” theory that dominated much of Western culture for centuries.

The Observer’s editor is so overwrought about CRT’s perceived evil that he fails to identify sources in a fair and balanced way (one right-leaning website does not suffice) or sort out the evidence he would need to make a reasoned and reasonable case against it.

Maybe it’s just us, but what is one to think when you see that UF’s College of Arts & Sciences offers 35 courses on gender, sexualities and women’s studies?

It offers 25 courses on AfricanAmerican studies. It offers eight courses on Latin American studies. Hispanic students, meanwhile, comprise 19.5% of the UF undergraduate student body; black students comprise 5.6% of the undergrad population.

The College of Arts & Sciences also has a link to what it calls “a comprehensive list” of courses — 192 in all — on race and racism, social justice and social inequalities.

Even the USF College of Engineering has its own division of diversity and inclusion, including a program whose top objective is developing the “advancement of minority women in STEM as faculty.” And, to be

Does the editor really think we have eliminated from our schools or other institutions the inequities of racism, sexism and other biases that damage our ability to govern ourselves?

Does the editor who flourishes in a country that supports freedom of expression as a foundational value really think students suffer from exploring ideas that show us where our historical aspirations fall short? I would like to think not.

The editor’s conflating of all the material he quotes fails his readers by not considering elements of CRT that are potentially useful for solving entrenched social problems.

Are there extremes in CRT that deserve objection and rejection? Yes, just as in almost any theory.

In a democratic country and system of public education, however, a search for the truth — or at least a consensus on our shared values — is best achieved by exposing students and others to a wholistic exploration of issues, ideas, events — supported with relevant evidence — that will enable them to reach fair and balanced conclusions about the progress we have made as a nation and how to improve our still-fractured systems, so we may come closer to achieving “liberty and justice FOR ALL.” Democracy is a messy process. With a reasonable willingness to explore alternative ideas and efforts to understand those we might initially reject — in the classroom instead of on the street — it need not be a violent one.

Maybe these courses are all legitimate subject matters.

But help us out: Where are the counter-balancing courses about men, heterosexual people, the virtues of capitalism or, heaven forbid, a course that explores the legions of Americans who contributed remarkable inventions that have made this country and the world a better place? God forbid there be a course or two that celebrates the goodness of the greatest nation on earth. n “CRT is … an alternative approach to understanding the politics, economy, culture and — especially with CRT — the legal system.”

“An alternative approach to understanding”? How can there be rational understanding when CRT’s proponents have a foundational belief that U.S. laws and institutions are inherently racist

We know a toad when we see one. Any theory that requires training sessions for white government employees to stand up and denounce themselves for being white doesn’t need evidence of “fair and balanced.”

That isn’t fair and balanced. n “Why should parents … fear students being exposed to issues related to diversity and inclusion?”

As they say on Madison Avenue, “it’s all in the presentation.”

What is “inclusion”? Quotas based on skin color? On skills?

On merit? How does “inclusion” square with a society historically based on merit, or Martin Luther King Jr.’s admonition not to judge by the color of your skin but by the content of your character?

Sorry, diversity and inclusion always smack of quotas. n “Does the editor really think we have eliminated from our schools or other institutions the inequities of racism, sexism and other biases that damage our ability to govern ourselves?”

No. Sadly, they will always exist, some more than others.

There will always be bad people; prejudiced people. Sure, we need to continue to strive to improve.

But compared to most other countries, where would you rather be — Saudi Arabia? n “Does the editor who flourishes in a country that supports freedom of expression as a foundational value really think students suffer from exploring ideas that show us where our historical aspirations fall short? I would like to think not.”

We do not. But in the interest of fair and balanced, do our universities ever explore the ideas and examples that show our nation’s historical achievements in a positive light vis-a-vis, say, China and Russia’s genocidal regimes? All we hear is how awful we are. n “A search for truth … is best achieved by exposing students and others to a wholistic exploration of issues, ideas, events — supported with relevant evidence — that will enable them to reach fair and balanced conclusions.”

Indeed. “Wholistic” is the key.

But how is it “wholistic” when the university presidents and their generals embrace the claim and beat the drum that we are prima-facie systemically racist?

Just as we try to remain neutral and present both, or multiple sides, in our news reporting, it would be far more helpful to the health of our nation if our institutions of higher learning strived for similar balance.

Today, it sure doesn’t appear to be there.

But not all of the numbers tell such a one-sided story.

Since January, the average age of patients hospitalized at SMH with COVID-19 has dropped from the 70s to the mid-50s, and the average age of those dying has dropped more than 20 years.

While this means many of those most vulnerable are receiving the vaccine, it also means far too many people are still at risk of serious illness or death.

Just this month, we saw four patients die within two days.

Three of them were under 60.

One will never see 50. All of them were too young.

With COVID-19 vaccines now widely available for everyone 12 and older, the responsibility falls on every one of us to get the shot if we can.

Like masks and social distancing these past months, we do this not only to protect ourselves but also to protect our families and those most vulnerable, especially those who might not be able to receive the vaccine because of age or otherwise.

Vaccines save lives. And that’s the simple truth.

Neither neighbor involved in the argument wished to file a report, but an officer said it appeared the argument was verbal in nature and tied to a long-time dispute between two families.

The man saw two kids nearby with items in their hands. The man stopped his car to get out, and the kids fled the area. The

man looked at his car and saw a scratch on his window, possibly from a rock. The man estimated the cost of the damage at $200.

WEEDING OUT PHONIES 10:25 a.m. — 1400 block of South Tamiami Trail Suspicion: An employee at a dispensary found a counterfeit bill in the register while she was checking the store’s balances from the previous day. The employee said the transaction must have occurred between the previous afternoon or evening, but because more than 100 customers came through, she did not know who used the counterfeit currency.

The employee said the security camera could not be accessed without a subpoena. Officers took the fake bill to be destroyed.

DUMPING GROUND Midnight — 900 block of Highland Street Ordinance violation: A property owner found an unusual amount of trash outside the property’s trash bin. The owner said he knew the garbage wasn‘t from any of the tenants because there were multiple baby-product boxes, and none of the tenants had children. The owner said the waste prevented his tenants from using the bin, and garbage trucks would not take the extra trash because there was too much. Officers made contact with the man who dumped the garbage, who said he did so because someone asked him to dispose of trash she could not fit in her garbage can. The man said he dumped the garbage at that location because he used to live across the street. The man said he now understood it was improper to leave the trash on someone else’s property and that he would not do so in the future. Officers stood by as the man gathered the trash and removed it from the property.

The owner of McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre in downtown Sarasota said he knew from the early months of the pandemic that his business would be closed down for some time.

“I told my staff a week before we shut down: ‘Save your money.

They’re going to shut us down.

This pandemic is real, and it’s going to last awhile,’” McCurdy said.

During the shutdown, he has found ways to occupy himself.

But that’s finally set to change.

McCurdy’s will reopen June 11 with two shows Friday and Saturday. The planned schedule is to have a series of weekend shows through June and July with up to 250 people in attendance and no mandatory masks. McCurdy said he has spent thousands on a new air-conditioning system that will help circulate and purify the air.

But this won’t be the first time McCurdy has reopened his establishment. McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre opened last November, but it was a brief return — McCurdy said he was struggling to get as many as 100 guests into his theater during a week that would typically attract 1,200.

He and his wife, Pam, have been paying close attention to the national numbers for vaccinations but even more so the number of vaccinations for Sarasota and Manatee county residents.

“We knew without vaccines that we weren’t getting numbers into the theater,” McCurdy said. “We felt by mid-June that everyone who wants a vaccine has had one. … I wanted to open at a time where we’re not going to distance.”

It’s been a long year of waiting, though it could have been more financially perilous. McCurdy, 65, said he’s no stranger to adversity with his business and has been saving money for decades in case of an emergency.

“People my age have lived long

enough to know that no matter how much you have it together, every now and then you’re going to get sucker-punched in the back of the head,” McCurdy said. “I’ve been saving money for a long time. If we’d been [only] five years in business, we’d be in trouble.”

A number of McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre faithful will compose the talent for upcoming shows including headliner Flip Schultz, Dale Jones and other comedians from across the Southeast.

McCurdy said he wanted to pick “club favorites” who had an established history performing at the theater that he knew would be a reliable draw for people.

The theater will also reprise its drag queen bingo night June 13.

What’s more is that McCurdy is planning to host comedian BlueCollar Comedy Tour alum Ron White for shows in early August.

“This year I will host [more],” McCurdy said. “People will see me this year more. … I want to be here, and I want people to see me here.”

Playwrights get their due Young authors’ works win prizes at Florida Studio Theatre.

ine View School student Matrick Thorpe has been on a winning streak.

The eighth grader has been submitting his work to the Florida Studio Theatre’s Write A Play and has seen his words adapted into plays that are shown at the Young Playwrights Festival Day. That routine hit a snag last year when the pandemic ground inperson events to a halt.

“We streamed them to schools across the world for no charge,” said Caroline Saldivar, the director of children’s theater for Florida Studio Theatre. “We’ve heard people are happy they can share the plays with grandparents and aunts and uncles. So there’s a reach we wanted to get this year.”

Young Playwrights Festival Day returned in a virtual format this year and made up for lost time to boot. The 2021 ceremony celebrated two years of winning playwrights with a virtual ceremony June 5.

Thorpe had winning plays for both years. He won for “The Ballad of Billy” in the 2019-20 season and “Different But The Same,” a monologue about the pandemic and life events he’s gone through, in the 2020-21 season.

“With ‘The Ballad of Billy,’ I was set on making people smile,” Thorpe said. “With ‘Different But

Addison Cupo, a 12-year-old student from Booker Middle School, also found herself winning two years in a row, first for “The Amazon Box Talks” and “Zoomance: The Musical!”

“Zoomance” is about a group of kids trapped together and slowly learning about one another. Cupo spent a month working with other students to create the play and said the most fun was writing lyrics.

“It was hard making up the lyrics and making sure they had the right tempo,” Cupo said.

Her mother, Anito, said it seemed to be a quick process to see the musical take shape.

“She’s pretty humble and not making it a big deal,” Anito Cupo said. “But I’m thinking ‘Oh, my gosh, this is amazing!’”

It was a long road to get to the virtual ceremony, and Addison Cupo was just glad to see her production.

“It was a relief to [win],” Cupo said. “We’d been waiting so long to see who’d win.”

A former Sarasota Crew rower’s career at Stanford was delayed

by COVID-19 restrictions — but it worked out in the end.

reshman Julia Braz’s face wasn’t sullen when she and her Stanford teammates crossed the finish line second in the 8+ grand final race at the NCAA Rowing Championships II at Nathan Benderson Park.

Instead, it was a look of pride.

“It was incredible what we were able to do,” Braz said.

Braz, who attended Riverview High and rowed for Sarasota Crew, said the moment was the culmination of months of intense work by her and her teammates, much of it in a time crunch.

Braz said because of COVID-19 restrictions, she arrived on cam-

pus in late January, and the Cardinal rowers were not allowed to race together until April. Most teams had been together since fall.

Fall is when teams bond and figure out the best boat combinations. Building blocks for the spring season, Braz said.

But other unusual circumstances worked in the rowers’ favor. Normally, Braz said, rowers at Stanford don’t room with each other, but because the school wanted to prevent spread of the virus, it made an exception.

“That was the best thing that could have happened,” Braz said.

“We all got close. We all learned to lift each other up. We relied on each other a lot with rowing and school work and other things.”

Braz said the Cardinal’s close quarters translated to quicker chemistry building, though the team was still behind on the water.

But once races began, Stanford’s talent took over. The Cardinal qualified for the NCAA Championships as an at-large bid after

Julia Braz said she always feels nervous before races, but her nerves were especially active before the NCAA Championships, where she raced in front of hometown fans.

“I got to have a little piece of home,” Braz said. “My family was able to watch me race. I had friends from high school rowing there, as well. That all made me even more excited to race. It was special.”

Although they did not compete directly, Braz and Stanford went against former Sarasota Crew teammate Angela Szabo and the University of CaliforniaBerkeley at the championships. Szabo, a freshman, and her second varsity 8+ boat finished third event’s petite final (6:34.01), 3.10 seconds behind Brown.

“When I got here, I felt like I could step onto the team and help, but as a freshman, you are never going to be the best,” Braz said.

“Rowing with [Sarasota Crew] helped, they’re a great club, but the biggest thing I got from them was being prepared to work even harder in college.”

Not only did Braz’s boat finish second (6:24.48) in the second varsity grand final, 1.24 seconds behind the University of Texas, but the Cardinal also finished second as a team behind Texas. It was the team’s best finish since 2011.

The season began strange, but Braz could not have dreamed of a better finish.

“It’s been a long journey,” Braz said. “Even though waiting all that time [to start rowing] and training on my own was hard, coming together in the end was so cool. I’ll never forget that.”

Former Booker High boys basketball Coach Markus Black is leaving to become a graduate assistant at the University of Arkansas.

first year in Sarasota. He was always willing to talk, even after tough losses, and he was open and honest during interviews, a unicorn quality these days. His players held a lot of respect for him, something evident by the number of former Tornadoes who Black said congratulated him on his new job. That meant a lot, he said.

Here’s an example of the kind of guy Booker will be missing.

When asked for his favorite memory from his Tornadoes stint, Black didn’t say the

2017-18 run to the final four. He instead pointed to a moment from earlier that season. A road loss against Lakewood Ranch High. Yes, Black’s favorite moment came after a loss, when the Tornadoes players and coaches had a long, emotional heart-to-heart about what was working and what needed to change. Out of respect for his players, Black still refuses to spill exact details, but the conversation had its intended effect. It’s what led to everything else that happened that season, Black

said. It was a real moment to teach, and Black took advantage.

I’d be shocked if Black didn’t similarly take advantage of the opportunity he has now. Good luck at Arkansas, Markus; Sarasota will be watching.

arkus Black’s joy lasted only a few moments.

The former Booker High boys basketball coach took the time to process his career’s next big turn — a graduate assistant job with the University of Arkansas — before his thoughts turned to his current team and the administration at Booker.

That’s just the kind of guy Black is.

“The reality was I would be forced to walk away from the young men I have had the pleasure of serving the last few years,” Black said. “I would be leaving the place I have called home since 2010. The hardest part of all of this was telling people I was leaving.”

Black, 33, was Booker’s coach for five years, compiling a 91-49 record. In 2017-18, Black led the Tornadoes to the state final four, coming within a point (62-61) of beating eventual champion Leesburg High in the semifinals.

Leaving the Tornadoes was not easy, Black said, but the opportunity to jump to the college level was one he had to take. He told the administration first, then his players, following the team’s annual banquet last month.

Black has been in Fayetteville, Arkansas, since Monday. His first job? Working at the Razorbacks’ youth camp with the team’s other graduate assistants.

Although it has been an easy way to transition to the job, Black said, he’s eager to get involved in a real Razorbacks practice soon. Black said he does not know specifically what the team will ask him to do, but graduate assistants often do a bit of everything at the NCAA Division I level, including recruiting, player evaluation and even some on-court coaching.

Although he only recently arrived, Black said he’s already getting a grasp on the vibe of the town. Everyone is abuzz over the Razorbacks’ baseball team, which is hosting a Super Regional series — essentially a Sweet 16 series — against North Carolina State this weekend, with the winner advancing to the College World Series. In Fayetteville, Black is learning, the Razorbacks are everything.

Black said the 200-300 kids at his youth camp know the names of all the Arkansas basketball players. They look up to the Razorbacks. College sports are meaningful there. That’s appealing, Black said.

It is always a bittersweet moment when one of the mainstays on the Sarasota sports scene leaves the area. His first year as coach at Booker was my

hree athletes with Sarasota ties have qualified for the Summer Olympic Games, with more potentially this month.

Sarasota Military Academy graduate Mary Tucker originally qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in women’s air rifle, but the games were put off a year, resetting the qualification process. Tucker, a sophomore at the University of Kentucky, has since qualified for the mixed team air rifle (10 meters) and, on May 26, the women’s small-bore rifle three position (50 meters).

Former Sarasota Crew boys rower Clark Dean was named to the USRowing Olympic team on June 4. Dean, a junior at Harvard University, will compete in the men’s four alongside teammates Michael Grady, Andrew Reed and Anders Weiss.

Skateboarder Jake Ilardi, who still calls Sarasota home when not traveling the world for competitions or training, qualified for the games in men’s street skateboarding. Ilardi, 24, had been in good shape for qualification for months but clinched his spot with a seventh place finish at the Street Skateboarding World Championships on June 6 in Rome. rom virtual classes to canceled proms, it’s no secret that the senior class of 2021 had an unusual final year of high school.

Callahan said the community at Mooney made her senior year memorable, even though COVID-19 brought a variety of changes.

“Mooney is a really great community, and everyone was really supportive in terms of the different struggles with COVID,” she said. “The most enjoyable time was just time spent with my peers, so I’ll definitely miss that.”

Callahan, the school’s 2021 valedictorian, said that although she found the idea of giving a commencement speech daunting, she wanted to remind her classmates to find their unique gifts and use them.

“Everyone has extremely different and unique gifts and talents,” Callahan said. “I just wanted to encourage my classmates not to be wary of pursuing their unique passion, even if they’re different or unconventional.”

However, many say they found solace in friend-

ships, performances and pastimes.

Here’s what some of Sarasota County’s senior class had to say about their challenges and greatest moments of joy in their last days of high school.

And I came out, and I’m like, ‘Disney lied to me.’”

Although many things changed, Summerlin was glad to continue work as a film and animation student with Booker’s Visual and Performing Arts program. In his senior year he wrote and directed a film adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Last Rung on the Ladder.”

“I love film, and I got really lucky because film at my school is a priority,” Summerlin said. “We really tackle deep, hard issues and stories to expand our story mindset, and I’m so lucky to have been taught how to do that properly.”

Clancy transferred to Riverview High School in his sophomore year to participate in the marching band.

Although it wasn’t able to compete this year, the Kilties fielded a show at halftime of home football games. Clancy’s favorite memory from his senior year is the first football game in uniform.

“Seeing everybody out on the field from the podium getting to enjoy themselves regardless of if it was a normal, full show or not was amazing,” Clancy said.

Clancy said he’ll always take with him a lesson from his band director, Andrew Dubbert.

“Mr. Dubbert says all the time, ‘Take advantage of this opportunity.’

After hearing that so much, there’s a lot of opportunities I regret not taking, so now I really want to push myself to try everything I can.”

“If you took 110% advantage, it didn’t make a difference,” Laguerre said. “It didn’t stop anything [for me].”

The pandemic started when she was a junior and gave her the opportunity to focus on applying to colleges and achieving various scholarships. What’s more, the extra time helped her think about exactly what she wanted to pursue and what college she wanted to attend.

Laguerre also had more time to hit the gym, which she feels paid off on the varsity basketball court.

“I worked out a lot at home, and I just got better,” Laguerre said. “It was a great season for me even with the pandemic.”

Riverview seniors celebrate R

iverview High School followed up its socially distanced 2020 graduation with a lively, in-person event for the class of 2021 on June 5.

More than 600 graduates marched into Ed Smith Stadium, where they stood for the national anthem and then quickly set about taking the stage to receive their diplomas.

Principal Erin del Castillo and members of the senior class board spoke to the assembled graduates about their journey to finishing their senior year. Senior Class President Sam Elnaggar delivered the farewell comments to end the event, and the night concluded with the graduates throwing their caps high into the sky.

ore than 400 Sarasota graduates bid farewell to high school with a ceremony June 4 at Ed Smith Stadium.

Students took their seats to reminisce, reflect and hear words from staff and speakers. Mayor Hagen Brody, a Sarasota High alumnus, encouraged students to enjoy their time as best they could. Students also heard from peers and Principal David Jones.

The ceremony ended with the graduates tossing their caps.
