Siesta’s sand man
Josh Beckmann, the owner of Beckmann Properties on Siesta Key, likes to bring a little something home from the beaches he’s visited. The real estate broker has sand samples from more than 170 places around the world, many on display in his front office. Traveling the globe and collecting sand since the 1990s, he still feels that nothing beats the pure white texture of Siesta Key sand. “Everyone enjoys the debate over the best sand,” Beckmann said. “My thing is, ‘Hey, come see for yourself.’”

It’s no surprise a high schooler would be a hit on social media, but Sarasota High’s Jade Ortwein did it with the help of a congressman. Ortwein’s artwork “Docked at Cortez” attracted the most shares and likes in a contest promoted by U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan. So Ortwien was named Facebook Fan Favorite in the competition, featured on Buchanan’s official social media page. The artwork will hang in his Washington, D.C., offices for a year. Sarasota High’s Lydia Graue won second place in the overall contest. Cardinal Mooney High’s Christina Mroczkowski was third.
