It took one week and two meetings, but the City Commission has finally rendered its first-ever verdict on an appeal regarding administrative approval of a site plan — and, in a split decision, the board reversed city staff’s decision to permit the proposed expansion of the Woman’s Exchange.

The Laurel Park Neighborhood Association had appealed city staff’s decision to issue a building permit for the project, located at 526 Rawls Ave., in November.

The 3,524-square-foot single-story structure would be located just northeast of the current Woman’s Exchange building at 539 S. Orange Ave. The expansion was designed to improve the operational flow of the nonprofit consignment shop.

A loading area along Rawls was the major point of contention for Laurel Park representatives, who argued the new use would be incompatible with the adjacent residential neighborhood.

In the end, the commission voted 3-2 to reverse the prior approval of the project, preventing the Woman’s Exchange from moving forward with its plans to expand. Vice Mayor Suzanne Atwell and Commissioner Liz Alpert voted against the reversal.

Siesta residents stew over wastewater project extension TIMELINE

room home on the Grand Canal, they were willing to overlook one not-so-attractive feature.

Across the canal, the Siesta Key wastewater treatment plant generated an array of unpleasant odors that would occasionally waft toward homes in the Siesta Isles neighborhood.

Tiernay took solace in knowing the plant would soon be gone.

The county had an order from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection that required the failing facility to be shut down by the end of this year. Although the project had already gone through a three-year delay, residents carried on with the knowledge there was relief in sight.

“You kind of go, ‘OK, it stinks, but we just have to bear with this until 2016,’” Tiernay said. “Hold on, and then it’ll be gone.”

In March, that all changed.

County staff said the work required more time. It would take until the end of 2017, at least, to shut down the plant. The County Commission voted unanimously to extend the project deadline to June 2018.

Dave Cash, the county’s wastewater division manager, said he hadn’t heard too many complaints about the facility in a March interview with the Sarasota Observer.

If that was true before the extension, it isn’t anymore.

Tiernay is leading the charge, but she’s not alone. She’s appealing the FDEP’s decision to give the county an extension, and she’s gotten letters of support from more than 50 of her neighbors. Residents are speaking up to send a clear message: They want their concerns addressed.

“I’m upset and offended and annoyed that, while people were making life-changing decisions, the county kept back information that was very pertinent to us,” Tiernay said. “They have a responsibility to keep us informed.”

The county has been working under a Florida Department of Environmental Protection order to address issues at the failing wastewater facility since 2011. Here's a few of the key dates since the county assumed control of the plant:

Although the project began following a FDEP order to shut down or upgrade the aging wastewater plant, the county says that facility isn’t responsible for the delays. The extra time is needed to expand existing mainland facilities and install pipes between the mainland and island, according to Cash and Gregory Rouse, county engineering design manager.

Despite the hurdles, staff is confident it can complete the project by Dec. 31, 2017, barring outside delays. Once complete, the county believes the improvements will be significant.

“Everything should be going down,” Rouse said. “Less truck traffic, less noise, less potential for odor.”

residents is the smell — reports of odor issues in the area date back to the late ’80s. It pops up unexpectedly, and the affected streets can change depending on wind conditions. When it happens, it’s unavoidable.

“It goes between raw sewage to a chemical smell to a gassy smell,” Tiernay said. “It’s bad. We come in the house; we can’t sit out and enjoy our backyard.”

Several residents said the smells were occurring more frequently now, too. County staff was unaware of anything that might be amplifying the problem, but residents asked for the issue to get more immediate attention.

“I know it’s worse,” said John Desideri, who also lives on Idlewild. “Where it might have been — not tolerable, but less frequent, now there’s something going on there I can’t explain.”

This isn’t just a matter of neighborly courtesy: The county is required by permit to mitigate odor issues. Cash said he’s discussing odor treatment solutions with a consultant, but there’s no

timeline for implementation.

He says staff is working diligently on the project, but he acknowledges it could have gotten more attention in the past. He thinks increased communication from residents — even if it’s via complaints — should improve the county’s reactiveness.

“Could we have done more?

Tiernay and others still have doubts about the county’s commitment. That’s why she’s filed the appeal in an attempt to get the county to condense its timeline — or at least improve the existing conditions. She believes the county underestimated the significance of the delay, and it’s hard for her to accept that staff is on the same page as residents.

“If we had known, we wouldn’t have bought this house,” Tiernay said. “We lay in bed at night when we’ve been booted out of our backyard, and we’re really, really annoyed.”

Bridge project brings troubled waters As city and state officials defend the Coon Key Bridge project, a dispute has arisen over the timing of the work.

At the tail end of tourist season, motorists traveling across the John Ringling Causeway are still experiencing significant traffic congestion as a result of a Florida Department of Transportation project to repair the westbound segment of the Coon Key Bridge.

With residents complaining about the backups, city and FDOT officials are asking for patience — and explaining why the construction began this month. Although the state agency says the project was scheduled based on input from local businesses, the leader

of a St. Armands merchants group says FDOT is mischaracterizing the feedback she provided.

The origins of the project date back nearly a year. Sarasota City Manager Tom Barwin said FDOT crews discovered critical structural issues with the bridge last summer and sought to begin repairs in September. Given the four-month construction window, FDOT received concern from merchants that the project would extend into the beginning of season, according to FDOT spokesman Robin Stublen.

As a result, the state agency settled on a new start date of April 4 — a change endorsed by the St. Armands Circle Association, Stublen said. This is a major point of contention for St. Armands Circle Association Executive Director Diana Corrigan, who says her brief input on the project is being cited as the impetus for a start date that’s troubled merchants and residents alike.

Stublen informed city officials that during a conversation in May, Corrigan “strongly agreed” April 4 would be the best time to begin the project. Corrigan said she did discuss the project with FDOT Public Information Officer Lauren Hatchell in May, but the conversation was limited to her concerns about a September start date and a recommendation that the project begin “after season.”

of the start date for the project until March 4. At a March 8 meeting of the St. Armands Business Improvement District meeting, Corrigan expressed her concerns about the timing, asking city staff if it was possible to push the start date back further.

Construction was not delayed for several reasons: the impending start of hurricane season, the need to finish the project in the

fiscal year it was budgeted for and the worsening state of the bridge, city and state officials said.

Both Corrigan and Hatchell said there was a miscommunication about what constituted the end of season. FDOT believed that a date after Easter would qualify, but an early Easter had merchants expecting visitors to stay after the holiday. Corrigan recognizes the project, already underway, can-

not be stopped. She just wanted Stublen to acknowledge the agency was responsible for beginning the project in April.

“He instead has elected to try to use me as the scapegoat for the chosen project date in an effort (that) I can only assume is to try to take the heat off himself,” Corrigan wrote in an email to city, county and state officials.

Asked to respond to Corri-

gan’s comments, Stublen said he stood by his previous statement.

Stublen said he had not talked to Corrigan directly and that he was not aware of this particular project until last month.

Although Corrigan was concerned about the general lack of communication with local stakeholders — several city officials weren’t aware of the project until earlier this year — FDOT is currently working to address issues where it can. With the project officially underway, both Stublen and Barwin said the relationship between the city and state agency is healthy.

Hatchell said FDOT is evaluating options for alleviating the congestion on John Ringling Boulevard, including extending the green light time on Bird Key Drive and hiring off-duty officers to direct traffic. At Tuesday’s St. Armands BID meeting, attendees said traffic had gotten slightly better since the project began.

Above all, Corrigan said the confusion surrounding the Coon Key Bridge project proved the need for clear, direct dialogue between state and local leaders. As construction continues through July, she hopes this process serves as a cautionary tale.

“Any time we’re going to have these projects, we need to sit down and meet,” Corrigan said.

“We have a communication plan in place that we know well in advance, so everybody knows what’s going on and nobody’s taken by surprise.”

And as for the mix-up that led to an early April start time?

“It’s etched in their brain April 30 is the end of season, so they’ll never make that mistake again,” Corrigan said.

Street closure rules remain open to question A March art festival in Southside Village that came as a surprise to many merchants is drawing attention to the city’s oft-discussed event regulations.

On Easter weekend, the Sarasota National Art Festival closed a por-

tion of Hillview Street between Osprey Avenue and Laurent Place over a three-day stretch.

The event, which impacted just one side of the street, gained approval from the city with signatures from three businesses.

All three operate in office buildings that are not open on weekends, when the art festival itself was taking place.

Other businesses in the area were surprised to learn the event

was happening on a major street in Southside Village. Gecko’s Grill & Pub manager Josue Gamboa didn’t know if the restaurant was negatively impacted, but the festival definitely caught people off guard.

“It just kind of happened without us knowing what was going on,” Gamboa said. “We just started noticing the tents going up.”

Eddie Morton, a member of the Southside Village Business Association who owns Morton’s Gourmet Market, echoed Gamboa’s comments. Even though the event was relatively small, he said the loss of 15 on-street parking spaces for a weekend affected the operations of restaurants in the district.

He said his problem wasn’t with the event itself, which benefits the Rotary Club of Sarasota.

It was with the lack of communication from the organizers, who were moving an established event to a new location.

“Nobody bothered to ask the association,” Morton said.

“Southside Village knew nothing about it.”

The confusion surrounding the Hillview art festival came after a wide-reaching City Commission discussion of special events regulations. One of the many topics touched on at that meeting was the process of obtaining street closures. After receiving a complaint regarding the festival from a Southside Village visitor, Commissioner Susan Chapman said the event highlighted flaws in the street closure approval system.

“They take signatures from every business, not just the businesses that would be open during the event,” Chapman said. “That allows people who are unaffected by the event to often outnumber

the people who are affected.”

Although the City Commission has taken no direct action to adjust the street closure policy, multiple commissioners have signaled their desire to take a more comprehensive look at event regulations in the near future.

As it pertains to the Hillview street closure, the three businesses that approved the art festival were the only three that qualified as affected businesses, which must approve street closures by a two-thirds majority.

Other businesses along that side of Hillview didn’t meet that standard because access to their parking area remained open.

“I can tell you that’s been the rule for the 16 years that I’ve been doing events for the city,” said Toni Welicki, who helps coordinate the city’s special event permitting.

Morton doesn’t believe there’s necessarily a problem with the city’s regulations. He said event promoters should reach out to neighboring businesses and come up with a strategy that works for all parties involved.

Morton said Southside Village hosts a number of events, including Hogs on Hillview, Giving Hunger the Blues and the Firehouse Chili Cook-Off. In those cases, businesses are given ample notice regarding the event, which allowed for better coordination.

Morton doesn’t hold the issues against the Rotary Club. Still, he reiterated his disappointment with the communication from the Naples-based art festival operator that coordinated the event.

“Nobody bothered to get any buy-in from anybody,” Morton said. “The promoter just ramrodded it through.”

ith overwhelming research demonstrating that 80% of chronic disease is preventable through lifestyle changes, a broad-based collaborative effort to change the practice of medicine is taking place. It’s called lifestyle medicine, and it’s transforming the way that many health care providers practice medicine.

Eighty percent. That’s an astonishing number, and it begs the question: Are you practicing a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly, eating healthfully and managing your stress at a level that could eliminate your own risk factors for chronic disease?

I know I don’t even come close. What I do know is that figure — 80% — caused me to alter my thinking about my health care. No more blaming Grandma Tilly for those bad back genes, or Great Uncle Harry for the possibility of diabetes. All of a sudden, I experienced a sense of responsibility for myself that I never quite had before. And that’s what’s behind this new monthly column, “Lifestyle RX.” YOUR OWN PRESCRIPTION FOR HEALTH CARE

Each month, we’ll bring you stories about how your neighbors and others in our little patch of the Gulf Coast are taking responsibility for their health care. We’ll learn about their own lifestyle RX. How they modified their behaviors — turning physical inactivity and unhealthy eating into a lifestyle that keeps them happy, engaged and out of the doctor’s office.

We’ll report on the trainers, nutritionists, therapists and physicians whose passion it is to nurture that germ of self-care and make it bloom. Because at the end of the day, self care is really what it’s all about. “When you love something, you take good care of it all the time,” says Sarasota-based psychotherapist Karen Koenig, who recently dipped her toe into this new movement by co-authoring a book to be published in early 2017, “Helping Patients Outsmart Overeating: Psychological Strategies for Doctors and Health Care Providers.”

“Lifestyle medicine is about individuals making deliberate, intentional choices,” she reports.

“That’s really the biggest part of it.”

Yoga for youngsters Every Thursday afternoon, magic happens in the Wild Ginger Apothecary storefront on Superior Avenue in Gulf Gate. The participants enter the studio, grab a yoga mat and take their place in a circle on the wood floor. They sit in a cross-legged yoga pose and wait for their teacher to get the class started.

The only difference between this class and probably a dozen others going on around town at the same time is that these students are all well under 5 feet tall.

In fact, most of them haven’t reached the age of 10. Shocked?

I was until I learned that nearly 2 million kids ages 4-17 are now practicing yoga, according to the National Institutes of Health.

GETTING YOUR OM ON

“Yoga is for everyone, and kids, especially, can benefit on so many levels,” says instructor Jen Maecker. “I have two kids myself and have seen the positive impacts of mindfulness, deep breathing and building strength and flexibility through the yoga postures.”

What I see as I wander around the studio is a situation that could easily be chaotic is remarkably well ordered and focused. Maecker uses a variety of techniques to engage the kids and ease them into postures.

She taps into their imaginations and they become little lions, or snakes (the cobra) or very strong mountains.

“The way I approach teaching yoga to kids is through fun and interactive games, stories and songs as well as many, many props,” reports Maecker as we debrief following the class. “I always read the class as we get settled in and plan according to the children’s energy level and focus. Sometimes they need a quiet time to settle in to class.

Other times, we need to get moving right away. I have to be ready to throw out my lesson plan and improvise if needed.”

focus, concentration and selfregulation. Kids yoga classes can build confidence and selfesteem and support emotional intelligence. Maecker doesn’t say this, but I can’t help but extend that into better academic performance.

That said, experts say it’s off base to assign a competitive motivation to kids yoga. Susan Verde, author of “I Am Yoga,” a kids book on the practice, stresses that yoga is not about striving for perfection. While the practice is exercise that improves energy, flexibility and balance, yoga may be the “sport” for children who don’t respond to the stress of competitive athletics.

Here are a couple of other benefits worth considering: n Yoga is a practice kids can use for an entire lifetime. n Yoga is a practice kids can do with a parent or grandparent. It’s a great way to bond. n Yoga encourages deep breathing and foundational meditation, two stress-busting exercises that are core principles for Lifestyle RX. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

If the city is searching for information on other municipalities that have moved their elections to line up with state and national races, its neighbor to the north might be a good place to start.

The city of Bradenton moved its elections from spring to fall in 2010.

Since then, just two City Council races have been contested. On Monday, two speakers suggested a move to the fall might amplify both spending and the power of money in local races.

Here’s how the financial expenditures broke down before and after the change in Bradenton:

Cost data and estimates from the city auditor and clerk’s office confirm the notion that moving election day to the fall would produce savings for the city.

Those who oppose moving the general election date to November have raised concern about “ballot fall-off.” Because the city races would be placed at the bottom of a long ballot, would many people simply not bother to cast a vote?

Here are two examples of the ballot fall-off between the first and last items listed in the city’s November general elections over the past four years:

The ballot language approved in January would eliminate the city’s current run-off system, which requires a second election in May if no candidate earns an outright majority in March. That addressed concerns about low voter turnout in August, when the vote would have been held in a run-off system.

n January, the City Commission approved ballot language for a referendum asking voters whether to move municipal elections from spring of odd-numbered years to fall of even-numbered years.

Still, on Monday — a week before the final vote to approve the referendum — the commission held an hour-long workshop to hear testimony from four guest speakers on the advantages and drawbacks of the change.

The decision to hold the workshop, taken together with the 3-2 vote to approve the ballot language, suggests some degree of uncertainty remains regarding whether the city will move forward with the referendum.

The discussion Monday rehashed several common arguments for and against moving election day. Fall elections would likely save money and increase voter turnout, but they could also invite a series of new issues that would impact the character of — and average voter interest in — city elections.

If the commission approves the referendum, the question will be placed on November’s ballot.

Here are some of the issues raised and addressed at Monday’s workshop, as well as statistics that might guide the commission’s decision-making at its April 18 meeting.

New superhero guide dog statues join the pack

W

hen the sheets were lifted, 12 new caped crusaders for Southeastern Guide Dogs were revealed to the public.

The latest sculptures were unveiled Tuesday evening at the State of the Arts Gallery as part of the Superheroes on Parade campaign to raise awareness about the superhero role that guide dogs play in giving independence to their companions.

Among the additions revealed Tuesday was a statue designed by artist David Steiner for the Observer Media Group.

Members of the public will be able to vote for their favorite sculpture and are invited to share photos on Instagram using #SuperheroesOnTheStreet.

The contest will run through Sept. 18; winners will be announced at a Sept. 24 gala.

SPRAY FOR MERCY 3:50 a.m. — 200 block of Cocoanut Avenue Property Damage: A man discovered graffiti painted overnight on a condominium building. He said this was a recurring issue for the condo, and the incident marked the third time the condo association has had to paint over graffiti. He said there was no sign of vandalism when he went to bed at 10:30 p.m., but when he woke up early the next morning, he discovered graffiti on the wall, trash cans and electrical boxes.

An officer said an extra patrol would be conducted at night to deter any illegal activity.

SECOND-HAND BLUES 7:15 a.m. — 2200 block of Hyde Park Street Dispute: A woman was holding a yard sale and reported that her neighbor was coming over and taking clothes without paying for them. DUMPSTER DIVING 12:26 a.m. — 1400 block of Main Street Theft: A man placed his wallet on the bar at a business after paying for drinks, then turned around to talk to his friends. He later realized he had forgotten his wallet, went back to the bar and discovered it was gone. The man said the driver of a truck cut him off, so the man pulled alongside the truck and started yelling and making obscene gestures. At the next stoplight, the driver of the truck got out of his vehicle as the two continued to yell at one another. Before the driver got back in the truck, he reportedly kicked the driver’s side door of the man’s car, leaving a small dent. The man provided officers with a possible license plate number, but police were unable to track down more information about the suspect.

Alisha Leopold, 31, remembers the contents of her backpack when she was taken from school to a foster home during her junior year of high school.

The only personal items she was able to bring with her on such short notice were her textbooks and a bottle of Fruitopia.

Leopold remembers being too embarrassed to tell anyone she didn’t have a toothbrush or soap.

“I got my first cavity when I was in foster care,” Leopold said.

“I used a washcloth, baking soda and salt. That’s what I did. I was too ashamed to say that I needed a toothbrush.”

Now a mother herself, Leopold wants to help children transitioning into foster care through a donation drive to provide them with luggage and basic toiletries.

Leopold is the chairwoman for the donation drive that continues through Temple Emanu-El Mitzvah Day on May 1.

Like Leopold, many children who are removed from their homes for foster care couldn’t have anticipated the move and don’t have time to pack their belongings as a result.

“A lot of times, they just grab their stuff in a rush, so they usually just have garbage bags,” Leopold said.

In some situations, pending cases involving parents make it impossible for the children to contact them to arrange for their things to be brought to them.

For her first attempt at a donation drive, Leopold set a goal of collecting 80 pieces of luggage — and has already collected more than 100 gently used carry-on suitcases, duffel bags and backpacks. The luggage drive is part of the larger event of Mitzvah Day at Temple Emanu-El, in which members of the congregation complete a variety of service projects.

The luggage and toiletries will be collected and packaged May 1 to be delivered to the Safe Children Coalition, which works under the leadership of the Sarasota Family YMCA to assist abused and neglected children and their families.

“The personal touch is that we’re including toiletries, toothbrushes and toothpaste in each one so that they can just pick one out and call it their own,” Leopold said.

Through projects for their May 1 Mitzvah Day, members have set up donation drives for the following items: n Children’s books to be donated to local schools n School supplies for Title 1 schools n Diapers for Baby Basics and Children First n Nonperishable food for All Faiths Food Bank n Nail polish and cosmetics for Everyday Blessings n Tennis balls for Honor Animal Sanctuary n Luggage, backpacks, duffel bags and toiletries for foster children

ompeting in two of track’s fastest races, the 100-and 200-meter dashes, a slow start could spell disaster.

That is, unless you’re Riverview High sophomore sprinter Aliyah Cunningham, in which case you just rely on your kick to carry you to the finish line.

She’s won 10 individual races this season, and in each of those races, she came out of the starting blocks lagging behind.

“She’s been blessed with a lot of fast-twitch muscle,” Riverview coach Michael Harvey said.

Cunningham has never been one to get much power off the blocks, forcing her to exert more energy down the stretch.

“I start extremely slow,” Cunningham said. “I always start behind, but I have a lot of pick-up speed, so even when I start down, I’m good to go.”

A season ago, Cunningham was seeded third in 100 at the Class 4A-Region 2 meet and on the verge of becoming the lone freshman to go to states in the event.

That is, until she got so caught up in getting off to a fast start that she had her first false start. Since then, she has used that experience as a learning tool.

“I’m trying to find the right balance between when the sound of the gun hits me and being really cautious at the same time,” Cunningham said.

The reigning Sarasota County champion in both the 100 and 200, Cunningham is now gearing up for the postseason and a possible run into the state tournament.

To do so, Cunningham will first have to get past Lakewood Ranch junior Sophia Falco, who finished fourth in last year’s Class 3A state

Cunningham’s personal best is 12.19.

The two are expected to meet on the track for the first time in the Class 4A-District 8 meet April 20, at Booker High.

Cunningham plans to use the opportunity to see how fast she really is.

“I’ve never set a personal record when I’m ahead,” Cunningham said. “I don’t have that killer instinct. If I’m in front, I won’t go as fast. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

Growing up, Cunningham would spend family reunions racing her cousins, all of whom wanted to see if they could take her down at her great-greatgrandmother’s home in Alabama.

When she wasn’t racing her cousins, Cunningham was competing against another member of the family: the family’s pit bull, who would race out from his spot under the deck and chase her around the yard.

She joined her first track club in fourth grade, finishing second in the 100 at an AAU meet in Tallahassee.

With natural speed and a lack of endurance, Cunningham focused on the 100 and 200, along with the 4x100 meter relay.

Now, Cunningham prefers the 100, but her coaches and teammates agree the 200 is actually her signature race.

The 200 also happens to be the signature race of her idol, Olympic champion sprinter Allyson Felix.

Cunningham watches videos of Felix’s races, analyzing the different phases of her race, her drive and her position at certain points on the track.

Doing so, Cunningham has learned the importance of driving through the finish line even when her body is telling her to coast the final 5 meters.

“Now I always run through the end even though I’m super tired and have no endurance,” Cunningham said.

Riverview was in last place during the 4x100, at last year’s regional meet when Cunningham, who ran the anchor leg, received the baton with fewer than 13 seconds to make up ground.

“I just told myself I have to pick it up,” Cunningham said. “I passed one girl, and I looked to the next and said, ‘OK, now I have to break her down.’”

Cunningham picked off four girls down the stretch, propelling the Rams to a fourth-place finish by one-hundredth of a second and a berth in the state meet. She also helped Riverview set a new school record in the event with a time of 48.99 seconds.

Cunningham hopes to hold all of Riverview’s sprinting school records and land a college scholarship. As for the thought of following her idol to the Olympics?

“That’s so scary,” Cunningham said. “If I’m able and fast enough to go then that would be great, but that feels like such a big thing.”

Riverview’s No. 1 doubles team of Antoine Sanchez and Finn Anderson helped rally the Rams to their seventh-consecutive district crown with a victory versus St. Petersburg High.

A week later, Riverview’s No. 2 doubles team of Brandon Lup and Gabriel von Kessel bounced back from a set down to not only win the match but also clinch a berth in the Class 4A state tournament, which began April 11.

At state semifinals, the Rams overcame a 2-0 hole to win their last four singles matches to top Olympia 4-3 and advanced to the championship match against Weston Cypress Bay. The end result wasn’t quite what the Rams, who fell 4-0, were hoping for. But when you walk away with six silver medals and a rather large state runnerup trophy to bring back home to Sarasota, it’s nothing short of positive.

n more than one occasion, the Riverview High boys tennis team’s postseason run came down to a pair of matches the Rams rarely have an opportunity to practice.

While Rams coach Holly Holton stresses the importance of doubles play and how, more often than not, it can be the deciding match, the Rams aren’t able to practice on a routine basis due to conflicting schedules.

Luckily for Holton, in high school tennis, coaching is allowed throughout the match, which she believes contributed to the Rams’ overall success.

“The boys are great to coach, and they listen and make the correction,” Holton said.

Their ability to learn from their mistakes while remaining focused at the same time helped carry the Rams to district and regional titles before eventually posting a Class 4A state runnerup finish April 12, at Sanlando Park, in Altamonte Springs.

This year’s players are talented at singles and doubles, and they all enjoy playing both.

Doubles is faster and can be more aggressive at the net, at times, but ultimately it’s all about personal preference and landing in your comfort zone.

sold-out crowd of more than 300 filled the left field seating pavilion at Ed Smith Stadium Saturday evening for Jazz in the Ballpark.

The event was the first of its kind in a partnership between the Jazz Club of Sarasota and the Baltimore Orioles that will bring a series of Arts in the Ballpark performances to the stadium.

The first concert was hosted by the Jazz Club of Sarasota for fans of Frank Sinatra to explore his musical career and collaborations with jazz greats like pianist Count Basie.

The 17-piece Sarasota Jazz Project Big Band performed Sinatra favorites, such as “Come Fly With Me,” under the direction of co-founder and tenor saxophonist George McLain. Jazz soloist and Sarasota native Lisanne Lyons performed alongside the jazz band for select numbers.
