Busking on the bayfront On Sunday afternoon, visitors to Bayfront Park enjoyed the sounds of water lapping at the seawall mixed with the music from nine musicians playing everything from ukuleles to a saxophone. Although the musicians had a tip bucket brimming with bills, they won’t see a dime. Instead, they donate it all to the Child Protection Center. The gig on Feb. 27 was the first for the group, named the Sarasota Buskers, since the pandemic began. The group of 16 buskers began in 2019 and have raised more than $4,000. Bill Shepherd, pictured above with Karen Shepherd, said they’re looking for gigs and play for free to gather donations. “We’ll go just about anywhere,” he said. To reserve them, check out the Sarasota Buskers Facebook page.

Characters on the run Early visitors to Siesta Key took in a fairly unexpected sight on March. 2. Shelley the Turtle, the Petunia and Cali cats from Cat Depot, Floody the Frog from Sarasota County, Rocky D. Bull from the University of South Florida, the Chik-Fil-A cow and many other mascots joined in a frenetic race across the Siesta Key sands. It wasn’t your everyday sight, and it wasn’t for any normal reason, either. Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium hosted the race to promote its upcoming 36th Annual Run for the Turtles race at Siesta Key on April 2. Shelley the Turtle and Gilly the Shark from Mote Marine raced their best, but Rocky D. Bull took home the first-place trophy.
