St. Thomas More Catholic Church welcomed its new pastor this week, the Rev. Joseph Clifford. Monday was his first day at the helm of the church after the Rev. Don Henry retired. Originally ordained in October 1989, Clifford comes to St. Thomas More from St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Fort Myers, where he served as pastor for 14 years. Prior to St. Columbkille, Clifford served at the St. Martha and Incarnation Catholic churches in Sarasota and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bradenton. “Father Clifford’s reputation is a warm, kind, gentle and holy priest who loves his priesthood,” Henry said in a release.

Despite a crowd of more than 70 and more than 50 letters petitioning the county, residents of Silver Oaks in Palmer Ranch failed to persuade the Sarasota County Planning Commission to support their request for a thicker buffer between their neighborhood and an incoming development. The development, 103 acres at the south end of Palmer Ranch’s current boundaries and south of Silver Oaks, will be home to 170 single-family houses developed by Taylor Morrison if the rezone petition is approved.
