Shark Lady supports Shark Lady The legacy of the Shark Lady lives on even outside of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium. And founder Dr. Eugenie “Shark Lady” Clark still inspires support to the science and research institution — this time with a drink named after her.

Gecko’s Hospitality Group gives back to Mote with its blue Shark Lady, which features blue curacao and a gummy shark on top. The drink can be found at all of Gecko’s restaurants, including Longboat Key’s own Dry Dock. Each time someone enjoys a Shark Lady, Gecko’s donates $1 to Mote.

This year, the donation totaled $13,189 and was presented by owners Mike Gowen and Mike Quillen to Mote CEO Michael Crosby, center.

Gecko’s has donated more than $30,000 to Mote since 2018, when Gecko executive Anne Rollings came up with the idea as a way to support Mote’s red tide research.

Peace and love on Siesta Key If you caught a massive peace symbol adorning the beach on Siesta Key, we regret to inform you that it wasn’t made by the elements alone.

Rather, it’s a tradition started by two friends who have looked to spread peace and love to their neighbors.

Robin Barker and Tori Catan recently collected seaweed, sticks and other beach refuse to put together the massive peace sign on Crescent Beach.

It’s a yearly tradition for the pair to make beach art, and the duo decided peace would be this year’s theme. They hope the message could resonate with others in this time.

“Spreading peace and love is so important and the easiest thing in the world to come by,” Barker said in an email.

Tamiami Trail hotel sells for $8 million

The Baymont by Wyndham Hotel in Sarasota has been sold.

The property was bought by The Tamiami Trail Trust, which paid $8 million for the 99-room hotel at 1425 S. Tamiami Trail.

The hotel, on 2.2 acres, is less than 6 miles from Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport and close to several tourist destinations, including Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and The Ringling.

Jag Grewal, a partner at Ian Black Real Estate in Sarasota, said in a statement announcing the sale that the tourism industry is heating up in the city and that the purchase was a good opportunity.

“We may see hospitality supply in our area tighten soon, as the cost of new construction continues to escalate due to labor shortages and supply chain problems,” he said.

ith several previously announced new flights beginning service in early 2022, Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport again set a monthly passenger-traffic record in February, airport officials said.

In the 28 days of February, 340,465 passengers traveled through SRQ, an increase of 113% from the 2021 total of 159,772. It’s the highest February total ever recorded at the airport.

Hartford, Connecticut, in January, and Allegiant Air launched its new flights to Akron-Canton, Ohio, and Appleton, Wisconsin, in early March.

Breeze Airways last week announced plans to begin flying to Hartford, Connecticut, in June.

In 2018, six airlines served 12 destinations from SRQ, airport President and CEO Fred Piccolo said. Now, 11 airlines serve 53 destinations, he said in a release.

“All this growth could not have

happened without the support of the community and our airline partners,” Piccolo said. “We are so grateful and appreciative for all this new air service and the low fares and convenient travel options it brings.”

According to the airport, Allegiant Air offers the most destinations from Sarasota at 29, though some flights are seasonal. Southwest is second at 18, and American is third with six.

A green development situated between North Siesta and Oyster Bay in Sarasota recently announced that all homes have been sold.

Vertical Design+Build, a Sarasotabased custom homebuilder, made the announcement regarding Granada Park.

The area was originally planned to be a high-density residential development, but that plan changed when it was rezoned. Now, it’s home to 25 houses with price points that range between $1 million and $1.4 million. The project is expected to be complete by December.

The property will feature homes under the gold standard set by the National Green Building Standard, as well as being 100% Florida Green Building Coalition certified under both the development and home standards, according to a statement.

FGBC is a nonprofit focusing on promoting environmental, economic and social benefits sustainability.

The development is gated, with single-family homes similar to town homes. The community is targeted to those relocating to the area.

Cigar shop lights fire under downtown debate Discussion of store and lounge at First Street and Lemon Avenue again raises questions about city’s core.

downtown redevelopment proposal that drew controversy last summer did so again last week when owners of a cigar bar and retail store sought approval from the city’s Planning and Zoning Board to convert a vacant storefront into a new business.

And as it did in August, discussion of the projoject brought into focus a difference of opinion on the nature of downtown.

Although the board approved Corona Cigar Co.’s site plan and a request for a major conditional use permit at First Street and Lemon Avenue, the question of what downtown should be remained open.

City commissioners are expected to vote on the proposal on Monday.

Board member Dan Clermont, voting with the board’s majority in the 4-1 decision, said the city’s business core should ultimately be many things to many people.

“Worldwide, downtowns are a city’s living room, and there you will find all kinds of activities,” he said in explaining his vote in support of the new business. “There are different things people enjoy and experience and ones people don’t like. But it doesn’t mean we should ban them.”

The clear issue with Corona Cigar Co.’s plan had nothing to do with activities indoors, which would include retail sales of cigars alongside a lounge that would allow cigar smoking and serve food and alcoholic drinks under the auspices of a liquor license.

DISSENTING VOTE

What did concern at least one board member and prompted his dissenting vote was smoke from a proposed but not yet approved outdoor area with tables and chairs arranged in outdoor-cafe style.

Although included in the business’s site plan, the outdoor cafe permit would be considered administratively at a later date, meaning the matter would not again come before an elected or appointed group.

Board member Damien Blumetti, who voted against the site plan and major conditional use permit, said the outdoor smoke was something he could not support.

“I don’t think that’s the image, whether you think it’s high-end or not, we want downtown,” he said.

It’s an issue that’s arisen before in the context of downtown and activities that could run afoul of either residents of the area or visitors, such as those who might come downtown to experience the weekend farmers market, art shows or the like.

At a community workshop on Aug. 18, downtown residents challenged Corona Cigar Co. owner Jeff Borysiewicz’s assertion that the next store in his chain would be a valuable addition.

Some questioned the local clientele, saying there was no market for high-end cigars and whiskey in Sarasota, and others said there were already too many bars and drinking establishments downtown. Supporters said it would be a good fit.

Although two members of the public signed up to speak at the Planning and Zoning meeting last week, none were present do so.

Board members received a presentation from Borysiewicz and his team and heard from the property owner, Lou Donato, who supported the Corona Cigar Co. proposal.

Donato said the store on the site of the former Sur La Table kitchensupply store satisfies his goal for a mix of tenants among his downtown properties. He also said that customers of the now-closed business had often objected to the number of homeless people around the Sarasota County Area Transit bus terminal across the street, making finding a new tenant more difficult than elsewhere downtown.

Borysiewicz said his company has been praised in all its locations in the Orlando and Tampa Bay areas

as classy and high-end. He said his tried-and-true business model includes outdoor seating but no live music, karaoke performances or DJs. “This will be the place in Sarasota where people come together, congregate and talk, and enjoy a cigar with a cocktail,” he said. “This is an experience.”

Borysiewicz said his landlords have welcomed his business in all the locations, and customers are appreciative of his offerings. He said smoke outdoors has never been a problem, even in the case of his downtown Orlando store, which is in close proximity to a movie theater complex, condominiums and a decades-in-business fur dealer.

“Look what’s next to us. It’s a bus terminal,” he said of the location at 22 N. Lemon Ave. “Does the bus terminal cause people not to want to eat dinner at the Italian restaurant across the street from us? It doesn’t.

There is enough distance in the air. It hasn’t been a problem for us.”

Blumetti said he supported the idea of the store and indoor cigar lounge but not the outdoor effects of the smoke.

“Inside, great, you can control the environment; you can control the air.

It’s my decision whether I want to go in there or not,” he said. “Walking downtown with my children and my wife and I, who don’t smoke, have to pass by that, I think is a major concern not only for me but for other people in this community.”

n Discussion of a proposed amphitheater structure in the center of St. Armands Circle. The item was requested by Mayor Erik Arroyo and business operator Tom Leonard, owner of The Shore restaurant. The idea surfaced in July during a St. Armands Circle Business Improvement District meeting. At the time, the BID board agreed to let Leonard take the lead on refining the amphitheater concept for future consideration. n Consideration of an agreement between the city and Sarasota Performing Arts Center Inc. for planning, financing, construction, governance and operation of a new performing arts center to replace the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. n Consideration of a plan to rename the dog park in Gillespie Park for Dale Orlando, a city resident who pushed for the establishment of the park feature.

Sarasota Police are investigating as homicides the deaths of two Sarasota women whose bodies were found near water nine blocks apart on North Tamiami Trail over the course of 13 days.

The identities of the women were not released under Florida’s victim’s rights laws, and interim Police Chief Rex Troche said at a news conference last week it’s not immediately known if the two women knew each other or had someone else in common.

In both cases, the bodies were found alongside areas connected to Sarasota Bay. In the latest case, the body of a 59-year-old woman was discovered just before 4 p.m. March 10 near Whitaker Bayou, in the 1900 block of Tamiami Trail.

Around 5 p.m. on Feb. 25, the body of a 48-year-old woman was found near the Centennial Park boat ramps in the 1000 block of Tamiami Trail.

“Obviously, our main concern, one, is that this doesn’t occur again, that’s our main concern,” Troche said. “Obviously this is a top priority of our agency to make sure we get this killer, or killers, before anything happens again.”

Troche said it was too early in the investigation to draw comparisons between the two cases.

Circumstances related to how the bodies were found, potential weapons, times of death and other factors were not released.

“There are certain facts in our investigation we don’t want to give out that may hinder further investigation,” Troche said.

Troche said there have been six homicides in the city in 2022, all of which have resulted in arrests.

Battie also said it was important to understand that the complaints were about noise in the urban core of Sarasota, adding that as the city develops, it is important to maintain Sarasota’s status as a destination for entertainment businesses.

Resident John McQuiston has lived in Sarasota for 10 years and said the noise levels from restaurants, bars and events have been unacceptable.

McQuiston provided an example of an instance in which he felt compelled to call the police.

A reggae music festival at the Gator Club last year that was supposed to end at midnight continued after that time – as did the noise.

“The event was supposed to end at midnight, but the music continued, so I called the police at 12:15,”

McQuiston said.

“The sound was the equivalent of having your television on as loud as it can go, with a higher bass level. It was impossible to sleep. I’ve been to a Led Zeppelin concert, and it wasn’t as loud as what was coming from the Gator Club that evening.”

A Sarasota resident with similar concerns compiled a list of the 75 noisiest areas of Sarasota based on SPD report data.

The Gator Club, located on Main Street near Lemon Avenue, was 13th on that list, receiving 29 noise complaint reports.

Another area on Main Street closer to the western end topped the list with 119 noise complaint reports since 2019.

While the downtown area was one of the noisiest one the list, resident Shantel Norman said it is important to allow music in the city.

“I sing a lot here in Sarasota. Music means a lot to me,” Norman said. “I do a lot of events, and we put on the reggae block party at the Gator Club.

A lot of these same people came out and enjoyed the music without a complaint. The police have come to enforce the music, but they don’t know where to enforce it at.

“I have kids here, and I want them to enjoy Sarasota. We want our kids to live here with a vibrant life with culture and music. I meet people from all over the world that want to move here because of the music, the bars and the arts. It means a lot to me.”

ity commissioners held a public hearing on noise issues last week, prompting a renewed debate between between nearby residents and those who enjoy downtown festivities through entertainment businesses and music.

Commissioners decided that they wanted to further evaluate the current sound standards before making any changes to protocol.

Mayor Erik Arroyo said more time is needed before a change could be made, but he believes a solution agreeable to both sides is possible.

“I believe we can find a happy median,” Arroyo said. “I don’t think we can do that right now, but we can come back and maybe have a special meeting. But we don’t have all the information. Our city attorney should speak with SPD so we can craft a policy that makes sense for everyone.”

Most of the commissioners agreed that general noise, such as music in vehicles, should be limited and has been seen as a nuisance.

How to enforce that, however, was not resolved by the commissioners.

The current sound ordinance limits music audible outside of a business to 60 decibels, the equivalent of a normal conversation.

Commissioner Hagen Brody said he would like to understand what that sounds like before considering changes in either direction.

“Either we tighten regulations or loosen them,” Brody said. “It’s a lay person’s opinion to say what’s too loud. I would like to know what 60 decibels sounds like. I know SPD has the equipment, but do most people know what 60 decibels is?”

Vice Mayor Kyle Battie said the issue would best be resolved if businesses knew beforehand what the sound limits were. He said the

Veterans enjoy retreat on Siesta Key Beach

ozens of military veterans gathered on Siesta Key Beach last weekend for Gratitude America’s Military Support Retreat. It was the second retreat in Sarasota that allowed veterans to reconnect with their closest friends through outdoor recreation.

Except in December, Gratitude America holds a four-day retreat monthly at a different location. The retreats were formerly reserved for post-9/11 veterans but were opened to all combat veterans this year.

“It’s an immersive retreat for combat veterans from all eras to come with their support person,” said Chris Duke, program director of Gratitude America. “Typically, it’s a spouse, but whoever their closest person is, they come here to reconnect with them and themselves.”

Veterans who participated in the retreat enjoyed music, food and conversation Friday night, just as the sun set on Siesta Key. Mike Cosentino, a resident on the Key, prepared dinner for participants, just as he did for last year’s retreat.

Once participants arrived for the retreat, all other expenses were paid

by Gratitude America. Lodging, food and recreation activities were paid for because the goal of Gratitude America has been to assist veterans with their traumatic experiences.

“For the veterans, it is specifically for them to learn the concepts of post-traumatic growth,” Duke said.

“They learn how to use the struggles they’ve encountered, not just in combat but in everyday life, to find strength in those things. We want

Lewis Jordan worked in the airline industry for 49 years before founding Gratitude America in 2011. He once served as president and chief operating officer of Flying Tigers, the world’s largest international cargo and military transport airline.

Once he retired, Jordan and his wife, Joni, wanted to give back to their country and chose veterans’ trauma recovery due to combat stories from Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as an alarming suicide rate among veterans.

According to 2019 data from the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs, more than 6,000 veterans die by suicide each year, and 42% of post-9/11 veterans said their mental health was negatively affected after returning from deployment.

Early in 2020, Joni Jordan died after a long battle with cancer. Since then, Gratitude America has continued its efforts with helping veterans in her honor, according to a statement on the Gratitude America website.

“We owe our military, our veterans, their families and families of the fallen a debt we can never fully repay,” the late Jordan was quoted in a Gratitude America statement. “The American people want to help, but in some cases just don’t know how.

Many of these heroes face physical and emotional wounds, unemployment and other hardships.”

Although Gratitude America has full-time employees, it has relied heavily on volunteers and donations.

IT’S BIDEN’S INFLATION

We have focused on inflation multiple times, starting with our first warning April 22, 2021: “The insidious tax: inflation … Food prices are rising 8% to 10% a month for restaurants. Don’t blame the suppliers.

Blame the Washington looters for printing too much money.”

And we’ll continue to harp on inflation because it is one of the most evil, debilitating taxes of all. Most Americans don’t see it coming, and when it takes hold, it especially saps the living standards of the poor and middle class. They are helpless. They can do nothing to stop it. That’s where we are now.

Second, we’ll continue to harp on inflation with the hope — albeit even in a small way — of educating taxpayers on who is causing it, whom to blame for their declining standard of living and what it will take to stop it. Our leaders are spinning lies to protect themselves.

Putin didn’t cause inflation. This is not “Putin’s inflation.” Joe Biden and Congress caused skyrocketing consumer prices.

Please, do not buy their lying.

Even Larry Summers, Democratic Party loyalist, former secretary of the Treasury and respected economist, said last week, “Joe Biden was wrong” about inflation.

If you are at all familiar with the real causes of inflation, you know that its roots are always — always — a result of government actions.

Even back in February 2021, James Gwartney, respected economics professor at Florida State University, forewarned: “It is a virtual certainty that inflation will rise, perhaps to double-digit levels … Inflation is going to be the big story of the post-pandemic economy. Get ready for an inflationary ride.”

What? He is sick of being blamed for inflation, skyrocketing gasoline and food prices?

Joe Biden apparently has no idea (or doesn’t care) how so many of us Americans are sick of his lying, denying, incompetence and stupidity. We’re sick of his and his colleagues’ destroying the value of our money, impoverishing millions of Americans with their spending and borrowing and besmirching the United States throughout the world.

What a colossal embarrassment to the American people.

The list of incompetent and stupid decisions is long and well known (take your pick: Afghanistan, southern border, Build Back Dumber, ruining energy independence, rushing to stand by Jussie Smollett, on and on). But the most galling ones now are inflation and his handling of Vladimir Putin — separate subjects but now inextricable in their effects on the American people.

Life in the United States is going to get economically worse for the remainder of 2022, with the U.S. economy more than likely falling into recession in 2023 before the effects of inflation can come to a halt. Crime, a consequence of inflation, will rise even more. And to borrow a Biden phrase, “make no mistake,” the United States and NATO are in a war with Putin, not with guns and soldiers (just yet), but an economic war that is making everyone but the leaders — the common men and women of the United States and Russia — suffer.

Gwartney simply pointed out what economists have noted for centuries: Inflation is when your government increases the money supply. When Congress sent out COVID relief, the money supply increased 70% in a 12-month period, from $4 trillion to $6.8 trillion, the largest increase in history.

Famed Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises explained in the 1960s what an increase like that means: “If you are increasing the quantity of money, and you are not increasing the quantity of things which can be bought with money, you are only increasing the prices which can be paid for them.”

That’s exactly what occurred.

Biden and the Democrats flooded the market with dollars while turning off the spigots that produce domestic oil. Voila! — too much money chasing too little gas.

They flooded the Americans with relief money while COVID lockdowns ratcheted back the supply of consumer goods. Gwartney predicted that when people were no longer cooped up by COVID, they would spend “big time.”

You’ve seen the out-of-state license plates. Those people chose not to fly and instead drove here.

They increased the demand for gas just when Biden and the John Kerry Green Monsters ratcheted back domestic production.

So don’t buy the spin that we’re seeing rising gas prices because we no longer import Russian oil. As economist Alan Reynolds explained: “Formally ending the small and shrinking U.S. imports of Russian crude will not be noticeably harmful to the U.S. because that vanishing trickle of Russian crude can easily be replaced with oil from Canada, Mexico, Latin America or the Middle East… .” Or, God forbid, with increased production at home.

And yet, Biden, Pelosi, et al, are working the lapdogs in the media to claim innocence. It’s stunning.

Either they are such diabolical liars or they really are that stupid and incompetent not to understand and acknowledge they are unequivocally responsible for runaway price increases in everything.

What are they proposing to stop it? Of course, more government spending, more borrowing, more printing of declining-in-value dollars. Projections for the next fiscal year show a federal budget deficit of $1.5 trillion.

“If the practice persists of covering government deficits with the issue of notes (printing money), then the day will come without fail, sooner or later, when the monetary systems of those nations pursuing this course will break down completely.” So wrote von Mises in 1923.

There are two proven ways to stop this inflation. Von Mises: “The printing presses must be shut down in time, because a dreadful catastrophe awaits if their operations go on to the end.” Here’s a telltale warning sign of that coming catastrophe: Consumers begin buying wildly and hoarding because of the rapid declining value of their dollars.

The second way, which must occur in tandem with stopping the presses, is increased interest rates — the Paul Volcker prescription of the early 1980s.

Don’t expect bold action from the left-leaning Federal Reserve Bank to do either sufficiently. Its governors are clearly far too influenced by equity and inclusion policies and the fate of Democrats at the midterm elections to take the economy where it ultimately and inevitably will end up: in a recession.

PUTIN AND SANCTIONS

Of course, exacerbating the effects of inflation on Americans are Putin and his invasion of Ukraine.

“Make no mistake,” as Biden would say, the United States and NATO are indeed directly at war with Putin and Russia. While the U.S. and NATO allies might not — as yet — have troops on the ground or pilots fighting in the air, they are at war — a war of economic sanctions and retaliations.

When we and the U.K. ban the importing of Russian oil, wheat, fertilizer, vodka and other products; when we cut Russia out of the world’s monetary transfer system or quit selling our own Americanmade products to Russians, we’re making the lives of Russian people unpleasant. Take that, Putin!

Or so we think.

The objective is to make the common people of the sanctioned nation so economically uncomfortable and painful that they rise up and force out the leaders in charge.

Good luck with that. How is that working for us in North Korea, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba?

What’s more, history also has shown that economic sanctions trigger another response in the affected nation: nationalism (See “The Great Delusion: Liberal Dreams and International Realities,” by John Mearsheimer). Native residents whose families have lived in the country for generations tend to stand up for the motherland.

At the same time, Putin, of course, doesn’t just sit in a corner and cry over the sanctions. He

goes around the world and sells all his country’s products to other nations that haven’t taken sides, predictably supplanting what they might buy from the United States and likely at more favorable prices.

Think of China, Mexico and Brazil, for example. Back at you, Biden!

Now flip the coin. U.S. sanctions on Russian products and the banning of doing business with Russian people and businesses inflict pain on common Americans — all the employees and businesses involved in importing Russian goods and selling them in the U.S.; all the employees and businesses involved in exporting American goods and services to Russians.

In the scheme of international trade, Russian imports and exports with the United States aren’t all that big — 26th among all nations; $26 billion in Russian imports to the U.S. and $6.3 billion in exports to Russia.

But as the sanctions war escalates, more and more Americans will feel the effects. Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi won’t feel the effects.

You will.

That’s what you get in any war — ordinary, innocent people suffer because of the egos and/or incompetence of their leaders.

Sure, none of us wants to see U.S. service members pay the ultimate price. None of us ever wants war.

We know the cry: What if Putin unleashes nuclear warheads?

Wouldn’t we rather have an economic sanctions war than a war with nuclear bombs?

We’d rather have neither.

But we know this: Unfortunately, the bigger war that is inflicting damage on all Americans — inflation — is going to take an increasingly devastating toll on ordinary Americans, especially as Biden, et al, continue to blame Vladimir Putin and deny their role in the economic destruction of Americans.

We’re sick of this.

al response has been uplifting for Ukrainians to see, but Ukrainians have also made major sacrifices as well. She described how her Ukrainian family has prepared food for neighboring cities, which gets transported by a small truck, sometimes amid gunfire.

“I have a good friend there who is in the Army Reserve. He’s a very strong man,” Danilovets said. “But he told me even he is very scared.”

The seminar also included a discussion about the refugee process for Ukrainians.

Typically, the United States has permitted fewer than 200,000 refugees each year to enter the country.

Several speakers asked those in attendance to speak with their U.S. representatives about their desire to help displaced Ukrainians.

During the open discussion, some of the speakers suggested that the United States should allow more refugees into the country due to the conflict in Ukraine.

ACROSS THE BRIDGE

The Ukrainian community on Longboat Key might be hurting, but its trying to put its grief into donating, educating and speaking up to help the people of Ukraine.

Oksana Bashuk Hepburn, who has lived in Longboat Key for 30 years, said her friends are holding demonstrations, talking to reporters and calling colleagues in Ukraine every day. The social and political will to help has to stay strong, she said. “I think we know how to help, and we’re good at it, but the bottom line is to stop Putin,” Hepburn said. “The big players need to step in because our help is wonderful, but it’s not the way to stop it.” They’re directing friends where to donate, and there are plenty of places. One pressing need is equipment for soldiers, she said, and the need for humanitarian aid and medical supplies is dire as well.

seminar last week at Selby Public Library examined ways Sarasotaarea citizens can help Ukrainians during the war with Russia. Those directly affected by the invasion also had a chance to voice their struggles.

According to Wojtek Sawa, a Sarasota visual artist of Polish descent who coordinated the seminar, more than 2 million people have evacuated Ukraine, while many civilians have stayed to fight for their country.

Donations were collected last week for both humanitarian and military efforts in Ukraine.

“This is the largest crisis for humanity since World War II,” Sawa said. “We want to broaden both humanitarian and military aid. I also have an online opportunity called Ukraine Exchange. It is for refugees to be offered services and for people who would like to provide those services.”

Multiple foundations made presentations to the capacity crowd at the Selby Public Library Auditorium.

In addition to monetary donations, a list of less-conventional items such as medical equipment, tactical gear and protective supplies was provided to those in attendance.

The Ukrainian American Coordinating Council (UACC) has created a delivery system that assists with shipping difficulties of donated supplies. The UACC collects items and has partnered with Meest, a Europe-

Sarasota County faces high water demand during dry season, the Public Utilities Department says.

Sarasota County’s Public Utilities Department has asked the community to conserve water as the area has entered its dry season and water demand has remained high.

Rather than a shortage of water, distributing it properly and at a normal pressure could become a challenge. The best way to combat possible water distribution issues is to limit the use of water outdoors, said Public Utilities Director Mike Mylett.

“Right now we are seeing an increase in water demand. People are asking to use a whole lot of water,” Mylett said. “Our dry season starts in March and goes through May. Between now and then, people are using a lot of water, especially with irrigation.”

Even in the typically dry season, rainfall is below normal. Less than 2 inches have fallen in 2022, below the 3.27-inch average.

The best way to assist with water distribution is to use less water when watering lawns and plants. But those who don’t use water for irrigation can also help by using water conservation practices.

“The biggest bang for the dollar is to limit outdoor water usage — that’s where we see our larger demand this time of year,” Mylett said. “The others thing you can do is to change your water fixtures to low-flow fixtures.

That means your toilets and your showers, those types of things.”

Reducing shower time from 10 to five minutes can conserve 7,300 gallons of water annually.

Fixing a leaky toilet was another tip presented by the Public Utilities Department. Toilet leaks can be tested by placing a dye tablet or food coloring in the toilet tank. If there is color in the bowl after 30 minutes, the toilet could have a leak.

akewood Ranch’s Dan and DeAnna Sparkes have been waiting months for the Five-O Donut Co. to open at University Town Center.

They were more than happy to wait in line at the grand opening March 12.

“We’ve been asking forever for one to be in Lakewood Ranch,” Dan Sparkes said, adding that their love

of the donut shop began five years ago. “It’s almost in Lakewood Ranch.

It would be great if it was on Main Street, but this is fine.”

Customers sat on lawn chairs outside Five-O Donut Co. starting at 6 a.m., anticipating its 8 a.m. opening.

“You know you’ve made it when they have lawn chairs,” said Christine Nordstrom, the owner of FiveO Donut Co. Sarasota’s Margaret and Philip DuPerry love the variety of donuts Five-O Donut Co. has to offer.

“They’re works of art,” Margaret DuPerry said.

Five-O Donut Co. offers between 24 and 30 types of donuts each week, with three to five special donuts that change every weekend. From glazed to powdered jelly to s’mores and

croissant donuts, Nordstrom said, there’s a donut for everyone.

Margaret DuPerry’s favorite donut is the maple bacon donut, while Philip DuPerry’s favorite is the croissant donut.

During the holidays, Five-O Donut Co. offers donuts to match the holiday. For example, there’s a Lucky Charms donut for St. Patrick’s Day. Five-O Donut Co. wasn’t the only business celebrating a grand opening March 12 at UTC. The Paper Store, a specialty gift business, welcomed a group of about 40 customers waiting outside its doors at 9 a.m. March 12.

“It’s so exciting,” said Vanessa Frederick, the district manager for the store. “We are thrilled to have all of the customers here. They love

The property at 1313 Westway Drive in Lido Shores Estates, listed by Roger Pettingell of Coldwell Banker Global Luxury, was on the market for 11 days and originally priced at $11,995,000. Public records of the sale have not yet been recorded electronically. Pettingell also represented the buyer.

The 7,336-square-foot property overlooks New Pass and includes a new boat dock. It has six bedrooms, seven full baths and two half baths.

But beyond the numbers is the style of the two-story property.

It’s a fixture of My Hometown Fest: a large map of the United States where people can place a star on their hometown.

The hope is to get 3,000 stars or more on that map March 26 after My Hometown Fest ran a far smaller event in 2021 — My Hometown Jam — due to the pandemic.

This year, it is returning to the music festival that people have come to expect at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota.

My Hometown Fest gives those who attend a chance to share memories of their roots with live music, food and craft beverages for the $35 admission price. The event benefits the Sertoma Club of Greater Sarasota, which provides therapy to those who face speech, language and hearing challenges.

“We get stars all over that map,” said Tim Self, a member of the Sertoma Club of Greater Sarasota. “The whole idea of My Hometown Fest is that you’re likely to experience the flavors, be it food or beverage, that is reminiscent of your hometown.”

In January 2020, the nonprofit purchased a larger facility (2750 Stickney Point Road, Sarasota) to call home.

“Our new permanent home is almost paid for, but larger events like (My Hometown Fest) raise more money and certainly help us serve more kids, and that’s what we’re all about,” Self said.

The festival will feature between 20 and 25 restaurants that will provide samples of food and more than 50 craft beverage vendors.

Unlike past years when the festival was focused primarily on craft beer, My Hometown Fest is expanding to

HOPPING THE FENCE 10:10 p.m., 1000 block of Hampton Road Suspicious person: A man noticed someone he did not recognize on his front lawn. He asked the person why he was there, but instead of saying anything the person silently took a few steps toward him. Security footage showed the person jumping the man’s fence and looking inside his vehicle. Once police arrived, they searched for the man and reviewed the footage. They discovered that multiple vehicles in the area had recently been burglarized. Police were unable to find the man but reported they were able to get fingerprints from the fence.

SKETCHY FLYERS 12:50 p.m., 300 block of Washington Drive Suspicious incident: Police responded to a call about suspicious flyers spread across the ground near residences. The flyers, which made comments about members of the Biden Administration, were inside of plastic bags along with corn kernels.

Police were unable to identify who created and distributed the flyers but passed the information along to a police detective.

DRIFTING BOAT 7:20 p.m., 1000 block of Tamiami Trail Suspicious incident: A man called police over what he thought was an unoccupied boat drifting along the shoreline. When police arrived, they noticed the boat was anchored to the shore with a man sitting on it.

Police asked if the man needed assistance, and he declined. The police left the scene without any further incident.

SUNDAY, MARCH 13

TURN IT DOWN 11:50 p.m., 3700 block of Amherst Avenue Noise disturbance: A woman called police about loud music coming from her neighbor’s apartment.

When police arrived, they confirmed a loud bass sound that made the residence vibrate. Police attempted to contact the resident for 15 minutes but could not be heard over the music. Police finally made contact and asked a man to turn down his music. He agreed to avoid any further conflict.

TIME TO BOUNCE BACK At 6-2 and coming off a tough loss, Riverview’s baseball team gears up for playoff-grade opponents.

t was a drubbing.

But it might be exactly what the Riverview High baseball team needed.

The Rams (6-2) started the season playing strong, smart ball, winning a lot of close games in the process, but Tuesday’s home game against IMG Academy Gray (6-2) was never close.

The Ascenders scored six off starting senior pitcher Nicholas Polk in 1 1/3 innings. They added two more off senior reliever Nicholas Garcia in two innings.

Junior Landon Gierhart held the Ascenders scoreless for 1 2/3 innings, but they added eight more runs in the sixth off two more relievers.

Riverview’s offense kept fighting, planting a run in the second inning and four in the sixth to make the final score 16-5. The Rams were not happy after the game; their other 2022 loss was a 1-0 defeat against Inspiration Academy. They came into the IMG game ranked ahead of the Ascenders in MaxPreps’ state rankings (17th and 41st, respectively).

The loss will hurt for a night, but Rams Coach Jeremy Schmidt said the pain could help in the long run.

“The reason I schedule teams like this is because they are the quality of teams we need to beat in the playoffs,” Schmidt said. “When you have a night like this, you take the positives, and the rest you can flush and move on.

“We got some guys in there that needed the work. We got our bull-

pen guys some innings. And they (IMG) have tough pitching, so seeing our hitters battle was good, scoring those runs in the (sixth) inning.”

In 2021, the Rams finished 19-10 and reached the Class 7A regional semifinals before losing 7-0 to Durant High, an eventual Final Four team. The Rams lost significant pieces from that team to graduation, including pitcher Karson Ligon, who is now a freshman at Miami, and catcher Cole Griffith.

Schmidt was confident the program would overcome the losses.

The Rams’ pitching staff has been bolstered by the return of senior Brandon Viera, who missed last season while recovering from Tommy John-type surgery. In 2022, Viera has been sparkling, allowing one run while striking out 14 and walking four over three appearances.

Senior pitcher Christopher “Pip” Smalley has been even better. In 12 innings, Smalley has allowed no earned runs (two total runs) while striking out 16 hitters and walking four. Senior pitcher Austin Harford has also proven himself capable of providing solid innings, holding a 1.56 ERA over five appearances.

While the Rams’ bullpen has a few things to figure out, having three capable seniors to rely on is a plus.

Riverview’s lineup has also been hot to start the year. Smalley has

been leading the way there, too, posting a .500 average with four doubles, three triples and 10 RBI. Senior Dylan Wilds has contributed a .381 average and seven RBI. The one thing the Rams have lacked offensively is a power streak; Riverview has just one home run, an extrainnings shot by senior Chris Barr in the team’s 7-5 win against Manatee High on March 8.

But that’s OK. The Rams are built for playing — and winning — close games. Four of the team’s six wins have been by three runs or fewer. It’s a skill the team has learned by playing challenging teams night after night.

That learning will continue as the team travels to Miami for games against American Heritage High on March 18 and Doral Academy on March 19. The tough road doesn’t stop there. The Rams will play in the IMG National Classic March 29-April 1, then against the topranked IMG National team on April 7.

“I know we can handle it,” Schmidt said. “It’s going to prepare us. I want our guys fighting. When the playoffs come around you’re going to be facing good pitching every night. You have to be ready for that. I’m challenging them right now, and even though the score (against IMG) is not what we want, it only makes us better.”

B.J. Ivey was named the boys basketball coach at Sarasota High on March 10.

Three coaching moves could change the fortunes of programs at Sarasota and Cardinal Mooney high schools.

T

he high school basketball landscape was changed by big pieces of news in the last few weeks.

It started with the announcement on Feb. 16 that Sarasota High boys Coach Mike Fields was stepping down after four years. The Sailors, 5-20 last season, are a peculiar program, always holding a lot of raw athleticism but never quite stretching that talent to its potential, for one reason or another. They have not had a winning record since the 2013-2014 season. But they’re a

large program with opportunity there for the right coach to turn them into a powerhouse.

The Sailors administration believes it has found that coach.

On March 10, the school announced that B.J. Ivey would be its new boys basketball coach. Ivey’s name is one that area fans should know well. He has spent the last two seasons at The Out-of-Door Academy, but before that, he led the Riverview High boys and girls teams to new heights.

Over 13 seasons —10 with the boys, three with the girls — Ivey accumulated 270 wins and eight district titles. He led the 2015-2016 Rams to an appearance in the state final and helped develop NCAA Division I players A.J. Caldwell (Tennessee-Chattanooga; more on him in a minute) and Brion Whitley (Southern).

In other words, the guy knows what he’s doing. By his own admission, his time coaching ODA didn’t turn into as many wins as he would have liked, but he was also facing challenges at the private school that he will not face at Sarasota High, like the majority of his roster focusing as much on other sports as they did on basketball. That makes it difficult to schedule offseason practices and build chemistry.

Yes, some kids at Sarasota play multiple sports, too, but not so many that it will heavily impact the team’s schedule.

Returning to the Sailors from last season — assuming no one transfers, which is maybe not a safe assumption these day — is freshman Sean Collier, a 6-foot-2 forward who was impressive in his first year of high school basketball, leading the team in points multiple

times. Steady forward Jaden Guerrero will be a senior next season and provide leadership. There are pieces here for Ivey to work with. Whether it’s next year or beyond, do not be surprised if the Sailors become a force under Ivey’s guidance.

Two other basketball coaching changes are worth nothing, and one of them also involves Sarasota High.

The Sailors hired former Saint Stephen’s Episcopal girls Coach David Gaulman as their girls coach.

Taking over for Kevin Corwin, Gaulman had much success at Saint Stephen’s, going 44-21 in three seasons with a Final Four trip in 20192020. He’s also well-known on the travel ball scene, where he’s worked on skill development with players such as Cardinal Mooney star Olivia Davis, as well as Sarasota’s Ava Sims and Shay Farley.

Sarasota was young in 2021-2022, with five sophomores and three freshman on the varsity roster. That inexperience led to a 7-18 record, but it also means that the Sailors will come in with a lot more experience next season. There is a nucleus for success there, and I am excited to see what Gaulman does with it.

The other girls basketball change was the most surprising. Cardinal Mooney Coach Rico Antonio announced he would step down March 10. Antonio went 74-28 over four seasons and took the Cougars to back-to-back state championship game appearances the last two seasons. Antonio has not announced his next move or respond to an interview request.

But more intriguingly, whomever Mooney hires as its next girls basketball coach will inherit a gold mine (again, assuming there are no transfers). The Cougars are expected to return 11 of 14 players from last year’s roster, including Davis, junior forward Jordyn Byrd and freshman Kali Barrett, who became the team’s most-complete player down the stretch. There is more than enough talent there to get back to another state championship game. Even after next season, when David and Byrd and other contributors are scheduled to graduate, the team will have a rock-solid founda-

tion. This is a program that is set up to win for a while.

All three coaching moves have the potential to shake up the landscape of high school basketball in the area. While we wait to see Mooney’s choice to fill Antonio’s spot, I can say for sure that it will be fascinating to see how it all shakes out. It’s a shame we have to wait so long to see these new-look programs in action, but, hey, it will give us something to look forward to come winter.

One other basketball-related piece of news I wanted to mention.

I said last week that Riverview alum A.J. Caldwell and his TennesseeChattanooga teammates were headed to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Southern Conference Tournament in dramatic fashion, but at the time, we didn’t know their opponent. We do now.

The Mocs are a No. 13 seed and will play No. 4 seed Illinois at 6:50 p.m.

Friday in Pittsburgh. The game can be seen on TNT. It’s a tough draw for the Mocs.

Illinois has junior Kofi Cockburn, one of the best big men in the country (21 points a game, 10.6 rebounds a game), and well, the Mocs don’t.

But if they can get him into foul trouble — something that happens with some regularity — they have a chance. They’re a 7.5-point underdog, and that feels about right. It’s not impossible to imagine them winning, but they’ll need to play extremely well to do it.

Whatever happens, it is always cool to see someone from Sarasota playing on national television, on the biggest stage college sports has to offer.

When did you start playing lacrosse?

I started when I was 7 years old. I lived in State College, Pennsylvania, at the time. I was bored of T-ball, and my neighbors had a lacrosse net.

All my cousins played lacrosse, so I knew about it. I started playing and loved it. But then I moved to just outside Charleston, South Carolina, and they don’t have much lacrosse there, so I didn’t play in middle school. I moved here about a year ago and started playing again. This is my first year of high school lacrosse.

What is the appeal to you?

I like that lacrosse is a team sport and you can grow with your teammates and become best friends, but you can also have personal goals and moments out there.

It wasn’t that tough. At first I was a little frustrated, but I’m a committed person. I played lot of wall ball and my brother (Duke Bergstrom), who is a really talented eighth grader, practiced with me. That helped get me back to speed.

What is your favorite food?

My favorite food is cheeseburgers. I just get them with meat and cheese and lettuce.

YOUR NEIGHBORS Para-athletes compete in triathlon T here was a lot more at stake last weekend at Nathan Benderson Park than finishing places, athletic performance or even overall event success.

Hundreds of athletes took part in the Sarasota-Bradenton Triathlon, typically a grueling test of running, cycling and swimming in a variety of classes.

Though rough weather prompted a change in plans for some of the racers on Saturday, the field of elite para-athletes did swim, run and cycle their way through the park.

“Mother Nature can really challenge us in multiple ways,” said race director Craig Hanken. “It’s stressful and takes a lot of patience on everyone’s part, especially for the athletes who have to rework their thoughts and plans.”

But for a group of select para-athletes, a competition held Friday was an important milestone. Already on hand for the main event, the smaller group of 20 men and women competed in a test of an idea organizers hope will one day take off.

The mixed-team triathlon took to the course with 16 Americans on four teams and a four-member team of Canadians. It was the first time such a race was held on American soil.

Standings weren’t kept, other than for data purposes, and times weren’t announced, but pride was on the line to finish first in the historic event. Race organizers hope to see the mixed-team event rise in significance and be featured in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Hanken said.

Additional test races will be held throughout 2022 in the United States, with the goal of a world championship mixedteam event in 2024, a prerequisite for the Olympics.

Mixed-teams consist of two men and two women who compete in a scaled-down version of a triathlon designed to last about 20 minutes. With some in wheelchairs and others with prosthetics, the idea is to form teams with a variety of abilities, with the fastest team to finish winning.

Organizers and athletes said the test went well.

During the main event, about 96 elite para-athletes swam, ran and cycled throughout the park.

In other categories, some athletes required tethered guides to run, swim and cycle alongside.

The race featured a 750-meter swim, a 18.3K bike race and a 5K run.

Richard Murray of the Netherands was the elite men’s winner with an overall time of 29 minutes, 14 seconds. Kristen Kasper, who ran for Georgetown’s cross-country team for five years, was the top elite women’s finisher with a time of 32:47.

Karen Gordon Mills at RCLA lecture

usiness expert Karen Mills made her way to Sarasota for the latest in the Ringling College Library Association lecture series at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on March 15.

Mills, who served as administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration from 2009 to 2013 and works as a senior fellow at the Harvard Business School, met hundreds of attendees at the Van Wezel for morning and afternoon

lecture presentations. Mills spoke about her time working with the Obama Administration and gave her thoughts on what regulation measures work for small businesses.

Sarasota Chamber of Commerce President Heather Kasten and Manatee Chamber of Commerce President Jacki Dezelski interviewed Mills to round out the presentation.

Sarasota is full of natural beauty, so it stands to reason that many of its residents enjoy cultivating and admiring it.

Many of those residents tend to their gardens, putting plenty of love

and care into their flowers, plants and botanical life throughout the year.

They’re private spaces but, with the help of the Sarasota Garden Club, visitors are able to appreciate those gardens once a year.

The Sarasota Garden Club has been in operation for decades and manages several outreach programs, promote civic upkeep and tend to the gardens at its home, 1131 Boulevard of the Arts.

Club member CJ Danna became involved with the group after volunteering at The Ringling and meeting members of the group. She attended

a meeting and shortly after was a part of the group. Danna has served as president and a number of other roles with the club but as of late handles marketing.

The annual garden tour is a complex event that requires the club’s committee — made up of about 10 people — sifting through submissions and deciding upon a final list of gardens, Danna said.

“It takes almost a year to find the gardens,” Danna said. “They’re usually master gardeners or people that have been gardening with us for a while that choose. It takes a long time.”

The club receives submissions to be part of the tour each year and club gardeners often scope out local gardens on their own. Danna said the gardeners are drawn to Floridafriendly and tropical gardens as well as those that are nurtured by the homeowners themselves.

Sometimes the submissions catch the committee’s eye, sometimes they don’t.

“Some people want their gardens to be part of the tour, but you look at them and they’re just not tour-worthy,” Danna said. “(The committee) is particular about which gardens to select.”

After meeting at the garden club to organize and pick up box lunches, the tour participants drive to each house on the tour on their own. Danna says committee members try to find houses close to one another to save on driving time.

It’s a steady amount of work, but at the end of the day it’s fun.

“It’s just fun,” Danna said. “We tell people if it’s not fun, don’t be on the committee.”

Sarasota County Schools announced Jamie Hannon has become Southside Elementary School’s principal. After working as principal on an interim basis, Hannon will take over on a permanent basis effective immediately, according to a school district release.

Hannon received her bachelor’s degree in visual disabilities and her master’s degree in special education from Florida State. She also received a master’s degree in educational leadership from the American College of Education.

“I am humbled to serve as the new principal of Southside Elementary School,” Hannon said in a news release. “We have had a great year so far, and I am truly excited to see our community grow even closer as we finish out the remaining days of school. I look forward to all the memories and milestones ahead with the amazing Southside family.”

Hannon worked at an assistant level at three schools before becoming interim principal at Southside Elementary.

Foundation receives grant for students

Suncoast Credit Union has awarded $75,000 to the Education Foundation of Sarasota County to support its work to prepare students for life after high school.

The Education Foundation has developed and runs Student Success Centers at four high schools, most recently opening one in the fall of 2021 at Suncoast Polytechnical High School. It also staffs a center at LaunchPad4U, its community resource center open to all students.

Five receive Monroe scholarships Vianna Kim Huynh, Carmella Catalfino, Sanna Hildebrand, Milan Augustine and Israel Valle are the 2022 recipients of the Andrew Monroe Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Riverview High students received their scholarships, which ranged from $250 to $2,000, at a March 1 ceremony at the Hyatt Regency, Sarasota.

Following Monroe’s death in a 2011 car crash, the Monroe family set up the scholarship fund in his memory to assist RHS soccer athletes for a legacy of high education – an education he was unable to complete.

To qualify, each applicant submitted an essay explaining how they emulate the traits and characteristics that defined Monroe. Money raised from a 5K race in Siesta Key Jan. 9 helped fund the scholarships.

Southside Elementary gets new principal

To meet the growing need of Teen Court of Sarasota, the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation recently awarded the organization a $125,000 grant to expand its services and hire additional case managers to support children.

In 2021, the organization provided peer-on-peer court sessions, group classes focused on the negative impact of drugs and alcohol, mentorship and life skills training to more than 700 youth.

Completion of a Teen Court referral means the young person will not be arrested or expelled from school.

“We believe in teens helping teens, encouraging young people to help each other through a time of difficulty in their lives,” Executive Director Heather Todd said in a press release. “The quality provided through our case managers, intervention and prevention services continues to empower our students through experimental learning and peer on peer mentorship.”
