City officials gather for the development’s grand opening.
New space in Newtown Affordable housing can be hard to find. It became a little easier on Feb. 1, when city officials and supporters came together to celebrate the Sarasota Housing Authority’s grand opening of an affordable housing community for seniors in Newtown. The new Amaryllis Park Place development — at 1912 N. Orange Ave. — is designed for seniors and has 84 units. U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, Sarasota Mayor Erik Arroyo, Vice Mayor Kyle Battie, Sarasota commissioners and other supporters gathered Tuesday morning for the development’s ribbon cutting. Speaking to the audience, Arroyo, Buchanan and other officials noted the difficulty of finding affordable housing.

Helping with health Breast Health Sarasota provides diagnostic screenings and breast cancer prevention programs, and those medical services aren’t always cheap. Fortunately, they’ve had assistance as of late. The Founders Golf Club Women’s Golf Association hosted its “Golf For The Cure” charity tournament to raise money for the nonprofit on Jan. 27. Between entry fees, luncheon costs and varying levels of sponsorship, the tournament raised $23,000 for the health organization. Founders Golf Club staff said the event’s final tally was one of the highest numbers ever raised by the tournament.
