Residents continue to root for tree protection As the city writes new regulations for protecting trees, a group of citizens fights to make sure the current rules don’t get broken, too.

Sarasota Cribs: The Floating Cottage The Floating Cottage, or Floridian 42, made its Sarasota debut this week when Allan Bazzy, co-owner of Bradenton Beach Marina, anchored it near his home on Boulevard of the Arts to test out motors. “I kind of feel like Columbus,” Bazzy said. Designed as a vacation rental, it has a fireplace, large-screened TV, kitchen, queen-size bed and washer/ dryer.

Responding to outcry from activists concerned about increased construction activity, the city has been working for more than a year to improve its tree protection regulations. Arlington Park resident Nathan Wilson is one of those activists working to preserve trees in his neighborhood and throughout the city. With new homebuilding on the rise, he says, tree protection can easily become a low priority for developers or contractors. Still, he’s not satisfied with city staff’s effort to create new code provisions pertaining to tree protection, although he thinks the SEE PAGE 10A
