Sheriff’s horses step down
The proposed primary entrance to Selby Gardens property is now on Mound Street, a revision from the initial proposal in response to traffic concerns.
City OKs Selby’s request Nat Kaemmerer
After years of service to Sarasota, two horses with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office are calling it a career. Valor, 28, and Major, 19, both served the department’s Mounted Patrol Unit here in Sarasota County and at special occasions and assignments. Valor worked the Super Bowl and the Republican National Convention in Tampa and in Mississippi during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Major also worked the RNC and Florida Classic college football game in Orlando and was appreciated by his unit for his dressage skills. The two horses will live out their retirements with Ron White and Robin Ruhnke at the Sarasota Polo Club.

Fighting off termites
The history of Philippi Crest’s clubhouse is in danger of being eaten. Wood for the 1920s structure was imported from Maine, but now termites are attacking and the community is putting up a fight. Philippi Crest Club volunteers recently launched a “Terminate the Termites” campaign to raise about $2,100 to tent the structure and be rid of the pests.
