Phillippi students deliver help for Haiti After Phillippi Shores Elementary first-grader Madeline Perrotta saw the damage in Haiti from Hurricane Matthew on the news, she wanted to help.

After a three-and-a-half hour meeting Tuesday, the Public Art Committee selected a local artist’s proposal as its favored choice to place in the center of a roundabout at Orange Avenue and Ringling Boulevard.

The board unanimously endorsed Jorge Blanco’s submission, entitled BRAVO!, as the best of three finalists after hearing presentations from the artists. Although Blanco’s initial design was shared as a black-andwhite sketch, he presented a color model of the sculpture that included a white base and blue, red and black accents.

Blanco said the piece was his effort to reflect the city’s vibrant arts scene.

“My inspiration is my beautiful city,” Blanco said. “I’m trying to express with this piece the cultural energy of the city of Sarasota.”

The committee’s recommendation will now go to the City Commission for final approval.

Sarasota Military Academy lawsuit heads to court This week will mark the first hearing in a lawsuit filed by Sarasota Military Academy’s former prep school director against his former employer.

In the lawsuit filed in March in the 12th Judicial Circuit Court, former SMA Prep Head of School Col. Phillip Eddy alleged the academy’s Board of Directors and staff in 2014 lured him away from a lucrative job in Kuwait with false promises of a pay bump and long-term position.

The board terminated Eddy’s contract the following year, according to minutes of a July 15 meeting.

“In general, we don’t like to comment on the substantive issues underlying litigation,” said Bentley & Bruning P.A. attorney David Wallace, who is representing SMA. “We are actively defending the case on behalf of the Sarasota Military Academy, and we’re generally confident in a positive outcome.”

Businesses speak out on

HOMELESSNESS Three years after hiring a consultant to develop a strategy to address regional homelessness, there’s a growing anxiety downtown that no progress is being made.

hen a tenant at his Second Street property cited issues related to homelessness as a primary reason for moving out, Joe McElmeel decided to channel his frustration into a plea for help.

On Oct. 26, McElmeel sent an email to city commissioners. In it, he describes regular encounters with human waste and stories from employees scared to come into work. He volunteers to help address the issue, but he tells the city leaders that their action is desperately needed.

“I moved my residence and business to Sarasota in 2001, bought a home, hired 14 employees, bought an office building and remodeled it because I believed Sarasota was paradise after having vacationed here for years,” McElmeel wrote. “But it’s now becoming a hell.”

McElmeel isn’t alone. As the city and county continue to pursue their options for addressing homelessness in the region, there is a growing anxiety among downtown merchants and property owners about a lack of tangible progress. Although both governments claim to have taken major steps during the past three years, it’s hard for many to see the effects those steps have had.

“To see people leave downtown or not visit downtown because of the issues they find themselves facing, it’s really frustrating,” said Daniel Volz, a member of the Downtown Improvement District. “Finding a solution to that is going to be more than just pumping money into a program. It’s going to take a serious, hands-on approach by the powers that be.”

Many merchants use the same framing device to make their criticisms regarding homelessness.

There are those who are homeless as a matter of circumstance, and those people are deserving of community support.

But there is another group labeled as “vagrants.” These people are seen as gaming the system, embracing homelessness as a lifestyle and aggressively panhandling with great success. These are the people who are largely responsible for the disruptive and intimidating behavior, they say.

From hiring private security to installing portable toilets to banning public feedings, there’s no shortage of possible solutions volunteered by downtown business owners. But they’re not the decision-makers responsible for addressing homelessness. From their perspective, city and county leaders have failed to do their job.

going on for 10 years,” McElmeel said. “We’re no further ahead today than we were 10 years ago.”

TAKING ACTION

One recurring narrative is that the Sarasota Police Department, despite its best efforts, is unable to properly enforce laws when it comes to the homeless population. SPD Capt. Kevin Stiff calls that an “urban legend.”

“The police department is not having a problem doing enforcement,” Stiff said. “There is nothing we are not doing that we could do if there were a shelter.”

Among city officials concentrating on homelessness, there is a belief progress is being made.

Stiff said the Salvation Army and Jewish Family & Children’s Service of the Suncoast housed more than 500 individuals last year. City Manager Tom Barwin praised the SPD’s homeless outreach teams, which include two dedicated caseworkers.

Stiff said he’s seen significant progress over the last three years, and cautioned against a desire to see the SPD arrest the homeless problem away.

“I understand some people think they’re going to wake up and the homeless issue is going to

be solved in Sarasota,” Stiff said.

“That’s not going to happen.”

Barwin is happy with information the city has cultivated over the past three years, but he acknowledges some shortcomings. He said Sarasota could more effectively address the health needs of the region’s chronically homeless — a responsibility he said fell at the foot of state and county governments.

“What we’ve learned is we’re experiencing a localized version of a very significant national problem,” Barwin said. “That national problem is rooted in the shutting down of a majority of our mental health facilities in this country over the past 35 years.”

He uses the impact on emergency services to drive home his point. In 2015, 56 individuals had 10 or more visits to Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s emergency room. Combined, those 56 individuals had a total of 981 ER visits.

That came with an average cost of $1,358 per visit, and $23,796 per individual.

Until the city asked for those figures, Barwin said, there wasn’t a good grasp on how big a problem the chronically homeless posed.

“If we treat the cases that need to be treated — the truly ill indi-

viduals who are in a full blown state of crisis most of the time — I’m prepared to almost guarantee you the riff-raff will go away,” Barwin said. “They blend in and they hide.”

On Tuesday, the City Commission heard a presentation from officials with the Kearney Center, a Tallahassee facility that offers comprehensive emergency services for the homeless. Those officials said it took more than two years to actually construct their facility, which would give little comfort to downtown businesses seeking immediate relief from their problems.

Some merchants are pessimistic about the prospect of making significant progress on this issue.

Others, like Volz, are eager to explore any opportunity to possibly chip away at problems affecting downtown.

Eventually, he hopes, a collective determination will lead to significant gains in addressing the issue.

“It’s easy to point to government, to the gridlock or the bureaucratic process we have, but it’s not really one person or group’s fault,” Volz said. “The biggest issue is getting everybody on board and educating people.”

ec. 31 will mark the Siesta Key Village Association’s last day of operation, for the group’s board of directors voted Tuesday to dissolve the organization into the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce.

The SKVA, created in the late ’60s, has advocated for the interests of businesses in the Siesta Key Village commercial district. The group has pushed for improvement projects such as adding wayfinding signs along I-75 and installing a trolley line on Siesta Key. When the merger is official, current SKVA members will be grandfathered as members of the chamber. In addition, $40,000 of the SKVA’s $70,000 budget will be transferred to the chamber’s general fund. The remaining $30,000 will be used for shortterm village projects that have not yet been identified.

On Tuesday, none of the group’s board members was mourning the end of the association.

The motion was unanimously approved, with most of those in

attendance expressing a belief the merger will be beneficial for both entities. “(We’re) enhancing both,” SKVA board member Kay Kouvatsos said. “We’re losing nothing.”

According to SKVA President and Chamber of Commerce Chairman Mark Smith, the chamber will adopt some SKVA’s procedures, such as holding public meetings.

As of now, chamber decisions are made in closed meetings.

Smith said the chamber will likely add quarterly public meetings to its schedule so the community can share its concerns with the organization.

“It’s not a secret society, so let’s open it up,” Smith said.

The chamber also plans to create a special business committee with representatives from the village and the southern commercial district near the Stickney Point bridge in an effort to address Siesta’s interests as a whole.

Smith anticipated the transition to a Siesta-wide operation would benefit village businesses.

“I don’t think the village needs the narrow focus as much as the broader exposure the chamber can offer,” Smith said.

However, Morton’s Siesta Market Manager Gary Wright believes there is value in having an organization focused specifically on the needs of the village.

“Competition is good,” Wright said. “I would say maybe they do need to stay apart so we get two

different looks at everything. It’s always good to get a point and counterpoint.”

On the other hand, Local Bean owner Zach Peavler thinks the merger makes sense, because both organizations are focused on marketing island businesses. Peavler is interested to see if the chamber will take on the politically vocal characteristic of SKVA, which has spoken out on county issues such as food truck regulations and parking prohibitions near the public beach.

“It will be interesting to see how the chamber handles that sort of activism,” he said.

The move to disband seemed to come quickly, with no public notice of the proposal until the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting was published in late October. However, according to SKVA board member Russell Matthes, co-owner of Daiquiri Deck, the organization began discussing the merger in 2008.

The conversation began shortly after the county passed an ordinance that dedicated funds from Siesta property taxes toward maintenance in the village. Prior to the ordinance, village upkeep accounted for a large portion of the association’s activities.

Smith estimates maintenance costs accounted for 85% of village expenditures at that time.

After the county began managing maintenance expenses, SKVA realized how much of its efforts were solely dedicated to upkeep.

The remaining activities, such as marketing and event planning, were often executed in partnership with the chamber.

“It was a real challenge and constant work to keep the village looking good,” Smith said. “That did directly help the businesses, but now we have evolved beyond that.”

stable place, Smith said coordination with the rest of the island would be beneficial for improving the overall image of Siesta Key. In fact, some south Siesta businesses feel efforts to bolster island businesses have focused mostly on the village.

“We have a lot of customers that have been coming back year after year, but there are still people who say, ‘Well, I didn’t know you were down here,’” said Lorene Williams, an employee of Things You Like souvenir shop.

Williams has been working at Things You Like for five years. She believes the lack of attention paid to the south Key is driven by a lack of organization.

Among south Siesta businesses, there’s some optimism the merger of SKVA and the Chamber of Commerce might bring more attention to their district. However, Crescent Club owner Julie Brown is skeptical that the merger will have a significant impact outside of the village.

“In the past, things have been geared toward the village,” Brown said. “I have never been a chamber member for that reason.”

For now, village leaders are expressing a desire to coordinate with their neighbors to the south. Matthes hopes the merger will allow events like the village Easter egg hunt to expand and include more South Siesta business owners.

“Instead of identifying a south village, a public beach and a north village, we can act as one,” Matthes said.

Brown said the merger may encourage her to enter into initial dialogue with the chamber, but she is going to wait and see.

“I think it’s a good idea — if it works,” Brown said.

Bayfront stakeholders prepare for next phase ROLL CALL

With a new group set to lead the redevelopment effort, others want to keep the focus on community needs.

During the planning process, Bayfront 20:20 will continue to function as a separate entity.

Asked to justify the makeup of the board, Klauber explained why no planning professionals were included, saying the organization is responsible for hiring a professional planning firm to develop a blueprint for redevelopment.

Kathy Kelley Ohlrich, chairwoman of the Coalition of City Neighborhood Associations, said residents and others involved

with Bayfront 20:20 would continue to pursue an active role in the planning process.

“I think it behooves us as 20:20 stakeholders to do more than eavesdrop on what this board is going to be doing,” she said. “We can’t get lost in the shuffle now.”

Looking for impartial decisionmakers, Klauber and other Bayfront 20:20 leaders turned to the region’s community foundations to develop a shortlist of board candidates. Those who agreed to take on the responsibility will adhere to the guiding principles approved by Sarasota Bayfront 20:20, Klauber said.

the direction of the community.

“I live in the downtown area and I have for maybe 25 years, so it’s my neighborhood,” said Cathy Layton, former chairwoman of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens board of directors. “I am a community advocate.”

As the planning organization attempts to complete its work over the next 18 months — at which point any proposal would be subject to city approval — the goal is to keep the entire community engaged.

“I don’t see them as taking over altogether, because they’re going to seek the resources available to them,” Ohlrich said. “I’m pretty confident and hopeful that this ends up being what we want.”

As Michael Klauber listed the board members of an organization that will spearhead a planning effort to revitalize the bayfront, he was effusive with praise for the newly assembled group.

Klauber, the leader of Sarasota Bayfront 20:20, has been pushing for a community-backed plan to redevelop 42 acres of city-owned property around the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall for nearly three years.

Now, the planning organization — a mix of former business executives and prominent community activists — represented a means to move from conceptual discussions to legitimate proposals for transforming the bayfront.

“These are people with great experience in making big decisions,” Klauber said.

At a Bayfront 20:20 stakeholders meeting Friday, there was some concern regarding the planning phase. Various organizations had been involved in the process from the beginning. What would happen when the power was turned over to a small group?

LEADERSHIP FOR OTHERS While many Americans lament public office seekers and their sycophants who are in it for themselves, here are four volunteer civic leaders contributing for the right reasons.

reater Sarasota is blessed with incredibly generous, philanthropic and civic-minded people. We could fill this entire page with names of unsung heroes and givers.

But rare is the occasion when they are given the credit they deserve.

Here are four volunteers who deserve recognition for their civic contributions and leadership: n Dr. Robert “Bob” Windom Wow, talk about a throwback to the days of the Southern gentleman. Dr. Bob was the epitome. Gracious. Good natured. Giving. Always concerned about the well-being of his community.

Dr. Windom died Oct. 21 at age 86.

While making his living as a physician, including stints as chief of staff at Sarasota Memorial and Doctors hospitals, he was equally dedicated to making the place he lived better.

One example: 55 years as an active member of the downtown Sarasota Kiwanis Club, a civic organization dedicated to helping children.

And what does it say about a man from little Sarasota whom Ronald Reagan tapped in 1986 to serve as assistant secretary of Health and Human Services, the highest position in government that is required to be filled by a physician? It says that whoever knew Dr. Bob respected him — for his knowledge, his serious concern for what was right and best for others and the community and his leadership.

In the annals of Sarasota history, when people think of role models for civic leadership, integrity and public conduct, Dr. “Bob” Windom should always be on that list. n Marty Rappaport As those on St. Armands Circle who have worked with him will tell you, no one has worked harder on behalf of Sarasota’s No. 1 retail and tourist center than Rappaport.

We made it through Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnson and the Civil War — tattered, discouraged, fearful of the future. But we went on to grow and prosper.

Surely we can make it through whatever and whoever are next.

The people of the United States are far bigger and better than any one individual in the White House.

But out of this travesty of the 2016 presidential election, let’s hope and pray that it serves as a lasting lesson to all current and future elected officials and office seekers: lifelong integrity, morality and propriety matter.

With the swearing in of every new elected officeholder, so help them God, they pledge their behavior in office to be that of role models of honesty and decency.

Sure, Rappaport had a self-interest to see St. Armands flourish. But instead of being a sideline complainer, Rappaport poured his heart, energy and persistence into making St. Armands Circle a better place for all — property owners, merchants, shoppers, residents and visitors.

The parking lot behind The Met; redesigned medians; new landscaping; the statues; and one day soon, a new parking garage. All of these physical enhancements are the result of Rappaport leading efforts among St. Armands property owners and merchants and Sarasota city officials.

district whose funds are earmarked for improvements. This was a huge achievement, given the disparate views of St. Armands property owners. Rappaport served until recently as its unpaid administrator and chair.

Deputy City Manager Marlon Brown praised Rappaport for the way he worked — always with an attitude of how the city and the improvement district could work together, not with demands of what the city could do for the Circle.

For sure, Rappaport can stand alongside the Circle’s founder, John Ringling, for his lasting contributions. n Michael Klauber and Drayton Saunders Most Sarasotans know these two names. Michael Klauber, proprietor of Michael’s On East restaurant.

Drayton Saunders, president of Michael Saunders & Co., the largest Sarasota-based real estate brokerage.

But for three years, these two business leaders have volunteered countless hours leading what probably is one of the most thankless efforts in civic involvement — steering, guiding, nudging, proselytizing and pleading for Bayfront 20:20. That’s the organization Klauber, Saunders and Virginia Haley, president of Visit Sarasota, created to figure out how to redevelop the city’s 42 acres of bayfront property surrounding the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center.

Believe us, this is no easy task.

Klauber and Saunders spearheaded meetings with nearly 50 cultural, civic, business and neighborhood organizations to engage them in creating a shared vision for the property. And if you know Sarasota, you know how difficult it is just to get two groups to go in the same direction.

But to their credit, Klauber and Saunders have persevered. And while they reached a big milestone recently that will shift responsibilities and the creation of a master plan to a nine-member board, you can be sure Klauber and Saunders will continue their commitment to see this historic project come to fruition. They’re believers. They both believe this is a once-in-a-half-century or oncein-a-century moment to create a landmark for which generations will be proud.

We share our admiration and thanks for the shining examples of leadership and civic contributions these four individuals have given to Sarasota.

drugs for pain relief but merely wants to get a high, or as a temporary escape from life’s problems, so what? That’s still constitutionally protected pursuit of happiness.

Supporters of bans on recreational drugs rely mainly on two arguments: The government must protect their kids, because they are too irresponsible/lazy/ incompetent to do the job; and drugs like marijuana can become a gateway to stronger, potentially deadly drugs.

And by the way, the war on drugs has caused more deaths, misery, gangs, decline of neighborhoods, etc. than users have.

In your Oct. 27 editorial, you lamented the country’s drift away from the Constitution and how bleak things look for future generations. You also mentioned the inalienable right to the pursuit of happiness in the Declaration of Independence.

If a person is suffering from excruciating pain from cancer or any other cause, don’t you think his desire to be pain-free qualifies as pursuit of happiness? If so, how do you justify advising readers to vote against legalizing medical marijuana?

Obviously, no one in your circle of family and friends has experienced that sort of pain; otherwise you wouldn’t be so indifferent/cavalier/callous about their suffering.

Here’s the real irony: In the present election, we are using a ballot question to amend the Florida Constitution to overturn an inherently unconstitutional statute. I challenge you to address that dichotomy in this week’s column.

Twenty-four other states already allow medical use of marijuana. And four of truly enlightened ones — Alaska, Washington, Oregon and Colorado — even allow recreational use. Those states understand what inalienable rights mean.

Even if someone isn’t using

We stated in our Oct. 13 editorial that we support legalizing medical marijuana at a greater level than what exists today.

We oppose Amendment 2 on the grounds that medical marijuana, specifically, should not become part of the Florida Constitution.

Beer, alcohol and cigarettes are not in the Constitution. Medical marijuana should be addressed statutorily.

he Sarasota County Charter Review Board has already denied a proposal to make the board an appointed body, and according to responses to the candidate questionnaires submitted to the Sarasota Observer, the majority of candidates for the board stand by that decision.

But, a crop of Democrats vying for the seats that usually lean Republican have said they have other changes in mind for what is usually dubbed the county’s “constitution.”

Twenty Florida counties are governed by local charters.

Sarasota’s Charter Review Board members have been elected since the county established its charter in 1971.

Of Florida’s 20 charter counties only Sarasota’s Charter Review Board is elected by the public. The other 19 counties rely on an internal appointment process.

Despite the majority of Florida charter counties opting for appointment rather than election, earlier this year, Sarasota’s Charter Review Board unanimously decided to continue allowing the

public to elect board members.

“If it’s not broken, do not fix it,” Charter Review Board member Anthony Sawyer said during the board’s discussion of the issue. “The Charter Review Board is not broken, so it does not need to be fixed.”

Not only did Sawyer maintain his position, according to his candidate questionnaire, but many other candidates share his opinion, including his District 1 opponent Arlene Sweeting.

“It gives citizens a voice in how county government operates and gives them a meaningful way to participate,” Sweeting said.

Although the issue has been settled for now, it seems the majority of candidates would stand by the current board’s decision in the future.

“Sarasota County government works,” said District 4 candidate Jody Hudgins said. “I do not see a compelling reason at this time to change how we do things.”

Still, nearly half of the candidates vying for seats on the board — four of the Democratic challengers — say they would come to the governing body with immediate plans to change the county’s charter.

When the Downtown Improvement District was looking for a way to honor the first responders who work in the heart of the city, board member Mark Kauffman turned to Eric Massey.

Massey, a commercial real estate agent, had a good working relationship with Kauffman, a prolific downtown developer. But beyond the professional connection, Massey agreed to dedicate his personal time to this endeavor because he strongly believed in the cause.

“A lot of what they do is to help the community,” Massey said.

“You need to give back. You need to thank them.”

Two months later, a program is rounding into shape. On Tuesday, the DID approved a $20,000 budget for what’s being called First Responders Appreciation Month, scheduled for this January.

In addition to producing DIDsponsored flags and buttons for downtown businesses to display throughout the month, the group is working on getting other people involved in the effort. More than half of the budget would go

toward “Lunch on the DID” — two free lunch coupons for the 162 police officers and 50 EMS/fire personnel in the downtown area.

After contacting a few major downtown restaurants, Massey said the owners were eager to participate.

“I have gotten a great response from the restaurants,” Massey said. “They seem very thankful to have these guys around, monitoring what’s going on downtown.”

The appreciation month also includes a letter-writing campaign. Officials at Sarasota Military Academy and Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences have agreed to participate.

More than anything, the organizers hope to assure Sarasota’s first responders that the community is deeply supportive of the work they do.

“Police officers and first responders are usually only dealing with people when they’re going through the most trauma of their life or they’re in the most trouble of their life,” Massey said.

“Neither is really conducive to stopping and saying thank you.

When they get these letters from kids reminding them why they’re doing this, I think it’s invaluable.”

Residents rally to protect Rosemary trees As a builder moves ahead with plans for a 62-unit condo project on Fourth Street, residents are trying to preserve large trees in a rapidly developing neighborhood.

t the back of Wednesday’s Development Review Committee meeting, a group of about 10 residents sat quietly, all dressed in green.

Although the public isn’t allowed to speak at DRC meetings, the residents were attempting to make a statement. The group is concerned about a project proposed for 1329 Fourth St., a 62-unit condo that is part of the ongoing residential building boom in the Rosemary District.

At the DRC meeting, city staff

reviewed preliminary plans for the project. During the discussion, city arborist Mark Miller said there had been no decision on the proposed removal of two ficus trees on the edge of the property, but that a report on those trees would be available shortly.

Those trees, 60 inches in diameter and located at the corner of Fourth Street and Cocoanut Avenue, represent much-valued green space in a rapidly developing neighborhood. The idea of removing those canopy trees to facilitate a five-story building is hard for the residents to handle.

“The public is going to be stuck

with cement building, cement sidewalks, cement concrete,” said Donna Moffitt after Wednesday’s meeting. “We’re going to be a cement ghetto. If that’s what they want for the Rosemary District, that’s what they’re going to get.”

As the Rosemary District builds out, stakeholders have targeted parks and other green space as a future need. The city has focused on writing more stringent tree protection regulations, but that wouldn’t prevent a builder from removing diseased ficus trees as long as more trees are planted.

The plans for 1329 Fourth St. include the removal of 59 on-

site trees. The mitigation plans included planting 24 palm trees in a courtyard at the center of the development, though Miller questioned whether trees in planters would qualify for the mitigation effort.

Residents expressed concern that new palm trees would do little to make up for the loss of robust shade trees.

“No mitigation is going to replace the beauty of that canopy,” Jean Fleming said.

Residents also questioned another aspect of the project’s mitigation plan, which would place trees in Centennial Park — located more than half a mile from the project.

“Sometimes the closest park doesn’t have the room to accept trees,” Miller said. “Parks and rec has master planting plans, so it has to fit in with those.”

Once the city reviews an arborist’s report on the health of those trees — and if the site plan for 1329 Fourth St. is approved — the developer could be clear to remove the trees. Still, the treeloving group isn’t giving up, and they may soon have an opportunity to make their voice heard.

Sarasota Chief Planner Ryan Chapdelain encouraged the developer to hold a community workshop to go over the plans with residents. Architect Michael Halflants, who represented the developer Wednesday, said his team would be happy to do so.

The plans may ultimately prove difficult to stop, but the residents are going to take every chance they get to fight for preserving trees in downtown Sarasota.

“We need a balance between the built versus the green space,” Debora Ahmari said.

Atkins has just been asked about the Tornadoes’ 28-6 victory Sept. 30 over Bayshore, the team’s first win of the season and his first win as a head coach. He thinks for a second, then utters one word: “Disappointed.”

“We were the first team to let them score,” he says. “I did not want Bayshore to score. But I was happy for the kids because they were excited. They earned it.”

His disappointment after his first win shows that Atkins expects more from his players.

Booker’s football stadium, and he has memories of going to games with his father, former Sarasota Mayor Fredd Atkins. He said it’s a blessing to coach the team he watched on Friday nights and played for himself.

“I could hear the band and the announcer,” Atkins said. “I could smell it. I could feel it. My father, he was a Booker guy.”

The start of Atkins’ tenure as coach was challenging. The team lost its first two games under previous coach Recharde Goodwyn to Riverview and Sarasota by a combined score of 100-26. Four Booker players were involved in brawl at the end of the Sarasota game and ejected.

Goodwyn stepped down Sept.

6, and the school hired Atkins, a full-time social studies teacher at Sarasota, on an interim basis. He had 10 days to get a feel for the roster and implement changes before the team took on districtleading Hardee at home. They lost. Up next was a road game against then-undefeated Port Charlotte. Another loss.

Then, the turnaround began.

Booker played Bayshore and won 28-6. The Tornadoes did the same to DeSoto County, 42-6, and Lemon Bay, 30-15. Suddenly,

the Tornadoes were one win away from clinching a playoff spot.

On Oct. 28, the Tornadoes went up 15 points on Southeast in the first half before they “beat themselves by playing selfish football,” as Atkins said after the game. A blocked punt set up the Seminoles in great field position for an easy score, and Southeast’s gamewinning touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter deflected off the palms of a Booker defensive back. The Tornadoes lost 28-21.

Atkins isn’t satisfied with his first season at the helm.

“No, I’m not (happy), but we have made some strides,” he said.

Atkins graduated from Booker in 2004 as a big-time offensive guard recruit, holding scholarship offers from Florida State, Ohio State, LSU and Michigan, among other top programs. He ended up with the Seminoles.

After going through three offensive line coaches in three years, and injuries hindering his 2007 season, Atkins left FSU for Tennessee State, where he finished his college career.

Atkins said his goal while coaching is to have each player fulfill his potential and become the best he can be, whether that’s on the field, in the classroom or in the community. Accountability and discipline is a big difference between Atkins’ program and Booker programs of the past few years, according to Booker Athletic Director Philip Helmuth, who praised Atkins for increasing the morale of the team, which was low after the 0-4 start.

Senior linebacker and fullback Deron Davis agreed that Atkins has instilled more discipline into the program.

“The atmosphere changed, and people are grinding,” Davis said.

“A lot of kids here expect to go to college, so he keeps it at a college level.”

Talks about Atkins taking the position full-time are ongoing, but no decisions will be made until after the season.

Entrepreneur brings semi-pro basketball to Sarasota I f you’re a basketball fan, you’ll no doubt remember fondly names such as Julius “Dr. J” Irving, Dan “The Horse” Issel and George “Iceman” Gervin.

All three of those players found success in the NBA, but they got their start in the less popular American Basketball Association, which existed from 1967 until 1976, when the two leagues merged. Despite its short existence, the league left behind a substantial legacy. The league provided many kids around the United States with their first taste of professional basketball and spurred their love for the sport.

Andre Spivey was one of those kids. The Tampa Bay tech entrepreneur, originally from Indianapolis, grew up watching Pacers games while the team was still in the ABA. The league was resurrected in 2000 by two former ABA executives, and this year, Spivey decided to prove his love of the league by bringing an ABA franchise of his own to Sarasota.

Spivey said he’s always wanted to own his own sports team because of what a team can provide its home city.

“The way people in the city are affected by it, the way people get behind sports and how it gives them pride in their city is something I’ve always found interesting,” he said. “The way Cleveland feels right now. LeBron James winning a championship

lifted the city. All of a sudden, the Cleveland Indians believe they’re winners. That sense of pride and desire to win can be infectious. It makes the city feel different.”

Spivey also has a passion for creating opportunities for those stuck in tough circumstances. At age 11, he moved to the Lincoln Park neighborhood of San Diego, known colloquially as the “four corners of death” because of its high murder rates. Lots of kids from the area turned to sports to escape their surroundings.

Spivey was one of them; football legends Marcus Allen and Terrell Davis were two others.

Sarasota is no Lincoln Park, but Spivey wants to make sure kids and young adults in the area have a way to get off the streets and find success if they work hard.

The organization still needs to fill out its roster. Spivey could easily sign players from outside the country on half-season or one-year deals, like other ABA teams do, but instead, he wants players from Sarasota. He wants his team to care about the city it represents. Not only are local players more likely to stay with the team, but they’ll also have a deeper knowledge of the city and how its people operate. As Spivey said, the main goal is to give fans pride. Those interested in trying out for the team can find more information at manateebasketball.com.

There are a lot of other details to be worked out, too. Jerseys are in production. T-shirts, too.

Spivey isn’t sure where the team will play its home games, but he’s been holding tryouts at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex.

One thing the organization doesn’t need is a name: The team will be known as the Sarasota Manatee, another nod to local pride.

Despite the whirlwind of things that need to get done, the Manatee will begin playing road exhibition games this season.

The team’s first game is Dec. 4 against the Orlando Waves, with the game time to be determined.

The team will play a full slate of games starting next fall.

“If you believe in your dream, take a step toward it,” Spivey said.

Hershorin Schiff school celebrates ‘Challah-ween’

S

tudents, faculty and members of Sarasota’s Jewish community had their work cut out for them at Hershorin Schiff Community Day School’s first “Challah-ween” bake-off.

Tasters sampled 13 loaves of the special bread known as challah, which were donated by local grocery stores and

religious leaders.

Temple Emanu-El Assistant Rabbi Michael Shefrin was among the taste testers.

“I want my memory jogged with these challahs,” Shefrin said. “Challah is one of the quintessential Jewish foods. It’s reminds me of family, tradition and holiness.”

Challah is a doughy, braided bread typically eaten on the Sabbath and Jewish holidays.

Before the competition, students made their own challah. Melissa Werbow, of Temple Beth Sholom, said she used 50 pounds of flour to make 70

loaves of challah for children to take home.

“My husband, Rabbi (Michael) Werbow, is usually the one who makes the challah bread at our home,” Werbow said. “But now I can say that I have 70 loaves of challah under my belt.”

Rabbi Werbow’s challah-baking experience showed when he won first place in the bake off.

Students learned about the significance of challah during a Shabbat service.

The eighth annual celebration on Halloween night brought princesses, Ghostbusters, visitors from a galaxy far, far away and plenty of other characters to the Circle for a night of tricks and treats. Giving Hunger the Blues rocks Van Wezel

I

t was good vibes only during Jah Movement’s performance at Giving Hunger the Blues Sunday at Van Wezel Performing Arts Center.

The reggae band rocked the main stage in addition to Reverend Barry & Funktastic Soul, Twinkle & Rock Soul Radio, RJ Howson and Gumbo Boogie featuring Mark “Guitar” Miller.

The event, which benefited the Mayors Feed the Hungry Program, the Women’s Resource Center of Sarasota/Manatee County and the Generoso Foundation, included 20 performances on three stages.

This was the event’s first year on the Van Wezel grounds. Previously, the music festival was held on Hillview Street in Southside Village, but relocated this year after the city of Sarasota did not allow for the closure of Hillview Street.
