outhwest Airlines Co. has published initial flight schedules for SarasotaBradenton International Airport.

Sarasota-Bradenton service will begin Feb. 14, 2021, according to a news release.

Southwest will initially serve customers through four nonstop routes from the airport: Baltimore/

Washington, Chicago (Midway), Houston (Hobby) and Nashville. Tickets for the destinations are available now on Southwest.com.

s the City Commission discussed safety protocols for in-person meetings Nov. 16, Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch noted that state COVID-19 data showed that the presence of the coronavirus in the community had changed notably since late October.

“I just want to remind everybody that about two or three weeks ago, our positivity rate was half of what it is now,” AhearnKoch said. “The cases are on the rise.”

On Nov. 16, the average positivity rate for COVID-19 tests in Sarasota County during the previous week was 7.2%, nearly double the 3.8% positivity rate three weeks earlier. Rising positivity rates and an increase in testing has produced a spike in identified case volume. At the beginning of October, Sarasota County was averaging just more than 30 new cases daily. As of Monday, the county had reported an average of 176 new cases daily over the previous week.

Those numbers have caused concern but not panic for local health officials. On Nov. 18, Sarasota Memorial Hospital President and CEO David Verinder affirmed that cases and hospitalizations had increased locally over the past few weeks. He said the hospital felt prepared for the potential of another surge, but so far, the volume at SMH has remained manageable.

For now, Verinder stressed the importance of adhering to public health guidelines.

“We’re doing well, but we want to continue to reinforce — please wear a mask, please stay socially distanced, and please be aware that this is a very serious disease,” Verinder said in a video.

The messaging from Sarasota County and the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County is similar. In an email sent through a spokesperson, Sarasota County Emergency Services and the local Department of Health said “overall community spread” was the primary driver of increasing case numbers.

Although the email did not associate the increases with any specific behavior, officials said the data was cause for concern.

“While our numbers are not as high as some areas of the nation, there is still concern about increase in community transmission over the past few weeks, especially with the holidays approaching,” the email said. “So overall, the advice has not changed, but perhaps the way people think about that advice may be different.”

Verinder said there are likely a confluence of factors contributing to the increased spread, including more indoor gatherings during cooler months, the arrival of seasonal residents and the decreased compliance with precautions, such as mask-wearing.

“We don’t want to discourage people from being out, but we just want you to be safe when you are out,” Verinder said.

For residents looking for guidance, the county said it would share information from the Florida Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommended against traveling for Thanksgiving on Nov. 19. The county highlighted the following guidelines while community spread remains elevated: n Keep social circles small; n Make plans for protecting vulnerable populations, including the elderly and individuals with underlying conditions; and n Practice social distancing, wear masks when social distancing is not possible, and wash frequently.

County health officials said one of the biggest challenges in managing the spread of the disease locally is people becoming weary of dealing with the pandemic more than nine months after the first Sarasota case was identified.

“We need people to continue to do those things that have been successful in controlling the virus so far, especially staying home if sick or staying home when we’ve been in direct contact with someone sick,” the email said.

Verinder said the hospital was in a better position to respond to COVID-19 cases than it was in the initial wave in March because doctors know much more about the disease. He, too, stressed the need to continue to behave cautiously and responsibly for at least awhile longer. With multiple vaccines in development and showing promising early results, though, he expressed optimism that progress isn’t far away.

“I’m very hopeful that we can get back to some level of normalcy in the next few months,” Verinder said.

If the City Commission accepts the proposed terms of City Manager Tom Barwin’s resignation at its next meeting, the city’s top administrator will leave his post

The agenda for the Dec. 7 City Commission meeting, published Nov. 20, includes a request to authorize a separation agreement and release between Barwin and the city. Barwin shared his intent to discuss his plans for retirement in a memo to Commissioner Erik Arroyo earlier this month, though specifics about his departure were not divulged.

Now the full terms of the separation agreement are public. After Barwin vacates his position Dec. 31, the agreement would entitle him to 20 weeks of pay based on his current annual salary of $220,688.21, as well as other benefits including insurance and vehicle allowance.

During those 20 weeks, Barwin would remain available to the city for assistance on an on-call basis.

If it approves the separation agreement, the city would waive the right to enforce a provision in Barwin’s contract that requires him to give notice a minimum of 60 days before departing his position. The agreement would require the city to indemnify Barwin from liability from actions during his time as city manager.

Barwin would agree not to make any legal claims against the city.

In addition to recommending approval of the separation agreement, city administration is recommending the commission take action at the Dec. 7 meeting to appoint an interim city manager to serve once Barwin’s departure is official.

ince 2014, a coalition of artists, public officials and neighborhood leaders have expressed their excitement about the possibility of building an affordable live-work space for artists in Sarasota, but that excitement has failed to produce an actual project.

Jim Shirley, the executive director of the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County, said he is hopeful that might change soon. On Monday, Nov. 16, Shirley appeared in front of the City Commission and asked the board to submit a letter of support for his group’s proposal to build a 64-unit artist housing project on a 6.2-acre, county-owned parcel at 4644 N. Tamiami Trail.

The Nov. 16 meeting came more than six years after resident Veronica Morgan helped bring Minneapolis-based affordable housing nonprofit Artspace to Sarasota to evaluate undertaking a local development. The nonprofit’s preliminary review, focused on the North Trail, identified five sites, one of which was the county-owned parcel on which the Arts Alliance is now focused. The Arts Alliance developed its proposal for the countyowned parcel in partnership with

Artspace, which would serve as developer and property manager.

The City Commission voted 3-2 to issue the letter of support Shirley requested. After the meeting, Shirley said the community’s enthusiasm for an artist-focused housing project hadn’t dissipated over the years.

“It would be beautiful to help the development of the North Trail, and it would be great for us to retain artists, both young and old,” Shirley said.

The county, interested in developing the Tamiami Trail property as affordable housing, issued an invitation to negotiate for groups that wanted to pursue a project.

The Arts Alliance was one of six applicants. The others were: n Blue Sky Communities, the developer behind Arbor Village on Fruitville Road, which proposed a 92-unit project; n Carrfour Supportive Housing, a Miami-based company that proposed up to 219 units; n Falcone Group, a Boca Ratonbased company that proposed a 156-unit project; n Southport Development, a Tampa-based company that proposed a 134-unit project; and n The Veterans Housing Coalition, a Sarasota-based group that proposed a 75-unit mixed-use project targeted at veterans.

Commissioners want study on district plan After the 2020 elections, commissioners want to gauge public opinion on single-member districts.

Less than a month after Sarasota County voters cast ballots in single-member district elections for the first time since the 1990s, county commissioners say the process was confusing and asked staff to survey the public on the voting system.

More than 60% of Sarasota County voters approved a 2018 referendum allowing singlemember commission districts, which means that residents only vote in the commission race for their district, not every district countywide.

Commissioners, all Republicans, on Nov. 17 said voters weren’t sure who their commissioners were and for whom they were eligible to vote. Many expressed concern that voters don’t know what single-member districts are.

Kindra Muntz, the president of Sarasota Alliance for Fair Elections, said the organization hosted forums and collected more than 15,000 petition signatures to get

the referendum on the 2018 ballot. She said voters knew “exactly what they were doing” when they approved the switch.

“It’s misleading and really an insult from the commissioners to say the people didn’t know what they were doing,” Muntz said. “It really is an insult.”

The county previously switched to single-member voting in 1992 but switched back to at-large voting two years later.

Commissioner Nancy Detert, who initiated the Nov. 17 conversation, said she’d like to see a countywide survey to gain input on the single-member election and if voters preferred the previous at-large system.

“I want to see a survey outlining the way it used to be: When three county commissioners were up, you voted for three county commissioners. Or do you want to keep it the way it is?” Detert said.

“Did they feel they were deprived of the right to vote, or did they think it was a great idea?”

Commissioner Christian Ziegler agreed with the survey, but he said it would have to deliver information on the issue because many survey-takers might still be confused. He said staff would have to find an “unbiased way” to write the questions.

“You really have to wonder what the motivation is behind any effort to undo this” said Pat

Rounds, a member of Citizens for District Power. “[Were] there people showing discontent? There was record turnout at the polls. I don’t recall anyone standing outside polling areas saying, ‘We hate single-member districts.’”

Commissioners said they would continue talking about the survey at their December planning retreat. In early discussions, commissioners did not mention an attempt to repeal the citizen-led referendum, but many expressed disdain for the system.

Chair Mike Moran said it allows self-funded candidates who only care about one district-specific issue to more easily gain a seat.

“It opens the door for a candidate that has a lot of personal wealth and just has an axe to grind on a very specific one-issue topic,” Moran said “They don’t care about the county as a whole, like we all might at this dais. They care about a specific issue and use their own personal money to try and buy that seat.”

Ziegler said the move makes commissioners less accountable because they only have to worry about their own district.

“It basically immediately removed 80% of the representation. It also removed 80% of their accountability and holding county commissioners accountable,” Ziegler said. “I mean, If I’m a citizen, I want to be able to

Commissioners last year voted to redraw district lines ahead of the 2020 census, a decision that triggered a federal civil rights lawsuit. The suit claimed the map discriminated against voters because it moved a large number of Black voters from District 1 into District 2, meaning they weren’t able to vote in the 2020 elections.

A federal judge said the suit had no racial grounds, but the redistricting was “political in nature.”

seat by more than 11 points in the recent election.

Ziegler’s District 2 seat comes up for reelection 2022. Voters in a broad swath of that same geography favored Democrat Joe Biden in the recent presidential race, in contrast to the 10-point countywide victory of Republican Donald Trump.

“People were not happy with how [the redistricting] was conducted,” Rounds said. “So to take and undo, essentially for the second time, the will of the voters, I just don’t understand this unless what you have here is a desire to maintain the status quo in your districts.”

Commissioners say there are consequences to eliminating atlarge districts, and the survey is necessary to gauge public opinion after voters experienced their first single-member district.

“I’m not sure the public has been exposed to what singlemember districts truly are,” Ziegler said.

Triumph of a noble cause On the 400th anniversary of the Puritans settling in the New World, the story of the repatriation of Williams Bradford’s history of Plymouth Colony is a vivid reminder of why our nation exists.

ere’s a likely picture in millions of homes across this Great Land on this Thanksgiving

2020: Smaller than usual numbers are gathered around the festive table. The tone and atmosphere are less jolly than previous years — muted, almost somber.

It has been a tough year.

When the Thanksgiving blessing begins, heads bowed, there is likely to be gratitude — deep, sincere gratitude for the blessings, however great or small, that the good Lord has bestowed on the family members present and afar.

We can also be sure that in these prayers there will be many pleadings to the Almighty that he look with favor on our nation and bring peace, understanding, tolerance, protection, healing, good health and love of neighbor and country during this time of strife, division and fear.

When the blessing ends, and after a heartfelt toast, someone probably will announce: “Let’s not spoil our Thanksgiving dinner with any talk of politics.”

Hear, hear. Let’s not.

Instead, we want to tell a different story, one that is seldom told, if ever. It is not the story of the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock — that extraordinary story of 102 courageous Puritans aboard the Mayflower falling to their knees when they stepped on land and their settling at New Plymouth 400 years ago. Yes, 400 years ago!

With remarkably little fanfare, this year marks the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims laying the bedrock foundation for what would become the U.S. Nor is the story we’re about to tell that of the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians coming together in 1621 in peace and thanking the Almighty for a bountiful harvest at that first Thanksgiving celebration.

MOST PRECIOUS MANUSCRIPT

The story we’re about to tell occurred 276 years after that first Thanksgiving — on April 29, 1897. On that day in Boston, Thomas Bayard, the U.S. ambassador at the Court of St. James in London, handed over to the governor of Massachusetts, Roger Wolcott, a manuscript that one of the dignitaries present at the ceremony described as “the most precious manuscript on Earth, unless we could recover one of the four gospels as it came in the beginning from the pen of the Evangelist.”

Bayard had traveled from London to Boston carrying the

original 270-page manuscript of Gov. William Bradford, one of the leaders on the Mayflower and longest serving governor of Plymouth Colony. The manuscript was Bradford’s firsthand account and history of our nation’s first settlers.

Entitled “Of Plimouth Plantation,” Bradford chronicled in vivid detail life among these separatists from the time they fled religious persecution in England and Holland; to the creation of the Mayflower Compact, the document that served as their constitution and later as a foundation for our existing Constitution; through a period of discovering how self-interest in property ownership saved them from starvation; to the signing of treaties with Native American tribes. In all, his manuscript covered nearly 30 years — from 1620 to 1647.

Bradford’s manuscript is the only authentic, comprehensive, firsthand account of the real birth of this nation.

On that April day in 1897, when Bayard delivered the manuscript to Wolcott at a ceremony of dignitaries from England and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, U.S. Sen. George Hoar of Massachusetts delivered a 4,000-word speech, explaining the complicated route of Bradford’s manuscript coming home to its roots in Massachusetts.

LOST FOR 90 YEARS

Historians for nearly 90 years believed Bradford’s manuscript was lost — last seen in 1767 in the hands of the last British governor of Massachusetts. But in 1855, when an American historian was in England doing research for a book on the history of Massachusetts, he came across a copy of Bradford’s manuscript in a London bookstore.

As Hoar explained, the historian contacted a noted British historian to help him find the whereabouts of Bradford’s original manuscript. The Brit began his own search and eventually discovered Bradford’s manuscript had been stored all these years in the Bishops of London Library at Fulham Palace, the residence of British bishops.

Over the next four decades, American and Massachusetts officials made several attempts to have Bradford’s manuscript returned to its origin. But the Brits refused, saying it required an act of Parliament and Queen Victoria.

Hoar himself spent months in 1895 pursuing the manuscript’s release. Finally, he won an audience with the Bishop of London, who agreed with Hoar that Bradford’s manuscript belonged in the U.S. But he told Hoar: “I think I ought to consult the archbishop of Canterbury.

I think I ought to speak to the queen about it. We should not do such a thing behind Her Majesty’s back.”

Hoar returned to Massachusetts to tell the governor, other state officials and officers of historical societies of his success, urging them to send letters to the bishop of London in support of

the manuscript’s return.

Time passed, during which the bishop of London whom Hoar befriended became archbishop of Canterbury. The archbishop then advised Hoar and Bayard that a formal petition for the manuscript be presented to the Episcopal Consistorial Court of London.

On March 25, 1897, the court issued a decree, published in the London Times, ordering the manuscript be returned to Massachusetts.

OF PERIL AND TRIUMPH

As Hoar concluded his speech describing the efforts to bring Bradford’s manuscript back to Massachusetts, he put into perspective the importance of Bradford’s manuscript: “Wherever it shall go, it will be an object of reverent care. I do not think many Americans will gaze upon it without a little trembling of the lips and a little gathering of mist in the eyes, as they think of the story of suffering, of sorrow, of peril, of exile, of death and of lofty triumph which that book tells, which the hand of the great leader and founder of America has traced on those pages.

“There is nothing like it in human annals since the story of Bethlehem. These Englishmen and Englishwomen going out from their homes in beautiful Lincoln and York, wife separated from husband and mother from child in that hurried embarkation for Holland, pursued to the beach by English horsemen; the 13 years of exile; the life at Amsterdam ‘in alley foul and lane obscure’; the dwelling at Leyden; the embarkation at Delfthaven; the farewell of Robinson; the terrible voyage across the Atlantic; the compact in the harbor; the landing on the rock; the dreadful first winter; the death roll of more than half the number; the days of suffering and of famine; the wakeful night, listening for the yell of wild beast and the war-whoop of the savage; the building of the state on those sure foundations which no wave or tempest has ever shaken; the breaking of the new light; the dawning of the new day; the beginning of the new life; the enjoyment of peace with liberty. …

“Of all these things, this is the original record by the hand of our beloved father and founder.

Massachusetts will preserve it until the time shall come that her children are unworthy of it; and that time shall come — never.”

To underscore the significance of Bradford’s original manuscript returning to its rightful home, Wolcott followed Hoar with his interpretation of this historic event, equally profound: “On the sloping hillside of Plymouth, that bathes its feet in the waters of the Atlantic, such a voice is breathed by the brooding genius of the place, and the ear must be dull that fails to catch the whispered words. For here not alone did godly men and women suffer greatly for a great cause, but their noble purpose was not doomed to defeat but

was carried to perfect victory.

“They established what they planned. Their feeble plantation became the birthplace of religious liberty, the cradle of a free commonwealth.

“To them a mighty nation owes its debt. Nay, they have made the civilized world their debtor. In the varied tapestry which pictures our national life, the richest spots are those where gleam the golden threads of conscience, courage and faith, set in the web by that little band. May God in his mercy grant that the moral impulse which founded this nation may never cease to control its destiny, that no act of any future generation may put in peril the fundamental principles on which it is based: of equal rights in a free state, equal privileges in a free church and equal opportunities in a free school.

“In this precious volume which I hold in my hands — the gift of England to the commonwealth of Massachusetts — is told the noble, simple story ‘Of Plimoth Plantation.’

“In the midst of suffering and privation and anxiety the pious hand of William Bradford here set down in ample detail the history of the enterprise from its inception to the year 1647.

From him we may learn ‘that all great and honorable actions are accompanied with great difficulties and must be both enterprised and overcome with answerable courages.’

“The sadness and pathos which some might read into the narrative are to me lost in victory. The triumph of a noble cause even at a great price is theme for rejoicing, not for sorrow, and the story here told is one of triumphant achievement, and not of defeat.

PRICELESS GIFT

“As the official representative of the commonwealth, I receive it, sir, at your hands. I pledge the faith of the commonwealth that for all time it shall be guarded in accordance with the terms of the decree under which it is delivered into her possession as one of her chiefest treasures.

“I express the thanks of the commonwealth for the priceless gift. And I venture the prophecy that for countless years to come and to untold thousands these mute pages shall eloquently speak of high resolve, great suffering and heroic endurance made possible by an absolute faith in the over-ruling providence of Almighty God.” A truly magnificent story.

While we give thanks for all our blessings on this Thanksgiving Day 2020, the story of the recovery of William Bradford’s manuscript gives greater meaning to this special day. It affirms forever the bedrock of our nation’s founding — that of the birthplace of religious liberty, a free people and our faith in God. God bless America.

Pilgrims learned socialism doesn’t work The first colonists at Plymouth, Mass., almost starved until they switched to private property and ownership.

hanksgiving is a wonderful time to remember the roots of the American “experience.” It is a great

story.

The Puritans, a group of deeply religious people, left their native England during the early 1600s after negotiating a land grant and passage on the Mayflower for the New World.

They arrived in November 1620 off the coast of what is now Plymouth, Mass. Seeking stability for their new colony, before landing, they agreed to a compact with general rules of conduct. That came to be known as the Mayflower Compact, or

the first attempt at organized self-government in America.

Among the dreams of this Christian community was a common storehouse of food, clothing and other supplies, available to colonists as needed.

Theoretically, this tight Christian community should have cooperated and prospered. The colony, however, suffered during that first winter, using up the supplies. The original leader died and was replaced by William Bradford in spring 1621. Bradford in 1623 wrote of the experience of the colony in “History of the Plymouth Plantation.”

Bradford noted some of the colonists didn’t work or contribute to the colony’s well-being, so he and other elders determined to amend the general rules of the community. Among other changes, instead of an open storehouse, now only those who worked in some form were to be offered access and supplies.

Soon after, the colony prospered, and with the help of the local Native Americans, it thrived within a few years. Or, as Bradford told it: “The failure of this experiment of communal service, which was tried for several years, and by

good and honest men proves the emptiness of the theory of Plato and other ancients applauded by some of the later times — that the taking away of private property, and the possession of it in community, by a commonwealth would make them happy and flourishing, as if they were wiser than God. “For in this instance, community of property (so far as it went) was found to breed much confusion and discontent and

retard much employment, which would have been to the general benefit and comfort.

“For the young men who were most able and fit for service objected to being forced to spend their time and strength working for other men’s wives and children, without any recompense.

The strong man or the resourceful man had no more share of food, clothes, etc., than the weak man. … This was thought injustice.

“The aged and graver men, who were ranked and equalized in labour, food, clothes, etc., with the humbler and younger ones, thought it some indignity and disrespected to them.

“Let none argue that this is due to human failing, rather than to this communistic plan of life in itself. I answer, seeing that all men have this failing in them, that God in his wisdom saw that another plan of life was fitter for them.”

The resulting success story we call Thanksgiving and America.

Socialism or communism (even “democratic socialism”) has never worked as a human economic system and never will.

ourthouses are often places where precedents are set and history is crafted, but to begin exploring Sarasota County’s past, one only needs to take a look at the building.

The courthouse on Main Street was placed on the Sarasota County Register of Historic Places after an unanimous County Commission vote Nov. 17.

Completed in 1927, it was the first permanent civic building constructed by the county on land donated by Charles Ringling.

The structure was designed by architect Dwight James Baum, who also designed the Ca d’Zan. Baum imported tiles from Spain and hired Samuel Yellin, an internationally renowned metal worker, to do the iron work.

“The courthouse stands as one of the architectural masterpieces of the Mediterranean Revival style in Sarasota County and a significant example of the style from the 1920s land boom development of the state of Florida,” a county memo states.

In 2016, the county began a process for designating significant county-owned historic resources to “foster and further

the protection of significant historic resources in public hands for future generations.”

The listing comes after the Historical Resources division of the Sarasota County Libraries in 2018 identified seven significant structures that were not formally listed on the SCRHP. Since then, six of the seven

have been named: the Terrace Building, Osprey Schoolhouse, Blackburn Point Bridge, Phillippi Estate, Scott Building and Venice Train Depot.

The courthouse is the last to be listed.

Ringling sold the lot to the county for a nominal fee provided the construction of the courthouse

did not cost more than $150,000.

If the county failed to build on the lot, the property would return to him, according to a report written by historic preservation specialist Jorge Danta Spector.

The courthouse served all county government functions into the 1940s. In 1954, the county approved the construction of the

In the 1980s, other county functions moved into the annex building, and in March 1984, the courthouse was listed to the National Register of Historic Places.

Most recently, the county underwent a decade’s worth of renovations to return the building to its original state.

The $4 million project was done in several phases: n Between 2007-2010, the judicial tower was renovated; n Between 2010-2014, the roof was replaced; and n Between 2014-2018, exterior restorations were done to strip away 100 years of paint and stucco that covered the building’s original features.

Karen Rushing, the clerk of the Circuit Court and comptroller, said she’s been a tenant of the courthouse since 1978, and throughout all the restorations, staff has made sure the historic nature of the building has been maintained.

“I’m really proud to say we sacrificed the use of some of the space in that building to allow the historic elements to remain as is,” she said.

“We didn’t encroach on any hallways that are really majestic and large and really serve no business purpose. There are a lot of nooks and crannies that are in that building that are interesting because all the county government was in there.”

After a rocky start with the process to distribute federal coronavirus relief money, the county has fielded so many applicants that leaders have paused the process until allocations can catch up.

In August, the county was one of the last in Florida with populations below 500,000 to begin distributing funds. And once it did, many applicants complained about a confusing process.

After kinks were ironed out, more than 4,700 business owners and individuals applied.

To date, the county has disbursed $27.1 million with another $8.6 million approved for allocation. That money went to more than 740 households and 573 businesses.

However, because of the large number of applications already received, the county is pausing the program for new applicants until it can allocate funds to applicants who completed the process already.

Emergency Services Director Rich Collins said the county has enough applicants to hit the total $75.7 million it has to allocate.

“We’re pausing right now,” Collins said. “We haven’t stopped or shut down the program. We paused, so that we can work through to identify where our allocations are to make sure that we can get everyone that we can taken care of.”

If the county works through

the current applications and still has money left to allocate, it will restart applications.

Existing applicants will be able to track their application through the process.

Collins said the county has more than 100 staff members dedicated to delivering allocations daily, and the pause will ensure better case management, so applicants will receive money quicker.

“This is about taking care of people,” Collins said. “You have business owners that have spent their whole life building a business with their family that are on the edge because of what’s occurred over several months.

“There are individuals that have lost jobs, that are on furlough — this is about getting the funding out there to help as many as possible.”

The County Commission also approved changes to the total amount allocated to each type of grant, shifting dollars to categories with the most need.

The changes are as follows: n $49 million allocated for business assistance; n $7.5 million for individual assistance; n $4 million for human services and nonprofits; and n $6 million for health and medical nonprofits.

County Administrator Jonathan Lewis said county staff has worked to push funding out quickly and will continue to do so through the Dec. 30 deadline to exhaust the money. If the county has not allocated all of its funds before then, it will have to return the remainder.

“The effort to help those in need deal with the effects of COVID-19 and keep our community running has been amazing,” Lewis said in a release. “Our employees, CARES ambassadors and chambers of commerce have been working to help those who need it.”

A Greenwich, Conn.-based company redeveloping the Main Plaza property in downtown Sarasota into apartments and retail space has acquired a second downtown tract that spans more than a city block, county records show.

Belpointe REIT Inc. affiliates acquired three buildings and surface parking comprising the 1700 block of Main Street for $6.8 million late last month, records show.

Another entity controlled by the real estate investment trust also acquired a seven-story office building and adjacent parking owned and occupied by Frontier Communications at 1701 Ringling Blvd. for $5.04 million, records show.

The three Main Street buildings at 1700-1718 Main St. consist of a single-story retail and office complex, a vacant three-story office building that most recently had been occupied by Iberia Bank and a former Firestone auto repair center occupied by the Tube Dude

Frontier, which was approved by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York, includes a lease that will give the communications company rights to the 95,264-square-foot office building and some parking through the end of October 2040 and as long as October 2070.

“This is a great downtown location,” said Ashley Bloom, a partner in commercial real estate brokerage firm SVN Lotus Commercial Real Estate Advisors, which represented Brown’s entities in the transaction together with agents Ron Zeigler, Rob Henry and Chris Malkin.

Belpointe was represented in the transaction by Kevin Robbins of Robbins Commercial Real Estate, an affiliate of Harry E. Robbins Associates Inc., of Sarasota.

In late September, Belpointe began demolition work on a portion of the two-story, 259,000-square-foot Main Plaza office and retail complex, where it plans to construct a pair of buildings with 418 apartments and 50,000 square feet of retail space, including a food hall. The private equity firm acquired 8.6 acres of Main Plaza, at 1991 Main St., in late 2019 for roughly $20 million.

Another Main Plaza tract, which includes the Regal Cinemas Hollywood 11 theater and was excluded from the original marketing efforts, is now being offered for sale for about $19 million.

The listing from Robbins, which calls the spot the “most visible corner in downtown Sarasota,” states the site is zoned for 10 stories and 144 feet of height and uses include hotel, general office, medical office, restaurants, retail, grocery store and more.

ooker High boys basketball Coach Markus Black has a message for opponents who might be listening.

“Don’t play zone against us,” Black said, laughing. “We’re a different team this year. It’s not going to work.”

Last season, Booker High went 10-17 on the back of an inexperienced roster — puppies, as Black called them. Teams played zone because it tripped Booker up and forced them into mistakes. They were never quite able to overcome that. But the dogs are all grown up now, or they’d better be, Black said. They don’t have much of a choice if they want to accomplish their goal of returning to the state Final Four, as they did three seasons ago, when seniors King Winkfield and Paul Mcleod were freshmen on the varsity team.

Black said Booker’s success is going to come down to execution. The Tornadoes have a workable mix of young and experienced players, and Winkfield and Mcleod, Booker’s captains, are two of the top players in the area.

They will be supplemented by 6-foot-7 senior forward Treyvon Hinson, 6-foot-5 senior wing Jason Palavra and 5-foot-11 sophomore guard Joey Winter, among others. They have size and talent, and like every Booker team, they will play physically. But they have to prove they learned from last season’s missteps.

It hasn’t been the easiest offseason. Winkfield said he believes the Tornadoes have the talent to return to Lakeland for the Final Four.

“We can score inside and outside,” Winkfield said. “We can defend. We can do it all. We just have to actually do it.”

For Booker’s seniors, this is the last chance to leave the legacy they want to leave.

And seriously: Don’t play zone against Booker. Black said he understands why teams did it last year, even saying he would have done the same. But it’s a new day now, and they have been working against zone in practice.

“We can shoot much better this year than last year,” Black said.

“Joey Winter might be the best shooter in the state. With him, King and Paul, we’re going to be strong.”

The Tornadoes’ regular season begins with a 3:30 p.m. Saturday road game at local rival Riverview High. The Rams won both games against Booker last season, by eight and five points.

And then there was one Only Riverview High football remains in the 2020 playoffs.

nly one local team remains alive in the Florida High School Athletic Association football playoffs.

The Riverview Rams (9-1) advanced to the regional semifinals after a 35-0 home win against Lennard High on Nov. 20. The 35 might look shiny, but it’s the 0 that should excite Rams fans going forward. After allowing 26 points to Lennard the first time the two teams played this season, the Rams earned, and I do mean earned, the shutout.

They held Longhorns quarterback Carter Payne to 61 passing yards on four completions (out of 21 attempts). The defense is playing its best football when it needs to do so.

But Osceola High (6-2), which Riverview plays on the road Friday night in the regional semifinals, might be the Rams’ stiffest challenge thus far. The Kowboys — yes, it’s spelled with a K, named thus to honor Kissimmee’s history as Florida’s “cow capital” — don’t do anything small. All of their wins have been by 22 points or more, though

they lost 34-7 to Vero Beach High on Nov. 6. Their other loss, 31-24 to Edgewater High on Oct. 16, is their only game decided by one score or even two touchdowns. That means the Kowboys are untested in close games, which I think this might be.

Does that give Riverview the edge? Maybe, but the Rams will still have to contend with Kowboys junior quarterback Chad Mascoe, who was committed to Florida State before decommitting in March. In addition to the Seminoles, Mascoe holds offers from Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Oregon, among other schools. Mascoe, a 6-foot-1 dual threat quarterback, has completed 60.6% of his passes this season, with 10 touchdowns and a single interception.

The Kowboys are also averaging seven yards a carry on the ground, with junior Ja’Randy Swint (472 yards, six touchdowns) doing most of the damage. It helps that they’re running behind senior offensive tackle Delfin Castillo, a Vanderbilt commit. The Kowboys are just as stout defensively, where sophomores Derrick LeBlanc and John Walker patrol the defensive line.

Both players hold offers from Alabama, among other college powerhouses.

the Rams are feeling good about themselves.

“We’re starting to play better right now,” Smithers said postgame. “Earlier in the year, we were having a few breakdowns here and there. We’d have penalties, things like that to extend drives.”

There’s no better time for things to start coming together.

Osceola will be a challenge, no doubt. Especially on the road.

But Riverview has players of its own, don’t forget. Rams defensive tackles Jairus Brewer and Sincere Littles both have Iowa State offers, per Rivals. I’m no analyst, but I think this game will come down to whoever con-

trols the trenches.

If the Rams win, they’ll play either Newsome High (which the Rams have already beaten) or Steinbrenner High (good but not great) in the regional final.

There’s a path back to the Final Four; there’s just an Osceolashaped obstacle in their way.

We’ll soon discover if the Rams can get past it.

King Winkfield King Winkfield is a senior on the Booker High boys basketball team. In 2019-20, he led the team in scoring with 13.6 points a game and was second with 3.0 assists a game.

When did you start playing basketball?

I started at 9 years old, in fifth grade. I was just playing rec ball then. An AAU coach saw me playing and asked me to play with the Kings (a local AAU program).

That’s how I met Paul (Mcleod Jr., Booker teammate). We have been playing together ever since.

What is the appeal to you?

Everything, man. I love offense, defense, scoring, passing it to teammates. Whatever it takes to win. I love winning most of all.

ONE MORE HELPING Thanksgiving reveals a deep local need but also the community’s desire to help out.

anjuana Caudillo knows what it’s like to be in need.

The Sarasota mother of nine enjoys spending Thanksgiving with her friends and family, but occasionally, life and finances get in the way of a traditional celebration. Such was the case a few years ago when Caudillo was facing the holiday with no signature turkey dinner.

“Sometimes [I don’t] have so much for a big dinner for my family,” Caudillo said. “I have a big family.”

It was around then she connected with the Safe Children Coalition. One of the group’s programs is an annual Thanksgiving event where Caudillo received her own turkey dinner complete with sides and dessert.

the food bank for the first time. “[COVID-19] is unfolding, so we have seen this incredible, unexpected and historical increase in need,” Frank said. “[People] are already feeling the impact. They’re already feeling crushed by the financial hardship. At least we can give them something to celebrate and something to be joyful in sharing this holiday meal.”

Greater need brings greater costs, and Frank said the annual food budget this year has ballooned from the usual of $100,000-$150,000 to about $400,000-$450,000.

community support organization during its annual Thanksgiving turkey dinner distribution Nov. 21, where she helped pass out cooked turkeys, side dishes, pies and other food to families in need. The drive-thru event — which passed out 600 dinners to Sarasota and Manatee county families — was there for Caudillo when she needed it, and now she wants to be there for others.

“I like helping people,” Caudillo said.

Dozens of organizations all across Sarasota are currently engaged in the collection and distribution of Thanksgiving meals to families in need. Right now, amid a faltering economy and a surging pandemic, that need is greater than ever.

No one knows that better than All Faiths Food Bank CEO Sandra Frank, who has tracked an unprecedented increase in demand since March. Staff have seen a 45% increase in new clients visiting

meals to families across Sarasota and Manatee counties. The initiative had countless volunteers passing out meals in Arcadia, North Port and Venice, as well as at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall and Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota.

They’ve had help. Volunteers have pitched in to distribute the Thanksgiving meals, including members of the Baltimore Orioles. Orioles Manager Brandon Hyde and his wife and daughter joined the distribution at Ed Smith Stadium on Nov. 17.

“There’s a lot of people that are having a hard time right now,” Hyde said. “Anytime you can give back I think is really important. To have my daughter, who’s 10, be a part of that, I think was a special moment.”

The Second Chance Last Opportunity social services organization helps disadvantaged people in Newtown with food distribution twice a week and has provided turkey dinners during Thanksgiving and the holidays for the past 25 years. Director April Glasco said she enjoys helping those in need during the holiday season, especially children.

“When I see [children], when they come up on Wednesdays or Fridays, they give me a smile,” Glasco said. “Then I know they’re eating, and that’s so important.”

The amount of need Frank has seen this year was overwhelming at first — she describes it as shell shock — but it has turned into a necessary resilience as the months have carried on. It’s been a hard thing to see people gainfully employed for decades being laid off and waiting in line to feed their families, Frank said, adding that she’s been heartened by how the community has risen up to help them. Everyone is in this together, after all.

“We see families all the time that drive up in tears, and they’re saying never in their lives do they imagine that they would need to visit the [food] bank,” Frank said.

“I think we can all empathize with that. … If there’s a positive, it is an empathy across and around our community that this can happen, and is happening, to everyone.”

heater holds a mirror up to life. But life isn’t fair, and life sometimes punches live theater in the face.

Sometimes, the show doesn’t always go on. The pandemic was this year’s showstopper.

Theater troupes everywhere faced hard choices. The FSU/ Asolo Acting Conservatory was

no exception.

On March 12, even Broadway went dark. A few days later, Asolo Repertory Theatre and Asolo Conservatory did too.

Greg Leaming is the conservatory’s director. He needed a Plan B. The stage was off-limits. Virtual theater was the only alternative. Which play?

Director Benny Ambush suggested a short list of relevant plays.

Los Angeles, 1992” was at the top. Her play focused on the LA riots following the acquittal of the police officers in the Rodney King beating. The city burned for six days. Why? What were the underlying issues? To get the answers, the playwright recorded interviews with 300 Angelenos of all descriptions. Smith distilled that to 40 transcripts of real-life individuals and performed each character in her virtuoso, onewoman show.

Leaming instantly saw the possibilities. The second-year student-actors could play the roles.

With that change, Smith’s play translated nicely to Zoom. But format wasn’t the deciding factor. History was.

In 2020, the repetitive litany was ugly. In the spring and long, hot summer, the nightly news was a weird echo of 1992. Different cops, different Black victims, different riots. But the script was familiar. “‘Twilight’ really speaks to our strange days,” Leaming said.

“I knew we had to do this play.

I didn’t know how at first. I just knew we had to.”

Leaming knew the perfect director: Benny Ambush.

The play’s tough-minded topic was in his wheelhouse. But directing an ensemble of actors on stage is one thing; assembling a mosaic of solo performance recordings in the editing room is another.

Zoom was a different animal for Ambush. It was for the actors too.

Thanks to Zoom, the world really was a stage. They rehearsed in scattered meetings on computers in apartments, offices and picnic tables. Ambush directed them one at a time. He repeated the process for their final performances.

Ptah Garvin and Dayna Playa shared similar experiences. Zoom was fun, frustrating, challenging — all of the above. It might be the future of theater. It might vanish with a vaccine. Who knows? Who cares?

Zoom is a means to an end.

The play’s the thing. Period.

Both actors care for their characters. Playing Hamlet is one thing. But the people they play are real. Most are still alive.

“I feel incredibly responsible for my characters,” Garvin said.

“The words I speak are the actual words they said. It’s their perspective, not mine. I try to honor that.”

Ambush said there is no big lesson. And that’s the lesson.

“The LA riots was such a huge historical moment,” he said. “It’s hard to wrap your mind around it.

What’s the big picture? The truth is there is no big picture. History isn’t made up of big moments.

It’s a lot of small moments that were big to the people who went through it.”

As Ambush sees it, the truth is a mosaic of experiences. Conveying that truth is his goal. And the playwright’s as well.

“Anna had no preconceptions about the LA riots,” he said. “She didn’t start with the big story. She got the story directly from the people. She pieced all their little stories together.”
