Lifesavers earn recognition Sheriff Kurt Hoffman awarded special recognition Nov. 15 to Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office employees credited with saving lives on the job. Communications Operator Patrick Ziarnicki, Deputy Cindy Fornal, Deputy George Norton, Sgt. Adam Shaw, Deputy Jim Lynch, and Corrections Deputies Danny Patnaude and Jamie Briandi were presented the department’s Life Saving Award. Some of that work included Shaw performing CPR on a jogger with no pulse, Lynch rescuing a man from a fire, and Patnaude and Briandi giving aid to a jail inmate. On the same day, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan bestowed his Fire and Rescue and Emergency Medical Services Award to Sarasota County Fire Department’s Lt. Randy Allen and firemedics Miriam Troyer, Andrew Moler and Michael Alberti.

Goodwill health fair cares for vets Goodwill Manasota had a novel approach for helping veterans on Nov. 13: a health and wellness fair offering a physical and mental health programs and services. The event, presented in recognition of Veterans Day, had around 100 veterans and community members meeting at the Goodwill’s Veterans Services office on North Lockwood Ridge Road. The organization partnered with SunCoast Blood Banks, represented by Susan Iwan (above), for the event. Veterans got caught up with dental screenings, blood pressure checks and blood sugar scans. Goodwill Manasota President Donn Githens said he was grateful for the number of community groups and representatives that participated in the event.
