Rector the Rev. Charleston Wilson and Assistant Rector the Rev. Chris Wood took time to give blessings to church attendees and their many pets during the outdoor event marking the Feast of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals.

Pets included dogs, cats, birds and hamsters, but this year’s event had a few more exotic creatures as well.

he theater program at Sarasota High has chosen a yearlong theme of hope for its three productions, the first of which opens Oct. 13 at the school.

“The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” is an adaptation of the classic C.S. Lewis story about redemption and love. The production, in the works since last spring, will run three nights, at 7 p.m.

Oct. 13-15 in the school’s theater, 2155 Bahia Vista St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the production is suitable for all ages.

Student performers will present “I Never Saw Another Butterfly,” based on children’s poems and drawings from a Nazi concentration camp, later in the school year, from Jan. 26-29.

“Footloose: The Musical,” a stage adaptation of the popular movie starring Kevin Bacon, takes the stage for five performances beginning April 20.

Murder suspect surrenders Benjamin Moulton, a 43-yearold Sarasota man questioned at the time about the 2011 death of Sarasota’s Nicole Rose Scott, was charged with first-degree murder in the case after turning himself in and admitting to the crime, authorities said.

The body of Scott, who was 29, was found Dec. 11, 2011, by a motorcyclist in a ditch near the intersection of University Parkway and Bourneside Boulevard. An autopsy determined Scott was strangled.

Moulton denied involvement, and detectives lacked evidence to link him to the crime. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Moulton provided details never before released to the public.

GOOD FRIDAYS Will a series of First Friday events bring the community out to gather downtown — and bolster local businesses in the process?

W

ould you make a point to visit downtown to partake in a giant dance party? How about to see a digital light show or watch the mayor officiate a wedding in Five Points Park?

City leaders are hoping the answers are yes. On Monday, the City Commission voted unanimously to approve funding to support a recurring event on the first Friday of the month, set to include closures on Lemon Avenue and State Street as necessary. The city is teaming with the Downtown Improvement District to organize the event series, which will launch in November under the branding Fresh Fridays.

Commissioners were enthusiastic about Fresh Fridays as an opportunity to give residents something to do and a mechanism for attracting customers to downtown businesses.

“I think this is something that would help jump-start energy and enthusiasm downtown,” Commissioner Kyle Battie said.

Those involved with launching the Fresh Fridays events are emphasizing the experimental nature of the first few installments and approaching the project with a flexible mindset. The first event will be centered on a street closure from 8-11 p.m. that uses the same footprint as the Sarasota Farmers Market.

That plan didn’t come together until a few days before the City Commission meeting, emerging out of a discussion between City Manager Marlon Brown and representatives for the Downtown Improvement District.

At one point, the Downtown Improvement District favored a vision for Fresh Fridays that didn’t involve any street closures at all. The city isn’t abandoning that concept: In December, officials plan to put on a decentralized holiday event that divides downtown into four different zones with distinct themes. Joe Grano, a marketing consultant the Downtown Improvement District hired to help organize Fresh Fri-

days, described the approach as an “Epcot-style experience.”

Brown said the city would evaluate how the first two events went before making firm decisions on future programming. Grano and Downtown Improvement District board member Chris Voelker said input from merchants and residents would guide the future of Fresh Fridays.

“The goal here is to learn,” Grano said. “We don’t have all the answers.”

Commissioner Jen AhearnKoch expressed some concern about the planned hours and the inclusion of a street closure, questioning whether merchants and residents would support the plan. Some downtown businesses expressed opposition to the city’s original plans for First Fridays, which called for a street closure on Main Street between Orange Avenue and Palm Avenue.

Voelker said the Downtown Improvement District had reached out to merchants, who indicated they would be more amenable to a smaller road closure that did not affect parking

on Main Street.

Voelker said the events would be planned in a manner that was sensitive to residents living nearby, but she felt 11 p.m. on a Friday was a reasonable cutoff time. “(Residents’) main concerns were that it not be too loud and not be too late, whatever it is,” Voelker said.

The rest of the commission was unreservedly enthusiastic about the events. Battie said he felt downtown was in need of invigoration, and he expressed hope that Fresh Fridays could make Sarasota a destination for people throughout the region.

“I don’t want to be saying, ‘Let’s go to St. Pete for First Friday,’” Battie said. “I want people from St. Pete saying, ‘We should go to Sarasota for Fresh Friday.’”

eyeballs on storefronts, creating opportunities for future patronage. Alpert and Voelker were hopeful businesses would make a point to stay open to be a part of the events.

“We’ve all been places where you window shop, and you think: ‘I’ll go back and get that. I really liked it,’” Voelker said.

Voelker and Grano pledged to attempt to gather information that gave a more concrete sense of the effects of the events once they begin. For the Fresh Friday in November, organizers will be required to get approval from two-thirds of affected businesses for the city to authorize the street closure.

The city estimated the cost of in-kind services for Fresh Fridays — including police and public works staffing and a waiver of special events fees — at between $3,626 and $4,833 per month. The city estimated the cost of decentralized events at between $5,790 and $7,227, and the cost of a larger Main Street closure at between $8,806 and $10,995.

Brody said he supported the 8-11 p.m. time frame because he thought it covered a broad range of people interested in participating in events like this — on the front end, those looking for an evening out on the town, and on the back end, individuals seeking late-night entertainment.

“I don’t care what age you are — people enjoy the social scene,” Brody said. “This is a social city.”

Downtown and city leaders hope to emulate the success of First Friday events in other communities, such as Lakewood Ranch’s Music on Main.

Although the specifics of each individual Fresh Friday are subject to change as organizers gather community input, Joe Grano has sketched out concepts for a number of events.

Grano, the president of marketing agency Next-Mark, is working with the Downtown Improvement District on Fresh Fridays and a broader advertising campaign. In his presentations to the downtown group, here’s a few of the ideas he pitched:

DECEMBER

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS Grano imagined the second installment of Fresh Fridays as a nod to the holiday season, celebrating traditions including Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.

Ideas for featured attractions include caroling and holiday shopping promotions. (Grano hoped to have Santa Claus make an attentiongrabbing arrival via helicopter, but planners are still working through logistics to see if that’s feasible.)

JANUARY

DANCE PARTY Attendees would have the opportunity to get down to different genres of music including ballroom, country and disco.

The event would feature live instruction from dance experts.

FEBRUARY

LOVE IS IN THE AIR Capitalizing on the proximity to Valentine’s Day, participating restaurants would offer lovethemed food and drinks to complement the sounds of romantic music on downtown streets.

A potential centerpiece attraction: The mayor officiates a wedding.

NEIGHBORS AND NEWCOMERS Tropic-themed festivities would celebrate the character of Sarasota, and attendees would be encouraged to invite a neighbor, friend or visitor to join them for a night downtown.

ow many votes should it take to amend the city’s comprehensive plan?

That was a subject of debate at the Sept. 29 meeting of the city’s Charter Review Committee. As the volunteer advisory board makes its way through the city’s foundational governing document in search of potential revisions, board member Philip DiMaria raised the prospect of changing the threshold for when a comprehensive plan amendment requires a majority vote.

Currently, the charter requires a supermajority vote of four commissioners to change the future land use classification of a piece of property, to add a new future land use classification to the city’s land use plan or to amend the comprehensive plan to increase the maximum height, floor area ratio or residential density within a future land use category.

DiMaria said the supermajority threshold was important to maintain when a comprehensive plan change would create greater strain on infrastructure, but he questioned whether height or density were the best metrics.

He suggested it could be in the city’s best interests to approve certain amendments that currently require a supermajority vote, and he asked whether the

city would be better off if those changes could pass with a simple majority instead.

“As a planner — not mixing my profession with my personal views — but I think impact on infrastructure is way more important than height, floor area ratio or maximum density,” DiMaria said. “Because that’s what we’re really talking about, right? What kind of strain are we putting on the city’s infrastructure?”

Other board members debated whether the city could quantify the sort of impact standards DiMaria proposed. Board member Cathy Antunes expressed reluctance to interfere with the supermajority, noting that it was established in a voter-backed amendment in 2007.

“I think you would find a lot of support for maintaining the supermajority because the idea of a comp plan — as you know, this is our governing, guiding land use document, and it’s not something that we just do willynilly,” Antunes said. “There’s got to be broad community support for changing it.”

The board agreed to table the issue without any final action.

The committee intends to revisit the conversation at its next meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11. The committee will also hear a presentation about various forms of local government in Florida.

Despite parking questions, St. Armands lot remains on the market The city has invited interested buyers to submit proposals for acquiring the Fillmore Drive parking lot, but it’s unclear how garage construction might affect any sale price.

ity commissioners said they are disinclined to approve a deal in which the city sells a St. Armands Circle parking lot to a private developer and ends up owing that developer money at closing, but officials remain open to hearing offers for the island property.

The commission reviewed some details surrounding its consideration of the sale of the Fillmore Drive parking lot on St. Armands at a meeting Monday.

Although the city has not received a formal offer to buy the property, developer JWM Management has expressed its interest in acquiring the land to build a project that includes a hotel, a grocery store and residences.

That proposal also included converting 270 public parking spaces in and around the Fillmore lot into spaces in a garage incorporated into the project. In a Sept. 22 memo, City Attorney Robert Fournier said staff anticipated JWM Management would ask for the cost of constructing that garage to offset the purchase price of the land. At a valuation of $30,000 per spot, Fournier said that could produce an $8 million

credit against the cost of buying the 1.98-acre site.

In an extreme circumstance, if the appraised value of the land was less than $8 million, Fournier said it’s possible such a deal could result in the city owing money to a developer. Fournier said he anticipated such a scenario would be unacceptable to city officials, a sentiment multiple officials affirmed at Monday’s meeting.

“I can’t imagine somebody would come in and say, ‘We want you to pay us for the lot,’” Alpert said. “If they can’t come up with a better plan than that, it probably wouldn’t go through.”

Fournier said any development on the Fillmore lot site could not reduce the number of parking spaces without running into issues with the bond used to pay for the Adams Drive parking lot on St. Armands, financed using revenue from paid parking. City Manager Marlon Brown indicated paying to retire the bond and nullify the applicable restrictions prior to 2027 would be cost prohibitive.

“We have to find some way to come up with $16 million,” Brown said. “I don’t have that money.”

Fournier’s update on parkingrelated financial questions didn’t change the commission’s stance on the prospective sale of the lot.

In May, representatives for JWM Management outlined a concept for a mixed-use project on the Fillmore lot. The city has not received a formal offer, but the inclusion of public parking could shape the proposed purchase price.

In August, the commission voted 4-1 to affirm it was open to private offers to purchase the property, declining to initiate a formal solicitation for proposals. Mayor Hagen Brody said the absence of any actual negotiations with interested buyers meant there was no need for the city to take any action.

“We have to wait and see what happens because of the situation we’re in,” Brody said.

Brody said it was good for interested parties to be aware of the unique dynamic associated with the potential purchase of the Fillmore lot. Fournier said he felt it was good for city officials, too.

“Now that it’s been brought

up, you’ll be in a position to ask about it if you’re presented with an offer,” Fournier said.

As the city ponders the future of the Fillmore lot, some Circle property owners have reached out to the city to advocate for their interests. Scott Macdonald, the owner of Crab and Fin restaurant, sent an email to commissioners Oct. 2 noting that an assessment on St. Armands commercial property owners in 1996 facilitated the purchase of the land that became the Fillmore lot. Macdonald said that funding agreement underscored the importance of parking in and around the Circle, and he expressed hope that any development on the Fillmore site would

increase the supply of spaces.

“If a project like this gets approved without additional parking, we will be going backward in our parking needs after having self-taxed ourselves for the past 25 years,” Macdonald wrote.

During Monday’s meeting, Brody said he wanted the city to be mindful of the contributions that St. Armands property owners have made toward public parking projects in the area.

“I just want to make sure we’re treating them fairly out there, as it is a very important part of our economic engine in the city,” Brody said.

he City Commission approved a four-story, 157unit apartment project on 10th Street that will be the first development to use a new zoning classification that allows higher density in exchange for incorporating affordable housing.

On Tuesday, the commission voted 5-0 and 4-1 to approve a rezoning, site plan and street vacation application for Luxe on Tenth, a development located at 1313 10th St. The 3.15-acre site runs from Cocoanut Avenue to Florida Avenue on the north side of 10th Street.

The land will now be zoned Residential Multiple Family 7, the highest density land use category permitted outside of downtown.

The city created the RMF-7 zone in 2020 as part of a package of policies designed to facilitate the production of more affordable housing. Developers can increase the maximum density from 25

to 50 units per acre if 25% of the bonus units in a project are designated as affordable for at least 30 years.

For Luxe on Tenth to meet that standard, developer Capital Investment Group would be required to provide 20 affordable units. Representatives for the developer said they intended to exceed that requirement, with the final plan providing 47 units designated as affordable.

“We’re excited about the ability to bring affordability to that area and also clean up that area, as it’s sat vacant for quite a while,” said Christian Dial, Capital Investment Group’s vice president of development.

During the developer’s presentation to the commission, Dial shared that he felt the city’s review process for proposed projects was challenging to navigate for parties interested in building both affordable and market-rate housing. Dial said Luxe on Tenth began going through that review process nearly two years ago in November 2019.

“It’s not a walk in the park doing development in Sarasota,” Dial said.

Commissioners Erik Arroyo and Hagen Brody said they felt it was important for the city to take that input into consideration.

Arroyo asked his fellow commissioners to consider what role they felt the board should play in evaluating project applications, questioning whether developers should be subject to a series of time- and cost-intensive public hearings and requests to alter code-compliant plans during the final stages of the review process.

“Do we want to have these hurdles?” Arroyo said.

The Luxe on Tenth project includes plans to improve sidewalks and landscaping surrounding the 10th Street property.

She noted that driveway required drivers to cut through a bike lane on Cocoanut, which she said was the primary route for cyclists to travel from some north Sarasota neighborhoods to downtown. “​​I would really like to see a little more consideration for all the connectivity we’re trying to do in neighborhoods,” Gilliland said.

Members of the project team said they felt the design of the access point would allow motorists to stop and avoid any potential conflict with cyclists, volunteering to add cautionary signs for drivers leaving the site. Chris Gallagher, a partner with Hoyt Architects who worked on the project, said an access point to a parking garage is not incongruous with a street that’s friendly for pedestrians and cyclists, stating the city’s largest downtown public parking garages are located on streets designed for walkability.

“I think there’s this image that cars are going to be coming in and out of this thing all day long, and they don’t,” Gallagher said.

n 2007, voters in the city of Sarasota approved adopting a ranked choice voting system for local elections with a 75% majority. After Sarasota voters approved the change in their voting system, the next step was for the Florida secretary of state to certify the software used to count votes in the new system, but they’ve refused to do so, requiring the city to seek a declaratory judgment to verify that what 75% of voters said they wanted is supported by the Florida Constitution.

Worse, when the City Commission just held a hearing Sept.

20 to discuss the issue, and many citizens, including myself, spoke up on the issue, almost all in favor of the commission taking action to defend the voters’ decision in 2007, the commission instead spent most of the time discussing whether each member of the commission personally thought ranked choice voting was a good idea.

Do we live in a democracy? Or are our votes just a suggestion?

What is ranked choice voting?

Ranked choice voting is not a bizarre fringe idea. A number of countries, including Canada and New Zealand, use it for national elections, and states including Utah, Colorado, Michigan and Oregon use it for local elections.

As the image above shows, a typical ranked choice election would have voters rank all of the candidates for a position, picking their first, second, third choices, and so on if there are more candidates.

If no one gets more than 50% of the vote, then the candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated, and people who chose that candidate as their first choice will have their votes reallocated to their second choice. This continues until one candidate gets more than 50% of the vote.

This system has a number of advantages over our usual “pick one candidate” voting system.

As New College political science professor Frank Alcock said at the Sept. 20 commission hearing, ranked voting allows voters to express much more completely their preferences — saying that who you select as first, second, etc., and last puts a lot more of your preferences into the final decision than does only getting to pick one candidate among many.

Ranked voting is popular with voters who experience using it.

At the hearing, commissioners

heard from Rank My Vote Florida, a statewide grassroots organization of Floridians advocating for ranked voting in their cities who gave a detailed presentation on the merits of ranked voting and its use around the world and across the U.S. Stan Lockhart, a former GOP chair for the state of Utah, also spoke in favor of ranked voting, explaining how popular and effective it has been in Utah since the state adopted it for local elections.

Polling results from a number of U.S. cities show that huge majorities of voters approve of ranked voting once they had a chance to use it, which is not surprising because ranked votes tend to result in winners that a large majority of people had in their top three choices.

Most people would prefer their second or third choice win to having their last choice win, and in many of our elections, people see either their first choice or their last choice win. Currently, it’s all or nothing, and a substantial minority are always deeply unhappy with the outcome, while in ranked voting, usually most people at least get their second or third choice and are less unhappy about the outcome.

Doesn’t that sound pleasant in an era in which it seems someone is disputing every election outcome?

What’s the sticking point in adopting ranked choice voting in Sarasota?

After Sarasota voters approved the change in their voting system, the next step was for the Florida secretary of state to certify the software used to count votes in the new system.

But they have refused to do so, citing the Florida Constitution Article VI, which states “General elections shall be decided by a plurality of votes cast.”

Ranked voting selects a winner who gets a majority, not just a plurality, of votes. But Florida law defines a general election as “an election held … for the purpose of filling national, state, county and district offices.” By

the state’s own legal definitions, the limitation cited by the secretary of state does not apply to municipal elections.

So not only did the City Commission discuss whether to give it their blessing, but the secretary of state also denied that ranked voting conformed to the Florida Constitution, when it fact it does conform. Citizens should be outraged at this paternalistic handling of voters’ clearly articulated decision to adopt ranked voting.

At the Sept. 20 meeting, the commission was to vote on the proposal for the city of Sarasota to seek a declaratory judgment that the Florida Constitution allows ranked voting in municipal elections. That would clear the way for the secretary of state to certify the software for the new city election system.

The city would bear no costs for seeking this judgment; Rank My Vote Florida has raised the money to pay for the lawyers and legal arguments and to bring the right stakeholders to the process to make the effort succeed.

The commission also heard from Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard and Gainesville Commissioner Harvey Ward. They explained that both cities want to approve a move to ranked voting but are stymied by the secretary of state’s decision on

Sarasota. Only Sarasota has legal standing to ask the courts to look at the secretary of state’s decision and to try to get a clearer reading on state law that would allow cities to adopt ranked choice voting.

So not only has the secretary of state’s misreading of the law denied Sarasota voters the voting system they overwhelmingly chose, but it has also prevented many other cities in Florida from adopting ranked choice voting for fear the secretary of state won’t certify their new election software either.

After more than an hour of discussion, the City Commission voted to approve the proposal to ask the court for a summary judgment with a 4-1 vote, with Mayor Hagen Brody the only no vote — in spite of 75% of his own city’s voters supporting ranked voting. But the next day, Vice Mayor Erik Arroyo asked the commission to revisit the decision in October. So it is not over yet.

This decision should not be even remotely controversial.

When 75% of city voters make a decision, the job of the commission is to respect and defend that vote, not to decide if they agree with the voters’ decision.

But unfortunately, the majority of the discussion and debate among commissioners Sept. 20 was, “Is ranked choice voting good?” not “Should we defend our voters’ decision or not?”

And the decision to table what Sarasotans voted for and revisit it is a shocking maneuver to stall and obstruct what voters want.

Rather than take the simple and costless step of asking the court for a ruling that will allow the choice of city voters to go into effect, the commission will again debate whether they agree with the voters’ decision.

It’s kind of outrageous.

State reps hear pitch on Siesta Key incorporation Support from legislators is essential if Siesta Key is going to become its own town, but some officials aren’t necessarily sold.

COUNTY FINALIZES 2022 BUDGET The County Commission formally approved a budget and millage rate for fiscal year 2022 on Sept. 29, finalizing a $1.54 billion financial plan.

The budget represents a 15% increase over fiscal year 2021, with both operating and capital budgets hitting five-year highs. General fund expenditures are set to increase 5.6% to $340.9 million.

More than half of that spending increase is going toward the Sarasota County Sheriff’s office, whose $132.9 million budget is a 7.6% increase over

Local representatives in the Florida Legislature have questions for residents who are pushing to incorporate Siesta Key as its own municipality.

On Sept. 30, during a meeting of the local delegation, Save Siesta Key board member Harry Anand outlined the impetus for the group’s campaign to incorporate Siesta Key and its vision for how a municipal government would function.

The group, which formed in March, hopes to get a question on the ballot asking Siesta Key residents whether they support creating a new town. For that to happen, state legislators must first authorize the referendum.

State Rep. Will Robinson, a Republican whose District 71 includes the north end of Siesta Key, said he had concerns about the feasibility study that Save Siesta Key submitted as part of its application. Robinson said he was hesitant to authorize another layer of government and taxation and that incorporation is a tool officials don’t frequently use in Florida, with only two municipalities added statewide since 2006.

area, and frankly, it’s not done often in the Legislature,” he said.

Robinson said he felt legislators were being asked to settle a zoning dispute, as Save Siesta Key originally formed in response to a series of proposed hotel developments on the island that drew resident opposition. Anand disputed the idea that the incorporation effort was limited to disagreements on a few land-use decisions, stating the group sought to create a government that was more responsive to the specific interests of Siesta residents.

“Siesta Key has a unique island

lifestyle and has needs that may not be understood unless you actually live there,” Anand said.

Save Siesta Key is proposing a “government lite” operating model focused primarily on planning, zoning and code enforcement. Other essential services would be maintained via contracts with the county and other partners. State Rep. Fiona McFarland, a Republican whose District 72 includes the rest of Siesta Key, asked whether incorporation was the best solution if Siesta residents were satisfied with most of the government services cur-

rently available to them.

“I’m wondering if there are other avenues to solve your concerns,” McFarland said.

Anand reiterated the group’s belief that Siesta Key residents would be better represented if its leaders were responding directly to the island’s needs. He said population growth in Sarasota meant Siesta was becoming an increasingly smaller portion of the county.

“We think services can be better if we have a seat at the table,” Anand said.

McFarland asked whether the group had considered pursuing incorporation into the city of Sarasota, rather than as an independent town. Anand said it had not, but on Tuesday, City Commissioner Erik Arroyo expressed a

Anand said supporting the group’s efforts did not represent a vote to create the town of Siesta Key but rather an affirmation the idea is feasible and that residents should have an opportunity to say if they support it.

“At the end of the day, what we’re requesting is: Let the people vote,” Anand said.

UNILATERAL COLLATERAL 6:01 p.m. — 2000 block of South Jefferson Avenue Dispute: A woman said she and her husband were having issues with their landlord. As the couple was moving out of their house, they left some items on the property while they were making trips to their new residence. The woman said the landlord was upset because there was still some furniture inside the house, but she said the landlord provided that furniture when they first moved in. he Rev. Charleston Wilson wasn’t sold on moving to Florida — not at first.

The entrepreneur was deciding whether to accept an offer from then-Rector Fred Robinson to work at the Church of the Redeemer in downtown Sarasota nearly a decade ago.

Wilson admits he and his wife were fairly misinformed about the Sunshine State.

“When you’re a born-and-bred Southerner, you think all of Florida is a bit like the Panhandle,” Wilson said. “Nothing could be further than the truth.”

The eight years he’s spent working up the ranks at the church have changed his mind about his new home.

Wilson, 39, has become devoted to his parish to the point that he was appointed rector of the church. Priests and leaders in the Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida attended a service and reception that installed Wilson on Sept. 16.

His responsibilities include overseeing the spiritual life of the parish, managing the staff, promoting outreach and gaining new followers.

Hobbies: Wilson grew up watching his parents drink wine and have a ball during dinner parties. Eventually, he cracked opened one of his father’s books about wine and fell in love himself.

He became a successful sommelier and even lived in France for a few years to learn more about the industry. One of his particular favorite drinks is a red Bordeaux.

Growing up in Lynden, there was one radio station with two genres, country and Motown tunes. Wilson is an avid Motown fanatic and particularly loves Diana Ross & The Supremes.

Favorite Bible verse: Wilson believes a crucial tenet of Christianity is to let go and accept God’s grace toward you.

He also said his faith — especially compared to his wife — was lacking.

“I’d call myself a CEO Christian: I went for Christmas, Easter and one other,” Wilson said. “My fiancee told me, ‘I could never marry a man who wasn’t serious about their faith’, so I said ‘Let’s go to church.’”

Wilson said what followed was a conversion experience that inspired Wilson to learn more, eventually leading to the seminary and ordination.

He started working at Church of the Redeemer as a curate assisting priests eight years ago. He was later a priest associate and then senior priest associate.

“I’ve done everything here from wash the dishes to lead the annual meeting,” Wilson said.

The Rev. Fred Robinson, the church’s rector for 26 years, retired a couple years ago, sparking a national search for a replacement. Wilson jokes they ultimately went with the inside man for the job. He’s had his responsibilities for a year but didn’t have the ceremonial service and reception until recently.

His focus since the beginning of his time as rector has been to

increase membership. He said that while other churches seemed to slow their engagement during the pandemic, he and staff worked hard on outreach and accessibility to attract new followers.

“Most organizations, whether they’re big companies or even parish churches, struggle on a day-to-day basis keeping their mission the actual mission,” Wilson said. “We find everything is just an emergency when it’s really not. There’s a constant effort that we put in on stepping back and staying focused on the core mission, which is growth and renewal. That seems so obvious, but it’s elusive.”

He takes pride in his church having gained 100 followers in 2020 and said he hopes to see that number increase.

“We actually asked people to join our parish,” Wilson said.

Larry and Dawn Labanics had been looking for a new dog for months.

The retired couple moved to the Bradenton area from Atlanta a little more than a year ago and have spent half of that time looking for a sibling dog to go along with their small dog, Hope. They were hoping for a similar dog in size, but routinely checking local shelter websites made it clear that small dogs were in high demand.

Constant refreshing of the Humane Society of Sarasota County page finally paid off. The Labanics saw a listing for Tilly, a pug-terrier mix. She was the right size and looked just like their other dog. It seemed like a perfect fit.

Tilly, though, wasn’t coming from a local resource exactly. She was on her way to the Humane Society of Sarasota County all the way from Louisiana. Shortly after she arrived at the Sarasota shelter, the Labanics picked her up and welcomed her into their home.

“We’re glad we were able to help out,” Larry Labanics said. “It seemed like a lot of (shelters and animals) were in a bad place. Giving her a place was good for us.”

The Humane Society has been busy taking in various cats and dogs from Louisiana shelters that were damaged or disrupted from Hurricane Ida. More than 10 animals were being delivered to the shelter each week. “(Louisiana shelters) have no electricity, no running water.

Animals are in crates stacked on top of each other,” said Rebecca Gustafson, HSSC’s senior director of operations. “But more and more animals are coming in each

day, so they’re working as hard as they can to empty the space for the ones coming in. It’s a constant flow of animals.”

The Humane Society has worked in the past with the Florida Association of Animal Welfare Organizations to coordinate receiving various animals throughout the response. Staff typically have a couple days before the animals arrive to find shelter space, organize medical and vet teams, and prepare for the influx.

This hurricane response, in some ways, was easier for HSSC. Staff were able to utilize the new center and its larger kennel space to take in more animals than they had before. It also helps that animals are arriving from shelters with their vaccines up to date and medical information already available, rather than a situation like a hoarder with too many pets.

Vet staff have been at the center five days a week welcoming new animals, neutering them and getting them ready for adoption.

“The faster the animals get adopted, the more we can take in, so having an extra kennel space really helps with these types of cases,” Gustafson said. “Now we can take large amounts of animals instead of just a few.”

TRIBUTES Chuck Barbare 1972-2021 Charles Richard “Chuck” Barbare, 49, of North Port, FL, passed away on September 29th at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, due to complications of COVID-19. He was in the loving arms of his wife, Audrey.

Chuck was born on Sept. 16, 1972, in Miami, to Bea Eisenbach.

Bea’s husband, Sam, came into Chuck’s life when Chuck was a teenager and left a lasting impression of guidance that would help him become a better person.

As a young man, Chuck enjoyed many meaningful friendships. He also became a semi-professional billiards player.

In his 20s, he entered the next stage of his life, where he became part of the Gorman Company — which would become his career and legacy for over 20 years. He rose from delivery driver to warehouse manager to profit center manager and then on to outside sales. Successful as a businessman, it was his work in building relationships within his community where he thrived. He lived in the quiet moments with those he knew, seeking to love, uplift and leave them better off for having met him. His passion was to provide the best possible life for everyone. That’s especially true for his family. His presence as a husband, father, mentor and friend will be deeply missed.

TRIBUTES Kathryn Wendt Hannon 1944-2021 Kathy was born on July 16, 1944 in Pittsburg, Kansas and died in her home Sept. 11, 2021. She was an especially loving wife, sister, aunt, great aunt, friend to many and a loving mother to all lost, distressed and broken people (Psalms 34:18) and animals.

Kathy was a resident of Sarasota since 1952 and graduated from Riverview High School in 1962. Unfortunately, she suffered severe neck and back injuries in a car accident at the end of her senior year, which eventually forced her withdrawal from FSU in her sophomore year and abandonment of her dream of teaching.

Her injuries grievously worsened so that she became a spastic-plagued near-invalid: she could barely stand or walk. Local doctors gave up on helping her; but she finally found, she said with God’s help, a Dr. Troup (sic) of Tampa, Florida: Dr. Troup had been one of the first to perfect Lumbar Laminectomy Surgery. She required two such operations (very lengthy) to correct what Dr. Troup discovered to have been a nearly severed sciatic nerve and a severely impacted spinal cord: she credited Dr. Troup with saving her life.

She started walking again and entered the workforce: Kathy quite naturally gravitated to women’s fashion in retail sales where, with an eye for color, design, fashion and high fashion, she was quickly advanced. She was first with Montgomery Roberts, ’64-’69, where she was promoted to junior buyer and fashion coordinator, then on to Westmoreland’s on St. Armands (’69-’78), where she was fashion coordinator, and finally the Yellow Bird, (’78-’84), where she quickly became an indispensable employee, friend and confidant to JoAnne and Hazel who were fixtures of the St. Armands retail scene for many years.

During this period she performed and sang in “Susannah,” “La Traviata” and “Amahl” with the old Asolo Opera Guild, now Sarasota Opera; “Brigadoon” with the Sarasota Players; and four years with the Sarasota Choral Society’s “The Messiah”.

But she was forced to abandon yet another of her dreams due to recurrent back pain that severely limited her stage presence and voice delivery.

During her last couple of years at Yellow Bird she took private sculpting lessons with Leslie Thomas Posey, a local artist and sculpture of some national renown. Once

again, her eye for color, design and natural lines had been quickly noticed by Les; so, he hired her to help finish art projects during his last years. While with Les, she met struggling artists who were moonlighting at Ringling Bros. Wardrobe Dept. in Venice and Prop Dept. in Sarasota. She was fascinated by their tales of the circus which prompted her, with her curiosity and congeniality, to start working part time in Ringling’s Wardrobe Dept. ’85 to ’87.

But once again, her eye for color, design and fashion was quickly noticed by Arthur Boccia, the in-house costume designer for all the Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey combined shows. After having been repeatedly called on by Arthur for this and that increasingly esoteric assignment, all were a test it seems, she became his assistant in ’87.

Now, Arthur was both a genius and an artist and could be cruelly unforgiving, brashly overbearing and demanding at times, especially when nearing a hard deadline. So Kathy was oftentimes Arthur’s diplomat, courier and interlocutor with all costume designers and houses in New York City and Florida, and with all circus performers, unit managers and more than a couple of times Kenneth Feld, himself.

So, assistant to Arthur was sometimes a demanding task, but she was an adept at facilitation of good working relationships.

Over 14 years with Arthur, Kathy worked on 14 “Ringling Circus” and 20 “Disney on Ice” shows, and other entertainment projects as well.

She interfaced directly with all circus performers and skaters of the ice shows, and she developed a special relationship with almost all of them, including the animals. Due to her fearlessness and love of all living things she took the greatest joy in measuring and fitting all the elephants for their new blankets every season, a job NO ONE from wardrobe had ever wanted before Kathy joined the circus (elephants are big, potentially cantankerous and they do stink, but Kathy said, they didn’t stink as bad as some people). She loved all the

elephants and talked to each of them as individuals while measuring and fitting them. She had a special nickname for every one of them (from assorted fairy tales), each of whom she got to know a little better from season to season, for they each strongly exhibited individual personalities.

With PETA’s continued harassment of Ringling Bros. from city to city in the late ’90s, the rise of Cirque du Soleil and the public’s fickle and fleeting uproar about animal abuse it became apparent to Ringling management that the new generation’s regard for traditional entertainments was seriously eroding; thus, the Felds, quite necessarily, tried to accommodate the circus to changing trends. So Arthur’s easily recognizable and traditionally classic costume designs were replaced in the 2001 season with a radically new look from outside designers, and Arthur and Kathy were utilized less and less with each passing month until released in 2003.

Arthur and Kathy’s hearts had been utterly broken, but they both remained stoically silent about their fates as they intimately knew, more than most others, that the Felds had long been under tremendous pressure to attempt the prolongation of a 19th century entertainment platform into the 21st century. It quite simply could not have been done by John Ringling, himself; and it probably cost the Felds dearly to attempt to revivify the three ring circus.

They eventually surrendered to the obvious in 2017, leaving hundreds of performers and staff with broken hearts, just as had Arthur and Kathy suffered fourteen years earlier.

With her eye for color, design, fashion and high fashion untapped, she yearned to get back into retail and working with the buying public. From her Westmoreland’s days she had learned to treat every casual shopper as though they were a long-time friend and valued buyer, which was not an easy thing to do, with aplomb. So, she started working part-time downstairs for a friend of hers (Suzy), but then with the passing of Suzy, she jumped at the chance to work at Nikki Sedacca’s gallery when it took over Suzy’s space on Palm Avenue.

She loved it there because she absolutely loved Nikki for her charm and her talent in the gathering and the designing of a stunningly unique and wide range of jewelry, fine jewelry, art and art to wear, etc.

Nikki’s select product range, combined with her gallery’s easy ambiance and low(no)-pressure sales, attracted and cultivated both the mid and higher-end clientele. In proof of this fact, Kathy often related interfacing with some quite recognizable personalities, such as one

shopper who had been window shopping on a gloomy and rainy Saturday morning (as I recall): it was early, but sensing a sale Kathy unlocked the door and beckoned him to come in. Then Kathy proceeded to convert this intrigued window shopper into an avid buyer.

His name? Stephen King.

When his name had been necessarily volunteered at transaction’s end, Kathy did not raise an eyebrow, but simply replied, “Thank You, Mr. King. … … And I really love your work.” It was only at sales end, that she admitted having recognized him.

You see, she had instantly recognized him when first seeing his face pressed against the glass, but throughout their exchange had never let on. Her polite deference to his obvious wish to avoid public clamor was the result of her training at Montgomery Roberts and especially at Westmoreland’s under Mr. Westmoreland: Westmoreland’s had an incredibly famous clientele when she was there in the ’60s and ’70s (many from Casey Key and Boca Grande —if you catch the drift).

Kathy has now joined that long list of Sarasotans who will be missed by many, but most especially by me: her husband, friend, confidant, buddy, consort, lover, warrior in arms: she was the most artistic, brave, brilliant, beguilingly innocent and lovely soul I ever knew; and an absolutely fantastic chef of the finest dishes.

Given the current state of affairs in this nation and earth, what she wrote in the opening stanza of her last poem may prove to be of note, to all of us: My Last Farewell Oh, mourners. Pray not for me, But pray for thine and thee.

T

his year’s rivalry game between Riverview and Sarasota was supposed to be must-see.

Both teams entered at 4-1, and with both teams in the same district, there was more on the line besides bragging rights. There was also a heaping of social media chatter between the two schools in the lead-up to the game.

Instead of must-see, though, it became something the around 8,000 fans in attendance have seen for a decade: a convincing Rams win. Riverview shut out Sarasota 35-0 at the Ram Bowl, establishing the Rams (5-1) as one an elite team on the Gulf Coast and the Sailors (4-2) as a team improving but not quite ready for the big stage.

The Rams’ defense has been smothering in 2021. Since the team’s season-opening 35-6 road loss to Seminole High on Aug. 27 — a game, Coach Josh Smithers likes to note, played without the benefit of a preseason tuneup — Riverview has allowed 39 points in five games, or just over one touchdown (7.8 points) a game,

winning them all. That includes a 27-7 road win against Lake Gibson High on Sept. 24 in which the Rams held Braves senior running back Jaylon Glover, a consensus three-star Utah commit, to 50 yards and no touchdowns.

“The first few games, we played some great competition, and our defense was great then,” Smithers said. “So coming into the Sarasota game, we had no doubt that our defense would shut them out.”

Sarasota senior quarterback Lance Trippel is having a strong season but managed to complete nine of 16 passes for 89 yards.

The yardage total can in part be explained by the game’s running clock, which began in the third quarter. But it’s also a result of how stifling the Rams were.

Riverview gets it done at all three levels. Senior defensive lineman Eli Renick excels at pressuring quarterbacks; senior linebacker Tyre Smith leads the team with 42 tackles; sophomore defensive back Charles Lester III locks down the opposing teams’ top option. At their best, the Rams don’t bend. Consistently forcing three-and-outs helps the team win the field position battle.

That was exemplified in the

Sarasota game. Riverview entered the game looking to sustain drives.

The Rams ended up not having to sustain many at all — instead, they took advantage of the opportunities Sarasota gave them, including a bad snap on a punt that gave Riverview the ball at the Sailors’ 11-yard line. Sarasota also failed on fourth down from its own 25 in the third quarter, setting up the Rams’ fifth touchdown.

The Rams have now won 10 straight against the Sailors, outscoring Sarasota 336-110 in those games.

The game was a stumble for the Sailors, who entered it expecting to break the Rams’ win streak.

Sarasota Coach Brody Wiseman said the Sailors made too many mistakes to compete against programs of Riverview’s caliber.

In addition to the bad snaps and failed fourth downs, the Sailors racked up 95 yards in penalties.

“It’s a different level of football,” Wiseman said. “When you play teams like that, you have got to execute and play good football.

We didn’t do that.

“We’ve still got a lot in front of us, and we can keep improving as a program. Unfortunately, we’re not there yet.”

Rosey futures Sisters rely on chemistry to build a strong following on their fitness brand’s social media pages.

T

he next time you’re feeling stuck in a workout rut, you don’t need to turn to expensive personal trainers to break a goodfeeling sweat.

You can just fire up your Instagram app and look at the Rosey Times Two fitness account, supporting a fast-growing Sarasota brand in the process.

Amanda Rosenberg, 23, and Ashley Thompson, 29, are sisters, Riverview High grads who played tennis at the school.

(Their mother, Kathy Rosenberg, is still the school’s tennis coach.)

They started Rosey Times Two in September 2019 after coworkers at the pair’s real estate job would ask them for recommendations on workout routines and healthy recipes. They had a posting plan and thought their posts could potentially be popular if they were smart about it, following trends and working within Instagram’s constantly changing algorithm to maximize their reach.

They were right. In the two

years since, the sisters have built their Instagram account to have 63,000 followers — including “Riverdale” and “Hustlers” actress Lili Reinhart, whom the sisters said first followed the account when its reach was only a few thousand. The brand focuses on promoting balanced lifestyles, they said. That means eating ice cream and drinking beer are not discouraged, as long as they are in moderation. Counter those things with consistent workouts that build function strength and a healthy meal plan, and you’re on the right track.

Thompson said the majority of their income stems from advertisements. Brands, such as Bombas, a trendy sock company, will pay the sisters to show off their products in videos and photos.

The sisters also created two sixweek workout guides that people can purchase for $45.99 as well as a food prep guide for $9.99.

In the future, the sisters plan on releasing a product line, though they can’t yet say what those products will be. Thompson and Rosenberg are making enough money from the venture that Rosenberg was able to quit her real estate job to focus more time on Rosey Times Two. Although Rosenberg said the decision to leave when she did might have been a bit hasty, it

worked out: Rosey Times Two is now a “six-plus-figure business,” they said.

“I would spend all my hours at our corporate job working on the Instagram, whether creating content or reaching out to brands,” Rosenberg said. “I was so invested in it. Because I was so invested, I knew I could make something happen. I moved back in with my parents so I didn’t have any expenses. If I couldn’t have done that, it wouldn’t have worked. But it was the right time (to take the risk).”

While both sisters still do other work on the side, the move to make Rosey Times Two more of a focus did pay off. Four months ago, when Instagram started putting an emphasis on Reels, its TikTok-like short-form videos, the sisters took advantage, posting a slew of them. Some, such as a July 1 video showcasing the sisters’ outfits dedicated to each day of the week, have upwards of 1.8 million views.

What sets the pair apart from other social media pages in the fitness and wellness fields? It’s a crowded marketplace, as the sisters concede. Yet Rosenberg and Thompson are managing to make a name for themselves.

is clear whenever they are on screen together. That’s not all, though. Rosenberg said their respective ages and positions in life appeal to different groups of people: Rosenberg to the fresh-out-of-college crowd, and Thompson, who got married in March and is pregnant, appeals to the mom crowd. The combination of those two groups gives the sisters’ content a wider target audience than most.

Another benefit of the business? It’s helped with the sisters’ relationship.

“Growing up, (Amanda) was my annoying little sister,”

Thompson said with a smile.

“She used to spy on me and stuff like that. When she went to college, we got a little closer, but now we don’t go a single day without seeing each other and having 25 phone calls. We’re much closer than we used to be.”

In September, the Observer checked on our football alumni doing big things at the college level. Not to leave anyone out, we’re also checking on some nonfootball alumni. Many of them are doing equally big things.

Ben Hartvigsen, a former boys state cross-country champion at Sarasota High, is a sophomore at Harvard. He finished 45th (25:13.40) out of 167 runners at the 20-team Coast-to-Coast Battle in Boston, an 8K race held Sept. 24 at Franklin Park. After having the 2020 season canceled because of the pandemic, Hartvigsen gets to return to the sport he loves.

He’s not a Sarasota “athlete,” per se, but former Cardinal Mooney High volleyball Coach

Chad Sutton is still volunteer coaching with Purdue. Sutton and the Boilermakers (11-2) are ranked No. 6 in the country as of Wednesday. This is the second season Sutton is volunteering with Purdue; last season, the Boilermakers reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to eventual champion Kentucky in straight sets.

Speaking of Kentucky volleyball, former Riverview High star Riah Walker is now a sophomore, and after playing some important minutes as a freshman on the National Championship team, she has taken on an even greater role. Walker, a libero, is averaging 3.4 digs per set, helping the Wildcats to a 9-3 record.

Former Cardinal Mooney High boys soccer player Alex Turner is a graduate student at Stetson, though he remains eligible for soccer. It’s a good thing, too: Turner has six points on the season (two goals, four assists), which is tied for third on the team. He’s seen action in all 10 of the Hatters’ games. They hold a 4-4-2 record.

The Sarasota real estate

agent has been perfectly content driving a minivan to drop off and pick up his two children at school every day. No big deal.

He had plans to spring for a new set of wheels soon but no real idea on what or when.

His son Alexander, on the other hand, is more locked into modern trends. The 9-year-old, who attends Sarasota Christian School, is an avid fan of YouTube

and its culture. Tom said he often hears his son watching YouTubers and video game streams.

One of Alexander’s favorite YouTubers is MrBeast — real name Jimmy Donaldson — who records wacky challenges and presents them to his 70 million subscribers. Among them is a challenge allowing people to keep as many $1 bills as they can carry.

He’s also known for making massive charitable contributions.

As a dad, Tom tried to explain to his son that the gifts often came with the longest of odds. But there was nothing wrong with enjoying the videos.

In this case, though, Tom was happy to have been proven wrong.

Alexander, along with more than 35,000 other viewers, recently purchased a limitedtime T-shirt from the MrBeast account. But what the Hedges didn’t know was that the purchase entered them into a giveaway for a Tesla.

Hedge’s name was chosen. He and his father are now the owners of the all-electric 2021 Model 3. The car retails between $40,000 and $56,000.

“Alexander was telling friends he was getting a Tesla, and some are saying ‘No you aren’t,” Tom said. “When we picked him up (in the new Tesla), there were kids screaming about it, and Alex walks out with this big smile on his face.”

“Everyone really likes the car,” Alexander said.

The whole point of buying the shirt was to become an “executive producer” on one of MrBeast’s videos. When Alexander entered his name and saw it appear in the credits of a later video, he and his father took a picture of the listing and considered it a job well done.

It was only a couple days later while eating at a Culver’s that they were told by friends they’d actually won a car at the end of the video.

They pulled the video back up

while waiting on their food, and lo and behold, Alexander’s name had been chosen at random by the MrBeast crew.

They remember a powerful feeling of excitement while remaining wary of a prize not yet in their possession. “(Alexander) had the biggest smile on his face but was gauging my reaction like, ‘Is this serious?’” Tom said. “We weren’t sure what to think. Something like this doesn’t happen.”

“You know how sometimes you feel you’re going to get something, but then you don’t get it?” Alexander said. “That’s how it felt.”

Tom quickly connected with some of MrBeast’s people and learned it was a legit operation.

He had entered the contest in his son’s name but signed for both him and his son for ownership at the DMV. The next thing to do, naturally, was to call his accountant to see if getting a new car in this way was financially doable — he remembers growing up watching people who won lavish prizes on “The Price is Right” but couldn’t afford the income taxes. He and his accountant concluded it would be feasible and decided to see what the effects would be when tax season rolls around.

“I was chatting with (a representative sending the car), and she joked how happy she was that I wasn’t a 16-year-old who didn’t know about tax implications,” Tom said.

The car arrived in early September, and the Hedges have spent the past few weeks getting used to their new electric ride.

They mostly use it for the same purposes — back and forth to school and sports practice or the odd trip to work or downtown.

Alexander said he most enjoys the car’s custom horn sounds, one of which resembles, well, let’s just say kids enjoy bathroom sounds — a lot.

Tom enjoys the futuristic features.

Alexander’s trips to school are different now. They’ve noticed kids point to the car.

“I’m really popular now,” he said.

It was a night of reminiscing and recognition for the organization, which celebrated decades of providing services for children with physical and mental disabilities. More than 400 supporters filled the Circus Arts Conservatory’s Sailor Circus Arena for a night of mingling, fundraising and fun.

After a social hour featuring Circus Arts Conservatory students showcasing their acrobatic abilities and unicycling through the crowds, guests settled down for dinner and the program.

A tsunami of rock musicals flooded Broadway in the late 1960s. “Hair” was, perhaps, the hairiest.

After a two-year exile in the digital deserts of YouTube, the talents of SaraSolo Productions have returned to mundane, earthly reality.

In Shakespearean terms, the troupe’s 2021 FallFest will happen at Crossings at Siesta Key on a “Pop-Up” stage.

Clara Francesca, Sylvia Day, Dennis McSorley, Paula Broadwater and other solitary savants will dance, sing, perform skits and miniplays, tell jokes and stories, and fool around.

Buddy Holly played from his heart. Alan Janes’ musical biography goes straight to the heart of the man and his music.

His portrait of the artist as a young rocker digs deeper than the cute, cuddly cliche. Holly was a nice guy with a big smile, but he was also a musical revolutionary. In his short, happy life, Holly reinvented his art form and refused to let the music industry big shots put him in a “country music” box.

Janes’ musical delivers familiar Holly hits including “Peggy Sue” and “Everyday” and a few cool tunes you’ve probably never heard of. Director Jason Cannon keeps it simple. He figures Holly would have wanted it that way.

National and local mental health practitioners and scientists will discuss new treatments, discoveries, and insights on mental health issues. Topics will include better treatments for childhood disorders, creating a trauma-informed community, the impact of COVID-19 on young people, childhood and adolescent anxiety, and the nature of depression; a Q&A will follow the program. The goals of the symposium are to raise awareness of mental health and addiction disorders and to help erase the stigma surrounding them.

Three Continuing Education (CEU) credits will be available at no charge for LCSWs, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors.
