Havdalah Halloween
Temple Emanu-El mixed ceremony with costumed fun at its annual HavadalahWeen party on Oct. 23. The Halloween party celebrated the musical Havdalah ceremony, the separation of the Sabbath with the week ahead— all with a colorful spin, of course. Families dressed their children up as firefighters, Disney characters and even Transformers for a day of activities that included crafts, treats, and ghost stories that weren’t too scary for the young ones. A notable feature was the Havdalah photo corner, where kids and families posed in the middle of a wreath.
Chess challenge
Local chess players often compete at the Manasota Chess Center, but the Oct. 16 weekend featured a special contender — a Sarasota chess grandmaster squared off against 24 players throughout the day. Pascal Charbonneau, a two-time Canadian chess champion, stopped by the club for the daylong competition, which had him bouncing from game to game and simultaneously competing with the various challengers. Charbonneau is most well known for his defeat of a former world chess champion at the 37th Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy.

uring the open comment section of Tuesday’s County Commission meeting, speakers cast aspersions on the work of Brian Goodrich, the author of two of the three maps the county is considering as it redraws district boundaries for commission elections. Two members of the public spoke in conspiratorial terms about Goodrich, who has not appeared at a commission meeting to comment on the maps he submitted. They suggested his maps were drawn with the intent of improving the odds that incumbent Commissioner Christian Ziegler, a Republican, retains his seat on the all-Republican board. The commission voted 4-1 to continue consideration of the Goodrich maps alongside a third option based on a consultant’s proposal. After the
