Siesta barks for dog park

There was a reunion of sorts at the Tuesday meeting of the Longboat Key Democratic Club. Bob Graham, former U.S. senator and Florida governor, was the guest speaker at the event. After his speech, he was surprised by a picture Sarasota County Tax Collector candidate Barbara Ford-Coates brought to the luncheon. The picture, taken in 1984, showed the event at which Graham first endorsed Ford-Coates for tax collector.

The week of Oct. 31, 1986, the song “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper was the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also the day The Old Salty Dog on Siesta Key opened it doors. On the night of Halloween, owners Judy Fryer and Philip Needs got the keys to the restaurant and opened it immediately. They used handwritten menus with prices quickly scribbled in and welcomed their first customers. To honor its 30th anniversary, The Old Salty Dog is turning back the clock and the prices on the menu. Hot dogs will start at $2, and draft beer is only $1.
