School board makes internal hire for superintendent role Courtesy rendering

fter a six-month search, the Sarasota County School Board selected an internal candidate as the district’s next superintendent Tuesday.

Todd Bowden, the district’s executive director of career, technical and adult education, will take over for Superintendent Lori White in February, pending contract negotiations.

The board praised Bowden’s work as director of Suncoast Technical College.

“There was a time not too far in the distant past when we needed to do a lot of work on that institution,” board member Jane Goodwin said.

Chairwoman Shirley Brown was the only member to advocate for another candidate, endorsing Brennan Asplen III from the St. Johns County School District.

“I think what Dr. Bowden has done at STC is wonderful,” Brown said “We still need him there.”

The board voted 4-1 to hire Bowden, with Brown dissenting.

Brown later made the vote unanimous as an act of solidarity with the new superintendent.

Construction of a Whole Foods Market and Wawa on University Parkway has begun.

Albany, Ga.-based Pellicano Co. has started clearing roughly 8 acres at University and Honore Avenue for University Station, which will also include 10,400 square feet of retail space. The 40,000-square-foot Whole Foods will be the second location for the grocery chain in Sarasota County.

Georgia-based developer S.J. Collins is overseeing the project.

The project requires the destruction of a 4.5-acre wetland area, prompting outcry from local environmental group Manasota 88. S.J. Collins bought 40 acres connected to Rye Preserve in Manatee County to serve as offsite mitigation rather than conserving wetlands on the property.

In August, a court dismissed Manasota 88’s lawsuit against Sarasota County challenging approval of the project.

FINIAL PURSUIT As Ringling College works to transform the old Sarasota High School into an art museum, some residents want the building restored down to the very last detail.

A

s Ringling College of Art and Design works to transform the historic Sarasota High School building into an art museum, some residents see an opportunity to restore a piece of the building’s past that was lost decades ago.

One of those residents, Pam Esthus McLeod, attributes her appreciation for Sarasota history to her parents.

Her father, George “Pete” Esthus, collected Sarasota memorabilia, particularly items related to Sarasota High School. He kept his collection in his Sarasota Lock & Key Shop on State Street.

Most of his collection passed to the county’s historical archives when he died, but his appreciation for Sarasota’s past remained with McLeod. However, the pieces of history she would preserve could not fit in a store. While her father preserved items related to the high school, she would advocate for the building itself — down to the smallest details.

The school closed in 2003. Left with a building with a storied past but no plans for its future, the school district contemplated

selling the property.

“Everybody knew that whoever bought that property had the right to do with the building whatever they choose,” McLeod said. “There was enormous uprising among the citizens about that because they did not want that building torn down.”

In response, the district approved a Sarasota Museum of Art plan to repurpose the building as an art museum.

Later, Ringling College absorbed the project.

Its intent was to preserve the building’s history, but McLeod noticed something missing from Ringling’s plans.

The school’s original plans show a set of ornaments called finials — small decorative sculptures at the top or corners of an object — along the center tower of the building.

Sarasota High School’s finials were removed in the 1970s due to failing structural integrity.

McLeod and a small committee, which included her mother, Diane Esthus, and former Sarasota mayors Mollie Cardamone and Lou Ann Palmer, lobbied the school district and Ringling College in 2014 regarding the importance of the ornaments.

ute, for them, the building’s preservation would not be complete without the finials.

“They are so pretty,” Esthus said. “It’s like the icing on the cake” McLeod said the group made headway in its efforts in 2015.

Sean Colson, an artist who specializes in sculpture restoration, submitted a plan to not only restore the finials, but ensure the structural integrity.

Using a formula of highstrength concrete, Colson believed he could replicate the fixtures sustainably.

However, he never heard back on his proposal.

After the preliminary phase of construction was completed in 2015, progress on the project stopped. As Ringling has paused in its efforts to renovate the building, the residents waited to revisit the finial issue.

“We keep watching,” Esthus said.

Ringling recently resumed its work, revising plans to incorporate a larger museum campus. As the project advances, McLeod and Esthus will likely resume their efforts.

Ringling will re-evaluate its lease before formalizing interior design plans, but it’s unclear if the finials will be addressed, Larry Thompson, president of Ringling College, said.

Questions still clutter the museum’s future, but McLeod remains focused on the finials.

She may seem fixated on a small detail, but she believes the cause is bigger than sculptures on an old building.

“There are, believe it or not, people who were born and raised here — I know it doesn’t feel that way anymore, very sadly,” McLeod said. “There hasn’t been, by the masses, a large focus on restoring the history. ... Not only is it one of the remaining historical buildings, so many people have so many deep-rooted memories associated with that building.”

SARASOTA HIGH SCHOOL’S LOST ART The historic Sarasota High School building housed its first pieces of art decades before Ringling’s plans for an art museum there.

Although not quite fine art, a series of sculptures decorated the school’s lobby.

Longtime Sarasota resident and Sarasota High School history enthusiast Diane Esthus said the original building featured arches on either side of the foyer. Sarasota High School’s 1937 yearbook shows several statues under each of the arches, but, according to Esthus, the openings were later closed.

The foyer was later renovated, complete with the open arches to reflect the original architecture, but the statues disappeared.

Where the statues went and why they were removed is still shrouded in mystery. Despite her many years in Sarasota, Esthus doesn’t know how the statues’ story ends.

“Things change,” she said. “We’ve wondered about it for years, and nobody knows.”

s city officials have discussed demolishing the former GWIZ building on Boulevard of the Arts, a group of Sarasota residents has quietly planned an alternate fate for the property: a museum dedicated to women’s sports.

On Saturday, Women’s Sports Museum Inc. will hold its first major public event, a fundraiser at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota.

The nonprofit is not officially committed to any particular location for the project — it’s too early to even have a solid grasp on what the museum’s collections and displays might be like. Still, the group’s board of directors has already honed in on the vacant bayfront site at 1001 Boulevard of the Arts as a fit for its needs.

Gallagher got involved with the effort a year and a half ago, when Charlotte County resident Sue Zipay began searching for architects to help make an idea she had a reality. In the 1950s, Zipay was a member of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which inspired the movie “A League of Their Own.” Now the co-owner of the Englewood Tennis Club, Zipay is also a board member of the

Shortly after Marty Rappaport moved to Siesta Key in 1987, he attended a meeting of St. Armands Circle landowners.

They talked about the need for more parking, but were pessimistic about the prospect of the city helping out.

“One gentleman got up and said, ‘My father owned property on St. Armands. We’re probably the oldest landowners out here, and I can tell you quite honestly, it’s not going to happen,’” Rap-

paport said.

If other property owners were defeated, Rappaport saw untapped potential in St. Armands and was devoted to changing the status quo.

By 1991, he formed an official landowners association. In 1995, the city began developing a new parking lot on St. Armands. For nearly three decades, he devoted his free time to improving the Circle.

This month, with the city preparing to build a Circle parking garage, Rappaport announced he was selling his property on the Circle and stepping down as co-chairman of the St. Armands Business Improvement District.

“It’s bittersweet, but I think the time has come,” Rappaport said.

“Most BIDs have a paid administrator running the district,” St. Armands Circle Association Executive Director Diana Corrigan said. “Marty never took a salary. I don’t know anybody who’s going to take that amount of time to volunteer what he did.”

Rappaport won’t walk away from his work altogether, but he thinks his vision for the Circle is finally close to reality.

“I think now, the focus is going to be promotion,” Rappaport said.

“Promote it locally, promote it nationally, and promote it internationally.”

“I don’t think there’s a single person that’s done more for St. Armands than you,” said BID chairman Gavin Meshad.

The parking garage project is Rappaport’s last major undertaking on St. Armands. Circle property owners had advocated for a garage since the mid-’90s, but residents resisted the proposal.

Rappaport knew the city wanted broad support for building the garage. As a result, he arranged a proposal that incorporated the desires of residents. In addition to building a garage, the city also plans to bury power lines and improve medians on St. Armands.

If you’re an independent voter or still undecided on the local races, this might help you decide. Reader beware: We always favor candidates who back the freedom agenda.

O

h, there are other elections?

Who knew?

It would be easy to forget.

But be assured, the other elections can be — and, in some cases, will be — equally as consequential as whom we elect to occupy the White House.

The point here is to emphasize that, even if you’re not going to vote Nov. 8 for any of the presidential candidates (understandable), at least cast your votes on the “down ballot” — for all of those races and questions on both sides of your ballot sheet. The outcomes will make a difference.

To help those who are neither Republicans nor Democrats and who still may be undecided on the Sarasota and Manatee counties’ races, we offer the following recommendations on the candidates.

Mind you, regular readers of this page already know our political philosophy — unwavering support for candidates who subscribe to or come closest to subscribing to: n Pro-laissez-faire capitalism; n Fewer, lower and flat taxes; n Dismantling and destroying the regulatory Leviathan that adversely affects and controls every level of our lives. n Following the U.S. Constitution, as written by the Founding Fathers.

None of the major party candidates on the Sarasota and Manatee ballots lines up perfectly with our freedom agenda, but there are those who lean that way.

FEDERAL

U.S. Senate

Incumbent Sen. Marco Rubio will never live down his broken promise: that he would not run for re-election if his presidential bid this year failed.

How can anyone trust what he says now?

But the alternative — Democrat Patrick Murphy — is worse. Standard-issue liberal platform: He wants to “make our economy more fair” (“make” means government force, coercion and redistribution; punish success). He wants to force the $15 minimum wage. He sees no reason to change the bankrupt Ponzi schemes of Social Security or Medicare. And he is a front-row rider on Obama’s climate-change bandwagon.

Rubio, in contrast, at least understands economics, capitalism and how government intervention means less freedom for everyone.

Perhaps the most Rubio has going for him is that he is an incumbent Republican senator. Indeed, if you’re an independent and you worry about what would result from a Hillary Clinton and Democrat-controlled Senate and House, that is ample reason to re-elect Rubio.

(Memo to Rubio: If you’re re-elected, we hope you take seriously your obligation to earn back Floridians’ trust.)

We recommend: Marco Rubio

U.S. Congress-District 16

You have to love Democrat congressional candidate Jan Schneider. She never gives up, and she is steadfast in her principles. This is her fifth attempt to win a congressional seat.

And we’ll give her this: She is a moderate Democrat — at least compared to her party’s standard bearer.

Nonetheless, she is on the Democrat Party team: higher taxes on the top 1%; gun control; modifying Obamacare, not junking it.

Contrast that with incumbent Vern Buchanan, going for his sixth term.

While Buchanan hasn’t become a camera-loving media star and household political name, he has

FLORIDA

State Senate-District 23

New College political science professor and Democrat Senate candidate Frank Alcock favors Florida expanding federal Medicaid under Obamacare; is anti-school vouchers; “advocate(s) for a living wage” (code for government-driven higher minimum wages); says he wants “cleanenergy investments” (“investments” in government speak typically mean taxes and subsidies); and has written this about guns: “… we need to reconsider what rights make sense for a citizen’s ability to defend themselves …”

Now, we know that Alcock’s Republican opponent, Rep. Greg Steube, has been widely criticized for his efforts to expand concealed-carry gun permits to college campuses. And we all know — and he should know it, too — that issue will go nowhere in Tallahassee.

But we also know Steube stands on the other side of the philosophical fence than Alcock. Steube is a constitutionalist, anti-corporate welfare, low-tax, low-regulation, free-market, pro-competitive education system legislator.

We recommend: Greg Steube

House-District 72

It should give us hope when we see a young, successful, female CEO

wanting to take her common-sense, market-oriented and fiscal business skills to Tallahassee.

We’re referring to Republican Alexandra “Alex” Miller, 42, who for the past 15 years has been the CEO of $33 million (revenue), Sarasota-based Mercedes Medical.

Add to that mother of two middleschool-age sons; an elected member of the Sarasota Memorial Hospital District Board; and board member on not-for-profits. Altogether: wellrounded, conservative pragmatism.

But the best for taxpayers: She knows what goes into meeting a weekly payroll.

We recommend: Alex Miller

House-District 73

Talk about two widely different choices — and two deeply rooted, patriotic Americans: Democrat James Golden and Republican Joe Gruters.

Both are Florida natives.

Golden is from the Vietnam War generation (he’s a veteran), while Gruters is part of Gen X. Both have been in politics for two decades.

Golden served twice on the Bradenton City Council. Gruters has been entrenched in the leadership of the Republican Party of Sarasota County and serves as vice chairman of the Republican Party of Florida.

Golden, a pastor, is soft-spoken; Gruters, an accountant, is outspoken.

Philosophically, they stand where you would expect on most issues. But here’s a big difference: In Tallahassee, the success of a lawmaker hinges to a significant degree on his ability to connect and influence the leaders of the party in power. Republicans are in power; Gruters knows just about every Republican.

Two more advantages: 1) It takes moxie and hard work to become the vice chair of Florida’s GOP; 2) Gruters is not a status-quo Republican: He took the job of heading up Donald Trump’s Florida campaign. Talk about anti-establishment.

We recommend: Joe Gruters

Supreme Court & District Court of Appeal

Florida’s constitution and judicial system allow voters to decide whether Supreme Court justices and Appeal Court judges have performed ethically, impartially and are qualified. To retain is not whether they are liberal, conservative or legislating from the bench.

In this year’s retention elections, two of the Supreme Court justices — Charles Canady and Ricky L. Polston — are considered the most conservative on the bench. Chief Justice Jorge Labarga, meanwhile, has sided with the liberal wing of the court on several cases.

None of them has behaved or judged so badly as to be disqualified.

We recommend: Yes to retain all Supreme Court and District Court of Appeal judges.

SARASOTA COUNTY

Clerk of Court

Typically, 30 years in the same elected public office is too long. For that matter, 30 years in any job is sure to result in diminished performance (although wisdom would likely make up for what might be lost in energy).

That’s the charge against Sarasota County Clerk of Court Karen Rushing from her opponent. The Republican incumbent was first elected in 1987.

That length of time has spurred Todd Barton to challenge Rushing for the Democrats. Barton is a 30-year court administrator who touts a record of innovation and is critical of

Rushing’s speed of implementing technology.

But voters, beware. Barton may be innovative with court management, but he comes nowhere close to having the experience of Rushing in other essential crucial responsibilities: treasury management of a $1 billion enterprise, finance management; bonding financing; auditing and preparing comprehensive financial statements for the SEC and state.

What’s more, there’s a message when voters return you to office over 30 years, and when your 66 state peers rely on you to represent them before the Legislature (seven consecutive years) and name you clerk of the year three times.

As we often say, elections are referenda on incumbents’ performance. It’s pretty obvious Sarasota County voters have been quite satisfied.

We recommend: Karen Rushing

Tax Collector

The race for tax collector mirrors that of the Clerk of Courts.

Incumbent Democrat Barbara FordCoates has been elected and held that office since 1984.

Her challenger is a 30-year retired Army lieutenant colonel, Republican James Bender.

Just as Karen Rushing has distinguished herself among clerk peers, so has FordCoates for operational leadership — not only among Florida tax collectors but among national tax collectors as well.

Her resume shows decades of leadership in her field statewide and nationally, and she has been equally involved as a leader in Sarasota County not-for-profits.

Rarely do we recommend Democrats for elected office. But in this case, the tax collector’s position is not about political philosophy; it’s about customer service.

Ford-Coates has an impeccable track record and continues to deliver.

We recommend: Barbara FordCoates

County Commission

The generational transition is underway, and this race typifies it: The Old Guard local Democratic pol, former Sarasota Mayor Fredd “Glossie” Atkins versus a rising Republican businessman Mike Moran. Ages: 64 and 47, respectively.

Moran may not have the name recognition that Atkins does, but he has proven to be a pragmatic thinker in his roles as a governor-appointed member of the Southwest Florida Water Management District and as a member of the Sarasota County Planning Commission.

Better still, he brings the experience that comes from starting, growing and

was CEO of a failed bank, Flagship Bank, and has the backing of developers. These are especially inhibitive when he wants to represent the district that encompasses the most anti-growth sentiment in the county — Manatee’s barrier islands.

That leaves two independents — both financial advisers, Matt Bower, a member of the Manatee County Planning Commission, and David Zaccagnino, a Holmes Beach commissioner for nine years.

Zaccagnino is respected for consistently demonstrating fiscal responsibility and trying to balance property rights and anti-growth influences. Bower, however, led efforts to stop the Long Bar Pointe development and sides with strong antigrowther Joe McClash.

Two caveats to Zaccagnino: He can’t make up his mind — he was a Republican, then a Democrat, now an independent.

More concerning: He has pledged support for “Manasota Move to Amend” — an effort to amend the U.S. Constitution “to state that corporations do not have the same rights as people; that money is not a form of protected free speech; and making this happen in Sarasota and Manatee counties.” That’s a disqualifier.

We recommend: Steve Jonsson

ALERT: DEMOCRATS’ CHARTER REVIEW SLATE Not until general election time does Sarasota’s elected Charter Review Board show up on voters’ radars. And even then, voters typically have little notion of the amount of metaphorical gunpowder the Charter Review Board has at its disposal.

The board’s job is to review and propose changes to the county charter, its constitution. It can submit these changes to voters with a vote of twothirds of the board.

For this election cycle, the Democrats have put up a slate of five candidates.

They mischief in mind: • As of press time, three of the five — Arlene Sweeting, Karen CollinsFleming and Mike Shlasko — told the Observer they would back efforts to try to convert Sarasota County from five countywide districts to single-member districts.

This, of course, would make it easier for Democrats to break the Republican dominance over county officeholders.

What’s more, all five candidates have pledged support for “Manasota Movement to Amend.” Here’s the pledge: “Amend the U.S. Constitution to state that corporations do not have the same rights as people; that money is not a

selling a successful professional employee organization. Involved with Rotary and Guardian Ad Litem in the Venice area for more than a decade, Moran represents smart, new blood to face Sarasota County’s challenges.

Hospital Board

The defeat of two incumbent Republican hospital board members — Marguerite Malone and John de Jongh — in the August primary shook what heretofore had been a well-functioning board. That created two open seats, and three incumbents up for election.

The incumbents are proven, accomplished board members; no change is required. The open seats — At Large Seat 1 and At Large Seat 3 — feature three nurses and a businessman. There are plenty of businessmen already on the board. Seat 1 candidate Sharon Wetzler DePeters, a Republican, and Seat 3 Democrat Cheryl Brandi have stellar nursing and clinical credentials that would enhance the board.

Florida Senate candidate, Democrat Frank Alcock, and Manatee County Commission District 3 candidate, Independent David Zaccagnino, also have signed on to the Manasota Movement to Amend pledge.

Alcock pledged, as did the others, that he would use his office if elected to support the movement “by passing resolutions, proposing legislation” and “to use my influence in the Legislature and through the Florida State Constitution (Revision Commission; Citizen Initiative) to reform our campaign finance system.”

Worth noting: Public records show a political action committee, essentially the same as a corporation, formed for Alcock’s behalf: Friends of Frank Alcock Inc.

School Board

DISTRICT 1 Edward Viltz, far and away, has the experience, intelligence and wisdom that would enhance the long-struggling Manatee County School Board: former COO of an IT company that grew from $26 million to $68 million during his watch; the first CEO of the Public Interest Registry, a not-forprofit that grew and managed five million .ORG domain names on the internet. Since coming to Manatee County in 2009, Viltz has served as a faculty member and consultant at the Dream Success Charter School, helping develop and implement a strategic plan that brought the school’s performance from an “F” in 2010 to an “A” in 2012.

MANATEE COUNTY County Commission

DISTRICT 7 - AT-LARGE When incumbent Republican Commissioner Betsy Benac won election four years ago, she brought valuable insights to the board. She worked for three decades in the private sector as a land planner, giving her firsthand experience with growth issues from both perspectives — private and public sectors.

This experience manifested itself well in her performance as an even-handed commissioner. Manatee voters should keep her expertise, commitment and thoughtfulness on the board.

We recommend: Betsy Benac

DISTRICT 3 Manatee voters elected Dave “Watchdog” Miner to the school board at the right time — when voters were desperate for transparency and reform. He made his contribution.

That time has passed. The makeup of the board is moving toward building and rebuilding relationships in the community. As Miner was suited for his role four years ago, Misty Servia is perfectly suited for this next phase for the school board.

We recommend: Misty Servia

DISTRICT 3 Too bad for Manatee County taxpayers that incumbent Commissioner John Chappie is retiring. His departure is creating a gaping vacuum that likely won’t be filled at the same standard.

The man believed the ticket was a $200 winner, but the employee only gave him $20. The employee said she scanned the ticket, and it was only worth $20. The man was upset the employee would not give him back his ticket to inspect it. An officer gave the man the ticket, and he confirmed it was worth $20.

The man said the alleged intruder broke the window and the door to the bedroom he was sleeping in. The property owner said the brother was in the process of being evicted and that he was not supposed to have guests, although the brother had not signed any lease agreement. The officer tracked the phone to the intersection of Gulfstream Avenue and Tamiami Trail and found the phone sitting in the roadway in front of the Unconditional Surrender statue. The officer speculated that he accidentally left his phone on top of his vehicle while making an arrest and that it fell off the car when he was transporting the suspect.

Triathlete Linda Bayne follows her own rules to victory.

A

self-proclaimed “punk rock hippie” has qualified to represent the United States in the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga, Tenn., in September 2017.

Even though Sarasota’s Linda Bayne, 54, likes to play life by her own rules, her competitive spirit has taken her to the top levels of her sport.

“I don’t believe in the pettiness of society,” said Bayne, who has lived in Sarasota for 10 years. “You know that you have to work a certain amount of hours a week, and you have to do everything a specific way in order to have a successful life. I don’t believe that. I believe you can have a successful life if you don’t follow the rules.”

Bayne, who once qualified for an international rollerblading competition while living in France for a five-year period, doesn’t intend to get caught up in her endeavors, such as the triathlon, but her personality drives her toward them. She rejects the idea of someone telling her she can’t do something, and she is also naturally competitive.

The combination of those two traits challenges her to win at everything she does.

She initially started running just to stay in shape. She was also trying to quit smoking, so that helped. Bayne kept running casual for 15 years, but then a former training partner persuaded her to run in the 1984 Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, a 10K, in front of 55,000 people. Her competitive spirit started to rise.

“I got really hooked on speed.

That sounds like a drug, and it sort of is,” she said.

Bayne’s first triathlon was the Longboat Key Triathlon six years ago. In her mind, it wasn’t a big step up. She had the running part down, and she swam in college at Georgia State for a few years. The biking section would be her biggest challenge.

She doesn’t like going fast on a bike. She has had to avoid everything from a pair of old boots to a dead fish while on her bike. She did “horrible” on the bike in the Longboat Key event.

Then, she watched as one of her friends passed her on the bike.

“I said to myself, ‘I’m never going to let that happen again,’” Bayne said. “I don’t like people beating me.”

Bayne stuck with the triathlons and started winning. USA Triathlon selects the top 10% of each age group to compete in national competitions.

On Sept. 25, she raced in an Ironman 70.3 qualifier in Augusta, Ga. It was the most challenging race of her career. The hilly nature of the course used up much of her energy during the bike ride. The 90-degree heat made running seven 10-minute miles nearly impossible.

“On mile six, I said to myself, ‘I just want to quit,” Bayne said.

She didn’t quit, despite her quads burning and dehydration affecting her focus, and finished

in 5 hours, 25 minutes and 18 seconds. She crossed the finish line and went back to her hotel to shower. It wasn’t until later she realized she finished second in her age group. She had qualified for the World Championships.

Despite her freewheeling nature, Bayne is serious about her routines, getting up each day at 5:30 a.m. for exercise. She has a smoothie when finished, then breakfast at 10 a.m. She snacks on handfuls of peanuts or other nutritious treats during the day, then eats dinner at 6 p.m. She goes for a walk, rewards herself with ice cream, then gets to bed by 9 p.m.

“She gets hungry,” said Ren Hardman Schrock, Bayne’s massage therapist and fellow member of the Sarasota Storm triathlon club. “She has to eat, and eat

certain food. If not, it’s like the world’s ending.”

Storm member Nicole Buckley gave more testament about Bayne’s dedication.

While on the beach for a stroll, she spotted Bayne swimming and went over to say hello. She expected a friendly response.

“I am training,” Bayne shouted at her friend, then continued swimming.

She later apologized.

Bayne brings the same intensity to competition of any kind.

Her life is unpredictable, but one thing is for sure: She will never stop exploring what she’s capable of doing.

“Before I push up daisies, I want to push my body as far as it will go,” Bayne said. “I feel like Jack LaLanne. I want a vibrant life, and I want it to be full of adventure.”

Father’s memory makes Senior Night memorable

given loving speeches to the departing players, it was time for the national anthem. As the American flag was proudly displayed at center court, the gym fell silent. After a few moments, a chorus of voices from the crowd sang the anthem a capella.

It was impossible to avoid goosebumps. I don’t know quite how to describe it, but there was something in the air at Cardinal Mooney. A warm presence. The universe was not going to let the Cougars lose — not that night.

They won 3-0, with Annie and the rest of the senior class leading the way. After the game, the senior class jumped for joy, hugged and cried together. It was a night they’ll always remember, and I imagine I will as well.

“I always have this feeling when I play that he’s watching me,” Annie said. “But tonight was just … especially when I looked over at the corner where everyone was. I could feel him.

The sense of his spirit was definitely with me. I love him so much, and I miss him more than anything. I just hope that I’m making him proud down here.”

When it was Annie’s turn to walk, she saw the surprise waiting for her. A stream of emotions flooded through her: Anxiety at first, before she had time to take in the scene. Then shock, followed by joy, along with a few tears.

“When I walked out, my mom was like, ‘There’s so many people here for you,’” Shaw said.

“I said, ‘Really, like family?’ and she said, ‘Family and a lot of special people.’ Then I saw the T-shirts. I broke down when I realized what was happening. It was so special, and I’m so grateful for all the people who made this happen.

“I’m just overwhelmed with love and happiness.”

Laurie Shaw made sure to check with the families of the other five Cougar seniors before putting the spotlight on Annie.

They didn’t mind at all. They were happy to have a full gym of support on Senior Night and knew it would make Annie happy.

“All six of the seniors are best friends,” Annie Shaw said. "We’ve been best friends since freshman year. It’s such a special bond. We’re not just a bunch of seniors playing volleyball together. We’ve grown up together.”

even days after the 10th anniversary of her father’s death, Cardinal Mooney volleyball’s Annie Shaw walked onto the court for her Senior Night celebration.

In the months prior, she had told her mother, Laurie Shaw, that she was worried about this night. She didn’t want to be the only senior not accompanied by a father. Determined not to let her daughter feel alone, Laurie Shaw went into action.

Annie’s father, Chris Shaw, spent 18 years in the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, working the last eight as a narcotics detective. He was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2005. He fought for 18 months but died Oct. 3, 2006. He was beloved by his peers, whom he considered less his co-workers and more his “blue family.” It was that blue family Laurie turned to when she wanted to surprise her daughter.

Before the Senior Night game against North Port, there was an official presentation of colors.

Then, during senior introductions, members of the sheriff’s office lined the path to the court on either side, dressed in full uniform. Laurie Shaw and the school also made T-shirts in Chris Shaw’s honor. The front of the shirt reads “His courage is our strength,” while the back features his badge, number 609.

Attendees tasted chili cooked by 15 stations in Manatee and Sarasota counties. Returning champion Station 11 displayed the chili bean trophy in its booth with a New Orleans Mardi Gras theme. Station 11 hoped the 2015 winning recipe would be enough to regain the title.

“We kept the recipe the same,” said Dennis Jackson, Station 11. “We figured why mess up a good thing? There is more bourbon and beer though.”

Judges declared Southern Manatee Fire Rescue the overall winners and people’s choice winner for its hazmat chili.

riends from another state were visiting the week of the first presidential debate.

They are staunch supporters of the other candidate (fill in the blank). My husband and I fretted for weeks. Could we watch it together? What if we got in an argument? What if we did get in an argument and — worst-case scenario — they left? All of this worrying was stressing us out. I actually had a nightmare about it. My husband was reviewing his 45-year-old friendship. We finally resolved that we could agree to disagree. More about that later.

Toward the middle of the debate week, a national Monmouth University poll was released. Seven in 10 registered voters said the presidential election has brought out the worst in people (just 4% said this elec-

tion has brought out the best in people), with a majority of respondents maintaining that the harsh rhetoric in politics is unjustified. Without going into why this particular election has had this extreme impact, let’s instead examine the ultimate outcome of dipping into this election’s harsh rhetoric.

To take a totally self-centered point of view, science tells us that friends play a significant role in promoting our overall health. Overwhelming research demonstrates that adults with strong social support have a reduced risk of many significant health problems, including depression, high blood pressure and even an unhealthy body mass index. According to the Mayo Clinic, numerous studies have even found a connection with friendships and longevity; older adults with a robust social life are likely to live longer than their peers with fewer connections. Let’s not forget that friends help you celebrate the good times and lend support during the not-so-good times.

Bottom line: Is an election more important than all of that?

OK, some of you might say, “yes, it is that important.” If that’s the case, what can you do to put some sanity into your daily interactions when it seems that almost every conversation SEE PAGE 18

Here are Koenig’s two crucial questions to ask yourself before you even think about opening your mouth on subjects political: 1. Why am I raising this subject or allowing myself to be lured into discussion about it — e.g., to educate or give someone information because they’re open to it, because I love a rousing debate, because my friend/ spouse/colleague and I always talk about politics and then agree to disagree?

2. How will discussion affect my relationship, e.g., we’ll grow closer from sharing divergent opinions, it won’t have any impact, or whenever we get entangled in a political discussion, our relationship suffers?

It’s important to look to your experience and expectations.

sparring about who’s voting for whom and it means nothing to either of you, that’s one thing,” she said. “If, however, whenever you and your partner or spouse try to share political differences, you end up fuming at each other or retreating into chilly silence, don’t go there. If your boss or a higher-up tries to ensnare you into a political discussion, unless you’re sure that it will never be used against you, don’t go there either. Be especially careful about what you say on social media and when you’ve been drinking.”

Back at the ranch: We lived through our week of potential polarizing political upheaval quite well, I’m happy to report. It got off to a good start with my husband and his adult lifelong friend finding all of the things they could agree upon the night before the debate. The tension did rise appreciably during the debate — our friends huddled together on the couch and one frantically tried to fact check on her phone while I relieved my anxiety by taking each dog for several walks. (Thank goodness we have three!)

In the end, things turned out well. They decided to move to Sarasota, so they may see a future in our relationship postelection.

Lesson learned? Don’t forget that friends are more precious than politics.

SHS students, faculty get tacky for spirit week

T

he pairing of socks and sandals could be seen down every hallway at Sarasota High School for Tacky Tourist Day. Throughout the spirit week students dressed in pink for breast cancer awareness, wore the attire of their favorite sports teams and showed their patriotic pride for America Day leading up to the homecoming football game Oct. 14.

Faculty members also participated in the dress-up days. Assistant Principal Merlin Schenk had no problem dressing up for the day with a child’s binoculars, socks and Crocs sandals.
