Escapism? Yes, please

In a year fraught with events often suited to the plot of a thriller novel than real life, Sarasota residents basked in escapist fiction when borrowing books from their library branches in 2020. Romance novelist Danielle Steel occupied two of the 10 most checked-out titles for 2020, according to a list from the Sarasota County Library System. “The Wedding Dress” and “The Numbers Game” were the only books on the list by the same author. Not a single nonfiction title showed up in the top 10, though James Grippando’s “The Big Lie” and James Patterson’s “Revenge” did.

tangible proof that something has changed. Vaccines that we hoped for throughout 2020 to fight COVID-19 are arriving, with the hope of a return to normal life not far away. Not-so-new faces in new positions in Sarasota’s City Hall portend a new outlook, tempered with the same level of service. And at the county and city levels, new looks at an old problem could begin building a track record on affordable housing.

The first baby of 2021

The new year brings new beginnings, and no one knows that better than new parents Jordan Sawmiller and Quay Mays. The Bradenton couple had their first child, Messiah Mays, early in the morning on New Year’s Day — the first child born at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in 2021. The healthy baby — born at 1:39 a.m. — weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces. “I’m so in love with him already,” Sawmiller said. “They say you don’t know how much you love a kid until you have your own, and that’s true.” SMH nurses gave the new family a New Year’s-themed gift basket to mark the occasion. Sarasota Memorial Hospital delivered 10 babies Dec. 31 and two babies Jan. 1.
