New Mote residents: Otterly adorable Mote Laboratory & Aquarium social media followers named two of the aquarium’s three new resident otters that will be part of the “Otters & Their Waters” exhibit that opens in February.

Mote placed a poll with a list of possible names of literary orphaned characters on its Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts in December because two otters were orphaned and raised by wildlife rehabilitators.

Voters chose the names Huck for the male and Pippi for the female. The third otter is a female named Jane for Jane Eyre and exhibit sponsor Jane Hyslop.

The otter residents arrived in December and are preparing for the public eye by doing target exercises and undergoing regular check-ups.

Plans for a roundabout at U.S. 41 and Fruitville Road are still years from becoming a reality, but the city may take action soon to ensure the project can move ahead.

In a 3-2 vote, the City Commission directed staff Monday to negotiate a potential land swap with Palsar Developments Inc., the owner of a 1.5-acre site at the northeast corner of U.S. 41 and Fruitville.

If the commission eventually approves the land swap, the city could obtain land along Fruitville and U.S. 41 that is incorporated in the Florida Department of Transportation’s conceptual designs for the roundabout.

In return, the developer would get a portion of adjacent city-owned land at the corner of Fruitville and U.S. 41 not used for the construction of the roundabout.

David Chessler sees the redevelopment of Main Plaza as more than just an opportunity to capitalize on an underused site — it’s a chance to shape the future of the city he’s made his home.

Chessler teamed with two other Sarasota entrepreneurs, Eric Baird and Jesse Biter, to purchase the 8.6-acre downtown mall for $18.1 million in November. The three friends learned of the opportunity through Biter, eventually closing on a deal for less than half of its 2005 sale price of $40 million.

It’s a different type of endeavor than what Chessler usually oversees as chief investment officer for the Great White Shark Opportunity Fund, a partnership with PGA golfer Greg Norman focused on smaller businesses.

Still, he believed each member of the trio could play a valuable role in revitalizing an aging office and retail hub. Together, they would make sure Main Plaza was redeveloped right.

“We all have kids that are growing up here in Sarasota, and

we want to make sure the development we have is something our kids and downtown can be proud of,” Chessler said. “That’s a big piece of why we want the property — we want this to benefit the community.”

There’s been no shortage of public input on what should happen to the property since the sale was announced, Chessler said. The ownership group has encouraged that input, soliciting suggestions online and publicly inviting architects to submit plans for the first phase of redevelopment.

The initial work will focus on refurbishing the plaza’s existing retail footprint. Chessler wants the mall to present a more distinguishing face to visitors — right now, he said, you can walk down the 1900 block of Main Street without realizing what’s actually inside the commercial complex.

The ownership group will meet with architects next week to consider the finer details of a redesign. Already, Chessler has heard some recurring notes.

People want to keep a movie theater, although Chessler said current lessee Regal Cinemas has expressed an interest in reducing its current 20-theater footprint to concentrate on a more upscale product. People want local stores and restaurants. They want a unique, open space in which they can hang out.

improvements, then, the theater rehabilitation. The third phase is more ambitious and fluid, because the owners are considering constructing a new, large building on the north end of the site.

That could be a hotel, multifamily housing project, conference center — or something else.

Chessler said the group won’t be rushing to market on that phase of the project as it continues to gauge the right fit for the location and the city.

“There’s no need to pop up another hotel just because we want to pop up another hotel,” Chessler said. “We want to build a first rate establishment, and

oversee the creation of a new zoning code. The form-based code is designed to create more predictability in development for residents and builders alike.

It prioritizes the physical design of a building over the planned use in evaluating projects, and it seeks to create more walkable and harmonious streets.

During the past two years, Murphy has met with representatives for neighborhoods throughout the city in an attempt to tailor the new code to address specific problems. Now, she’s working to synthesize the information she’s gathered — as well as a slew of older feedback and staff input — to produce a user-friendly code to guide the future growth of the city.

Murphy also wants to encourage the use of multiple forms of transportation. Creating a more diverse mix of uses near residential areas can create more walkable neighborhoods, and allowing higher density projects in appropriate locations can attract more users to public transit.

“We’re not in this to generate an instant cashflow,” he said.

“We look at the project over the long term, take our time and make sure we have a wellthought-out plan.”

“Sometimes, I have to say, ‘I am listening to you, but I don’t have to agree with you,’” Murphy said. “I’m not the decision maker — I’m going to pull all this together, share your thoughts, share what my professional training has shown me, what my work in other cities has shown me.”

Murphy’s contract ends in October, creating a deadline for the completion of the code. The

studio is working on the document in phases, reviewing its work with staff before releasing sections to the public and other officials for further review.

Murphy hopes the new code will address enduring problems facing the community in which she was raised. Even as the studio focuses intently on finishing the form-based code, Murphy invites curious residents to speak up now to ensure optimal results.

“My advice to them is to come to the studio,” Murphy said. “We need those feedback loops so we can say, ‘Did we get this right?’”

In November 2015, Ann Frescura was chosen out of a dozen applicants following a six-month search as the new Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce executive director.

She comes to an island that’s experiencing record tourism and has earned numerous accolades, including a TripAdvisor No. 1 rating for Siesta Public Beach.

Frescura started her new role at the beginning of January, after nine years at Downtown Springfield Inc., in Springfield, Ill. The role of DSI, she said, is to be a “mini-chamber of commerce” for the downtown area.

Among the challenges Frescura can expect: balancing the strong commercial presence on Siesta Key with the needs of residents, while maintaining — or possibly expanding — the chamber’s role as an events team.

Frescura said event expansion and community outreach were part of her job at DSI. Springfield’s downtown area, she said, is a small, like Siesta Key, and residents, businesses and large events all share that space.

Frescura said she’s likely to explore opportunities with arts communities and farmers markets. She will also seek to add a family-friendly component to chamber events and activities, such as a children’s art festival.

“If there’s a program where children can learn and play and explore, that’s rewarding,” she said.

City homelessness director Doug Logan believes Sarasota can make significant strides toward addressing a longstanding issue in 2016 — as long as politics don’t get in the way.

More than half a year after his controversial hiring, Doug Logan is feeling comfortable in his role overseeing the city’s effort to combat chronic homelessness.

Now, he’s just got to set a plan in motion for dealing with the long-standing regional issue that has divided city and county governments over the past two years.

The city hired Logan in June as its special initiatives director for chronic homeless. His resume included experience as the commissioner of Major League Soccer, but nothing dealing with housing or homelessness. As he weathered calls to defund his position, Logan went through an intensive course on a complex issue.

Today, he knows there’s still more to learn, but he’s confident in his ability to help the city address homelessness. His outsider status has enabled him to continually ask questions while searching for best practices.

cally homeless individuals. He said government is ill-suited for addressing homelessness on its own. He believes a targeted nonprofit organization, using public and private funding, could work swiftly to provide housing.

“I see a very large light at the end of the tunnel,” Logan said.

Much of the conversation in Sarasota has focused on a debate over a come-as-you-are jail diversion facility — a model the county favors and the city has fought.

Logan is keenly aware of the political polarization surrounding homelessness in Sarasota.

Although he compared the shelter philosophy to “buying into pager technology in a smartphone era,” he said there is a larger dialogue that must not be bogged down by one issue.

“Where the shelter — to me, at least — is only the beginning of a conversation, it has become the conversation to many,” Logan said.

Assuming the position at the end of his career, Logan believes he carries a perspective that keeps him from getting too high or too low as work progresses or stalls.

He’s focusing on steadily advancing solutions that come with a proven track record. Combined with the community’s eagerness to address homelessness, he believes Sarasota can take significant steps forward in a short time on the issue.

“I am more enthusiastic about doing what I’m doing today than I was seven months ago,” Logan said. “And I’m really looking forward to the future, because I think we can make great inroads.”

Outlook for 2016: “We’re going to take, hopefully, 60 to 70 people who are homeless and put them in a home. That will make a meaningful difference — not only to the ones that are served, but it is going to give hope to the ones that are about to be served, and it is going to send a meaningful, positive signal to the people who are affected by this. By the end of 2016, we’re going to start to see a difference.”

“The worst thing you can do is the presumption, based on limited data, that you know things,” Logan said.

He quickly drilled down to discover what have become bedrock beliefs. First, that the best answer for addressing the issue is offering permanent supportive housing via a “housing first” philosophy. City officials have united behind this model, which seeks to stabilize homeless individuals by putting them in homes as quickly as possible.

His second discovery was that the city is lacking pieces of infrastructure that have enabled that type of programming in other places.

“I came to an awareness of how far behind we are,” Logan said.

“We’re really far behind other communities of this size and this wealth of dealing with this issue.”

He said Sarasota has missed a fertile window for creating a successful housing program. The federal and state governments began embracing housing first at the end of the last decade, and the lull in the real estate market created a good environment for developing a robust housing stock.

As that market recovers — and major government funding dries up — the city faces a tougher challenge beginning its effort in 2016.

Still, Logan isn’t pessimistic about the city’s ability to address homelessness considering the significant public interest in taking action.

“I cannot tell you on a daily basis how many people are vitally interested in, a) resolving the problem, and b) saying ‘What can I do?’” Logan said.

Michael Crosby, CEO and president of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, is excited to be nearing the completion of the largest fundraising campaign in the history of the organization.

That wasn’t necessarily a high bar to clear, because it was also Mote’s first comprehensive fundraising effort. Still, the research institution set an aggressive $50 million goal when it announced its Oceans of Opportunity campaign in early 2015. Already, it has raised more than $40 million, including eight gifts of $1 million or more.

For Crosby, the new year offers an opportunity to put that pot of money into action. Mote has adopted a series of goals for growth it hopes to achieve by 2020, and the Oceans of Opportunity campaign will help bring those goals to fruition.

“Twenty-sixteen is going to be a time when we’re going to renew and even strengthen our focus on the next generation,” Crosby said. “That’s really what the campaign is about — it’s about the future.”

Mote seeks to expand all arms of its operation, which includes five campuses across Florida.

In December, the organization received a $2 million donation

toward a new facility in the Florida Keys that will focus on coral reef research and restoration.

Crosby is focused on making Mote’s research facilities a center for innovation in marine science, and hopes to capitalize on academic efforts to create practical products as well.

He highlights the 2015 Gulf Coast Innovation Challenge as representative of the type of work in which Mote can specialize. There, Mote scientists contributed to projects focused on sustainable fish farming, water filtration and advances in medicine.

“The support that comes in is absolutely vital if Mote is going to continue as an independent organization, so that we have the freedom to conduct extremely innovative and potentially transformative science,” Crosby said.

On a local level, that means hiring 10 additional Ph.D. scientists to work in its City Island facility. Mote hopes to nearly double its economic impact of $86.8 million in Florida, $70 million of which is concentrated in Sarasota County.

“A strong Mote means a strong community here in Southwest Florida,” Crosby said. “We’re a very significant component of the overall economic engine already.”

the City Island facility necessitates moving the aquarium to a new location, Crosby said. In 2013, Mote attempted to secure bayfront land near the Van Wezel for a new aquarium but was rebuffed by the city. At the time, Crosby said the organization would move swiftly to find a new location for the aquarium.

More than a year later, there’s still no update on where that new aquarium might be located. Mote has determined the Sarasota mainland is best for attracting visitors to the informal science education center. As the city works on developing a master plan for the bayfront land Mote sought, Crosby is no longer ruling out a bayfront aquarium as a possibility, although alternatives exist.

“There are also other options that we must look at, keeping in mind the goal is not for Mote to build its new science education and aquarium campus on a particular location,” Crosby said.

“It’s to select the one that will help us best achieve our goals and will best serve our community.”

Although speculation about an aquarium site often generates the most attention from the public, Crosby said each element of the organization’s 2020 vision carries its own significance.

“When you have a strategic plan, you have to stay focused and be very methodical,” Crosby said. “We can’t get sidetracked and go off on tangents. It’s like building a new house — you have to build it brick by brick by brick, lay a good, strong foundation.”

Guns make you safer Few people would agree with that idea, or with two bills that would allow guns to be carried in the open. But there’s a legitimate case for how open carry can improve safety.

W

hen President Obama wept Tuesday over the victims of the Newtown massacre, you might say the tears on his cheeks actually stoked the fires of what’s likely to be an intense gun battle in the Legislature starting next week.

Before year-end, two proposed gun bills — crafted to loosen Florida’s concealed weapons laws — made it through House and Senate committee hearings and are on paths that could have them end up on the House and Senate floors and possibly passed.

The House bills: n HB 4001, sponsored by our own Republican Rep. Greg Steube of Manatee County.

Steube’s bill likely will be the more controversial because it proposes to allow licensed gun owners to carry handguns openly on college campuses. (Senate companion: SB 68.) n HB 163, primarily sponsored by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fort Walton Beach. This bill will be volatile, too, because it proposes to allow Floridians who are licensed to carry concealed weapons to carry them in the open. (The Senate companion bill: SB 300.)

You can already hear the protests and references to Newtown, Colorado, Oregon and San Bernardino. And they would be understandable. Among non-gun owners, there’s an intuitive rejection of the idea of people carrying handguns in the open.

You can understand protesting the idea of someone’s freshman daughter sitting in a Florida State University classroom next to a student wearing a holster with a loaded gun.

Or you can understand how someone immediately would feel on edge, probably fearful, standing in line at a Wawa when, say, three burly, bearded young men — like characters out of a Hollywood Western — walk in the store, each with handguns belted to their hips.

Who wants either of those instances?

But there is another side to this coin. In many states where carrying a firearm in the open is legal, the carriers must be licensed.

They must have completed sanctioned guntraining courses and have complied with extensive background and personality checks.

Indeed, Florida has exhausting requirements for someone to qualify to carry a concealed weapon. Read Chapter 790 of the Florida Statutes; there are 2,000 words that cover everything — mental health background, drug or alcohol use, criminal offenses, domestic violence and on and on.

The fact is if you sat in a classroom next to a Floridian with a concealed weapon inside his sport jacket, you actually should be relieved and feel safe — knowing that if some crazed gunman burst through the classroom door, there would be a trained, competent, lawabiding gun owner there to protect you.

Consider, too, these facts, courtesy of Rep. Steube: “After 28 years of data in Florida, licensed conceal-permit holders are six times less likely to commit a crime than law enforcement officers. Specifically, permit holders only commit misdemeanors and felonies at a rate of .0002% annually.”

And we all have learned this from the mass shootings: The perpetrators specifically target places where they know guns will be absent.

Given the current climate — terrorists increasingly targeting us, everyone feeling less safe — Reps. Steube and Gaetz’s gun bills are not out of the norm as much as you might think. We would favor giving them a try.

A PRIMER ON GUN LAWS U.S. CONSTITUTION

SECOND AMENDMENT — A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

FLORIDA CONSTITUTION

SECTION 8. Right to bear arms.— (a) The right of the people to keep and bear arms in defense of themselves and of the lawful authority of the state shall not be infringed, except that the manner of bearing arms may be regulated by law. (b) There shall be a mandatory period of three days, excluding weekends and legal holidays, between the purchase and delivery at retail of any handgun. For

the purposes of this section, “purchase” means the transfer of money or other valuable consideration to the retailer, and “handgun” means a firearm capable of being carried and used by one hand, such as a pistol or revolver. Holders of a concealed weapon permit as prescribed in Florida law shall not be subject to the provisions of this paragraph. (c) The Legislature shall enact legislation implementing subsection (b) of this section, effective no later than Dec. 31, 1991, which shall provide that anyone violating the provisions of subsection (b) shall be guilty of a felony. (d) This restriction shall not apply to a trade in of another handgun.

FLORIDA’S CONCEALED WEAPONS LAWS 790.053 Open carrying of weapons.— (1) Except as otherwise provided by law and in subsection (2), it is unlawful for any person to openly carry on or about his or her person any firearm or electric weapon or device.

It is not a violation of this section for a person licensed to carry a concealed firearm as provided in s. 790.06(1), and who is lawfully carrying a firearm in a concealed manner, to briefly and openly display the firearm to the ordinary sight of another person, unless the firearm is intentionally displayed in an angry or threatening manner, not in necessary self-defense.

(2) A person may openly carry, for purposes of lawful self-defense: (a) A self-defense chemical spray. (b) A nonlethal stun gun or dartfiring stun gun or other nonlethal electric weapon or device that is designed solely for defensive purposes.

(3) Any person violating this section commits a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

Where you are prohibited from openly carrying a gun: (12)(a) A license issued under this section does not authorize any person to openly carry a handgun or carry a concealed weapon or firearm into: 1. Any place of nuisance as defined in s. 823.05; 2. Any police, sheriff, or highway patrol station; 3. Any detention facility, prison, or jail; 4. Any courthouse; 5. Any courtroom, except that

nothing in this section would preclude a judge from carrying a concealed weapon or determining who will carry a concealed weapon in his or her courtroom; 6. Any polling place; 7. Any meeting of the governing body of a county, public school district, municipality, or special district; 8. Any meeting of the Legislature or a committee thereof; 9. Any school, college, or professional athletic event not related to firearms; 10. Any elementary or secondary school facility or administration building; 11. Any career center; 12. Any portion of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, which portion of the establishment is primarily devoted to such purpose; 13. Any college or university facility unless the licensee is a registered student, employee, or faculty member of such college or university and the weapon is a stun gun or nonlethal electric weapon or device designed solely for defensive purposes and the weapon does not fire a dart or projectile; 14. The inside of the passenger terminal and sterile area of any airport, provided that no person shall be prohibited from carrying any legal firearm into the terminal, which firearm is encased for shipment for purposes of checking such firearm as baggage to be lawfully transported on any aircraft; or 15. Any place where the carrying of firearms is prohibited by federal law.

HOW OTHER STATES REGULATE GUNS n Forty-three states permit the open carrying of both long guns and handguns. Of these states, 26 do not require a license and do not restrict whether the firearm is loaded or unloaded. n Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Tennessee require a license to openly carry a handgun, but not a long gun, such as a rifle or shotgun. Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Texas and Utah require a license to openly carry any firearm. The remaining six

states permit open carry, but impose special limitations. North Dakota limits the hours during which an unlicensed person may openly carry an unloaded handgun. n Three states permit openly carrying specific types of firearms. South Carolina permits a long gun without a license, while prohibiting openly carrying a handgun. Hawaii permits openly carrying a handgun with a license and prohibits openly carrying a long gun in any circumstance. Oklahoma permits

openly carrying a handgun with a license and prohibits openly carrying a long gun in most circumstances. n In Texas, licensees must carry the handgun in a shoulder or belt holster.

In Oklahoma, licensees may carry an unconcealed handgun in a belt or shoulder holster or in a scabbard or case for firearms that is wholly or partially visible. n District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois and New York prohibit the open carry of both handguns and long guns.

HIGH FARE 10 p.m. — 4800 block of North Tamiami Trail Theft: A taxi driver reported two individuals for not paying their $40 fare. One of the passengers gave the man $10 and said they would return with the rest of the fare, but both individuals left without returning. An officer made contact with the individuals, at which point the passenger who paid $10 said the other passenger would pay the remaining fare. The other passenger only had $18, leaving an outstanding fare of $12. The driver said he did not want to press charges for the remaining total. One of the passengers informed the officer he had drug paraphernalia in his front pocket, handing over a glass pipe used to smoke marijuana. The officer issued the passenger a citation.

GETTING A HANDLE 10:01 a.m. — 900 block of University Parkway Suspicion: A manager at a hotel reported subjects were pulling on door handles in the back of the building. The subjects were all staying at the hotel and had room keys. The officer told the manager that if she saw any other individuals pulling on door handles, she should call law enforcement.

FLIPPING OUT 2:07 p.m. — 400 block of North Tamiami Trail Dispute: A woman said she accidentally cut another driver off while driving, and the other driver excessively honked her horn and drove around the woman. The woman made an obscene gesture toward the other driver, at which point the other driver slowed down and got behind the woman.

The woman said the other driver followed her car for about 20 minutes. The other driver saw the obscene gesture but said she was not following the woman. Neither party had committed a crime, and both drivers left the scene without further incident.

CLOSE TALKER 1:33 a.m. — 300 block of North Orange Avenue Suspicion: A man reported that he and his family were waiting for a cab at a gas station and felt uncomfortable because a woman was walking close to them and talking to herself. The woman left the scene when an officer arrived, and the officer waited with the family until the cab picked them up.

Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary describes wisdom: (wizdum) n. 1. the quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action; sagacity, discernment or insight. 2. scholarly knowledge or learning.

I read thoroughly Matt Walsh’s editorial on the word for 2016. It seems Mr. Walsh is very wise to have chosen a key word for this year, it being an election year.

However, I noted the last several years’ words chosen — “freedom,” “revelation” and “aspire” — also could fit into 2016, and in fact, should be coupled with the word for 2016, “wisdom.”

For years I have defined wisdom thus: the meeting of knowledge, experience and common sense at a singular point in time to solve or deal with an issue or problem, the most important of these three being common sense.

And that is what I believe is sadly lacking in our world of today — common sense. Knowledge is available in abundance largely through the Internet, a tool I find very useful for researching issues. Experience comes from doing repeatedly any job or task worth doing, of finding new and better ways to improve that job or task to make it more meaningful and valuable.

But this world is in very short supply of common sense, and this dearth is not limited to us common folk. No, it seems to be the great failing of our leaders, that they lack the common sense of the Founding Fathers (and

Mothers).

First, we need to reteach the true meaning of the word “freedom.” It does not mean I can do anything and everything I desire.

Freedom comes with the responsibility to choose the action I am taking in the name of freedom, that that action is beneficial to my well-being, that of my family and/or community and nation.

Second, we do need a “revelation” of what freedom is and how our voice and vision can promote and ensure freedom, freedom from unnecessary government/state interference in our lives, hopes and dreams, yet allowing us to reach our fullest potential.

Third, we do need to “aspire” to greatness. This is what built the greatest freedom engine in the history of mankind, the United States of America. Over 250 years later, thousands still aspire to come to our shores seeking their dreams, hopes and freedoms to become more than their forbears.

There will be “winners,” and there will be “losers” in the arena of life, but that should never stop anyone from “aspiring” for better, for greater, for freedom to hope, dream and achieve.

Yes, I agree with the choice of the word for 2016 — “wisdom.”

I hope others read Mr. Walsh’s editorial in the Observer and “aspire” to “freedom” with “wisdom” in 2016 … and beyond. From a scholastic point, Mr. Walsh’s editorials should be required reading in all our schools.

JENNIFER ROMINIECKI Marie Selby Botanical Gardens President and CEO Jennifer Rominiecki sees the opportunity to grow both the gardens and its revenue sources.

When she assumed the role of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens president and CEO in February 2015, Jennifer Rominiecki had just a few months to learn about the organization’s history as its 40th anniversary approached in August.

Now, Selby’s year-long celebration is approaching the midway point, and Rominiecki has been on the job for almost a year.

In that time, she has learned to stay focused on the future while honoring the past.

“Celebrating our 40th anniversary year has been a way to engage the people who were involved at the very beginning,” Rominiecki said. “At the same time, they know that we’re at a place where we have to build the revenue streams and make Selby sustainable for the future. It’s given me the platform to think about how we move ourselves forward.”

For funding, the organization relies on its base of more than 8,000 members, funds from private donors and grants. Rominiecki has a strategy to ease that pressure for private funding for

Selby, which draws 140,000 visitors annually, including approximately 37,000 for conferences, weddings and other events.

Rominiecki seeks to elevate the status of the gardens as an event venue even further.

“I really felt strongly that the catered event business here, as well as the public dining, were very big opportunities for Selby’s business development,” Romi-

niecki said.

Selby partnered in December with Michael’s On East, a culinary staple in Sarasota that’s a popular event venue on its own, to bring the restaurant’s caliber of food and service to the Selby House Café.

Selby averages two weddings per week annually, with the Great Room serving as the wedding and reception venue for many of them.

The Great Room will receive an overhaul as part of the partnership. Plans call for an expansion in the summer to allow for 400 guests and a 2,400-square-foot addition to the outdoor seating area. There are also plans for an awning over the outdoor area for added entertaining space.

“It’s capitalizing on the unbelievable, unparallel location we have here,” Rominiecki said. “To be downtown and on the bayfront is so special, so I think that we are taking that asset and improving it to benefit our core mission.”

But as Selby celebrates its 40th anniversary, it faces the challenge of aging infrastructure.

During her first week in February 2015, the aging mangrove walkway collapsed into the bay.

“What’s so wonderful is that the community came together, and we raised the funds we needed and were able to complete that project pretty quickly,” Rominiecki said.

JIM BRIDGES Jebco Ventures CEO Jim Bridges has a full docket of ongoing projects throughout Sarasota, and he's embracing every challenge.

From hotels to housing to commercial projects, development firm Jebco Ventures has a heavy workload for 2016 — which is just how Jim Bridges likes it.

Bridges, as CEO of Jebco, is the hands-on head of a small company with a demanding portfolio of developments. For more than four decades, Bridges has embraced his workaholic tendencies, pouring his energy into his career.

“I look forward to Mondays where most people look forward to Fridays,” Bridges said. “When my wife married me, she would ride around with me on Saturdays and Sundays looking at real estate.”

Bridges moved to Sarasota 12 years ago to consider retiring; he and his wife made an offer to purchase a unit at the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota. They didn’t get that spot, but Bridges did discover a nearby condo project on Golden Gate Point trying to get built.

That property, the Phoenix, soon became his first venture into the Sarasota development market.

Today, Bridges seems to be as far from retirement as possible.

Ringling Boulevard, two hotels in downtown Sarasota and a mixeduse condominium and commercial project on the North Trail.

Jebco is also handling several smaller commercial efforts, and the company is responsible for more than $250 million in new projects right now. Bridges says Jebco sees even more possibilities — this is only the amount of work that he wants to take on.

“Every new project I see that I consider an opportunity that I think would be fun, then I keep an open mind,” Bridges said. “If it’s not fun, I don’t do it anymore.”

Bridges has earned praise for his ability to work well with others. When the Tahiti Park Neighborhood Association sought to address a traffic issue with a proposed Starbucks on the North Trail, members went to Bridges for help. He owns the neighboring property at 202 N. Tamiami Trail where his Embassy Suites hotel project is underway, and they were wondering if he might reroute his site’s internal traffic to let Starbucks customers use it, too.

Jebco agreed to draw up a preliminary site plan that would do just that. Starbucks eventually withdrew its plans, but the gesture left a lasting impression.

“He gets nothing out of it except for just being a nice guy,” association President Jennifer AhearnKoch said. “I’ve been around a while, and I don’t know too many people who would do that.”

can get in the way of maximizing immediate profits.

“It’s not always about the money; it’s trying to do the right thing,” Bridges said. “Some people aren’t going to agree with you, but we try to make sure most people — especially people we’re affecting — have an opportunity for input.”

He’s developed an eye for the right investment at the right time.

The Embassy Suites is Jebco’s first hotel project, and it took two years for the development to get out of the ground. It’s ahead of a potential downtown hotel building boom, and last month became the third of eight proposed hotels to break ground.

Already, Bridges is preparing another hotel on Fruitville Road.

With all of his developments, he’s looking to find a niche: townhomes were a scarce product, the North Trail was an unexplored market, the hotels will have distinct price points. With a surge of new hotel and residential projects poised to flood the market, though, he’s concerned about the overall impact on the downtown landscape.

Entering 2016, Bridges is prepared to exercise more caution when selecting projects to move ahead with — but don’t expect him to slow down too much.

“It’s just an instinct — I feel like I was born with it, but it’s something you tend to get better at as you get older and you get more experience,” Bridges said. “It’s my passion.”

Outlook for 2016: “While I’m not going to back off anything I can believe in, I’m going to approach projects with a little bit of a different attitude — a wait-andsee-whathappens approach. RICK PICCOLO What does SarasotaBradenton International Airport CEO Rick Piccolo see for growth in 2016 and beyond? The sky’s the limit.

Rick Piccolo started as a janitor at what is now the Buffalo Niagara International Airport 45 years ago. Since then, his career has soared. He was hired as CEO of Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport in 1995.

Its terminal was 6 years old, and the airport owed $115 million of the $150 million in debt incurred during renovations.

In August 2014, SRQ made its last payment on that debt, becoming one of just a handful of debt-free airports in the country.

And that could allow the airport to reach new heights, as well.

Approximately four years ago, just before SRQ paid off its debt, it began focusing on renewed infrastructure, planning for $30 million in ongoing capital projects – including a new air traffic control tower, improvements and renovations to the airport entrances designed to increase traffic flow, and even LED lighting to cut power usage by approximately 40%. Piccolo says these will allow the airport to continue providing a boutique experience to its customers.

annual operating budget of approximately $20 million, now has $26 million in reserves. SRQ’s traffic is up approximately 2% in 2015 through November, the last month for which figures were available, and Piccolo believes growth will continue.

“I predict the airport’s passenger traffic will grow 3% to 5% in 2016, and that it will add another airline, or at least one more destination,” Piccolo said.

In the short term, he said, the airport’s capital projects provide construction jobs. More activity also means more flights and more tourism.

“I think it really goes both ways,” Piccolo said. “The airport is really a reflection of economic activity in the community.”

He said the airport is poised to expand, both on and off the runway.

of the airport’s loss of AirTran, which made up 28% of the airport’s traffic, following its merger with Southwest in 2012. The next year, additional passenger traffic from United and Delta helped offset the loss, although 2013 traffic was still down.

As of November 2015, SRQ had already seen 1.21 million passengers in the calendar year — up from 1.13 million in 2013.

Piccolo said the airport will also continue to add property so it can develop revenue that doesn’t depend on passenger traffic. In fact, he said, that is the reason SRQ was able to survive the loss of AirTran.

In 1995, the year Piccolo was hired, the airport collected approximately $200,000 in revenue unrelated to its airport operations. It now collects $1.5 million annually.

Piccolo envisions partnering with a business that needs immediate access to air transport, such as a shipping facility, to occupy part of the airfield.

Piccolo said the airport will also focus on attracting international carriers with some improvements, such as an expanded customs facility.

“It’s more difficult to attract an international carrier than a domestic carrier,” Piccolo said.

“When you look at the amount of European tourists in Florida – there’s a lot of demand. How do we tap into that?”

Overall, he said, the airport is positioned well financially and strategically.

“We’re going to continue to grow,” he said. “When you look at all the building blocks of the business, things are all pointed in the right direction.”

avid Wyant’s voice booms across Nathan Benderson Park, but you’ll be hardpressed to find the man behind the walkie-talkie.

Riding in a golf cart along the water’s edge, the Sarasota resident is as close to the action as one can get, without actually climbing into a racing shell.

And at the same time, Wyant is nowhere near the hundreds of spectators lined up along the race course, making it the perfect vantage point to recount the day’s events.

Wyant makes his way to the starting line and takes a quick glance down at his cheat sheet — a single sheet of paper fluttering in the wind.

Wyant then grabs his walkietalkie, introduces each of the competing crews and explains what’s about to happen in the race. Then, it’s showtime.

As the rowers race the course, Wyant is tasked with providing a running commentary of the competition before eventually turning the race over to the finish line announcer at the midway point.

He quickly makes his way back up to the starting line and repeats the process all over again.

“I get to be as close as anyone can be, and I’m constantly moving,” Wyant says. “I get a huge kick out of being able to go along with the race as I call it.”

“I get an adrenaline rush,” Wyant says. “I get so into it mentally that sometimes it’s kind of like, ‘Man, I wish I was in that race.’ I don’t get to see who wins though, which is sometimes difficult to handle.”

A native of Sarasota, Wyant was first approached about announcing regattas by his boss, Michael Taaffe, whose children happened to row for the Crew at the time.

Taaffe knew of Wyant’s rowing background and felt Wyant, a business litigation attorney, would be perfect for the job.

That was five years ago.

Since then, Wyant, who also serves as the Crew’s coxswain coach, has announced everything from quad regattas to state championships to this past summer’s youth national championships.

“They couldn’t pay me to do this,” Wyant says. “I enjoy it so much. I’m a huge sports fan, so I think that’s why I enjoy announcing so much.”

Wyant began rowing for the Sarasota Crew during his sophomore year at Pine View after his grandmother told him it would be in his best interest to get involved in at least one extracurricular activity. He eventually settled on rowing after reading about the

sport in a magazine.

Wyant wanted to row in an eight, but after only tipping the scale at 105 pounds, he realized that wasn’t an option. He was destined to be a coxswain.

As a coxswain, Wyant had three main functions: steering the boat, calling out the race plan and letting the rowers know what was happening around them. His ability to multitask on the water not only helped Wyant excel at the position but also made announcing even easier.

“It’s pretty natural to me,” Wyant says. “I have enough knowledge of rowing that I kind of get in a groove.”

Wyant will announce between six and eight regattas this spring — all of which will feature at least one of his coxswains. So how does he remain impartial?

“I want to keep doing it,” Wyant says with a laugh.

Joking aside, Wyant has learned to separate the two aspects. When he’s behind the walkie-talkie, Wyant is focused solely on letting everyone know what’s happening in the race — even if his heart might be telling him otherwise.

“Inside, I’m always thinking about the kids,” Wyant says.

“Sometimes I want to scream at them, but usually inside, I’m smiling. I’ve gotten past it being a reflex to cheer for them, but at first, it was a little bit weird.”

Riverview returned to the win column Jan. 5, defeating Sarasota Military Academy. Jordan Evens led the way with four goals and two assists. Natalie Oliver had a goal and two assists. Lauren Boblitt and Gia Genta each added a goal. Natalie Holinger and Amy Dunn both were credited with an assist.

Sharks ranked No. 11 in excellence program The Sarasota YMCA Sharks swim team was recently ranked No. 11 in USA Swimming’s Club Excellence Program.

The voluntary program is designed to identify and reward up to 200 USA Swimming clubs that have attained a high level of athlete performance.

During the 2014-15 season, the Sharks won their 15th YMCA National Short Course Championship, 24th Florida Junior Olympic Championships and 20th YMCA

State Championship. In addition, 15 swimmers competed in junior and senior USA Nationals, and two swimmers, Austin Katz and Keenan Dols, competed in the World Junior Championships in Singapore. Coach Brent Arckey also was selected as a coach for Team USA, and 10 swimmers qualified for the 2016 Olympic Trials.

Cal Ripken Sarasota announces registration date Cal Ripken Sarasota will hold onsite registration for the upcoming spring season from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 16, at the Cal Ripken ballfields located at the intersection of Tuttle Avenue and 12th Street.

The league is open to all players ages 4 to 12. Registration fees, which include a team shirt, pants and hat, are $180 for T-ball, $220 for Rookie and $240 for Minors and Majors.

Discounts are available for families with more than one child participating. The league also offers scholarships for those in need to help cover registration costs.

Whether she was conducting the choir at Temple Beth Israel, volunteering at Jewish Family & Children’s Service, meeting with friends or running errands, Florence Weisblat Katz was never seen without heels or a smile.

“She loved dressing up,” Judy Vigder, Katz’s daughter, said. “As a little girl, she only had one pair of shoes for a short period of time, some boots. When she became an adult and could wear heels, she went crazy.”

Katz, 100, of Sarasota, died Dec. 26.

She wore size 6 1/2 narrow shoes and stood just 4 feet, 8 inches tall.

But the size of the crowd — nearly 300 — at her service Dec. 30, at Temple Beth Israel, showed the big shoes she left behind to fill.

“Our sanctuary was completely filled,” said Temple Beth Israel Rabbi Jonathan Katz (no relation).

“She is so woven into the fabric of our congregation’s life and history and always will be.”

Katz, a member of Temple Beth Israel since its establishment in 1979, was the temple’s first choir director, a position she held for 23 years.

Born July 9, 1915, in the small town of Coshocton, Ohio, Katz graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music from Oberlin

College in 1937 and a master’s degree in music from Ohio State University in 1939.

Up until her last several months, she volunteered twice a week for the Senior Outreach Services (SOS) program at the Jewish Family & Children’s Services in Sarasota, which gives homebound senior citizens the chance to socialize with others on a weekly basis.

“She just genuinely cared about what she was doing and had such a respect for helping others,” Director of Senior Services Pam Baron said. “She found a purpose and truly mattered.”

In 2013, Katz was named Florida’s winner of the Salute to Senior Service, an award Home Instead Inc. annually gives to seniors who have had a positive impact on their community.

“She always told me that giving is better than receiving, and she told everyone who would thank her for her service, ‘Oh no, you’re serving me,’” Vigder said. “She felt that every day, she should help somebody, and helping others helped her.”

Katz was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, and son, Nathan. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Robert Vigder; daughter-inlaw, Denise Katz; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

PARISH CENTER OPENS

FREE LECTURE

For 40 years, the Parish Center at St. Michael’s Archangel Catholic Church on Siesta Key has been the site of events for members of the community.

On Dec. 22, 1974, the center was dedicated by the Rev. Charles McLaughlin, bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg.

The ceremony took place following high Mass at noon and included a colorful procession from the sanctuary to the entrance of the Parish Center.

Common Foot/Ankle Conditions and Treatment

The opening of the Parish Center not only marked the completion of the building but also highlighted the fact that St. Michael’s was beginning its 14th year with plans to build and grow its congregation.

The Parish Center is still in use today at St. Michael’s and serves as a meeting place for members of the community. Many events — including pancake breakfasts, meetings for the Knights of Columbus, dinners and other social gatherings — are hosted there each year.
