First baby of the new year Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s first baby of 2022 arrived at 1:36 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Parents Lauren and Patrick received a special basket of baby gifts for Beau, their second child. “I am feeling in shock. I was not expecting to be the first baby of the year at all, but we are over the moon, and we are all doing well,” Lauren said. SMH-Sarasota’s obstetric team helped deliver a total of 18 babies on Dec. 31, 2021. The last baby of the year was born at 11:27 p.m. at SMH-Sarasota, capping off the largest year ever for Sarasota Memorial deliveries. In 2021, SMH-Sarasota delivered a total of 4,275 babies, including 69 sets of twins and one set of triplets. The previous record for deliveries was nearly 4,120 babies born at SMH in 2019.

Bikes on Main Street

Main way to ring in new year

The DreamLarge organization had a busy day and night on Dec. 16 when it hosted a merry bike ride through downtown Sarasota that carried over into a nighttime market celebration. The group’s BLVD Bike Rides series had a “Merry on Main” theme for the holidays. A number of bicyclists — many wearing Santa hats and decorating their bikes in colorful Christmas lights— rode through the area led by Jeff Vrendenburg. The bike ride made its way back to the Rosemary District, where guests stopped to enjoy the RADD Night Market, a toy drive benefiting the Mothers Helping Mothers nonprofit and an e-bike raffle in partnership with Endless Summer EcoTours.
