early a year after the city backed out of plans to sell the land for development, a park at Beneva and Fruitville roads remains relatively unchanged.

For the residents who pushed hardest to preserve Fruitville Road Park, it’s a bittersweet sight.

They’re glad the 3.5-acre park isn’t being turned into a shopping center, but they also want it to be more than it is today.

The city has no formal plans to revise its special event policy, but staff is undertaking a thorough review of this year’s Thunder by the Bay.

A

s the organizers of Thunder by the Bay work to rally support for the survival of the motorcycle festival in its current location, a survey of downtown merchants paints a dreary picture of the event’s impact on business.

This year, the city of Sarasota is conducting a thorough examination of how Thunder by the Bay went, after the event drew criticism from some businesses and officials. Downtown Economic Development Coordinator Norm Gollub conducted a survey of 104 stores and restaurants impacted by street closures during the weekend, and the response was largely negative.

“For 89 businesses, it was not good,” Gollub said. “For many, it was a disaster.”

Merchants detailed issues with street closures, competing vendors, the festival’s clientele and the overall number of special events during tourist season. Gollub said the timing was a particularly crucial factor for why some merchants expressed displeasure with Thunder by the Bay. “The shopkeepers have only so

many weeks in season to make 70 or more percent of their yearly income,” Gollub said. “Every time there’s a significant closure — whether it’s for a special event or a construction project — it impacts businesses.”

Lucy Nicandri, the event organizer and executive director of Suncoast Charities for Children, pointed to the positive aspects of a third-party economic impact study regarding Thunder by the Bay. As city staff weighs potentially revising its special event policies, she’s attempting to rally support to demonstrate there’s a significant interest in keeping the event alive downtown.

In making an appeal to city officials, Nicandri wants to stress the broader impact of the event. The 2016 study said the event, with about 90,000 attendees, had an estimated economic impact of nearly $9 million in Sarasota County.

Beyond the downtown core, she believes other businesses see a benefit from Thunder by the Bay. And even if businesses take a short-term hit, she thinks there’s a long-term value — that the event brings people back to downtown Sarasota who wouldn’t otherwise visit.

“These are people that are spending millions of dollars to come into the area, book hotels for the week and come back after the event is over,” Nicandri said.

“I think we need to look at the residual value — and look at the impact for the overall county area.”

Gollub said it’s in the city’s hands to determine the future of Thunder by the Bay in its downtown. However, when it comes to the specific question of how the event impacts business in the heart of the city, he believes the survey has shown a strong answer.

“Thunder by the Bay certainly has benefits,” Gollub said. “But in terms of the downtown district, it financially is not good.”

Justyna Clipper hopes to build a three-home subdivision on a 2-acre Siesta Key property she’s owned since 1988. She could build two now, but her architect and consultant hope to convince neighbors that they’ll benefit from the increased density.

Ron Sivitz, lead design professional for the project, listed those benefits at a Jan. 26 neighborhood workshop: If rezoning for the subdivision is approved, developers would be required to implement a management plan for wetlands that occupy approximately onethird of the property, a stormwater management plan and additional landscape buffers. Those conditions would not be required for two single-family homes.

Still, many at the workshop were apprehensive about the potential increased traffic, removal of vegetation and compatibility with the surrounding community.

Shelly Malis, a nearby resident, said she generally opposes “anything that takes away from the wild, jungle-y feel of this end of the island.”

Still, she said she isn’t sure if there’s a major difference between two homes versus three homes on the property, depending on how the homes are used.

rezoning would set a precedent for increased density on the island.

“I feel like we’ve reached a tipping point for development on this barrier island,” she said.

“This just isn’t compatible with the surrounding area.”

Adjacent properties to the north and across Midnight Pass, including Clippers’, are zoned for one home per acre. Clipper seeks to rezone the property to 2.5 homes per acre, as is allowed for parcels to the south along Port Lane, though she would only build 1.5 per acre.

If the rezone isn’t approved to allow the subdivision, Clipper said she will build two homes.

Sivitz said the concept plan has been submitted to Sarasota County planning staff for review before it goes before the Sarasota County Planning Commission.

And once you’re there, there’s not much to do beyond walking along the Circus Trail at the northeast corner of Beneva and Fruitville roads.

A group of five residents, hailing from four nearby residential complexes, has been working with city staff to enact changes for more than a year. Together,

they’ve developed a list of potential short-term improvements: erecting signage, installing seating, adding native plants.

As they worked on locating funding, they had a radical idea: What if this determined group wasn’t being ambitious enough?

At a November meeting of the city’s Parks, Recreation and Environmental Protection Board, new board member John Tuccillo posed that question. The park was part of an 11-acre parcel the

City officials will discuss funding options for improving the park during the next budget cycle, according to Public Works General Manager Todd Kucharski. Beyond the short-term improvements, he suggested the city could consider bringing in a consultant to undertake a master planning effort for the park.

Over time, a combination of

grant, private and city funds could help pay for improvements pieceby-piece. It would be a long-term effort including other interests: Right now, the Sarasota County Fire Department leases a property on the city-owned land, and a canal cutting through the park could be part of a county stormwater improvement project.

“We’d want to get all the stakeholders involved, partnering with the existing groups on that site to see how we can work together, and then phase accordingly,” Kucharski said.

Already, residents are envisioning it as a potential opportunity for broader improvements. With the park serving as an anchor for the community, Dumaine imagined a chain effect in the surrounding areas.

“We’ve got a Town and Country shopping center on the northwest side of that intersection,” Dumaine said. “It needs redevelopment. If you had a really nice park, maybe even with a community center — wouldn’t that be a great spur for maybe a mixed-use development across the street?”

With progress largely theoretical to date, residents are determined to make tangible upgrades in 2016. It might start with a name change, but they’re not likely to be content with just that.

For Kucharski and other city staff, the challenge of improving Fruitville Road Park is less of a burden thanks to the level of investment they’re seeing from citizens.

“It’s really awesome to have community members interactive in their park, because there’s a sense of ownership then and a sense of pride,” Kucharski said.

“The park starts to grow together with the community.”

After receiving $2.1 million in a settlement following the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the city dedicated $450,000 toward park improvements in December.

Suddenly, an opening for a bigger plan began to present itself.

Roberto Bilancini has only been in Sarasota for a year-and-a-half, but the owner of the Hillview Grill says the Southside Village neighborhood isn’t what it used to be.

The area near Hillview Street and Osprey Avenue is one of the city’s major commercial hubs.

Headlined by restaurants such as Libby’s Café & Bar and businesses including Morton’s Gourmet Market, Southside Village has been considered a destination in Sarasota. In Bilancini’s eyes, that reputation is outdated.

“This street was much better,” Bilancini says of the stretch along Hillview that includes Gecko’s Grill and Pub and the Five O’Clock Club. “Now, it’s almost empty — it’s completely changed.”

Bilancini is hopeful that things might turn around soon, though.

There’s buzz throughout the neighborhood that activity could pick up, thanks largely to the arrival of two new restaurants: Veronica Fish and Oyster, located

at 1830 S. Osprey Ave., and Mercato Pizzeria and Bar, located at 1936 Hillview St. Two major factors fuel the excitement for Veronica Fish and Oyster: It will occupy the building of former neighborhood anchor Sam Snead’s American Grill, and it’s a product of restaurateur Mark Caragiulo, co-owner of restaurants such as Owen’s Fish Camp, Caragiulo and Shore Diner.

Caragiulo lives in the area, which made opening a restaurant a particularly appealing prospect.

“I enjoy stopping at Perq for coffee or going to Morton’s and some of the other places,” Caragiulo said. “Selfishly, I wanted another great destination kind of in my backyard.”

His concept for the space is a supper club-style oyster bar, one that emphasizes the local seafood scene. He wasn’t deterred by the departure of Sam Snead’s, which originally closed in June 2014 before reopening in October of that same year. At the time, businesses expressed a similar excitement about the return of that res-

taurant — which ended up closing for good just four months later.

Caragiulo sees the corner of Hillview and Osprey as a major destination. He chalked up the Sam Snead’s closure to the natural life cycle of restaurants, and he’s eager to get started on his own project.

“Any restaurant that’s there for 11, 12 years is successful in my book,” Caragiulo said. “So no, there were no reservations at all.”

of Mercato Pizzeria and Bar. Having served as the chef at Hillview Grill, he heard the same concerns Bilancini did regarding the neighborhood’s declining popularity.

The building at 1936 Hillview, formerly The Table, has seen two tenants come and go in two years.

Like Caragiulo, Settimi wasn’t discouraged by the history.

“I think this space never had the right concept, to be honest with you,” Settimi said. “Now, I think it’s the right thing to bring

new people here.”

He acknowledges some early hesitation. Other businesses in the area encouraged him, telling him Southside Village was in need of an authentic Italian restaurant.

Originally from Rome, Settimi’s restaurant experience includes time as the owner of Matto Matto in Burns Court.

Eventually, he was convinced that Southside Village was a good fit. So far, the feedback has been positive. His impression of the neighborhood is that it’s trending in the right direction, though there’s still some skepticism.

“I think it’s a great place to come and dine, but I think there is a lot of work to do,” Settimi said.

“I think it’s a winning situation if we can keep it up.”

Settimi said Veronica’s opening would be a major step toward establishing the neighborhood as a restaurant destination. Settimi, Bilancini and Caragiulo agreed more high-quality establishments was good news for Southside Village as whole.

Mercato celebrated its grand opening earlier this month, but Veronica’s is still a few months away. Caragiulo has gotten some questions on his April opening date, but he’s intent on taking his time and getting everything right.

“Everyone’s saying, ‘Season, season, season!,’” Caragiulo said.

“But we plan on being there for 15 years, not 15 days. We’ll open when we’re ready.”

At the same time, it should be noted, the city’s role in such gatherings is to monitor them and keep order, not to subsidize them with taxpayer dollars.

Which brings us to the standoff that occurs in thousands of communities throughout the United States: Those who see the benefits of attracting large gatherings of people to their communities and those who see large crowds as a disruption to their financial well-being and quality of life.

This dilemma is analogous to the 50-year struggle throughout all of Florida: dealing with population growth. Thunder by the Bay is a microcosm. As Adam Smith put it: “The most decisive of the prosperity of any country is the increase in the number of its inhabitants.” Or: The late Professor Julian Simon, an economist at the University of Maryland who devoted much of writing and research to the effects of population growth, concluded in 1981: “There are not now, and there never have been, any empirical data showing that population growth or size or density have a negative effect on the standard of living.”

But of course, you also have the arguments that population growth, or a sudden influx of motorcyclists, creates negative effects — traffic, street closings, noise, disruption to local businesses, etc.

One of the primary challenges, then, is to figure out ways that the positives of population growth or an influx of motorcycles outweigh the negatives. This is the challenge for

Lucy Nicandri, Thunder by the Bay’s executive director and organizer, and her boss, the Suncoast Charities for Children board of directors. How can they turn downtown business owners affected by the event, as well as residents who don’t like it, into supportive fans?

They will never achieve 100% support. But as we wrote last week: “Collaboration and communication with all of the affected constituencies will be crucial, constructive and effective.” Such an effort can address how to make it better — e.g. location, time of year, how best to handle traffic, how to make beneficial for the maximum number of businesses.

To be sure, there always will be those who don’t want Thunder by the Bay, who believe the clientele doesn’t fit. But don’t kid yourself: Those older couples riding their big Harley-Davidsons are not gang members; many of them are wealthy doctors, lawyers and business people — the kind who have money to spend when they visit.

Or look at it this way: Thunder by the Bay, by comparison, creates nowhere near the inconvenience and disruption that the Firestone Grand Prix does in downtown St. Petersburg. For a month before the threeday races, that city erects miles of concrete fences downtown and during the weekend closes off multiple streets. And talk about noise.

In spite of this, the Firestone Grand Prix will celebrate its 13th season this March. The Grand Prix organizers and the city of St. Petersburg have figured out how to make it work.

How to end the jihad against the West

“The responses indicated that Thunder by the Bay was financially beneficial for 15 businesses. For 89 businesses, it was not good. For many, it was a disaster.”

When the city of Sarasota surveyed downtown businesses on how that weekend event affected them, an overwhelming majority said they don’t like it.

To be sure, you can understand the business owners’ displeasure.

When they bought or rented their downtown storefronts, they did so with an expectation that their location would serve their business goals and aspirations and be a place to do business peacefully, profitably and devoid of undue disruption.

What’s more, many of these business owners might argue that a couple thousand motorcycles and their roaring engines over a threeday period don’t qualify exactly as peaceful. In fact, many of the downtown merchants and restaurateurs would argue Thunder by the Bay exacts harm — on their financial well-being and quality of life.

You can identify with them. You wouldn’t want 1,000 motorcyclists gathered on your neighborhood street in front of your home. You would scream at City Hall to stop the disruption. You might even demand some type of compensation for your duress. After all, isn’t that the American way? Sue someone.

But at the same time, everyone engaged in American life knows we all have the right to gather peacefully and lawfully — in someone’s home, in an auditorium, in a public park or on public streets. See First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting … the right of the people peaceably to assemble …”

Which also is to say unexpected occurrences and the occasional disruption to routine — be they planned or spontaneous — are part of American life, part of our free society and human action. There is no such thing on Earth as paradise.

In short, there is no legal remedy to stop a peaceful (i.e. no violence or

unleashed its forces. America’s military combined with those of other Western nations could eliminate the entire field of enemy regimes and groups in short order — if the West chose to do so.

The jihad against the West persists only because the West has not chosen to end it. This is a moral atrocity.

Westerners have a selfish, moral obligation to end this assault on our lives and the lives of our loved ones. Permitting this enemy to remain in existence is like permitting known serial killers to roam our neighborhoods. It is sheer insanity.

It is time to end the insanity. It is time to end the jihad.

Importantly, by eliminating these murderous groups and regimes, we would not only solve the immediate problem of their existence; we would also strike a significant blow to the root of the longer-term problem.

By summarily eliminating the existing Islamic regimes and jihadist groups that have attacked the West, we would

significantly discredit the religion that motivates jihad and that will continue spawning more jihadists until it is discredited.

Although, as noted above, we cannot eliminate Islam (a body of ideas), we can discredit it — and doing so is an essential aspect of winning this war. By demonstrating to jihadists and would-be jihadists that their fantasy God is powerless against the West’s very real militaries — by showing them that Westerners can easily destroy the entire Muslim world if we so choose — we would show them that jihad is a thoroughly hopeless cause…

If we fail to eliminate the jihad-sponsoring regimes and jihadist groups, not only will existing jihadist cells attack the West; new jihadist cells will continue to form and attack as well. If, on the other hand, we end these regimes and groups now, we will cut our losses dramatically and take a giant step toward normal, jihad-free living. The correct choice couldn’t be clearer.

The speaker will be Lorrie Muldowney, immediate past manager of historical resources for Sarasota County, who, instead of retiring from her profession, is going into business as a consultant on historic preservation.

She has opened a consultation service based in Sarasota that, although it may take her to consultations around the country, will keep her available for local clients.

No one in the community is better prepared to assist clients regarding this topic. She earned her degrees specializing in it and has taught it through the graduate level. She is affiliated with local and national historic preservation organizations and a litany of professional planning organizations, and she has served in government positions focused upon the preservation of historical resources throughout her professional career.

Some initial history: Muldowney and I first crossed paths in 1984 in Sarasota, when she was working as a senior planner at the municipal government developing programs for his-

toric preservation and reviewing petitions for designation. The programs she developed for the city helped property owners evaluate and obtain designations for properties ranging from monuments to graveyards, homes, churches and commercial buildings to whole districts of the community.

At that time, I was beginning my association with the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation that had been founded

by Veronica Morgan with the objective of saving Owen Burns’ 1926 El Vernona Hotel (then dubbed the John Ringling Towers). I would have to write a tome to cover all of that history.

Muldowney was an invaluable consultant to that effort. She also advised me in my campaign to take Seagate, the Powel and Gwendolyn Crosley winter retreat on Sarasota Bay into public ownership. Although that campaign also played out over several years, the outcome was more positive.

In 1991, our community lost the close involvement of Muldowney as she pursued her education, began her teaching career in Gainesville as a professor at the University of Florida and explored professional options.

Some, including me, worried that she would never return as a resident, but in 1993, Muldowney was hired by Sarasota

El Nino will continue to make waves The weather phenomenon could interfere with beach plans over the next few months.

Are you dreaming of spending this winter on the beach while your friends up North are blanketed in snow? Think twice before you go into the water.

The weather phenomenon known as El Nino means more than just warmer water and rain for Sarasota County; it also means potentially dangerous surf. The county’s coastline, already pummeled by large storms three times since mid-December, will continue to see them throughout the spring.

During the last week of December, winds in excess of 40 mph near Texas sent 14-foot swell waves — large waves generated by distant weather systems — hurling toward Sarasota County beaches.

County lifeguards on Lido and Siesta beaches reported 28 rescues Dec. 29. Since then, at least two similar events, one Jan. 17 and Jan. 23, have produced unusually large waves and dangerous conditions.

Siesta and Lido beaches have each reported just one rescue during this month through Jan. 25, a reduction that could be the result of Gulf water temperatures dropping into the 50s since December, resulting in fewer swimmers.

Lifeguards fly green flags when there are minimal hazards to swimmers.

Yellow flags indicate increased risks. Purple flags are used when hazardous marine life is present. In extreme situations, a red flag with a “no swimming” symbol is used to warn swimmers that there is no safe access to the water.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration meteorologist Rodney Wynn said El Nino patterns push the Gulf stream farther south, allowing low pressure systems to form.

These cause storms and bring wind and rain to develop further south in the Gulf and track northeast, putting Florida’s Gulf coast in a position to receive the brunt of those storms.

Scott Montgomery, Sarasota County lifeguard manager, said lifeguards are highly vigilant during rough weather and take proactive measures to warn swimmers away from dangerous areas.

He urged beachgoers to heed lifeguards’ warnings and pay attention to the system of beach flags

“If we close a beach to swimmers to rough surf,” Montgomery said, “we tell people, ‘Don’t go swimming today. Go do something else; it’s not safe.’”

Montgomery said the preventative approach helps his lifeguards keep people from getting into serious trouble.

Although large waves by themselves can be dangerous, even small waves can cause rip currents, which occur when channels of water sweep away from shore, potentially pulling swimmers into deeper water. Other factors, such as rock jetties or piers, can cause rip currents when currents traveling north or south along the shoreline hit those structures and sweep out to sea.

Lifeguards, visitors and residents alike will have to contend with the effects of El Nino for several months.

Mike Halpert, deputy director of NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, said El Nino’s effects, which include excessive precipitation and below-average temperatures in our area, have not peaked yet.

The current El Nino, he said, is as strong as the one in 1997, tying for the strongest system on record, since the 1950s.

“The strongest impacts … will happen over the next couple of months,” Halpert said. “We would certainly expect impacts to continue well through the winter and through the early part of the spring.”

Music Half Marathon honors Sharon Butler STAFF WRITER

Paige Butler, 22, hopes to follow in the footsteps of her late mother, Sharon Butler.

On Feb. 7, when she crosses the finish line for the second Sarasota Music Half Marathon, she’ll be doing just that by carrying on her mother’s athletic legacy.

“My mom, she honestly was crazy,” Paige Butler said. “She just loved working out. She got me going when I was 13, and I did my first triathlon.”

On Sept. 6, 2015, Sharon Butler, 54, was riding her bicycle in Brentwood, Calif., where the family moved in 2014 after 16 years in Sarasota, when she was struck by a 28-year-old drunken driver. She died instantly.

“When I first heard, there was shock and disbelief,” Paige Butler said. “One of the first things that went through my mind is that my mom would have felt so bad for this guy because he was 28 years old… I could hear her say, ‘I would feel so awful for that guy because his life is ruined for making that mistake.’”

Sharon left behind her husband, Jim, and her four children, Hillary, Matthew, Paige and Bailey.

By running in the Sarasota Music Half Marathon, Paige Butler will raise money for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

out to run it, and it’s exciting.”

Family friend Barb Lancer contacted Sarasota Music Half Marathon co-owner Tony Driscoll and asked it would be possible to honor Sharon at the event.

“I approached the family first and said we would like to do something in this community that would honor her memory,” Lancer said.

Driscoll agreed, and they set up

a promotion to help raise money for MADD (see sidebar).

From the time the Butlers moved to Sarasota in 1998, Sharon was active in tennis and then triathlons. She completed three Ironman triathlons and was known in the community as a fierce competitor.

“She was always ahead of me a little bit,” said family friend Eve Goldberg. “She had four kids, and

I had three. It was reflective of our relationship.”

Goldberg and Sharon competed together for the first time in 2002, in the annual Sharks Siesta Key Triathlon. Goldberg and Sharon had decided to take up training at ages 40 and 41, respectively, to prove they weren’t “over the hill” and made a tradition of running it together.

In October 2015, less than a month after Sharon’s death, Goldberg ran the Sharks Siesta Key Triathlon alone for the first time and also won — another first for Goldberg, who says that probably wouldn’t have happened if her friend were competing.

“I’ve never won, because I was usually racing with Sharon,” Goldberg said.

Hillary Butler is proud to see her sister take on the challenge of the Sarasota Music Half Marathon, which her sister will follow with a half-Ironman triathlon in April.

“I think that my mom would be really moved by it and I think she would be really proud of my sister for even attempting it,” she said.

Goldberg won’t be able to compete in the Sarasota Music Half Marathon, but she plans to train for her first full Ironman triathlon. She’ll complete it with Paige Butler, who originally planned on participating in a full Ironman with her mother following her graduation from college in 2017.

“My one regret was not doing the full Ironman with her, and now, I’m going to do it with her daughter,” Goldberg said.

ROCKIN’ ROUTE The second Sarasota Music Half Marathon promises even more music this year, with 20 bands along the route. Runners will race over the John Ringling Causeway, loop around St. Armands Circle and continue on Bayfront Drive before heading through the McClellan and Cherokee Park North neighborhoods.

They will then turn around and run through Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and finish at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center.

Science Center revs up competition Teens have remote-control car racing down to a science at Suncoast Science Center.

By now, the batteries are dying in many of the remote-control cars given as holiday gifts.

But if you’re one of the seven high school SciCore Youth Vol-

unteers at the Suncoast Science Center who are organizing the Remote Control Car Open race March 5, you know how to maximize — or upgrade — the battery and juice it for all it’s worth.

The SciCore Youth Volunteers program brings together students with an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields and puts them in leadership roles.

Pine View senior Henry Tingle got invovled with planning the

concept for the race at the beginning of the summer, when he started volunteering at Suncoast.

“I was thinking that a car was something that was relatively simple and not many parts,” said Tingle, who is also building his own drone at the center. “They’re easier to modify, and automatically, (participants are) getting something that’s fun and enjoyable.”

Together, they have decided on every aspect of the competition, from its rules to the course.

Approximately 40 teams have signed up for the event, which includes a drag race portion, beauty competition and lap race.

Each team will begin with the same grade-A hobby remotecontrol car that can travel at speeds up to 20 mph without modification. Participants can modify cars, although there are a few basic rules.

Matthew Mason, whose involvement stems from his passion for radio control vehicles, said a price limit on upgrades makes the competition fair.

Jared White hopes that the program will introduce participants to new building methods and resources. Participants will have access to science center resources such as a 3-D printer and laser and vinyl cutters.

“Part of the plan is to teach them a specific machine, too, so they know what they’re doing,” White said.

Suncoast Executive Director Ping Faulhaber hopes the program will introduce younger students to new resources while building the same-age mentorship at the center.

“The whole thing is getting them to come here,” Faulhaber said. “They’re so passionate and excited.”

Bay Haven faculty steps up to challenge Principal Chad Erickson and faculty members set a healthy example for students with contests.

Bay Haven School of Basics Plus Principal Chad Erickson received a Fitbit activity tracker for Father’s Day last June.

“I got my wife one, and I didn’t want one,” Erickson said.

But when the 2015-16 school year started, Erickson began to wear it to work. He and a few other teachers who own Fitbits realized that the device allows them to invite one another to a group that keeps score of their steps.

Now, the phrase often heard around the Bay Haven’s campus is “Do it for the steps,” as teachers and administrators encourage one another in an ongoing Fitbit step challenge.

The challenge, dubbed the “Work Week Hustle,” has as many as 10 participants each week.

Members receive an invitation to the group and can decide whether to decline or join for the week.

Erickson organized the fiveday weekly competition because it seemed like a perfect fit for an atmosphere that requires employees to be on their feet much of the day instructing.

Throughout the day, participants can check on their progress and see who is in the lead for the day.

Consistent members are kindergarten teachers Mariah Giczewski, Sarah Nelson, Sarah Mickley, Jeannette Nowaski and Karly Cancellieri; Administrative Assistant Kathy Kennedy; second-grade teacher Rashea Johnson; and Erickson.

“We’re competitive, and we push each other,” Giczewski said.

Although the main goal is to be more active, the challenge also brings out employees’ competitive streaks.

“I am moving around more in my classroom intentionally, and at recess, I’m walking around everywhere,” Nowaski said.

But it’s Kennedy, the administrative assistant, who holds

the most weekly wins, averaging 20,000 steps a day — despite spending most of her time working in the front office and having limited opportunities to walk around campus.

“Whenever we see her creeping up in the total number of steps, we give her more work,” jokes Erickson.

Kennedy makes up for her sedentary hours at school after hours.

“If I see that I’m behind in steps, I’ll go home and jog in front of the TV,” she said On average, Erickson checks into classrooms and walks around the Bay Haven campus six times a day, but he admits that he might be squeezing in more walking

time to increase his rank.

“It’s really interesting to see what my average is and what are my lower days,” Erickson said.

The competitive side of the challenge has helped build camaraderie among staff. Some faculty members have encouraged their spouses to join, and educators from other schools, including Brentwood Elementary Principal John Weida, have also participated.

Students are aware of the challenge and ask teachers if they can try on their Fitbit bands.

“It makes me a better teacher,” Cancellieri said. “I’m doing a lot more circulating around the classroom because of it.”

New Azure condominium targets key movers As a developer prepares to begin construction on a 16-unit Palm Avenue condominium building, distinguishing the project in a competitive market is a priority.

There’s still more than a month until the planned groundbreaking for the Azure on Palm condominium project, but a crucial window has already opened for the developer and sales team.

Already, three of the 16 units have sold, and Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate associate Roger Pettingell said more people in the market for a condominium are beginning to signal their curiosity in the project.

With sales underway, a major challenge for builders in an increasingly crowded downtown residential market becomes clear: What makes one condo different from all the rest?

“When you have a lot of different developers, you can get caught up in the mix, and people can think it’s just one more thing,” Pettingell said.

That’s why Seaward Development is working to clearly define this project, located at 711 S. Palm Ave., and its target audience. The five-story building will feature

three-bedroom units, between 2,500 and 2,700 square feet each, priced between $1.4 million and $1.8 million. Located in a quieter section of downtown and boasting amenities such as a dog park, the idea was to create a substitute for the single-family home, a familiar option for people moving off the Keys and closer to the city.

All three of the early buyers hail from either Longboat or Siesta keys, which isn’t as surprising as it might sound, Pettingell said.

“Part of it is aging — they’ve had enough of the beach, or they’ve played every round of golf they can play,” he said. “Their interests gravitate toward the city. It’s a part of that whole life cycle we typically see in our buyers.”

Pettingell, too, has migrated into the city from Longboat Key, so to speak. Although his work once focused entirely on the barrier island, he’s begun to spread out to other parts of the region.

Seaward Development Principal Patrick DiPinto said Pettingell’s experience on Longboat made him a good fit for the Sarasota project.

“Thirty-some odd years ago, Roger started out his career in new construction, selling everything on Longboat Key,” DiPinto said.

DiPinto said Seaward plans to break ground on the Azure on Palm project in March, with about a year scheduled for the build-out process.

An elevator repair employee said the door would need to be replaced, which comes with a cost between $5,000 and $8,000.

LICENSE BAIT 8:43 a.m. — 400 block of North Allendale Avenue Lost/Found Property: A woman found two Florida license plates in her yard. She said she has had an ongoing problem with another woman, and believed the other woman threw them into her yard. The woman said the two have gone to court against each other multiple times. The woman had a video security system, but did not know how to operate them and the cameras were not pointed at the location of the license plates. An officer later made contact with the other woman and returned the license plates.

FEELING LUCKY 10:30 p.m. — 600 block of North Washington Boulevard Theft: A man went into a gas station convenience store and asked for a carton of cigarettes.

An employee at the store went into a back room to get the carton. When he returned, the man asked how much the cigarettes

NO SHOES, NO SHIRT Midnight — 3300 block of North Tamiami Trail Dispute: A man, wearing just his underwear, walked up to a police car and asked for a ride home. He said he was “turning a trick” with a girl named “Strawberry,” who left the house they were in and took all of his clothing with her. The man was adamant that he did not want the officers to make a report, and that he just wanted a ride to his house.

Officers located and arrested a man they suspected was responsible for the theft. While making the arrest, the officers also discovered the suspect was carrying drug paraphernalia.

s a center back defender, Etienne Behan doesn’t garner the same notoriety as his teammates on the opposite end of the field.

It’s a position the Riverview High senior has learned to accept.

But on those rare occasions when an opportunity presents itself for him to contribute to Riverview’s stat sheet, the Rams’ captain is more than willing to step up — even if that means taking a free kick in the biggest game of the season thus far.

With a district championship on the line, Behan took a free kick from about 40 yards out and used a crosswind to open the scoring in the 19th minute of the Rams’ Class 5A-District 8 championship match Jan. 22, at Lakewood Ranch.

“The wind took it a little bit, but it was a really good shot,” Lakewood coach Vito Bavaro said.

The goal, Behan’s fifth of the season, wasn’t enough to push the Rams past the Mustangs, who rallied back for a 3-1 victory, but it gave Riverview momentum against a Lakewood team it had lost to twice during the regular season.

“This team has a lot of heart,” Behan said. “So many times we’ve found a way to get back up, and these guys don’t always get a lot of admiration for how well we work together.”

Behan has always defined success by how well the team performs as a whole.

“I’m willing to do whatever the team needs,” Behan said. “It’s not glamorous play, but it needs to be done.”

“He never gives up and always puts the team first over his individual success,” Riverview coach Ed Stroop said of Behan. “Etienne has come to understand the success principles we have been teaching, especially that a loss is only a stepping stone to success.”

Behan is happy just to be on the field.

Four years ago, he was cut from the Rams varsity squad after a nagging back injury from a soccer game kept him from showing his full potential. He was bumped down to the Rams’ JV squad, where he earned the role of team captain.

Although he was grateful to be part of the team, he also knew what he was capable of accomplishing.

Senior McKenzie Lantz scored 30 points to lead the Sarasota Christian girls basketball team to a 56-48 overtime victory versus First Baptist Academy of Naples in its regular season finale Jan. 22.

RAMS’ NO. 1 FAN

“You look up to the older guys, and you want to get after it,” Behan said. “I did want to be out there. You want to play at a high level and show what you can do.”

The following season, Behan bounced back and made the Rams’ varsity squad as a starter.

That season, he helped the Rams capture their first district championship in 10 years after converting one of Riverview’s five penalty kicks.

After getting knocked out of the district tournament earlier than expected last season, Behan helped the Rams solidify a spot in this year’s regional tournament after holding Manatee scoreless in the second half of their district semifinal match Jan. 19.

Behan commands attention during practices and games, but off the field, it’s a different story for the self-proclaimed jokester.

“My demeanor definitely changes the moment the game starts,” Behan said. “I definitely get into it. I like to have fun and joke around, but when I’m on the field, it’s game time.”

This season, Behan organized social team dinners, typically at the nearest fast food place to alleviate nerves, especially during the week of the district tournament.

Behan and a few other teammates aren’t afraid to offer up jokes — typically at the expensive of the younger players — to lighten the mood.

When Etienne Behan isn’t on the field, the Riverview High senior can be found cheering on the Rams at just about every sporting event.

Behan enjoys watching everything from baseball — which he tried to play at one point but quickly gave up when he couldn’t hit the ball — to football.

For Behan, it doesn’t matter what sport he’s watching as long as he’s surrounded by his fellow classmates.

“I love my school,” Behan said. “I like watching sports and going to games.

It’s always entertaining. If I’m not playing, then I’ll be there cheering for them.”

One year, the players decided they would cut each other’s hair and sport their new hairdo the next day at school. The result?

A trip to the principal’s office for Behan and his teammates.

But fortunately, administrators learned it was all in fun.

“They all had each other’s backs and told the admin it was all voluntary,” Stroop said. “So all were cleared.”

“It’s always in good spirit, and we all laugh together,” Behan said.

“When we have better chemistry, we play better on the field. Knowing how players work, react and play in certain situations is very important to a game where one player’s commitment could make or break a game.”

Riverview will travel to Palm Harbor University for a Class 5A-Region 2 quarterfinal match Jan. 28, with the winner advancing to the regional semifinals Feb. 2 to face the winner of the other quarterfinal between Lakewood and Wiregrass Ranch.

“We want it, and we have a lot of heart carrying us,” Behan said.

“We have an opportunity to seize the moment. We just have to play together like we always have, but win or lose, it’s been a great experience.”

Rams fall short of title

T

he Riverview boys soccer team saw its title hopes slip away Jan. 22, as Lakewood Ranch scored three unanswered goals in the second half to beat the Rams 3-1 in the Class 5A-District 8 championship.

Riverview senior center back defender Etienne Behan scored the Rams’ lone goal on a free kick 19 minutes into the match.

As the district runner-up, Riverview will travel to Palm Harbor University for a Class 5A-Region 2 quarterfinal match at 7 p.m. Jan. 28. The winner will advance to the semifinals Feb. 2 to face the winner of the other quarterfinal between Lakewood and Wiregrass Ranch.

“Another goal would have really made a difference in the game, as we had them frustrated in the first half,” Riverview coach Ed Stroop said. “To their credit, they came out determined in the second half and scored two goals from us not clearing the ball well.

I believe we got a bit tentative trying to maintain a lead instead of playing our game.

“I am proud of the boys, as they fought hard until the end,” Stroop added. “We were disappointed at the result but know we will learn and get better for it. We are looking forward to our regional matchup against Palm Harbor on Thursday.”

Riverview point guard holds himself accountable P ractice makes perfect.

As children, the expression is drilled into our heads for just about every activity from riding a bike to organized team sports.

It’s a simple idea, but what happens when no one is watching? What happens when there’s no one there to hold you accountable?

It’s in those moments that athletes transform from players to all-around students of the game.

Riverview point guard D.J. Bryant is one of those players.

This past Sunday afternoon, I walked into the Rams gymnasium for a club volleyball interview — and who should I run into but the senior captain?

Bryant had set up an automatic ball return at the opposite end of the gymnasium and was firing shot after shot.

After a quick hello, I moved to the other side of the gym, and Bryant got back to work.

Did I mention Rams didn’t have practice that day? That’s dedication, and according to Riverview coach B.J. Ivey, it’s commonplace for Bryant.

“He is constantly finding time to get into the gym and work to improve his skills,” Ivey said.

I don’t know how long Bryant was there before I got there.

All I know is that the basketball return was still there as I was heading out the door some 45 minutes later — waiting for

Bryant to return from a much needed break, I presume.

With with every shot, Bryant, who signed with the University of Texas at Arlington in November, had a smile on his face. He may not lead the team in scoring this season, but Bryant’s work ethic speaks for itself.

“He is relentless in his pursuit to improve, not only as a player, but as a person and as a student,” Ivey said. “This mindset has rubbed off onto other players in our program due to the great example that he has set for his teammates.”

I think it’s safe to say, growing up, Bryant heard the old “Practice makes perfect” saying a time or two himself. nnn

Did you know there was a drought in Sarasota?

Well fear not, Cardinal Mooney fans: The drought is officially over. The Cougars boys soccer team captured its first district championship since 2003 with a 4-2 victory against district rival DeSoto County in the Class 2A-District 11 championship Jan. 21.

The two teams tied in their first regular season meeting, and DeSoto beat the Cougars 3-2 at home, but Cardinal Mooney was on the winning end of the decision that mattered most.

So what does this mean?

“It would mean everything to finally win a high school title,” said Cardinal Mooney

As the district champion, Cardinal Mooney will open the regional tournament Jan. 28, at home for the first time in 13 years. The last time that happened, the Cougars finished as the state runner-up.

After dropping off their luggage, students proceeded to booths to ensure they were physically fit, answer interview questions and provide information about where they would reside. After completing the course, Tide Anderson, dressed as Uncle Sam, welcomed students to America.

he courtyard at Phillippi Shores Elementary School was transformed Friday into Ellis Island for an annual project.

For five weeks, second grade students researched their heritages to learn how their families arrived in the United States. They celebrated their roots by dressing the part of immigrants from those countries as they made the staged journey from their homelands to America.

Students stumbled down the breezeway, pretending to be aboard a ship tossing through the rough waves of the Atlantic Ocean bound for Ellis Island.

Ryelee Lococo played the Statue of Liberty, shining her torch as a beacon of hope for the immigrants.

Selby Library looks into crystal ball at fundraiser

T

he Selby Public Library sprung to life for the sixth annual Looking Into the Crystal Ball fundraiser Jan. 13.

Friends of the Selby Public Library hosted the event to bring together the community. More than a dozen restaurants lined the library, serving signature entrees and sweets.

The evening progressed with backto-back performances by tap-dancing troupe The Flash Tappers of The Players Theatre and Dr. Marguerite Barnett with her twirling flame skirt.

Upstairs, a different kind of storytelling took place: Elysian Fields tarot and astrology readers were available to guests seeking a look at their futures.
