Mayor Erik Arroyo runs a tight ship when it comes to publicspeaking time limits at City Commission meetings. Just ask the Knights Who Say Ni. At City Hall, Arroyo regularly explains to speakers that they have three minutes to make their points. He reminds them that as the timer runs down, they should wrap up, though there is typically a five-second grace period in which to close. But when the bell rings, “you must stop.’’ On one occasion recently, he jokingly threatened offenders with reciting the city’s arcane tree ordinance as punishment. More recently, Arroyo again ran through his admonishments, warning anyone who droned on they’d “be sentenced to the mandatory minimum of having to recite your favorite quote from the 1975 hit film ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail.’” There were no offenders.

Temple pays tribute to trees Temple Emanuel paid tribute to the natural world by tending to its garden during its Tu B’Shevat celebration on Jan. 22. The annual tradition, also known as the Birthday of the Trees, brought parents, grandparents and children to the temple playground for a ceremony that encouraged taking care of nature. Temple members took part in nature-based activities that started with planting flowers. Families also decorated flower pots and tried out “tree yoga.” The celebration ended with songs, blessings, the audience hearing a story about trees and healthy snacks to enjoy for the ride home.
