Donor boosts Fab Lab

The Suncoast Science Center/Faulhaber Fab Lab recently received a $34,000 donation toward the purchase of new 3D printers.

The money — provided by a STEM-supporting donor who wished to remain anonymous — helped the lab acquire six printers that will create objects with precise detail.

“This equipment will be the gift that keeps on giving, providing opportunities for people of all ages to build creativity and technical skills while bringing their ideas to life,” Suncoast Science Center Executive Director Ping Faulhaber said.

The printers are in place and ready to use at the lab.

ayfront Sarasota’s iconic Unconditional Surrender was lifted from its base last week by crane and moved to a new location to the south as preparations begin for an adjacent road project.

The statue, depicting Alfred Eisenstadt’s famous photo from Times Square at the end of World War II, was carried from its original spot at the corner of U.S. 41 and Gulfstream Avenue to a new location in Bayfront Park.

Across the street, the red sculpture called Complexus was moved this week to a temporary home but will return when construction on the roundabout is complete.

Roundabout work is set to begin this spring.

Three gates across School Avenue on the campus of Sarasota High School were damaged when a car struck them early Monday, police said.

On Jan. 11, officers assigned to Sarasota High were notified that three vehicle access gates that close on School Avenue were damaged.

Officers reviewed security footage to learn a white Ford Escape with dark tinted windows traveling south on School Avenue around 12:10 a.m. failed to stop for a closed gate on the school’s property and struck it, which knocked the gate open. The SUV then struck two more.

Damage to the gates was estimated at $20,000.

A suspect vehicle has been identified and located and the investigation remains in progress, police said.

Sarasota Police closed a segment of Tamiami Trail near Sarasota Memorial Hospital on Saturday to investigate a report of a suspicious package.

The highway was closed between Hillview and Datura streets from around 3-4 p.m. as officers from the department’s Explosive Materials Unit examined the package. They ultimately discovered nothing dangerous.

Police said they received a call in the afternoon from employees of a FedEx location in the 1900 block of Tamiami Trail about a suspicious package.

After the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County depleted its supply of vaccines, Sarasota Memorial Hospital offered up doses this weekend to members of the public who were 65 or older.

CASE MANAGEMENT With COVID-19 rates rising this month, health officials are working to slow the spread and sort out issues with vaccine distribution.

huck Henry is concerned about the trends he sees in the COVID-19 data for Sarasota County.

Henry, administrator of the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County, briefed the County Commission on COVID-19 matters at the board’s meeting Wednesday. In addition to updating commissioners on rising positivity rates and case volumes, Henry also shared information about efforts to distribute COVID-19 vaccines, which has drawn criticism from residents who have been unable to secure appointments to get inoculated.

The seven-day positivity rate for COVID-19 tests in Sarasota rose above 8% on Jan. 5, staying above that mark through Wednesday and peaking at 8.5%, according to state data. That is the highest positivity rate in months, up from 2.5% to 4% in September.

Henry noted that Sarasota is averaging more than 220 new cases daily in January, a record high.

“We know that there’s a lot of virus circulating around our community right now, probably more than we’ve seen throughout this pandemic,” Henry said.

Henry said the rising case numbers are likely in part connected to behavior during the recent holiday season. Henry also suggested that fatigue and complacency might play a factor.

“We continue to encourage everyone to do the right things, but we’ve been in this for 11-plus months, and people are getting tired of those things, no doubt,” Henry said.

Although Henry said the data was “a little bit alarming,” some county commissioners sought to recontextualize the information.

Commissioner Mike Moran questioned the use of case volume as a key data point in Henry’s presentation, asserting that it was important to focus on positivity rate, a statistic that accounts for testing volume. Henry agreed that

test volume was useful information, but he said all data for Sarasota County is trending upward.

Commissioner Christian Ziegler asked for hospitalization numbers, which Henry said are short of the peaks Sarasota saw in the summer. At Sarasota Memorial Hospital, there were 79 patients Wednesday who had tested positive for COVID-19, 15 of whom were in intensive care.

SMH reported that 87.4% of its hospital beds and 77.8% of ICU beds were occupied.

Henry said advancements in treatment have likely contributed to lower hospitalization rates, but hospital space is in short supply during peak season, so the health department is stressing the importance of limiting the spread.

Ziegler asked whether preventing overrun at community hospitals was the goal of the health department’s COVID-19 strategy.

“For me, the underlying goal is to reduce infection and keep the community safe,” Henry said.

Unlike previous periods when Sarasota reported high COVID-19 rates, local officials are not discussing any major policy changes designed to limit the spread of

the disease. A September executive order from Gov. Ron DeSantis limited local governments’ ability to implement regulations, such as mask requirements or business closures. In an email, a city spokesperson said city administration had no plans to change the COVID-19 policy in place.

At Wednesday’s County Commission meeting, Ziegler pointed out Sarasota’s positivity rate is lower than the state average, which has recently been higher than 10%. Despite Henry’s concerns, Ziegler suggested Sarasota’s data would influence officials as they consider whether policy changes are warranted.

“It’s one thing to say your numbers are high, and all this stuff’s happening, but if it’s high around the country and across the state, we’re limited in how much impact we can have,” Ziegler said.

Henry emphasized he wasn’t saying there’s cause for alarm, but he also said vigilance is important because of the effects COVID-19 can have in communities that fail to slow the spread. Commissioner Al Maio echoed Henry’s call for the public to continue to adhere to safety protocols.

County commissioners were relieved to learn the health department is working to replace the system it’s using to schedule vaccination appointments.

The health department’s use of Eventbrite, a ticketing website, has drawn criticism. Henry said the department is facing a challenge because of the degree to which demand outweighs supply: More than 150,000 people in Sarasota are in the first category eligible to receive a vaccine, which includes those over 65 and front-line health care personnel.

So far, the county has received 5,900 vaccines in three weeks.

“It is like trying to get a ticket for the hot concert,” Henry said.

Henry said the department is working with the state and Sarasota County to set up a new registration system. Henry said a new system would allow residents to place their name on a waiting list to avoid a daily effort to secure a reservation. Ziegler said he believed that change would address the loudest concerns.

“What I’ve heard from citizens is, ‘Look, I’m fine being No. 74,132 as long as I know I have a place in line,’” Ziegler said. “Right now, they just feel like they go on that site, and when they hit it, it’s sold out.”

Henry said he expected the new system to be functional by next week and would accommodate individuals without computers.

On Monday, the local health department reported it had depleted its supplies and was not getting additional supplies. Later that day, the Florida Department of Health announced it was sending 1,000 vaccines.

Florida Department of Health spokesperson Jason Mahon said the communication error arose because the state revised a preliminary distribution plan.

“We’re not worried about miscommunication over the course of a couple of days as much as we are about getting it right,” he said.

Health department officials were hopeful vaccine supplies would be more plentiful in coming weeks.

Although county leaders noted they play a limited role in the state- and federal-led effort, Henry credited local officials with making themselves available to help however they could.

“We’re collectively trying to do everything we can,” Henry said.

he City Commission is revising its schedule to meet exclusively in the evenings, a move that came after a series of discussions revealed divisions among elected officials on procedural matters.

At a Jan. 4 meeting, the commission voted 4-1 to move to a new calendar in which the board will meet up to four times a month. The commission will meet from 6-10 p.m. on the first and third Monday and Tuesday of each month, with Tuesday meetings held only as necessary for major discussion items. The new schedule will take effect Feb. 1.

Commissioners Erik Arroyo and Hagen Brody led the push to move away from the schedule of semiweekly meetings beginning at 1:30 p.m. Arroyo and Brody said they believed moving meetings out of the traditional workday would provide benefits for commissioners and the public.

“I think it puts us on the right track to become a very efficient city where people are engaged, and we have predictability,” Arroyo said.

Commissioner Jen AhearnKoch cast the vote against the new meeting schedule. AhearnKoch said she did not see a problem with the length of commission meetings and expressed concern that holding four meetings a month could interfere with commissioners’ schedules.

Although city administration

said they thought evening meetings could be accommodated without negatively affecting staff schedules, Ahearn-Koch encouraged management to track any budgetary impacts attributable to the change.

“If it’s going to potentially save us money, we should know that,” Ahearn-Koch said. “If it’s costing us money, we should know that, too.”

The commission also directed staff to explore opportunities for members of the public to provide input at meetings via prerecorded videos.

Ahearn-Koch has been a critic of another recent change to the commission’s meeting procedures. Brody, selected as mayor in a 3-2 commission vote in November, has sought to implement more rigorous time limits throughout board meetings.

That includes imposing limits on the amount of time commissioners have to ask questions during public hearings, which led to a standoff between Brody and Ahearn-Koch at the Jan. 4 meeting as she challenged his authority to establish the restrictions.

City Attorney Robert Fournier said the commission as a body needed to set its rules of procedure. Subsequently, the board voted 3-2 to maintain time limits on commissioner questions for a series of Jan. 4 public hearings.

Ahearn-Koch and Alpert cast dissenting votes; Brody, Arroyo and Kyle Scott Battie formed the majority.

Siesta Key residents again argued for hours Monday night over a proposal for a new hotel just south of Siesta Village, which is one of three projects Siesta residents oppose.

Developers proposed three hotel projects for Siesta Key, which, if approved, could have long-term implications to Sarasota County’s density and transient accommodation regulations. The projects are: n A proposal by attorney Gary Kompothecras to build a sevenstory, 120-room hotel and a fivestory parking garage along Old Stickney Point Road and Peacock Road; n Siesta Key Beach Resort and Suites Owner Mike Holderness’ proposal to increase his property from 55 to 170 rooms; and n Robert Anderson’s proposal for a seven-story, 170-room hotel off Calle Miramar. Plans also call for a restaurant, bar and 223-space parking garage.

In a workshop to discuss Anderson’s hotel on Monday, residents argued the hotel would exacerbate traffic in Siesta Village and bring an unwanted transient nature to the barrier island.

“We’d have to go back through a process to amend key aspects of the plan,” Klepper said. “It’s crude.”

The Siesta Key Coalition, an organization that began in opposition of the hotels, is requesting the county handle all three hotel proposals at one time.

Two of the three developers are requesting revisions to the county’s long-range growth map out of cycle, which would allow the developers to build outside current regulations. If approved, it could mean a countywide shift in development restrictions.

Mark Spiegel, the chair of the Siesta Key Coalition, said the County Commission and Planning Commission should consider “the collective adverse impact of all pending hotel development projects on or near Siesta Key.” “These hotels will collectively add 460 rooms with the prospect of an additional 1,000-plus transient guests spilling onto Siesta Key roads and beaches in high season,” Spiegel said.

“I find that the proposal is detrimental to the health, safety, order, comfort, convenience and appearance of the neighborhood,” resident Joyce Kouba said. “I find the project is not adequately buffered to effectively separate traffic, visual impact and noise from existing use.”

Kelley Klepper, a land-use planner for developer KimleyHorn, said primary access will be limited to Calle Miramar, and an easement will be added along Beach Road to restrict vehicular access.

The hotel proposal seeks to eliminate the counting of hotel rooms for units-per-acre density purposes and includes modifications to the county’s Future Land Use Policy, which applies to residential density limits on the

county’s barrier islands.

Anderson’s hotel would sit on just less than 1 acre in Siesta Key’s Overlay District. It would need a special exception to allow its proposed height of 80 feet — the maximum height allowed by right is 35 feet.

The county currently allows up to 13 units per acre with a kitchen or 26 units per acre without a kitchen on the property. Anderson proposes 170 units on 1 acre.

Residents say the projects would set a “dangerous precedent” if approved.

Klepper said the developers are proposing a binding development concept plan which, if approved by the County Commission, would be adopted as part of the approval process. It would set limits on any future amendments

“Our appointed and elected representatives have a responsibility, one they took seriously in the 1999 process, to understand the implications and legal precedents that the proposed developments would have on our barrier island,” Spiegel said.

Among the coalition’s concerns are: n Allowance of the project would set a legal precedent for the other 30 acres of commercially zoned property on the Key; n There has never been a comprehensive vehicle and pedestrian traffic study for the whole of Siesta Key, so it is hard to determine how large-scale projects would affect the island; and n Developers have “no logical answer” for how their transient guests would safely get to and from the beaches.

Spiegel said county leaders need to listen to the “overwhelming concerns” of Siesta residents.

“We need those representatives to lead, bring solutions to traffic and beach challenges, find answers within existing regulations and codes, not open the floodgates to high-rise, transient accommodations that will put at risk what makes our barrier island such an attractive destination,” he said.

The County Commission will meet Jan. 26 to vote on an out-ofsync comprehensive plan amendment and Unified Development Code amendment for the project.

hen the City Commission endorsed a plan for renovating Bobby Jones Golf Club in February 2020 — the third design concept the board selected in as many years — officials believed they were making a final decision on a project that had been discussed for more than five years.

Now, after input from a newly elected commissioner, the future of Bobby Jones appears to once again be up for debate.

Commissioner Erik Arroyo placed an item on the board’s Jan. 4 agenda seeking to revisit plans to renovate the city-owned course. In a presentation, Arroyo was critical of the process that led to the chosen design, adding that the city’s financial outlook had changed because of COVID-19.

“We need to adapt to what’s going to be happening in terms of decreased revenues,” Arroyo said.

The city’s plans for Bobby Jones would reduce the footprint of the course from 45 to 27 holes — 18 regulation and a par-3 course of nine holes. The project would include 130 acres of newly cre-

The city estimated the cost of the golf improvements and the first phase of the park project at $21.4 million.

Arroyo argued that the city had not sufficiently considered alternatives after selecting golf architect Richard Mandell to make recommendations on renovations and produce detailed designs for the project. Arroyo noted city management had not brought proposals from private operators to lease and manage the course to

the commission’s attention. He suggested the city should consider a public-private partnership and reengage with potential stakeholders who could contribute to the renovation effort. “[This] can cost zero in taxes if we engage a professional golf facility management company that’s willing to invest, and we give them a lease,” Arroyo said.

Commissioners Jen AhearnKoch and Liz Alpert noted the city had spent a lengthy amount of time since 2014 researching options for Bobby Jones before

settling on the selected project. Ahearn-Koch said she was opposed to the prospect of leasing the land to a private operator.

“We’ve explored that topic in the past and have voted and decided against it,” Ahearn-Koch said.

Both Ahearn-Koch and Alpert questioned whether it was too late to alter the plans for the golf course. The city agreed to pay Mandell just more than $1 million for his design work, with $100,000 still remaining for construction administration. The city is preparing to seek bids to select a contractor for the project, interim City Manager Marlon Brown said.

Commissioners Hagen Brody and Kyle Scott Battie said they were interested in getting more information from staff on the state of the project, but they stopped short of endorsing Arroyo’s call to terminate the contract with Mandell. The commission voted 4-1 to hold a workshop on the Bobby Jones renovations at a date to be determined, with Ahearn-Koch casting the dissenting vote.

That workshop will guide whether the commission ultimately pursues any changes to its plans for the city-owned golf course.

“I think we really need to focus on this issue as a commission and see if a public hearing is actually necessary,” Brody said.

COURSE CORRECTIONS The City Commission’s consideration of a renovation project at Bobby Jones dates to September 2014, when the board created a committee to produce recommendations on a master plan for the course.

Here are a few key dates: December 2015: The Bobby Jones Golf Club Study Committee recommends maintaining the 45-hole course layout and spending $14.5 million on renovations.

January 2017: The city hires golf architect Richard Mandell to develop a master plan for the property.

September 2017: Mandell recommends a 45-hole renovation project that eliminates the American and British course designations at an estimated cost of $21.6 million.

December 2018: City Commission votes to pursue a 45-hole renovation project to cost $16.7 million.

September 2019: City Commission votes to pursue a 36-hole renovation project estimated to cost $15 million. The design incorporates more than 47 acres of nongolf parkland.

February 2020: City Commission votes to pursue an alternate 27-hole renovation project that includes 130 acres of nongolf parkland.

Cost of the improvements and phase one of the park estimated at $21.4 million.

State may avert crisis Hospital staffing shortages and burnout are cause for concern.

W

ith fears of a postholiday surge in COVID-19 cases building on already rising infection rates, concern that the health care system could be overwhelmed is persistent.

Although most states are not experiencing shortages of ICU beds, hospital staffing shortages and burnout are cause for concern. Nearly all 50 states, including Florida, have responded to this threat by loosening or suspending licensing restrictions for health care workers.

In March 2020, Gov. Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-52, which declared a state of emergency in Florida and allowed health care workers licensed in other states to provide care in Florida. Those licensing exemptions came with the caveat that their services “be rendered to such persons free of charge and … under the auspices of the American Red Cross or the Florida Department of Health.”

Later that month, an emergency order from the state surgeon general, Scott Rivkees, further expanded licensing exemptions for out-of-state health care workers for a period of 30 days. That order has since been extended until the end of Florida’s state of emergency, which expired Jan. 2.

These temporary actions could go a long way toward addressing the current crisis, but another long-term threat requires permanent reform. Florida had a problem with not having enough medical professionals even before the pandemic. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the U.S. is expected to experience a shortage of up to 139,000 physicians by 2033. In Florida, there are already 279 designated primary care health professional shortage areas covering a population of more than 6.66 million Floridians. An additional 1,793 physicians are required to fill the need in those areas. Projections from the Department of Health and Human Services estimate that the shortage of primary care physicians in Florida will more than double to 4,671 by 2030.

Sarasotans already feel the bite of these shortages as new residents struggle to find doctors, especially specialists, willing to take new patients.

Fortunately, Florida has been leading the way on reforms to

address the looming physician shortage. In 2019, the Florida Legislature took substantial steps toward clearing the way for telehealth providers to operate in Florida. Telehealth services allow health care professionals to provide care remotely through telecommunication or other digital communication technologies. Florida’s recent reforms allow health care professionals licensed in other states to provide telehealth services in Florida without obtaining a separate Florida license. However, they are still required to register as a telehealth provider in the state of Florida.

In 2020, Florida passed comprehensive Scope of Practice reforms to expand the role of nonphysician providers. Scope of Practice refers to the range of services a health care professional is allowed to provide under state law. Florida’s recent reforms will allow nurse practitioners to practice autonomously without the supervision of a physician. NPs are also now allowed to sign documents that would otherwise require the signature of a physician. Pharmacists in Florida can now test for common illnesses, such as strep throat and the flu. In most other states, pharmacists are allowed to administer vaccines but may not provide tests for those common illnesses.

Although these reforms are meaningful, the scale of the looming shortage requires further action. First, temporary measures allowing out-of-state providers to practice in Florida should be made permanent.

Florida already belongs to the interstate Nurse Licensure Compact, which provides a streamlined process for registered nurses licensed in other compact member-states to obtain a Florida license. However, Florida is not a member of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact or the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Compact, which would create similar streamlined processes for physicians and APRNs licensed in other states.

Florida should join the IMLC and APRN Compact, but interstate compacts are not the best available solution. For one, compacts only affect one group of health care professionals at a time. Although there are compacts for physicians, RNs

and APRNs, there are no such compacts for pharmacists or physician assistants. Moreover, compacts rely on widespread adoption to be effective. The NLC has been adopted by 33 states and the IMLC currently includes 29 states. However, the APRN Compact has not been adopted by any states.

Much better would be to simply recognize all licenses issued by other states provided that health care professionals obtain appropriate liability coverage in Florida. Other states including Arizona, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Montana have already passed universal license recognition laws to allow medical professionals — and all other licensed workers — to more easily obtain a license.

Second, Florida should embrace innovative technologies in the health care industry and avoid policies that could prevent such innovation from taking place. For example, a growing body of evidence suggests that artificial intelligence is capable of diagnosing some diseases as well or even more accurately than physicians. Although this technology is a long way off from replacing physicians, it could become an essential aid to physicians in the near future and help them be more productive and help more patients.

Florida should be cautious to avoid limiting the potential of new technologies in health care settings.

State responses to the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the drawbacks of state-by-state medical licensing regimes. Although temporary suspensions of these licensing rules have helped alleviate staffing shortages during the current crisis, the looming shortage of physicians poses a longer-term threat to Florida’s health care workforce. Florida lawmakers should therefore consider permanent reforms to allow out-ofstate health care professionals to more easily practice in Florida and embrace the potential of technological innovations.

Unprecedented damage to the nation It was with great sadness that I read your editorial of Jan. 7.

In the face of armed insurrection, resulting in five deaths, you refer to the terrorists as idiots and protesters. Of course they are neither. To you, Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Josh Hawley and all those who are continuing to support the big lie, including Rick Scott and Vern Buchanan, shame on you.

As you and they know, if there were any evidence of widespread voter fraud that could have affected the election’s outcome, it would have been presented weeks ago. There is none, and those of you who support that lost cause are doing unprecedented damage to our democracy.

After all, the buzzwords “not fair” and “not equitable” are as incendiary as “Remember the Maine!” whereby the yellow journalism of the waning years of the 1890s incited the Spanish-American War to a gullible public that eagerly purchased and devoured the newspapers of the day as they were manipulated to do.

Today, diversity and equality are the new gospel presented as soothing and cuddly aspirations and mantras as preached by totalitarians and authoritarians throughout history.

Current yellow journalism is more widespread: newspapers, MSM, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, videos, etc. Its viruses of slanted editorializing comments pose as news and are accepted as such even by those supposedly educated and intelligent. It is viewed by them and those higher on the gullibility scale as a call to arms akin to the Catholic Church demanding a show of faith by knights to become the Crusaders, or radical Imams ordering the faithful to terrorism and suicide.

The message is always the same: the “woke,” the true believers, those anointed to inherit the Earth, those chosen by God, must destroy the “others.”

In fact there are political gods here walking among us (of course from a distance and protected by walls and armed security that will be denied to the peasants), such as Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren and others of an elitist, controlling hypocritical cabal along with

their MSM mouthpieces that have repeatedly stated “You did not build that,” which suggests “You do not own that.” They are Rasputins whispering evil and doubt into the trusting ears of the Russian Czar and his queen, and we know where that led.

And when the many leftleaning mayors and governors of major cities not only allow but also encourage the violence we have all seen for most of 2020, is it any wonder the desperate, degenerate, criminal and thrill-seekers feel they are free to pursue their nefarious activities? And to cap it off, when the “others” (presumably Trump supporters escalating from a rally to breaching the Capitol) are not given the same “freedom to exercise our rights,” in the near future a conflict of historical ferocity will unfold.

All such players, from the highest-elected government officials (who will be like the Wicked Witch of the West releasing her flying monkeys but safely observing the destruction they have unleashed from the castle via a pre-TV glass globe) to those whose minds have been poisoned by extreme views from so-called leaders from either side, to those indoctrinated in what used to be our respected institutions of, ahem, higher learning to a generation socially inept and shallow and desensitized by hours engaging in useless video games glorifying such violence are and will be culpable.

So when they come for you, they are coming to collect what you “stole” from them. After all, you did not build that. And

Major road projects starting on Siesta Key in 2021 BRYNN MECHEM STAFF WRITER

Following the county’s road swap with the Florida Department of Transportation and in preparation of new developments, Siesta Key-area roads will undergo several major projects in 2021.

In the swap, which took more than two years to negotiate, the county gave FDOT control of River Road, which connects Interstate 75 to North Port, in exchange for stretches of Stickney Point Road, North Midnight Pass Road, Higel Avenue and Siesta Drive.

Now construction will begin on projects associated with the swap and with the mixed-use development Siesta Promenade.

County commissioners agreed to include an initiative to fund safety improvements in the nearly 90-degree curve intersection at Higel Avenue and Siesta Drive.

As a result of the swap, FDOT gave the county about $360,000 for the project.

Residents have long complained about the intersection, calling it dangerous for both

motorists and pedestrians. Several residents formed the organization Make Siesta Drive Safer in the hopes of initiating change at the intersection.

MSDS President Pat Wulf said the road swap provided the organization a more direct route to road improvements.

“What we found was the closer we got to the local government, the better off we were in terms of what we might be able to do,” Wulf said.

Improvements will include updated asphalt and striping, additional signs, guard rails, traffic separators and flashing beacons.

According to county documents, the project will be completed in three segments, which include: n Improvements on Higel Avenue and Siesta Drive to greaten visibility; n A crosswalk on Higel Avenue at the intersection of North Shell Road; and n A crosswalk on Siesta Drive at the intersection of Old Oak Drive.

Construction is expected to be complete by spring.

At the same time, work will begin on the southern portion of the key.

Although a specific installation schedule has not yet been formalized, FDOT approved work on a traffic signal at the mainland intersection of Stickney Point

Road and Avenue B and C. The signal will be added as part of the Siesta Promenade project, a mixed-use development planned at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Stickney Point Road.

Before approving the project, county commissioners said the traffic signal, which will control traffic leaving Siesta Promenade, would have to be installed.

Developer Kimley-Horn requested two permits for the project and will begin work in 2021.

Throughout the approval process of Siesta Promenade, residents worried the addition of a traffic light would exacerbate backups on Stickney Point Road, which serves as one of two entrances to the Key. The last project will be a roundabout at the intersection of Beach Road and Midnight Pass Road, despite much opposition from residents.

Public Works Director Spencer Anderson said the roundabout, which is located just south of the main public Siesta Key Beach access, would be more efficient at continuing a flow of traffic than a traditional intersection.

Improvements to the intersection have been in the works since 2015, and the project will be funded by FDOT as part of the road swap.

of a roundabout, so they began designing improvements to the signalized intersection already in place. The county will now have to fund designs for the roundabout, which will cost about $300,000.

The roundabout will have three approaches with two lanes in the center. In addition to pedestrian spaces on the north and west side, a pedestrian crossing would be added on the east side of the intersection.

The pedestrian crossings would be built farther from the intersection to improve safety, and Anderson said there is potential for the addition of HAWK on-demand crossing beacons. Cyclists will be directed away from the traffic flow, so they don’t intervene with motorists.

Still, residents worry the intersection will be unsafe. Margaret Jean Cannon, a board member

of SKA, said she lives near main Siesta Key public beach access and finds it difficult to navigate Beach Road during season.

“Going down this way, of people crossing the road, as well as cars exciting the beach, it’s going to push the traffic even further,” Cannon said. “It’s going to push the traffic all the way to Siesta Isles.”

Commissioner Christian Ziegler questioned whether a roundabout would impede the operations of the firefighters at Station No. 13, directly north of the intersection. Anderson said he did not anticipate any problems related to slower call times, and the roundabout will be designed to handle vehicles of all sizes.

Designs for the roundabout are due to FDOT by fall 2021, and construction on the project is expected to begin in 2022.

W

hen it comes to finding revenue sources, Sarasota County School officials say things are looking up — to the top of cellphone towers, to be precise.

District leaders hope to outsource control of the district’s cell towers to generate more revenue and possibly erect more towers throughout the district.

There are five cellphone towers in school campuses throughout the district: at Pine View School, Suncoast Technical College, Gocio Elementary, Sarasota High and Venice High. Contracts for most of the towers were created in the late 1990s or early 2000s and need to be renewed.

Chief Operations Officer Jody Dumas said it takes the planning department a lot of effort to keep up with the contracts, and he would prefer employing a company with expertise in the industry.

So he proposed entering a contract with a third-party operator to control the district’s towers and the subleases associated with them.

“At the end of the day, we don’t have the expertise in the cell tower industry to know that we’re doing the right things at the right time and maximizing our use of these assets,” Dumas said.

Already, the district has received projections from a company called Milestone that would run the county’s towers for a portion of the revenue from subleases.

According to proposal documents, Milestone would share 10% of the revenue on current subleases. The district would then receive 25% of the revenue on any new leases it brings in.

Milestone projections show that with current towers, the district would collect an additional $340,000 over a 10-year period.

Additionally, Milestone proposed 13 district campuses where it could build new towers.

If the district agrees, Milestone would fund 100% of the design and $45,000 in construction fees.

“On some of the proposed campuses I think we would definitely say, ‘No, that’s not an area we’d like to have a cell tower,’” Dumas said. “However, there are

some opportunities on some of our properties where we could place some additional towers that would integrate into kind of what we’re already doing.”

Dumas highlighted high schools that are anticipating new football or soccer fields as an example.

Cell towers could be built into the stadium lighting poles, so the district could receive revenue off of an item that already has to be built.

The current cell towers at Sarasota High School are built into the stadium lighting.

Additionally, Dumas said Milestone would provide liaison services to residents who live near any proposed new tower.

Questions about radiation or unsightliness would be directed to Milestone, not the school district.

Micki Ryan, the school district’s director of planning, said two of the leases that are up for renewal also don’t allow the district to receive money for co-location on the tower because the contracts were drawn up before co-location existed.

Co-location is the process of housing private servers and networking equipment in a third party center, like a tower.

With the board’s approval, Dumas said staff will now offer a Request for Proposal to allow multiple companies to submit bids.

Once a company is chosen, the district will work over the next two years to bring the current towers under management and then begin bringing proposals for new towers before the board for approval.

Stakeholders teamed up to apply a vibrant green coat of paint to a fence on a site the city has negotiated to purchase with the intent to turn it into public green space.

Although the city has budgeted $890,000 to buy a quarter-acre at 531 Central Ave. and 1386 Boulevard of the Arts, the Rosemary District Association is raising an additional $120,000 necessary to complete the $1.01 million purchase. In October, the city and the neighborhood agreed to team

up on the acquisition of the property, hoping to fulfill residents’ requests to create parkland.

With a closing date at the end of the month, the neighborhood hasn’t secured all of the money it needs, but association leaders are optimistic about hitting their mark. Rosemary District Association President Debbie Trice said the group solicited donations from throughout the neighborhood, hoping to create a shared sense of ownership.

In addition to some large contributions, Trice said the association received about 100 small donations from within the neighborhood, with gifts ranging from $10 to $250.

“This is really a communitywide effort,” Trice said.

The City Commission is scheduled to vote on finalizing a purchase agreement at its Jan. 19 meeting. Although the land acquisition is not yet final, Rosemary District residents have had preliminary conversations about their ideas. Based on input the association has received, Trice said residents are interested in making the park a hub for activity.

In an area composed primarily of multifamily housing, Trice said neighbors are excited about having a place to gather with friends

or walk their dogs. “People want to use the park,” Trice said.

The neighborhood has also talked to city staff about how the process of designing the park might play out. David Lough, a member of the Rosemary District Association board, said residents wanted to continue to work in close collaboration with city staff on developing a vision for any project. Lough said the association was brainstorming options for adding features to the park, making it a destination the neighborhood would be eager to use even if they don’t live next door.

“We don’t want this to be an Ikea model, a cookie-cutter kind of thing,” Lough said. “We want a quality park, without going too over the top.”

In an email, city spokesperson Jan Thornburg said tentative plans call for the park to be designed in fiscal year 2021 and constructed in fiscal year 2022.

“Once the properties are acquired, staff will move forward with scheduling community meetings, which will be conducted with the assistance of a landscape architect,” Thornburg said.

As the association has worked to raise money, both Trice and Lough said enthusiasm for a park project is palpable. Lough noted that this isn’t the first time people have lobbied for a park in the Rosemary District, but following a population boom in the neighborhood associated with new construction, he said the idea has gained new traction.

“We’re getting incredible engagement,” Lough said.

Rosemary District leaders hope that in the not-too-distant future, engagement will have translated into a park the neighborhood can call its own.

ongboat Key-based Roger Pettingell is again Manatee and Sarasota counties’ top real estate agent in terms of the value of total sales volume.

Area Multiple Listing Service data show the Coldwell Banker Realty agent has topped the list of agents for the 11th year in Manatee and Sarasota counties. Pettingell finished 2020 with about $175.57 million in closed sales.

Another $30 million is pending, according to a Coldwell Banker Realty news release.

“The strength and stability of the local luxury real estate market is truly remarkable and is reflected in what has been the best year in my career,” Pettingell said. “The pandemic caused a seismic shift to my clients’ priorities, work arrangements and desire for more space, and we’ve seen tremendous migration from the Northeast and Midwest.”

Walter Maurice Harold Budde, Jr. PhD succumbed to COVID – 19 on December 4, 2020 in Sarasota, Florida after a valiant battle.

Walter was born in Minneapolis, MN, to Helen and Walter Budde, Sr., and graduated from Cretin High School in St. Paul, MN. He attended the University of Minnesota, earning a degree in Organic Chemistry. He earned his master’s degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Indiana, where he met his future wife and lifelong companion, Jacqueline Hyberg Budde. The couple moved to Iowa City, where they were married on June 6, 1948. Walter obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry as well as a minor in Chemical Engineering from the University of Iowa at age 23.

Walter and Jackie had five children: Jann Logsdon (Pete Rutledge) and Jann’s children Michael (Victoria Adams) and Jessica Dozier (Ryan) and their son Declan; Carl (Mari) and their daughters Sonja (John Nelson), and their children Jayson, Scarlett, Jasmine, and Sierra; Sylvia (Matthew Korpela), and their children Phoebe Sue and Rogan Carl; and Shannon (Robert Washington); Fred (Linda) and their daughter Anna Budde (Michael Leininger) and their daughter Antonia; Mernie (Jodi) and their children Derek (Molly), their children Henry, Vivian, and Charlie; Amanda, and Amy Budde; and Edward (Gina) and their children Sarah Budde Rodriguez (Michael),

Katrina Zwack (Tyler), and John Budde.

Walter is survived by his sister, Helen Weides. He was predeceased by Jacqueline, their son Carl, his parents Walter Sr. & Helen, and sister Mildred Speeter.

Walter was a professor of Organic Chemistry at Loyola University Chicago before joining Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), eventually becoming the director of research and development. Rather than move to Ohio when ADM sold off their chemical division, he moved on to Burlington Industries near Greensboro, NC, focusing on self-extinguishing fibers. (Coincidentally, his son Fred’s first assignment in 1979 as a new chemical engineer was the self-extinguishing fiber polymer manufacturing line at Monsanto.) Walter’s stay at Burlington lasted only one year, as he and two fellow former ADM employees founded Viking Chemical Company in Blooming Prairie, MN in 1969. He served as its Vice President and Technical Director and later President until his retirement in 1986.

Walter was world-renowned in peroxygen chemistry, especially the formation of

peroxyacids and their use for the synthesis of epoxides. He had ten composition of matter and process patents in this field, leading to products such as IV bags, food wrap, synthetic sandalwood oil, functional fluid stabilizers, and many adhesives and coatings. Chances are you use something in your daily life that can be traced back to a patent that Walter held.

His greatest joys were listening to classical music, reading, gardening, playing baseball, softball, and tennis with his children, and later watching the Minnesota Twins and the Tampa Bay Rays. Walter owned two farms, including 203 acres on the Mississippi River outside of Bemidji, MN because he believed his children would benefit from being raised in a more rural setting. Improving his mathematics skills was a lifetime pursuit. He especially liked challenging himself by revisiting his algebra, trigonometry, and calculus textbooks, especially when his sons were pursuing their engineering degrees.

After retiring, he was able to immerse himself in his love for classical music, by returning to playing the violin and viola.

He played with orchestras in Austin and Bemidji MN, and Sebring, FL. He acquired a valuable collection of stringed instruments. Three of note were a Stradivarius violin (The Lark), a Goffriller cello, and a Guarneri viola. Most of the instruments in his collection were loaned out to various young musicians, who considered playing these instruments critical to the development of their careers.

Space does not allow us to list all the unique aspects and qualities that made

Walter the person we loved. As soon as we felt like we knew him and all his many facets he would come up with something new and remarkable based on his near photographic memory. Most conversations with him ended with us shaking our heads in wonderment. We are blessed to have been able to call him our father and that he shared his scientific achievements with the world.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held in Minneapolis when it is safe to do so. His cremains will be interred at Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights, MN. The family requests that donations be made to a local classical music organization or the classical music department of a college or university in Walter’s name.

Several caretakers provided skilled and loving care to Jackie and Walter over the years in both Minnesota and Florida. They include Rick, Dawn, Sonja, and Katelyn in Bemidji, and Jean, Marilyn, Judy, and Justo in Florida.

Finally, as Walter was clearly a science believer and unfortunately a victim of the insidious and deadly COVID-19 virus, his family implores everyone to honor Walter’s memory by masking up, distancing, and hand washing - the lives of others are depending on you!

ack in 2017, I drove to the home of a local high school football player for an interview.

It was June — my first time experiencing the dead athletics period that is the summer here in Florida — so there were no official practices happening. I didn’t know much about this kid; I had watched him play a few times at Riverview High the previous fall, but I was still new to the area and was still getting a feel for the region’s top players, so he wasn’t on my radar at the time.

I had reached out to him via Twitter for the interview after seeing him pick up a few Division I offers and wanted to feature him as an Athlete of the Week.

To be honest, I wasn’t all that excited about the interview. It was at the end of the week, and I really just wanted to be done with it.

myself. It was enough to get me out of the car and knocking on his door.

Three years and change later, I can say Jamar Johnson certainly made it worth the effort.

Johnson declared for the NFL draft Monday after three seasons at Indiana University. Johnson, who played safety for Indiana, finished the 2020 season with 43 total tackles (33 solo) and four interceptions, tied for the team lead. He also had four pass

breakups, a sack and a forced fumble, making him one of the Hoosiers’ best defensive playmakers in recent years. He was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team for his efforts, as voted by the league’s coaches. (He made the First Team as voted by the media, for what that’s worth.)

I can’t say for sure when the 6-foot-1, 197-pound Johnson — or Pocket Rocket, as he is known by Hoosier fans — will be drafted; weird things happen all the time. My best guess, though, would be on the second day, sometime in the second or third round. Johnson has the stats, and I think he’ll impress at the NFL Combine in March (if there is one in 2021) or at Indiana’s pro day workout.

It has been a blast watching him improve his vision of the field and his reaction time.

Watching him pick off likely top-five selection Justin Fields of Ohio State this season was a surreal moment. His strong play was no small part of Indiana’s 6-2 season, one that saw the Hoosiers climb to No. 11.

His announcement got me thinking. Back in that 2017 interview, Johnson said some interesting things. He didn’t have Indiana in his top schools, for instance.

He thought his best skill was getting to the ball every play, one way or another. (I’d say that’s accurate.) He also said the following when asked to finish the sentence “Jamar Johnson is …”: “Going to be on top soon.

That’s what I’m working for.

I’m going to college to be on top. To go to the NFL, that’s my dream. To make sure my family is straight.”

Let Johnson’s story be a lesson to all athletes in this area. The NFL draft is scheduled to begin April 29. In a little more than three months, Johnson will see his dream realized. That’s pretty darn cool — and if he can do it, so can you.

New volleyball coach has championship credentials Davis brings experience, familiarity to Cardinal Mooney’s program.

Their coach might be leaving, but Cardinal Mooney volleyball players have no worries about staying one of the state’s elite programs.

On Friday, the Cougars announced Chad Davis would be the school’s next volleyball coach, taking over for Chad Sutton, who stepped down to pursue a volunteer position with Purdue University.

Davis was the program’s assistant the past two seasons, but he is no ordinary internal hire. Before coming to Mooney, Davis was an assistant coach at Quinnipiac University and coached at P.K. Yonge High in Gainesville.

Davis led P.K. Yonge to an 89-5 record in three seasons, including two state championships and a top five national ranking by MaxPreps and PrepVolleyball in 2015.

“There’s a high level of expectations here,” Davis said. “The good news is I currently coach a lot of the returnees in club volleyball [with Siesta Key Juniors].

I have personal experiences with winning state championships, so that’s the goal. That’s what the mindset of the program will be.”

In a release, the school also named Terah Guengerich its softball coach and Danielle Torres its athletic trainer.

Guengerich is a graduate of Riverview High who played softball at the University of Miami. She has been a coach with Miss Sarasota Softball for five years.

Torres has seven years of athletic training experience throughout her clinical education and professional career, covering athletics at high schools and at the NAIA and Division I collegiate levels. She joins Mooney through the school’s partnership with Coastal Orthopedics.

things, he said, he plans some tactical changes — though he is mum on the specifics — as well as some changes in how the team conducts practice.

In his mind, he said, he’s already planning the team’s fall schedule.

“We want to hit the ground running,” Davis said.

Davis will also oversee the school’s beach volleyball program, which will begin in the spring. Davis said one of his goals is to expand the beach

program, making it even more of an emphasis than it has been the past few seasons.

Davis said he sees it as an advantage the program has over other schools, for participating in beach volleyball helps indoor players with their shot making, ball control and defensive skills.

Davis inherits a roster full of talent.

The Cougars went 19-9 in 2020 despite losing key players from its Class 3A state championship in 2019. That includes

Jordyn Byrd, a sophomore who had 315 kills last season, and Lola Buck-Taylor, a freshman libero who led the team with 386 digs.

“I’m looking forward to building something long-term here,” Davis said.

“We’re going to put together a great staff. The kids come first, and we’re going to teach them as a collective. We want to continue the great success we’ve had and hopefully take it up another notch.”

When did you start playing soccer?

I started when I was 3. My family just put me into it. They wanted to see if I liked sports. A lot of kids stopped playing, but I stuck with it.

What is the appeal to you?

There’s a few different aspects to it. I like the competitiveness and having to work as a team. You have to keep a positive mindset and be an all-around good person as a teammate. And you get to meet a lot of people, too.

What is your favorite subject?

I like math. You have to problemsolve, and finding my way around a problem is something I’m good at. It’s my main subject.

What are your hobbies?

I like to fish. Whenever my family can, we go skiing or hiking.

PANDEMIC PLANNING Regardless of the solution event planners come up with in 2021, their events will likely look and feel a bit different.

vent planning can be complicated. Between picking a site, finding a date and deciding on a guest list, menu and entertainment, it’s a lot to consider, often months in advance.

The COVID-19 pandemic has only made things more complicated, especially now as vaccines begin rolling out and offer some level of hope for normalcy sometime in 2021. But as event planners have found, we’re not there yet.

SUNCOAST CHARITIES FOR CHILDREN

Suncoast Charities for Children organizes the Thunder by The Bay motorcycle festival each year, and the plan is to continue that tradition in 2021.

Executive Director Lucy Nicandri said her organization is pressing forward with the endeavor the weekend of Feb. 19 to raise money to support children and adults with special needs.

They’ve kept afloat with smaller events this year following the

cancellation of summer offshore powerboat races. In Nicandri’s eyes, it’s better to host small events to bring in some money than not.

“There’s a lot of outdoor events that are happening rather than just ‘Let’s put the brakes on everything’.”

As that was happening, though, Nicandri kept her eye on February 2021 for Thunder by the Bay and its Born to Be Wild kickoff party.

She made the decision to host the event with social distancing measures in place and was heartened when sponsors supported her.

“I was being optimistic because you had to be,” Nicandri said.

“Once I knew that those sponsors would support us, … that was a major, major thing.”

The organization’s 2020 event took place in February, just missing the beginning of pandemicrelated shutdowns. Many of the group’s subsequent events were delayed or converted to a virtual format, which has brought its share of challenges.

As the pandemic continued into the fall, Mary Kenealy Events Vice President Janet Allen said her group had to prepare for any format for the 2021 edition — inperson, virtual or a hybrid.

“It’s done all simultaneously since no one really knows what’s going to happen,” Allen said.

She, Kenealy and event staff had planned for a hybrid luncheon Feb. 5 that would have featured some masked guests at a distanced luncheon at The RitzCarlton, Sarasota while listening to keynote speaker Lorna Luft.

Other guests would watch virtually. But when it was clear that COVID-19 cases were still rising, in December Tidewell Foundation staff waved off the live portion, opting for fully virtual, still with Luft delivering her address — from her home.

“We hope for the best but prepare for the worst, as the saying goes,” Allen said.

The pandemic brought the group’s operations to a halt, and staff rescheduled for October.

“We thought ‘Oh, yeah, October no problem,’” Executive Director Megan Micale said. “And then, boy, were we wrong.”

Micale assumed the organization’s top position over the summer, when the decision had already been made to move the event again to February 2021 as it became clear COVID-19 had no signs of stopping.

That date, too, felt less likely throughout the fall. The organization had support from sponsors and donors but detected hesitation among patrons. After months of planning, delaying and hoping, Micale and the executive board decided again to put the gala on hold.

There is no replacement date for the event, though Micale hopes for some time this year.

Micale said she’s been heartened by the first few weeks of vaccine distribution.

“At this point, I also want to have an event where we can invite everyone, and everyone can come be like, ‘Wow, we did it’,” Micale said. “‘We got through a pandemic, we’re having our gala, and we’re raising money for the community.’”

DESIGNING DAUGHTERS

Staff and volunteers had worked on their April 2020 gala — A Night in Paris — since fall 2019. Costumes had been prepared, sponsors were ready, and there were hopes it would be the best and most profitable function yet.

I

f your life wasn’t interrupted by the pandemic, you’re probably not totally truthful. Last year brought all sorts of new schedules and practices, and several of our usual hobbies and activities were changed or outright canceled.

Sarasota locals had to find new ways to occupy their time. Here are a few.

Maike Foster has found peace working on her edible garden for much of 2020.

If Maike Foster wasn’t going stir-crazy working from home at the start of the pandemic, she was close.

Foster, a wealth management associate with Merrill Lynch, missed the rhythm of an office and meeting with friends.

But she found solace in a backyard planting bed her husband installed as a wedding present.

Since then, Foster has cultivated fruit, vegetables and herbs she and her family can enjoy.

“I look around, and I see so many things that I’ve created or grown, and it absolutely has changed me,” Foster said.

What started as a garden bed with three varieties of roses blossomed into 11 rose varieties, lettuce, bananas, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and more. The flowers she has grown now adorn her home.

In keeping with the solitary nature of the pandemic, Foster gathered much of her knowledge by exploring websites and YouTube videos. She’s enjoyed learning the sheer number of sage and lavender species that can be found or the best ways to grow squash without an invasion of bugs. She’s looking into growing more exotic items and is trying to persuade her husband to plant a fig tree in the backyard.

As it stands, Foster said she feels that she’s acquired a large amount of botanical knowledge in 2020 and plans to start sharing that knowledge somehow with others in 20201.

ALEX TEICHEIRA A freelance actor who often performed with Florida Studio Theatre, Alex Teicheira was a few days away from performing in a Gainesville production when everything shut down. With freelance work drying up, he had lots of time and little to do.

Already a runner and coach, he added organizer to his list of athletic endeavours by launching the Run SRQ running group. He and his members meet every Sunday to run across Sarasota.

“Sunday has become a ritual for us,” Teicheira said. “It’s become such a respite from the work week and all the stress of what’s going on.”

The group started with just Teicheira, Meg Gilbert and two others. Another couple were interested in joining, and four became six. Soon, Teicheira’s Run SRQ group had reached 14 members.

He’s reluctant to have his group’s number go higher.

The whole point was to provide camaraderie in a pandemicappropriate way with members. Having too large of a group, in Teicheira’s eyes, defeats the purpose.

He makes it a priority to map out running routes across Sarasota to show his members areas with which they are not familiar.

That has included neighborhoods in Newtown, Bayou Oaks, parts of Lido Key and more. He said he feels that in a pandemic time where people are more isolated than ever, finding a way to get outside and see their community in a new light is beneficial.

“I’ve always been about getting to a new place and learning about it by taking a run,” he said. “I’d do a ‘Hansel and Gretel’-style breadcrumbs run where I’d just run in a direction, turn around and come back. That’s how I’d learn about any city I’ve lived in.”

Sarasota resident Gabriela Berríos and her fiance have kept to quarantine rules and stayed home the best they can, month in and month out. That kind of monotony can tire a person out, though, and Berríos said she needed something to make the year easier.

She discovered a kind of excitement and joy through creating digital art. Her designs have been sold and printed on T-shirts, coffee mugs, posters and many other types media.

It’s been a soothing, exciting experience for the digital artist.

In many ways, she said, making art has saved her during the pandemic.

“I’m satisfied and happy when other people are happy because of something that I’ve done,” Berríos said. “That’s kind of what my focus has been with my art.”

Beyond her digital creations, Berríos was approached by clients in recent months with a slightly different request — they wanted her to construct wooden boxes to store their dice when playing Dungeons and Dragons games.

Berríos had never constructed a physical product like a wooden box before and said she doesn’t always know what she’s getting into when she starts something.

But that never stops her from trying, and she quickly set about learning how to construct special boxes for her new clients.

“Everything I do is very spontaneous,” she said. “I start playing with it, and if it works, it works, and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”

She said she spent a month ordering different plans and assembling them, trying to get the right fit. It was a different pace than her digital art, where if she made a mistake, it could be erased. With a tangible product like wood, she would have to wait for the glue to dry before she could go back and fix something.

When the box was actually constructed, she etched designs for each box — tailored to clients’ individual characters — using a laser cutter. When the product was good and finished, she said she felt proud of her work and excited for her clients to enjoy it.

“It brings me a lot of joy to make art; it’s always my happy place,” Berríos said. “It’s been great for me in the pandemic.”

Nonprofits, students create diversity coloring book The book features pages with different ethnicities, abilities, family structures and more.

F

ew smells stir up nostalgia as quickly as a box of crayons. But for some, a box of crayons stirs up emotions.

Until Crayola released its “Colors of the World” collection in 1992, many children would reach into a box only to discover there was no color to match their skin tone, not to mention a coloring page that represented their ethnicity or family structure.

However, a coloring book — titled “Finding Joy in our Differences” created by local organizations and Ringling College of Art and Design students — is hoping to change that narrative.

Sheila Birnbaum, a volunteer project manager for JFCS of the

Suncoast, has helped facilitate community projects since 2015.

She said that because diversity has become a pressing issue in the U.S., she knew she needed to do something, and she got the idea to create a children’s coloring book to teach lessons in a way that is easy to understand.

“Just learning about diversity is important because children need to learn about and respect all people, so they understand that everyone has differences, but we’re all alike,” Birnbaum said.

“By teaching children to respect differences, it’s a beginning in the prevention of aggression and violent behavior.”

Karen Pharo, JFCS’s director of community outreach, said the project was perfect for the mission of JFCS.

“Not only are we working to eradicate illiteracy, [but also] we can now help in the fight against hate and prejudice within our local community and start it at a young age,” Pharo said.

The Andrew Monroe 5K is in memory of Monroe’s son. An avid soccer player, Andrew died in a car crash in 2011. Stacey Monroe established the race in 2014, and all proceeds go toward a scholarship fund for senior soccer players at Riverview High School, track and JROTC members.

After the race, runners grabbed muffins and waited to hear the official results.

he Andrew Monroe 5K ran for the eighth year on the morning of Jan. 6 on Siesta Beach for one of the first local live races since the COVID-19 pandemic started.

Starter Dan Pollock warmed up the chilly morning with goodnatured yells as the runners headed out on the beach.

“We’re following county guidelines,” he reminded. “So stay away from me!”

Of course, COVID-19 necessitated some changes to the race.

Organizer Stacey Monroe had to draft a COVID-19 plan, including strategies of social distancing and mask-wearing. This 5K was the big welcome back to Sarasota County racing and opened the Manasota Track Series of races, and 335 runners showed up in total compared to last year’s 385.

“It’s good for COVID-19 times,” Monroe said.

Much of the field was made up of returning runners taking to the hard-packed sand of Siesta Beach. The top male finisher, 20-year-old Connor Wozniak, covered 3.1 miles in 18:03.3, while

t’s an unprecedented moment in American history, coming off a year of plague, social unrest and conversations about race.

For some, it’s the first time they’ve faced these issues.

Not so for writer and multimedia artist John Sims.

“I’ve been working on this consistently,” Sims said. “I appreciate the privilege to be able to have the space to be as focused and critical and talk about things that everyday people don’t have time for. … I embrace that challenge.”

Sims, a Ringling artist in residence and the former coordinator of mathematics at the Ringling College of Art and Design, has been engaged in artistic expression and political activism since his time at Antioch

College in Ohio. He established the Cross Cultural Field Program, which taught students about Black culture in the South, and the African American Cultural Week, which had 26 programs focusing on the Black experience at the school.

He hasn’t limited himself to one medium. Sims works in a number of outlets, most notably his yearslong “Recoloration Proclamation” multimedia project that looks at identity in the context of Confederate iconography and Black culture. He has written op-eds for CNN, Al Jazeera and HuffPost. Beyond that, he has constructed a KoronaKilla video game that takes a look at the COVID-19 pandemic and a “Dear Police” audio piece.

His body of work will be available to audiences in a new way

during the “2020: (Di)Visions of America” art performance, a livestreamed presentation Jan. 18 at the Historic Asolo Theater.

Although not wanting to give too much away about the presentation, Sims said the piece is something of a video essay that looks at issues in American culture, tackling white supremacy, Confederate iconography, policing and COVID-19.

“This is shaped by real contemporary events and things we’re thinking about on a daily level,” Sims said. “This is a very intentional response. It just so happened that some of these issues I’ve been working on before 2020. So it provides me to be prepared to engage this on a deeper level.”

Sims will be present in the theater, putting on a livestreamed presentation for a Ringling audience. Following the Jan. 18 debut, a recorded broadcast will be available for people to watch Jan. 23 and 30 and Feb. 1.

Sims worked on the performance throughout the fall and has found that taking his multimedia work and collecting it into a visual essay has been interesting. He is approaching the project as a writer, where individual parts mix and interact with other segments.

Let the music play!

Despite the pandemic, area music groups won’t be silenced.

he pandemic was a sucker punch to the arts community. It was a particularly vicious blow to music groups. Audiences and ensembles were both at risk when they gathered. Singing itself was a danger because vocalists project aerosolized particles. Performance aside, the national infrastructure of flights, hotels and auditoriums that connected musicians to audiences was compromised. There was no magic solution. But our area’s music community improvised, adapted and adjusted with countless little solutions. Here are some of the ways they’re keeping the music alive this season.

To manage the pandemic, the Sarasota Opera kept it’s theater capacity at a minimum and offered virtual events.

Richard Russell is Sarasota Opera’s executive director. Opera literally means “the works.” This art form is packed with moving parts, and in a pandemic, it’s tough to keep it going. Somehow, he did. “Obviously, doing a full opera production with a full audience is impossible,” he says.

“Under pandemic conditions, it would be financially ruinous, and there’d be no way to keep the artists safe. To offer some winter opera productions, we found four shorter, small-cast, one-act pieces that we could do with reasonable health precautions.

We housed all of the artists in our complex to keep them safe in the same bubble.

“We also split our season in two, so lots of people wouldn’t be rehearsing or performing at the same time. Our theater is socially distanced, seating only 273 people, which is 20% of capacity. We also offer streaming content for people who don’t feel comfortable coming to the opera house.

That’s our way of maintaining a connection with our audience — and providing content to as many people as we could. We couldn’t be silent.”
