Fleeting beauty

The Queen of the Night flower blooms only once a year, but when they received notice from Selby Gardens, the Medina family jumped on the opportunity to witness it that night. Dan Medina (above), his wife, Kim Medina, and daughter, Elizabeth Medina (above), 8, were among the many who set up lawn chairs to watch the blooms slowly open, walking around them to admire and photograph them. The free event took place at the live oak in front of Selby Gardens’ botany building, on which the flower is located, and featured food by the Michael’s On East Food Truck. The flower belongs to selenicereus, a genus of cactus found in Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America.
