Peaceful garden
Filling in funny
People visit Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center to speak with advocates, to understand their options when experiencing domestic violence and to heal from pain. Visitors to the Main Street location will now see a new sight to make the experience easier: a Zen garden full of vibrant colors, running water and a variety of plants to encourage peace and tranquility. SPARCC recently partnered with the Manasota chapter of the Florida Nursery Growers and Landscape Association to install the outdoor space Sept. 18.

Hurricane helpers
Tourists flock to the Siesta Key Oyster Bar and often leave dollar bills hanging from the ceiling and walls. In 2019, the bills were harvested to support victims of Hurricane Dorian. It’s happening again, this time for victims of Hurricane Ida. It takes longer than you’d think. SKOB Manager Samantha Lemmer said staff members staple the bills to the ceiling with a staple gun and have now to remove them by hand — but the end result is worth it. The restaurant recently donated around $8,000 to the Red Cross to support victims of the storm, with more money still to be collected.
