Art, with a message

If you’ve seen art projects and displays at Sarasota and Manatee county schools lately, there’s a reason for it. Twenty-five teachers recently completed a yearlong education initiative with the Embracing Our Differences nonprofit in an effort to promote diversity and inclusion. In one example, Sarasota Middle School art teacher Brooks Tracey provided 80 students and faculty members at his school with wood panels to create an artistic design representing an Embracing Our Differences quote. They are now on display at the school.

One last performance

The Pine View School band had to put its live performances on pause because of the pandemic, but its students were thrilled to end the year with a show May 25. Twenty-four graduating seniors were recognized for their commitment to the band program. Meagan Michalik and Noah Kunkel of the wind ensemble received the John Philip Sousa Award for achievement and interest in instrumental music. Nicholas Butakow and Caleb McCue of the jazz band received the Louis Armstrong award for excelling in jazz.

The hike, led by U.S. Rep. Greg Steube, covered 5K from J.D. Hamel Park over the John Ringling Bridge to Bird Key and back on Saturday.
