Extra volunteers from Audubon Florida were on the beaches to inform visitors to avoid the nesting area.

Audubon Florida Bird Stewardship Coordinator Holley Short says the chick is a week-and-a-half old.

“When you have this chick and birds nesting, and people are able to see it with their own eyes, they become invested in these birds,”said Short.

In the span of the threeday Memorial Day weekend, volunteers spent more than 60 hours talking to an estimated 300 people about the snowy plovers.

“We knew that it was going to be so busy, we wanted to make sure the chick had a safe space in case the beach got too crowded,” Short said.

More chicks are expected to hatch soon. Visitors should avoid roped off areas.

As hurricane season begins, officials have an oft-repeated summer reminder for residents: Be prepared.

Here are steps you can take to prepare for a major storm, according to Sarasota County Administrator Tom Harmer: n Register for the county’s free new opt-in- only weather warning feature to its CodeRed system to receive automatic notification of tornadoes, flash floods, severe thunderstorms and other weather warnings just minutes after a National Weather Service alert. Visit scgov. net, and click on the CodeRED banner. n Visit scgov.net, and click on “Evacuation Zones” to determine what hurricane zone in which you reside. It’s essential information, because county emergency management officials issue evacuation orders by zone. n Prepare to be without food, water or power for up to 72 hours in case of a major storm.

n agreement between Westfield Southgate Mall, Benderson Development Co. and Dillard’s will allow Westfield to purchase a key piece of the Southgate property from Benderson by 2017 and bring in new anchor tenants.

It also ends a nearly two-year lawsuit in which the Sydney, Australia-based Westfield accused Dillard’s and Benderson — which also owns rival Mall at University Town Center — of conspiring to damage the Southgate mall.

The three companies settled the suit May 27, according to court documents. They also stipulate the suit cannot be refiled.

Full terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

Benderson Director of Development Todd Mathes said his firm has already lined up one new tenant for former Dillard’s space it owns at Southgate: An L.A. Fitness will occupy just less than half of the 96,000-square-foot space and is scheduled to open in spring 2017. The firm has applied for a $60,000 building permit for interior renovations, according to city records.

Westfield will still redevelop and rebrand the mall as Westfield Siesta Key, according to an agreement Benderson and Westfield signed May 26, but its plan is less ambitious than the 243,000 square feet of new retail space and 1,200-space parking garage it originally proposed in 2007 — in which the participation of Dillard’s was key.

“We are working on the remainder of the space,” Mathes wrote in an email to the Sarasota Observer, though he declined to comment on the litigation.

Westfield Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications Katy Dickey declined to comment on the litigation, citing company policy. Although she had no updates on the mall’s timeline for redevelopment, announce-

Legal counsel for Dillard’s, Carlton Fields attorney Steven C. Dupré, did not respond to phone calls seeking comment Tuesday and Wednesday.

LITIGATION HISTORY

In 1992, Dillard’s signed an operating agreement with Westfield that included a stipulation that required it to remain a “first-class department store,” Westfield’s suit alleges.

From 2007 to 2012, the two parties worked in concert to plan a redevelopment that included adding a second story to Dillard’s, a pedestrian walkway to the department store from a parking garage and a roundabout at Siesta Drive near the east side of the mall, according to development applications filed with the city.

However, Westfield alleges Dillard’s stopped responding to inquiries about the redevelopment plan beginning in 2013.

The suit states that Dillard’s and Benderson likely started collaborating some time around 2011, as the department store planned to open in the Mall at UTC. In April 2014, Dillard’s Vice President Chris Johnson sent an email to Sarasota Senior Planner Courtney Mendez rebuking its endorsement of four development applications for the project.

Wrote Westfield’s lawyer, Christopher Torres, in the initial complaint:

“It is clear now that Dillard’s drawn out dealings regarding the expansion were a pretext to mislead Southgate so that (Dillard’s) could complete its plan to relocate to UTC. UTC will be a direct competitor of Southgate and, therefore, (Dillard’s) and Benderson did not — and still do not — want Southgate to be able to complete the expansion, despite Dillard’s longstanding support.”

Benderson purchased the Dillard’s property at Southgate for $10 million in October 2014, according to property records; Dillard’s opened in the Mall at UTC that same month.

The suit claims the chain planned to operate a clearance store or leave the anchor space vacant, a violation of the 1992 agreement.

Dillard’s closed its Westfield location Dec. 29, 2014, and the store cleared out its inventory.

“The building has been vacant and dark ever since,” Torres wrote in a third amended complaint filed Sept. 4, 2015.

In December 2015, 12th Judicial Circuit Court Magistrate Deborah Bailey recommended dismissal of six of the eight claims against Benderson and Dillard’s but left open allegations of breach of contract and breach of covenant of good faith and fair dealing.

A NEW AGREEMENT

An operating agreement filed with the Sarasota Clerk of the

Court states that Benderson, which owns the former Dillard’s building under subsidiary Siesta Retail LLC, must have certain tenants in place before Westfield will be allowed to buy the anchor building from Benderson in 2017.

Specifically, L.A. Fitness has to be open by next summer.

Benderson must also sign a lease with Clive Daniel Homes, a luxury home furnishing and design store, or a substitute “reasonably compatible” tenant. Further, the tenants’ combined footprint in the space must exceed 70,000 square feet.

If Westfield were to move forward with a larger-scale redevelopment, it would need to accommodate increased parking demands, said Gretchen Schneider, general manager of Sarasota’s planning and development department, in a previous interview with the Sarasota Observer.

“Once they hit a certain threshold of that new development, they would have to build a parking deck,” Schneider said.

The developer spent nearly $3 million on interior renovations in 2014. And while the center has lost some high-profile tenants, including Coach and Starbucks, it has attracted a new CinéBistro.

Another new tenant includes CycleBar, which is working on a $90,000 buildout for the indoor cycling franchise.

February 2012 — Westfield revises the easement and operating agreement to remove any timing restriction for the expansion, so Dillard’s could expand regardless of the redevelopment.

March 2013 — Westfield provides updated site plan.

Dillard’s allegedly doesn’t respond.

2013 — Westfield invests $8 million in interior renovations of the mall.

April 21, 2014 — Dillard’s Vice President Chris Johnson sent an email to Sarasota planner Courtney Mendez revoking its consent of owner as a party to four development applications for Southgate.

The Robert L. Taylor center, located at 1845 34th St., opened in 2011 following a $12 million construction effort. Staff quickly came to see the 13-acre complex as a highlight of the city’s parks portfolio, providing opportunities for structured programming such as camps, fitness classes and sports leagues.

Barwin has called the Robert L. Taylor center a model for the city to emulate as a group of residents pushes for increased investment in parks. In April, crews broke ground on $2 million artificial turf athletic field at the complex.

In March, the city hired Robert L. Taylor Manager Jerry Fogle to fill the new position of parks and recreation director.

Despite the city’s enthusiasm, the county has not wavered from its plan to withdraw funding for the facility. That plan dates back to 2011, when the city and county entered an interlocal agreement that left the city solely responsi-

At the time, the city asked to add the facility to a list of regional parks within city limits the county agreed to continue funding. That effort was unsuccessful, but Barwin said the two boards agreed to revisit the conversation after the Robert L. Taylor center had five years to operate.

Barwin believes the data speaks for itself: According to information the city provided, nearly 60% of the visitors to the Robert L. Taylor center during the past five years come from outside of the city limits. About 54% of those visitors come from Sarasota County. As a result, Barwin requested $984,600 in county funding for the facility — or 60% of the projected operating budget.

During the May 2 City Commission meeting, Deputy City Manager Marlon Brown informed the board that the county had denied a grant application from the city to help pay for the athletic field project. He also provided an update on discussions with county staff that suggested a sizable gap between the two govBEEexists RIDGE RD. ernments on the issue of funding the Robert L. Taylor center.

According to Brown, county staff believes a regional park is one that draws users from a broader geographical area than just outside the city limits. He cited Nathan Benderson Park and Twin Lakes Park as facilities that fit this description, suggesting the county’s criteria has shifted since the 2011 interlocal agreement.

Sarasota County officials did not respond to a request for comment regarding the future of the Robert L. Taylor center funding.

City staff said there has been no definitive answer from the county since Barwin submitted his letter to Harmer.

Fogle said the complex’s growing budget — projected to top $1.6 million next year — has enabled staff to expand the facility’s programming offerings based on the demands of the community. Despite the uncertainty, he remains hopeful the county will recommit to financial support for the recreational center.

“It definitely assists us with the programming and overall functionality of the complex,” Fogle said. “It’s absolutely critical to what we do here.”

In April, Alta Vista residents took note of something strange in the parking lot of the nearby Ringling Shopping Center: cars.

Largely dormant since a failed effort to add a Walmart in 2013, a portion of the Ringling Shopping Center land now serves as a storage facility for vehicles from the Sarasota Ford dealership. A fleet of dozens of cars sits in the southeast corner of the property, fenced off from the rest of the commercial site.

This unusual flurry of activity generated some concerns from Alta Vista residents. The neighborhood has long been upset at the fence around the property, erected after the city denied Walmart’s plans, sparking a lengthy legal battle. Now, the residents wanted to know: Was the car storage an allowed use for the property? Was the new fence permitted, too?

More pertinently, was it any clearer what the property owners had in mind for the future of the Ringling Shopping Center?

On May 24, City Attorney Robert Fournier answered those questions in response to a letter from the Alta Vista Neighborhood Association. Vehicle storage was allowed under the current zoning, and city staff authorized the fencing, he said. However, the answer to third question is still

In October, the city and the property owners struck an agreement to potentially settle an ongoing lawsuit. The deal gave the owners three options for the land: renovate the building under the existing zoning, redevelop the property under the existing zoning or redevelop the property under the city’s preferred “new urbanist” principles.

The property owners, led by Louis Doyle, have until October to inform the city of the new plans for the center. Doyle did not return calls for comment.

Based on recent discussions with the owners’ attorney, Fournier said he was confident “substantial efforts at redevelopment were underway.”

“I feel quite certain that the car storage and the fence is only temporary, because the property owners really did want the property redeveloped or leased out,” Fournier said.

Until more details are divulged, residents will have to make peace with the car storage and new fencing. According to Alta Vista Neighborhood Association President Larry Silvermintz, the neighborhood is eager to see a long-term plan for the property.

“We want to revive some of the economic activity and give people another reason to live here,” Silvermintz said. “Once you’re in your home, you have to be able to go to something from your home.”

City refines public art proposal process An increase in public works projects has the city searching for sculptors and painters. How do officials find the creative minds behind civic artwork?

The State Street garage first opened to the public last July, and the city held a formal ribbon cutting ceremony for the parking structure in February.

Still, the garage isn’t entirely complete. On May 11, Parking Manager Mark Lyons appeared before the city’s Public Art Committee and spoke about the next phase of work on the facility: the addition of public artwork.

Together, the group is searching for artists interested in undertaking the effort of adorning the lobby, stairwells and other concrete surfaces in the building. The project, which comes with a budget up to $100,000 split among as many as five artists, is intended to provide a practical benefit in addition to enhanced aesthetics.

“The idea is that the thematic process would provide a wayfinding concept,” Lyons said.

The Public Art Committee agendas have begun to grow in the past two years. An increase in development has led to an increase in public art projects.

Builders of projects exceeding $250,000 in value are required to contribute to the city’s public art fund or provide their own artwork for the public realm.

“I do believe with all the building that’s going on in the com-

munity and in Florida, obviously, there will be more and more opportunities for art,” said Jim Shirley, executive director of the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County. “One of our goals is, we really want to be sure that not only are we building buildings, but that we’re using the arts to beautify the community.”

At the same time, the city is taking on many of its own projects that will eventually double as an exhibition for public artwork.

Most notably, the city is embarking on a series of roundabouts, and the Public Art Committee is working to place sculptures in the center of the traffic features.

In April, the city installed the first piece of art in that series at Main Street and Orange Avenue. The 20-foot sculpture was designed by an artist from Tuscon, Ariz. — which inspired criticism from some residents who believe the city should have selected a local artist.

Already, a second national call for artists has gone out for a roundabout at Orange and Ringling Boulevard. At its May meeting, members of the Public Art Committee discussed whether future invitations for proposals should be limited to a narrower, local field of artists.

ists, and the national invitation has been partially attributable to legal uncertainty. City staff indicated there is no legal issue with seeking public artwork from a narrowly defined geographic area.

David Smith, the city’s integration general manager, explained the process behind the search for artists. In addition to announcing the project on email lists and social media, the city uses the website CallforEntry.org to solicit

Smith and other city officials have stood behind the national call for artists. He believes that, even with competition from across the country, the selection process still gives Sarasota artists an edge.

“I think the local artists really have an advantage in that they know the community, and they’re known in the community,” Smith said. “They can go to the site, look around and generate ideas.”

Virginia Hoffman, a local artist who formerly served on the Public Art Committee, said the city’s public art search process could benefit from some changes, such as more lead time for artists to submit proposals.

Artists had a little more than a month to submit proposals for the Orange and Ringling roundabout.

Already, the committee has moved to strike a provision from the roundabout call for artists seeking people with experience designing public art. The board suggested it is flexible to other changes as new ideas surface.

The committee also agreed to search from a smaller geographic area for the State Street garage artwork, scheduled for installation in late 2017. Hoffman said a narrower focus would lead to a more meaningful product.

“There are artists out there nationwide that have all their little precanned ideas,” Hoffman said. “You don’t want things that come out of somebody’s closet — you want something that is designed specifically for you.”

What’s the plan?

Year-round Sarasotans enjoy the pace of summer. But although it is more relaxed, you still hear residents asking: What’ s the grand plan to head off the coming traffic crisis?

Summer is settling in, and the pace is slowing. Traffic counts are noticeably down. You can get where you want to go without road rage.

Even so, the year-round residents are still talking. You still hear it at every gathering: “They better do something about all of this growth.”

Sarasota Mayor Willie Shaw said the same thing when he was sworn in last week to his third consecutive term as the city’s ceremonial mayor.

“Growth … has to be addressed.”

“All of this growth.” The tone you hear makes it seem like the city is exploding with uncontrolled growth.

Yes, the number of construction sites and cranes around the downtown core are extraordinary by historical measures of the past 20 years.

But the number of cranes also can be countered to an extent with numerical facts. Between 2010 and 2015, the city of Sarasota grew at about half the number of people and half the rate as, say, Bradenton and North Port: n Bradenton: +5,091, +10.3% n North Port: +4,941, +8.6% n Sarasota: +2,966, +5.6% For Sarasota, that’s roughly 593 new residents a year in the city limits.

Hardly runaway growth.

Those numbers, of course, are

looking in the rearview mirror. The concern is what is to come.

From our perspective, this growth is welcome. It reminds us of the conclusion Adam Smith made in the late 1700s: “The most decisive of the prosperity of any country is the increase of the number of its inhabitants.”

Many Sarasotans, of course, cringe and wince at the thought of Sarasota becoming more populous. But guess what? The long-term trends (the next 10 years) are undeniable and unstoppable: n Florida will continue to attract more people, largely retiring baby boomers. n Sarasota will continue attracting its share, likely an increasing proportion of its share. Sorry, folks, but the word is spreading. n And more people — in particular the millennials through Generation X (20s to 40) — are desiring urban living. (The Rosemary District, after many years of predictions, is emblematic of this.)

Add it altogether, and these trends should be sending a cherry-bomblike message to the city’s governmental leaders: City residents are waiting anxiously for the grand strategy and

Overtime update Last week, we reported two bills are pending in Congress that, if approved, would nullify President Obama’s new overtime rules, which are scheduled to go into effect in January.

The new rules, you recall, would require all employers to pay overtime to all employees who earn less than $47,476 a year — even if they are managerial employees. Today, the threshold is about half that.

After our report went to press, we heard from U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan.

His outlook for nullifying the new rules was not cheery. As he told us: Even if the House and Senate passed either of the two bills, “Obama would veto them,” Buchanan said.

“The only way to stop the rules is to elect a Republican president and keep the Republican majority in the Senate and then repeal the rules in the first 90 days of 2017.”

Will Rubio run? Can a tiger change its stripes?

It’s just the kind of story the media love: Will Marco Rubio reverse course and decide to run for re-election?

He has until June 24 to decide — the deadline for filing.

So far, Rubio has said no. He told reporters in Washington last week: “I didn’t think it was fair for me to run for president and freeze that seat in a competitive state. So I made my decision. I don’t have anything new to say from what I said in the past ... I made that decision, and I’ve lived by that decision. Nothing’s changed.”

Except the outside influence is intensifying.

Take U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Politico reported last week: “Mitch McConnell conducted a survey on Sen. Marco Rubio on Thursday. At a GOP caucus lunch, he asked senators whether they’d like to see Rubio run for re-election. Every hand in the room went up.

“And then the Senate majority leader told senators to get to work persuading Rubio to ditch his retirement from the chamber after one term and run again, according to two sources familiar with the matter.”

On Tuesday, McConnell told radio host Hugh Hewitt: “… We’re all hoping that he’ll reconsider, because poll data indicates that he is the one who can win for us. He’s been back in the Senate for six weeks. He’s, I believe, enjoying it, and being effective.

“So I haven’t given up hope,” McConnell said. “He hasn’t said yes yet, but there are an awful lot of us who think

that it would not only be good for him and for Florida, but good for the Senate if he ran again.”

Even the Donald fueled the fire with his Tweet last week. One of those polls, a Mason-Dixon poll conducted almost three months ago when Rubio was still in the presidential race, showed Rubio would handily defeat Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Patrick Murphy, regarded as the Democrats’ favorite.

Here in Florida, though, the urgings to run have been more muted. Worth noting is former Gov. Jeb Bush has not weighed in on Rubio’s behalf. And yet Bush is among top national Republicans who are campaigning nationally to retain a Republican majority in the Senate. Bush’s endorsement of Rubio probably isn’t likely, especially given how their friendship became demonstrably diminished during the presidential campaign.

One of the few prominent Florida Republicans urging Rubio to run again is Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater. He told the Tampa Bay Times: “He is the best person to serve in the United States Senate, and he would be the best candidate to prevail.

Atwater, who has known Rubio for 16 years, serving with him in Legislature, told the Times Rubio was “absolutely genuine” when he announced he would not seek another term. But at the same time, Atwater said Rubio should consider all those urging him to run.

Asked how Rubio changing his mind would be viewed, Atwater said, “No

one would see it as anything other than Marco being genuine from the start.

He would be answering our call.”

Rubio confidantes, meanwhile, say a Rubio candidacy is not going to happen.

Ana Navaro, a Rubio ally told Politico: “There’s no shot in hell Marco runs for his seat again … Marco needs to make money. He has four kids in private school and to put through college in near future. He has no trust fund or nest egg. Marco told me the first week after being elected that he did not want to ‘be a lifer’ in the Senate. I think that’s true. He’s impatient and lives life quickly.”

For now, the Rubio watch will remain a hot media story (we fell for it).

And for good reason. Republicans desperately want to maintain their majority in the U.S. Senate. And as always, Florida is a swing state, with voters swinging over the past few months more in favor of the Democratic Senate candidates of Patrick Murphy and Alan Grayson than the five unknown Republican candidates.

Will Rubio run? If you’ve watched Rubio’s political career from the day he began serving on the West Miami City Commission in 1998, he has pursued — doggedly and determinedly — the next highest office, sharpening his gift of speaking at every step.

Former colleagues in the Legislature find it difficult to believe Rubio will walk away from the only job he has ever pursued — politics and public policy. You can be sure he is conflicted: Stay in the arena he knows best and where he likely can win, or go on the speaking circuit and into the private sector to earn as much money as he can while his name is in demand.

We’ll know the answer no later than June 24. But our bet: Tigers can’t change their stripes.

Easiest, cheapest way is not always best

It’s no surprise how the mainstream media are condemning Republican U.S. Senate candidate Carlos Beruff of Manatee County for calling President Obama an “animal.”

As soon as anyone criticizing Obama, they find no better way to divert the weakness and inept performance of the president than to hide behind the “R” word.

When a person runs for public office, he opens himself to scrutiny and public ridicule, no matter his race, disability, religion, etc.

Certainly, because I walk with crutches, it wouldn’t be proper to use certain terms referring to me, and certain terms are improper for our black president.

Conversely any person, especially a politician, needs to expect that he will be subjected to common slang and terms use by the American public.

As Steve Martin’s character so eloquently portrayed in the movie “Roxanne,” I believe if Beruff had intended to be racist, he would have chosen harsher wording than “animal.”

In your report, “Siesta drives at alternative to Big Pass dredge” on May 12, it sounds like the city is looking toward fiscal responsibility.

This is somewhat refreshing, but puzzling. It’s from the same people who have mishandled the infamous lift station; parking meters; union issues; and the latest traffic issues, etc.

Yet, with one of the the key assets of Sarasota, shouldn’t we be looking in terms of longterm investment? Why take the cheapest solution when: n Siesta Beach is the premier draw for Sarasota County, not Lido Beach? n Messing with Mother Nature — e.g., dredging the pass — will have unknown impact on normal water flow, tides and wildlife of Sarasota Bay? While it is easy to believe the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers knows what it is doing — it has done some marvelous projects — it is also well known that many projects are now being undone because of unintended consequences.

Dredging might be the easiest and cheapest answer. But easiest is not always best. It seems obvious that the issue with Lido is a continuing one. If something needs to be done (?), then make the investment and take sand from offshore dredging or truck hauling that does not risk Siesta Beach or Sarasota Bay. In the end, we all learned growing up: Don’t mess with

Mother Nature. I have learned nothing in adulthood to offset that. Furthermore, based upon continual fiscal mismanagement, can we really trust the city leaders with financial decisions?

Beware of Daus’ future plans for U.S. 41 property If there’s a Phase 1 to a development, beware of Phase 2.

Daus Investments (if a company has the word “investments” in its name you know they’re only in it for the money) has just bought an old two-story motel on Tamiami Trail across from Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Daus says they plan on redeveloping it into a five-story Sheraton, will be keeping the number of rooms at 99, and are waiting on planned code changes from the city after telling the city that “the changes wouldn’t have any impact on traffic.”

What are the odds that there will be a Phase 2 where Daus adds more rooms (and more traffic) because they will already have received the code changes?

Now is the time for the city to look to the future and say “No” to code changes that don’t include future usage.

Essex House residents deserve city protection In the May 26 Sarasota Observer article captioned “Palm Avenue condo files suit protesting Development,” it was stated that three allegations were in the Essex House Condominium Association suit.

With respect to allegation 1 (Echelon has removed property [land] and damages trees belonging to the Essex House) and allegation 3 (Echelon contractors trespassing on their property), one would think that the Essex House Condominium could involve the Sarasota Police Department in a vigorous investigation of alleged thief of property (land) and of alleged trespassing to help document specifics for any lawsuit Why would not the city of Sarasota and Sarasota Police respond to this alleged thief and contractor trespassing by Echelon? The Essex House Condominium and its residents surely pay quite a lot of taxes to the city and surely deserve some sort of protection.

Rabbi Elaine Glickman pens book for parents ‘Your Kid’s a Brat and It’s All Your Fault’ lends advice for parents looking to correct bratty behavior.

We’ve all witnessed the child in the checkout line whose bloodcurdling screams are demanding some incoherent thing.

The parent tries to soothe the child as quickly as possible, all while avoiding glares from strangers judging them.

“It really is an act of courage to step up and love your child enough to be the boss,” said Rabbi Elaine Rose Glickman.

Author and mother of three, Glickman recently published the book “Your Kid’s a Brat and it’s All Your Fault” to help parents recognize their own behaviors that are contributing to their children’s own bratty attitudes. “Your Kid’s a Brat and it’s All Your Fault” is also meant for parents to laugh at themselves and not be discouraged.

“It’s like what we see on Facebook with all the families are happy, and the kids are always smiling,” Glickman said. “It can really take a lot of guts to say ‘No’ to your child.”

Glickman, 45, previously authored six books with topics based in Judaism, including “Sacred Parenting: Jewish Wisdom for Your Family’s Early Years” which was a National Jewish Book Award finalist in 2009.

She’s been a contributor to a parenting column with Mommy magazine on and off for five years.

This is her first book exclusively about parenting in a secular context. The inspiration for the book came after completing the “The Messiah and the Jews,” a comprehensive look of the Jewish belief about the Messiah.

“I really enjoyed it, but it was really heavy,” Glickman said. “I was really absorbed in all of that, and when I finished the book, I said to my husband that I feel like I need a new project that’s a little bit lighter.”

It was her husband, Temple Emanu-El Rabbi Brenner Glickman, who suggested she write a book called “Your Kid’s a Brat and It’s All Your Fault” as a joke.

He suggested it was a good fit because of her experience writing a parenting column.

“I said, ‘I would never write that book,’” Glickman said. “That’s so mean.”

The idea lingered, and Glickman thought the title was a snarky way to name a book about fostering a better relationship with children from “toddlers to tweens.”

The first topic came to mind after dealing with a situation one of her children faced in preschool.

Her son came home from preschool and she noticed teeth marks on his leg. A boy in his class was taking out his frustrations on her son. “All of a sudden, I had five or six of these little essays and had a great time writing them,” Glickman said. “Then I realized these aren’t essays, these are chapters.”

Most of the topics are derived from personal experience, column submissions and experience from friends. A series of chapters with titles such as “Your Child Annoys Strangers,” “Your Kid Talks Like a Sailor” and “Your Child is Addicted to Devices” make up the book. The issue specific chapters serve as a guide for

Glickman suggests some small changes such as teaching your children to incorporate “please” in their requests from the beginning. By teaching “No, thank you,” or “Yes, please,” Glickman notices how much praise her children receive in public because adults are impressed by their manners.

“We’re all worried that we’re making mistakes,” Glickman said.

“Of course we want our kids to be happy, but if we try to make our kids happy all of the time we lose the opportunity to teach them to be good and responsible.”

NAME CALLING 11 a.m. — 1400 block of Bay Point Drive Suspicion: A woman heard loud music outside of her house and walked onto her back lanai. She realized that the noise was coming from a passing boat, which was owned by people she knew. She yelled to say hello to them, at which point three men standing outside of her fence started calling her by her first name. She acknowledged the men and went back inside. While reporting the encounter, she mentioned that approximately a month ago, three juveniles stole a car from her residence. She said she had security video from her lanai and would see if the men could be identified.

ANCHORS AWAY 6:30 p.m. — 0 block of Marina Plaza Suspicion: A boat owner found an unknown man trying to take the anchor off his boat. The owner confronted the man, who told the owner he was told by another person to remove the anchor and replace it. The man attempted to call the person who instructed him to remove the anchor, then left before the owner called the police. Officers were unable to locate a man matching the description given.

WASHED OUT 3 p.m. — 1500 block of Tarpon Avenue Noise Complaint: A woman was trying to study and thought her neighbor was being too loud.

She said her neighbor had been pressure washing his home for three hours, and she felt the volume was unreasonable. An officer checked the area and did not see anybody pressure washing, nor was anybody in the neighbor’s home when he visited the residence.

The officer advised the woman to call again if the problem persisted.

GRAB & BAG 12:47 p.m. — 4100 block of North Tamiami Trail Theft: An employee at a convenience store reported a customer for stealing a can of beer. The customer entered the store, went to the beer cooler and removed the can. The customer then went down the farthest aisle and put the beer inside her backpack before grabbing a soda and going to the register. The employee told the customer that she needed to remove the beer from the bag, at which point the customer left the store without the soda. The employee provided officers with security footage of the incident, but police were unable to locate the customer in the area.

ake Ilardi’s eyes lit up the moment he first set foot inside the Compound Boardshop.

Then 8 years old, he peered around in awe, admiring the skateboards of all shapes and sizes that blanketed an entire wall of the Sarasota store.

After choosing his first real skateboard, Ilardi and his twin brother, Nate, went straight to the skate park and got to work.

The Ollie — a trick in which the rider and board leap into the air simultaneously without the use of the rider’s hands — was the first trick that Ilardi attempted; it’s the move that’s the basis for the majority of tricks.

Eleven years later, Ilardi, 19, has a plethora of tricks in his arsenal, including a 540-degree aerial.

“I don’t really think about it,” Ilardi said. “I just kind of go.

When I was little and trying a new trick, I would break it down and try and put the trick together.”

He earned an invite to his first X Games after winning the final stop of the Boardr Am street skateboarding series May 21, in New York City.

He grew up watching the X Games on TV and then trying to mimic the tricks that his favorite skateboarders, like Ryan Scheckler and Bucky Lasek, did. Now, Ilardi will be one of the competitors aspiring young skateboarders watch on TV. Ilardi, who aspires to turn professional, left for Austin May 29 with Nate, who films videos of all of his brother’s competitions and handles his sponsorships.

“I always thought I would just skate for fun,” Ilardi said. “A hobby turned into this crazy obsession.”

The Ilardis received their first toy skateboards when they were 4. Their grandmother bought one for each of them and told them to sit down and push.

Skateboarding afforded Jake Ilardi an opportunity to have fun while gaining a sense of accomplishment with each new twist.

“You are free to do whatever you want,” he said. “There are no coaches or teams. It’s just you and the board and all of your homies.”

Ilardi was more into skate-

boarding than his brother when the two were younger, but now the two brothers are both devoted to the sport and often will close down the skate park.

Older than Nate by one hour and 10 minutes, Jake Ilardi spends between one and four hours a day at the Payne Skate Park, depending on his Publix work schedule.

He also volunteers every Monday morning, teaching a skateboarding class for home-school children and also is a counselor for 180 Skate, a skateboarding ministry through FirstSarasota, the Downtown Baptist Church.

“He remembers when the older guys were here, and he remembers them giving back to the younger ones,” FirstSarasota youth director Tim Storck said. “Now he’s doing the same thing.”

“A lot of times you’ll see the younger ones stressing about a trick,” Ilardi said. “I just tell them don’t worry about that stuff right now. You’re young. Have fun and enjoy it.”

When it comes to competition, that’s where Jake Ilardi stands alone.

“He has it like a baseball player has pitching,” Nate Ilardi said.

“He’s one of the top kids right now. To me it’s nothing new because I see it every day, but to someone who doesn’t know it’s probably different.”

Sarasota Christian squad brings memories of cheer

The Sarasota Christian Middle School cheerleading squad won a national championship in its first season of competition.

It was an eventful year for the 11 members of the team, who began cheering at the school’s volleyball and basketball games.

Sarasota Christian entered its first competition in January and won the middle school division.

The girls won three more competitions throughout the spring.

The team never received a deduction on its score card, posting perfect routines in each

’m fortunate to hold a lot of different titles: mom, wife, sister, sports editor and Ohio State alum, to name a few.

But nearly 20 years ago, I earned a title that only a handful of athletes a year earn: national champion.

It was spring break of seventh grade, and I was competing in the U.S. Spirit Open National Cheerleading Championships, in Orlando. My teammates and I, who had won various local and state competitions over the past year, put together a spirited performance that left everyone in the stands cheering for the maroon, gold and white.

We struggled to contain our enthusiasm, eagerly waiting for the competition to end. After what seemed like days, but was really a matter of hours, we learned that for the first time in the history of our program, we were national champions.

The Stow Bulldogs were on the map.

Although my cheerleading career ended the following year, I never forgot that moment.

I hope the girls on the Sarasota Christian Middle School cheerleading squad feel the same way.

After a nearly 20-year hiatus, Sarasota Christian revived its cheerleading program this year, and at the end of April, the girls won the national championship at the Florida Cheer & Dance Association Nationals.

The patriotic weekend concluded with the Downtown Sarasota Memorial Day Parade May 30. Veterans organizations and school ROTC programs marched on Main Street to remember those who served.

Even visitors like Sandy Frauhiger, who is on vacation from Indianapolis with her family, made signs to thank the men and women in the parade who served.

“We feel it’s very important to take the time to show gratitude for what they’ve done for us,” Frauhiger said.

Phillippi Shores competition measures up for students

T

housands of miles from 2016 Olympics host Rio de Janeiro, a different sort of olympics took place May 23, at Phillippi Shores Elementary School.

Second-grade students took part in the Measurement Olympics to test their knowledge of centimeters, feet, milliliters and grams at a series of eight booths.

Students competed in events such as the high jump, in which they measured the difference in centimeters between their highest reach standing and then jumping.

A favorite among the Phillippi Shores olympians was the paper plane fly, in which they folded paper airplanes before launching them across the courtyard to measure the distance flown.

The event that caused the biggest splash was the water relay.

For their efforts after completing the events, the olympians were treated to ice cream sundaes. Students had to measure out 2 grams of toppings that included chocolate chips, butterscotch chips and white chocolate chips.
