When the founders of Big Top Brewing Co. planned the opening of a craft brewery in Sarasota County, there were major questions about what kind of a market existed for the product in the area.

As the craft beer industry boomed on a national level, the almost inescapable trend seemed to largely miss Florida.

Tampa-based Cigar City Brewing, which opened in 2008, had attracted wide acclaim by 2010, but no similar business was located in

the Sarasota-Bradenton region.

Based on the strength of the local response to Tampa’s craft beer culture, Big Top CEO Mike Bisaha was hopeful about the demand for a Sarasota-based brewery. As the business ramped up for an early 2014 opening, however, it was lacking one thing: a blueprint for how to proceed.

“That was probably the most challenging part — really having no idea what we’re doing,” Bisaha said.

County will revisit options for planned Kimpton hotel site

Siesta Center sells for $4.6 million

As recently as November, Rod Connelly was confident his vision for a Kimpton Hotel on countyowned land at U.S. 301 and Main Street would come to fruition.

Now, although Connelly is reportedly still pursuing those plans, the county is likely to re-examine its options for the land after the developer failed to close on a deal by Dec. 31. The 10-story, 150-room hotel was tentatively approved in early 2014.

County spokesman Drew Winchester said county staff was planning to once again solicit offers for the land, currently used as a parking lot — although he said staff doesn’t currently have a precise timeline for when it would begin the process in earnest.

“What’s likely going to happen is we’re going to initiate an invitation to negotiate process to have folks offer their vision and their plans for the property,” Winchester said.

Has traffic affected Sarasota County tourism?

County Commissioner Christine Robinson, during a Tourism Development Council presentation Tuesday, said the rumor mill about traffic woes hurting the tourism industry are wrong.

Visit Sarasota County President Virginia Haley backed that up with survey data that showed 97% of visitors were satisfied with their visit, and 93% of tourists said they would return.

A 300-foot block of storefronts on the main drag of Siesta Key Village changed hands this month. The sale marked the most expensive commercial real estate transaction on the island in at least 15 years. And the investor is aggressively seeking more Siesta land.

Jeff Berlin bought the Siesta Center on Ocean Boulevard for $4.6 million May 12, adding another four parcels to his company’s local real estate assets since he moved six years ago to Sarasota. The roughly 20,000 square feet of retail space is 85% leased, with ten-

ants that include the Village Café, the recent addition of Siesta Key Mermaids and a Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office substation.

“It’s one of the three unique, crown-jewel locations in the county,” Berlin said. “It’s in the category of St. Armands Circle and Main Street — it’s a unique commodity that can’t be reproduced.”

A firm headed up by local philanthropist Dennis McGillicuddy bought the properties for $1.1 million in 1994, and Berlin said the recent sale came about through discus-

sions between the parties without the use of a broker.

The new owner has already hired Sarasota-based Hembree & Associates Inc. to manage the property, and it is planning upgrades to the buildings.

Siesta Key Mermaids owner Jayde Morgan said a paint job and more signage would be a boon to her business, which had been buoyed by media coverage.

that places power in the hands of distributors.

Those distributors get beers into bars and restaurants, but they’ve been tied to controversial state laws regulating the operations of craft brewers.

Most notably for Joerger, the brewer-distributor conflict manifested itself in the form of a faceoff with Gold Coast Eagle Distributing, the local distributor for Anheuser-Busch and several craft breweries, including Big Top and Darwin’s Brewing Co. In April, the JDub’s Twitter account posted an email from Gold Coast Eagle owner John Saputo, applauding his sales team for reducing the number of JDub’s taps from 46 to 22.

Saputo chalked up that internal email to the nature of doing business in a competitive, capitalistic environment. He views the relationship between distributors, large breweries and microbreweries as mutually beneficial.

Saputo also said craft beer’s market share has been surging in Florida, with local craft beers driving the growth and allowing beer to capture a greater proportion of the general alcohol market.

“That’s the one thing about craft beer that has really helped our industry,” Saputo said. “Craft beers have a lot of different flavors, textures, ingredients, and we can be just as creative and innovative with our products now as the wine and the liquor people have been.”

Still, Joerger said he was upset by what he viewed as a backwards attitude that prioritized the distributor over the product itself.

“I want to see people care about the beer — followed by the brewery — when it comes to what

they’re going to order, rather than who distributes their beer,” Joerger said. “I don’t think we’re there yet.”

LOOKING AHEAD

With Big Top and JDub’s finding their footing, residents can look forward to a third distribution craft brewery later this year.

Longboat Key natives Geordie Rauch and Vic Falck hope to see Calusa Brewing Co. opened within the next three to six months.

Construction is underway on their south Sarasota brewery, located near the intersection of Clark and McIntosh roads.

As Calusa prepares for its opening, Rauch said one person who’s offered valuable advice is Bisaha. He hopes to get in touch with Joerger in the near future, and said that the camaraderie and cooperation between brewers helped make the foray into the corporate world less painful.

to San Diego as an example of the potential for growth in the Florida brewing industry. Neither is too concerned about being crowded out of the field anytime soon.

“San Diego County alone has more than 100 craft breweries,” Joerger said. “Internally, I kind of chuckle about that. There’s just so much room.”

“We’ve had people ask — ‘Aren’t you worried about being the third?’” Rauch said. “No, it’s great. You don’t want to be the only one, because then there’s no craft beer culture.”

If Rauch does approach Joerger for advice before Calusa opens, he’s likely to get a warm reception — but also to find out that making your way in the craft brewing industry presents its own challenge to every brewer.

“Here’s the blueprint,” Joerger said. “You stick your foot on the gas pedal, you hang on to the steering wheel, and you hold on for dear life.”

As Big Top was getting off the ground, Jeremy Joerger was operating on a parallel track. Still, as he developed plans for JDub’s Brewing Co., he wanted to get some pointers from people who seemed like they knew what they were doing.

About three years ago, he made a trip to Cigar City to solicit advice from owner Joey Redner. As he picked Redner’s brain, Joerger got an initiation into the world he was determined to join.

“Joey gets up, he hugs me, and he says, ‘Welcome to the fraternity,’” Joerger said. “That’s one of the hottest breweries in America, and I’m just some guy with a notepad and a dream.”

JDub’s also recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, and Joerger is hopeful that he can help create the same type of brotherhood on a local level that he felt during his meeting with Redner.

He left behind a six-figure government salary and a fast track to early retirement to pour his life savings into opening JDub’s.

Although the business is adding employees and Joerger is thinking about expansion, he’s not focused on the bottom line.

“My intent is to give the people of Sarasota and the people of Florida another brewery serving high quality product,” Joerger said. “If I can do that, I’m successful.”

He’s happy with the business and his community, but the first year of running JDub’s hasn’t come without its obstacles. In addition to challenges opening the first production brewery in the city — a challenge Big Top faced in Sarasota County — Joerger has been frustrated by a business and legislative environment

cess. Even before the brewery ordered three more fermentation tanks to increase its production capacity by 40%, before it saw its product on the shelves of Publix and on tap in restaurants the brewers had visited for years, there were signals that locals were ready to embrace a hometown brewery.

“When we finally started going, we realized so many people were coming in during our construction phase and were really excited,” Bisaha said.

If it’s not robust today, Sarasota’s craft brewery scene is at least blooming. Big Top, which distributes from Tampa to Naples, with markets in Orlando and Jacksonville as well, is preparing to ramp up its production capacity as those new tanks are installed in the brewery. With four breweries — Big Top, JDub’s Brewing Co., Motorworks Brewing Co. and Darwin Brewing Co. — now open in the Sarasota-Manatee region, brewers have a positive outlook on the future of the industry in the area.

Unconditional Surrender owner advocates for upgrades The man who donated the statue to the city is pushing officials to make improvements to the area surrounding the landmark.

Jack Curran is well aware that a loud faction of Sarasota residents isn’t too fond of Unconditional Surrender, the statue that towers over the bayfront and U.S. 41 near downtown.

Having acknowledged that, Curran wants to call attention to what he believes is a more representative sample of visitors and residents in Sarasota. Curran, the man who purchased the statue and loaned it to the city in 2009, is emphatic on one point: Unconditional Surrender has provided a significant benefit to the city.

“It’s not just me,” Curran said.

“There are a lot of people who think a lot of that statue.”

That’s why, in Curran’s eyes, the city should be willing to make some upgrades to the area surrounding the attraction. Along with the trustees of his estate, Paul Kirkham and John Stafford, Curran is pushing the city to invest in infrastructure improve-

Curran, a 93-year-old World War II veteran. Two years ago, he met with City Manager Tom Barwin and staff to advocate for the improvements. Curran left that meeting with the impression that the city was on board with the proposal, but saw no action.

“We’ve had two appointments with the runners of the city and haven’t gotten anywhere,” Curran said. “That’s tough on us.”

Barwin agreed the ideas sounded good, but cited funding as a major concern.

“My recollection is that we all agreed some additional improvements to the areas would be nice, but funding to repave parking and add additional sitting features as Mr. Curran envisioned were the challenges,” Barwin said in an email to commissioners.

Since then, Curran said he’s been stonewalled. If he were willing to fund the improvements himself, the city said he would have to hire his own landscape architect and submit plans for the project — with no assurance that the upgrades would be installed once he did. In 2013, despite the funding shortfalls, he got assurance from staff that signage should be up in the summer. As of now, nothing has been erected to direct visitors to the statue.

Throughout this process, Curran has developed the sense that the city resents the presence of Unconditional Surrender and is unwilling to invest in it before the 10-year loan period runs out.

When the donation was made, it was approved by only a 3-2 vote.

He points to the city’s Public Art Committee, whose members have been a vocal critic of the statue, as an influence on policymakers.

Taken together, he’s pessimistic about the statue’s odds of

issues. The existing walkway to the statue is too narrow, they say, and sidewalks to the east of the attraction are prone to flooding.

“If you’re down there in the rainy season, it gets a lot of traffic with people going up to get pictures,” Kirkham said. “There’s not enough of the paved area around there — that’s the first priority.”

Curran, who worked for the National Park Service for more than three decades, said the upgrades could benefit the city, as well. By including additional brick pavers as part of a longterm maintenance plan, the area around the state would require less frequent attention from staff.

city administration — which, upon receiving an email from Kirkham last month, was under the impression that Curran had died — Curran and his trustees are uncertain about what their next step will be.

Both Kirkham and Stafford said that Curran is fired up and won’t give up without a protracted fight. Curran, for his part, doesn’t think he’s being unreasonable in his requests.

“We don’t want anything extra,” Curran said. “We expect what the statue deserves in the location it’s at.”

“They can’t wait to move it,” Curran said. “Unless there’s a public outcry — if we get it before the public, they won’t move it.

The public won’t allow it.”

City spokeswoman Jan Thornburg said the city has no plans to move the statue, and neither staff nor the commission has broached the subject of funding the landscaping improvements.

At the May 13 Planning Board meeting, city staff, residents and the board itself all urged against issuing a 4COP liquor license to Paddy Wagon, which hoped to open later this year. Following the Planning Board’s recommendation against the liquor license and the bar’s site plan, the future of the business is now in question.

All three of those groups opposed the Main Street bar on similar grounds: There are too many bars downtown, the proposed bar could create crime and noise issues and the proprietors of the bar — who formerly owned Smokin’ Joe’s — have a spotty track record downtown, they said.

classifies the proposed bar as a nightclub.

That license would permit the sale of liquor, wine and beer without any additional requirements on food sales or seats. As a result, the business needs approval for what the city deems a major conditional use before moving ahead.

Elliott has argued his bar would help alleviate issues between downtown residents and nightlife establishments. With the addition of Paddy Wagon — as well as an Evie’s restaurant and the 24-hour Taco Bus that are also planned tenants of Biter’s Main Street property — the late-night crowds would be drawn away from the more heavily residential segments in the 1400 and 1300 blocks.

“Our product is an upscale neighborhood bar,” Elliott said.

“We specifically chose this location because of its proximity away from the residential area.”

The bar also needed to clear another city regulation before its proposal could become reality.

The city code does not allow for a nightclub use within 500 feet of a package liquor store, but the Main Street location is about 200 feet away from Mal’s Liquors.

In addition to the 500-foot rule, city staff recommended against approving the conditional use because of Elliott’s history downtown. Elliott owned Smokin’ Joe’s — located in the 1400 block of Main Street — through October 2014. Because of the similar size and use, city staff said a direct

“It’s based on facts and documentation and the record,” Senior Planner Courtney Mendez said.

“You have the same owner/operator, very similar characteristics of the use and a documented history to work from.”

In a comparison of the eight city businesses with 4COP licenses between August 2013 and October 2014, the Sarasota Police Department reported 47 incidents at Smokin’ Joe’s. Staff was troubled that Smokin’ Joe’s accounted for 31.3% of the overall incidents at those businesses during that time period, more than 9% higher than the next closest establishment, the Osprey Avenue Publix.

Elliott said Smokin’ Joe’s did 35% more business than any of the 15 bars he currently owns — a phenomenon he attributed to the lack of existing nightlife options downtown. The new bar would be in line with the Paddy Wagon and Linkster’s bars Elliott owns throughout the state, he said.

“I don’t want to spend my afternoons talking to the sheriff,” Elliott said. “I don’t want to spend my afternoon policing things that need not be policed.”

Fourteen downtown residents sent letters to the Planning Board echoing the concerns of city staff, having already encountered issues with nightlife establishments in the downtown area — particularly when it came to noise.

“I think it’s important to remember this: Bars and nightclubs bring three things to the city,” resident Barbara Campo said. “They bring crime, they bring noise and they bring drugs.

It’s that simple.”

Smackdown of Bridget After rookie School Board member Bridget Ziegler posted her rationale for a vote on social media, her colleagues delivered a thinly veiled rebuke. The message: Watch your mouth, missy.

It has been a month and a half, but many of you still will remember the cyclone that whirled about the Sarasota County School Board over its selection of a construction manager for the Suncoast Technical College’s North Port campus.

At the recommendation of Superintendent Lori White, the board voted 4-1 to bypass its selection committee and go with Willis Smith Construction.

The lone “no” vote came from Bridget Ziegler, the rookie board member who was elected last November.

The day after the vote, Ziegler, age 32, posted her rationale and comments on her Facebook page (see box).

Whoa.

At the April 21 School Board meeting, Ziegler’s fellow board members delivered to Ziegler what easily can be called a smackdown, chastising her for seven minutes for speaking out and not following the other members’ board protocol.

Talk about taking Ziegler to the woodshed. “Hey, missy, you need to learn a thing or two before you go spouting off.”

That’s the way it comes across.

Among the disturbing comments came from board member Jane Goodwin: “I just hope in the future you’ll … consider that you have a loyalty to this board and … we represent the Sarasota County School Board …”

No mention of loyalty to taxpayers.

Here’s the verbatim smackdown: Shirley Brown: I don’t know when we had talked about this, or if this something we learned at a retreat, but that we are one body, and that when we take a position on something as a board, we should follow through on that, and we shouldn’t try to pick it apart.

I was a little concerned this week that after the board voted one way on something. Something else came up again on a website and again talked about what I thought was an issue that I thought was already resolved in the discussion, and that was the cost of the project manager.

BRIDGET ZIEGLER’S FACEBOOK POST SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE — Yesterday, the School Board voted 4-1 to ignore the selection committee’s recommendation for who will build the new STC Campus. I was the 1 vote, and here are my reasons: (1) Branding, and specifically the need to match the North and South campuses, was referenced as the reason to override the selection committee’s recommendation. We are using the same architect for the North Port Campus, as we did for the North County Campus. Any qualified CM who follows the specifications and project scope (set by the architect) will be able to achieve an end product to match the North County Campus.

(2) AD Morgan, the selection committee’s recommended Construction Manager, presented project cost estimates that were $4.5 Million less than the competition. That’s $4.5 Million of taxpayer money.

We MUST be good stewards of taxpayer dollars and (read #1) the branding explanation doesn’t justify $4.5 Million.

(3) We MUST respect the integrity of our committee selection process and avoid the perception of favoritism. If we ignore or deviate from our set rules, simply based on relationships or past experiences, it will discourage other companies from providing bids in the future. This could lead to less options for review, a lack of competition and higher costs for taxpayers.

Frank Kovach: Shirley, I agree with what you said. I read the same post. I find it more disconcerting than anything when board members intentionally pass on this information for political gain.

That really bothers (me). We know what the truth is, we know what information was out there. When I continue reading it in the paper, that’s one thing, but when it’s repeated by board members that really bothered (me).

Bridget Ziegler: I personally don’t think that that one item should be completely discounted. My decision wasn’t too based on that … I did my due diligence and talked to lots of people in that industry. I guess we agree to disagree …

But I’ll say moving forward, I do agree with what the board has decided and then you move forward. I was just clarifying where I stood.

Caroline Zucker: Could I ask: Did you speak with the superintendent about that issue so that she could help you better understand that it wasn’t a bid?

Shirley Brown: Do you meet with the superintendent? I meet with her every Monday … I’m reminded of an editorial the Herald-Tribune had about a then local senator who did something. They said she either did it on purpose, knowing she was wrong or she was doing it for a reason, and it said either way, it said she is either a fool or a tool.

What bothers me is that I don’t want any of us to have that put against us.

Because what goes against one, goes against all. When the public hears something is going wrong with the school board, they don’t hear that it is this board member or that board member.

They remember it as the school board.

I just think that we should all try to make sure we put our best face forward in the public and when we’re speaking as a school board member. And that we remember it reflects on all of us. It doesn’t help any of us and surely doesn’t help our school system if we have negative stuff out there.

Frank Kovach: Probably in my 14, 15 years on the school board, I probably have been in the minority of the vote more than anybody that I have ever known. That doesn’t mean I don’t support the decision. I sure as heck don’t go around telling people that the rest of the people made the wrong decision.

We made a board decision, and once you make a board decision that doesn’t mean I’m going to necessarily stand up and say I agree with decision, but I’m not going to demean the rest of the board on their decision.

Jane Goodwin: I think you have to be careful with that. We want to have a great board. We want to not be divisive and fractured. To have a great board you got to trust each other. And you’re now building that up as a new board member.

When I first came on the board in 2010, I sat back and listened an awful lot for the first year because I thought there was so very much I could learn.

And when I had questions, I went to the superintendent or through to the staff members to get answers…

I just hope in the future you’ll go to the right place, but consider that you have a loyalty to this board, and this is a job that we have all undertaken very seriously, and we represent the Sarasota County School Board…

I have a great deal of loyalty to the decisions that are made via the school district and school board. I just hope that you’ll be there with us and not against us.

In May 1981 Gov. Bob Graham helped cut the red ribbon for the opening of the 37.8-mile stretch of I-75 for Sarasota and Manatee counties. The extension was built with the intention of reducing congestion on U.S. 41. The article adds “for we who have traveled Route 41 at any time of the year, driving on I-75 is a treat. Gone is the heart-stopping rush of traffic, the crazies zig-zagging across lanes, cars shooting out of the businesses along 41 and the ugly distraction of billboards and myriad signs.”

Officers instructed the neighbor to keep the dog from bothering people in the area going forward. The neighbor said he would remedy the issue and that no further issues would arise.

CHECKING OUT 5:25 p.m. — 3300 block of North Tamiami Trail Forgery: A man entered a financial services store and attempted to cash a check for $479.67. Two tellers at the store, who had both undergone training to recognize counterfeit checks, immediately identified the check as a forgery.

Both tellers attempted to stall until police arrived to address the incident, but the man left. He left behind the fake check and a Florida driver’s license, which officers took in as evidence.

LOCKING HORNS 6 p.m. — 4800 block of North Tamiami Trail Dispute/Fight: An employee at a hotel reported that a customer was causing a disturbance.

The employee said the lock to the man’s room wasn’t working, and the issue couldn’t be fixed until after the weekend. The employee informed the man of the issue and offered to refund his money so he could find somewhere else to stay. The employee said the man would not leave, and began screaming and insisting he needed to get the door fixed right away. When the employee said he was going to call the police, the man left the area, leaving the belongings in the unlocked room. The employee wanted the incident documented so he would not be responsible for the fate of the man’s property.

A: It’s a brotherhood no matter what the military service was.

Of course Marines have a special bond, as I’m sure all the other branches do, but we just feel a real brotherhood kin there. There is a desire to help each other.

When you talk about boot camp, all services have boot camp. The Marine Corps boot camp is somewhat unique in that the psychology is to tear you all down to the same and build you back up as Marines. As a squad and a platoon you go through that and develop these relationships.

A: The slogan for the parade is that “Freedom is Not Free.” My talk is simply to honor and remember.

When you have someone who has lost a loved, every day is a memorial day.

The easiest way is volunteering, and there are so many ways to do that, whether at the VA hospital, clinic or national cemetery or the honor flight, taking veterans up to the memorial.

Just a simple thing as flying the flag every day — especially on national holidays.

Dan and Tootie Kennedy receive a plaque to commemorate their contributions to the Sarasota Military Academy.

After 46 years, Dan Kennedy is finally graduating from high school — as an educator. The co-founder and former head of school for the Sarasota Military Academy retired after more than 15 years at the helm with a special ceremony during morning formation with cadets Tuesday morning in the SMA courtyard.

Kennedy recalled the early days of the school to the crowd of cadets, alumni and parents.

“Things have certainly changed since 2003,” Kennedy said. “We had no chalk, no desks, no computers, no televisions.”

The decision to retire comes after Kennedy stepped down as the head of school in January 2014 to become the school CEO. He left the school last July to aid in the transition of new Head of School Christina Bowman, who came on board in January 2014.

Originally Kennedy set out on a career as an engineer for IBM until he volunteered with his wife, Tootie, to help mentor a youth group of students with difficulty in math and sciences. Kennedy grew the club to include a modelrocket program.

“It was great fun, but it wasn’t long before these kids, who were

supposedly not good at math and science, were working on equations to determine the drag coefficient, velocity and all kinds of forces on their model rockets,” Kennedy said. “It was an amazing experience. We decided at that point that that was kind of a message for us. My wife and I decided collectively to switch over to education.”

Over the span of his 46 years in education, Kennedy served as the principal for Sarasota High School and assistant principal for Riverview High School. During the SMA morning formation, Kennedy told cadets that his best days by far were spent with the military academy.

“I’m very proud of you,” Kennedy said. “As you’re choosing your careers, pick something that you enjoy doing, because you’re going to be doing it for a long time.”

Kennedy took the opportunity to shine a spotlight on graduating cadet Whitney Stewart for her leadership at SMA. He presented her with a “personal challenge coin.”

SMA Board Chairman Howard Crowell presented Dan and Tootie Kennedy with a special plaque at the base of the flagpole to commemorate their contributions to the school.

It’s a sign of welcome to those entering the Sailors’ baseball complex and a celebration of those who reached the pinnacle of success.

Each of the Sailors’ state championships are listed — eight of which belong to the Sarasota baseball team — along with national player and coach of the year accolades, recognizing the crop of talent that came before.

And for the players now seated in the Sarasota dugout, it serves as a reminder of where the program has been and motivation to add their names to the record books.

It’s been eight years since the Sailors competed for a state title; and now, after a regular season filled with ups and downs, Sarasota is one of only four teams left standing.

“You look to those other teams and admire what they did,” pitcher Jordan Gubelman says. “You wish you could be one of those teams, and now we’re turning that dream into reality. It doesn’t get much better than that.”

Four for the first time since 2007.

The Sailors played Royal Palm Beach in the Class 7A state semifinals May 20, at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, with the winner advancing to the state championship May 21 to face the winner of the other semifinal between Plant City Durant and Oviedo.

“It means a great deal,” Sarasota coach Clyde Metcalf says. “It’s been well documented the struggles that we’ve had. We didn’t play good baseball (for a while), but they changed course and elevated their focus and intensity in every aspect, and it’s been fun to watch.”

After posting a 14-11 record and having lost eight of its final 11 games heading into the district tournament, the Sailors didn’t know what to expect. Sarasota edged past North Port and Lakewood Ranch to win the Class 7A-District 11 title. From that point on the Sailors were a completely different team.

happened to get us going, but I like it,” Gubelman says. “I’m happy with it.”

Sarasota went on to post victories versus Seminole and Lakewood Ranch before posting a 4-0 nine-inning victory against Naples Gulf Coast in the regional semifinals May 14. Gubelman tossed two-hit shutout ball for 8 1/3 innings before turning the ball over to Nick Long after the Sailors scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning in a game that was delayed for two days by inclement weather.

“The intensity at the top of the ninth inning — we knew there was nothing that could bring us down,” Gubelman says. “The intensity kept building, and we knew we would eventually break out and at least score a run.”

Pitching and defense have been Sarasota’s strengths all season, and in the days leading up to the state semifinals, the Sailors canvassed the field, working on the little things that have helped carry them back to postseason glory.

“We really want them to enjoy the experience because going to JetBlue is the epitome of high school baseball in the state,” Metcalf says. “But we also want them to be totally prepared mentally and physically to win a state championship.

“It’s exciting and very gratifying,” Metcalf says. “We spend a lot of time with these guys, and to see the smiles, the joy and the celebration lets you know that all of the time and effort you put into it was worth it.”

Riverview to hold youth hoops camp

Riverview High will hold its annual youth basketball camp June 1 through 4.

The camp, which will run from 8 a.m. to noon, is open to boys and girls entering grades three through seven.

Cost is $90 per player.

Students flutter with excitement at First Presbyterian Butterfly Ball

S

tudents were aflutter Friday for the First Presbyterian Preschool annual Butterfly Ball in the Fellowship Hall.

The event celebrates the graduation of 20 students who will be moving on to kindergarten next year.

Friends and families enjoyed a picnic lunch, photo booth and craft projects with the students.
