The rumors are true: Morton’s Gourmet Market is opening in the Siesta Market spot in Siesta Key Village.

Morton’s owners, Eddie and Todd Morton, have signed a lease to fill the spot currently held by the Siesta Market.

A long-dormant area, sitting in the shadow of downtown, is headed for a turnaround thanks to the outward expansion of growth from the heart of the city.

Right now, that’s Sarasota’s Rosemary District, where density increases and a handful of big-ticket projects have the city and investors confident that the area is set for revitalization in the imminent future.

But soon, some believe, the same could be true for the land east of U.S. 301. With a few projects in the pipeline — including a pair of townhome developments and a high-rise hotel — those people hope that the activity that has taken hold downtown could spread across Washington Boulevard and help grow a sleepy area.

Most recently, Largo-based developer Icon Residential presented plans for two residential projects in the area. Located at 2150 First St. and 41 N. School Ave., the developments would replace several vacant structures with a total of 75 townhomes.

AQUA CONDO BREAKS GROUND This time, it’s for real.

The developers of Aqua, the eight-unit luxury condominium slated for 280 Golden Gate Point near downtown Sarasota, broke ground Tuesday.

The groundbreaking occurred seven months after developers Jonathan McCague and Michael Adams scrapped their original design because of zoning setback issues.

Instead of revising his original design, Sarasota architect Guy Peterson created a new angular structure that will give the building’s eight residences expansive views of Sarasota Bay and the downtown skyline.

The nine-story building will feature eight residences — one per floor, ranging in size from 3,400 to 5,700 square feet under air and ranging from about $3.3 million to $5.2 million.

Only two remain unsold as of Tuesday.

More than a year after consultant Robert Marbut submitted 12 recommendations to help address homelessness in Sarasota County, he will return to evaluate the county’s progress.

During a March 20 budget workshop, County commissioners directed staff to get Marbut to provide an update on the action plan.

Wayne Applebee, director of homeless services for the county, said it’s common for other communities that have utilized Marbut’s expertise to request a similar follow-up.

Marbut will address the county response to the 12 recommendations he made — including the construction of a come-as-you-are homeless shelter that never came to fruition — but will not evaluate the city’s new homelessness plan, Applebee said. A follow-up report, which will cost $17,000 plus Marbut’s expenses, should be ready by June 12.

At Monday’s Sarasota City Commission meeting, St. Armands residents, merchants and landowners presented a united front, advocating for progress toward a long-awaited parking garage near the Circle.

For now, it seems their efforts have paid off: The commission unanimously voted to further explore a list of requests from St. Armands stakeholders, chief among them the construction of a four-level parking garage in the area.

Since 2013, Parking Manager Mark Lyons has worked with consultant Kimley-Horn and Associates to produce a parking study for St. Armands Circle. The recently completed study examined a variety of traffic problems on the Circle, but the bulk of the attention was focused on addressing the parking deficit in the area — estimated at roughly 320 spaces.

To fix that problem, the report named two potential sites for parking garages: two municipal parking lots on North Adams Drive and South Adams Drive.

Each site had its benefits and drawbacks: The north lot was less expensive but smaller and irregularly shaped; the south lot was larger but more expensive and located in a more residential area.

In total, cost estimates ranged from $8 million for a 403-space garage on North Adams to $14 million for a 597-space garage on South Adams. The study also considered the prospect of constructing two smaller lots on each site, a favored solution for Circle stakeholders that came with a price tag of $17.1 million for 605 spaces.

With the city reluctant to commit to the big-ticket item, St. Armands stakeholders threw their support behind a garage at North Adams Drive. To satisfy residents — who had voiced concern about the height of the larger garages — the group also asked for landscape improvements along the entryway to St. Armands Circle, beginning at Coon Key. The commission unanimously voted to look into the stakehold-

ers’ list of requests and said the garage was a long time coming.

“This is the first we’ve seen a coalition like this,” Vice Mayor Susan Chapman said. “Given that there is this pressing need for parking on St. Armands, I would like to try to put into operation some step forward.”

Staff will examine logistical and funding options before reporting back to the City Commission.

Already, the BID has committed $100,000 annually over the next eight years toward the project.

Still, questions remain. Representatives for the merchants, landowners and residents groups suggested that their four requests were a package deal — that to get all stakeholders on board, the entire list needs to be satisfied. Commissioner Eileen Normile pointed out the streetscape request along John Ringling Boulevard was at odds with a vision presented by the city’s Urban Design Studio, which called for formalized parallel parking along the corridor among other features.

Marty Rappaport, a board member of the St. Armands Business Improvement District (BID),

said parallel parking would end up hurting the Circle during event weekends. The garage would address normal peak parking demand, but parking demand for event weekends far exceeds that.

Residents were concerned that, if the event parking capacity along the median leading into the Circle was reduced, more cars would end up parked in surrounding neighborhoods, according to St. Armands Residents Association President Hugh Fiore.

As a result, the list of requests has become an all-or-nothing prospect for the stakeholders.

“Big parking garages are not an easy thing to sell to residents,” Fiore said. “In order to sell it, we need some of the aesthetic part of it — and that’s where the median comes in. It is tied at the hip.”

regulations surrounding these businesses on Siesta Key. In March, Jordan Tamez was stopped after a man told Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office deputies that Tamez had given him counterfeit bills as change. When the deputies identified Tamez, they learned he was a registered sex offender and wanted in Texas, and had failed to register in Sarasota County.

Michael Shay, SKA president, started making calls after hearing about the incident, and he discovered that Sarasota County doesn’t regulate its pedicab businesses. There are no licensing or business insurance requirements.

Shay proposed at April’s SKA meeting and to the Siesta Key Village Association that they should work with the county to establish regulations to monitor these kinds of for-tips businesses — but he said he didn’t want Draconian rules.

“I don’t want to drive anyone

out of business — I think it would protect residents and visitors,” Shay said.

The city of Sarasota has a regimented program for vehiclesfor-hire, which includes taxis, low-speed vehicles and pedicabs.

Companies must be licensed, get vehicle inspections, review employee criminal history and check driving records every year.

The application is $100 for a business license, plus $30 per vehicle permit and $35 per driver’s licensing annually. Driver’s licensing is $20 for an annual renewal.

Shay wants SKA to work with the county to devise standards for requiring a basic background check and proof of insurance.

Businesses and individuals can get a local background check completed by the Sheriff’s Office for $25.

“Homeowners and visitors need to be protected. I think that’s critical,” Shay said. “We need the

pedicabs and golf cart guys — not debating or questioning that. I just want them to be legal.”

Some companies already have protection, however. Johnny’s Original Free Rides, which operates both vans and golf carts, requires drivers to have a safe driving record and insures its vehicles.

Glen Cappetta, owner of Sun Rides Pedicab and a board member of SKVA, supports regulations but said he suggested the county needed to have control years ago, when businesses like his and others began to gain popularity.

Cappetta does state background checks on his drivers and has $1 million worth of commercial liability insurance. His five pedicabs have seat belts and lights.

“Every business should have commercial liability insurance,” he said. “I support fair requirements. I’ve been asking for this for three years.”

When the City Commission appointed seven members to the board in February, commissioners praised candidates for having reasonable and realistic outlooks on the future of the course — driving home that cost would be a driving factor in any eventual improvements.

To familiarize itself with the subject matter, the group held seven meetings in its first five weeks, all of which were more than two hours long. The most intensive was a site visit held in February, a crash course on the operations and infrastructure at Bobby Jones.

Over those first five weeks, they became acutely aware of many of the problems facing the course — most of which have been raised in past studies, but which have been difficult to address financially.

Although most board members were fine with scaling back, Chairman John Bondur was not — and so he tendered his resignation immediately.

“I understand the approach,” Bondur said at his final meeting.

“I don’t agree with it, and I think it’s unfortunate that there’s an unwillingness from whomever the parties may be.”

Still, the board is charging forward. Now that it’s identified obstacles to address, the group is focused on gathering more public input and developing a work plan for completing its directive.

At a meeting earlier this month, members of the committee took one last preliminary look at the big picture, sharing their personal visions for the future of the facility (see right).

At the March 16 City Commission meeting, the committee provided an update on its early work to the commission. To do its job right, compiling the report would take 3,000 to 4,000 hours, the group said. That meant not only maintaining a busy schedule, but also working until the end of the year to compile a report rather than the initial summer deadline.

At that meeting, the commission gave its blessing to the committee to extend the timeline.

However, at an April 7 committee meeting, city administration informed the board that it could not commit the staff hours

three courses. … It is apparent that the courses and buildings have not been maintained for several years as they should have been, but budget cuts and other policies enacted by past commissions have created the present situation of replacements rather than repairs and regular maintenance. I have never envisioned dramatic changes to either of the 18hole courses — just do what is needed.

For a moment, the Sarasota County Commission Chambers were silent after the commissioners unanimously approved a rezone petition, but also required the development to have a 50-foot buffer, per the Silver Oaks community’s plea.

Then, the 30-some residents in attendance realized they got what they wanted. They shook hands, they embraced. A few cried.

Silver Oaks residents have been working to push back the boundary line of a 170-home development by Taylor Morrison to their south. The approved rezone changes the 103-acre parcel’s zoning from one unit per five acres to 2.5 units per acre.

Silver Oaks residents didn’t oppose the development; they opposed the 20-foot buffer between the two communities, which neighbors felt did not adhere to the standards of Palmer Ranch or fit with the natural habitat areas in Silver Oaks.

Attorney Charlie Bailey, representing Taylor Morrison, reminded the commissioners

that the county’s zoning code didn’t require a buffer between the developments at all — Taylor Morrison had volunteered the original 20-foot separation.

“Fifty-foot buffers are required nowhere in Palmer Ranch except along major arterial roadways,” Bailey said.

When the homebuilder first revealed its plans, some of the residents and the homeowners association took immediate action to engage with Taylor Morrison to get a bigger buffer. By the time the proposal reached the Planning Commission, the buffer had been bumped to 30 feet, with a 4-foot berm and a 6-foot wall that would give an 80% opacity to the space between homes. The Planning Commission further stipulated that Taylor Morrison only build a maximum of 13 homes along Silver Oaks’ southern boarder.

But the Silver Oaks residents continued pushing.

Jorg Hernler, one of the neighbors facing the now-vacant parcel, and other neighbors went door to door to built awareness, and gathered about 280 signatures protesting the buffer. The neighborhood organized more than 20 speakers for the meeting.

FRUITVILLE ROAD: Bridging the Gap The city has prioritized a street improvement effort along Fruitville Road to improve the walkability between downtown and the Rosemary District.

Hoping to tame the imposing nature of Fruitville Road for pedestrians, the city and downtown leaders teamed up to improve connections between the heart of the city and its neighbors to the north.

Capitalizing on the growing popularity of new urbanist principles in the city, those involved were intent on making Fruitville Road more inviting. By slowing cars and adding more pedestrian amenities, the barrier the street creates was set to be eradicated.

That was a decade ago, real estate broker and former Downtown Partnership chairman Ian Black said. Despite the ambitious plans, the same challenges remain on Fruitville between U.S. 301 and U.S. 41 today.

“As with a lot of things, a lot of study was done, and nothing happened,” Black said.

The desire to address those challenges also remains. At the April 6 meeting of the Community Redevelopment Agency, the group agreed to reorganize its priorities at the urging of the Community Redevelopment Agency Advisory Board. Plans to redesign the streetscape of Fruitville Road moved to the top of the list, a decision spurred by the growth of the Rosemary District.

“We feel strongly this is an item we should be paying attention to over the next year,” said CRA Advisory Board Chairman Michael Beaumier. “With the large number of projects going on in the Rosemary District, the ability to be able to create connectivity on Fruitville and make it pedestrian friendly is of critical importance.”

The city is in the process of selecting a consultant to produce a concept plan for the project. In the request for proposals provided to interested firms, staff writes that the city hopes to transform the character of Fruitville Road from a suburban thoroughfare to an urban boulevard.

To achieve that transformation, the study suggests a number of changes. The city hopes to slow the roadway without decreasing the current level of service.

Other revisions could include the addition of parallel parking, the narrowing of existing lanes, the installation of more landscaping and the widening of sidewalks.

According to city Senior Planner Steve Stancel, a consultant should be selected within 30 days. Over the next six months, the consultant will work with the community to develop a sense of what people want to see changed along the Fruitville corridor — at which point design and engineering can begin in earnest.

“We’re going into the study without any preconceived ideas, and we’re going to be having lots of public participation events,” Stancel said. “What we hope to do with this is to build a consensus for a concept.”

Black, a leading advocate for the revitalization of the Rosemary District, is hopeful that the changes he helped identify a decade ago will be implemented in the near future. He’d also like to see another, more philosophical change: renaming this segment of Fruitville to “Third Street.”

That was the street’s original name when it was just a two-lane road. In the late ‘80s, the city expanded the street to alleviate traffic, and the road became a thoroughfare to bypass downtown. By changing the name, Black believes part of the natural barrier associated with “Fruit-

As in the past, funding the improvements remains a challenge. With the CRA set to expire in 2016, city money that would have been earmarked for improvements in the area may be harder to come by. Still, that’s why the CRA board agreed to prioritize the planning and design for the project now — so that the first step will be out of the way.

“Hopefully the CRA will continue in some form and we can chip off pieces, or we’ll have to find funding elsewhere,” Stancel said. “Either way, the plan will be in place.”

lion. After the Messina brothers decided to retire, Brown began searching for a new tenant. Last week, Brown said he wanted to see another grocery store in that location.

“I think that is a service that’s needed — there’s a huge void if it’s not a grocery store,” he said.

“Customers and tourists depend on it.”

Brown and Granthon approached the Mortons after the Messinas announced their retirement to see if the father and son would be interested in opening a second location on Siesta.

Brown said when the word got out that the Siesta Market would leave a vacancy in a highly desirable Village location, their phones started ringing, but Brown and Granthon wanted to be selective with the type of tenant filling the space.

After negotiations, the Mortons signed a lease with Brown last week and plan to open the doors sometime this summer.

“They’ll be great neighbors, and it’s great news for Siesta Key,” Brown said. “It will help it grow in the right direction.”

Morton’s Gourmet Market is a locally owned catering and specialty food store located at 1924 S. Osprey Ave. Todd Morton said the new location will be a hybrid of the store’s Southside location and

the amenities of the current Siesta Market, offering what he called “normal” groceries along with Morton’s signature specialty items, prepared foods and hot and cold deli.

The name isn’t changing much: Morton said the current plan is to call the new location “Morton’s Siesta Market.”

“It’s not going to be a copy of (the Southside) market,” Morton said. “It’s a location I think is unique. We thought we would fit in.”

Morton said they are going through the building inspection now with plans to update both the interior and exterior of the building, but they plan to work on the building while the market is operating.

“We want to get in as-is, operate and work on it while we’re in there,” he said. “The sooner, the better.”

Brown said the Mortons shared the same vision as him and Granthon in terms of maintaining Siesta Village’s charm and character.

The Siesta Market employs about 20 people currently. Vince Messina said most of them plan to work until the store closes May 31. Morton said some of the employees have indicated they would like to stay on after the store switches names, and he said the employees would be interviewed and considered for employment at the future store.

f you’ve been to downtown Sarasota, odds are you’ve interacted with a project in which Mark Kauffman has played a part. A doctor-turned-developer, Kauffman’s first major effort was the construction of the Hollywood 20 movie theater on Main Street in 1997.

In addition to a robust downtown real estate portfolio, Kauffman serves as the chairman of the city’s Downtown Improvement District. He’s also spearheading a “catalyst project” in the Rosemary District, a residential/office/commercial/arts space he hopes becomes the nexus of the growing neighborhood.

Q: What’s the biggest change downtown you’ve seen since getting into real estate?

A: The biggest change in the past 15 years is the just the regrowth of the energy of downtown. The various city commissioners over all of that 15 or 20 years, through the City Commission and through the Community Redevelopment Area, have spent a lot of money regentrifying downtown Sarasota and the bayfront, and it shows.

The Downtown Improvement District was established maybe six to eight years ago, and we have had a significant impact to our area. We’re spending all the money that we’re collecting, and we’ve borrowed into the future so we can do projects today as opposed to waiting.

Sarasota is just incredible. Nothing’s going to stop the growth of Sarasota. There are many Florida locations that have beaches and golf courses and tennis courts and the same beautiful weather that we have. The one thing we have that they don’t is the arts. The arts is growing; organizations are getting stron-

ger, not weaker. They’ve come through the last five years without any of them folding. Add that together with a good school system and you’ve got the perfect environment to move to and bring your family and your business.

Q: In some corners, the city has the reputation as being hostile to development. As a developer working closely with the city, what has your experience been?

A: The city has been very progressive and cooperative with myself and my projects. I have no complaints. If I take a proposal to the city that’s adverse to what exists now, instead of saying why, they say why not. They try to find a way of doing it. They realize by helping me, I’m helping the city, and I’ll take a piece of dirt that’s just vacant now and put a building there. The city has its rules and regulations, and you have to abide by them, but they do cooperate.

Q: What led you to invest in a significant project in the Rosemary District?

A: (My daughter Mindy Kauffman) and I both felt the area was ready to explode. With the rebirth of the real estate market, there’s no place for people to go except for the Rosemary District if you want to be close to downtown. While our project hasn’t started, it certainly has precipitated the growth of the area without us even moving any dirt. There are two major apartment complexes going in within one block of where our center will be and several condominium units going up. The prices of the land adjacent to our center have just escalated. We hope to be the center where everybody will congregate.

Q: How did you become a developer after retiring from medicine?

A: It wasn’t by design. It just sort of happened. I was always interested in real estate, but I wasn’t that active in it. I developed a couple of small properties and had some holdings, but when I retired and started with the Hollywood 20, that was stimulating and I was able to purchase a lot of vacant land in that area. I was able to build Links Plaza and the State Street bank building across from Links Plaza. One thing followed another — it wasn’t by design.

Q: What are the major issues you feel still need to be addressed downtown?

A: Vagrancy goes high on the

list, correcting that. Obviously, from what the City Commission agreed to Monday (adopting City Manager Tom Barwin’s plans to combat homelessness), they’re going to become more aggressive on that. Parking is always a problem — parking is a good problem.

If you have a lot of vacant parking, you don’t have a vibrant downtown. The new garage will help.

The other thing is if we could have a transportation system downtown — we’re trying to have a couple of routes to combine with the peripheral hotels.

Downtown is blessed. There are eight hotels right now being planned. This is going to bring 1 million new visitors a year. Downtown is going to explode.

The unassuming, small cottage sits among grand neighborhood mansions and condominium buildings. Its simple, charming architecture is hidden in a deep, thin Siesta Key lot at Point of Rocks — it’s a structure that no one would take note of when passing by.

But behind its quaint exterior lies a rich Sarasota history .

The cottage, located at 7132 Point of Rocks Circle on a 26,000-square-foot lot, gained an official historic designation at the Sarasota County Commission meeting Tuesday after owner Barry Eckhold nominated the cottage for its intrinsic value, and was granted the name submitted

by Eckhold: the Palmer-Honore Cottage.

The 1,516-square-foot cottage will get a plaque placed on the property that explains its historical significance.

Eckhold and his wife, Diane, are Lido Key residents and have lived in Sarasota County for almost 10 years. Their Lido home doesn’t have water access, however, so they went hunting for a home to fit their needs last year.

Eckhold said they looked on Siesta Key, but, at first, couldn’t find something to suit them.

“We saw beautiful homes … but big, monster houses — not what we wanted,” he said.

When the cottage went on the market, however, they were drawn to its simple, “Old Florida” feeling and its unusual proximity to the Gulf of Mexico.

“We had an immediate passion for it,” Eckhold said.

The Eckholds purchased the property from Elling O. Eide’s trust foundation for $1.8 million in May 2014. They wanted to fix it up, and decided to see if the home had historic value.

Debra Flynt-Garrett, chairwoman of the preservation board, helped the Eckholds qualify the home as historical.

“It’s so rare that we get the opportunity to save a structure like this — to have property owners who are coming forward and want to take the cottage back to its original configuration,” she said. “It’s something amazing and exciting for us.”

Greg Hall with Hall Architects is helping the Eckholds with exterior restorative efforts to preserve the integrity of the building as well as interior redesigning and updating. Hall Architects specializes in historic preservation projects and has worked on other notable buildings such as the Sarasota County Courthouse Tower and the Historic Keith Farmhouse at Phillippi Creek Estate.

“The house represents the earliest period of settlement (on the island),” Hall said. “Now, they’re mansions, not modest houses. …

It reflects an earlier period of time and what it meant to live on the island.”

UNVEILING HISTORY

Tracing the property’s history proved to be a maze of clues for Hall, whom the Eckholds hired to help with the cottage’s historic assessment and restoration. Hall had to follow the records back to when Siesta Key was a part of Manatee County.

“They purchased property, realized they had an early house, and we discovered it was one of the earliest on Siesta Key,” Hall said.

Eckhold said the rich history that their combined research uncovered was the “icing on the cake” to the unique property: the property has switched hands with some of Sarasota County’s most notable historic figures.

Benjamin Stickney owned the property in the early 1900s, and sold it to H.H. Honore in 1911.

When he died, in 1918, the property passed to his daughter, Bertha Potter Palmer, who had the cottage built that same year and died shortly after it was completed. Her brother, Adrian Honore, inherited the property. In 1920, the subdivision was platted for Manatee County.

The time period between 1918 and 1926 was significant for Siesta Key because, at that time, access to the Key was limited to one road that went down the center of the island. The home was built before the Point of Rocks subdivision was platted in 1920 by Manatee County and built around the same time as the Siesta Key bridge.

“The cool thing about this cottage is it’s so rare,” said Flynt-Garrett. “There are very few examples of those early beach cottages.”

The Siesta Key real estate market is off to a lukewarm start in 2015, with average and median sales prices both falling in the first quarter compared with the first months of the previous year.

But properties are spending less time on the market as expectations match reality in the decreasingly volatile market, according to Michael Saunders & Co. Realtor Karen Chandler.

The median sales price for real estate on Siesta decreased about 1% to $485,000 in the first quarter compared with the same timeframe last year, according to an Observer analysis of sales data filed with the Sarasota County Property Appraiser. The average sale price fell 17% to $640,480 during the same period when excluding top sales, such as the $5.5 million Sanderling Road estate Michael Saunders agents listed earlier this year.

“I think that because we’ve been in a buyers’ market for so long that people who are listing now are being more realistic in their pricing,” Chandler said.

“You didn’t see that a year ago,” Chandler said.

Siesta outpaced Sarasota County, which had less than half the median and average sales price of the barrier island at $191,300 and $320,000, respectively, for the start of 2015.

“Siesta Key is such a great place,” Chandler said. “There are always going to be people who keep coming here because they want their little piece of paradise.”

An officer issued the man a trespass

warning. The man said that he understood and left the area without further incident.

This means that acceptable uses include commercial, office and residential developments, with a density of up to 50 residential units per acre.

“It’s a pretty flexible zoning, but it’s an area in the past that hasn’t had a whole lot of attention,” Harshman said. “Other than the jail, there hasn’t been a whole lot of development there since Kane Plaza was built.”

Despite the lack of activity in recent years, others have also forecasted growth in that area of the city. Downtown Economic Development Coordinator Norm Gollub singled out the area east of U.S. 301 as a potential hotspot for new affordable housing developments, in part because the density and land values can better serve the demand for smaller units for service workers.

“East of Washington, you’re still within walking distance of downtown,” Gollub said. “I think there are edges of downtown that can add affordable housing.”

To help facilitate that growth, Gollub said he’d like to see improved pedestrian connections to the core downtown area.

Harshman said natural forces are beginning to direct developers to that part of the city. In the past, those builders would focus on downtown and the bayfront. With land dwindling elsewhere, they’re re-evaluating their options.

“As those areas start to see heavier development and increasing values, you see the market

Weidner pointed out one positive: With the voter-referendum devoted millage for the district’s operating budget, he can continue planning the budget for the upcoming staffing vacancies.

By the end of the 2014-15 school year, the district could have more than 100 vacant positions due to retirement and turnover. The board told district staff at its March budget workshop to prioritize the staffing concerns.

“With us moving forward, we’ll be out there in late May ready to hire for our vacancies,” Weidner said.

The Sarasota County School District is feeling the impact of a showdown between the Florida House and Senate in Tallahassee.

The district is proceeding with internal budgeting and staff hiring but could face delays when it comes to confirming final revenue numbers.

Deputy Chief Financial Officer Al Weidner told the school board at its monthly workshop Tuesday he received school department budgets earlier this month, and he plans to bring those budgets to the board for consideration.

The board will keep the budget status quo until revenue numbers come in from the state. However, the Florida House and Senate have not yet compromised on expanding Medicaid to uninsured residents. Until the state can agree on its budget, local school districts will not have state funding numbers to use for their 20152016 budgets.

Weidner said he wouldn’t be surprised if a compromise wasn’t reached until June, and he expects the state might go into special session.

“This year will be one for the record,” he said, recalling a time in the 1990s when the state’s budget was similarly delayed. “We’re in a situation of a lot of uncertainty.”

The Siesta Key office of Coldwell Banker is in the doghouse — but in a good way. An adoption event in conjunction with Sarasota County Sheriff’s Animal Services, called the Homes for Dogs Project, is trying to help pets find their forever homes.

Coldwell Banker is on a mission to help find homes for pets through Adopt-a-Pet.com in a national campaign to house 20,000 pets in 2015. On April 18, the group hosted an adoption marathon at the Siesta Key location on Ocean Boulevard with the help of Sarasota County Sheriff’s Animal Services.

Eight dogs were present and available to adopt. The team

was able to place one lucky pup with a family.

The Rotary Club of Sarasota Keys Foundation awarded the achievements of local teens and adult volunteers at the 29th annual awards dinner April 9, at Café L’Europe.

Six high school juniors and seniors received the 2015 Distinguished Student Award for outstanding academics, community service and leadership achieved while overcoming personal difficulties and family challenges. Students winners were: Brooke Bezdek, Tyesha Brown, Matthew Graham, Matthew Hostetler, Jackeline Juarez and Desara Nelson.

SRQ Volunteens pitch in for Global Youth Service Day

T

he SRQ Volunteens pitched in Saturday morning at Phillippi Estate Park by rounding up buckets of air potatoes with the Sarasota Bay Guardians.

The event was part of a weekend of volunteer opportunities for the Global Youth Service Day Weekend that kicked off with an event Friday at Girls Inc. Air potatoes are the nonedible fruit of an invasive vine that is common along Phillippi Creek and throughout the state. The vine is recognizable for large heart-shaped, glossy leaves.

Equipped with buckets, gloves and shovels, volunteers combed through pathways looking for air potatoes. The three teams of SRQ Volunteens members collected a total of 244 pounds of potatoes.

The group also took home the award for weirdest air potato found.

On Sunday the SRQ Volunteens concluded the weekend with a day of cleaning up Sarasota Bay with Mote Marine Laboratory representatives.

eading into the bottom of the seventh inning trailing by two runs, Sarasota High softball coach Amy Nye turned to each of her players in the dugout and got the same reaction from all of them: “We’ve got this.”

Sarasota is used to pressure situations. It’s what the players focus on every day in practice.

So when it came time for the Lady Sailors to step up in the Class 7A-District 10 championship versus Braden River April 16, the players were more than happy to deliver.

After a fly out to start the inning, Lexi Johns drew a walk, Avery Miller hit an infield single, and Halie Roberson walked to load the bases. Alyssa Price hit a grounder to Braden River first baseman Bethaney Keen, who tried to get the force out at home, but the throw was wide.

In front of a raucous home crowd, SarahBeth Wengerd, who hit a solo home run earlier in the game, stepped into the batter’s box and sliced a single to left center field, scoring Miller and Roberson to win the game 14-13.

The Lady Sailors, who took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, rallied back three times, scoring 11 runs in the final three innings.

“They were ready to walk up to the plate and do their job,” Nye says. “That’s what we do. That’s

why we work on this every day.

It was just an unbelievable game, and that just shows the hard work our kids put in day in and day out.”

Sarasota and Braden River combined for 27 runs on 34 hits with 22 runs coming in the last three innings. Miller finished with four hits and scored four runs. Roberson added three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored. Wengerd had a home run, a single, two walks, three RBIs and scored three runs.

Megan Custode finished with two hits and four RBIs. “We knew it was going to be a game like that with (Braden River),” Nye says. “That’s just the way it is with us. We just fight, fight, fight. We expected that, and our kids played well on both sides of the ball.”

As the district champion, Sarasota will host Seminole in the Class 7A-Region 3 quarterfinals April 23. The winner will advance to the regional semifinals April 28 to face the winner of the other quarterfinal between Braden River and Clearwater Countryside.

Ryan McMahon always knew he was capable of playing alongside the nation’s elite.

The Cardinal Mooney senior guard just needed an opportunity to show that he belonged. He needed someone to take a chance.

With his senior season winding down, McMahon finally garnered the attention of Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino, who offered McMahon a scholarship to the University of Louisville in February.

On April 15, with his family, teammates and coaches by his side, McMahon signed a national letter of intent to play for the Cardinals.

“It’s incredible,” McMahon says. “This (moment) is all I’ve been working for and thinking about. I’m just happy to have been given an opportunity. I’ve been working so hard to get here. I’m just glad it all paid off.”

McMahon, who plans to study business, was one of seven Cardinal Mooney student-athletes across four sports who signed college scholarships last week.

This year marked the first year the tournament — regarded as the premier men’s professional tennis tournament in Southwest Florida — was held in Lakewood Ranch.

Argentina’s Federico Delbonis defeated fellow Argentinian Facundo Bagnis 6-4, 6-2 to win the men’s singles championship.

Bagnis later teamed up with Facundo Arguello to win the men’s doubles championship with a 3-6, 6-2, 13-11 victory versus Korea’s Hyeon Chung and India’s Divij Sharan.

In the women’s final, Fanny Stollar, who trains at IMG Academy, defeated Out-of-Door Academy’s M’Balia Bangoura 6-1, 6-3.

shton Elementary music teacher Joan Tracey wants students to use everything around them — including themselves — to make music. She teaches them how to do a drum roll on the cafeteria tables and how to clap and stomp to the tune of “We Will Rock You.” For a special project, Tracey challenged students to use everyday household items and recycle them into an instrument. The assignment required students to think outside of the normal instruments of guitars, drums and pianos to create an original sound.

“I try to give them a lot of suggestions. I try to give them a lot of sites on the computer where they can get ideas,” Tracey said. “I encourage them to make these instruments with their families, because, to me, it’s a bonding time.”

To inspire students to get creative, Tracey invited members of the band The Garbage Men to perform for students in March. The local band only plays with instruments constructed out of recyclable materials. Cereal boxes serve as the body of their bass and guitar with buckets and a trashcan used as part of the drum set.

“You never know what to expect from year to year,” Tracey said. “I’m always so surprised when I see them. Sometimes the quietest child in my classes will come up with the most fabulous instruments.”

The Sarasota Republican Club hosted its monthly dinner meeting featuring guest speaker Rep. Vern Buchanan April 16, at Marina Jack restaurant. To start the meeting, city commissioners Eileen Normile and Stan Zimmerman asked club members to support them in the City Commission run-off election May 12.

Buchanan then updated constituents on any progress and issues in Washington, D.C. “You’ve got a super majority in the House that is sometimes still dysfunctional, but I feel pretty good about it,” Buchanan said.

“We’ve got 54 seats in the Sen-

ate, which makes a big difference, because we’re going to be getting things done in the next couple of weeks.”

Buchanan serves on the Committee on Ways and Means that has jurisdiction on tax policies.

He addressed the priorities of the committee.

“We had a retreat with Paul Ryan, myself and a few others, and our goal is to try to get as much done this year ideally,” he said. “Our goal is we want to simplify the tax code that is 75,000 pages.”

Following his update, the floor was open to questions from Sarasota Republican Club members.

The Sarasota Garden Club spent the morning recapping a successful year and recognizing members for their efforts at an annual meeting and luncheon at IMG Academy Golf Club.

The meeting included an update on the historic lantern recently installed at the club, and new members were also welcomed to the club.

Afterward guests mingled before being seated for lunch. The guest speaker for the luncheon was

Ron McCarty, curator for the Cà d’Zan, the former home to John and Mable Ringling. The home holds significance for the Sarasota Garden Club because Mable Ringling helped start the club and served as its first president.

Following the luncheon two more guests of honor were high school seniors and scholarship recipients India Pawlowska and Jennifer McGann. Both students received $2,000 toward their studies in natural sciences that they will apply at the University of Florida. A third scholarship

was awarded to University of Florida sophomore Raymond Odeh. He is studying horticultural therapy.

Sue Angle, former club president and current president for the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, recognized a handful of members with the Pillar of Pride membership to the organization.

President for the Sarasota Garden Club Olivia Haynes gave out club awards, including a Leadership Award to Judith Hydeman.

The State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota Model UN team made history at the 25th annual Southern Regional Model United Nations conference by winning the top honor of Outstanding Delegation.

The team represented China earlier this month at SRMUN in Charlotte, N.C. Their efforts on committees such as the General Assembly, INTERPOL and the Security Council also earn the Best Position Paper.

Team members include students Jordan Foth, Anne Miller, Kristen Moreno, Carolina Montes, Matthew Ruch, George Vasquez and SCF Collegiate School student Carlyle Styer. The SCF team competed against more than 300 students from four-year universities and two-year colleges from across the country.

TARC is the U.S. aerospace and defense industry’s flagship program designed to encourage students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students design, build and fly a rocket to meet specific altitude and flight duration parameters to qualify.

Four seventh-graders: Rocket Burns, Jack Gallahan, Vinay Konuru and Vinny Scuteri, will represent Pine View for the first time. This year's rules require a rocket to be able to carry a raw egg, reach 800 feet and return to Earth without any cracks within 46 to 48 seconds.

Engaging students in a foreign language is Angela Mejicanos’ specialty at the Out-of-Door Academy lower campus. As the Spanish teacher for grades preK through fifth grade and the director for community service, Mejicanos comes up with creative solutions to keep students engaged.

She keeps a jar of beans on her desk. Mejicanos incorporated the beans into her lessons through a book “Pedro and his Loco Beans.”

“It’s about a little boy who visits his grandfather’s ranch in Mexico with jumping beans,” Mejicanos said. “It’s one of my tricks that I pull out of my hat, and that’s got to be my favorite one.”

remembered what was in there. I thought he was making it up but then she actually found it.”

Using the findings in the time capsule Ditmars’ current students will work on a unit about archeology and anthropology to learn about 1995. One of her students, Eliseo Dawkins, was looking forward to seeing what had been buried for so long.

“I was looking for stuff they had back then before the modern time,” Dawkins said. “I was looking for how Bay Haven was when Mrs. Ditmars was teaching with her old students that are now about 30. It’s kind of a fun experience because we do stuff like real archaeologists do.”

In 1995 the Major League Baseball strike came to an end, the Academy Award for Best Picture went to “Forrest Gump” and the verdict for the O.J. Simpson trial was not guilty. For Maribeth Ditmars, it was her first year teaching at Bay Haven School of Basics Plus. That same year Sarasota County Historical Commission designated to the school as historic.

To incorporate the dedication and commemorate the event, Ditmars tasked her class of fourthgrade students to put together a time capsule to be buried. Until last week the capsule remained buried near one of the posts for the historical marker at the entrance to the school. On Friday, Ditmars and her current class dug up the contents of the capsule Ditmars decided that 20 years was sufficient time to reflect on the capsule and thought it would be an appropriate way to conclude her teaching career at Bay Haven School of Basics Plus. Ditmars will retire at the end of the school year.

“I thought it would be like coming full cycle,” Ditmars said. “My career here in Sarasota has been wonderful. I especially cherish my memories here at Bay Haven School of Basics Plus.”

Tony McCormack’s downtown apartment is barely 1,200 square feet, but it’s a lesson in connoisseurship. The art, mostly paintings and ceramics, is all special — in some cases, spectacularly so. The furniture is a personal catalogue of mid-century classics. And the compact setting is perfectly suited for the peripatetic lifestyle that McCormack enjoys — frequent travel and cruises, plus bi-yearly stays in Palm Springs, Calif.

McCormack is technically retired, but, like many Sarasotans, he seems busier than ever. His various collections have become so vast — and are still growing — that he sells pieces at antique shows all over the country. Along the way, he’s become an expert in many fields. In fact, he’s past president of the American Art Pottery Association. Not bad for somebody who started out with

some Fiestaware he found at a flea market.

Now his collection includes rare pieces from the finest potters of the last century. There’s a tissue-thin vase by George Ohr, the famous “Mad Potter of Biloxi.” Next to it on the shelf are several Newcomb College pieces, the highly sought-after work made a century ago by the genteel female students at the famed New Orleans college.

With their distinctive motifs of Southern flora and fauna, price tags can go into the 10s of thousands. And perhaps most unique of all: a white unglazed bisque vase, signed by Louis Comfort Tiffany.

McCormack’s apartment is his third Sarasota retirement home. The first, a house on Bird Key, he shared with his partner, Don Uhlenhott, when they moved down in 1983 from Atlanta. When Uhlenhott died, McCormack moved to a condo in The Meadows. It was comfortable but too far away from

The living room provides a good introduction to McCormack’s style. The color palette consists of the earth tones that define the mid-century look.

There’s a low campaign chest by Heritage on which are displayed several choice items: an unusual Rookwood plaque framed in gold, a covered jar by Tom Turner and a vase by Charles Counts. Stools

His most interesting finds are taken to Palm Springs for the yearly Modernism show.

“It’s the best in the country,” he says. “Ten days of lectures, tours and parties.”

In fact, the desert community has become a second home. He rents a place there several times a year for a prolonged stay.

Surprisingly, McCormack’s Sarasota apartment is also a rental. With the bulk of his collections stored elsewhere — he has seven storage units in Sarasota alone — his home functions as a way to display what interests him at the moment.
