Wyland supports USA surfers

The USA Surf team is set to join the Tokyo Olympics this year, and it will have a little help in getting there.

The Wyland Foundation, a nonprofit that promotes healthy waterways and environmental conservation, is supporting the team through fundraising. Artist Wyland is painting a pair of surfboards that will be auctioned off to raise money for team.

The artist, who has a Wyland Galleries in Sarasota, specializes in marine life artwork. For the Olympic teams, he painted dolphins and an octopus on each surfboard respectively.

Purim on parade

Temple Sinai embraced its colorful side and put on a cheery preschool parade for Purim on Feb. 26. Temple families embraced the holiday and dressed up their kids in costumes including Spider-Man, princesses and dinosaurs.

Laura Freedman, the director of Early Childhood Education at the Gan at Temple Sinai, led a line of excited preschoolers around the Temple Sinai parking lot.

Once parents had been able to cheer along and take photos of their children, Freedman and other staff walked the kids back into the school, where they put on a puppet show.

Airline expands Chicago service

American Airlines will continue daily service from SarasotaBradenton International Airport to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, a move that converts seasonal service to a year-round schedule.

In a news release from SRQ on Tuesday, the airport also said American would fly twice a day to its Chicago hub from June 3 to Sept. 7 aboard an Embraer 175 aircraft.

The airport said American has extended the length of its seasonal schedule and added more nonstop destinations since 2019, adding service to Philadelphia, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Chicago, in addition to existing flights to Charlotte, N.C., and Washington’s Reagan-National.

Siesta Key was one of eight Florida beaches to crack the top 25, with St. Pete Beach claiming the No. 1 spot.

The awards are calculated based on the platform’s reviews, ratings and saves in the year previous. Beaches are one of many categories, including restaurants,

hotels, attractions and emerging destinations.

The No. 17 listing is a demotion for the beach, which has consistently ranked in the site’s top 10 since 2015.

Last year, the beach also ranked No. 11 in the world rankings. This year it didn’t even make the list.

Former Sarasota County Commissioner Charles Hines has withdrawn himself from consideration for Manatee County’s interim administrator role.

In a letter to Manatee County Attorney William Clague, Hines wrote on Feb. 25 that he was removing himself over concerns that he, as an interim administrator with interest in holding the job permanently, would be called upon to recruit other candidates for the job as well.

Commissioners have until March 23 to fill the interim role.

Administrator Cheri Coryea resigned from the job in February.

s more than a dozen residents at Monday’s C i ty Co m m i ss i o n meeting asked officials not to use land in Payne Park for a venue for the Sarasota Orchestra, several speakers offered a common refrain: Haven’t we already gone through this?

To some extent, the answer was yes. In 2019, the Sarasota Orchestra announced Payne Park was the only site within city limits it had found to build a music hall. Orchestra representatives asked the city to dedicate 7 acres of the park for construction of a complex that could serve the arts organization’s long-term needs.

The proposal had some supporters, but it drew much more vocal pushback from residents who were steadfastly opposed to the prospect of giving up green space. Those residents were unconvinced by the orchestra’s claim that the park was the only viable option in the city for moving from the bayfront. So was the City Commission, which voted 4-1 in May 2019 to reject the idea.

Nearly two years later, however, some city officials believe circumstances have meaningfully changed. Mayor Hagen Brody voted to rule out Payne Park in 2019, but last month, he determined that decision was worth revisiting. The orchestra has still not settled on a location, but it has focused on sites outside of the city limits.

At Brody’s request, the commission discussed whether it should empower staff to reengage the orchestra by putting Payne Park back on the table. The commission voted 4-1 in favor of reconnecting with the orchestra and reversing its firm prohibition on the prospect of using land in Payne Park for a music hall.

Based on Monday’s commission meeting, giving the orchestra access to Payne Park remains a contentious proposal — not just

among members of the public but also among elected officials.

A majority of the commission expressed some preference for not using parkland off the bayfront to accommodate the orchestra.

“I do not have any interest in having another discussion about Payne Park proper,” Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch said.

Although some speakers and commissioners expressed hope that there was enough property around Payne Park to facilitate a venue without using green space, others were less reluctant to consider using parkland. Brody said part of what fueled his desire to revisit Payne Park as an option was fear the orchestra could move elsewhere in Sarasota County.

“We have to recognize the orchestra has publicly ruled out any other spot in the city,” he said.

“I don’t want to make it sound like this is the last resort, but they’ve made it pretty clear that it is.”

LEGAL ISSUES

One voice not represented Monday: the Sarasota Orchestra.

On Tuesday, orchestra President and CEO Joe McKenna said the organization was “actively listening” to the discussion and that there were “a lot of different nuances” to the conversation. McKenna said the orchestra appreciates the dialogue as it continues to work on plans for a new venue and that it was working to schedule a follow-up meeting with city administration.

Although McKenna declined to discuss many specifics regarding the orchestra’s takeaways from the meeting, he did say he wanted to know more about the city’s stance on the legality of a music hall in Payne Park. The city purchased the land at a discount rate in 1925, a gift from Calvin and Martha Payne. The deed came with a restriction that stated the land “shall be used for park, playground and kindred uses and for no other use or purpose.”

Advocates for preserving Payne Park have used that clause to

argue the city could not allow a venue in Payne Park. In 2019, City Attorney Robert Fournier wrote a memo stating that Florida case law “could support a potentially successful legal argument” in favor of a venue in Payne Park.

Fournier said state law could allow for a broad definition of a park that does not preclude the inclusion of such a facility as a museum or performance space.

Kelly Franklin, the president of the Preserve Payne Park coalition, said city officials should expect a multiyear legal battle if they do attempt to use land in the park.

Franklin said she thought it was possible to arrive at a plan that satisfied all parties.

“If they’re stuck on that one solution, we will end up in a stalemate,” Franklin said. “But there’s more than one solution to the need.”

OTHER OPTIONS

Although the orchestra has said Payne Park is the only suitable option in the city, speakers at Monday’s meeting offered alternatives.

Ahearn-Koch said the orchestra is free to build a new venue on city-owned bayfront land, where the Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center sits. (In 2018, the orchestra announced its intent to move off the bayfront, in part over concerns related to sea-level rise.)

Commissioner Erik Arroyo said he was having ongoing conversations with the Sarasota County Agricultural Fair Association about placing the orchestra at the Sarasota Fairgrounds. (In 2019, the orchestra said the fairgrounds presented design challenges and possible lease conflicts, though the fair association said it was willing to explore a partnership.)

Commissioner Kyle Battie said he had seen a conceptual design from architect Michael Halflants using land adjacent to Payne Park that appeared suitable for addressing the orchestra’s needs without eliminating green space.

cifics of the idea before sharing it with the orchestra, but he felt it was possible to preserve the park and meet orchestra criteria.

“For us, there was a clear solution that would do both,” he said.

Several speakers suggested the orchestra wasn’t being flexible.

In 2019, city staff identified three other sites for an orchestra venue, including a city-owned parcel adjacent to Payne Park that could take advantage of nearby privately owned land.

Resident Chris Bales wondered whether the organization had an “edifice complex,” plotting an overly large structure with debatable long-term value as other orchestras face financial challenges and declining audiences.

“I have to ask: Are we in danger of having a big, empty, expensive concert hall?” Bales said.

McKenna said the orchestra determined its criteria for a new venue based on its needs for the next 100 years. In addition to a performance hall for the orchestra, the venue will include rehearsal areas and facilities for its educational programming.

“Everything the orchestra has a position on is the result of extensive planning, due diligence, thoroughness,” McKenna said. “That’s been the basis of the entire process.”

Commissioner Liz Alpert, who supported the orchestra’s initial proposal, still thinks Payne Park makes sense. She said she’s received input from constituents who want the city to take action to prevent the orchestra from relocating to such an area as Lakewood Ranch. She noted the orchestra’s facility sits on 4 cityowned acres slated to become a park, which would help offset the loss of any green space.

As the city once again discusses its options with the orchestra, both patrons of the arts and park preservationists will be watching.

“If necessary, we’ll be back in force,” said Sami Leigh Scott, the vice president of the Preserve Payne Park coalition. “Payne Park is worth another fight.”

Schools promote mental health services School officials hope increased attention on the well-being of students and staff will help offset the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

t’s no secret that COVID-19 has taken a toll on people’s mental health.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans have reported elevated adverse mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression and suicidal ideas, since June 2020.

Now, Sarasota County School officials are focusing in on wellness services for both students and staff to ensure the well-being of the district’s population.

According to a 2018 mental health scan conducted by University of South Florida, there are more than 10,000 children with untreated mental illness in the county. Through the district’s mental and behavioral health services department, employees seek to identify those students and help get them treatment.

One way to do so is through the Adverse Childhood Experiences study, which asks students to self-report adverse experiences.

Debra Giacolone, the supervisor of mental and behavioral health services, said that if a student experiences one such event — such as abuse, neglect, parents’ divorce, an incarcerated guardian

or a violent household — they are one and a half times more likely to have academic problems in school. They are two and a half times more likely to have behavioral concerns.

Higher ACE scores are linked to depressive disorders, anxiety, panic reactions, poor anger control and more.

The district was able to receive about $1.5 million from the state over the past two years as part of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act. The money helped facilitate a variety of programs including Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports in each school, training more than 1,000 staff members on recognizing mental health issues and implementing restorative strategies.

“We know that teachers are the best observers of students’ mental health needs because they are the people that spend the most time with students,” Giacolone said. “They’re trained diligently to be on the lookout for changes in behavior because that’s usually the No. 1 indicator that something isn’t going well for those students.”

Already this year, Giacolone said the district has seen more than 300 students meet with

school support teams. The district this year increased mental health therapist staffing from 18 to 28 and continues to manage 19 interagency agreements for additional services.

The district also has a crisis text line that students can reach anonymously to get help. Giacolone said the line has served more than 500 individuals.

Students often are teamed up with navigators or counselors. Students and staff also are encouraged to use the district’s app Inner Explorer daily to focus on mindfulness.

One area for expansion, Giacolone said, is the possibility of a universal screening process that would identify kindergartners who might have behavioral or mental health needs.

She also would like to see the addition of a mental health therapist on all high school campuses.

Elementary and middle schools already have access to mental health therapists.

The district is also working to improve employee well-being.

their families.

EAP services allow for shortterm counseling to help manage emotional issues, family relationships, financial issues and workplace concerns.

According to data collected by the district, the utilization of EAP services has increased each year since 2018. About 14.7% of employees used the services in 2018 compared to 24.5% in 2020.

The most common uses were connected to legal issues, relationship problems, anxiety/ obsessive-compulsive disorder/ phobia and stress.

Supervisor of Risk Management Lynn Peterson said both the increased usage and the most common concerns are most likely a result of COVID-19.

“We think the concerns coincide with being home more, having more family time and hav-

ing more potential relationship issues,” Peterson said.

The district in 2019 began the Take 10 campaign, which encourages staff members to take 10 minutes for themselves daily.

Through emails, staff members are provided with quizzes, articles and EAP services to encourage overall well-being.

Peterson said web logins for the Take 10 campaign have increased from an average of 791 in 2019 to 1,025 in 2020. Website visits increased from 3,422 in 2019 to 5,145 in 2020.

Peterson said that although the usage numbers seem small, not every employee utilizes the EAP services. Instead, some choose to seek care on their own.

“We only expect that to increase as more and more people pay attention and utilize those services,” Peterson said.

tion from 11 speakers during the public comment period of Tuesday’s meeting. Although some praised the reconfigured proposal, others said they believed their concerns related to traffic congestion were still unanswered. They also questioned why the development was asking for a rezone without submitting a site plan, though city officials said site plan approval would be tied to adhering to the conditions associated with the rezone application.

Despite some lingering public concern, all five commissioners determined the requested

rezoning complied with the city’s standards for review. Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch, who voted against the previous redevelopment application, said she felt there remained legitimate questions about traffic and site circulation that needed to be addressed in the site plan. Still, she thought the revised plan made significant improvements over the previous design.

“This was a very contentious proposal, and I really want to thank everyone for working with the community in creating a plan that I do see got over all of those

compatibility issues,” AhearnKoch said.

Another element that might be addressed during the site plan review is a potential extension of School Avenue to the Bath and Racquet Club property. School Avenue currently has a terminus at Olentary Street, just north of the project site. Although the plans initially proposed extending School Avenue with support from city staff, residents near the project site expressed opposition, citing concerns about increased neighborhood traffic.

The project team withdrew the School Avenue extension as a condition of approval, and Halflants said the developer is ambivalent about whether it is included in the final plans. When City Commissioners Hagen Brody and Erik Arroyo asked about the possibility of a School Avenue connection, Halflants said he believed it would be optimal from an urban planning perspective.

“As an urban designer, it is always better if you connect to neighborhoods,” Halflants said.

The timeline for submitting a site plan is variable, Halflants said. The property owner is in the process of searching for investors to help facilitate the development. Halflants said the property has already garnered interest from outside parties, and he anticipated the rezone approval would trigger more serious negotiations.

“It’s a pretty rare opportunity to have 13.5 acres of city property that’s open for development,” Halflants said.

he City Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to authorize a rezone application for the Bath and Racquet Fitness Club property, a necessary step to facilitate plans for a mixed-use complex with 207 apartments at 2170 Robinhood St. The commission’s 5-0 vote came 13 months after the board rejected a previous iteration of the residential-focused development proposal. Although some residents near the project site continued to express concerns about traffic and residential density, city officials praised the design team for making revisions that responded to concerns about the development’s compatibility with surrounding neighborhoods.

“This is the result of you working with the community,” Commissioner Erik Arroyo said.

The property owners sought a rezone to facilitate a project that would include 180 market-rate residential units, 27 affordable units, commercial and office space and a new tennis-centric fitness complex to replace the existing Bath and Racquet building. Although the residential density is unchanged from the 2020 proposal the city rejected, the developer adjusted the site

layout in an effort to create a better transition between multifamily neighborhoods to the north, single-family properties to the south and commercial areas on U.S. 41 to the west.

The project team has not submitted a finalized site plan to the city, but the rezone application includes a series of conditions that will bind any future development on the site. The conditions include height limits of 45 feet adjacent to multifamily and commercial properties and 30 feet next to single-family areas.

The project must also include at least 40,000 square feet of publicly accessible parkland with a 1-kilometer walking trail.

Michael Halflants, the architect behind the plans, said the proposed residential redevelopment is less intensive than a project that would be allowed by right under the existing office zoning.

He believed it was important to find a way to preserve the Bath and Racquet Club, which opened in 1969 and which he sees as a Sarasota institution.

“The Bath and Racquet Club is a social meeting place and holds an important social function for its members,” Halflants said in an email. “We need more places that bring people together as a united community.”

The Bay Sarasota leadership will appear in front of the City Commission on Monday seeking approval of a site plan for a 10-acre park built on city-owned downtown waterfront land.

The commission is scheduled to review applications associated with the first phase of The Bay Sarasota project, an initiative that intends to eventually redevelop more than 50 acres of city property near Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. The city is working in partnership with The Bay Park Conservancy, an independent group formed to implement and manage the bayfront master plan the city adopted in 2017.

Plans for the initial phase, primarily located north of Boulevard of the Arts and south of Van Wezel, include a lawn, a circular boardwalk above the water, a food and beverage pavilion, and a mangrove bayou. The proposal has drawn opposition from nearby residents, who have raised concerns about the scale of the boardwalk, traffic and plans for events at the park.

Bill Waddill, The Bay’s chief implementation officer, said the group used input from years of community meetings to guide the phase one design. Waddill said the boardwalk and waterfront access were among the top priorities in public surveys.

“We believe it’s really important to reach out to all of our community to make sure we’re welcoming and inviting to all,” Waddill said.

Waddill said The Bay hoped to open the upland areas around this time next year, with the boardwalk taking an additional year.

The Legislature’s agenda In their opening speeches to members of the Florida House and Senate, Gov. Ron DeSantis, Senate President Wilton Simpson and Speaker Chris Sprowls spelled out what we can expect the Legislature to do.

ach year the Legislature convenes, the governor, Senate president and House speaker deliver opening speeches to all 160 lawmakers, giving them and Floridians a glimpse of what their priorities will be.

What follows are some excerpts from Gov. Ron DeSantis’ State of the State address, along with summaries and conclusions we reached from examining their texts.

Here’s what we can expect from the Legislature over the next 60 days.

GOV. DESANTIS

We rejected the policy of sending contagious COVID-19 patients back into nursing homes; indeed, we prohibited the practice. …

“And perhaps most importantly, we are prioritizing our senior citizens for vaccinations.

Florida is putting seniors first because it is the best strategy to save lives and is the best way to honor our elders from whom we draw inspiration. …

“Our efforts saved lives. In fact, 40 states have suffered higher COVID-19 mortality for seniors aged 65+ on a per capita basis than Florida.

“And the cases and hospitalizations for seniors in Florida have plummeted as vaccinations have increased. Since Jan. 30, the number of seniors hospitalized for COVID-19 has declined by 80%, and cases among seniors have declined by 71%. …

“Seniors first works.”

Kids in school

For those of us who have cheered on DeSantis’ bold leadership to resist and reject the fearmongering and lockdowns that have destroyed so many people’s lives and livelihoods during the pandemic, the kicker to DeSantis’ opening remarks should make you let out a major “Oo-rah!”

—Ed. “While so many other states kept locking people down, Florida lifted people up.

“Florida’s schools are open, and we are one of only a handful of states in which every parent has a right to send a child to school in person.

“All Floridians have a right to earn a living — and our citizens are employed at higher rates than those in the nation as a whole.

“Every job is essential.

“If you are working hard to earn a living, we got your back in the state of Florida.

“Every business in Florida has a right to operate. We have stood up for small, family-owned businesses and have saved thousands of them from ruin.

“Because of our actions, Florida is leading the nation in the number of people submitting business formation applications, and we are one of the top destinations for business relocation.

“Friends, legislators, Floridians, lend me your ears: We will not let anybody close your schools, we will not let anybody take your jobs, and we will not let anybody close your businesses!”

RECAP ON COVID-19

The first half of DeSantis’ speech essentially was the governor’s report to Floridians on how well the state has done during the pandemic. He thanked the state’s first responders and then focused on how well the state has done vis-a-vis other states with the elderly, schools and the economy.

The Elderly

“From the outset, Florida has been steadfast in focusing efforts on the protection of the elderly.

“Florida has led the way in providing all parents the right to send their kids to school for in-person instruction. Florida is one of only four states — and the only large state — to offer inperson instruction to 100% of its students. …

“The failure of so many places outside of Florida to open schools at the beginning of the school year will go down as one of the biggest policy blunders of our time.

“Florida did not make that mistake. We followed the data and stood by our parents and students. We ignored the political posturing and fear-mongering and did what was right for Floridians.

“Florida has succeeded where so many other states have failed in providing opportunities for its students in large measure because of the tireless efforts of school superintendents, administrators, teachers and coaches.

They knew keeping kids out of school would be a disaster and were not going to let that happen on their watch.

“On behalf of a grateful state and millions of grateful parents, thank you.”

The Economy

“I am pleased to report that our current fiscal outlook is much better than the bleak forecasts from last spring. …

“When the pandemic hit, I vetoed $1 billion from this year’s budget. I also instructed our executive agencies not to spend all of the appropriated funds because we did not know for sure how much revenue we would be taking in.

“Because Florida’s economy is open, revenue is coming in at levels far higher than even the most recent revised estimates. …

“Throughout the pandemic, Florida has not touched one red cent from our rainy day fund.

“The bottom line is that we saved Florida’s economy, and as a result our budget outlook is positive.

“The priorities we’ve championed — from water resources to education to infrastructure — can be honored.

“Let us get it done.”

DESANTIS’ PRIORITIES The governor told lawmakers he wants to continue working on his post-election promises with education and the environment.

But he also has prioritized issues that you could call carry-overs that roiled conservatives during the Trump years — Big Tech and faulty election systems.

Education: “I reject reductions in funding for K-12 education.

Last session, the Legislature answered my call to increase the average minimum salary for teachers, taking Florida from the bottom half of states to the top five. Let us keep this momentum going. Let us do more this year.”

Environment: “I ask that you continue to fund the key projects — from the EAA reservoir in the south to the projects in the northern Everglades — that … reaffirm our commitment to Everglades restoration and access to safe, clean water for our communities.

“I am also proposing the creation of the Resilient Florida program under the Department of Environmental Protection.

Through this initiative, Florida will invest $1 billion into projects that help our communities adapt to the threats posed by flooding from intensified storms and sea level rise.”

Law and order: “Working with President Simpson, Speaker Sprowls and law enforcement groups across the state, we have

proposed the strongest antirioting, pro-law enforcement reforms in the nation.

“We will not permit localities to jeopardize the safety of their citizens by indulging in the insane fantasy of defunding law enforcement. …

“And we will not leave any doubt in the minds of those who wear the uniform that the state of Florida stands with you.

“To paraphrase an old Merle Haggard song, ‘When you mess with the men and women of law enforcement, you are walking on the fightin’ side of me.’”

Other top issues: n Big Tech — Proposing to give Floridians some recourse if they’re “de-platformed” by the social media companies; and not allow Big Tech to favor via algorithms one political candidate over another. n Elections — Outlaw ballot harvesting and “We also cannot allow private groups to pour millions of dollars into the administration of our elections. That is a public function and should be done free from this type of private interference.” n Protection for businesses and health care workers against COVID-19 liability lawsuits. n Reforms to reduce runaway insurance lawsuits. n Restrict the emergency powers of local government. n Support for infrastructure.

Judging from the number of words and amount of time on particular issues, you could say Senate President Wilton Simpson’s priorities are in the following order. — Ed. State employee pension reform — Figuring out how to reduce the state’s $36 billion in unfunded liabilities. “I believe it is the single largest threat to Florida’s balance sheet.”

Everglades restoration — “Let us put aside politics and embrace a comprehensive plan for total restoration.”

Child welfare reform — “[We need to] create some consistency for children in out-of-home care, so that we can finally stop the revolving door that shuffles kids around from one placement to another.”

School choice — “It’s about time we streamlined eligibility and funding, so that parents have a clear idea of their options.

The fact is, school choice has always existed for wealthy families. I believe this option should be available to every family.” n Raise the minimum wage for state employees.

When you read Speaker Chris Sprowls thanking House members, you can figure out what issues top his agenda. —Ed. “Thank you for insisting that every child can learn to read and for believing that every child should understand how lucky they are to be an American.

“Thank you for recognizing that our communities must be protected both from flooding caused by the rising seas and from intolerance created by the rising woke agenda.

“Thank you for being willing to blow up a workforce system that has forgotten how to get people to work and for taking on a higher education establishment that seems more worried about social justice than about social mobility.

“Thank you for looking for solutions to the failures in black maternal health care and for finding ways to right the wrongs in foster care.

“Thank you for tackling the intractable problems of government accountability and ethics and for promoting laws that encourage a culture of entrepreneurship and economic freedom.”

City keeps options open for Bobby Jones renovation Commissioners vote to seek out companies interested in running the course and funding improvements.

Could the city of Sarasota find a private company willing to pay for a $12 million renovation project at Bobby Jones Golf Club in exchange for the rights to operate the municipal facility?

How about a golf course operator interested in leasing and running the property after the city finishes funding the improvements itself? And if the city did find a willing partner, would it be the best course of action to hand over control of Bobby Jones or to keep the management of the course in-house?

These are some of the questions city commissioners raised Monday as they debated the best approach for renovating Bobby Jones and establishing a longterm management strategy when the facility reopens. The City Commission failed to reach a consensus on its preferred direction, instead agreeing to keep its options open as it explores potential public-private partnerships.

The commission voted 3-2 to

issue an invitation to negotiate, an open-ended process that allows interested companies to submit their proposals for operating the golf course as long as they comply with conditions the city has identified. Although the city has been discussing improvements at Bobby Jones since 2014 to address the facility’s financial struggles, a majority of the board said it was willing to take the time to field outside proposals before beginning construction and finalizing a management structure.

“I just want to keep it simple,” Commissioner Kyle Battie said. “I say we put out the ITN, let it go out there, do what it’s going to do and see what fish we pull.”

The commission has settled on a preferred design for the renovations, endorsing a plan that would downsize the golf complex from 36 holes of regulation plan and a nine-hole short course to an 18-hole regulation course and a nine-hole short course. The city intends to transform 130 acres of the 293-acre property into public parkland for nongolf uses, which will carry additional expenses beyond the $12 million projected for the golf course and clubhouse improvements.

The city intends to ask prospective private partners to adhere to that design and include a tiered pricing structure for the course that offers discounted rates for city residents.

In January, as the city was preparing to solicit bids from construction firms to begin the renovation project, Commissioner Erik Arroyo said he wanted to investigate opportunities for a private company to operate Bobby Jones and potentially fund any improvements. Last month, the commission held a workshop at which the board discussed private management options and heard testimony from golf management professionals who advocated for selecting an outside specialist to run the course.

Not all commissioners believe a private management company is the best option for the city. Commissioners Jen Ahearn-Koch and Liz Alpert voted against issuing the invitation to negotiate, arguing the city could effectively manage the municipal facility itself and retain greater control over the Bobby Jones property.

Ahearn-Koch noted the city had considered private partnerships earlier in the planning process and opted not to go in that direction.

Both Ahearn-Koch and Alpert were concerned about pushing back the start of the renovation project, with city staff suggesting negotiations with an outside company could take six months to more than a year before any agreement is finalized. ing the invitation to negotiate, the commission agreed to authorize staff to proceed with soliciting bids for construction, should the city ultimately decide to undertake the renovations on its own.

“I am not at all in favor of delaying this anymore,” AhearnKoch said. “It’s been four, five years that I’ve been involved in this exhaustive conversation that has been massively inclusive of the entire community.”

Arroyo and Commissioner Hagen Brody expressed their preference for a private operator, and they hoped an outside company might also be willing to invest some money into the improvements to secure the rights to run the course.

Brody said the commission began to discuss renovations at Bobby Jones because the course

required hundreds of thousands of dollars in general fund subsidies, and a consultant projected the course would continue to run a deficit post-renovation while the city paid down the debt from construction. Brody and Arroyo said the use of a private operator could mitigate some financial risk associated with the golf course operations.

Brody said he wasn’t certain what responses the invitation to negotiate would look like, but he argued the city should fully investigate its options before moving forward.

“It’s better to be careful, methodical, to try to make the right decision here even though it may take a couple more months, six months to see what we have,” Brody said.

Dreamers Academy finds campus, plans August opening After several location complications, the dual-language charter expects to open for the 2021-22 school year.

A

fter several years of struggling to find a campus, the bilingual charter school Dreamers Academy has found its new home within the 10-acre Temple Beth Sholom campus.

Now that the school has found a location, it’s moving ahead with plans to open for the 2021-22 school year.

The Sarasota County School Board approved the charter school in late 2018 with the idea of opening in time for the 2019-20 school year. However, throughout the following three years, school leaders struggled to finalize a location.

School leaders originally aimed for a campus close to 17th Street to be near to the county’s highest population of non-English speakers. However, leaders ruled out potential locations along the north county road due to environmental issues.

They then joined a partnership with Save Our Y when it changed ownership from the Sarasota Family YMCA in August 2019.

However, that partnership fell through in early 2020.

Then came COVID-19.

The contract between Sarasota County Schools and Dreamers Academy granted the charter school a three-year window to open, which it now is able to do at Temple Beth Sholom’s campus at the intersection of Tuttle Avenue and Bahia Vista Street.

Founder Geri Chaffee said that after about 10 location negotiations over the past couple years, she is excited to finally find a campus for the school.

Now she’s focusing on filling staff and student positions in time for the August opening.

“I am just so looking forward to having fun with the kiddos,”

Chaffee said. “I miss being in a classroom and watching their eyes light up and seeing how excited they are to learn. That joy is something you can’t beat.”

The school’s mission is to develop bilingual, biliterate and cross-cultural leaders, according to its application. Students will learn in both English and Spanish.

The school, which caters to kindergarten through fifth grade, will be the district’s 13th charter school and its first dual-language public school.

“Dual-language immersion is exploding all over the country because it works,” Chaffee said.

“The data coming out of these programs is that the students are performing better than monolingual students because it enhances cognition, executive function,

and the kids are just engaged.”

The school, which will serve about 300 students, is 28,000 square feet surrounded by green space, gardens and playgrounds.

“The building’s design, with its high ceilings, large classrooms and exquisite outdoor areas, [is] ideal for the type of integrated and enrichment academic practices that will develop bilingualism and excellence in all our students,” Dreamers board member Dan Kennedy said.

“We couldn’t be happier with the location and the commitment of Temple Beth Sholom.”

Dreamers will be located in the temple’s educational complex, which was previously home to a private school that moved to accommodate student growth.

Also on Temple Beth Sholom’s

property is An Apple Day Academy, which Chaffee said Dreamers is interested in working with to supply voluntary pre-K to future Dreamers families.

Temple Beth Sholom President Eric Faerber said the partnership with Dreamers will allow the temple to continue its legacy of community partnerships.

“Our board is extremely enthusiastic about having Dreamers Academy on our campus,” Faerber said. “Education and service have been at the core of our work for a century, and we look forward to a relationship where our organizations can continue to serve Sarasota families in innovative and impactful ways.”

The school will have 108 spots for kindergarten students and 108 first graders. One class of 18 students each will be open for grades two through five to accommodate siblings and children of Spanishspeaking parents.

Students in kindergarten and first grade will take dual immersion courses because they tend to respond better to them, Chaffee said. The students will have two teachers: One will teach half the day in Spanish, and another will teach half the day in English.

Older students will follow a standard curriculum to start, but as the first two cohorts of students age, the program will expand to include dual-language classes for all students kindergarten through fifth grade.

The school is now accepting applications for the 2021 school year at DreamersAcademy.org.

Music teaches a lesson WBTT partnered with Jazz Club of Sarasota and Sarasota Schools to teach students about Black history through music and theater.

O

n a Thursday morning, the ominous sound of Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit” can be heard echoing through three Sarasota County classrooms.

After the final note, a performer

explains the significance of the song’s haunting lyrics and how they relate to the 4,700 reported lynchings from 1882 to 1968.

The performance is part of Jazzlinks, an educational program that through music and theater teaches students about Black contributions to U.S. history.

The program, a collaboration

with Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, Sarasota County Schools and Jazz Club of Sarasota, comes in two iterations taught in rotating years.

The first, which is in cycle for this year, is about the Harlem Renaissance, and the second, which will be presented next year, features contributions from the

civil rights movement.

The Harlem Renaissance program touches on the Great Migration, or the relocation of more than 6 million Black Americans from the rural south to northern cities, to Jim Crow laws to the contributions of such artists as Langston Hughes, Cab Calloway and Zora Neale Hurston.

Events the civil rights program focuses on include the 1963 Birmingham church bombing, school marches and segregation.

Students hear music from artists including Mahalia Jackson and Grant Green.

WBTT writes the scripts in concert with social studies specialists at the school district to make sure they mesh with the curriculum.

The programs are given annually in February and March.

High school social studies programs specialist Bernadette Bennett said when administrators began developing the curricula, they started with the music of the time periods then connected the music’s messages with historical documents and various movements from the same time period.

“The performances really help the kids remember the curriculum because we’re coming at it from so many different perspectives,” Bennett said. “We can read the primary source documents and listen to the music, but to have the performances and the dialogue and really bring it to life, it’s incredible for our kids.”

WBTT Founder and Artistic Director Nate Jacobs said the program is aimed to enhance and expose the education of Black arts and culture to students.

“It’s evident that a lot of the African American story, history, culture, contributions are not in the textbooks and are very seldom

discussed or celebrated to the extent of white culture,” Jacobs said. “It is our responsibility to propagate our stories not only to the masses, but so young African American children understand where they come from.”

Typically, actors from WBTT visit classrooms to teach the subject matter and then put on a large performance for the students.

However, like many in-school programs, COVID-19 took its toll.

WBTT had to rethink its program to make it visually and mentally stimulating over Zoom.

WBTT member Travis Ray said staff had to creatively bring together video clips of past performances and rewrite scripts.

However, Ray said Zoom has allowed WBTT to reach larger audiences. By the end of the year, WBTT will have given 35 performances in seven schools, reaching more than 1,660 students. It even is scheduled to perform for students in Kalamazoo, Mich.

“It’s a beautiful thing to reach so many students,” Ray said.

“Sometimes when you have a different voice coming in and saying something that they’ve been taught but in a different way with different context, it enhances the student experience.”

Jacobs said it is rewarding to know his company is making an impact in a way that wasn’t available when he was a child.

“The reason why we still are fighting racism in our country is because of lack of knowledge,” Jacobs said. “When there is understanding between the races, there is consistent communication, there is less fear of each other and less division. These programs are helping younger generations understand the differences and make a more inclusive world.”

The woman said the neighbor would come to her unit to try to talk about the situation, but the woman just wanted to be left alone. An officer spoke to the neighbor and advised her not to contact the woman in the future. Both parties agreed to leave the other alone.

TOUGH BREAK 11:54 p.m. — 900 block of University Parkway Dispute: An officer responded to a report regarding a dispute.

A man said he and his girlfriend were arguing because he attempted to break up with her. The man said he intended on staying in a hotel room for the night.

The woman said she planned to go back home for the night but would attempt to resolve their issues in the morning.

FURRY VENGEANCE 1:20 a.m. — 300 block of John Ringling Boulevard Dispute: The manager of a bar reported that two groups of customers got into a fight outside the business. The manager told an officer that one customer was making fun of a person wearing a yellow animal costume, repeatedly touching the costume even after being asked to stop. The person in the costume or a friend poured a drink on the customer’s head, which started the fight. Security at the bar forced everyone outside when the fight began.

The customer admitted to touching the costume and said she knew she was in the wrong, so

she apologized when the person in the costume got upset. She said another person poured the drink on her head and that the person in the costume attacked her. The customer said she ripped off the costume gloves, threw them on the ground and began stomping on them. One of the customer’s friends said the person in the costume had asked the customer not to touch it because it was expensive, and the customer responded by telling them they shouldn’t have worn it in public. Another person at the bar showed an officer cellphone footage of the customer walking up behind the person in the costume, grabbing and pulling on the mask and laughing prior to the fight. An officer determined the customer instigated the fight before engaging in it.

WAY AHEAD OF YOU 10:34 p.m. — 3300 block of Jolson Drive Noise complaint: Officers received a report regarding loud music. Once they arrived at the scene, they heard loud music and saw several men sitting in the front yard of a residence. The men turned off the music as the officers exited their cars.

rogressive Care Unit Nurse Jamie Florio was nervous when she first heard that Doctors Hospital had a patient with COVID-19 under her care.

She had just returned to work after maternity leave.

“I was certainly scared with my baby at home,” Florio said.

“Everyone has people at home, so

we were all nervous. We weren’t expecting anything to come back positive. Everything was changing, … so for me, and I’m sure other nurses, the fear of the unknown was major.”

That was a year ago.

Doctors Hospital diagnosed and began caring for the first COVID-19 patient in Florida on Feb. 29, 2020. At the time, it was one of about 65 cases in the U.S. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Schandorf-Lartey said most of those cases were citizens who had traveled outside the U.S., been diagnosed with COVID-19 and returned for treatment.

At the time, doctors had two criteria for determining COVID-19 cases: severe acute respiratory illness and a travel history from a place that is known to have COVID-19 cases.

However, the night before the hospital tested the Manatee County man, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention added a third category: a person

with severe acute respiratory illness with no known travel history.

“As you can imagine, that pretty much turned our world upside down,” Schandorf-Lartey said.

“That defines a lot of patients we typically treat, and we see those types of patients all the time.”

When the hospital tested its first patient, Schandorf-Lartey said he did not think the test was going to be positive. So when he got the results, he was shocked.

“I didn’t think we were going to have the first qualification here, so we were scrambling to decide, ‘What do we do? Where do we go?’” Schandorf-Lartey said.

The first thing the hospital had to do was define how to identify at-risk patients and how to quickly test them.

At that time, tests had to be sent to a state health lab, delaying results by days. Doctors had to take all necessary safety precautions with every patient who could have COVID-19 until they received the results.

About 60 staff members who came in contact with the first patient were sent home to quarantine. Now the hospital can test patients within 15 minutes.

CEO Robert Meade said that because Doctors Hospital was one of the first hospitals in the U.S. to receive a positive case, the CDC said it could not give out information. However, he still felt an obligation to tell in-hospital patients before they read it in a newspaper.

So the hospital wrote and handdelivered letters to each patient explaining the situation. That letter was leaked to the community, which caused a lot of backlash, Meade said.

as much heat, but we felt that was the right thing to do,” he said.

“The CDC was and is doing the best they possibly can. There is no anger toward the CDC. That was new to them as well.”

Although the 60-year-old Manatee County man was released March 6, 2020, Chief Nursing Officer Todd Haner said the hospital also had to figure out a way to keep its staff safe through employee and patient screening and the use of proper personal protective equipment because he knew more cases were on the way.

Haner said the hospital didn’t know how much PPE it would be able to acquire or how long it would last, so staff had to ration the supplies.

“As we get more people vaccinated, we achieve that herd immunity, and then we will be further along in fighting this virus.”

Throughout the past year, Haner said no staff members contracted COVID-19 while working.

Some contracted it in the community, though.

Meade said that because the hospital was the first in the state, leaders were able to help other hospitals prepare. However, as the first, it was difficult to keep up with the rapidly changing body of knowledge.

“We knew the disease was rapidly evolving, and the body of knowledge about it shifted very quickly, so you cannot assume that what was true yesterday was true today,” Schandorf-Lartey said. “One of the things that physicians pride themselves on is knowing what to do for their patient and having the skill to do it. This kind of proved us lacking in that respect.”

One of the unforeseen tolls the pandemic has taken is the emotional wear, registered nurse Rachael Herc said.

Families weren’t allowed to visit the hospital, so nurses gave not only physical care to their patients but also emotional support. She said the nurses tried to be the link between patients and families by facilitating Zooms or meetings through windows.

“You can only do so much,” Herc said. “But when you’re holding someone’s hand and watching the wife sit outside a window, it’s terrible, and it’s taken a toll on us.”

One patient who Herc helped recover was former doctor Bob Ross, who was hospitalized at the end of November.

“It was so bad. I’d never seen anyone so sick as I felt,” Ross said of COVID-19. “I thought death was a reasonable option.”

After several weeks in the hospital, Ross was discharged Dec. 24. Without the hospital staff, Ross said he would’ve “been long gone.”

lung damage, uses an inhaler and takes several pills a day to help regain his strength.

He said he feels about 35%40% back to full health. An avid hiker, he aims to walk a little bit farther each day — something he says wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Herc and other Doctors Hospital staff.

Although it’s been a stressful time for the hospital staff, Florio said it comes with the territory, and she’s grateful to help people.

“We’ve always understood that the patient is the priority,” Florio said. “As nurses, we came into this field to help patients, and we’ve continued to do so throughout the pandemic. We’re scared for our family at home, but our patients are in the hospitals without their families, so we’ve certainly tried to become that for them.”

Now doctors say there is less mortality thanks to several new ways to treat patients, such as with convalescent plasma, the antiviral medication remdesivir and the anti-inflammatory agent dexamethasone.

Schandorf-Lartey said the COVID-19 vaccine is the final push against the disease.

The hospital set up a vaccination clinic in December that gave 841 residents first and second doses. A second round of vaccinations began Friday morning.

“As we get more people vaccinated, we achieve that herd immunity, and then we will be further along in fighting this virus,” Haner said.

However, Meade said the public should still continue to mask up because they can still carry the virus even if they have been vaccinated.

Fixing up Grand Canal

S

iesta Key Association members continued the Grand Canal Regeneration Project by installing 35 mini reefs Feb. 25 to help purify the Siesta Key waters.

Members watched as the reefs — which attract small fish and marine life that filter and add oxygen to the water — beneath the docks of various Siesta Key homes. The hope is these reefs and the subsequent marine life will result in clearer waters in the canal. The association members plan to install more reefs soon.

Golf stars shine in the area

T

he world came to the Sarasota-Bradenton area last weekend, and by most accounts, the world was impressed.

The PGA Tour’s World Golf Championships at The Concession was played at the Lakewood Ranch golf course at the eastern end of University Parkway, bringing with it most of the professional golf universe’s top names.

“I’ve always been a big fan of a course that, as I say, you can’t fake it,” second-place finisher Billy Horschel said. “Maybe you can fake it one or two days, but you can’t fake it for four days. And this is one of those courses.”

Tournament Director Meghan Costello said she had a great experience working with The Concession and local organizations despite the shortened time to plan the event after the PGA moved the event from Mexico City.

“It’s always challenging coming to a new site and starting fresh,” Costello said. “Getting volunteers, trying to do operational layouts, that sort of thing. But the team here has been awesome to work with. We’ve had a lot of phone calls. They’re probably sick of me.”

he challenge in front of the Cardinal Mooney High girls basketball team is known, and it is large.

The Cougars (20-8) are the underdogs in Friday’s Class 3A state title game against Miami Country Day (22-3) at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland. Not only is MCD ranked first in 3A (and 19th in the nation) by MaxPreps, but the school also won six straight titles from 2014-2019 before losing in the semifinals last season.

Mooney is making its first-ever trip to the state title game. No matter what happens, sophomore forward Jordyn Byrd said, it’s something the team will remember forever.

Don’t mistake the Cougars’ understanding of their situation as doubt, though. Byrd said she believes the key to the game will be the Cougars’ defense.

“We’re going to score,” Byrd said. “We have scorers on our team. We just have to stop the other team.”

MCD senior forward Andrea Daley, a George Washington signee, averages 19 points and 10.8 rebounds a game, while freshman forward Kayla Nelms adds 11.4 points and 7.2 rebounds.

But Daley and Nelms are 6-foot and 6-foot-1 respectively. Byrd is 6-foot-4. If Byrd, who averages 14.7 points and 11.7 rebounds a game, can get the duo uncomfortable in the paint, Mooney has a chance.

In addition to Byrd, sophomore guard Olivia Davis averages 15.5 points a game, and freshman forward Kennedy McClain averages 9.5.

Double play Rams baseball combines high talent with tons of fun.

I

t’s always the ping of the bat that first does it.

During every offseason, I slowly forget what makes high school baseball great, and every year I remember when I cover my first game. The ping is the initial reminder. Nothing else in sports sounds like that. There are things that are close — a shot hitting a hockey post, for instance. But nothing that clamorous, nothing that announces its presence and demands attention, nothing that filled with the hope that it leads to something good.

There weren’t that many pings during Riverview High’s 2-0 home win against Venice High on Tuesday. But Rams junior infielder Christopher “Pip” Smalley — and what a name/ nickname combination that is, especially for someone who is 6-foot-2, according to his Perfect Game profile — had a great one when he smashed a triple in the second inning. Smalley, who is committed to Stetson University, would score on a sacrifice fly from senior catcher Clement Febus to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.

It stayed 1-0 for a long time.

Rams pitcher Karson Ligon, a University of Miami signee, was mowing down Venice batters like they were the grass on his front lawn. Ligon would throw

a complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts, allowing two hits and a walk. As I said, the ping is the initial reminder, but there are others, too, such as a fastball hitting a catcher’s mitt square. I heard that one quite a bit Tuesday; Ligon’s performance was impressive.

Other sounds also take me back to my playing days, such as the faux applause the Rams gave when Venice decided to make its third pitching chance of the sixth inning. That made me laugh.

Every sport has cheers and jeers, but only in baseball is it done so openly — not with intent to hurt but to keep the energy high.

It becomes its own art form, as does the advice given by teammates during at-bats. “You didn’t want that one anyway,” is a favorite, especially after a swing. So is “Hang in there,” as if the hitter has any other choice.

The Rams added another run in the sixth inning when Smalley singled to left, scoring junior Chris Barr. (Another good ping.)

Riverview won 2-0, moving its record to 4-2. Coach Jeremy Schmidt said the team’s pitching and defense is ahead of its offense right now, as sometimes happens. That’s OK because the Rams’ pitching and defense is tough to beat, allowing 15 runs in six games, or 2.5 runs per game.

Karson Ligon is a senior pitcher on the Riverview High baseball team. Ligon threw a complete game shutout March 2 in the Rams’ 2-0 win at home against Venice High. Rams Coach Jeremy Schmidt said Ligon threw 71 of his 103 pitches for strikes. Ligon signed with the University of Miami in November.

When did you start playing baseball?

I started playing at 6 years old.

I was playing football, and my dad, [Jeff], thought I had a strong arm. He thought I should try baseball, so I did.

What is the appeal to you?

I think baseball is the hardest game in the world, other than golf maybe. Going out and mastering the craft, especially pitching, is tough to do. Battling against good hitters is probably the most fun thing in the world.

JOHN AND CHARLES RINGLING The Ringling Brothers both had noticeable contributions across Sarasota, including St. Armands Circle, local museums and schools along with the financial development of Sarasota’s downtown in the 1920s.

BERTHA PALMER Bertha Palmer brought plenty of business activity, cultural progression and clout to Sarasota starting in 1910. Her involvement and advocacy for Sarasota helped spur the developing area and bring it to the arts and cultural area it is today.

History is on the minds of staff at the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce as the organization marks its 100th anniversary.

To celebrate, the chamber recently unveiled a pair of 30-foot high murals honoring eight landmark figures in the city’s history.

The artwork, designed in collaboration with members of the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County and the Ringling College of Art and Design, is meant to highlight those who helped push Sarasota to become a prominent economic and artistic space. “[We wanted] something that represents history but also the future of where the chamber is headed,” Chamber CEO and President Heather Kasten said.

“It’s just such a great representation of the history that’s helped us to build this community.”

The chamber’s east wall now has a mural of John and Charles Ringling, cultural advocates Bertha Palmer and A.B. Edwards, influential builder Owen Burns, and Newtown founder Lewis Colson. The west wall has “Father of Sarasota” John Hamilton Gillespie, educator Emma Booker

Each mural features Sarasota staples, such as the Ca’ d’Zan, Verona Hotel, Sarasota County Courthouse and beaches.

Talk about the mural started last summer, when Kasten and Jim Shirley, the executive director of the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County, outlined an idea of what kind of collection

of people would be painted for the piece. The cultural alliance reached out to local artists and eventually chose Ringling College professor Matt Myers to create the murals.

Shirley and staff consulted with local historians to choose a diverse group of men and women.

Myers decided A.B. Edwards, a Sarasota native who often praised his home’s many qualities, would be the first person who would have to be in the mural.

“It’s interesting that it all trickles down from one person saying: ‘I like it here. I’m going to encourage people to come down because I think they’ll like it too,’” Myers said. “That is something that happens today. But to me, you know, to be able to put your finger on it and say 100 years ago somebody was doing that exact same thing, … [Edwards’s] act of commitment to Sarasota led to so many big events.”

Photos of the subjects weren’t always easy to find, but Myers still managed to add some interpretive flair. John Hamilton Gillespie, a passionate advocate for golf in Sarasota, is painted in his native Scottish attire with a golf club.

“For me as an artist playing with composition, it was, ‘How can I group people, and how can I bring these people out of history, so it’s not just putting up an old sepia tone photograph?’” Myers said.

LEWIS COLSON Lewis Colson, who was formerly enslaved, arrived in 1884 as part of a surveying crew hired

by Florida Mortgage and Investment Co. He is credited planting the first stake in the center of Sarasota’s Five Points and, with his wife, Irene, established Overtown in 1897, Sarasota’s first Black community.

A.B. EDWARDS A.B. Edwards advocated for Sarasota’s success in its early days. The Sarasota native wrote letters to people who were known to be interested in Florida extolling the virtues of his home city.

That approach attracted Bertha Palmer to visit the city. He also founded Myakka State Park in the 1930s.

JOHN HAMILTON GILLESPIE John Gillespie, known as the Father of Sarasota, arrived from Scotland in 1886. Among his accomplishments were clearing land for Main Street and serving as Sarasota mayor for six terms. Gillespie was also well known for introducing the game of golf to the city.

ROSE WILSON Rose Wilson and her husband established The Sarasota Times, and she assumed control as sole editor following his death. She was a fierce advocate for women’s rights and was considered to be the first woman to vote in Sarasota County.

EMMA BOOKER Emma Booker arrived in a segregated Sarasota in 1914 and became principal of Sarasota Grammar by 1923. She was a notable figure in encouraging Black citizens in Sarasota to become educators themselves, and she went on to earn her bachelor’s degree two years before her death in 1937.

Jewish Federation hosts film fest

T

he Mort Skirboll Jewish Film Festival of Sarasota-Manatee started in earnest March 1 with a drive-in movie event held at the Sarasota Art Museum.

The event had Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee supporters parking their cars and picking up food from Michael’s On East for a drive-in movie night, where they watched the film “Abe,” a 2019 comedy about a young boy from Brooklyn who cooks in an attempt to bring together his family made up of Israelis and Palestinians.

The 12th annual festival — named this year in honor of Mort Skirboll — will run through March 25 and have 21 films available to watch online. Skirboll, who died in 2020, was known for his penchant for kindness and humor.

An unforgettable impression DANCE CRITIC

T

he Sarasota Ballet’s Digital Program 5, released last weekend, featured ballets from past and present choreographers. George Balanchine’s “Donizetti Variations” and Ricardo Graziano’s “Amorosa” differ in style but are similar in their choreographic sensations.

“Donizetti Variations,” first performed by the New York City Ballet in 1960, is a plotless ballet set to music by Gaetano Donizetti. The choreography reflects aspects of the August Bournonville style with a Balanchine flair. Principal couple Katelyn May and Yuri Marques danced with attack and precision during the pas de deux and solo sections. May’s musicality was spot on during her variation, and Marques nailed his turning sequences.

The ensemble, consisting of six women and three men, also brought attack and infectious energy. The group joyfully executed the challenging and quick footwork while creating beautiful symmetry. Although the ballet has no narrative, there was a moment of humor as one of the ensemble woman, Kelly Wil-

One of the benefits of the digital programming has been the behind-the-scenes rehearsals, interviews with repetiteurs and conversations with the dancers.

Program 5 includes an interview with Director Iain Webb and resident choreographer Ricardo Graziano. They discuss how Graziano (with a nudge from Webb) began his choreographic career and his inspiration for “Amorosa.”

The curtain opens on “Amorosa” with one woman, Danielle Brown, wearing a red strapless gown and holding a rose. Her gestures to the Vivialdi music immediately set the romantic tone Graziano envisioned.

Couples began to enter and exit the stage — the men showing strength, the women sensuality — moving beautifully together. The entire cast danced with passion and grace with Ivan Spitale standing out among the men and Brown among the woman. The final pas de deux with Brown and Ricardo Rhodes, ending with rose petals falling to the floor, was unforgettable.

Webb mentioned in the interview with Graziano that an important part of The Sarasota Ballet is preserving choreography of the past and giving opportunities to choreographers.

These opportunities for new choreography will help shape the (very bright) future of the company and the entire art form.

there [are] very few operating services putting performances on,” Mitchell said. “With so many artists around the world looking for these kinds of spaces, we’re lucky here in Sarasota.”

The lineup includes a mix of ground and aerial acts performing solo and as duos. Alanna Baker, who toured with the “OVO” production, will put on an aerial lyra hoop show. Oli Poitras plans to scale a Chinese pole and execute dazzling moves, while duo Marie-Lee Gilbert and Philippe Bélanger will put on a show with their unicycle act. Sarasota figure Joseph Bauer Jr. is the show’s ringmaster.

“Since the industry shut down, everyone’s been building their own personalized acts,” Trull said. “So a lot of these will be some of the first places that [the performers] test them out with an audience.”

More than just a collection of acts, Reis, Vargas and Trull have paid attention to each act’s pacing and energy with hopes of taking audiences through a beginning, a middle and an end.

“It’s not rocket science; it’s a feeling,” he said. “You just feel it, and you place the energy in the right place.”

he pandemic has rolled on into 2021 and has continued to affect local arts and performance groups, and the Circus Arts Conservatory is no exception.

The planned Big Top 2021 season was canceled in January, but CEO Pedro Reis and visiting performer Darren Trull still have a few tricks up their sleeves.

A circus benefit show called “Prevail!” will run March 5-7 at the Sailor Circus Arena on Bahia Vista Street and return the following weekend for a total of 10 performances.

Reis has spearheaded countless shows in his career and said “Prevail!” came together through conversations with staff and Trull, an aerial-strap performer who lives in Canada.

He started talking to Reis about training students while staying with his parents in Sarasota, but the conversation evolved into a new show.

Coach Miguel Vargas and Trull assembled a series of performers from across the country and throughout the world, many of whom have performed with Cirque du Soleil.

Circus Arts Conservatory Managing Director Jennifer Mitchell said the venue was also a big draw. The 10 performers will put on a show from the Sailor Circus Arena, with standard social distancing rules in place that include masks and limited seating capacity. The show will be streamed for digital viewers starting March 12.
