Banding together
The Music Compound school takes time to teach kids about all manner of musical sounds and styles and has quite a few instructors to do just that. Executive Director Jenny Townsend recently brought together 18 students and staff members at the school for an art project that celebrated the power of music and their distinct contributions. The staff painted a wall mural at the school that depicts a number of musical notes and characters with a message of, “Where words fail, music speaks.” Staff visited in groups to paint the mural in an array of reds, blacks and other colors. Townsend said it was important to have each staff members contribute and leave their mark on the piece.

Mayor, meet mayors Mayor Erik Arroyo has kept busy during his tenure in Sarasota, but that schedule hasn’t slowed when he’s gone abroad. During a trip to Greece with his wife, Victoria, and friends, Arroyo took time to meet with the mayors of two Greek cities. Arroyo had planned his meeting with Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis of Athens in advance but met with Myokonos Mayor Konstantinos Koukas (above, with Victoria and Erik Arroyo). in a more casual fashion: He called up the mayor’s office while in town and the two met shortly thereafter. Arroyo said it was interesting and beneficial to speak with Koukas and see how their government balanced their population, as well as taking care of the area’s pristine beaches.
