Landing mishap prompts closure

“We have the best beach in the country here, if not the world. ”

A wheels-up landing by a twinengine Beechcraft King Air 350 on Tuesday afternoon prompted Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport to close its main runway for a few hours, resulting in airline arrival and departure delays.

“The good news is no one was hurt,” Airport CEO Rick Piccolo said.

“But we have an aircraft sitting on its belly off the runway, so we need to get that cleaned up.”

Piccolo said the aircraft’s landing gear collapsed, sending the plane skidding along the runway, then off the pavement.

Arriving flights were diverted to other airports following the incident.

Normal operations resumed around 7 p.m.

Voters who want to request a ballot by mail for a pair of Sarasota County referendums in March have until this weekend to do so, the Sarasota supervisor of elections said.

Any registered voter may request a vote-by-mail ballot at SarasotaVotes.gov/VotebyMail or by calling 861-8618 by 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26.

“This deadline ensures enough time for the voter to receive and mark the vote-by-mail ballot and return it so that it reaches the elections office in time to be counted,” Supervisor of Elections Ron Turner said in a statement. “Voted ballots may be returned by mail or in person but must be received in the elections office by 7 p.m. election night to be counted.”

The cost to return a ballot by mail for the March 8 referendums is one Forever stamp or 58-cent postage.

In-person early voting for the optional 1-mill property tax for Sarasota County Schools and a vote on single-member voting districts for the County Commission is underway.

NOT FAR AWAY A new agreement between a private owner and the same land-conservation organization working with the adjacent Quads parcels will set aside nearly 50 acres of green space just east of Celery Fields.

The Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast announced in January the agreement to protect 48.44 acres in perpetuity. The announcement said the landowner, whom the foundation didn’t identify, finalized the conservation easement agreement on Dec. 30.

“One thing we do lack is forest and trees,” Dubi said. “The whole idea was to create that habitat to increase biodiversity.”

The retention pond on the northeast corner will stay largely as it is now, though “more beautiful and natural,” Johnson said, adding that the soil scooped out to create the pond caused the surrounding topography to become higher and drier than the Celery Fields land.

“It’s turned out the Celery Fields is nationally known and internationally known as a birding hot spot,” Dubi said. “What we hope to accomplish is attracting other birds that don’t normally come to the Celery Fields and to create a migratory stopover.”

That’s the goal of the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, Sarasota Audubon and county leaders in reimagining the future of the so-called Quads, a collection of properties once considered surplus land at the four corners of Palmer Boulevard and Apex Road, within sight of Interstate 75.

Although no approvals or permits have been issued for construction – that could happen by September – and fundraising is just getting started, the two nonprofits last weekend held an open house at Celery Fields to showcase concepts for the 33 acres and kick off public awareness.

Foot traffic at the open house was brisk at the Audubon Society’s Nature Center as visitors stopped in to chat with representatives of both organizations and look over illustrations of proposed new features.

Envisioned improvements include extensive plantings, meadows, woodlands, trails, high and low points of terrain along a stream, picnic areas, ADA-compliant walkways, a bird blind/observation platform, facilities, a discovery area for kids and more, a news release said.

The northwest Quad will remain as is, with a new fire station and space for more. The other three sections are the focus of conservation.

PUBLIC SENTIMENT

In 2019, as months and months of public sentiment swelled against the proposed sale and private development, Christine Johnson of the Conservation Foundation and Jeanne Dubi of the Audubon Society approached the county with the idea to set aside two of the parcels for conservation in perpetuity.

son said.

In 2020, commissioners placed a conservation easement over the southwest, southeast and northeast parcels, and Audubon and the foundation agreed on a partnership.

“We conserve it; Audubon is going to manage it,” Johnson said. “We’re fundraising together for this vision of re-wilding the Quads.”

Johnson said the project would take 12 to 14 months to build if fundraising is successful enough to avoid phased-in construction.

Willis Smith Construction, Kimley-Horn Planning and Design and Progressive Water Resources are also

part of the effort. Under optimum fundraising and permitting circumstances, work could begin in roughly a year. Once finished, the Quads park would seamlessly link with facilities at Celery Fields, though the habitats and wildlife they attract will be entirely separate.

Dubi said Celery Fields is low and swampy, conditions that have led the 440 acres to gain international acclaim with bird-watchers. The Quads land south of Palmer Boulevard lends itself to a higher-elevation woodland habitat that would lure a different set of migratory visitors, both feathered and the kind

She said birds all over the world are in decline from factors like habitat loss but that it’s encouraging to see so many species flock to New York’s Central Park. “We can do the same thing.”

Both Dubi and Johnson emphasized that it was grassroots opposition to a development proposal on the site in 2018 that launched the entire conservation effort, and it would take the same kind of community support to fuel a successful fundraising campaign. Because the plans are not final, there is no fundraising goal, but Johnson said it would be “more than a few million dollars.”

“We need the grassroots people,” Dubi said. “The grassroots people started this all. They were the ones who said to the county, ‘Don’t sell that land. Save that land.’ And we were able to come up with a solution.”

The Conservation Foundation is also working with the city of Sarasota on its initiative to remake the Bobby Jones Golf Course. Groundbreaking is set for March 4 to begin not only restoring the closed municipal golf layout to its original design by famed architect Donald Ross but also to set aside about 108 acres as a nature park in perpetuity.

At the same time the city approved plans, it also approved a $20 million bond to finance golf course construction and the framework for the nature park’s wetlands. Johnson said she hopes to be finished fundraising for the Quads by the time her organization must gear up to raise money for the second phase of nature park construction, which would include more granular work and the nature park’s amenities.

Johnson said the efforts to conserve green space is a positive development for the entire community and one that couldn’t happen without the community.

“They didn’t know how to make it happen; they didn’t know how to design it, but that’s what we do,” she said. “But we couldn’t do it without the community. And the community couldn’t do it without us. Now, to make this all a reality, we’re asking the community to help.”

ast week, Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Director Nicole Rissler and County Commissioner Christian Ziegler introduced the Nora Patterson Park Improvement Project, which will bring a new observation deck and restroom facility to the park.

Renamed from Bay Island Park in 2015, the public space that overlooks Roberts and Sarasota bays has grown in popularity, according to Rissler.

The improvement project is expected to be completed by the fall.

“Many of you know this park as a great spot for fishing and picnicking,” Rissler said. “As the popularity of this park has risen, so have our community’s needs within this park.”

Adjacent to the Siesta Key side of the north drawbridge, Nora Patterson Park offers a beautiful view of the bays. With the coming elevated observation deck, the view could get even clearer for park visitors.

Ziegler also voiced excitement about the project. He called the park a gateway to Siesta Key and praised the accessibility the park provides.

“This will continue to complement our beach on Siesta Key,” Ziegler said. “We have the best beach in the country here, if not the world. When complete, the observation deck and recreational areas will welcome even more users to the park.”

The improved restrooms could also make the park more useful for more visitors. The current temporary restroom facility will be replaced by two permanent family-style restrooms.

During Ziegler’s presentation at the park, he explained that he had met a man who was recovering from cancer. The man told him that he uses the park rather than Siesta

Key Beach because the walk from the parking lot to the water is much shorter at the park.

“This man had a tough time walking from the parking lot to the beaches, so he and his wife come here,” Ziegler said. “They are very excited about the restrooms. It means they can come to the park and enjoy it longer, and I think they are just two of many who feel that way.”

In addition to the observation deck and restrooms, the project will bring a new equipment storage unit to the park and other general improvements, including a gate at the entrance. The design of the improvements is reminiscent of pavilion building at Siesta Beach.

Although the park is in the city, it is county operated.

Nora Patterson, the former county and city commissioner for whom the park is named, also spoke at the project introduction event. She spoke humbly but with pride about what the park will become in the future.

“The important thing is that this park will fulfill the needs and expectations of many people in the city and the county who support conservation of lands for the public to own and enjoy,” Patterson said. “This property is enjoyed by many people and is now going to become even more appreciated.”

Work to upgrade facilities is underway at Nora Patterson Park.

New lanes, extensions possible for Legacy Trail A $250,000 donation from Friends of Legacy Trail will help pay for a second lane to separate walkers from riders on the trail’s most urban stretch.

ith the growth and popularity of the Legacy Trail, multiple improvements have been made possible with a $250,000 donation from the Friends of Legacy Trail to Sarasota County.

The donation is expected to help fund a 4-mile parallel lane, also known as a bifurcated trail, along the trail’s most urban stretch. Rather than sharing the current 12-foot lane, trail users would be separated by the pace at which they travel.

“We have seen exponential growth the last several years,” Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Director Nicole Rissler said. “We knew we had to think ahead when it came to carrying capacity, reducing user conflict and increasing safety.”

Legacy Trail, which has been open to cyclists, walkers and runners since 2008, has grown in popularity yearly, according to Louis Kosiba, president of the Friends of Legacy Trail. In 2021, the trail saw 479,000 unique visitors and could see many more as improvements are made.

Friends of Legacy Trail, a local nonprofit that has supported the trail, has added water fountains, signage and bike repair stations. Kosiba said the bifurcated trail could be a monumental improvement.

“We’re working with the county to put a plan together, and the county is working on a grant,” Kosiba said.

“Hopefully, the grant will be received late this summer or early in the fall.

not, it is my understanding that the county’s going forward with building the parallel trail.”

While the bifurcated trail has yet to be built, designers saw it as a possibility and built the trail accordingly.

The current trail was built slightly off-center to make an additional lane easier to construct.

A bifurcated trail could make traffic flow more smoothly and improve safety on and near the trail. Rural areas of the trail might not need additional lanes, signage or improvements, but the trail’s environment changes north of Clark Road.

“The trail starts in Venice, and

that’s fairly rural. It’s widely used, but there’s currently not a lot of housing along it,” Kosiba said. “But then you get into a more urban area for about four miles. There’s lots of communities, children and walkers, and that’s where the work would be done.”

In addition to the bifurcated trail, the $250,000 donation will directly lead to the building of a rest station at Phillippi Creek. Legacy Trail, a county-owned park, has also benefited from donations and contributions from Friends of Sarasota County Parks, Sarasota-Manatee Bicycle Club and private citizens.

The $250,000 donation and other funds have also contributed to the extension of Legacy Trail to the city of North Port. Kosiba anticipated the trail will be extended to North Port by the fall.

“The referendum did much more than extend the trail north,” Kosiba said. “It’s also providing connectivity to North Port, and that’s exciting.

A lot of good things are happening, and people just really enjoy using this trail.”

Meanwhile, a ribbon-cutting for a new stretch of Legacy Trail from Payne Park to Bahia Vista Street is set for March 3. When completed,

the Legacy Trail will extend from northern Sarasota to North Port.

Kosiba, who moved to Sarasota in 2017, said he has enjoyed watching the Legacy Trail evolve. He said that he believes the trail has become a reason for people to move to the area after the COVID-19 pandemic created a new desire to experience nature.

“Whether they’re Canadians or from the Northeast, they really enjoy the trail. It’s well-maintained and well-designed,” Kosiba said.

“There’s people relocating into subdivisions to live close to Legacy Trail so they can go out and bicycle.”

A new trailhead at Webber Street, also known as Sarasota Springs, is being constructed and also is expected to open on March 3.

Additional safety improvements have also been scheduled for the coming years. One focus of Friends of Legacy Trail is building additional bridges at busy intersections, including Clark Road and Bee Ridge.

Legacy Trail has already got bridges across U.S. 41 and Laurel Road.

“Getting cyclists off and over those busy streets will be a real plus not only for the cyclists, runners, joggers and skateboarders, but also for vehicular traffic,” Kosiba said.

“Vehicles wouldn’t have to stop for trail users, and that’s super exciting.”

The new bridges are expected to be completed in 2024. More information about the Friends of Legacy Trail can be found on its website at FriendsofLegacyTrail.org.

“You can walk a mile or bike for 18 miles. It’s just a very enjoyable interaction with nature,” Kosiba said. “It’s been a neat thing to see the trail grow and develop and evolve. The people use it, and the people seem to love it.”

“We’re also very grateful for the taxpayers who have paid for this trail and extended it,” Kosiba continued.

“Really, they’re the real heroes of this story.”

St. Armands carousel proposal has some residents reeling Sarasota city commissioners hear presentation from a company that has installed similar attractions in other cities.

en Horvat, a representative of Ride Entertainment, spoke to city commissioners Tuesday afternoon about adding a carousel to St. Armands Circle Park, an idea that drew some positive response from the dais but not area residents.

The idea was proposed in February 2021 and revisited in June 2021.

Horvat gave additional details about the carousel on Tuesday, calling it a revenue opportunity for the city and its park systems.

“Our goal with this project is to create a wonderful entertainment opportunity that complements the city and brings awesome entertainment to all parties,” Harvat said. “It would extend the stay of visitors to the Circle and to activate a beautiful park.”

Ride Entertainment has developed similar attractions in other cities.

The company’s high-end carousels cost as much as $5 million.

Members of the St. Armands Residents Association sent a letter to City Hall saying the attraction would not be welcome and that an association survey indicated that 92% of respondents did not support the idea.

Horvat said Ride Entertainment would be responsible for installation, marketing, payroll, ride operation, supplies, insurance, utilities and security. She emphasized that the carousel proposed for St. Armands Circle Park would be circus themed to fit the landscape.

“We would source the right carousel to fit the brand of St. Armands Circle,” Horvat said. “We know how important the brand is and how groups have worked to maintain the brand and its consistency on the

circle. We want to help promote it.”

If approved, the carousel would operate on a set schedule and be available for private rental. A system informing customers of their ride time would be put into place to minimize traffic and parking issues.

“We don’t believe people will come to the Circle just for the carousel,” Horvat said. “It’s supposed to be something that answers the need of many families. It would take up space that’s currently unusable.”

Horvat said additional ground measurements and tests are needed to ensure safety and ample space for the carousel. One issue she noted is that the proposed area for a queue currently holds standing water, which might mean putting the carousel on a pedestal.

While creating an appropriate theme for the carousel is a priority according to Horvat, disrupting the park’s current atmosphere was brought up by Tom Leonard, a property owner on St. Armands Circle.

“The Business Improvement District (BID) is looking to add condo-

miniums on the Circle, and I think that’s going to be approved,” Leonard said. “If you put a carousel in the park, who is going to want to listen to that through their windows?”

Amplified music was a top concern for Leonard, but he also said the carousel would be a major investment with a fixed and limited use. With the prime location of St. Armands Circle, Leonard worried that if it became undesirable the city would be stuck with it for many years.

He also said the carousel would be disruptive to parkgoers seeking a peaceful experience. He cited a lack of financial planning for the carousel’s parking lot and how it would financially benefit the city.

“The problem is that this isn’t something we can try for a year and give it back,” Leonard said. “This carousel is a multimillion-dollar investment that could be there for 50 years. We’d have to live with this thing.”

Eight citizens spoke either against the carousel or asked for further study and evaluation before approv-

ing its construction. Leonard suggested using a different location in Sarasota if the carousel must be built.

Commissioner Hagen Brody acknowledged the parking issues the carousel could bring to St. Armands Circle but said he liked the idea. The carousel could bring revenue and more visitors to the area.

“You live in a destination, and I think there are some side effects to that. But I like the idea,” Brody said.

“We’ve had to try to up the game of St. Armands by investing in the beach, streetscapes and sidewalks.

We want to raise the game.”

“I want to be perfectly clear with a vision for that,” Brody continued.

“What we do in St. Armands has to be top of the line in a beautiful high-end area. I understand people not wanting the side effects of that, but there’s lots of benefits that come with this opportunity.”

‘Yes’ on the March 8 votes Studies show that you get the same government with single-member districts as countywide elections. But with the latter, you get less self-serving political dealmaking.

F

or our Sarasota County readers and voters, if you haven’t already mailed in your ballot or voted early, this is a kind reminder that March 8 is election day for two referendum questions.

We opined on the two questions earlier this month, recommending “yes” votes on both.

The school tax question is one that would be almost sacrilegious to urge rejection. As its proponents try to drum into our heads, this is not a new tax. Sarasota property owners have been paying this 1-mill tax since 2002. And you can make a convincing case that the money raised from this tax has been a critical factor in the Sarasota County School District consistently earning an “A” grade for its schools.

If you want to go back 20 years to this tax’s origin, some of you might remember it came after the 2000 dotcom recession. State coffers suffered then, and education funding from the Legislature wasn’t enough for Sarasota schools to offer some of the extras that made it a topperforming district in the state.

Sarasota County voters didn’t hesitate. The quality of the county’s schools has always been important, so voters approved the extra 1 mill. That money is now used for learning programs that help prevent struggling kids from sliding back during the summer, to pay teacher salaries and keep arts offerings (music, dance, art) in the curricula, and to keep an extra 30 minutes of classroom instruction per day.

All to the good of the cause.

So even if you’re not a fan of state-controlled education (which we are not), Sarasota County public schools have delivered a good return on that investment for taxpayers.

That one, as they say, is a “nobrainer.”

The other question is far less definitive on whether you color the “yes” or “no” bubble on the ballot.

The question is whether the Sarasota County commissioners should be elected from single-member districts or in countywide elections.

Since we addressed this question Feb. 3, we’ve watched and read the commentaries in other media.

No surprise, they argued fervently against countywide elections and in favor of keeping single-member districts. And, of course, they trotted out the usual moth-eaten arguments: Single-member commissioners will be more responsive and accountable to their voters. Singlemember districts will make it less costly for people to run for office, thus attracting more candidates.

it less likely that big-money developers will stack the commission with their puppets.

Blah, blah, blah.

Or turn those arguments around.

They also are saying commissioners elected countywide will be less accountable and responsive. Only wealthy politically connected people will be able to afford to run for office. And developers will control the commissioners, with the goal of approving uncontrolled growth.

Blah, blah, blah.

Sorry to break the news, but you know what? It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter whether our county commissioners come from singlemember districts or from countywide elections.

Adrian Moore, vice president of the Reason Foundation and a regular contributor to this page, told us recently researchers have conducted all kinds of studies over the years to determine whether there is empirical evidence signifying which model produces better government.

There isn’t. The results basically conclude that it doesn’t matter. You get the same kind of governance under either model. The difference basically comes down to the individual in office.

Intuition, of course, makes you think of the bromide that government is best closest to the people — the argument that would support keeping single-member districts.

We all believe that. But here are two compelling reasons for countywide election of commissioners: n We want the best people for the job, be they from North Port, Venice or Sarasota. You don’t get that choice with single-member districts. n Politicians are all the same.

The will to end inflation A

ffordable housing. It’s the disease that is never cured.

And now it’s like a pandemic virus, spreading uncontrollably and taking an ever-greater toll — not on the elderly with comorbidities, but on healthy 20- and 30-year-olds.

When the Economic Development Corp. of Sarasota County surveyed its members recently on their top concerns, the issue that topped the list for business owners and CEOs: affordable housing for employees.

Indeed, in our own company’s case, we have had newly hired employees from out of town unable to find livable, safe, affordable and available apartments — and then decline to take the job. Existing Observer associates are experiencing 30% increases in their monthly rental rates.

This problem is especially acute in the city of Sarasota, but it is spreading regionally and happening all over the United States.

Why? As Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Jen Psaki, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and the rest of the D.C. dopes would say: It must be those greedy landlords. They’re like

the meat conglomerates, oil companies and grocery store owners.

The whole lot of those D.C. imbeciles always blame the rising prices that follow inflation on what Sanders’ tweeted: “corporate greed, collusion and profiteering.”

They never, never, never take responsibility for their own actions.

They are to blame for all of the rising prices. No one else.

But they are clueless that inflation is not the act of businesses raising prices. Inflation is the act of increasing the supply of dollars faster than the economy is growing.

Apartment landlords aren’t the bad guys, nor are the oil company executives, beef packers or grocery store owners.

What did the Washington politicians think was going to happen when the federal government printed $5 trillion of new money and handed it out to everyone in 2020 and 2021? All of a sudden people had money to buy at a time when there were shortages of goods. Demand outstripped supply.

Duh. Prices go up.

The big question now is: How will the rise in prices stop?

Westbound traffic comes to a halt daily from 10 a.m. until about 7 p.m. on Fruitville Road from Orange Avenue to Tamiami Trail.

TOM BARWIN GETS THE LAST LAUGH Nice job, Tom. You did it. You got what you wanted — and the last laugh.

Many of our readers might remember Tom Barwin, former Sarasota city manager. A few years back he and his band of merry planners were all about “walkability” and bike lanes for the areas in and around downtown Sarasota.

One of their brilliant new urban ideas was to tear up Fruitville Road from, say, Orange Avenue to Tamiami Trail and redesign it so it would be reduced to one lane and the speed limit would be reduced to 25 mph, making that whole stretch much more accommodating to pedestrians and bicyclists.

Downtown Sarasota was to be the city of urban walkers with their fanny packs and golden doodles.

One of the terms they often used was “traffic calming.” That was the rationale for all of the roundabouts. Barwin and his band wanted to calm the traffic. Slow it down on Tamiami Trail, Bayfront and Fruitville.

The idea of traffic calming on Fruitville, however, brought an eruption of vocal opposition from

the barrier islands and others.

“No way!” they said. Fruitville to Interstate 75 is the main evacuation route in the event of hurricane, not to mention the primary artery for most downtown and barrier island residents to get to the interstate on normal days.

After the onslaught of opposition to “calming” and turning Fruitville to one lane, Barwin shelved the plan.

Well, Barwin got what he wanted. He “calmed” the traffic on Fruitville all right. He calmed it so much he brought it to a halt. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., traffic is bumper to bumper and inches along from Orange Avenue to Tamiami Trail.

The traffic is calm, but the motorists are not.

This, of course, is season.

But as the Quay condos and Rosemary District apartments continue to go up and downtown population increases, Barwin’s successor, Marlon Brown, and the Florida Department of Transportation should be planning now how to fix the traffic disasters at the roundabout rodeos.

There is nothing calming about them at all.

Their top priority is getting reelected, and they all learn quickly that politics is rooted in making behind-the-scenes deals. With single-member districts, the commissioners become incentivized to spend money on projects that improve their districts. “Bring home the bacon.” That wins votes — more so than thinking foremost about the larger picture of what is best for all county taxpayers.

Likewise, we see this in Tallahassee every session. They call it horse trading. Every lawmaker represents a district that has a pet project that

requires funding. So the trading starts on Day One of the session: “You support my district’s baseball stadium; I’ll support your district’s sewer replacement project.”

It’s one of the dark realities of politics.

With countywide elections, there will be horse trading, yes, but not the blatant kind that results in “Bridges to Nowhere.”

Once again …

We recommend: Yes on both questions March 8.

The great economic journalist Henry Hazlitt (1894-1993) wrote a book published in 1960 called “What You Should Know about Inflation.” Chapter 6 is entitled: “The Cure for Inflation.”

On paper, the cure is simple. The politicians, however, don’t have the courage to do it. Hazlitt wrote: “The cure for inflation, like most cures, consists chiefly in removal of the cause. The cause of inflation is the increase of money and credit.

The cure is to stop increasing money and credit. The cure for inflation, in brief, is to stop inflating. It is as simple as that … .

“Let us begin with the Federal budget. It is next to impossible to avoid inflation with a continuing heavy deficit. That deficit is almost certain to be financed by inflationary means — i.e., by directly or indirectly printing more money.

“The remedy for huge governmental expenditures is therefore not equally huge taxes, but a halt to reckless spending.”

Ha! Good luck with that. …

Hazlitt goes on: “On the monetary side, the Treasury and the Federal Reserve System must stop creating artificially cheap money; i.e., they must stop arbitrarily holding down interest rates.

“The Federal Reserve System, if it is determined to halt inflation and

to live up to its responsibilities, will abstain from efforts to hold down interest rates and to monetize the public debt. “… [I]nflation must always end in a crisis and a slump, and that worse than the slump itself may be the public delusion that the slump has been caused, not by the previous inflation, but by the inherent defects of ‘capitalism.’

“Inflation, to sum up,” Hazlitt wrote, “is the increase in the volume of money and bank credit in relation to the volume of goods. It is harmful because it depreciates the value of the monetary unit, raises everybody’s cost of living, imposes what is in effect a tax on the poorest (without exemptions) at as high a rate as the tax on the richest, wipes out the value of past savings, discourages future savings, redistributes wealth and income wantonly, encourages and rewards speculation and gambling at the expense of thrift and work, undermines confidence in the justice of a free enterprise system, and corrupts public and private morals.

“But it is never ‘inevitable,’ Hazlitt wrote. “We can always stop it overnight, if we have the sincere will to do so.”

The chance for that? Zero under Joe Biden.

One of those prayers was for the community to gather in solidarity, and he was happy to say that prayer was answered on Sunday.

Shefrin urged the crowd to persuade neighbors and friends that antisemitism must be confronted and silence isn’t an option.

“It’s you who we need to write the letters and send emails and have conversations at the dinner table … wherever you find those people you have the chance to educate a little bit more,” Shefrin said. “To tell them, ‘We need you to take this seriously.’”

aren Kates has lived in Sarasota for 45 years and remembers the Jewish community being in a different place when she arrived from New York.

“When I moved here, the Jewish community (felt) like a very small group,” Kates said. “Sarasota has come a long way in integrating the Jewish community into the Sarasota community.”

The hundreds of people who gathered with Kates at Bayfront Park in support of the local Jewish community were a testament to her belief.

Local Jewish groups and supporters came together for a Unity Gathering at Bayfront Park on Feb. 20.

Hosted by the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee, the event was held in response to a number of antisemitic flyers distributed in Sarasota neighborhoods. The early afternoon gathering saw a large turnout, with many attendees bringing “United Against Hate” signs — some using the signs for shade when the temperature picked up later in the day.

Attendees heard from Jewish leaders, community figures and city officials, including Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee CEO Shep Englander, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, Sarasota Mayor Erik Arroyo and Cherokee Park Neighborhood Association President Dan DeLeo, all of whom condemned the hateful acts and championed unity in the face of antisemitism.

Later in the event, Rabbi Michael Shefrin of Temple Emanu-El took the podium and spoke to his experiences since last week. He admitted to feeling defeated and angry immediately after the flyers were distributed, so he kept to himself and prayed.

RENEGADE THEFT 8:50 p.m., 1400 block of Tamiami Trail Intoxicated person: Police responded to a call requesting substance abuse services. When an officer arrived, he found the woman who had called, and she continued asking for services. The woman was intoxicated but functional, according to the report. She claimed she had a drinking problem but had been sober until recently. An officer transported her to the hospital, and on the way the woman claimed Lorenzo Lamas had stolen money from her. When an officer informed her that Lamas is a famous actor, she listed other celebrities she claimed to have stolen from her. She was transported to the hospital without further issues.

A BAD VALENTINE 5:55 p.m., 1900 block of Fifth Street Suspicious incident: Police arrived at a home where a woman reported a man who was not supposed to be there. He did not have a key or permission to enter the residence but found a way in anyway. The man, who was intoxicated, told officers that he had been friends with the woman for more than 35 years.

STICKING TO IT 7:45 a.m., 1400 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way Suspicious person: A man entered a convenience store with a wooden walking stick and alarmed the cashier. He proceeded to walk in and out of the store, which prompted the cashier to call the police. Upon arrival, police saw the man trying to purchase items as the cashier explained he did not have enough money. Police offered the man services, but he refused. The man left the property without any further problems.

BAD BREAKUP 8:45 a.m., 4900 block of Royal Palm Avenue Written threat: A man said he had received multiple threatening text messages a few days after breaking up with his girlfriend. He did not recognize any of the originating phone numbers but believed them to be friends and family of the ex-girlfriend. He knew that several people were upset about the breakup and said he feared he was in danger.

After a year of historically low real estate inventories in Manatee and Sarasota counties, 2022 has begun

with even fewer properties actively on the market, data from the Realtor Association of Sarasota and Manatee indicate.

In its first data report of the new year, the real estate organization’s metrics show a total of 1,348 homes and condominiums actively marketed in January 2022 in the two counties, 45.4% fewer than the 2,966 total for January 2021.

“The Sarasota and Bradenton area is growing rapidly, with many outof-state buyers entering our market,” said 2022 RASM President Tony Veldkamp, a senior adviser at SVN Commercial Advisory Group. “That is especially true this time of year when more snowbirds are enjoying the Florida winter lifestyle. As buyers see the increase in home prices and interest rates, they are in a tough competition to get into the market before their purchasing opportunity is out of reach.”

With record low numbers of homes on the market, and a large number of buyers seeking them, properties continue to sell quickly.

trend, Veldkamp said experts are keeping close tabs on some key metrics that might indicate the beginning of a shift.

“New listings tend to rise in delayed response to the increase in prices, and inventory rises when new listings outpace the number of properties that go off market,” he said. “In January, there were more new listings than closed sales in the region. While it’s too early to determine whether this is a trend that will continue through 2022, it is a figure that we will be watching closely. As sellers see a continued increase in home prices and interest rates, which eventually will lead toward more supply, they have to decide whether to take advantage of now being the time to sell before the market levels off.”

ith vertical construction less than a year underway and completion set for fall of 2023, Kolter Urban’s Bayso condominium complex in the Quay Sarasota waterfront district is sold out.

Premier Sotheby’s International Realty handled the sales of the building’s 149 units, making more than $200 million in sales volume, with less than 12 months between the first sale and the final one, according to a news release.

“Bayso is an overwhelming sales success,” said John M. Gleeson, senior vice president of development services for Premier Southeby’s. “Kolter Urban has a deep understanding of all elements of the consumer market, from architectural design, floor plans and finishes to amenities and services. We believe these families will be thrilled with their new homes and contemporary lifestyles.”

The Kolter Group is responsible for another high-rise on the Quay

site: The Ritz-Carlton Residences, an 18-story, 73-unit building on the waterfront north of The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota. Kolter also developed The Mark, an 11-story mixed-use project at State Street and Lemon Avenue.

The city’s Development Review Committee discussed in November plans for an 18-story, 134-unit building on the Quay site, designed as a destination site of residential, retail, dining and more.

The Quay Sarasota has been in the works for more than six years.

The proposal is the fourth distinct project put forward under the Quay umbrella, adding to a planned suite of towers on a 14.7-acre property in downtown Sarasota that had been dormant for nearly a decade. Jacksonville-based GreenPointe Communities purchased the site at U.S. 41 and Fruitville in 2014.

Later, the company announced plans to build a destination district block by block, creating a mixed-use hub.

Ground might have been ceremonially broken for the Residences at the St. Regis Longboat Key Resort in October, but the project last week received approval for the first major component of construction.

Following signoffs from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the town awarded Unicorp Acquisitions II LLC, the developer of the project, a building permit for foundation work valued at $12.4 million.

According to town officials, Unicorp is expected to ramp up construction on the site almost immediately. In coordination with town building officials, a construction plan has been filed to deal with more than two-and-a-half years of work, designed to minimize offsite effects.

Among the plan’s provisions: n Weekly emails will be sent to nextdoor condominium communities Aquarius and Tencon, along with the town, with updates on the following week’s activities, milestones and more. n Primary construction and developer contacts to immediately respond to any issues. n Information on the methods used to limit vibrations. Builders are planning to employ augers to drive more than 2,600 piles to support the resort’s three residential buildings and its hotel building. This is intended to reduce noise and vibration, though vibration monitoring is part of the plan. n The order in which buildings will be constructed to reduce sound impacts and funnel sound to the interior of

the project or westward.

Guests and dignitaries gathered on the site in October for a ceremonial groundbreaking, though at the time, heavy machines in the background were already on the job. Unicorp had received the first permit the previous week to begin preparations.

One other fact worth mentioning: Longboat residents might have for years noticed that the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort had an evennumbered address, even though it was on the odd-numbered side of the Gulf of Mexico Drive. No more.

All of the town’s paperwork associated with the St. Regis project list the property as 1601 Gulf of Mexico Drive, next door to Aquarius at 1701 GMD and Tencon at 1511 GMD.

Heavy machinery is becoming a more common sight at 1601 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Speaking for about an hour in front of the readers group, Brown spelled out the organization of City Hall, reflected on his first year on the job and talked about the timelines of city projects.

He even traded quips with Deputy City Manager Pat Robinson.

“I did not know there was a group called the ‘Newsies,’ of which you

allowed Mr. Robinson to be part,” Brown said, jokingly confirming with the former deputy chief of police that he used his own credit card to join, not the city’s.

Brown, with the city since 2009, was promoted to interim city manager in December 2020 and formally assumed the city manager role about a month later. He said that while serving the interim role, values dear to him directed him to emphasize responsiveness and accessibility as the city’s top administrator.

Part of that thinking involved Robinson, whom he first named interim deputy city manager.

“We seem to have similar sort of approaches to how we do our job,” Brown said, explaining that Robinson’s expertise in public safety made him a natural to work closely with the city’s police department, emergency management, office of homeless response and others.

In discussing the city’s top strategic goals, Brown told the group about the city’s recent decisions advancing its Bobby Jones Strategic Initiative, a plan to restore the municipal golf course while also creating a nature park and adjacent county-run destination playground.

The idea is to develop a critical site to improve stormwater runoff from thousands of acres of watershed while also forming a recreational site that appeals to all generations.

Brown said the formal groundbreaking on the golf course site will be March 4.

He also told the Newsies group that the city’s new bicycle and scooter rental contractor is gearing up for a March launch and that the proposed first phase of the Ringling Trail, linking the soon-to-open Legacy Trail extension with the bayfront through downtown, is likely to be ready by the fall.

In the project’s first phase, painted stripes and plastic bollards will create room for cycling down the boulevard. A second phase proposes more permanent changes in years to come.

Brown also spent some time talking about the plan for replacing Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. He said the building, nearly 50 years old, lacks facilities to attract the biggest shows, and its location in a flood plain makes the choice to replace versus renovate obvious.

He said the city envisions a 2,250seat venue to open as early as 2025.

Brown said the city is looking at other sites around the world for basic design concepts.

“Here’s my direction to the Van Wezel Foundation: When individuals drive by, I want them to see this building and have a curiosity about it,” Brown said. “Be really curious about it. It has to be really iconic.”

ardinal Mooney junior Olivia Davis is normally verbose, but she was having trouble finding the right words to describe her feelings on Friday night.

“It is just … overwhelming positive emotion,” Davis said after a pause.

The smile on her face said the rest.

Minutes earlier, the Cougars girls basketball team (18-6) had finished off a 62-43 home victory over Carrollwood Day School (20-10), paving the team’s road back to the Final Four.

In the state Class 3A semifinals, the Cougars were scheduled to play West Palm Beach King’s Academy (24-5) on Wednesday afternoon at the R.P Funding Center in Lakeland.

NOTHING NEW

The feeling isn’t new for these Cougars. Cardinal Mooney reached the Final Four a season ago, where they beat Master’s Academy 47-32 to advance to the title game. The Cougars lost that game 59-34 to Miami Country Day. Davis said even though the results have been similar, the two seasons have felt different.

“The energy we have this year is unmatched,” Davis said. “The confidence we have is unmatched. Last year, we went into this (the Final Four) very rattled and not knowing much about the circumstances because none of us had been there before. This year, we know how everything goes. We knew what we needed to do to get here and what we still need to do.”

Part of that energy infusion is the team’s stellar freshmen pairing of Kali Barrett and Sy’monique Simon, who again shined against Carrollwood Day; Barrett had 18 points and Simon had 10. Part of that energy comes from Davis herself, who remains the team’s fiery leader as well as its most-consistent threat from 3-point range. Davis had 15 points against Carrollwood Day. the play would affect the game’s outcome, yet Antonio still demanded greatness — because he knows his team can deliver it.

“Every win at this time of year, you know, it’s not easy,” Antonio said.

“But we’re certainly not satisfied by any stretch of the imagination.

We have work to do still. We need to take care of the basketball. Ideally, I would like to have less than 10 turnovers a game. We need to possess the ball. That’s what we want.”

INTENSE, COMPASSIONATE

As intense as Antonio gets during games, he’s equally as compassionate away from the court. At the beginning of each season, Antonio cooks an Italian feast for his players at his home. This year, the dinner consisted of chicken Parmesan and meatballs and fresh garlic bread, among other dishes. It’s a tradition that brings the team closer together.

That closeness is the secret ingredient to the Cougars’ success.

“The girls seem to be gelling,” Antonio said. “They seem to be happy, and they are playing well as a result.”

If Mooney plays like it did against Carrollwood Day, the Cougars have a strong chance to advance.

Mooney outscored Carrollwood Day in each quarter, slowly building its lead while never letting the Patriots — ranked sixth in Class 3A — go on a prolonged scoring run to gain momentum.

Antonio’s frustration with the team’s turnovers was not misplaced.

The Cougars gave away 18 possessions that way. But the team’s defensive effort made up for those mistakes.

One thing Mooney will not need to do on this year’s trip to Lakeland is beat Miami Country Day, who not only beat Mooney for the title last

season but has won seven state titles in eight years.

The Spartans (20-9) lost 47-32 to Westminster Academy in the regional finals, meaning there is an opening for a new champion to take their place.

The Cougars believe they have as good a shot as anyone left standing.

“Don’t count us out,” Davis said.

“We’re coming.”

Not down for long F

or a moment, it looked like Riverview High’s boys basketball team was going to pull off a whopper of a comeback.

The Rams (21-8) trailed Windermere High (21-6) by 11 points at the half Tuesday night in a Class 7A regional semifinal. The Rams were the higher seed and hosted the game, but in many ways Windermere was the favorite. No small reason for that was Wolverines junior Sean Stewart, a Duke commit ranked the No. 28 player in his class by the 247Sports Composite.

Riverview hung with the Wolverines in the first quarter, even taking the lead by the end of it, but an 18-1 run by Windermere in the second quarter put the Rams in a bad spot.

And yet, there was a moment.

Riverview began playing better defense and taking better shots in the third quarter. A 3-pointer by senior guard Pete Goldberg cut the Windermere lead to five, 43-38, in the third quarter. The jampacked crowd went crazy. A group of Riverview students even showed off the “R-A-M-S” letters they had painted on their chests. The quarter ended with the Rams down eight, a comeback thoroughly within reach.

It was not meant to be. Stewart took over in the fourth quarter, finishing with 18 points, and the Rams started pressing, missing shots they normally make. The final score, 61-48, belies how close the game was when the Rams were playing their best.

“We just could not get over the hump,” Rams Coach Rudy Fraraccio said. “We played just five or six guys, and they emptied their tanks.

I’m pleased with our effort. … It was a good season, just not a great second quarter.”

Senior forward Jaron Glover led the Rams with 14 points. Freshman wing Jamier Jones had 11 points, and Goldberg had 10 points.

The loss will sting, but Rams fans have plenty of reasons to be excited about the program’s future. The team had nine new players this year, including all-world freshman Jones.

It was always going to take them a while to gel. They’ll lose heart-andsoul players such as Goldberg and forward Jackson Dawson — whom, I should add, had quite an impressive rebound over Stewart in the fourth quarter, ripping the ball from him — as well as Glover, who added athleticism in the post this year and is headed to Michigan State for football. But being able to build around Jones and junior Jason Jackson means the Rams will continue to be competitive.

That is no small feat in the Rams’ region, one of the toughest in Florida among all classes. Outside of Windermere and the Rams, the region also includes Dr. Phillips High, which features Kansas commit Ernest Udeh Jr., and Olympia High, which features uncommitted four-star Edgerrin “Jizzle” James Jr. (Yes, he is the son of Hall of Fame Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin James. You have my permission to feel ancient. I certainly do.) All that talent will make the next few seasons a dogfight come the playoffs. Fraraccio knows this.

It’s why he’s proud of his team for getting this far, even if he feels like they could have gone even further with a few hindsight adjustments.

“We stumbled out of the gate, but we had some good experiences and brought another district championship to Riverview High,” Fraraccio said. “But I sure would have liked to have had this one.”

Final Four and individual wrestling championships, which wrap up next weekend, the winter sports season is over. With that, high school sports fans can turn their attention to spring, which is already off to a roaring start.

Riverview fans unhappy about the boys basketball team’s finish can take solace in the school’s

baseball team, which got its season started Monday with an 8-2 win over Braden River High. Pip Smalley, a player I mentioned in my spring preview last week, has already begun to prove me right. A senior, Smalley went two for three with two triples and two RBI in the win. The Rams used five pitchers, and four of them kept the Pirates

The Rams lost in the regional semifinals Tuesday night, but days full of potential lie ahead.

scoreless, a good sign for their bullpen depth.

I also want to give a shout-out to the Sarasota boys lacrosse team, which won another game since my last column. The team actually came close to starting 3-0 but lost 11-8 to Northside Christian on Feb. 19. Again, this is a program that went 1-11 in 2021, it’s first real season in existence. The job Coach Christian Dombovari has done making the Sailors competitive in such a short time is impressive.

Finally, I want to end on an oddity. It’s been a while since I have seen something like this. Sarasota Christian’s baseball team started its season with a 23-2 win over Port Charlotte Community School on Tuesday. An impressive score on its own. But what if I told you that in that win, three Blazers pitchers combined for a no-hitter? Yes, despite giving up multiple runs, the Blazers did not allow PCCS to get a hit. Sarasota Christian pitchers Alexander Hefti, a sophomore; James Featherston, a freshman; and Randall Collins, a freshman, were responsible for the feat. They combined to walk five hitters and, somehow, two of them scored without the help of a base hit. I don’t want to dwell on that part too much because it takes away from the “nohitter” part, but it’s just as interesting in its own way.

I’m not sure if the fact that the game ended after four innings because of the mercy rule makes all of this happening more or less unbelievable, but it does make it more unusual. There’s a lesson in it, too: Whenever you attend a sporting event, you never know what you are going to see.

In order to stop Harris, Carter and the other Highlanders, Booker knows it will have to bring its “A” game — and then some.

“We are going to play hard and fight for what we deserve,” junior Chariot Johnson said. “We’re not going to make any excuses. It’s not going to be, ‘Oh, we’re a small team.

Oh, we’re a young team.’ We’re going to leave it all on the court and see what happens.”

Johnson leads the Tornadoes averaging 9.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Booker does not have an elite scorer, but the team can go 12 players deep with everyone contributing something, whether it is senior Jaydn Lattimore’s tight defense or senior Ty’anna Ash’s heady passes. Lake Highland Prep rarely plays more than seven players.

It is the little things that matter now.

Booker High Coach Ty Brant said it repeatedly during the team’s Feb. 22 practice. When a handful of players failed to take a free-throw segment of practice seriously, instead running over to someone with an armload of Gatorade, Bryant brought things to a halt.

“We’re shooting 63% from the free-throw line,” Bryant said to them. To Bryant, that is not nearly good enough. He made the team run to make up for its lackadaisical attitude — then, after a lengthy postpractice talk, made sure everyone sank free throws before they could leave. That time, no one shirked the responsibility.

The Tornadoes (20-7) have been more than good enough in other areas to overcome their free-throw woes.

Booker won 74-50 over Port Charlotte High 20-9) on Friday, securing a spot in the Class 4A Final Four. The Tornadoes will play Lake Highland Prep (23-4) at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lakeland’s RP Funding Center. If the Tornadoes win that game, they will play either Bishop Kenny (25-4) or Calvary Christian Academy (22-6) in the state championship game.

Thinking too much about that possibility is not recommended by Bryant, who urged his team to stay in the moment and enjoy the experience of playing in the Final Four.

Booker has a large task in front of it. Lake Highland Prep is ranked the No. 1 team in Class 4A and the No. 3 team in Florida by MaxPreps. The Highlanders are led by senior forward Nyla Harris, a Louisville signee and the 35th-best player in her class, according to ESPN. Junior guard

he Thunder By The Bay music and motorcycle festival made a roaring return to Sarasota Fairgrounds Feb. 18-20.

The festival drew hundreds of motorcyclists and thousands of enthusiasts to a weekend of music and machinery.

Although Thunder By The Bay presented a fashion show the weekend before, the festival started in earnest with a kickoff party and the Budweiser Clydesdale horses trotting throughout the event. Guests admired monster trucks and other imposing vehicles in the Thunder Alley area before walking into the fairgrounds, where live music was accompanied by food and drinks and plenty of vendor booths to visit.

Saturday featured music from FireHouse, The Tobacco Rd Band, The Verge and the Slippery When Wet Bon Jovi tribute band.

Proceeds from the event benefited Suncoast Charities for Children, which provides grants to nonprofits helping children and adults with special needs.

Art takes over Main Street

T

he 34th Annual Downtown Sarasota Festival of the Arts took over Main Street for a weekend of visual treats Feb. 18-20.

The annual affair drew art enthusiasts to downtown Sarasota, where Main Street from Orange to Links avenues was filled with artists and vendors showing their wares on both sides of the street.

Paintings, fine photography, jewelry, colorful dog sculptures, copper designs and much more filled the street.

Attendees strolled through the space with family and pets and picked up things to take home.

ara’s Becky Emmett has visited Greece only once, but she makes up for it every year by attending the St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church’s annual Greek Glendi.

“I love Greek food, Greek people, Greek music,” Emmett said. “I’ve been to Greece.

To pay homage since I can’t go there every year, I come here.”

The Greek Glendi once again gave attendees a taste of traditional Greek food, music and dancing Feb. 18-20.

Lakewood Ranch High School junior Jasmine Burden and senior Samantha Greenfield said they couldn’t wait to try some dishes and pastries after they finished volunteering for the festival.

“The food here is so good,” said Greenfield, who attends the Greek Glendi every year. “I love the coconut macaroons and the ones with the chocolate drizzle.”
