Plaque honors school pioneer The legacy of pioneering educator Dorothye Smith was honored last week by Sarasota County Schools and Newtown Alive when a bronze plaque of her likeness was unveiled at Southside Elementary. The plaque includes her words: “Never do less than your best.” Following a teaching career at Emma E. Booker Elementary School’s original campus in Overtown, as well as Venice Elementary School, she served as the first Black principal in Sarasota’s integrated school system. Saturday’s ceremony included educators, friends and family of Smith, who died at the age of 90 in 2017.

Hit the beach and maybe win As if heading to the beach in February weren’t prize enough, Visit Sarasota County now has made it possible to win perks by heading to the shore. The tourism agency recently launched the Beach Pass feature to its smartphone app, delivering information about the county’s 20 beach spots — from Blind Pass to Longboat Key. As part of the launch, Visit Sarasota County also included a game in which players can gather points for checking in at such places as Siesta Beach and Ted Sperling Park.
