he list of mainland developments near Siesta Key that are adopting the island’s name just got longer.

The owner of Paradise Plaza, the 139,000-square-foot shopping center across from Westfield Southgate Mall, is revamping the property and renaming it the Shops at Siesta Row, according to ECHO Realty Senior Vice President Drew Gorman.

“Never ‘boaring’ in Sarasota!” — Doug Miles “This is purely an upgrade to the existing center and part of a branding and architectural endeavor,” Gorman said. “We won’t be adding any additional square footage.”

ECHO, which bought the plaza for $27 million in 2014, is conducting roughly $600,000 worth of renovations to the Publix-anchored center, according to a building permit filed with the city.

The property also houses Petco, CVS, Pier 1 Imports, Salon Lofts, J-Pan and others at the intersection of Bay Road and South Tamiami Trail.

The firm is following the lead of Westfield Southgate Mall, which is conducting its own redevelopment project and rebranding as Westfield Siesta Key. Gorman said competition from the Mall at University Town Center played a role, as well.

ylie Crawford is confident Sarasota residents would greatly enjoy all of the benefits a carillon could provide to a community — if only they knew what a carillon was.

“People don’t know what to make of it the first time they hear of it, but it’s addictive,” Crawford says.

First things first: A carillon is a musical instrument consisting of at least 23 bells played with a keyboard and foot pedals. The large-scale instrument is typically housed in towers, though a few mobile versions exist.

Now that that’s out of the way: Why, exactly, should people be interested in bringing a carillon to Sarasota?

Crawford, a seasonal resident who serves as president of the World Carillon Federation, knows he’s an unusually devoted believer in the value of the instrument.

He discovered the carillon as a graduate student at the University of Chicago in the 1960s, and was the college’s chief carillonneur for more than four decades.

Like any true believer, he is certain the masses can be converted — and that they’d be better off for it.

“It’s like asking what’s the benefit of having an orchestra or theater group or orchestra house,” he said. “It’s entertainment. It’s a gathering place.”

As it happens, there’s a carillon in Sarasota right now. Frank Della Penna owns one of three mobile carillons in the United States, performing musical routines under the name Cast in Bronze. Della Penna is working at the Sarasota Medieval Fair at the Sarasota Fairgrounds and says his performances are a hit among the renaissance fair crowd.

Crawford is angling to keep the instrument here a little longer. He just has to find a venue willing to house it for public performances between now and February.

So far, his search for a home for the carillon has proved challenging. He originally reached out to The Ringling, but had no luck.

He’s targeted Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Sarasota Jungle Gardens and Sarasota Square Mall, all of which have failed to deliver a “yes” in response to his proposal.

The Cast in Bronze mobile carillon is in town one last weekend at the Sarasota Medieval Fair. The fair is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 19-20 at the Sarasota Fairgrounds, 3000 Ringling Blvd. Tickets are $17.95 for adults, $15.95 for seniors, students and military and $8.95 for children 5-12.

Improvement District briefly discussed the carillon, considering whether there was space to store it downtown. The board agreed it wasn’t a good fit, highlighting the challenge Crawford faces.

“I’d love to have him visit downtown for a parade, but as a permanent fixture, I don’t know if it’s going to make friends,” DID board member Daniel Volz said.

Crawford is not giving up hope on finding someone willing to display the 4-ton, 25-foot-long collection of 35 bells.

“I’m trying to think outside the box,” Crawford said. “I’m hoping there’s somebody who’s as equally motivated who knows the territory better than I do.”

At the very least, he said it would be a welcome addition during the holiday season.

“I put together a flyer with a picture of the instrument that says, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if you could hear Carol of the Bells on real bells?’” Crawford said.

Even as the short-term use of the mobile carillon remains a major question, Crawford is dreaming of erecting a permanent carillon tower somewhere in Sarasota. He says he’s personally seen communities benefit from the installation of two carillons — one in the Chicago Botanic Garden, another in the suburb of Naperville, Ill. He knows it’s too early to get into the logistics of planning something like that, but he also says a project can come together quickly if a motivated donor is on board. Before that can plausibly happen, he has to get over that small hurdle of nobody knowing what a carillon is.

And so, the search for a home for the mobile carillon continues.

“Seeing one is the key,” Crawford said. “That’s why I’m working so hard to get this one on loan.”

Some people might cringe at the idea of talking about Christmas before Halloween has even rolled around, but Danny Bilyeu didn’t have a choice this year. He had to find a float for Santa Claus.

For the past three months, Bilyeu has been working with a team of volunteers to address that and other logistical challenges in advance of the annual downtown Sarasota Holiday Parade. The event, scheduled for Dec. 3, is going on without its founder and longtime leader Paul Thorpe for the first time this year.

When Thorpe stepped down last year, it was unclear who — if anyone — would take his place.

But the parade will go on, with Bilyeu organizing the 21st annual iteration of the holiday event.

“I’ve been working with Paul behind the scenes for years,” Bilyeu said. “He turned 90 this year, so I think he was ready for a rest. I like to do it, and I want the tradition to carry on, so I said I’ll step up this year and we’ll move forward.”

With just over two weeks before the big event, Bilyeu is relying on a group comprising other longtime volunteer coordinators and a few newcomers eager to help organize the Sarasota tradition. The deadline for applicants interested in joining the parade has passed, but the organizers are still working to squeeze 20 new participants into the route.

The theme for the 2016 holiday parade is “Salute to Veterans,” selected in honor of the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Bilyeu said the organizers are going to use the event to spotlight local veterans, particularly those who served in World War II. “We’re going to lead it off with the veterans, and we’ve got an honor guard and a 1948 fire engine that are going to lead the way,” Bilyeu said.

Although there aren’t any significant changes in store for this year’s parade, Bilyeu is confident the event will still be a hit. And though Thorpe isn’t running the show anymore, Bilyeu also said the parade’s founder will still be there to participate in the festivities.

“He doesn’t want me to, but I’m calling him the grand marshal,” Bileyeu said with a laugh.

St. Armands Circle businesses and property owners remain eager about plans for a new parking garage in the area.

City staff is working on finalizing an agreement with a project architect and contractor.

After reviewing proposals, the city is negotiating with KimleyHorn and Associates to design the project and Jon F. Swift Construction to build the structure.

Parking Manager Mark Lyons said staff hoped to present contracts to the City Commission for final review on Dec. 5, though the process is subject to delay. The St. Armands stakeholders involved with selecting the companies were happy with both firms.

“I think we’ve got a good team to move forward on the garage,” said Diana Corrigan, executive director of the St. Armands Circle Association. “I think we’re in a good place.”

December 2018. In addition to constructing a 521-space garage at the site of the municipal parking garage on North Adams Drive, the project would involve burying utility lines and adding new signage and median end caps.

Although the proposals expressed some optimism that the project could be complete before December 2018, Lyons said it’s too early to say whether that timeline and budget could be substantially revised.

“Until there’s a contract, they don’t really do more estimates,” Lyons said. “They do preliminary work, but that’s all falling in line with our initial estimates.”

Staff is still in the process of coordinating with Florida Power and Light to get an updated cost estimate on burying power lines.

Although the city is waiting for that information, Lyons said the project seems to be moving along smoothly.

Legal battle delays Cask & Ale project After the city approved his plans for a cocktail lounge on Main Street, Jeffery Catherell was sued by Cask & Ale’s co-owners.

onths after the Cask & Ale cocktail lounge and tapas restaurant planned to move into a Main Street storefront, the owners of the St. Petersburgbased business are embroiled in a legal battle as the bar remains unopened.

Jeffery Catherell, who has represented the business throughout the process of applying to open a Sarasota location this year, is at the center of the dispute. During public meetings in the city, he hasn’t tried to hide his plans for the future of Cask & Ale. At a Feb. 18 workshop where he initially discussed his proposal, Catherell said the owners of the bar were expanding with an eye toward eventually selling their portfolio to a larger entity.

Those plans may now be jeopardized by a lawsuit filed against Catherell Sept. 20 in Pinellas County. The lawsuit, filed by Cask & Ale co-owners Brother’s Associates LLC, seeks damages in excess of $15,000 from Catherell.

The lawsuit alleges that Catherell, who had been appointed to manage the day-to-day operations of the business, sought to trademark the Cask & Ale brand without the knowledge of Brother’s Associates. It also claims Catherell concealed businessrelated information from the company and began diverting money to himself, among other allegations of mismanagement.

In the lawsuit, Catherell is identified as a managing member of Special Cask Blend LLC, which owns a 25% stake in Brother’s Associates and has an operating agreement with the company to run Cask & Ale. “Catherell continues to claim personal ownership of the Cask & Ale name (and) is continuing in his efforts to license out the name for his personal benefit,” the complaint states.

Catherell denies allegations of improper business practices, saying the lawsuit is motivated by a personal dispute with a member of Brother’s Associates.

“Never once have I denied them access to the business, the office or any information,” he said.

Catherell claims to have the right to trademark Cask & Ale and said he is being forced out after putting in the work to open the Sarasota location.

Catherell said he was pursuing legal action in response to the lawsuit, stating that he signed and personally guaranteed the lease for the Sarasota location.

He said the Brother’s Associates application for a liquor license with the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco did not disclose Catherell’s involvement with the project, and was hopeful he could retain his place with the company after he raised that issue with the state.

“If enforcement stops the liquor license, I’m not going to even bother filing the (legal) complaint because they’re going to be forced to come back to the table with me,” Catherell said.

Catherell said Brother’s Associates intends to open the Sarasota business without his involvement. Representatives for Brother’s Associates did not respond to requests for comment.

Jesse Biter, the entrepreneur who owns the Main Street property Cask & Ale is slated to move into, was unaware of any changes to the status of the project.

“No update from them,” Biter wrote in an email Nov. 7. “I’m not sure what’s going on.”

Work is continuing on the property at 1548 Main St. Shaun St. Dennis, co-owner of KS Contracting Services, said construction was completed within the past two weeks.

Catherell said he intends to file his complaints by next week, if necessary.

DeMarcay builder seeks change of plans DAVID CONWAY DEPUTY MANAGING EDITOR

As developer Greg Kveton searched for a contractor for the 18-story, 39-unit DeMarcay on Palm condominium project, he ran into a problem: Nobody wanted to build it.

The development was supposed to break ground in June at 33 S. Palm Ave., demolishing the historic DeMarcay Hotel and Roth Cigar Factory in the process.

It’s November now, and both buildings are still standing.

It may still be a while before the construction begins. On Monday, planning consultant Joel Freedman filed an application to amend the DeMarcay site plan on behalf of XAC Developers, the Illinoisbased firm behind the project.

XAC Developers is asking the city to change one condition of the plans for the project, formally approved in 2006. The plans state “precast or comparable construction shall be utilized above the sixth floor of the project.”

Those plans were approved under a different property owner; XAC Developers purchased the land in March 2014. In October 2015, the city issued a building permit for the project on the day the site plan was set to expire.

Soon after, Kveton said he discovered the mandate for precast construction led to difficulties finding a contractor willing to build the project. The requirement was designed to minimize the impact on the surrounding area. If the developer used prebuilt structures, the think-

ing went, construction would be quicker and less disruptive.

Ten years later, the new developer says precast construction would make the project more complex.

“Were it not for the condition specifying precast, no structural engineer or concrete shell contractor would consider using precast plank for a building like the DeMarcay,” Kveton wrote in the application. “In fact, we are unaware of any high-rise building in Sarasota that has been built with this method.”

The amendment application includes testimony from an engineer and contractor, both of whom agree with XAC Developers’ assessment of the precast construction process.

“We have built numerous 20-plus story condominiums and hotels and estimated hundreds; this is the first time we have seen (precast) hollow core on a structure of this height and slenderness,” wrote Steve Whitley, president of Reinforced Structures Inc. Tim Litchet, the city’s director of neighborhood and development services, believes it’s accurate that no other downtown high-rise has used that construction technique. Kveton has worked with Litchet and other city staff members in an attempt to get around the requirement for precast construction.

Litchet said the language in the site plan approval is cut and dry. Any change would be a major adjustment — one that staff couldn’t administratively approve, he said.

“They proposed it originally, not us,” Litchet said. “Their problem is they inherited what the original developer agreed to.”

As a result, the site plan amendment has to go through public hearings in front of the Planning Board and City Commission before it can be approved. According to the city’s review schedule, the plans would go before the Planning Board in January and City Commission in February.

EXTENDED CREDIT

The city’s website says the building permit for the DeMarcay project expired Oct. 13.

Although the deadline to commence work on the project was originally set for October, city building official Larry Murphy said that’s no longer the case. This summer, that date was pushed

back to June 6, 2017 — and the developer can thank Tropical Storm Colin.

In 2011, the state passed a statute that extends certain permitted rights when a state of emergency is issued. The statute applies to building permits issued by local governments, creating a six-month extension.

In June, Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency in Sarasota County in advance of Tropical Storm Colin. As a result, representatives for XAC Developers contacted the city in August to confirm the new date for the building permit expiration.

“Whether the local government wants to or not, (the state) tacks that on as a means of making sure the natural elements don’t impede the economy,” City Attorney Robert Fournier said.

Construction hasn’t begun yet, but Greg Kveton still intends to turn the DeMarcay Hotel into an 18-story condo building.

T

he Rust Belt states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan became the story of the Nov. 8 election. But we Floridians know that, had Hillary Clinton won Florida early on in the night, that would have forecast an entirely different outcome.

Florida was the bellwether.

As it has been.

Because of Florida’s incredibly diverse demographics — socially and ethnically, demographers say Florida is the closest state in the nation that reflects national demographics. And because of that, how Florida votes is a darn good bet on how the rest of the nation will vote.

Indeed, if you look at the voting maps above, they look much like the election maps of the United States — predominantly conservative geographically with a few pockets of high-density, urban, progressive strongholds.

In spite of that imbalance of predominantly red conservatism, the nation has been seen as being split almost 50-50, leaning a few percentage points either way.

As this election approached, the pollsters expected the popular vote to be leaning left. They saw Florida that way, too, but they also saw Florida to be, once again, too close to call.

At a glance, Florida appeared to live

up to expectations: Donald Trump: 49.02% Hillary Clinton: 47.81% But here’s the news: It was not as close as it looks.

When Barack Obama won Florida in 2012, he eked out a victory with 50% of the vote to Mitt Romney’s 49.1% — a 74,310-vote difference.

Trump’s margin of victory, while close in percentage, was 114,455 votes.

Here’s what made the difference: When Barack Obama won Florida in 2012, only 0.86% of the vote went to third-party candidates. In 2016, Trump won the same percentage of the vote as Romney, but 3.16% of this election’s vote went to third-party candidates, not to Clinton. These were Obama votes in 2012.

Here are more telling statistics: n Total registered Republicans: 4,550,311 n Total votes for Trump: 4,615,910 That’s 65,599 more votes than registered Republicans. n Total registered Democrats: 4,877,749 n Total votes for Clinton: 4,501,455 That’s 376,294 votes fewer than registered Democrats.

You draw the conclusion. It should be obvious.

Florida’s vote pretty much followed historical patterns.

Clinton dominated in the traditional Democratic urban counties: MiamiDade, Broward, Palm Beach; Orlando (Orange and Osceola counties) and Tampa (Hillsborough County), plus the liberal university centers in Gainesville (Alachua County) and Tallahassee (Leon and Gadsden counties).

With the exception of Hillsborough, she won all of those strongholds with 58% to 70% of the vote (Hillsborough was 52%).

But to illustrate how Clinton was unable to match Obama’s perfor-

But when you look at the makeup of Florida’s congressional delegation and the two houses of the Legislature, Republicans dominate. And they have since 1996.

Of the state’s 27 congressional

seats, Republicans hold 16. They lost one seat in last week’s elections. You might say former Gov. Charlie Crist tipped the balance when he beat incumbent Republican David Jolly.

In the Florida Senate, Republicans hold a 25-15 margin (they lost a seat in Miami-Dade). In the House, Republicans hold 80 of the 120 seats (they lost two seats last Tuesday).

Florida Democratic Party leaders will tell you this imbalance is a result of Republican gerrymandering. To which some Republicans reply: “Back at you.”

mance, of the nine counties she won, and won them handily, Clinton nonetheless won by margins that were less than Obama’s in 2012. What’s more, Trump was able to flip four counties that voted for Obama in 2012 (see “Counties Trump Flipped” above).

Conversely, while Clinton was unable to improve winning margins in Democratic shoo-in counties, Trump improved on Romney’s margins in 47 of the 58 counties that Trump won.

Consider the eight counties lining the west coast of Florida — Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee and Collier.

Trump increased his winning margins and Clinton increased her losing margins in six of the eight counties.

Only in Hillsborough and Collier did Trump have a smaller winning margin than Romney.

The most surprising shift was Pinellas (St. Petersburg, Clearwater).

Pinellas voters two decades ago and before were among Florida’s staunch conservatives. But in the four presidential elections since 2000, Pinellas voters chose Al Gore, Obama twice and nearly voted for John Kerry over George W. Bush in 2004. In Bush’s dominating victory in 2004, he beat Kerry by only 226 votes in Pinellas.

Given that history, and the fact Pinellas voters backed newly minted Democrat Charlie Crist in the 2014 gubernatorial election with 52% of the vote, Pinellas appeared to be and should have been a lock for Clinton.

So much for conventional wisdom.

And to give you one last piece of evidence that also debunks conventional wisdom, consider what is often referred to as the I-4 corridor — typically the Democratic counties of Hillsborough, Osceola and Orange; and the typically Republican counties of Polk, Seminole and Volusia. Pollsters and pundits often say whoever wins the I-4 corridor wins the state.

George W. Bush won the corridor twice. Barack Obama won it twice.

This year, the I-4 corridor voted decisively for Clinton, beating Trump by 133,187 votes. And yet, Clinton lost the state.

The moral of all this data: Florida is indeed a microcosm of the U.S. electorate. And like the U.S. electorate, even though Florida Democrats and Republicans typically vote party line, they also vote, or don’t vote at all, on past performance. What’s more, that growing swath of non-party affiliated voters — now 27.6% of Florida’s total — votes for the candidate whose message best resonates in their hearts and minds. That’s what happened Nov. 8. Win Florida, you win it all.

eventeen years ago, my bosses, Richard Day and Ray Peper, took a leap of faith and joined the efforts to regentrify the area of Sarasota north of Main Street. They designed and constructed a four-story building on Second Street and opened the John Carl Spa and Salon, where I have been employed since its inception.

We all watched with hopeful excitement as the downtown area began to flourish and fairly quickly became the “it” place to live, invest, shop and work.

Property values increased.

Restaurants, shops and condominiums suddenly appeared in vacant storefronts or on vacant lots.

Unfortunately, along with this urban growth spurt came unexpected consequences for which there seems to be no solution.

Foremost and most important among them: the proliferation of Sarasota’s homeless population.

For several years, we sympathetically coexisted while occasionally encountering a panhandler sporting a seemingly

walk home after dark?

On numerous occasions and as recently as last week, I have arrived for my workday to the sight of a man urinating on the east wall of our building as if no one else existed. No privacy. No decency. Not a care in the world.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! It is sad to watch our livelihoods be threatened by a relentless and uncaring group of people who feel it is their right to panhandle, sleep on the sidewalk, litter, urinate and defecate wherever they please without regard for anybody’s desire to patronize a local business, a business owner’s investment or an employee’s livelihood.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Every licensed professional who works in our building pays an annual fee to the city of Sarasota for a local business tax. What exactly do we get for that, except a piece of paper to display? This tax is in addition to all of the other state and county taxes all businesses incur.

We, as well as other local merchants and respected business owners, need help from the city of Sarasota for an effective and permanent solution to this problem.

We are kindly asking you, our city commissioners and administrators, to try harder so that our much-loved and wellrespected business may flourish to its full potential.

In an effort to be sympathetic to the plight of the homeless, we brushed off these negative remarks and tried to make light of the situation.

Unfortunately, it has now reached a point where this can no longer be tolerated.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! This situation is now out of control, and the rights of the homeless to assemble are now interfering with my right to earn a living. This is completely unacceptable, and I, along with my bosses, co-workers and clients, am fed up.

We have already lost one business at 100 Central, and several other area merchants and businesses only allow patrons in after ringing a doorbell and waiting to be buzzed in.

Is this the kind of community Sarasota officials imagined when they welcomed large investments by merchants and residents to the downtown area, one where people feel they must drive two blocks to the opera house because they are afraid to

How do you make a wastewater facility blend in with the park setting that surrounds it?

That’s the challenge Phil Smith is facing as plans for the Lift Station 87 facility continue to advance. On Nov. 9, Smith, a landscape architect with David W. Johnson Associates, shared his team’s vision for Luke Wood Park once construction is complete on the lengthy project.

That vision includes a diverse array of native landscaping, from large Southern live oaks and slash palm trees to ground cover like firebush and muhly grass. After conducting a public design process, the Lift Station 87 team doesn’t want to hide the facility completely. Once the building is constructed at 1900 Mound St., however, the team wants Luke Wood Park to feel like a park again.

The engineering firm behind the lift station project is in phase one of a three-phase construction plan scheduled to continue through December 2020. The second phase, the actual construction of the lift station building, is scheduled to begin in May and conclude in October 2019.

Only two members of the public spoke at the Nov. 9 workshop regarding the landscaping plans.

Kathy Faught, a resident of the Central Park II condominiums, applauded the use of native plants

and the attempt to re-create a substantial canopy in the park.

Still, she had concerns about the plans for landscaping behind the building. The planting between Mound Street and the lift station seemed to be robust, but she feared there would be a lack of cover for the portion of the structure facing the nearby residential buildings.

“People who live on the second floor will be looking directly at it,” Faught said. “Instead of suddenly facing a brick wall, it would be nice if they had something to break up their view.”

Smith and project manager Robert Garland said they would re-examine the plans for the area between the lift station and Central Park. The lift station team intends to provide a rendering for that portion of the property in the future.

City Commissioner Susan Chapman asked whether the landscape plans might reflect the historical character of Luke Wood Park. In the 1930s, the Sarasota Garden Club turned the park into an arboretum — a collection of many different types of trees.

Although the property has transformed since then, Chapman suggested the lift station team should examine the park’s past in considering its future.

Garland and Smith agreed to investigate that aspect of Luke Wood Park, though the landscape architect said he didn’t have much information regarding the property’s past.

“Basically, our involvement has been to really look at the existing canopy and respond to what’s going on there,” Smith said.

Loyalty is in the cards Fads come and fads go, but Sarasota’s Pokemon community is staying loyal to the basics.

While “Pokemon Go” has largely come and gone, a more traditional version of the game proves it has staying power among Sarasota’s Pokemon loyalists.

Dark Side Comics regular Elbert Platt calls the store the last mecca for comic book and gaming enthusiasts in Sarasota. For many, Platt included, the store is more than just its merchandise.

of tables, each row four tables deep, each draped with a black tablecloth.

It’s a place for people to gather, play games or just hang out. But from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sundays, it’s an arena.

Dark Side, at 935 N. Beneva Road, began hosting Sunday afternoon Pokemon tournaments two years ago, long before the brand’s recent resurgence.

Chrissy Johnson became a regular at the tournaments earlier this year with her 8-year-old son, Taylor Johnson.

Johnson said she was the only female routinely playing in the group when she began, but she’s seen some more faces at their Sunday afternoon ritual as of late, both male and female.

Software developer Niantic Inc., based in San Francisco, released a mobile version of Johnson’s beloved card game in July called “Pokemon Go.” Using GPS, the app allows players to catch and collect Pokemon characters on their phones in real time.

The game caught fire among Pokemon enthusiasts. Those who played the video game or collected the cards started to engage with Pokemon in a way that could not have been imagined when the brand premiered in the late 1990s.

Although the game pushed the boundaries of what many thought was possible on a mobile platform, some of Dark Side’s frequent competitors say the game lacked the strategic elements that are native to the card game. “‘Pokemon Go’ being a mobile game was very casual,” Platt said.

“I think a lot of people missed that competitive edge because there is nothing competitive about it.”

The card game involves two players, each with a deck of Pokemon cards. Players don’t always know what is in the deck and are only allowed to look at their cards as they draw them. Each card represents a different character, with different powers that make it more or less lethal depending on the character it is facing.

This makes the card game more like a game of chess. “Pokemon Go,” is more like a game of catch.

Alex Freeman was introduced to Pokemon when the video game came out in the late 1990s and became interested in collecting the cards when he was 9. He

learned to play to the card game two years ago when he started going to Dark Side’s tournaments.

He wears a bright yellow Pikachu hat, with its pointed, black tipped ears, while playing Ryan Stanberry in the first round of a recent tournament. From the look on Stanberry’s face, Freeman was doing very well.

At 16, one might think Freeman represents “Pokemon Go’s” ideal demographic — a digital native already interested in the brand.

Yet, Freeman and many of the other regular competitors were relatively unfazed by the game.

Dark Side regulars saw some new faces at their Sunday afternoon gatherings, but for the most part the tournaments attract the same group as always.

“For the loyal fans, I don’t think ‘Pokemon Go’ had a huge influence on them,” Platt said.

He’s wearing a Pokemon shirt while sitting over binders filled with Pokemon cards open on the table. He said that although the game didn’t influence longtime tournament players, it did change the brand’s reputation.

Platt began collecting the playing cards in junior high and continued collecting through high school — he just wasn’t telling anybody about it. Then the game was considered geeky and taboo.

Now, Platt thinks more recent versions of the brand has changed that perception.

“I wore a Pokemon shirt today.

I would not have done that in high school,” Platt said.

Platt said “Pokemon Go” could not replace the competition and camaraderie that awaits players behind the shelves.

“We’re not just a bunch of people that hang out. We’re a family,” Platt said.

GOING NUTS 8 a.m. — 3900 block of Overlook Bend Terrace Dispute: An officer met with the supervisor for a roofing company who said a resident threw acorns at workers doing roof repairs a few days earlier. The supervisor said the resident was also yelling at the workers, and they moved all their equipment to a different unit until they could make contact with a property manager.

The company was contracted to repair all the roofs in the subdivision. Officers could not reach the man who threw the acorns.

CRACKING THE CASE 7:15 a.m. — 3300 block of Gillespie Avenue Property Damage: A woman left her home in the morning and discovered that sometime during the night, her car had been egged. The woman believed an ex-boyfriend of hers was responsible for the incident, but she was not certain of the identity of the suspect. Officers saw no actual damage to the car and provided the woman with a case number.

The woman washed the eggs off of her car.

STUMBLING & BUMBLING 9:15 p.m. — 1500 block of Ringling Boulevard Property Damage: A woman reported her car had been damaged while she was out drinking with her friends. Officers discovered two depressions on the right side of the car and determined the damage was consistent with that of somebody falling into the car. The damage was estimated at $500.

There is no such thing as a former Marine. And if you needed proof, all you would have to do is look around the room at Sarasota’s 14th annual Marine Corps Birthday celebration.

Retired and active duty Marines gathered at Thursday at Marina Jack to commemorate the 241st anniversary of the Marine Corps.

Although some Marines in attendance hadn’t actively served since the 1940s, it was clear that these men and women will always be Marines.

Generational distinctions were blurred as World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans exchanged handshakes and war stories with younger Marines who served in the Gulf War and the more recent conflicts in Iraq

Although Cafferata died earlier this year, his widow, Doris Cafferata, and their daughter, Lynn Cafferata-Coovert, attended the event as the guests of honor.

The tradition began when 14 Marines gathered at Marina Jack to celebrate the 227th anniversary of the Corps.

“Look at us today. Unbelievable,” event organizer Tom Smith said about the packed room.

Despite new faces, old traditions remain. A cake is cut with a saber, with the first piece going to the guests of honor. The second piece is given to the oldest Marine in attendance, who passes it to the youngest Marine to symbolize the passing on of the Marine legacy.

sked if he thought his players could defeat firstround playoff opponent Olympia by 31 points, like they did on Nov. 11, Riverview head coach Todd Johnson gives a resounding “Yes!” It appears plenty of confidence is hovering over the Ram Bowl in 2016.

The 56-25 win was the team’s first playoff win since 2004, when Riverview beat rival Sarasota 23-0. Against Olympia, Riverview was up 49-0 at the half.

Olympia quarterback Joe Milton holds offers from South Carolina and Iowa State, and the Rams, now 9-1, forced him into three interceptions.

The Titans had no shot against this Rams team, which is impressive considering the program’s recent history. Riverview won as many games during the regular season, eight, as it did in the past two seasons combined.

Johnson said he could tell during spring practices this year’s team had a chance to be special.

He saw talented athletes all over the field. However, the biggest difference between this year’s Riverview team and past teams, Johnson said, is not one of talent, but of belief.

“We were in a lot of games last year, but these guys have the con-

fidence to win,” Johnson said.

The Rams squad also has a bit of magic about it. On paper, the team’s roster does not look like a dominant team, yet Riverview has consistently smashed opponents.

Take, for example, the Rams’ senior quarterback, Mike Welcer.

Last season, Welcer played more as a tight end and on special teams than he did at quarterback after Dominic Caldwell, now at Florida International University, beat him out for the job. This year, Welcer was handed the job in the spring, and he’s run with it, literally.

Welcer is part of a multiheaded, monstrous option attack that is

the heart and soul of the Rams.

His 40-yard touchdown dash on Riverview’s first possession of the second half against Olympia effectively put the game away.

Welcer has done that time and again this season. When he needs to throw, he’s been effective.

Junior Mike Van Ness and freshman Malachi Wideman are some of his favorite targets.

Welcer feels he has gotten better throughout the year, but said, “I think everyone’s game has improved. I just feed off them. I just do what they do.”

f you’re looking to sharpen your wit through conversation, head to 1279 Tallevast Road in Sarasota on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday night.

This type of “conversation,” the Sarasota Fencing Academy and Club kind, is not done through words. It is done through the clashing of foils.

Fencers lunge, parry and riposte in bouts. Here, the fencers make the moves, and the swords do the talking. Conversation is defined as the “backand-forth play of the blades.”

Richard Georgia opened the club in 2008, about two years after he moved to Sarasota for its arts community. Georgia has been fencing since he was a 12-year-old in Rehoboth, Mass., with an interest in the Renaissance, when the sport was modernized. After seeing intricate swordplay sequences in movies like “The Princess Bride,” he persuaded his parents to sign him up for lessons, and he instantly fell in love.

“I was excited to feel history in my hands,” Georgia said.

Georgia kept fencing through college, even medaling at a few national events along the way.

When he moved to Sarasota, though, he had to stop. There was no fencing club in the area to suit Georgia’s needs.

He thought he had a shot at the Olympic team, and was not going to give up on that dream,

so he decided to open his own academy and club.

A herniated disk and a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee put a damper on Georgia’s dream, but he loves teaching the sport to others and spreading his passion and knowledge.

“Most people who try it enjoy it,” Georgia said. “But you don’t really know what it is until you try it. You don’t realize how much it is a physical game of chess. It’s a mental game. It really pushes you to the fastest of your neurological response times. It forces you to make very quick decisions.”

Georgia’s academy offers youth and adult classes, plus club time, when fencers of any level can challenge one another.

Introduction to Fencing classes for youth and adults are six weeks long and cost $155. Club memberships are $60 a month.

Fencing is not a “dorky” sport, Georgia said. The fencing community is tight-knit, and it’s filled with intelligent and driven people, among them doctors, artists and lawyers.

“It’s not a sport you get into if you want to make a million bucks,” Georgia said. “It’s a sport you get into because you are truly passionate about it.”

Tomasin Brennan is a 14-yearold fencer from Sarasota. At 7, Brennan won the gold medal in the Under 10 Mixed Foil Competition for the United States Fenc-

ing Association’s Central Florida Division. She stopped fencing for a while to race Go-Karts but picked the sport up again about two months ago.

Brennan said she was aggressive growing up and always gravitated to male-dominated sports.

She tried ballet but decided that was too “fancy-dancy.”

Naturally, a sport involving swords caught her attention.

“It’s the one legal place where you can stab people,” Brennan giggled. “It’s really fun.”

Brennan also likes being fully in control through fencing, something she didn’t experience in Go-Karting. The one-on-one aspect of the sport makes things feel more personal, she said.

Matthew and Mark Vu, 8 and 6 years old, are relative newcomers to the sport.

Mark Vu said going against other people in bouts is “pretty cool.” He’s learned to stand and lunge and recover.

His brother was less forthcoming.

“I just like it,” Matthew Vu said with a shy grin.

I can see why. Fencing is a great time and a unique workout.

I appreciate sports that reward mental preparation just as much as physical prowess. There’s a grace, an elegance to fencing that draws me toward it. Its movements are fluid, and the reaction time of its participants is extraordinary.

A double Bob Warnicke Scholarship Program BMX race will be held at Sarasota BMX. The races raise money for the Bob Warnicke Scholarship Fund, which gives scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000 to BMX racers attending college.

Warnicke was a BMX promoter who helped create the BMX “Road to Glory” series on ESPN and ESPN2. Last year, the pro-

gram distributed $75,000 among 74 recipients. The race costs $20 to attend and starts at 7:30 p.m.

The sophomore running back is undersized at 5-foot-6, 175 pounds, but runs with great vision and never goes down on the first hit. He was a heavy contributor last season as a freshman, and this season, he has gotten even better.

Senior Vince Sellers, who transferred to Riverview from Booker before last season, does a bit of everything for the Rams. He is a strong safety with a knack for big interceptions and acts as the team’s return man. He took a punt 75 yards for a touchdown against Olympia. Sellers also plays offensively as a wide receiver and occasionally takes handoffs out of the backfield, adding another weapon to Riverview’s vaunted running game.

on defense, Johnson said, yet the team allowed more than 25 points just once during the regular season. That is a sign of the quality depth Riverview has developed under Johnson, the former Chicago Bears and St. Louis Rams defensive back.

Those pieces are the backbone of the best Riverview team in 10 years. Its system fits its players’ strengths perfectly, and that makes them dangerous.

They also have great chemistry.

After the Olympia game, Johnson finished up his remarks to his team and stepped away. None of the players budged. Instead, Sellers moved to the front of the semicircle and led his teammates in a raucous chant. During these times, smiles abound. It becomes obvious that past challenges have brought them closer.

Dr. Phillips is up next for the Rams. A loss on Friday would not diminish the Rams’ accomplishments this season. The team has surpassed all expectations and rekindled excitement for football at Riverview.

iesta Key Crystal Classic founder Brian Wigelsworth is often asked what happens if it rains during the annual sand-sculpting festival.

The answer is simple.

“We get wet,” he said.

Twelve teams competed in this year’s festival from countries as far away as Russia. While it may seem counterintuitive, water is vital to the sculptors’ process.

“Water is our glue,” Wigelsworth said. “Once the water dries out, it pretty much falls down.”

A master sculptor himself, Wigelsworth created the festival seven years ago after traveling to similar competitions around the world. Siesta Key’s sand is 99% quartz crystal, making it extremely fine — and perfect for sculpting.

“This sand is unique in all the world,” Wigelsworth said. “It is the finest sand in the world and it’s only found on this 3-mile beach.”

The seventh annual Crystal Classic ended Tuesday, but the main event concluded Sunday afternoon with the announcement of the winner of the master sand sculpting competition.

This year, the honor went to Abram Waterman, of Canada, and Walter MacDonald, of Texas, for their sculpture “Sneak Peek.”

The piece depicts a large portrait of MacDonald with two children peeking through his eyes to a sand castle in the rear of the sculpture.

MacDonald said he has participated in the festival since its beginning, but this is his first time he’s won the competition. “ ... The event is so good that winning isn’t the most important thing, but this is my first time winning first prize, so hallelujah,” MacDonald said.

Wigelsworth said the Crystal Classic is special in that it’s only one of a handful of competitions that use their beach’s natural sand. Other competitions bring in sand from quarries or rivers. After the last visitor left on Tuesday, it was time to return that sand to the beach.

A front loader was rolled in to knock down the works of art.

Although some might think it would be difficult to destroy the masterpieces, Wigelsworth said it’s just part of the process.

“We are temporal artists,” Wigelsworth said. “We know our art is temporary. We actually enjoy that aspect of it.”

Gulf Gate tastes local flavors

T

he parking was slim and the line to enter was long during A Taste of Gulf Gate Nov. 10 at Gulf Gate Public Library. Some didn’t make it to the door, daunted by the length of the line.

But the persistent were greeted by temptations from 20 local restaurants wafting down the hall to the ticket table.

Attendees piled their plates high and ate surrounded by books while listening to local band Limewater perform.

The event was put on by Friends of Gulf Gate Library, which raises money for the library. A Taste of Gulf Gate is the group’s largest fundraiser.

The event exceeded last year’s turnout of 350, with attendance estimated at 400.

Maxine Solomon carries a basket of gift cards, which attendees could purchase for $20. Each gift card was worth $25 at a local restaurant.

Proceeds benefited the Friends of Gulf Gate Library.

Built in 1991, it has four bedrooms, four baths, a pool and 4,872 square feet of living area. It previously sold for $2.2 million in 2015.
