Hospital gala raises $900K
The pandemic stopped Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation supporters from meeting in the foundation’s annual fundraiser, but it didn’t stop the fourth annual hospital gala event from raising more than $900,000 on Jan. 9. Gala Chairwoman Ariane Dart (above), Sarasota Memorial Health Care System President and CEO David Verinder and foundation President Mason Ayres hosted the virtual event, which included speeches about the foundation’s mission, a virtual paddle-raise and a performance from The Royals. Four hundred households tuned into the show, with more than 175 meals delivered to viewers at home from Michael’s On East and Morton’s Gourmet Market.

Scholarships for Booker grads
The Community Foundation of Sarasota County recently established a $50,000 grant for 14 Booker High graduates to attend college. The grant will be matched by the Stanley G. Tate Florida Prepaid College Foundation and will cover tuition and registration for public colleges in Florida. “Booker High School students do not lack ability,” said Michael J. Shelton, the chair of the Booker Promise Board of Trustees. “They lack opportunity. They need mentors. The Community Foundation Grant will help fulfill these needs.”
