County changes vote on Waterline Road project PAM EUBANKS SENIOR EDITOR
— The Manatee County Commission breathed new life into a proposal to build a 195-unit development on a 77.9acre parcel on Waterline Road, more than a year after the board voted to kill the plan. Manatee County commissioners approved the Martin-Hillwood project Feb. 5, in a 6-1 vote. The board denied plans 5-2 for the 195-unit development in September 2013, for several reasons, including Waterline Road’s configuration and compatibility issues. EAST COUNTY

However, landowners Mary Jane Martin Smith and Richard Martin appealed the decision, filing for mediation. A special magistrate issued an opinion last month that the board should approve the project based Florida statute and county code. The revised site plan shows the same number of units but more land between the development and the project’s Waterline Road frontage. “The applicant showed a revised plan with bigger buffers,” said Commissioner Betsy Benac, who voted for the project both SEE WATERLINE PAGE 7A

Girl Scouts in Manatee County are in crunch time — cookie crunch time, to be exact. The Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida have begun to accept preorders for their famous Girl Scout cookies, and can even do so online through a new digital platform at girlscoutcookies.org. (You download the Cookie Finder App). Door-to-door cookie sales and cookie booths will start Feb. 14. This year’s cookie options include eight varieties: Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-Si-Dos, Trefoils, Savannah Smiles and two new cookies — Rah-Rah Raisins, an oatmeal cookie with raisin and yogurt chunks, and Toffee-tastic, a gluten-free cookie with toffee bites. Cookies cost $4 per box, or $5 per box for the Toffee-tastic. To learn more about Girl Scout cookies go to www. gsgcf.org/cookies-more.
— Nancy’s Bar-B-Q isn’t packing up its downtown Sarasota location, but it is moving to the east side. The restaurant, which has a cult-like following for its North Carolina-style pork barbecue, has signed a lease for a unit on Lakewood Ranch Main Street and likely will open for business in May.
