Lake Uihlein condos aim high The Lakeshore plans to offer penthouses that likely will cost more than $1.5 million.
+ Sights for stripes Braden River High School’s Jasmine Stanton knew just what to do when this year’s Manatee County Fair’s diary costume contest came around. Stanton and her heifer, Karim, entered as a zoo keeper and a zebra. “It was a lot of fun and very amusing to watch so many different exhibitors and their animals dressed up in a variety of costumes,” Jasmine says. “From creative ones like a baker and an oven to show that there was ‘a bun in the oven’ to the Jolly Green Giant and his three peas in a pod, it was hard to pick out the best one, in my opinion. You could tell everyone put a lot of thought and creativity into their costumes.”
LAKEWOOD RANCH — As Homes by Towne makes preparations to construct 80 upscale condominium units behind Lakewood Ranch Cinemas, another developer has a similar venture in mind. Larry Pearce, managing partner of Realco, a real estate investment and development organization, is finalizing plans for 44 more condo units along a narrow strip of land between The Fish Hole Miniature Golf and Michael Saunders & Co., behind Lakewood Ranch Main Street on Lake Uihlein.

Benderson unveils new hotel plans The six-floor Homewood Inn and Suites is a deviation from Hilton’s prototype. EAST COUNTY — Benderson Development is one step closer to fulfilling its vision to make its University Town Center project a one-stop venue for visitors to Manatee and Sarasota counties. The company last week broke ground on the first of several future hotels, totaling 500 rooms, surrounding The Mall at University Town Center. The first is a 130-room Homewood Suites. The six-lev-
+ Garden fresh Since it sprouted about two months ago, Lakewood Ranch Main Street’s first edible garden continues to grow. The community is curious about the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee’s culinary students’ garden, which features more than 15 vegetables and spices. Residents and Main Street shoppers who pass the garden, which lines the sidewalk in front of USF’s Culinary Innovation Lab, ask students inside the lab questions and tips to grow vegetables at home, said Juliette Ravinale, lab assistant manager. USF’s College of Hospitality and Technology Leadership students use the ingredients to prepare recipes in the lab.
