+ Elephant in the room Ironically, Carol Sawyer says that her collection of elephants has nothing to do with her position as president of the Republican Women’s Club of Sarasota but more so with her love of elephants. Sawyer estimates she has more than 50 elephants of all shapes and sizes in her collection. Every year, Sawyer’s collection grows with gifts from friends and family members who are well aware of her pachyderm fascination. At the monthly meeting for the Republican Women’s Club of Sarasota last week, her friend Mary Lindamood surprised her with a new addition that she had purchased at a church sale.

Corps to redesign Lido groins
POLICING POLICY
All three groins will be designed to be smaller and less intensive as part of the Big Pass dredging project.
With a budget nearing $30 million, the Sarasota Police Department represents nearly half of the city’s general fund expenditures. Its per capita staffing levels are healthier than many surrounding municipalities of a similar size, and the city recently approved the addition of three additional officers. And, yet, the department is still working to come to terms with the resources available to it, adjusting to the new normal after coming down from an alltime high. Like all arms of city government, the SPD shrunk after reaching peak levels in 2007. At that time, the department had a staff of 204 sworn officers; today, that number is 158. The number of eliminated positions fails to capture the context of from where those losses came. Capt. Pat Robinson, currently serving as the interim deputy chief, explained that the first jobs to go were command level and specialist positions. Units geared toward proactive enforcement and specific tasks,
In response to residents’ concerns about the impact groins on Lido Key will have on waterway navigation and Ted Sperling Park, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is redesigning them to make them smaller. The groins are part the Big Pass dredge project, which the U.S. Army Corps is proposing to shore up sand on Lido Key. “They’re going back to the board, seeing if they can still make the project work and stay cost effective,” said Laird Wreford, coastal initiatives manager for Sarasota County. The Army Corps is looking for the point at which the groins can be reduced while still serving their purpose of helping prevent beach erosion. Wreford said the Army Corps hasn’t released many other details, such as how long the redesign will take or what effect it will have on the amount of sand needed for the project. The redesign does, however, set back the process for the independent peer review of the Army Corps’ study of the Big Pass dredge. The county cannot move forward to select a firm to review the study
Down more than 20% of its sworn officers since 2007, the Sarasota Police Department is adjusting to life with a leaner force.

… Well, we already knew that, right? Now apparently all of New York knows how wonderful our slice of paradise is, too. It all started when Leonard Lauder, chairman emeritus of Estee Lauder Inc., chose to marry Judy Glickman in Sarasota rather than at his beachfront estate in Palm Beach, as expected (read more about the wedding in this week’s Black Tie & Tales column). NY Times and New York Social Diary reporter Geraldine Fabrikant was intrigued and visited Sarasota to see it for herself. She reported in the New York Social Diary about the history of Sarasota, its many famed celebrities, such as Stephen King and Adrienne Vittadini, and the arts scene, including The Ringling and Perlman Music Program’s winter residency. Considering the great press this article gives Sarasota and the cold winter New York is experiencing, we’re predicting some full flights into SRQ from JFK and LaGuardia soon.
Since then, the city has reduced the number of sworn SPD officers by another 17 positions. In the past, Chief Bernadette DiPino has been critical of using the FBI crime data as a yardstick for evaluating the department. Capt. Pat Robinson agreed that the picture those numbers paint is incomplete, in particular highlighting Sarasota’s daytime population spike as a factor that made an apples-to-apples comparison difficult. “Every city has its own population, its own issues, its own layout,” Robinson said.
