OUR TOWN + Barr Dunn gets 100% for 50/50 Edith Barr Dunn presented the Kiwanis Club with a $3,680 check from her final 50/50 raffle at the Dec. 6 Longboat Key Gourmet Lawn Party. Proceeds are typically split 50/50 between the winner and charities, but this year’s winner, Richard Diedrich, donated 100% of his prize.

+ Bell-ringers: The next generation? Kiwanis Club President Armando Linde reports this story from a recent bellringing shift that makes us optimistic the tradition of bell-ringing outside Longboat Key Publix will live on in future generations. A young boy, about 7 or 8, dashed out from a vehicle with a $5 bill for the kettle. He said: “You do great work. Merry Christmas!” We suspect the Kiwanis Club might recruit him someday for his own bell-ringing shift. Glenda Leonard, development director at the Salvation Army, will speak to the Kiwanis Club at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 18, at the Longboat Key Club Tavern & Whiskey Bar.

SMH plans for St. Armands clinic A hospital subcommittee approved the $3.6 million purchase of the property where St. Armands Medical Center is currently located. A Sarasota Memorial Hospital subcommittee voted last week to approve a $3.6 million purchase of property near St. Armands Circle to build its sixth urgent care center. If the hospital board approves the purchase at its Dec. 15 meeting, Sarasota Memorial would

purchase the land and building at 500 John Ringling Blvd., where St. Armands Medical Center and a Re/Max Platinum Realty office are currently located. The purchase does not include the building’s medical practice, according to Frank Morgan, executive director of outpatient

services at Sarasota Memorial. St. Armands Medical Center owner Dr. Edward Carlstrom, who owns the 5,476-square-foot property, said he plans to move his practice to Bahia Vista. “I’m slowing down, and the walk-in business requires more energy,” said Carlstrom, 65.

Sarasota Memorial has considered building a clinic in the area for approximately five years. “We certainly wanted to have a presence, but it was about finding the right location,” Morgan said. “We really felt we had a location that could serve not only St. Armands and Longboat Key but also Lido Key, Bird Key, Plymouth Harbor and certain ar-

+ Bishop elected to USTA Florida board B.J. Webb Bishop is on board with yet another organization: She was recently elected as an at-large member of the U.S. Tennis Association Florida board of directors. Bishop is also a member and former chairwoman of the Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board and current president of the USTA Florida Foundation. She says it’s a wonderful opportunity to give back to a sport that has given much to her.

Sarasota Open bounces to Lakewood Ranch courts For the first time in six years, Southwest Florida’s premier tennis tournament will not take place at the Longboat Key Club. The Sarasota Open drew more than 30,000 people to the Longboat Key Club Tennis Gardens in recent years — but in 2015 those athletes and spectators will head east.

Sarasota Open officials announced that next year’s tournament, scheduled for April 11 to April 19, will be held at the Lakewood Ranch Tennis Center. Sarasota Open CEO Tony

Driscoll approached Paul Lederman, director of athletic center operations at Lakewood Ranch Tennis Center, about the pos-
