Heritage Harbour seeks change

+ Like minds Stacy Rosenberg and her son, Logan, may have more in common than they realize, such as their taste in books. Logan read “Wonder” in his fourth-grade class at Gene Witt Elementary School, while Stacy Rosenberg also was reading the same story. “Wonder” tells the story of August — a boy who suffers from craniofacial disfigurations and is bullied in school. Rosenberg read the story, because her cousin, Alyssa Henkin, edited the book and it became a New York Times best seller. After hearing how much Logan enjoyed the story, Rosenberg arranged for him and his class to talk with Henkin over the phone earlier this month. For the Rosenbergs the phrase, “Great minds think alike,” rings true.

+ Holiday offerings Two East County businesses appealed to customers’ sweet teeth on the eve of Thanksgiving. To say “Thank you” to loyal customers, Premier Sotheby’s International Realty on Lakewood Ranch Main Street and Michael Saunders & Co. on Lakewood Ranch Boulevard offered complimentary desserts Nov. 26. Both companies used email blasts to notify individuals about the free sweet treats. The Main Street Realtor offered slices of cheesecake and its neighbor, Michael Saunders, gave away 300 pumpkin, apple and cherry pies to its grateful customers.

While sorting through a cardboard box filled with photos and mementos, memories rush to Marion West’s mind. The Mote Ranch resident pulls out a program from the 2007 Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony and unwraps a miniature plane. It’s a replica of the P-51 planes the Tuskegee Airmen flew during World War II. The cream-colored plane is complete with the bright red tail that inspired the planes’ nickname, the “Red Tails.” “It was during my senior year in 1941 and ’42 that the war broke out, and I knew that I was going to go into the Army, but I was preparing myself because I wanted to go to medical

school,” said West. In 1941, West was a senior in high school in Owensboro, Ky. He had considered the idea of enlisting in the military at some point, but after the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7 West knew his destiny. The timing coincided with a new Army initiative to train civilian radio technicians. After completing the program, West joined the 1000th Signal Company of the 332nd Fighter Group, an allblack group.

HERITAGE HARBOUR — Change is coming for Heritage Harbour residents, both in their CDD meetings and in their community. Better wetlands regulation and community involvement are issues Heritage Harbour South Community Development District’s newest supervisors Tad Parker and George Mosinskis already have etched on their notepads. Along with its new members, who replace CDD veterans Lee Bettes and Joe Jaudon, the CDD will soon have a new chairperson and potentially a shift in board dynamics. The duo officially took their seats on the board this week and former CDD Chairwoman Joyce Sandy resigned from the chair position at the Nov. 12 meeting for undisclosed reasons. “The board will be changing,” Mosinskis said. “Hopefully we’ll start making good changes. There have been things that worked, and there are things we can improve.” Mosinskis, who has attended
