+ Stuff the bus A bus isn’t just for transporting people anymore. You can help feed the hungry this holiday season by volunteering your time or resources to the sixth annual Stuff the Bus campaign. Manatee County School District and Publix Super Markets will host the sixth annual “Stuff the Bus” Nov. 22 through Nov. 23. Organizers hope to collect 150,000 pounds of food. Individuals can donate food items at Publix locations throughout Manatee County those days. Food collected will go to The Food Bank of Manatee. The school district also is teaming up with United Way of Manatee County, Tropicana and FM radio stations 106.5 CTZ and 92.1 The Coast to put on the event. Volunteers are needed. For information, contact Doreen Ravagnani at 7481313.

EAST COUNTY — The perfect storm hit Jen’s MarketPlace Oct. 18. The Mall at University Town Center’s opening weekend sliced Lakewood Ranch Farmers Market turnout numbers in half and thousands of breast cancer survivors and their families traveled to the Ranch to participate in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer — all on the same day as the

market. But, low turnout Oct. 18 for the farmers market aside, the outdoor event on Lakewood Ranch Main Street is doubling in size and will continue into 2015. “With all the events going on during the last market, there was just too much happening for us to have a strong market in October,” McCafferty said. “But, we’ll have a strong November, and the next

few months will be strong too, once more snowbirds get here.” No contract has been signed, yet, but market manager Jennifer McCafferty and Main Street Property Manager Amanda Vercheski agreed through emails to extend the market’s stay through May 2015. Vercheski said the agreement hasn’t been put into a signed contract yet. The paperwork, she

said, is still in progress. The fourth Saturdays of the month from January through May — Jan. 24, Feb. 28, March 28, April 25 and May 23 — will feature a bigger market, with about 50 vendors. Early markets had 20 to 30 vendors. New vendors featured at the

Traffic stacking proves problematic for drivers Benderson Development seeks a roundabout solution. EAST COUNTY — When University Park Country Club resident Glenda Auxier presents a problem, she always likes to offer a solution, as well. But for traffic at the intersection of Cooper Creek Boulevard and Tourist Center Drive, a vital intersection between Benderson Development’s Shoppes and Tourist Center Drive at UTC commercial centers, Auxier balks.

“I really don’t have a fix for this,” she said, as she watched traffic back up for the signal at University Parkway and Cooper Creek. “But, I think it has something to do with the two left turn lanes. They need to look at another way in.”

As Freedom Elementary celebrated Veterans Day with its annual “Let Freedom Ring” courtyard ceremony Nov. 12, there was a special treat in the crowd: original Parent-Teacher Organization member Sharri Cagle and two of her three children, Lindsey and Logan. Cagle led efforts to create the Let Freedom Ring Courtyard and start the annual ceremony at it. Cagle and her family returned from a roughly sixyear hiatus in Arizona last year and now live in the Tampa area. Her children asked to attend Freedom’s ceremony.
