+ Pink Purses Crowder’s Gifts and Gadgets turned into a pink wonderland Oct. 29, as the store welcomed Vera Bradley brand ambassador Joan Bradley Reedy, daughter of Vera Bradley and sister of company co-founder Barbara Baekgaard. Reedy shared anecdotes of Vera Bradley’s history and personal stories during the special event, which raised money for breast cancer research. At the end of the event, owner Jina Crowder presented Reedy and Vera Bradley rep Angela Black with a check for $1,000 for the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer Research and Awareness. The organization has contributed $20 million to the research being conducted at Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Center in Indianapolis and has pledged $15 million more.

EAST COUNTY — A tide of supporters wearing red “Cantrell for School Board” Tshirts erupted into cheers and applause as election results came in Tuesday night. Mary Cantrell, the longtime leader of Manatee Technical Institute, ousted Julie Aranibar, who has served on the Manatee County School Board since 2010. Cantrell reGENERAL ELECTION 2014 ceived 53,406 votes, for 46.3% of the vote, compared with Aranibar’s 46,517 votes, for 40.3% of the vote. “I’m so excited,” Cantrell said of her District 5 school board win. “I’m so grateful. I think we’re going to have a wonderful board that works together for the betterment of our schools. There are hard decisions that need to be made.” Cantrell took the helm of a flailing MTI program in 1996 and grew it from one campus with 500 students to four campuses with more than

Favorite bus driver steers education + Pose-y Perfect As plant enthusiasts gathered Oct. 23, at the Polo Grill and Bar Fëte Ballroom, Kate Kreider and Melissa Brosnan bloomed with animation. Holding an empty photo frame and a plush flower, the women shouted “Selfie? Come take a selfie!” to guests entering the District VIII fall meeting of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. About 300 people attended the event, led by the Manatee River Garden Club. District VIII is composed of 24 garden clubs. Introductory speaker Jo-Anne Schneider even kicked off the conference by leading a morning stretch-and-bloom exercise.

Children surprised longtime McNeal Elementary bus driver Mike McCarter with letters and plenty of hugs on his last day. LAKEWOOD RANCH — Mike McCarter commands the attention of more than 60 children as if he were Mary Poppins. As McCarter maneuvered Manatee County school bus No. 599 under the back canopy of McNeal Elementary Oct. 29, the more than 60 children he has transported for the last four years greeted him with cheers, signs and a binder full of letters they’d written to him as a gift on his last day. Although on a tight schedule, McCarter waved his arm. “Come on, we’re going to take

a picture,” he said, sending a crowd of cheering children toward the school’s pavilion. McCarter is leaving to take a position with FedEx. “It took a lot to come to this decision,” McCarter said, noting he’s declined other job opportunities over the years. “I’ve got to provide for my family. This was too good to turn down.” Teacher Sheryl Tadelman said McCarter is unique, taking a special interest in the wellbe-
