FDOT proposes circle theory
and the Manatee County Public Works department may have a solution OUR TOWN FDOT to ease congestion and decrease accidents on State Road 64 — roundabouts.
+ MTI hosts 9/11 blood drive As the nation remembers the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Manatee Technical Institute will commemorate the tragedy with a blood drive from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 10 and Sept. 11, at its main campus, 6305 State Road 70 East, in front of Braden River High Schol. The goals is to provide a way for individuals to pay tribute to 9/11 victims and honor individuals who served. “Each donation saves three lives,” said Kelly Ewing, instructor and SkillsUSA advisor at MTI. Donors will receive a “Never Forget” T-shirt. For more information, contact Ewing at 751-7900, Ext. 1107 or ewingk@manateeschools.net.
EAST COUNTY — Less congestion and slower speeds may not seem like traffic scenarios that work together. But the Florida Department of Transportation and Manatee County Public Works department are mulling two East County roundabouts for State Road 64 that would slow drivers without causing a traffic jam.
After receiving a few phone calls from concerned residents, the county is deciding what to do about the intersection of Rye Road and State Road 64. It conducted a study to determine if a traffic light and/or a rightturn lane would address callers’ concerns about high speeds, congestion and the difficulty of turning from the two intersec-
tions onto the busy roadway. According to the federal guidelines for traffic-control devices, the number of vehicles traveling on the roads per day — about 14,000 on State Road 64 and 3,000 on Rye Road — warrants action, whether a traffic light or other device, said Sage Kamiya, deputy director of traffic management for the Public
Works department. During its research over the last few months, FDOT also added the Lorraine Road intersection to its radar. FDOT officials, though, don’t think traffic lights will help the intersection’s traffic issues. Now, Public Works and FDOT

DEVELOPMENT
by Pam Eubanks | Managing Editor
Medallion moves forward with dairy site Founder and owner Carlos Beruff says development should start in about 18 months. EAST COUNTY — Medallion Home founder and owner Carlos Beruff pushes a 21-page, paperclipped stack of black-and-white copies across his desk. The pile may be small, but the feat it represents is not: 21 months of litigation between multiple parties ended.
The document, an amended and restated local development agreement, paves the way for Medallion to develop a 289-acre parcel off Upper Manatee River Road, best known as the Moore’s Dairy site, and it ends a nearly three-year dispute between Medallion Home, Lennar Homes
and Manatee County. “It was the right thing to do,” Beruff said of the agreement, which cleared up title issues related to a previous foreclosure (see related story on page 8). “The county gets a critical road for the future — an alternative to State Road 64. It was all about
who pays for what and that takes time.” Medallion will develop the property as its own development, not part of Heritage Harbour. The property already is approved for up to 735 units.
