+ VFW Post 12055 named All-American VFW Post 12055 recently earned national recognition, taking home all-American honors during the VFW National Convention in St. Louis. At the convention, Post Comm. Dave Dailey accepted an all-American streamer for the post flag, a certificate of appreciation and an all-American VFW hat. To receive all-American honors, the post must make all-state requirements and rank in the top 25 in its membership division; Post 12055 ranks No. 12 nationally in its division. “The best thing about our little post is we do not have a building or canteen, so 100% of the money we raise goes to our programs and community,” Dailey says. “We want to make a difference in our community and help our fellow comrades.” The post meets at 7 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month at the American Red Cross, 10311 Malachite Drive, Lakewood Ranch.
READY Sarasota and Manatee counties will jointly install a radio communications network that will improve EMS and other services along University Parkway and in the region.
EAST COUNTY — Willie Miranda’s day starts almost as soon as he rolls out of bed around 6 a.m. From his laptop, he monitors Manatee County’s radio communication system and begins the morning’s tasks. “The days are long, but I like to get started early — before the calls (start),” Miranda says, laughing. Miranda, a 53-year-old Greenbrook resident, is leading Manatee County as it works with Sarasota County to install a regional 800-megahertz P25 radio system over the next two years. In Manatee, the technology change will affect all fire districts, emergency medical services, law enforcement, public works and the cities of Bradenton, Holmes Beach and Anna Maria, among others — about 40 agencies. In Sarasota, 39 agencies will use the system. The system likely will cost around $30 million — estimates range from $15 million to $18 million for Manatee and from $18 million to $19 million for Sarasota. “Why so much money? Whenever everything else fails, we need to keep on going

Food bank seeks funds for its new location Meals on Wheels PLUS hopes to expand its adult daycare center program by relocating it in a building in Spring Forest Office Park. RIVER CLUB — Maribeth Phillips and Kristen Theisen stand in front of a reception desk at what used to be Little Footsteps daycare and have a vision. Down the hallway are a series of classrooms, each with sinks, and a large open room that will be ideal for large gatherings. “This is just perfect,” said Phillips, the chief executive officer of Meals on Wheels PLUS, a nonprofit dedicated to helping seniors live independently and providing nutrition and care support services. “It already has a craft room.” The women hope the space soon can become the organization’s new Daybreak Adult Day Center, Manatee County’s only adult daycare center. The nonprofit has a contract on the property at 10920 State Road 70 E., with a closing date set for sometime in October. But, the deal is not yet final. The organization has requested funding of $50,000 annually for 10 years from Manatee County. Daybreak’s
