OUR TOWN + Schield healing after cancer surgery Longboat Key resident Forrest Schield is healing after doctors recently removed a rare form of cancer from his head. Schield, 21, is a student Schield at State College of Florida and also works at Quik-n-Easy. He’s determined to continue his courses so he can become a University of Florida Gator next year. Schield will continue his studies at home for the beginning of the semester but is looking for a math tutor who would be willing to come to his home each week for the next month or so. Because the family is facing the costs of cancer treatment, a tutor who is willing to donate his or her time would be especially appreciated. + Fish fry is first catch for flavorful weekend The morning of Nov. 8 might be a good time to schedule a gym visit. Why? The Longboat Key Historical Society’s Fish Fry begins at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Cedars Café and Tiki Bar. The Longboat Key Gourmet Lawn Party will follow from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. Fish Fry ticket sales will begin in September. Details will follow in a future issue of the Longboat Observer.

n late 2010, Daiquiri Deck owners Troy Syprett, Russell Matthes and Matt Grover made a vow of solidarity: They wouldn’t shave their beards until their new restaurant opened on St. Armands Circle. They didn’t expect their pact would require them to go without shaving for five-and-a-half months as construction issues delayed the opening. But, in March 2011, they made the cut when the restaurant finally opened. Three-and-a-half years later, the trio hopes that several additional openings are on the horizon. Will they ditch their razors once again in anticipation of the milestones? Not a chance. “That was a one-time thing,” said Matthes, Daiquiri Deck’s vice president of marketing. Syprett, Matthes and Grover plan to expand the second-story St. Armands location to include the ground-floor space previously occupied by Sarasota Yogurt Co. They hope the project will be completed by Thanksgiving. They are in discussions

to open at a new, undisclosed Sarasota County location by the end of the year. In the long term, they hope to continue to add new locations, growing to as many as 10 restaurants from Clearwater to Naples. Having a first-floor presence on St. Armands was one of their goals from the time they opened there. “We wanted the first floor from the start, but it hasn’t been available,” said Grover, vice president of operations. “When it became available, we jumped on the opportunity.” Renovations will add 1,500 square feet and approximately 75 seats to the restaurant’s existing nearly 3,000 square feet and 200 seats. The company will hire 30 to 40 new employees to add to its current staff of 340. “The basic plan is to bring the atmosphere from upstairs to the first floor,” Grover said. They will add a folding NanaWall, a folding glass wall that will allow them to open

Eight units at the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort sold for a median price of $152,500 in 2007 — the year before the first lawsuit was filed in the dispute between unit owners and longtime owner Dr. Murray “Murf” Klauber. The legal battles for the property have raged on for seven years. The property has been shuttered for four years. Last week, Unicorp National Developments Inc. President Chuck Whittall made an offer to owners at the 237-unit in an Aug. 6 letter. Colony Beach & Tennis Association President Jay Yablon described it this way in an Aug. 9 email to unit owners: “not as an offer but as an ultimatum.” Whittall envisions a five-star resort that will consist of a 160to 175-room hotel, along with a couple hundred condo and tourist units for the property. In his letter, he urged owners to deed their units to the company and choose one of the following options: • $20,000 cash; • Seven free nights per year over a five-year period in a new five-star hotel that the letter states will have an average nightly rate of $1,000. (Whittall said the $1,000 rate would be a peak season price.) • Purchase a tourist unit valued at $900,000 for a 10% discount, an option that would entitle the owner to 45% of rental income. Alternatively, Unicorp would consider allowing unit owners to use their units for the 30 days annually in which they had access when the resort was open for $150,000, according to the letter; • Purchase a condominium unit at a 10% discount that will be valued between $1.7 million and
