Mazel with Temple Beth Israel member Ruth Lerner

+ ’Mazel’ tov to TBI-sponsored dog Marine Corps veteran Michael Jernigan, who was blinded in a 2004 roadside attack in Iraq, spoke to Temple Beth Israel members in 2012 about his service dog, Brittani. After his talk, members sponsored the adoption and training of a dog at Southeastern Guide Dogs’ Palmetto facility. The dog — named Mazel, meaning “luck” in Hebrew — made an appearance at the temple’s June 6 Shabbat service. Born in 2013, Mazel is still in the training process and spent nearly a year with a host family in North Carolina that provided updates to Rabbi Jonathan Katz that he shared each month with congregants. Her final evaluation will determine her placement.

Town Attorney Maggie Mooney-Portale

The search for a new town attorney for Longboat Key is over before it started. Town Attorney Maggie Mooney-Portale, who resigned May 19, rescinded her resignation June 6. Her letter, titled “Withdrawal of Notice of Termination of Legal Services

Agreement,” states that “pursuant to your request at the Town Commission meeting on June 1, the vote of confidence received thereafter, and my subsequent discussions, please accept this letter as my formal withdrawal of the Notice of Termination of Legal Services Agree-

ment that I previously rendered.” Mayor Jim Brown, who was on vacation when Mooney-Portale resigned at the end of the May 19 regular workshop, pleaded with her to reconsider her decision at the end of the June 2 regular meeting at Town Hall.

“I’m disappointed and angry our town attorney felt she needed to resign,” Brown said at the meeting. “I really think she was reading the tea leaves wrong. I believe she has a lot of support and the majority is supportive.”

The Longboat Key Hilton Beachfront Resort is no longer a Hilton. The hotel is open, but the Hilton sign and flag have disappeared from the property. The pool and spa are also open, but the restaurant and bar have closed. It’s a strange start to the summer at the hotel site, where construction on a new renovation and expansion project was scheduled to begin no later than June 1. A white tarp placed over the Hilton sign now dubs the property at 4711 Gulf of Mexico Drive the Gulfside Beach Resort. The Hilton’s sign’s departure, though, shouldn’t be surprising to Longboaters. Ocean Properties Vice President Andy Berger told the Longboat Observer in January that to keep the Hilton flag flying on the property, renovations had to begin by June 1, and that hasn’t happened. There have also been discussions about the new hotel carrying a different flag or an independent name, such as the Gulfside Beach Resort, after the project is complete. Asked for an update on the hotel and the construction timeline, Berger and Longboat Key Club Director of Communications Sandra Rios declined to comment. Town officials and the company’s Sarasota-based attorney, though, aren’t concerned. Planning, Zoning and Building Director Alaina Ray confirmed the
